Joerg and Derek,
The white paper (which is nearly a year old) on our Web site does refer to
XML applications we had developed using Cocoon 1, so that's why there is no
mention of the sitemap of Cocoon2. In fact, that paper is directed to a
general web site audience who may be wondering about the
advantages/drawbacks of moving from an HTML-based website to an XML-based
website. So while we do mention Cocoon since we use it, we primarily focused
on general use of XML/XSL.
The Web site itself uses Cocoon 2 - with the sitemap performing the
functions as noted below of associating stylesheets with XML files - but we
didn't start using Cocoon 2 until after we had written the paper. However,
in Cocoon 1 the separation of content/style/logic was still achieved when
properly implemented within the Cocoon 1 framework. So I don't think the
point is incorrect, although I see where it may be a bit misleading or
confusing to someone who is familiar with Cocoon. We can look to clarify
this in the paper by stating that our references are to Cocoon 1 and that
Cocoon 2 handles these things differently and more effectively through its
use of the sitemap. But again, the paper is primarily directed to a general
audience (not Cocoon specific) and not surprisingly, one of the main
questions we'd hear when developing the paper was from Web developers who
were familiar with HTML and JavaScript etc., but not too familiar with XML,
and asked how you "connected" your XML files with your XSL stylesheets. That
basic separation of content from style is still a big mystery to many HTML
users. So that's why we explicitly mention the connection using processing
instructions in the paper.
Thanks for the comments. We'll try to clear up some of its misleading
elements.

Hello Derek,

yes, that's obviously misleading. But I'm not related to this page.
After the mention on this list last week I only asked them to be listed
on Cocoon's Livesites page and Jim Costello sent me this mail below. I
added the link in the CVS and forwarded this mail, especially because of
the impressive figures.
Now the report: It's the typical Cocoon 1.x handling using processing
instructions. But I don't know if they wrote their own component
handling processing instructions or if the report is outdated or simlpy
wrong. The X-Cocoon header clearly states that they use Cocoon 2.0.4,
but he also wrote (in the mail below) that they still have Cocoon 1.x in
use for a part of their homepage.
I'm cc-ing Jim Costello, so he can read and clarify your objections.

Joerg

I was browsing the white paper referred to; in
http://www.ctg.albany.edu/publications/reports/xml?chapter=9
it mentions that XML files are "connected" to XSL files
by placing links to the stylesheets at the top of the XML
files. It then goes on to say:
"This significantly simplifies content management because it
enables you to make changes to only one content file and
make no changes to the stylesheets because the content
is totally separated from the presentation.

Figure 8 illustrates how these XML/XSL transformations occur
within the Cocoon publishing framework. "

This is a little misleading and underplays the true value
added by Cocoon in completely separating content from
presentation - the "connections" happen in the sitemap;
there is no need to specify  stylesheets in your XML files;
as soon as you do this you are implicitly mixing content
and presentation.
If you are able, I think some changes would help
clarify the situation.

Yes,
We would be glad to be listed on your powered by Cocoon page. Our base
url is http://www.ctg.albany.edu. The entire site is done in Cocoon 2,
using standard XML/XSL with a docbook schema for our XML documents. The
site currently has close to 4000 pages produced by approximately 300
xml/xsl files. We expect to be producing about 10,000 pages by the end
of the year with no increase in the number of xml/xsl files. The main
content of our site are the reports, guides and studies that our Center
produces. We needed a sensible way to manage these documents, control
the source file and produce a variety of formats HTML, PDFs, multiple
locations on the site. XML and Cocoon has been the answer. The site has
only been live for about 1 month, but we've already seen a doubling of
our traffic and it's much easier to maintain and find our information on
the site now. It's all Cocoon and XML/XSL; no database involvement.

We also have a white paper on the site at
http://www.ctg.albany.edu/publications/reports/xml that explains our
rationale and approach to using xml and cocoon.

One other component of the site at
http://www2.ctg.albany.edu/egovfirststop/ uses Cocoon 1 and mySQL
database to power an information repository application. We will be
upgrading this application to Cocoon 2.

If you are using the latest version (2.1) then this is definitely a cached

Usually, you select the language on the first entry. But sometimes you can
notice other translations already deep in the site and in this case this
behavior is really useful.

Link Livesites: Unterkunft.de - Directroy for Accomodations

2003-03-13 Thread Christoph Gaffga
Hi,

We are running the site Unterkunft.de (http://www.unterkunft.de) with the
cocoon Software.
The site is running with cocoon2.0.4 on a Tomcat-Cluster with four
Dual-Xeon2,8Ghz machines. As DB we use MySQL4 (I know, its gamma, but it
works).

The purpose of the site unterkunft.de (german unterkunft means accomodation
in english) is to be a platform for small hotels and appartment owner to
promote their accomodation. A basic account is free and we don't take
pvision on bookings.

