[cobirds] This Thursday - February 8 - Fort Collins Audubon hosts Arvind Panjabi talk on stopping the decline in bird populations

2024-02-06 Thread John Shenot
February's meeting of Fort Collins Audubon Society will feature a guest
lecture by Arvind Panjabi, Senior Research Scientist at Bird Conservancy of
the Rockies, on “Three Billion Birds Lost…and Counting: Can we stop the
decline and bring them back?” All of us who enjoy observing birds should
want to know what's causing the decline in numbers and how we can reverse
the trend!

The meeting will run from 7-9pm on Thursday Feb. 8, with Arvind's talk
starting at about 7:20pm. As always, we invite people to join us live and
in-person at the Fort Collins Senior Center (1200 Raintree Drive, FoCo) or
on Zoom at:
https://us02web.zoom.us/j/83890405859.

[cobirds] Updated Access Policy for Timnath Reservoir - Larimer County (no bird observations)

2024-01-08 Thread John Shenot
Fort Collins Audubon Society (FCAS) has worked to maintain access for
birders to Timnath Reservoir ever since the town adopted a restricted
access policy several years ago. The policy is a frequent source of
confusion for birders. After a recent conversation with town officials, I
thought it might interest some in the COBIRDS audience to update/reiterate
the town's current policy for public access. See below. Feel free to
contact me if you have questions.

John Shenot
FCAS President
Fort Collins, CO

Timnath Reservoir is one of the top birding destinations in all of
Colorado, with 270 different bird species observed there throughout the
years. However, *signs at the Timnath Town Park entrance and information on
the town website state that access is for permit holders only.* I have some
good news to share about that.

But first, some background. The Town of Timnath has a lease agreement with
the water company that owns Timnath Reservoir that allows for recreational
uses on the water and shoreline. The town adopted a policy limiting those
uses to permit holders. *Town residents can get an annual shore use permit
for free, but must pay to obtain a permit for boating. All others must pay
to obtain a permit for shore use or boating – with one important exception.*

*FCAS secured an informal agreement with the Town’s Parks and Recreation
Department that allows FCAS members in groups of 5 or fewer people to have
free access without a permit to the reservoir shoreline, including the park
on the southwest side of the reservoir, for wildlife viewing (including
birding) only.* Larger groups must notify and get prior permission from
town parks department staff. *If a town employee asks to see your permit,
tell them you are a member of FCAS and you will be allowed access for
birding*, but not for boating, fishing, dog walking, disc golf, or any
activity other than wildlife viewing. *You will not have to show proof that
you are an FCAS member.*

If for any reason a town employee insists you need a permit, please don’t
argue with them. Be respectful, leave the area as requested, and notify
FCAS so we can try to fix the problem. *Access by a non-town resident is a
privilege, not a right, and it is important that all of us follow the rules
and observe good birding ethics if we want this privilege to continue.*

[cobirds] Type 1 Evening Grosbeak - Red Fox Meadows (LARIMER)

2023-10-16 Thread John Shenot
Yesterday (Sunday morning 10/15), on my daily dog walk, I heard an Evening
Grosbeak making flight calls as it flew toward me. For once(!), I was quick
enough to get a good audio recording. After reviewing the spectrograph, I
concluded that it was Type 1, not the Type 4 that is expected for Colorado.
Nathan Pieplow kindly reviewed my recording and confirmed Type 1. My
checklist with the recording is here:
https://ebird.org/checklist/S152315350.

Nathan suggests we may be having an invasion of Type 1s, so here's another
reminder to audio record the birds you hear!

Happy Bird-day to you all,

[cobirds] RFI: Steller's Sea Eagle

2023-06-16 Thread John Shenot
I spoke this morning with a not-very-serious birder who saw a very large
bird in fall of 2020 at Dixon Reservoir (Larimer) that he struggled to ID.
He claimed to be familiar with Bald and Golden Eagles, including immatures,
and Ospreys. Saying he felt sure it was not one of those, he looked around
on the internet but the only thing he could find that looked right
was Steller's Sea Eagle - a species he learned had never been observed
anywhere remotely close to this part of the world. He convinced himself it
couldn't be that, it had to be something else like a "mutant bald eagle",
and let the mystery fade. Until he learned about the vagrant sea eagle seen
that year in Alaska (before his mystery bird sighting) and Texas (after his
sighting).

