Fwd: [cobirds] My best yard bird...Painted Redstart
Dear CObirders: I had no idea that I would get a response in regards to my Painted Redstart picture such as that I received from Cole Sage. I have copied it for everyone to read. I recommend that Mr. Sage be blocked from CObirds. Paula Hansley Louisville -- Forwarded message - From: Cole Sage Date: Tue, Mar 12, 2024 at 11:31 PM Subject: Re: [cobirds] My best yard bird...Painted Redstart To: Paula Hansley This is not a Painted Redstart it is an American Redstart. When identifying birds it is often good to use a field guide and not jump to the rarest possible bird. Re: [cobirds] My best yard bird...Painted Redstart
Megan and others, My Painted Redstart: 1. My redstart is RED on its upper breast not orange as on the Am.Redstart 2. My redstart has a white wing patch vs. none on the Am.Redstart I could go on, but it would be easier if birders would look at their bird books, for instance: See page 382 in “The Warbler Guide” by Tom Stephenson and Scott White for a comparison of these two redstart species. Please, when questioning an identification please do not be rude or snarky as some people have been! [cobirds] Yard list (birds)
CObirders, I urge all of you who feed the birds and(or) keep a yard list to join Projecf Feederwatch sponsored by Cornell University. Counting of birds in your yard for Project Feederwatch follows a strict protocol to ensure as much as possible that birds aren’t counted twice. Data from these counts are used by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and other agencies to set policy— I.e. which species should be a “species of special concern” or should be on the Endangered Species list. You can also see various types of graphs of any species you choose, such as graphs showing abundance through time. Graphs of Common Bushtits and Eurasian collared-Doves are very interesting. [cobirds] Say’s Phoebe and Tree Swallows, Boulder County
CObirders, I was with a group of ~12 birders this morning that hiked the White Rocks trail (trailhead is on Valmont Road between 75th and 95th Streets in Boulder County) north to the base of the White Rocks. We were very surprised to have 4 early Tree Swallows fly over the group! We wondered what they might be eating— later, we saw small “clouds” of gnats(?), the first I’ve noticed this year. A Say’s Phoebe was sitting on a mullein where we turned around just before the trail heads uphill! It felt and sounded like spring! [cobirds] Townsend’s Solitaire, Boulder County
Birders: I pulled off of 75th Street between South Boulder Road and Baseline Road into Fairview Estates to make a cell phone call and while I was on hold, a Townsend’s Solitaire landed on the mirror on the right side of my Subaru! I looked at it looking at me and couldn’t take a picture because I was on the phone. (I went back to take px of it and to see if the bird would fly to my car again, but a man (a homeowner whose driveway I turned around in) blocked my way with his car and yelled at me. It was frightening. ) I had pulled onto the side of Wewota Way in front of his house to make my phone call. I’ve never had a bird land on one of my side mirrors, plus I haven’t seen any solitaires east of the foothills this winter. [cobirds] Prairie Merlin(?), Jefferson County
CObirders, I saw a possible adult female or juvenile Prairie Merlin sitting in a small tree located in a field at ~ 3 PM today while driving north on Wadsworth Blvd. The bird was east of Wadsworth, north of Church Ranch Blvd., south of Hwy. 128, and southeast of Rocky Mountain Airport. It was close enough to the highway that I could tell it wasn’t a kestrel, plus it was sitting up straight, not bent over like a kestrel; however, it was about the same size as a kestrel. [cobirds] Red-tailed Hawk hunting at my feeders
