[cobirds] Cattle Egret, Lower Bluestem Trail, Boulder
Hi folks! Was quite surprised to find a cattle egret on a hike against the flatirons today on the Lower Bluestem trail in south Boulder. It was hanging out with a herd of cattle at a water tank about a mile up the trail. The cows weren’t sure what to make of it and didn’t seem too happy about it. They kept chasing it — it would fly up briefly and land not too far away. A quick look at EBird suggests the last November cattle egret sighting was in 2012. Hi Eric! (sharing with cobirds for others who may have the same question, I know I did when I headed down there) You’ll want to park at the East Boat Ramp in Cherry Creek State Park. There is a smaller upper lot with a vault toilet that is convenient. From there, walk down to the shoreline and follow it to the inlet. Bird seems to favor the grasses on the opposite side of the inlet, so bring your water shoes. It’s fairly shallow but a bit mucky. Hope that helps! [cobirds] COLORADO RARE BIRD REPORT FOR FRIDAY MAY 1, posted May 1 at 6am
Date: Friday, May 1 2020 Email: RBA AT cobirds.org Compiler: Laura Steadman lauramsteadman @ gmail com _ The Colorado Rare Bird Report is an informational service. Because of statewide coronavirus “Stay at Home” and “Safer at Home” orders (depending on where you live), the purpose of this report is to keep homebound readers abreast of rare bird sightings across the state during spring migration. It does NOT endorse or encourage illegal travel to see or "chase" rare birds beyond your own permitted area. We urge readers to respect state and local restrictions on non-critical travel and limits on outdoor activities that include birding. Please bird ONLY at or close to home and ONLY with universally promoted safety precautions, including “social distancing” and face coverings. [cobirds] COLORADO RARE BIRD REPORT FOR THURSDAY, APRIL 30, posted 6 AM Thurs.
Date: Thursday, April 30 2020 Email: RBA AT cobirds.org Compiler: Laura Steadman lauramsteadman @ gmail com _ The Colorado Rare Bird Report is an informational service. [cobirds] Yellow-headed blackbird, Stearn's Lake, Boulder County
On this morning's DFO trip to Stearn's Lake, we saw a male yellow-headed blackbird with a large group of red-winged blackbirds. The flock was initially in the trees by the house/pond across the road from Stearn's Lake, and eventually flew to the southeast. It was a nice surprise for January! Also of note were two ferruginous hawks, a snow goose, and what I think was a snow x cackling goose. [cobirds] Sabine’s gulls, Valmont, Boulder County
Just counted at least 8 Sabine’s gulls from Legion Park (Valmont Overlook) in Boulder. They were pretty much on the opposite side of the water, so a scope was really useful. We checked Baseline Reservoir in Boulder, which is also usually a good spot for Sabine’s when they come through in the fall. A beach and waterskiing party had the birds being quiet there. After an intense lightning storm and a bit of hail last night, there were lots of new visitors at Crow Valley Campground near Briggsdale. [cobirds] Pacific/Winter Wren, Dry Creek Open Space, Boulder County
Hi folks, This afternoon at Dry Creek Open Space in Boulder County, I saw a winter or pacific wren. It was hopping about on the edge of the creek. Short, stubby tail, fine barring or speckling, quite a bit of rufous, concentrated near the tail. At first I reported it in eBird as a winter wren, but after looking at comparisons online, I'm not sure I paid enough attention to the right things to make a confident call. Either way, it's a first for me! [cobirds] Red rocks, Jeffco Spring arrivals
Lots of blue-grey gnatcatchers and Virginias warblers at red rocks this morning. We also had nice looks at a lazuli and a blue bunting, bullocks Orioles, and black headed grosbeaks. [cobirds] Worm-eating Warbler continues, CU Campus, Boulder
The previously reported worm eating warbler was still hanging out just now at about 4:00. It's maybe 50 yards east of where it was initially reported, on the south side of a split in the trail. Seems to be hanging out with two chickadees and two hermit thrushes. It's actively foraging on or near the ground. [cobirds] Sombrero Marsh, Boulder
