[jira] [Comment Edited] (NETBEANS-1396) Maven: Downloaded javadoc / sources not attached to artifact with classifier

2019-10-26 Thread Thomas Zimmermann (Jira)

Thomas Zimmermann edited comment on NETBEANS-1396 at 10/26/19 9:49 PM:
---

[~jgneff]
You are correct, the Javadoc isn't used because of a silly bug, see my PR with
the fix
[here|https://github.com/apache/netbeans/pull/1548/commits/b02c59fda5f962f071e77f920c2115b7940f4a4d#diff-f1b8dd6458da9fb8ddb0ba46d941d35dL266].
 NetBeans is looking for `javafx-graphics-13-.jar-javadoc.jar` instead of
`javafx-graphics-13-linux-javadoc.jar`. Even if that was fixed though, OpenJFX
uses the new HTML output format from javadoc 9+ and NetBeans doesn't parse that
correctly yet. And even if it parsed that correctly, OpenJFX stores the HTML
pages in the javadoc jars prefixed by module name, so NetBeans wouldn't find
them. All this is fixed in my PR. I don't want to rush the nice NetBeans
developers though, it seems like they want to get 11.2 out and this isn't that
critical IMO.

> The Maven artifacts org.openjfx:javafx-controls and friends use a jar with
> classifier for each operating system for the actual classes, javafx-controls
> is only an empty shell. If I understand correctly, sources / javadoc are
> attached in maven by having additional artifacts with the classifiers
> "sources" and "javadoc". Both are available for javafx-controls etc., but
> NetBeans doesn't use them for javafx-controls (linux) (the platform specific
> version with the actual classes). I think that's a bug, NetBeans should use
> the sources and javadoc artifacts for all artifacts of the same groupId +
> artifactId.
> Steps to reproduce:
> # Download attached maven project
> # Right click Dependencies -> Download Javadoc + Download Sources
> # Open App.java, see that no source / docs are attached for
> javafx.application.Application

Thanks for this great research. Would be excellent if you'd start a thread on
the Apache NetBeans dev mailing list just to draw people's attention to what

[jira] [Updated] (NETBEANS-3296) Attaching JavaFX Javadoc and Sources

2019-10-26 Thread John Neffenger (Jira)

 [
https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/NETBEANS-3296?page=com.atlassian.jira.plugin.system.issuetabpanels:all-tabpanel
 ]

John Neffenger updated NETBEANS-3296:
-
Description:
h1. {anchor:attaching-javafx-javadoc-and-sources}Attaching JavaFX Javadoc and
Sources

I have been unable to attach the JavaFX Javadoc and Sources to their modular
JAR files without encountering errors in their use by NetBeans. Attaching the
Sources allows you to navigate directly to the JavaFX source code of a field or
method. Attaching the Javadoc allows you to open an external Web browser
directly to the appropriate page of the documentation. These features are two
of the main reasons I use an integrated development environment.

There are several issues encountered in this task, making it easy to lose sight
of the bigger picture. This is my attempt to provide that more general context
and gather all the related issues into one place.

h2. {anchor:issues}Issues

Some of the problems related to using the JavaFX Javadoc and Sources have
already been reported:

* [NETBEANS-236|https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/NETBEANS-236]: Incorrect
brace spacing in try-with-resources
* [NETBEANS-1396|https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/NETBEANS-1396]: Maven:
Downloaded javadoc / sources not attached to artifact with classifier
* [NETBEANS-2197|https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/NETBEANS-2197]: Missing
code completion and Javadocs in maven projects with classifier
* [NETBEANS-2290|https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/NETBEANS-2290]: nb-javac
1.71 fails to parse JavaFX Sources

The two issues concerning Maven projects will be fixed by the following pull
request (a work in progress):

* [apache/netbeans#1548|https://github.com/apache/netbeans/pull/1548]:
(NETBEANS-1396) Missing code completion and Javadocs in maven projects with
classifier

I created the following issues for the new problems described here:

* [NETBEANS-3297|https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/NETBEANS-3297]: "Attach
Javadoc" really means "Attach Sources"
* [NETBEANS-3298|https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/NETBEANS-3298]: Invalid
Javadoc root javafx-sdk-13/doc/javafx.base
* [NETBEANS-3299|https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/NETBEANS-3299]: Adding
Javadoc and Sources to Global Library fails
* [NETBEANS-3300|https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/NETBEANS-3300]: nb-javac
2.0 fails to parse JavaFX Sources
* [NETBEANS-3301|https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/NETBEANS-3301]: Modular
Ant project fails to run without nb-javac
* [NETBEANS-3302|https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/NETBEANS-3302]:
Non-modular Gradle project fails to recognize Javadoc
* [NETBEANS-3303|https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/NETBEANS-3303]: Modular
Gradle project fails to recognize Javadoc and Sources