Birders, A Red-tailed Hawk is picking off birds at my feeders! Normally, a Cooper’s Hawk that lives in my neighborhood is responsible for bird deaths at my feeders. The hawk sits on my house or high in a neighbor’s cottonwood tree and watches the feeders in both my front and back yards. The Cooper’s will sit quietly in the tree where the feeders are hanging and wait for its prey. As a result, I have very few birds. [cobirds] Short-eared Owls(?) and Ferruginous Hawks
CObirders— While returning from a funeral in SE Kansas, just before dark yesterday I saw at least four large owls (probable Short-eared) and several Ferruginous Hawks flying lo over the winter wheat fields and prairiewhile driving across northwestern Kansas and northeastern Colorado on highway 36. In this area of prairie, there were many expanses with no trees or telephone poles in sight. My route took me from Atwood, Kansas to Strasburg, Colorado (avoiding I70 and all the traffic). It was amazing (and somewhat scary) because the road was two-lane was so deserted. I saw almost no other vehicles. I highly recommend highway 36 as an alternative route to I70 in this area if you have an extra hour— speed limit is a little lower and you must slow down going through the small towns. Bird City, KS, did have more birds (mostly mourning doves) than the other small towns. One town has a small population of Great-tailed Grackles. The Republican River had water and its associated State Wildlife Area is on the route and is worth exploring, although perhaps not during hunting season. Re: [cobirds] Cranes and nutcrackers
It was wonderful hearing the Sandhill Cranes in the low clouds and then finally seeing a flock of about 110 circling over south Boulder from a hill in Louisville yesterday! Clark’s Nutcrackers are back in Golden Gate Canyon State Park northwest of Golden after a near absence of several years. When I lived next to the park for 25 years, we regularly saw nutcrackers. When there recently, I heard and saw at least two families(?) of them. Clark’s nutcrackers are difficult to ignore if they are present because of their raucous calls. They are probably back because of the excellent lodgepole pine cone crop in the park— nutcrackers eat pine seeds, favoring the whitebark pine, which is found in high-altitude forests of the northwest. In the valley below the visitor’s center where Ralston Creek flows, I also saw numerous small flocks of both chickadee and nuthatch species, and heard Townsend’s solitaires singing. Stopping at various trailheads, I noticed an excellent berry crop on native bushes. [cobirds] Swainson’s Hawk & Turkey Vultures
CObirders: Would a Swainson’s Hawk migrate with Turkey Vultures? Just saw a group (kettle?) of vultures slowly migrating south over Louisville. Seemingly soaring with the vultures was one Swainson’s Hawk (missing a tail feather). Could this be a young bird that fledged late and then missed the main Swainson’s migration? Someone reminded me that I said I wasn’t going to post on CObirds any more. Obviously , I need to amend that statement. If I see or hear an unusual bird at my house, and if I’m going to be home, I will post the sighting. I may have seen the Black and White Warbler if I had realized what it was immediately. I was looking in the leaves not on the bark of my maple tree. It likes to glean insects from under the bark, like a nuthatch. The trunk of the maple is four feet from my water fountain. To me, this is a much different situation than an Open Space area that is not monitored by rangers 24 x 7. Paula -- Paula Hansley Petrographic Consultants International, Inc. CObirders, I drove over to the intersection of South Boulder and Cherryvale Roads and was thrilled to see and hear at least a dozen Bobolinks!! I think there are probably more, because I could hear some singing in the grass from a small pull-off along Cherryvale Rd. What an amazing sight— seeing several male Bobolinks displaying at once. I had forgotten how high a male will fly up into the air and then flutter down towards the ground while singing! The Bobolinks were in the field SE of the intersection of these roads, at least 100 m south of South Boulder Road. [cobirds] Apple Valley bonanza!!