We are fascinated how easy the site development was with cocoon (we use our
own generators, and also wrote a serializer) and wich the cocoon Project a
sucsessfull golden future.

We would like to be added to the Cocoon Livesites List with our site

Times from our LAN, without the network latency, are of course much
faster, even though we haven't done any tuning yet, much less under load.

One point to consider: The site is served directly by Tomcat 4.1.18, but
images are served statically by an Apache httpd server, since the
version of Cocoon we used has a bug in the resource reader which causes
resources to always be served anew even if the original file has not
changed (maybe this is fixed now, I'm going to upgrade to the newest
HEAD version for the next iteration and check if this is indeed so).
Incidentally, there is a CSS file that is still served by Cocoon via
map:read and thus is resent again for each page :-(.

Please add the following info to

http://xml.apache.org/cocoon/link/livesites.html

Site: gynae.uk.com
URL: http://www.gynae.uk.com

Description: Site is for UK doctors and provides medical leaflets which can
be printed out and given to female patients. Doctors are often rather busy
and giving patients something they can read at their leisure leaves
patients better informed.

Tech Description:
Site is built in Cocoon2, but since it is entirely static it is sucked
using HTTrack and uploaded to a plain old Apache web server.
The PDFs are generated from the same source as the html by using Apache FOP
- the XSL:FO engine which is included in Cocoon.

Site was implemented by Alex Mclintock and Andy Dorman of Openweb Analysts
Ltd http://www.OWAL.co.uk

Future Development:
It is envisaged that a future version of the site will use the Wyona
content management system which is integrated with Cocoon.

Available for java/perl/C++/web development in London, UK or nearby.

2002-12-28 Thread Vincent Majer
Hi,

I don't know if my site can be listed in your "Live Sites", but i'm using
XML/XSL files with tomcat/cocoon 1.8.2 to produce a static html website,
for all the "informative" pages (around 1000 html files are created this way).
You can see that here :
http://www.histoiredumonde.net

It's very useful, because no need of cooon on the production server, you
serve simple html files. But the advantage is that u manage xml files only !
I'm using the extension.
I've put the cocoon logo, in my home page, in the bottom.

So, if u think u can give me a link back.. i'll be proud.

Thanks, and sorry for my poor english.

Before you go live you may want to make sure that the page
background is set to white for all pages.  As it is, it defaults to the
browser background which may not be white. In that case looks rather like

Hi there,
I'm just setting up a new site which is dedicated to using Domino and Apache Cocoon. It's due to go live by the start of next week.
I know that this is a fairly specialised area in the world of Cocoon but thought you might be interested to have a look at the site - www.piacevole.com - and look forward to any feedback about it that you might have. I hope to be putting more in detail articles about Cocoon up there in the near future, specifically aimed at the Domino Developer audience.
All the best,

not often enough apparently... also, it believe your site hasn't been
added to the cocoon_2_0_3_branch which is the current source for the
xml.apache.org/cocoon website.

Diaña/David: I'll be happy to recommit the site when Cocoon CVS
cocoon_2_0_3_branch is up to date.

diArt - http://www.diart-berlin.de/ is an online art gallery that
supports the commercial side of the "Künstlerförderung Berlin", which
promotes young artists with work contracts. The artist manufactures one
or several works of art, which are transferred to the "Künstlerförderung
Berlin". The Website will help in lending or selling this artwork. The
money from this is used to support the programm and so on.

The Frontend uses:
- Linux + Apache HTTP + Tomcat
- Cocoon 2.0.3

In the backend works:
- Windows 2000
- IBM DB2 7.2
- OS:DRT DMS Server
(http://www.optimal-systems.de/industrie/software/drt.php)

All content is created in the DMS system which uses the DB2 for data
storage.
Cocoon acts as the view in a MVC framework with a special controller and
businesslogic layer.
All generators are xsp pages, which include the data from the backend
via xml that is stored in the session.
The application uses dynamic html, pdf and vrml output from different
stylesheets.

Many thanks to all who are contributing to Cocoon with code or
knowledge, working with Cocoon is really fun!

Technical: The catalogue is stored in 31 xml documents, one for each

The structured application for Framemaker, the DTDs and the Cocoon

that the user can select from a link on the XML->HTML page.

... and when the guys a cocoon finally provide a working jdk1.4

will start to get more interesting.

... I am also thinking on the "editable" XML docbook solution, we
may use webdav to control versioning / file access.

2002-05-16 Thread Conal Tuohy

http://www.nzetc.org/ (currently redirects to http://nzetc.vuw.ac.nz/ but
that is only a temporary url)

This is the site of the "New Zealand Electronic Text Centre".

The site publishes books that have been scanned and marked up in "TEI"
format - http://www.tei-c.org/Guidelines2/index.html

THere are only about 10 documents at the moment, but there's many more to
come.