FWIW, his description of the bird he saw matched the field marks
for Steller's Sea Eagle. I don't know the guy but he didn't strike me as a
hoaxer, or someone seeking glory.

I'm only posting this to ask if anyone else ever heard anecdotal stories or
speculation about that famous sea eagle perhaps migrating across/over
Colorado? Obviously there are no documented sightings but I didn't know if
there were any rumors?

And finally, the fun part: this guy says he had pictures but his hard drive
died. He is trying to find a part so he can restore the hard drive. If he
succeeds with that, and shares a photo, I'll let this community know of
course. Until then, it's just an intriguing story.

[cobirds] Interested in First Edition of "The Birds of North America: Life Histories for the 21st Century"?

2023-03-27 Thread John Shenot
Fort Collins Audubon Society recently received a First Edition of *The
Birds of North America: Life Histories for the 21st Century* as a donation,
and we are considering whether to sell or auction it as a fundraiser. Step
1 is to get a sense of how much interest there might be, if any, among
Colorado birders. If anyone on this listserve might be interested, please
reply and let me know.

Background: From 1992-2003, the AOU published life histories for 718 North
American bird species. The life histories come in the form of glossy 8.5x11
booklets, typically 16 pages each, encased in 18 slip cases. SEE PHOTOS
BELOW. There were only 2400 copies of the first edition and we have a
certificate of authenticity for our copy. But... full disclosure... of the
718 accounts, 2 were unfortunately missing from what we were donated so I
will be obtaining reprints to make the set complete.

I realize nobody reads paper any more and some of the information is now
out of date, but this is more of a collector's item or a showcase for
someone with an in-home library. At one time, this was the definitive
reference on North American birds.

[cobirds] Hybrid(?) duck ID help - LARIMER

2021-11-24 Thread John Shenot
Not much traffic on COBIRDS this week so I'll share something that isn't
too exciting. Yesterday I saw an *Aythya *duck in Fort Collins, at the pond
where Drake and Ziegler roads meet, that didn't look quite right for
Ring-Necked or (in my opinion) Greater or Lesser Scaup. I know some of the
readers on this group enjoy identifying hybrids, so I welcome your
thoughts. As usual, my digiscoped iPhone photos are crap but maybe enough
for diagnosis?

https://ebird.org/checklist/S97972611

If it's a hybrid, I'd also welcome any information about how common or rare
this combination might be.

[cobirds] Bird song ID help request - from today (Larimer)

2021-11-20 Thread John Shenot
I recorded a song sparrow this morning singing in a way I'm not accustomed
to hearing. I'm not saying there is anything rare here but I'm curious if
SOSP subspecies vary in their songs, and if I might have heard a locally
uncommon subspecies. Or, more likely, it's just an ordinary local song
sparrow singing an ordinary song I've never paid attention to!

ebird checklist with very clear recording at:
https://ebird.org/checklist/S97827068

Be gentle on me, please... I hesitated to post this but my curiosity won
over my fear of being embarrassed. :)

[cobirds] Singing female Cassin's Finch?

2021-05-05 Thread John Shenot
Does anyone on this list have knowledge about or experience with singing
female Cassin's Finches? I recorded a Cassin's Finch singing at Grandview
Cemetery (Larimer) today, that appears to me to be female. Checklist with
photo and audio here: https://ebird.org/checklist/S87201022.

I'd love to know if anyone can share information about how normal or
unusual it is for a female CAFI to sing like this, OR tell me that this
female-type is not actually a female. I ask with humility: I don't pretend
to have any knowledge of this subject.

BTW: This could be, in fact probably is, the same individual bird reported
by Dave Leatherman on cobirds a couple of days ago.

Thanks,

dove, as a group, in a straight line at full speed. Fast! When they were
just 50 feet off the ground they banked hard and disappeared into a large
spruce. They sheltered there until the hail stopped.

[cobirds] Recording of Dave Leatherman's presentation to Fort Collins Audubon Society now available

2021-03-19 Thread John Shenot
Dave Leatherman delivered an excellent presentation to Fort Collins Audubon
Society on March 11, featuring his usual AMAZING stories and photographs!

