[cobirds] El Paso county Mountain Plovers (pics)

2020-08-03 Thread kickback
Finally got to see the mountain plovers that have been reported by
others (my third attempt!). I saw them on the north side of Myers road
about 2,000 feet to the west of the Myers /Peyton highway intersection.
There is a metal pole with a yellow piece of metal next to the fence at
almost the exact spot where you need to look north to see the birds. They
are about 100 yards from the road, I was very lucky to see them but
pictures were very difficult. I saw five birds, I have heard that there is
a large flock of them that has been seen.

These are my better pictures, I am curious about the one bird that does
not have dark lores as to whether it is a mountain plover or not.

Comments are welcome!

I agree that 5 years is a ways off but it is better to be proactive vs
reactive and we currently have a governor and legislature that would look
at our concerns from a fairly positive perspective. I think our goal should
be maintaining long term public access to the various birding "hot spots"

[cobirds] Potential loss of Chico Ranch for birding (Pueblo and El Paso counties)

*CHICO BASIN RANCH CONCERNS*

* For the past 20 years, Colorado Springs birders—in fact, birders across
the state—have been accustomed to wide access to the migratory stopover
known as Chico Basin Ranch. That may be about to change. Ranchlands (Duke
Phillips and family) holds the lease for Chico from the State Land Board
(SLB), which owns the property. The 25-year lease expires in 2024. In their
August meeting notes, the SLB devoted 33 pages to re-evaluating the Chico
lease and increasing revenue. While the proposed options include selling
the entire property for $33 million or continuing to lease to one entity,
it would be more profitable for them to split up the ranch. The preferred
option seems to be dividing the property into three separate ranches, and
potentially selling one off. Public access would likely be denied. Almost
half (44%) of Chico is designated into the Stewardship Trust. “The
designation is focused on large areas of intact, high quality Central
Shortgrass Prairie that include globally significant natural plant
communities and imperiled species” (SLB August 2019 Board Meeting
Information). Dividing the ranch would obviously fragment wildlife habitat
due to increased fencing, new ranch buildings, and differing management
styles. This is the largest tract of undeveloped land owned by SLB, and the
lack of fragmentation only increases its conservation value as a wildlife
and migratory corridor. It’s possible that SLB would put a conservation
easement on any property it sold, but that would be a long shot. The State
Land Board will be meeting in El Paso County on September 11 and 12.*

[cobirds] El Paso county Colorado Springs Western screech owl

2018-12-04 Thread kickback
There is a Western screech owl in the Bear Creek dog park in Colorado
Springs that is very viewable. It is located at the western end of the
creek (north side of creek) just before the chain link fence crosses the
creek. There is a lot of foot traffic from dog walkers going under the tree
it is in and lots of folks getting close and taking cellphone pictures, the
owl does not seem to care. It has been there since at least Thanksgiving
according to some of the dog walkers I talked to.

Lucy Luck reported and posted pictures of this owl that she thought was a
snowy owl on ebird on Dec 2. Her map coordinates did not come out quite
right but a woman walking her dogs who had seen the owl took the time to
show me exactly where it was.

Very hard to get good pictures due to lots of tall brush in this area.

[cobirds] El Paso County Clear Springs Ranch No screech owl today

2018-02-08 Thread kickback
Several other birders and I checked the location next to the creek at Clear
Springs Ranch where the screech owl had been reported over a span of a few
hours this morning. We found the cavity in the cottonwood but no owl as of
about 12:30 pm.

I am curious as to what time of day the other folks who saw it have seen it.

Thanks

The duck pictures are not great, it was very far out (300 yards(?) from

and I think it is a juvenile Sharp shinned hawk. It was calling a lot
because it was quite unhappy about a great horned owl in its tree!

[cobirds] El Paso county Wilson's snipe (picture)

2013-08-18 Thread kickback

I saw this Wilson's(?) snipe in the drainage ditch next to the culvert
under Stapleton Rd at the sw corner of Stapleton and Lambert in Falcon. He
was very a very cooperative poser which does not seem typical for snipes,
might be a juvenile based on bill length.

http://avoapples.com/birds/IMG_1965_cr.jpg

Also saw lots of hawks (Swainson's, Red tailed, and Rough legged) and a
prairie falcon along Eastonville rd and Latigo bld.