CObirders, I took one of my favorite May drives on the Apple Valley Rd., which is just west of Lyons and is accessed from hwy. 36. The road roughly parallels the St. Vrain River. Many shrubs and trees are blooming on hillsides to the south of the road. It was this blooming vegetation that was full of birds just west of the cliffs where the White-throated Swifts nest — I saw primarily Black-headed Grosbeaks (a couple dozen), W. Tanagers (at least 16), and many Yellow Warblers — the tanagers were fly-catching and the other birds were gleaning bugs (some were little caterpillars) from the leaves in this one area!! It was amazing. There were lots of other birds there— nothing unusual, and I’ll report them in an ebird list later. I needed Dave Leatherman to identify the bugs! I heard one Am. Redstart and one Yellow-rumped Warbler. Both were singing closer to the creek in the taller trees. They seemed to be hanging out together. I also heard one possible Rose-breasted Grosbeak - it was easy to pick out it’s dong among all the singing Black-headed Grosbeaks. I was in on the road between 1 and 2 pm. I suspect the birds will be there as long as it remains cloudy/smoky. (This area is in NW Boulder County) Paula Hansley Louisville -- Paula Hansley Petrographic Consultants International, Inc. [cobirds] Evening Grosbeak; Denver Post editorial
A lone female Evening Grosbeak just visited my birdbath. This is the first grosbeak I’ve seen in months. Coincidentally, I had just read a very timely editorial on the Denver Post’s Sunday OP-ED page entitled “Migrating animals, especially birds, need our help”. I strongly encourage everyone to read this sobering article by Pepper Trail. According to some estimates, Evening Grosbeaks have declined by 90%, and 1/3 of migratory birds have been lost since the 1970s. The same declines are true for many animals and insects, as well. Re: [cobirds] Re: Do Dark-eyed Juncos Breed in Metro Denver?
It was a cold, snowy late May (1-2 feet of snow on May 30 in the foothills above 8500' in the foothills S and SW of Boulder). Golden Gate Canyon State Park had 18" in one storm and 6" the next day. I suspect this also has something to do with the breeding juncos in Denver. CObirders, I was delighted to hear one of my favorite birds at 7:00 am today: a Swainson's Thrush, which sang several songs from deep in the woods back by Boulder Creek. [cobirds] Blue-winged Warbler, Cottonwood Marsh, Walden Ponds, Boulder County
CObirders, At dawn this morning, I heard the familiar "Zee-zee" (going down in pitch) as I was leaving the Walden parking lot with the bass fishermen! This is one warbler song I will never forget, having grown up in southern Ohio. There was a small flock (<12) of "eastern" warblers that flew by me in the darkness before dawn. It was cloudy and fairly warm; clouds of insects could be seen over the water. Many birds (i.e. Yellowthroat, Bullock's Oriole, Yellow Warbler, Warbling Vireo) seem finally to have returned. [cobirds] Blue Jay mimics Cooper’s call, Boulder County
CObirders, I throw out peanuts at sunrise for my Blue Jays. The jays have gotten to expect this treat, so they have started arriving before sunrise. They make so much noise that they wake up the neighbors unless I throw out peanuts! One jay has figured out how to have the peanuts to himself: he arrives first and sits in my maple tree calling like a Cooper’s Hawk! At first, I thought it was a hawk, but I could never find it. Re: [cobirds] Re: History - Old bird checklists
My Apple computer was hacked last year. I lost everything on it and also my online backup with Carbonite. The hackers were interested in obtaining my mineral data. (I’m a consulting geologist) I hired one of the best computer experts in the Denver metro area at $300/ hour to try to retrieve some of my data. I laugh now when I’m asked to use a more secure password. If someone wants to steal any data we have online, they can. The best password in the world won’t make any difference. I will NEVER keep important records only on a computer and a digital back- up again. I keep hard copies of anything important. Put the checklists on eBird, but keep the paper copies. [cobirds] Indian Peaks breeding bird count
Looking For a Few Good Birders" The Indian Peaks Bird Counts began in 1982 as a Christmas Bird Count, complete with a count circle divided into areas that birders adopt. We expanded to all four seasons for 30 years, and now continue as a Summer (Breeding) Count. This year will be the 40th year. We are trying to recruit some "young-legs" to help with the bird count. Higher elevation areas, mostly hikes into the Indian Peaks Wilderness, such as Niwot Ridge, King Lake, Woodland Lake, Arapaho Pass, and Mt. Audubon. All of these are strenuous hikes, but beautiful country and a nice way to spend the day. They present a good array of birds typical of Front Range upper montane, subalpine, and alpine habitats. The count is run like a Christmas Bird Count, so it is fairly non-structured - just hike the trails and record what you see and/or hear. The Summer Count runs from June 1 through July 15 - you go out one day within the period. The count areas listed above are best done in late June or July, particularly this year with the abundant snowpack. If you would be interested in taking on one of the areas, whether by yourself or forming a team, please contact me directly. I can get you more detailed information.