A trip to Sombrero Marsh in Boulder this morning yielded a marsh wren, blue winged teal, and a brief glimpse of a swallow (white belly, my hunch is tree swallow but not positive on the ID). [cobirds] Great-tailed Grackle, Lower Church Lake, Jeffco
While scoping out the ducks and gulls at Lower Church Lake today, saw a great-tailed grackle on the east side in the marsh grass. Good assortment of ducks, too! If you haven't checked out Lower Church Lake, I highly recommend it. It was dry for a year or two, but is now filling back in with water and always has something on it. It's on Old Wadsworth in almost-Broomfield. Laura Steadman Boulder, CO -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Colorado Birds" group. [cobirds] Sandhill Cranes, Boulder at 12, then Broomfield at 1230
Saw about 100 cranes flying south-southeast over the Boulder Humane Society (~Arapahoe & 55th) at about noon today. Arriving home near the 1st bank center in Broomfield just now, watched a flock of about 100 catching a thermal overhead! Maybe the same group. Continued heading south. So cool! [cobirds] Caspian Tern - St. Vrain State Park, Weld
Watched a caspian tern diving for fish in the Pelican Pond of St Vrain State Park for about 10 minutes today, at about 12:30. It then made its way west and out of sight. No luck on finding the little blue heron at the Firestone gravel pits, but the heat waves coming off the water were pretty thick, making it difficult to pick through the egrets on the spit with the cormorants. [cobirds] Orange-crowned Warbler. Walden/Sawhill Ponds, Boulder Co
Early this morning at Walden and Sawhill Ponds, in addition to 42 other species, I had great looks at an *orange-crowned warbler* feeding in a flowering bush (I don't know what they're called, but they have white buds all over them and smell nice). That was a FOS for me! Also present were both *myrtle* and* Audubon's yellow-rumped warblers*. *House wrens* seem to be back in force again this year! A lone *spotted sandpiper* was peeping and bopping around in Cottonwood marsh, near the boardwalk area. Good Birding! [cobirds] Boulder: still present - Black and Eastern Phoebes, Boulder Co.
As of 730 this morning both the black and eastern phoebes are fly catching on the west side of the 75th bridge. Way cool! Laura Steadman Broomfield On Saturday, May 31, 2014, g...@ucar.edu wrote: All, I stopped at the 75th Street bridge over Boulder Creek at 9:15 this morning. The first bird I saw on the west side of the bridge was a Black Phoebe, and the second was an Eastern Phoebe, both searching for insects just above the creek. Subsequently, I went to the Hwy 287 bridge and the 109th Street pond and did not see a Black Phoebe there. So, perhaps it is the same bird seen previously in the latter area that has moved a couple of miles upstream. [cobirds] Sombrero Marsh, Walden Ponds This Morning -- Boulder Co.
This morning at Sombrero Marsh, in addition to the usual suspects (coots, red-winged blackbirds, yellow-headed blackbirds, gadwalls, barn swallows, etc) were 4 Wilson's phalaropes, a flock of about 10 chipping sparrows, and close to 30 violet-green swallows. Also present was a group of 10 yellow-rumped warblers of both varieties. At Cottonwood Marsh, 7 pelicans huddled on an island while 9 Wilson's phalaropes skittered about. I didn't see much else of note in the pond. An eastern kingbird (in the company of a western kingbird, for great comparison) was hanging out by the parking lot. I didn't explore beyond Cottonwood. [cobirds] Boulder -- Summer Tanager, Nashville Warbler,et al and TOWNSEND'S WARBLER
This morning between 7 and 8:45 we were able to re-find the SUMMER TANAGER, ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAK, and NASHVILLE WARBLER in the same location as previously described along the bike path. Numerous YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLERS, both Audubon's and Myrtle's, made quite the show. We dipped on the Plumbeous Vireo, but did get great looks at TOWNSEND'S WARBLER. It and the Nashville seemed to be enjoying the brush S of the bike path, near the track field. What a treat!