If you missed the live event, you can view a recording at your leisure:

Cemetery, My Quality-Of-Life Saver During A Pandemic

(There are a couple of brief gaps in the presentation audio caused by a
momentary hiccup in my internet service during the live event. Our

[cobirds] Re: Fort Collins City Park on 3/15/21

2021-03-17 Thread John Shenot
Dave et al.,

I photographed a very dark Merlin a few miles from there (Prospect Ponds)
in January that I also thought might be Pacific race, but lacking your
experience and ID skills I was reluctant to report it as such. See photo on
eBird checklist: https://ebird.org/view/checklist/S79421827. Maybe it's the
same bird and it's been hanging around all winter? What's the normal range
for a wintering Merlin?

[cobirds] Re: Fort Collins Audubon Invites you to Virtual program on Crossbills presented by Dr. Craig Benkman

2020-11-13 Thread John Shenot
Several people have asked, so I will respond here. FCAS is not recording
our programs at this time. The Board of Directors considered this question
when we started using Zoom and decided against it. First, some of our
speakers prefer NOT to be recorded. But second, we are trying as best we
can to encourage people to attend our LIVE meetings and to make the
meetings interactive, just like our in-person meetings always were. I'm a
little concerned that if we record the presentations, fewer people will
attend and we'll lose that feeling of the chapter meeting being a social
event.

Sorry you missed it - Dr. Benkman's talk was FANTASTIC!

[cobirds] Pacific Loon and loon (sp.) - Douglas Reservoir (Larimer)

2020-10-25 Thread John Shenot
Yesterday at Douglas Reservoir I found a Pacific Loon which I was unable to
photograph, and then separately from that individual I also found two loons
that I was able to digiscope. I recorded them both as Common Loons and I
think that's right for the one on the left, but studying my photos this
morning I have lingering doubts about the one on the right. Hoping for a
confident ID and explanation from the experts at COBIRDS.

2020-08-29 Thread John Shenot
This morning I found a Myiarchus flycatcher at North Shields, in the NW
corner farthest from the parking lot, where the trail runs due east-west.
Dave Wade came over and relocated it and ID'ed it as a Great Crested.

It was later seen and photographed by many other birders. It was working
trees on both sides of the trail.

Great find, Tom!

Hooded Mergansers have been breeding at a gravel pit pond in Fort Collins since

chicks. I have no idea why they favor that site. As you note, it isn’t where
they are supposed to breed!

[cobirds] Re: Louisiana Waterthrush -- Larimer County

2020-04-23 Thread John Shenot
The Louisiana Waterthrush was very cooperative this morning and seen by
many birders. I'm only posting here to note that this is a first county
record for Larimer County, according to the updated checklist published by
Fort Collins Audubon Society in November 2017. Our checklist is based on
all available historical records we can find, not just eBird but also the
CFO's Colorado Bird Records Committee data. Andy Bankert even searched CSU
records back more than a century. So, perhaps this species has been seen
here before, but this is the first documented sighting in the county.

Congrats to Jessie and Matthew on this find, thanks for sharing it, and
please file a report with the Records Committee!

[cobirds] Stating the Obvious: All Fort Collins Audubon Field Trips are Canceled

2020-03-27 Thread John Shenot
Due to the pandemic and stay-at-home orders, Fort Collins Audubon Society
has canceled all field trips from now until at least the end of April,
including the one scheduled for tomorrow Saturday 3/28. We also canceled
the April Board and chapter membership meetings. Decisions about the May
chapter meeting and May field trips will be announced at a later date.

I'm sure this announcement is obvious but I wanted to dot every I and cross
every T.

FCAS encourages all our members and friends to enjoy spring, including

[cobirds] Stub-tailed wren - Poudre River Trail at Lee Martinez Park (LARIMER)

2020-02-28 Thread John Shenot
Today at around 1245pm I got brief looks at a Winter or Pacific Wren
adjacent to the bike trail at the northwest corner of Lee Martinez park,
where a little stream that drains a cattail marsh next to the trail passes
under the trail. This is the same location where a Mourning Warbler was
seen by many last spring. This bird was silent and I couldn't ID it to
species level. I had three brief glimpses in two minutes, and then it
disappeared for at least an hour. Lots of places for it to hide, but maybe
someone can relocate it and ID it!

[cobirds] YB Sapsucker and Northern Shrike - Grandview Cemetery (LARIMER)

2019-12-24 Thread John Shenot
This morning I observed one of the two(?) male Yellow-bellied Sapsuckers
reported by Dave Leatherman. It was in the trees over the building at the
Mountain Avenue entrance to the cemetery. I can't say which of the two
sapsuckers it was, but it was definitely a male.