I believe I saw this morning and try to get a photo of the TRICOLORED HERON
using my 400 mm telephoto lens instead of my 70-300. I ran into a local
birder and his son who is also an avid birder. They had seen the heron and
ran into a birding couple who also saw it before it flew across the
wetlands. In our discussion they asked if there were 2 TRICOLORED HERONS
as they thought they had seen 2-- to which I blithely responded no and
something to the effect this is too rare a species here to have more than
one. After they left I spotted the TRICOLORED HERON fly into the distant
edge of the reeds and disappear down into them. Then I spotted the 3
Black-crowned Night-Herons and walked towards where they flew to try to get
a better look to get the age of all three when I saw the silhouette (now
after 8 pm and getting dark) of a water bird that had a very large bill.
It was a TRICOLORED HERON and it was quite a distance from where I had
watched a TRICOLORED HERON fly to. I had been watching this area and had
not seen this heron fly in from the other location. So did I miss the one
TRICOLORED HERON fly over or could there two of these rarities??

By the way I saw the Green Heron again tonight--it was perched on a
distant long log with a Great Blue Heron on one end and a Black-crowned
Heron (originally thought this was the TRICOLORED) on the other end with
the Green Heron in between. Nice birds today.

[cobirds] Re: More re: TRICOLORED HERON plus Green Heron and more at Holcim Wetlands east of Florence

Very cool

On Friday, June 14, 2013 4:03:35 PM UTC-6, SeEtta wrote:

This morning I drove over to Holcim Wetlands east of Florence after
birding on private property in the area so didn't arrive until
 mid-morning. I first found a Green Heron then 3 Black-crowned
Night-Herons. At least one of the Black-crowned Night-Herons was an adult
and one a juvenile. Given that juveniles have been found at this location
for several years I think it is likely they are nesting either in Holcim
Wetlands or at least in the area.

As I was watching the Night-Herons I spotted a bird flying into the reeds
and though I only had a glimpse I believe it was likely a LEAST BITTERN.

The TRICOLORED HERON was in the shallow water on the far west side of the
pond. For those unfamiliar with Holcim Wetlands, it is owned by Holcim
Cement and was built as the alternative to a fine for a toxic air release.
It is open to the public during daylight hours and has a dirt trail into
the wetland area and around the pond. The trail sections to reach the area
where I saw the TRICOLORED HERON is not in bad shape though not well
groomed (some other sections are rougher). It is mostly level but does go
down a slight slope under the railroad tracks and up again. It is almost a
half mile walk to get to the west side of the pond and there is minimal
shade so plan accordingly. Also be aware some cell service (like my
 Verizon) does not work there.

Holcim Wetlands can be accessed by taking H115 from Colorado Springs
through Penrose and to the turn going into Florence where CR120 comes in.
Take CR120 easterly and it will wind around down a steep hill with a sign
for Holcim Wetlands on the north side of the road. Be aware that they are
still constructing a new bridge further east so anyone coming from the
Pueblo area will need to go to take H115 off of H50.

I got photos of the bird and have uploaded them to my Birds and Nature
blog http://birdsandnature.blogspot.com/. I also schlepped back to my
car (by then midday and hot) for my camcorder and got some video of the
heron actively feeding and will get that up on my blog later tonight.

2012-11-15 Thread kickback

After much staring at pictures and various guides people have pointed me to
I think this is actually a Tundra swan for these reasons:

1, Sharp prominent curves in bill around gape
2. In all of my pictures there is evidence of the yellow teardrop marking
on the lore. It looks like a reflection at first but it is in the same
location at different angles and has some degree of yellow in it.
3. The area of the bill where it joins the eye is relatively narrow
4. The shape of the back is not as evenly rounded as the tundra

Thanks for all of the comments.

and to SeEtta for showing me the Eastern phoebe location.

I have received several replies, some people think this bird is a blackpoll
and others think it is a blackburnian.

[cobirds] Golden eagle (pictures) and sparrow question

2012-09-16 Thread kickback
I saw this Golden eagle on the power poles on Drennan road to the east of

And now for the question, what kind of sparrow is this? Seen in the very
dry prairie arounfd Big Johnson reservoir. I am leaning towards
Clay-colored but I'm not sure.

Ron,

sounds like a rock wren to me. Send me your email address and I'll send you
good pictures of both birds.

got a good look...but apparently not good enough for an id

I think it was either a rock wren or sage thrasher.
Plumage looked worn dirty white with faint buff streaks on throat,
otherwise grey on wings back, no yellow or brown.
I thought I detected some white above the eye.
Bill was fairly thin and a bit long.
 Build was quite slender
It stopped on the wall, tilt head up like a meadowlark, and let out a
brief call of perhaps just a couple notes.
I did not notice any tail wagging like I would expect with a wren.

Given location, habitat and behavior what is more likely?
One would be a lifer, the other not.
 What do you think?

I saw this bird on the east side of Brush Hollow Reservoir near Florence
