A new major release that supports JDK 17 and JDK 21 is no longer online-compatible with a 4.x cluster using the same JDK. (We stated we do not want to encourage nor force operators upgrade versions and JDKs in the same step.) Therefore the new major release needs to be accompanied with a new major version, i.e. 6.0. I don't believe this causes additional work beyond the trivial. Basically, I'm only reactively updating dependencies where required to get them to work on JDK21. I'm not proactively going to update any dependencies unless required by the JDK upgrade and environment. The 3 heuristics I use to determine whether to advocate for a dependency bump: # Is there a CVE? # Do we need to bump the dep to support some other change (another lib bump, JDK version change, etc)? # Is there new functionality we need from either a new dep or a version update? In the case of things working on JDK21, I'm limiting my considerations to #2 above; only updating where required to have things work on JDK21. have to update dependencies that haven't been touched in 5-6 years (there are
plenty of versions in between with breaking changes and long change logs to

Some of the updates that were needed for JDK17 were committed from 4.1. Whatever will require a previous JDK version to be dropped (we maintain two) - it waits until the drop. The only issue is that there will be breakages until we have it in CI, as people do not test their patches on the new version, but we can't have everything. I was also fixing every now and then the broken trunk. We have some dependencies that need to be bumped (chronicle*, mockito, bytebuddy), some startup args that need to be tweaked, and some various and sundry other things. I'm working through test failures now but when I have something that builds and passes on CI my plan is to attach it here even if we don't yet have things configured on CI. I had CI scripts setup quickly (we changed them as they crossed paths with the new CI project). But again, the rest of the production code was updated quite a lot and there is high chance many things will work out of the box with JDK21. Jamm is not tested with JDK21. There is an open issue but no one got to that. And there were some things with the crawling internals we would probably want to revisit. Got my fingers crossed here as well. I'll be getting this together for internal
CI infra (which closely mirrors upstream, both circle and the new standalone
jenkinsfile scripts) and circle back here once I have some insight into how
this looks w/regards to CI. All this work will be reflected in CASSANDRA-18731
later this year.
My hope is that we don't run into as many pain points as we did from the 11->17
transition, but if we do I have all the context primed in my head to burn
through it in CI at this point. I'll keep you posted [~e.dimitrova]

I suspect that, as you said, CASSANDRA-18255 - you wanted just to make it possible to start Cassandra on JDK21 and then gradually add CI and whatever else is needed. Is that correct? I noticed that you updated the simulator - there is CASSANDRA-18616, which is waiting for review. It will update the simulator for JDK17, so there is an overlap with this patch.