There are also related issues for the JavaFX Javadoc and sample NetBeans
projects on GitHub:

* [openjfx/javadoc#6|https://github.com/openjfx/javadoc/issues/6]: Attached
Javadoc does not follow Maven convention
* [openjfx/samples#39|https://github.com/openjfx/samples/issues/39]:
IllegalStateException running NetBeans Modular Maven project

Each issue is listed again at the point where it's encountered below.

h2. {anchor:projects}Projects

I use the six sample NetBeans projects described in [Getting Started with
JavaFX 13|https://openjfx.io/openjfx-docs/] to explain what goes wrong. I
examine the projects in the following order:

# Ant ("Java") Non-Modular
# Ant ("Java") Modular
# Maven Non-Modular
# Maven Modular
# Gradle Non-Modular
# Gradle Modular

The sample projects are found under the
[NetBeans|https://github.com/openjfx/samples/tree/master/IDE/NetBeans]
directory of the [openjfx/samples|https://github.com/openjfx/samples]
repository on GitHub. All six projects fail in one way or another to use the
attached Javadoc and Sources. In some cases there are workarounds, but the
workarounds often introduce a new set of problems.

h2. {anchor:environment}Environment

I am running [Apache NetBeans 11.2|https://snapcraft.io/netbeans] with [OpenJDK
13.0.1|https://jdk.java.net/13/] on [Ubuntu 16.04.6
LTS|http://releases.ubuntu.com/16.04/]. I configured the snap package to track
the _edge_ channel for an early release of NetBeans 11.2.

h3. {anchor:javafx-sdk}JavaFX SDK

I set up the JavaFX SDK and JMODs on my system as instructed below. These files
are required by the projects using Apache Ant. Note that the Ant projects
define two different names for the JavaFX SDK Global Library: _JAVAFX13_ and
_JavaFX13_.

Download the [Latest Release|https://gluonhq.com/products/javafx/] of the
JavaFX Documentation, JavaFX Linux JMODs, and JavaFX Linux SDK.

{code}
~/Downloads/openjfx-13-javadoc.zip
~/Downloads/openjfx-13_linux-x64_bin-jmods.zip
~/Downloads/openjfx-13_linux-x64_bin-sdk.zip
{code}

Extract the JavaFX Linux JMODs and JavaFX Linux SDK into {{~/lib}} with:

{code}
$ mkdir ~/lib
$ cd ~/lib
$ unzip ~/Downloads/openj

I tried installing and using NetBeans 11.2 today on Windows too, encountered
various problems, disabled the Windows Defender, and everything went well. I
think that may be blocking something. Others have noticed something with
Windows Defender too. Just so that we can see what the cause of the problem is,
not as the solution, but in order to find out the cause, can you close
NetBeans, remove the userdir, stop the Windows Defender (e.g.,
https://www.xrite.com/service-support/windowsdefenderturningoffon), and see if
you can still reproduce it.

Please read again: I used a fresh copy of NB 11.2 and it runs on JDK 11.0.1
(Fresh copy means no user dir before)

And yes, I'm on windows. Why should disabling the defender makes a difference?
What is your guessing about that? We have two buttons here with different
functionality and clicking on the one button "activate" doesn't download the
JavaFX stuff which is needed here.

[~neilcsmith] I used a fresh copy of NB 11.2 and it runs on JDK 11.0.1. Nothing
else before. When I go to projects -> Java with Maven -> Java Frotnend
Application it shows me two buttons, where I should "download and activate"
missing features (JavaSE + JavaFX implementation for the OS) or just "activate"
which activates the Java SE support, but w/o the Java FX impl. which is needed
for that project type. So after only activating the Java SE feature the Wizard
is still blank and shows nothing. I don't know whether I should create a new
but ticket for that or add or continue it here.

Have you started with a fresh user directory? Can you start from scratch,
making sure you're not reusing a user directory and attach the messages.log
file in the newly created user directory?

Does it make a difference if you disable Windows Defender?

now? Whether this is after using the installer and whether you can reproduce
with just unzipping the ZIP? Start a new thread on the mailing list if you want
to discuss this there.

Does it make a difference if you disable Windows Defender?

Have you started with a fresh user directory? Can you start from scratch,
making sure you're not reusing a user directory and attach the messages.log
file in the newly created user directory?
