2013-06-25 Thread Paula Hansley
About 9 am today, Maggie Boswell and I came across a flock of White-winged
Crossbills on the Arapahoe Glacier Rim Trail in the Indian Peaks Wilderness
area!! We had turned around farther up the trail because of the very windy
conditions, convinced that we wouldn't see anything. We heard them
chattering and singing before we saw them. They were high in several
Douglas fir trees by the trail feasting on the cones. I think we
simultaneously said white wing bars?! All the birds had two bold white
wing bars, and we estimated the flock to be about 18 birds. There could
easily have been more.

Their song and calls are distinctly different than those of the Red
Crossbill.

We were about 3/4 mile to 1 mile up the trail. This trail takes off from
the Rainbow Lakes campground parking area. The Rainbow Lakes road heads
west 6.2 miles north of Nederland from highway 119 or the Peak-to-Peak
highway.

[cobirds] White-winged Crossbills - Larimer

2010-03-12 Thread mike
Michael Kiessig and I drove to Fort Collins this morning to look for
the White-winged Crossbills in Grandview Cemetery. We found them in
the SE corner in a snowbank. We watched them for a number of minutes
from about 20 yards away as they moved up and down from the snowbank
to a split rail fence. Finally they flew up into the tree branches
and then flew into the nest tree with the female leading the way. It
was around 9:15 a.m. when we spotted them. Thanks to Dave Leatherman
for keeping the birding community informed.

Using Dave's excellent directions I ventured out from work (1030AM) a
third time with hopes of finding the pair. Three's a charm found
both foraging at top of trees in extreme (10 sec glimpse) SE corner
near where this cemetery road bends west along golf course (Section
9). Also, some little utility shed or something on east at bend in
road. Tons of siskins around.

Becca Reid's so so photos (her words (haha)-my words would have been
excellent photos!):

2010-02-17 Thread Bob Brown
Cobirders,

I saw the White-winged Crossbill pair at Grandview Cemetery today between
12:30 and 1:00pm. As in the posts of late they were in the Southeast corner
near the maintenance shed and pump house. Dave Leatherman was already there
and he helped me to get on them. Thanks to Dave for staying with these birds
for nearly three months now.

[cobirds] White-winged Crossbills-Grandview- Fort Collins

2010-01-09 Thread 87211...@gmail.com
Hi all! It's been so long since I posted anything I had to re-learn
the process. So I hope this is correct. A fortuitously short trip
finding this couple. As I left two times previous without seeing
them. I happened to park right under the spruce tree the White-winged
Crossbills were feeding in today. This was around 2:45pm and the sun
shining from the west made for perfect observation conditions. I
never heard them at all due to their proximity to the raucous Mountain
Chickadee and Pine Siskin hordes they were intermingling with. After
about 5 minutes they flew off to the west and I couldn't refind them.
I saw them in a tree in Section 7 but just of the road that bisects
Sections 7 and 9 on the South side of the cemetery. Curiously, I did
not see or hear a Red Crossbill at all. A good lifer to start the
year. A thanks to Dave Leatherman for finding the birds. I think
Dave is responsible for more birds on my life list than I am!

Good birding to you all!

[cobirds] White-winged Crossbills at Grandview Cemetery on 3December09

2009-12-03 Thread Dave Leatherman
Nick Komar, Brad Biggerstaff, and I just saw (around 9:15am) the pair of
White-winged Crossbills at Grandview Cemetery. They were with a group of about
7 Red Crossbills in tall spruces north of the entrance and east of the ditch
(Section 11). The entire group flew off together to the east, but at least we
know the white-wings are still present in the general area. As stated
previously, persistence with these birds is probably productive and required.
When crossbills are located in the top of a tree, a scope is helpful in getting
the best looks.

Not sure where the birds would get free water at this time, as the cold temps
of late have frozen the ditch solid. That probably means that the odds of
seeing the birds on the ground along the ditch are less than they were,
although there is still snow to munch (which could also be anywhere in the
cemetery under the shade of a conifer) and ditchbank alkali soil with a south
exposure might be soft enough to consume in the afternoon.