I also saw a Northern Shrike on top of a spruce very near the center of the
cemetery. This is my first observation of this species at Grandview and the
first in eBird (but probably seen there by Leatherman before he was using
eBird?).

A group of Bushtits was present, but in smaller numbers than reported by
Dave. I didn't see or hear any crossbills.

This morning there were two, possibly three, Common Loons and one Pacific Loon

Tonight I saw Fawn’s photos (on her eBird checklist) and she got ID

[cobirds] Least Flycatcher singing at Lory State Park (LARIMER)

2019-06-14 Thread John Shenot
For the second year in a row I've observed a Least Flycatcher singing on
the Well Gulch Trail in Lory State Park in June. Same location as last
year; possibly or probably the same individual. Near interpretive sign post
#5, south of the trail. His singing was relentless this morning. He seems
to be a courageous or confused fellow, or both. I alternately admire and
feel sorry for him given the low odds of successfully finding a mate in
this location. I wish I had such pluck and determination.

[cobirds] ID help requested - Spatula hybrid - Cottonwood Hollow (Larimer)

2019-03-24 Thread John Shenot
This morning at 10:30 there was a hybrid duck in the big NW pond at
Cottonwood Hollow, the pond with the bench and interpretive sign
overlooking it. I added photos to my eBird checklist:
https://ebird.org/view/checklist/S54174768.

This is probably a common hybrid but I know next to nothing about hybrids.
It seems to me that we (birders) just assume that if a bird has familiar
traits of two species, it must be a hybrid of those two species. But this
individual has traits (I think) of Northern Shoveler, Cinnamon Teal, and
Blue-winged Teal. I'd be very appreciative if somebody could explain,
offline if necessary, why it is in fact an AxB and not an AxC or BxC. Or
perhaps it is unidentifiable. If I knew the answer I wouldn't be asking...

[cobirds] Grandview Cemetery male and female sapsuckers - update (Larimer)

2019-03-12 Thread John Shenot
This afternoon, I saw a MALE Yellow-bellied Sapsucker in the SE corner of
the cemetery. It had a completely red throat, completely bordered in black,
and no red on the nape. Another gentleman and I saw this bird in a leafless
tree across the ditch from the pine tree where I saw and photographed a
FEMALE YBSA last week. I was unable to get a photograph today.

Reviewing my photos and those included in eBird checklists filed by other
people throughout this current winter season, there is overwhelming
evidence indicating that two YB sapsuckers over-wintered in the cemetery
and are still present. Photos of each are sprinkled across eBird reports
throughout the winter months. Josh Bruening reported yesterday (in an eBird
checklist) that he saw the male YBSA chasing the female, also near the SE
corner.

[cobirds] Yellow-bellied Sapsucker continues at Grandview Cemetery (Larimer)

2019-03-08 Thread John Shenot
Reviewing photos in my eBird checklists after I got home, it dawned on me that
I saw a female YBSA today (white throat) and a male last month (red throat).
There have been *two* individuals over-wintering in the cemetery!

Now I’m curious if the male is always seen on the golf course pines and the
female always by the maintenance buildings?!

Also: I watched a Pine Sisken gathering big mouthfuls of nest material. I think
it was spiderweb. In a conifer (I forget which) near the extreme SW corner of
the cemetery.

A male Barrow's was seen by several birders around mid-day today from the

identifiable. This species has been reported at this site recently and is
probably a persisting individual. With thousands of ducks on the water, it

recently reported at this location. I reported 16 duck species in total -
worth a visit especially but not only for those with spotting scopes.

I spent all morning at Prospect Ponds NA in Fort Collins. No sign of the Rusty
Blackbird, Fox Sparrow, or Harris’s Sparrow seen just yesterday. As far as I
know, several other birders dipped on these too. I did relocate the Winter Wren
reported by Dave Leatherman and others. It was seen all too briefly hiding
under stumps and tree roots along the bank of the creek just where Dave
reported. This is the creek that flows south along the east side of the natural
area, then turns to the east and parallels the bike path. Cross the bike path
bridge, then take the social trail to the north of the bike path through the
grove of mature trees. I saw it on the opposite bank from the trail.

