[cobirds] Trespassing at Box Elder Creek

2020-06-11 Thread Karen Drozda
I drove out to Box Elder Creek today to catch an Orchard Oriole. I was
stopped by DIA patrol and was told this is was airport land and restricted.
PLEASE! Do not go out there to bird. The guy who stopped me said that it
will soon be patrolled by Homeland Security etc. due to it being
restricted. I assured him I would get the word out. Thanks. BTW no OROR :(

[cobirds] American Bittern

2020-04-21 Thread Karen Drozda
I can assure you, from the shade of red of my eyes, I could not find the
American Bittern as of 1330 today. I looked for 2 hours. The winds were
calm, so the cattails were still. The east side of the marsh is being
dredged, and they are doing road construction on MLK Blvd. If anyone gets
on it again, please post. I live a short distance from there. Thanks.

We were at the Lowry dog park this a.m. There is a large flock (at least
12) of Mountain Bluebirds feeding in the dog park and surrounding trees. I
plan to return this afternoon and take photos.
They are really beautiful against the snow.

[cobirds] Ani still in Sand Creek at 1130 a.m. Monday

2019-09-09 Thread Karen Drozda
To find the current location of the Ani, follow the gravel trail parallel
to the RK building (large white building with red stripe. Do not cross the
bridge. Follow the chain link fence about 100 yds to a lone cottonwood tree
next to the fence. Look into Sand Creek at another small lone cottonwood
amongst the willows. Follow the cottonwood trunk to the ground to a clump
of brown grass debris. We heard the bird calling about 0930. It was very
visible, preening and resting in this location. Will most likely remain
there during the heat of the day. Many observers this a.m. Best to get
there from Central Park Blvd and 35th, turn east on 35th to Xanthia.

[cobirds] Re: Ani still here

2019-09-09 Thread Karen Drozda
As of 1130 the Ani was still quite visible. Follow the gravel trail
parallel to the white building with red stripe "RK". Along the chain link
fence, there is a lone cottonwood tree about 100 yds down the trail.
Looking into Sand Creek, there is a small cottonwood in Sand Creek. Look
into the willows at the base of the cottonwood. The bird was calling
earlier and preening. It seems to be settled in that spot for the heat of
the day. Many observers this a.m.

The injured male goose was finally picked up by a wildlife officer last
night around 7 p.m. Just to let you know, if you find an injured bird any
time after 4 or 5 p.m. you will most likely strike out finding any help. I
called Greenwood Wildlife (closes at 4 p.m.) and Wild Bird (closes at 5
p.m. I was instructed to call the Colorado Highway Patrol dispatch and they
contacted a wildlife agent. You can also call 311 and the will notify an
officer. Also was told to take it to Alameda East Vet clinic to be
euthanized. " Hop in the truck, injured male goose"!

[cobirds] Red-headed Woodpecker and Ovenbirds

2019-06-09 Thread Karen Drozda
DFO field trip to ELdorado State Park. 50 species. Many singing Ovenbirds at
junction of Fowler trail and turning onto Goshawk trail. Denise Reznicek
spotted a pair of Red-headed Woodpeckers in burn area at top of ridge as it
descends Fowler trail. Lewis's Woodpecker have not been seen there in the past
2 years in this same area. I did shoot video and have taken some still frames.
Fantastic birds, wildflowers now.

hours. Will be curious to see if the American Crow nest with a begging juve

After a thorough search of the area east of Carolyn Armstrong Fishing

the hillside to the east all the way to Smoky Hill Parking lot.
I searched from about 1030 to 1230. There was a breeze from the north and
it was 50 degrees. It was fairly "buggy", but no flycatcher in sight. I
did, however, come upon a lone Sage Thrasher.
