have to do anything else to get the software fix?

No, seriously: enough openmoko-members read these mails.
It seems unimaginable that none of the design team has seen this
thread. It's about time they spoke up or that someone at openmoko
(Steve, Michael, Neng-Yu Tu ?) gave us some more info about the design
departement and how they implement the openeness of the project
there (no offence meant). Because it seems they are pretty closed to

Re: Purchasing Neo Freerunner in the UK

2008-07-25 Thread craiglofuts

Just thought I would add another voice of support for TrueBox, excellent
service!

One point to note is that they aren't too happy about shipping to an
alternative address, for fraud prevention reasons. I did managed to persuade
them to ship to my work place after a couple of exchanges. I am sick of
having couriers leave expensive items under the door mat!

Can't help with the O2 question. I'm using a rather old (~4yrs) Orange SIM
card and it is working just fine.

maybe it's because i'm running it from SD, but the ASU is everything
but fast here. There is even a slight delay when typing in numbers in

Actually, I tried all of the above ones (most recent versions/snapshots)
except FSO. Only for OM2007.2, making phone calls worked out of the box. On
ASU and Qtopia I couldn't make phone calls (or receive).

Optically, I likes OM2007.2 best, however, it is awfully slow and constantly
has a load 2. Why is this?

I use the ASU image. It has the speed/reliability/maturity/app-availability
of the Qtopia platform, and also supports GTK/Gnome/X applications too.

And, ASU development is being funded by OpenMoko, and it will be their
official shipping distribution, another reason to expect it will be the more
stable and feature-full of the distros.

I have yet to get a single application to build on my Ubuntu machine.
Everything I've tried ends up missing some library or other and the

there was discussion on this list, in another thread, I think, that much
of the toolchain's .la files still refer to gta01 or neo1973 directories
and that this causes a lot of problems. I'm not sure if that's what is
causing my issues or something else, but I'll echo what another list

| expect.
|
| According to the statement below, the clock rate on the SD-card side is
| far above the effective data-rate on the CPU side. We do 16MHz on one

| What about fixing the rate on the sd-card side to far lower level, not
| only while ideling, even if accessing? Lets say 5MHz. Would it make any
| sense and would it decrase the clock noise significally enough, to be
| able to just ignore the hardware patch?

It's not a crazy way to look at it, but the latencies add together
currently. So we have to sit it out while the Glamo independently grabs
the bulk data from the card, then when it completes we get an interrupt
and basically memcpy it to the requested place. So we delay the overall
action by slowing the SD clock.

It's worth a try using sd_max_clk if you can see the effect of SD
traffic on GPS still.

| I haven't found the file to place any permanent kernel opts yet, to test

Thanks.

This is something I also wanted to know for the choice of a new card.

So we may say that up to 10MBytes/s, max speed of the microSD matters.
After it should not much. (?)

One more question though : if the card is slow, throughput will be

Or does it just had to time to wait and CPU / glamo bus are as much

There's no need for paranoia.

That #ifdef makes it seem to me like there's going to be a menu item in
Exposure to let the user pick which keyboard to use, but there's no code yet to
implement that configuration choice. That'd be the right way to do it IMHO--
let the user switch between keyboards on the fly-- no recompiling necessary.
That's the kind of configurability that a product manager or designer would
put into a spec, for example, and I'd agree with it.

As for implementing it, does Carsten want help? Maybe the Qtopia API makes it
easy to add preferences/settings and to query some system-wide database for
them (I don't know Qtopia, so I'm just saying it *might*). In the best case,
our woes might be solved with 5-10 lines of Qtopia API code replacing that
#ifdef, plus some adding of options to the configuration system.

If that's what's going on, then all this anguish would simply be another case
of too many users trying to actually *use* a product that isn't anywhere near
ready to be actually used yet (I'm guilty of that for sure).

The MCI / MMC stack in Linux negotiates the clock speed with the card,
all the microSD cards I saw say they can handle 16MHz and that's what
they get.

We can't sustain the actual throughput that implies right now, although
soon we might be able to get a little better in the driver.

Have to make clear what we mean by slow, it means latency to NAND
inside card as I understand it. So every time you ask for some data it
is slower to start sending it and chokes more often waiting on getting
next block from NAND. ---

| Same question if we lower the SD clock rate. Is it equivalent to

If it's slow at the card it will block Glamo memory less (probably...
arbitrator in Glamo might mess that assumption up) and definitely block

I'd imagine that any distro that doesn't use X (i.e. Qtopia on FrameBuffer)

This should go into the Adjusting the Volume section of Getting Started.

Re: GSM Antenna Connector part of Closed System?

2008-07-25 Thread Scott

Vinc,

I know its the same connector as on a Razr or Motorola C168i, so I think
its the same that Motorola uses.

The problem is the way the inner case is designed I can't get the Razr
connector on it. It has to reach really deep to reach the FR's
connector. So I don't know which one to order?

Now the engineers at OpenMoko surely designed the inner case case around
some existing connector right? If I knew what other phone had that kind
of deep recess I could order the adapter.

The plug has to reach a good 1/4 inch though the inner case to fit onto
the connector.

If you take the back cover off, look near the GSM antenna, you can see
tow recessed screws, next to one of the screws is the external GSM
antenna connector.

Were any 850s available on the 25th? Or did it just remain sold out from

Hey
I just wonder why the 900 was delayed with ten days when the 850 ten
pack was sold out?