[cobirds] Rusty Blackbird - Prospect Ponds NA (Larimer)

2018-11-04 Thread John Shenot
This morning, I chased two birds reported by Lori Zabel at Prospect Ponds
Natural Area in Fort Collins (on Sharp Point Drive). I came across Lori
Pivonka and Sheila Webber and we searched unsuccessfully for the
Yellow-billed Cuckoo. However, we found and photographed a female Rusty
Blackbird in non-breeding plumage which had been tentatively ID'ed by Lori
Zabel yesterday. The blackbird was seen by other birders and still present

[cobirds] Re: DFO Field Trip to Timnath Reservoir

2018-09-07 Thread John Shenot
Gregg, DFO Field Trip Participants, and all interested readers,

I just wanted to remind everyone about unique access issues at Timnath
Reservoir. I've posted about this on COBIRDS in the past, but it bears
repeating.

The Town of Timnath decided a few years ago to restrict access to the
reservoir and the town park to town residents only. A permit is required
for access, and only town residents can get a permit. When the town made
this decision, I contacted officials in my role as President of Fort
Collins Audubon Society and explained how important Timnath Reservoir is to
birders. Town officials decided that they would make an exception and not
enforce the permit requirement for birders. They communicated this to the
volunteers and employees who work in the town park and sometimes ask to see
permits, as well as to Town police.

I want you to know that the sign at the park entrance still says permit
required, and the town *ordinance* still restricts access to town residents
only. All we have is verbal agreement and an email from town officials (who
may or may not still be in office!) saying the requirements will not be
*enforced*. They could reverse this policy at any time, so it is incredibly
important to the birding community that we are respectful, friendly,
polite, and nice to everyone we encounter near the reservoir. Be
ambassadors for birds and birding! If you are asked to show a permit or
show proof of town residence by any police officer, employee, or volunteer
working in the park, DON'T BE OFFENDED. Don't get snippy. Politely explain
that you are birding, and that it's your understanding that the town
exempts birders from the permit requirement. If anyone representing the
town doesn't know about the exemption and tells you to leave, don't argue
with them. Just leave - and again be polite and nice, no matter how
frustrating or annoying it might be. Fort Collins Audubon will follow up
with the town if this happens and try to rectify the situation.

Have a great outing,
John Shenot
President, Fort Collins Audubon Society

Re: [cobirds] Common Gallinule at Running Deer Natural Area

2018-07-04 Thread John Shenot
The gallinule reappeared later this morning as well, but that's not why I'm
writing. Here are some tips for chasers:
1) Bring sunscreen and a hat, and consider bug spray. There is no shade
whatsoever. There are mosquitoes and biting flies but they aren't bad at
all.
2) A step stool or short ladder will help if you really want to photograph
this bird. A couple of feet of elevation is the difference between
obstructed and unobstructed views. You'll have to carry it a few hundred
yards from the parking lot.
3) Be patient and have fun chatting with other birders!

I hope Robert Beauchamp or someone with a camera (i.e., not me) will be
submitting documentation to the Colorado Bird Records Committee.

Good luck,
John Shenot

Since several people have asked: North CR 15 crosses Boxelder Creek between CR

[cobirds] Harris’s Hawk (Larimer) update

2017-12-10 Thread John Shenot
I also tried and failed to find this bird from roughly 12:30-2:00. While I was
at Running Deer, Sue Riffe came by and told several hopeful birders she had
seen it fly north from Riverbend Ponds Natural Area. Everyone sped north,
apparently to no avail.

I went to Roselawn Cemetery myself, knowing there are panoramic views to the
north. Surprised to find Red Crossbills (this is flat, low elevation, urban
habitat), harrier, coopers, redtail, but no hints of Harris’s Hawk. Then I
chased a false alarm back at Running Deer. Then I came to my senses and went
home.

I don’t often let myself chase rarities. It sets me up to be disappointed when
I dip, instead of enjoying what I *do* see. This time I remembered to enjoy the
process and seeing birding friends.

Stating the obvious (?) for locals, the hawk seen by others was at the edge of
our CBC circle, and flew north into the circle. Count week starts Wednesday!

