[cobirds] Joe Roller Memorial Green Big Year update!

2021-12-28 Thread Scott Somershoe
All,
It's been a busy few weeks, but I've finally gotten some blog posts up
about the most recent adventures and the unexpected December birds. With
three days left in the year and iffy forecasts, I'm guessing I won't be
finding any more birds, which may be a relief to some of you!

*It's never too late to make a per species pledge or a tax-deductible flat
donation to the Joe Roller Memorial Grant. We've eclipsed $37,000 with
donations and pledges to date! This far exceeds my modest expectations for
this endeavor. If we can raise $40,000, we will likely be able to invest
the funds and support a research grant annually just off of the interest,
in perpetuity (or pretty darned close). This is pretty amazing! Thank you
for all the support! What a way to honor Joe and support important bird
research in Colorado!*

challenges, and fun times.

Thank you all.

[cobirds] Joe Roller Memorial Green Big Year update

2021-10-20 Thread Scott Somershoe
All,
I'm so behind on blog posts and storytelling. It's not as if there have
been a ton of great birds to chase in the last month and I've found little
on my own, although the last week has been pretty awesome! More posts
coming real soon.

I've posted here about the Chestnut-collared Longspurs that I've found at
Chatfield, and I found ANOTHER one today (this time in JeffCo, and my SIXTH
in the west metro in 2 years). But here's a story about the birds I found a
few weeks ago. Many folks got to enjoy these beauties over the subsequent
week. That's what it's all about. Sharing and enjoying birds! These are
stunners too. One of my favorites!
https://jrmemorialgreenbigyear.blogspot.com/2021/10/chestnut-collared-longspur-then-more.html

Here's just a fun story and the Joe Roller connection. It's weird how all
this comes together sometimes. This is what makes this birding big year so
special.
https://jrmemorialgreenbigyear.blogspot.com/2021/10/a-couple-passerines.html

That Long-tailed Jaeger. THAT story. This is one for the record (aka crazy)
books.
https://jrmemorialgreenbigyear.blogspot.com/2021/10/this-time-i-got-jaeger.html

If you haven't pledged or donated, WHAT are you waiting for? Let's do this?
We're on the verge of topping $30,000 for bird research in Colorado. And
this is just from me walking and pedaling around Denver chasing birds! It's
been a total blast!
https://cobirds.org/CFO/Grants/

In case you're wondering, I got green big year bird #267 today. You'll have
to wait until I get a post up (or just check eBird alerts, or look here
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1BN60hkMRl_RtAZGTV1_2buQ9wgwwTXV9/view) to
find out what it is :) There are some great stories from this last week.

Thanks!

[cobirds] Joe Roller memorial green big year update

2021-06-05 Thread Scott Somershoe
All,
Spring is a wrap and it's time for a break from the bike and local birding.
It's a good time to go do Breeding Bird Surveys and other field work though!

Here's a sort of lengthy post on some amazing (and lucky) birding a couple
weeks ago.

[cobirds] Joe Roller Memorial Green Big Year update

2021-05-10 Thread Scott Somershoe
All,
The toughest part of a green big year is finding time to write up the
stories!

On May 4, Joey Kellner and I had a great morning of birding. After we
headed in opposite directions, I found an American Bittern at Chatfield SP
(Douglas Co, and oh so close to Jefferson Co). Here's a little tale of the
other birds we had that morning.
https://jrmemorialgreenbigyear.blogspot.com/2021/05/an-unexpectedly-amazing-morning-that.html

A post about the Green Big Day that Chris Rurik and I did on Friday is
coming soon (I promise).

Lastly, please consider a pledge or donation to support the Joe Roller
Memorial Research Grant! Click the link (scroll to the bottom). All funds
support bird research in Colorado. We are getting closer to raising
*$30,000* to support the next generation of ornithologists (once I get to
250 species, of course). It's never too late to pledge or donate!

[cobirds] Joe Roller Memorial Green Big Year update (150+ species!)

2021-04-22 Thread Scott Somershoe
All,
Just a little update on the green big year. I managed to get up a few posts
before I get too far behind on the storytelling and before migration gets
hot!

In spite of passerine migration not really happening yet, I'm at 152
species! I FINALLY got a Peregrine Falcon on Saturday, which was Joe's
favorite bird. Black Phoebe was species 150 with Peregrine coming just a
couple minutes later. I got a lot of really great green birds in the last
week or so, including a new CO bird for my list! You'll have to read to
find out the details!

Blog:
Joe Roller Memorial Green Big Year 2021 blog

As always, please consider supporting the new Joe Roller Research Grant
with a pledge or donation. All the funds go to CFO to support future
ornithologists (and they help keep me motivated)!
https://cobirds.org/CFO/Grants/

Specific blog posts:
Tues, April 13. Frozen water bottle, a broken shifter, and more. Quite the
misadventure, but..
https://jrmemorialgreenbigyear.blogspot.com/2021/04/wait-what-short-eared-owl.html

Wed, Apr 14 should have been another day off the bike, but alas I rode.
Then I found a LONG-BILLED CURLEW!
https://jrmemorialgreenbigyear.blogspot.com/2021/04/what-should-have-been-another-rest-day.html

Snowy, cold ride on Sat, Apr 18, but I got a lot of good green birds and
topped 150 for the green year!

All,
January is over and I'm one month (and well, now another week) into my Green
Big Year to support the Joe Roller Memorial Grant. What a crazy January and
some crazier birds. Thank you to everyone who has donated or pledged per
species. This is amazing!

I finally updated my blog with a post including some insights into my strategy
for the green year, a little January wrap up, and stories about a big ride on
29 January when I got all 3 rosy-finches and more! I hope you enjoy the birding
stories and the nerdiness of my planning! I'll update soon about trips this
past week (the wind!!) where I missed every bird, but I randomly found my first
Mourning Dove of the year! Take what you can get right? :)