[cobirds] White-winged Crossbills at Grandview

2009-11-30 Thread Connie Kogler
I headed up early today before work to take a chance at the
crossbills. I arrived at about 8:15 a.m., entering the main gate,
turning south and parking. I no sooner than got out of my car than I
could hear the male crossbill singing. He was in an ash tree, I
believe, with house finches and one robin. He flew down to the canal
with a Black-capped Chickadee and I got great photos. He then flew
and just about landed on my head before veering sharply away to land
in a spruce quite close. I know my hair is a bit.. well.. of it's own
mind, but never thought it'd be mistaken for a spruce tree. Green
jacket too.. hmm.

It stayed in the spruce before being flushed by a robin to another
where it landed high, only to be flushed by a crow. It flew to
another tree and was out on the branches eating for quite sometime
when I left.

I never saw any red crossbills or the female while I was there.

[cobirds] White-winged Crossbills--Grandview Cemetary/Ft Collins

2009-11-27 Thread markchavez
Today, I made a quick stop at Mcintosh Lake (Longmont) and could not locate the
White-winged Scoter but did find a Lond-tailed Duck. After this I decided to
attempt to find the White-winged Crossbill at Grandview Cemetary. At about
1:30pm, I was able to locate a very silent pair high up in the firs. Eric
Defonso and I watched for about 5 minutes before they flew silently to the
southeast part of the cemetary. I have a couple of very distant shots on the
site below in the uncommon-to-rare gallery.

[cobirds] White-winged Crossbills continue at Grandview Cemetery, Fort Collins, on Thanksgiving

2009-11-26 Thread Dave Leatherman
Several folks saw at least two White-winged Crossbills today (Thanksgiving) at
Grandview Cemetery, Fort Collins. As has been the case since they were first
observed on November 22nd, they were in the company of Red Crossbills. The
number of total birds in the flock seems to vary. Today it was 11 birds, most
of the time. While they were in the southeast corner in the tops of Colorado
Blue and Engelmann Spruce trees, I am fairly certain the number of White-wings
was 3 (one pink adult male and two yellow female/immature types, with one of
the latter appearing somewhat striped). I would say the Red Crossbills are of
at least two Types: mostly 5's (lodgepole crossbill) and maybe a small-billed
female 4 (Douglas-fir crossbill). I would caution folks that a couple of
the individual male Red Crossbills have weak wingbars, as Sibley shows for a
variant 1st year male. One Red Crossbill seemed to have a very large bill
and might have been a Type 2, but none of the vocalizations I concentrated on
sounded like a 5. The overwhelming sound one hears when they get ready to
leave, are leaving, and when they are flying overhead is that of Type 5, with
the overall chorus being muddied by the White-winged Crossbill voices heavily
laced with ch endings. Two people I talked to today mentioned seeing what I
thought I was seeing the other day, that being courtship type activities among
two of the White-wings. I have seen them fly around chasing eachother, giving
the toop calls in the process. Fred Lebsack (Cheyenne, WY) and Connie Alwood
(St. Louis, MO) said, while scoping the birds, they saw food exchange between
the two.

The crossbills can be anywhere in the cemetery where the big spruces with cones
are. There has been at least one Pine Siskin tagging along the last two days
(not all that much smaller and stripier than a young White-winged Crossbill,
but its bill is, of course, much smaller).

Also continuing at the cemetery:
Townsend's Solitaire (1) usually near the junipers
Golden-crowned Kinglet (1 female)
lots of both chickadees
lots of creepers
lots of Red-breasted Nuthatches
White-breasted Nuthatch (1) usually in American elms in the north part of the
cemetery, or along the ditch in the northeast part

[cobirds] White-winged Crossbills , Grand Mesa , Delta County

2009-05-19 Thread jxdrummo
? Cobirders :

? A family group of 6 White-winged Crossbills ( 2 adult males , 2 adult
females and?2 immatures? ) were seen around the Visitors Center on the Grand
Mesa , Delta County . They were associating with Red Crossbills ( probably type
5 but they did not call ) and dozens of Pine Siskins. The WWCR were
quietly?feeding exclusively on Engelmann Spruce cones and made no contact calls
or notes until flying off en masse.? If you are going to look for them I
suggest that you?recognise what Englemann Spuce looks like , find a tree with
ripened cones and wait for the crossbills to come in to feed. There appears to
be plenty of likely trees within a 300 yard radius of the Visitors Center .
Mine were seen about 200 yards in the direction of Ward Lake.?