[cobirds] Black-bellied Plover (not Pacific Golden-Plover) - Larimer

2017-09-07 Thread John Shenot
My post yesterday about a Pacific Golden-Plover at Bartels Reservoir in
Larimer County was, predictably, posted in haste and in error. My thanks to
those of you who replied publicly and privately with ID tips on *Pluvialis*
plovers, with which I have very little experience. I thought I should
re-post here as a thank you, and since Black-bellied Plover is rare enough
to merit a COBIRDS post.

This served as a good reminder to me of some smart birding advice. 1)
Consider all the clues and not just plumage - some of you noted posture,
bill shape/size, and overall shape/size. 2) Look at multiple field
guides. I still feel that none of the 3 field guides I looked at really
captured the look of the bird I saw, but looking at 3 instead of just
Sibley's (which I had in the field) brought me around to BBPL even before
your replies starting trickling in. 3) The collective wisdom of the COBIRDS
community vastly exceeds what is captured in any field guide.

Credit goes to another birder, Lori Pivonka, for finding and correctly
identifying (on eBird) this Black-bellied Plover.

Thanks,

[cobirds] Pacific (?!) Golden-Plover - Larimer

2017-09-06 Thread John Shenot
I was chasing an eBird report of a Black-bellied Plover this evening that
turned up, instead, what I believe to be a Pacific Golden-Plover. It was at
the north end of "Bartels Reservoir", actually a farm pond on Giddings Rd
north of Douglas Road in Larimer County. Anyone inclined to chase should
know that this is private property, viewed from the road, but there are no
truly good places to pull off on this 50mph busy road.

The bird: larger than adjacent killdeer, black throat, breast and flanks,
some white mixed in on flanks, speckled tan/golden back and wings, dull tan
cap, white belly and undertail. Photographs to be added within an hour to
my eBird report.

It looks like this would be the first Larimer County record in eBird, so I
will not be offended or embarrassed if (when?) someone offers a different
ID for this bird! But for goodness sakes, whatever it is, if you chase it,
BE SAFE!

[cobirds] Dickcissel - Reservoir Ridge Natural Area (Larimer)

2017-08-16 Thread John Shenot
I found and photographed a very cooperative adult female Dickcissel at
Reservoir Ridge Natural Area this evening. She was in the first big field
near the Overland Trail parking lot, on the fence to the right (north) of
the trail. Maybe 150 yards from the parking lot?

This species was seen at this location by multiple observers this summer,
but I wanted to post here as this appears to be the first August or later
record in eBird for Larimer County. So I guess this is late. Still a chance
for any listers who have missed this species in 2017!

[cobirds] American Bittern continues at Reservoir Ridge NA (Larimer)

2017-06-17 Thread John Shenot
An American Bittern was calling Friday evening at Reservoir Ridge, after
7:30pm. Possibly earlier but it was windier earlier. I heard this same bird
(presumably) LAST Saturday, also in the evening. It had been previously
reported on eBird by other birders who may or may not follow COBIRDS.

Reservoir Ridge NA has multiple parking areas. This bird could be heard from
the east-west trail that starts at the Overland Trail parking lot. It was in
the reeds around the pond that is south of the trail about 0.5(?) miles from
the parking lot.

We don't get many bitterns in Larimer County. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE stay on the
trail. Don't approach the pond. Hearing the bird is good enough. Don't make me
regret posting here, which I do with some hesitation but with thanks for all of
you who share so much information here.

Also: bobolinks are present here in numbers, and some other lovely birds, but I
didn't find the Dickcissels reported yesterday morning.

[cobirds] Possible Gilded Flicker, Fort Collins

2017-03-20 Thread John Shenot
I observed what may have been the same individual bird at the Museum feeders
twice in December 2015 and once in January 2016. Each time I recorded the
observation in eBird as an intergrade Northern Flicker with red malar but
yellow shafts. I don't carry a camera when birding, so no images to share.

I am unclear whether this definitively supports or refutes Nick's theory of a
possible Gilded Flicker. The principal pieces of scientific evidence in support
of Gilded would be:

1) I've always maintained that if I ever had the good fortune to see a first
state record, I would surely mis-ID the bird; and
2) I once said to Nick with no evidence whatsoever (though he wouldn't remember
this) that I figured there had been Gilded Flickers seen in Colorado, just not
properly identified.