XSLT is used to convert the TEI documents to XHTML, and to extract portions
of the documents (chapters, etc).

DirectoryGenerator is used to produce a list of the documents available.

ImageDirectoryGenerator and XSLT is used to produce thumbnails from large
JPEG files.

XSLT is also used to add banners and navigation menus to the html, including
both static html files and the transformed TEI docs.

The site is generated off-line using Cocoon 2. In the end I used wget to
mirror the website because I couldn't work out how to make Cocoon produce
the web off-line, in command-line mode ;-)

The site was launched last night - today I've been sleeping late! ;-)

A big "thank you" to the entire Cocoon community for your work on Cocoon and
for the helpful advice!

2002-05-06 Thread Rune Sandnes

Another live site you can add to the Cocoon 2 livesites list:
TINE, the largest Norwegian dairy company is at http://www.tine.no/

The site is mostly in Norwegian, but has an international section. (TINE
is the company that makes Jarlsberg cheese)

It runs on Cocoon 2.0.2 under Websphere, and with Squid as accellerating
proxy to handle load. The reason we chose to use Squid was that
Websphere performed poorly compared to Tomcat when we stress tested with
Siege. (http://www.joedog.org/siege/)

We discovered that the reason for Websphere's poorer performance was
logging, when we turned off our log routines performance was improved.
We kept Siege anyway as it does give a performance boost.

The site has a functions that are potential processor hogs, mostly in
the name of design. Politically incorrect, all titles are generated SVG
(serialized to PNG) to get the correct font. Pictures are scaled
server-side, and have rounded edges.

Processed pictures are stored in the database for caching purposes, and
the generated titles are cached by Cocoon, so the site would be
adequately fast without Squid, but it IS faster with Squid, and FEELS
faster for the user.

Thank you all for the invaluable support on this list!

Klapp Media,

Re: Livesites: Be Blogging

watching eagerly. I think this (and other complete applications like it)
will make a large
difference for enlarging the cocoon community. Put bundles of code like the
blog
you are building up, rather than 'hello world' handwaves!

When you are ready, an announcement at http://www.scripting.com/ scripting news
will show off cocoon to hundereds of prospective users.

Hopefully you will also include a short discussion of the history of
development and
issues that you ran into while making the blog, while the subject is fresh
in your experience.
This , in my opinion, would be a significant addition for the documentation
project
underway over on cocoon-dev.

best regards

Hi Folks,

Self-Roster.com is a new way to plan and deliver general purpose rotas for shift

It uses Cocoon 2.0.2 and is hosted by Imagineis.com

Any comments good or bad, very welcome indeed.

2002-04-12 Thread Alex McLintock

I would appreciate it if this site got listed in the Cocoon2 livesites list.

URL: http://www.OWAL.co.uk/
Software: Cocoon2

The site is fairly simple but is designed to be easy to update. It includes
a pdf brochure containing most of the website in one easily printable
document.
It is static rather than dynamically generated for speed reasons. The site
is combined with non Cocoon/java technology as it uses the popular
slashcode software for its latest news.

new LiveSites entries: belfoot.tv & elysee.tv

2002-04-11 Thread Candide Kemmler

Hi,

I'm happy to announce two new entries to the "LiveSites" section of the
cocoon2 website:

http://www.belfoot.tv/
http://www.elysee.tv/

We've used cocoon 2.0, with JBoss as an application server (GUI is
swing-based) and PostgreSQL as the DBMS backend.

Although this is not mentioned on the websites, fractals sprl should be
credited for the software development, while ion+ (banner) has done all
of the graphic design/xsl stylesheet work.

Please tell us what you think by contacting me: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Thanks,

Candide Kemmler

2002-04-03 Thread Christoph Gaffga

Hi !

We like to run our site with cocoon 2. At the Moment we are using it for
HTML-Generation, rendering dynamic SVG to PNG for banner-generation an for
Price/Availabiliy-Tables, PDF for Print-Preview etc, and PS for dynamic
generation of accomodation-catalogues for print.
Our site is running on http://www.urlaubstage.de. There is also a WAP-page
under construction under http://wap.urlaubstage.de.

We are also selling our Application as ASP and like the way how the content
shows up in differen Design on other Pages.

Some Examples are:

http://asp.triplemind.com/urlaubstage/query/index.html
http://asp.triplemind.com/accomundo2/query/index.htm
http://asp.triplemind.com/fewotip/query/index.html
http://asp.triplemind.com/bischofsheim/query/index.html

and many more.

We wrote our own producers for generating Pages from DB Data, so that the
design can be cascaded. If some content, template or static file is not
found in one application, the generator tries to get it from the ancestor
design.

After working over a longer period of time with cocoon 2 (we tried cocoon
1.8 before, prior we used JSP) it wourld be very nice for us to be in your
list of Livesites.

It would be nice to hear from you,
sincirly