[cobirds] Re: Scissor-tailed Flycatcher - Larimer

2016-10-03 Thread John Shenot
FYI this local rarity was originally reported on the Fort Collins Audubon
Society facebook page by Daniel Stangeland, a birder visiting from Florida
who probably hasn't heard of COBIRDS. Thanks to Daniel and congrats to
David Wade, who hopefully won't be the last local to find this gem.

[cobirds] Re: Big Day by Bike -- May 14

2016-05-17 Thread John Shenot
Way to go, Chris!

Doug Swartz and I did a Big Day by bike on the 14th as part of the Fort
Collins Audubon Society Birdathon. We well understand the challenges you
faced (we also had to deal with a tire puncture) and the rewards.

Doug and I purposefully limited ourselves to the Poudre River corridor in
order to bring attention to local efforts to get it designated by National
Audubon as an Important Bird Area. Our purpose-driven itinerary gave us a
good hook for Birdathon fundraising but being in essentially the same
habitat all day long limited our species count to 84. We also spent a long
time watching a mixed flock of 500-1000 swallows because we decided that
was more fun that trying to maximize our species count. But that meant we
were there when a Peregrine Falcon came. Watching a Peregrine hunt swallows
was just breathtaking!!! Aerial acrobatics at their best.

I echo your recommendation that people give Big Day by Bike a try!

Another Global Big Day option: It's not too late to register a team for the
Fort Collins Audubon Society Birdathon. We want teams to bird on May 14,
but it's a fundraiser, so if May 14 won't work for you we're allowing teams
to count birds in any 24-hour period from May 13-22. Download forms from

[cobirds] Re: Participants Wanted - Fort Collins Audubon Society Birdathon Fundraiser

2016-05-06 Thread John Shenot
FCAS is still looking to add teams for our Birdathon event. We are flexible
about the dates and we don't require any minimum fundraising level or
donation. I hope some of you will sign up.

Now, the main reason for this update: I learned last night that some of the
links on the FCAS web page might not be working the way we expected. If you
already tried to register a Birdathon team, we might not have captured the
data. (Sorry!) So... if you want to register for the FCAS Birdathon, the
best option is to download the form on our website, fill it out, and email
a copy or a scanned copy to our Birdathon coordinator, Bill Miller, at
5mcorpATcomcast.net. You can also email Bill if you are looking for
Birdathon teammates, or want to make a pledge.

[cobirds] Lee Martinez Park, Fort Collins (Larimer) - no tanager but...

2016-05-04 Thread John Shenot
I spent about two hours this morning at Lee Martinez and failed to locate
the Scarlet Tanager reported Monday and Tuesday. I believe two or three
other birders also tried and -- as far as I know -- had no luck. Perhaps
this guy has moved on. I hope others will look and maybe find what I
missed.

On the bright side, I heard a Green Heron call several times from about
8:00 to maybe 8:15 from the swampy area north and just slightly west of the
parking lot, where the bike path forks. There was also a Loggerhead Shrike
perching at the top of the tallest trees along the little creek next to the
bike path, just north and slightly east of the parking lot. Nice
consolation birds on a lovely morning.

I observed this warbler from 8:28-8:32am today. My fifth attempt, and so
happy to have seen such a beautiful bird! It was present for about a half
hour before I saw it, observed by the homeowners and by Andy Bankert.

When the warbler left the feeder, it flew into the pine tree on the other
side of the east fence. I couldn't tell if it stayed there or moved
elsewhere, and I had to leave.

I want to add my thanks to Luke and his entire family for being not just
tolerant but welcoming and supportive of all the birders invading their
backyard. The birding community owes them a big thank you!

[cobirds] Gray-crowned Rosy Finches - Livermore Community Church (LARIMER)

2015-11-27 Thread John Shenot
Hoping that the snow had chased some winter finches down from the
mountains, I headed up to Livermore this morning. The roads were not great,
and it was considerably colder than in Fort Collins - close to zero. I was
rewarded with a flock of about 30 Gray-crowned Rosy-Finches sitting under
the feeders behind Pastor Ken's home when I got out of the car. I checked
to confirm that they were all Gray-crowned. Then they flew off before I
could get an exact count or photos, and did not return before my
extremities went numb and I went home. (A single one remained behind which
I digiscoped - look for my eBird report if interested.)

Nothing else out of the ordinary present. A couple of siskins and some tree
sparrows, and other common birds.

I spent an hour and a half looking for the warbler this morning without
success. Joe Mammoser was with me most of the time. I wouldn't discourage
others from trying: it was fairly birdy with chickadees, juncos, bushtits, and
an RC kinglet. It would have been easy to miss a lone warbler.

We flushed a bird from the ground that had the GISS of a shorebird. Smaller
than a killdeer and bigger than a peep. Joe and I were Baffled by that, given
that the property has no water. Woodcock? (Baseless speculation)

[cobirds] Phalaropes and Stilts at Duck Lake (LARIMER)

2015-08-27 Thread John Shenot
This morning there were phalaropes and black-necked stilts on Duck Lake, on
Carpenter Rd (Hwy 392) near Fossil Creek Reservoir. Most of the phalaropes
were definitely Wilson's but at least 2 Red-necked were also present. Since
I found none of these species at Fossil Creek Reservoir, maybe these are
the same birds other birders saw at Fossil Creek a couple of weeks ago?

Fossil Creek Res had high numbers of grebes, egrets, gulls, and ducks, but
I didn't find any unexpected species. The number of Franklin's Gulls was
impressive, as previously reported by other birders.

Thank you all for sharing sightings and happy birding!

[cobirds] Timnath Reservoir (LARIMER) - no sightings - update on access policy for non-residents

2015-06-29 Thread John Shenot
Sean Walters reported earlier this month that the Town of Timnath had
adopted a policy excluding non-residents from access to Timnath Reservoir
and the town park on the west side of the reservoir.

I've been in touch with town officials on behalf of concerned birders and
in my capacity as chapter president of the Fort Collins Audubon Society
(FCAS). Today I received an encouraging email from Brian Williamson in the
Community Development Department, saying he had discussed our concerns with
the Town Manager and they decided to allow members of the Audubon Society
to access the reservoir for the interim time while we work on a possible
update to the Policy.

FCAS has accepted an invitation to talk to the Town Council at their 7/28
meeting about the policy. It is not likely that any decisions will be made
at that meeting, but our remarks will inform any future policy updates.

We have no guarantee that the Town will permanently change its policy, but
I'm doing the best I can. For the time being, Audubon members have access.
Mr. Williamson said he would alert Shane, who greets people at the
reservoir, and the Police Department of this temporary update to the Policy.

Re: [cobirds] Timnath Reservoir Apparent closure, Larimer county

2015-06-14 Thread John Shenot
I have been in contact with Timnath town officials asking questions and raising
concerns about the new policy. I'm hoping that if the Colorado birding
community is RESPECTFUL of the town's rules and authority we will be able to
get this misguided policy changed to allow birders access.

PLEASE - no nasty messages to town officials and no confrontations with
employees who try to enforce it.

We need to demonstrate to Timnath that they have a property that is very
important and special to birders, and that birders could be an asset rather
than an unwanted intrusion. We may ultimately have to PAY for this privilege
just as town residents (I'm told) are paying for park passes.

Please contact me if you want to strategize on how to get a positive outcome.
(But note I will be out of town all week and slow to respond.)

[cobirds] Another(?) Chestnut-sided Warbler - Poudre River Trail/Nix Farm (LARIMER)

2015-05-25 Thread John Shenot
I found (or refound) a Chestnut-sided Warbler this morning near the Poudre
River Bike Trail at about 10:45am. The RBA says SIMONDS reported one
yesterday on the Poudre trail, without location details, but the trail is
very far from where WALTERS reported one last week. The one I saw today was
in the triangle between the bike trail and the river, north-northwest of
the Nix Farm buildings, very near the river, just down river and down hill
from the bluff and 'waterfall'.

I confess that I didn't note whether it was a male or female, which would
have helped (perhaps) with figuring out if there is more than one of these
around. Didn't really study how extensive the chestnut sides were. Oops.
For what it's worth, I remember the crown being very bright yellow and the
black stripes on the face being distinct, perhaps suggesting a male.

[cobirds] Red-headed Woodpecker - Poudre Trail/Butterfly Woods (LARIMER)

2015-05-22 Thread John Shenot
I tried and failed to refind the Great-crested Flycatcher reported by
Biggerstaff, and missed all the rare birds reported by Edwards and by Komar at
Lions Park. My consolation prize was a Red-headed Woodpecker, behind the brown
house near the bend in the Poudre Trail south of the river at Butterfly Woods.
Same property also had a Wild Turkey.