I was so happy to see that I was going to order my 10 pack of 900 on
Monday, but suddenly the date was 25th instead 15th.
When I saw that the 850 ten packs was sold out, I also saw that the
900 was delayed.

Is the a connection here?

And why are the 900 delayed?

Now that you have your phone, what are you doing?

2008-07-25 Thread Breakable
Hi there,
Just wondering those of you who have the device already, what are you doing
with your new device?

I just got my GTA02 three days ago. I am trying to get it work like a normal
phone for now.
I tried using OpenMoko os for a while and was impressed with the ammount of
packages in the repository.
Unfortunatly I was not able to get GPS show up onthe TangoGPS, even when the
command line seems to be working.
I struggled to improve calling volume, but not very successfull. The power
management was not good enough, even after the opkg upgrade.
Seems not to go into suspend, because the battery gets depleted.

Currently I flashed with the Qtopia instead. Now the software is a little
more reliable, much nicer UI, but no repository ! :(
And the suspend seems to hang after a really long time, only thing helps is
removing the battery.

I hope those issues will be resolved sometime soon, now that we have an
increasing developer base that have the new hardware.

So what are you doing?

Regards,
Breakable

I wrote a simple Java GUI app using Jalimo the other day just as soon as I

It worked great, just as described on the wiki/links from wiki.

The key was I went ahead and used the SWT framework (which is also available

a couple recommended opkg installs
built little gui in Eclipse (compiled using the swt jar)
copied the class to the phone
ran from the command line...
And life was full of joy!

did you upgrade the software and flash the uboot?
calling volume is surpringly enough _not_ controlled by the slider in the
dialer but only through alsamixer -- once you foudn a nice setting you can
store it and it will come back everytime you call.

flashing u-boot and using a recent kernel makes suspend/resume working
rather acceptable (wakes up reliable and saves power, though it keeps
waking up frequently), may corrupt your sd card though, at least if the
4gig.
you need to change the powermanagement to dim first, lock then (shortly
press power button).

However, once I opkg upgraded this morning, I ran into the problem a few people

It was the mention on the bug report Jeff linked to in the ASU

was just a matter of poking around to find the up-to-date ASU
repositories there and update the opkg feed configs.

Heh, glad to help.

To answer the original question: Exposure is ASU's way of turning on

i think it's gsmhandset.state (someone correct me when wrong) and give the

using alsamixer.
if you tweaked it to your heart's content, do

GPS Maps

2008-07-25 Thread Matthew Lane
Hey everyone,

I'm wondering how I can use tangoGPS with maps. I've gotten my GPS to
get a fix, and tangoGPS picks up the data, but I have no maps! How can
I download maps and use them with tangoGPS? I'm assuming I'll put them
on my microSD card, but how do I let tangoGPS know where the maps are?
Do I use openstreetmaps.org? Any help with this would be great, and if
no one else wants to, once I get it working I'll document it in the
wiki. Thanks!

Re: FR and iPhone - how can they be compared?

2008-07-25 Thread Sparrow
Howdy Flemming,

Neat idea's about the FR and custom hardware. I currently have an
arduino project that works great with the Freerunner, connecting both
via blue tooth and via usb. The arduino is used to control a custom
irrigation solution I build on my roof using earth boxs, and the sends
the data back to the FR for alerting and monitoring. If you have not
checked out the arduino micro controller, take a peek
(http://www.arduino.cc/) .

Best regards,
Steven O'Reilly

Today, I read [1]. I also read [2], and it is basically the reasons
there that made me buy the Freerunner some weeks ago (look
at the question part). That, and that it is a cool device to hack

The Freerunner is doing very well, being recommended by FSF,
OSM, etc, and got a lot of publicity slashdot, linuxdevices.net
 and many other places.

Also it is very nice to use as a phone. I use it as my primary
phone, with OM2007.2. As soon as I get some time, I will try
to write some code for it too. There are a few issues, but if
there where nothing to fix, the phone would not be of any
interest to me. In stead of seeing limitations, one should see
potential:) That is the beauty of free software :D

One simple way to make custom hardware, is to add
something to the USB port, since the USB_ID pin is
connected to an ADC. I bought a lot of 5 pin mini USB
plugs, and inside one, you can actually fit a complete
 mini circuit.

I have one that works as a flash light, and one for measuring
humidity. I plan to put the sensor inside, once I have written
 some code that actually works.

I also ordered a small camera, so I will try to see if it works
out of the box or if some code needs to be rewritten.

The camera I bought does not have the correct electrical
interface, so I need to make an adapter (USB or BT). It is a
wireless cam, which I will mount on my radio car:) I will add
some hardware and make a simple GTK app, so I can control
the car from my phone (and see the output from the cam). I
hope I ever get the time to do this.

I currently have mine working(OSX 10.5.x) and here is quick down and
dirty process it took to complete. I am sure there are many ways to
make this successful.

Power up FR and connect via USB

Download the lastest AjZaurus USB Drivers and install them.(
http://www.dsitri.de/wiki.php?page=AJZaurusUSB ) The 10.4 version will
work with 10.5

After install reboot laptop

Enter system preferences - network - select en2(It should be
connected)

Now configure the interface for IP 192.168.0.200 and enter your
router(GW) for your default on your laptop.

Reboot laptop

Now you should be able to connect via ssh from laptop to FR.

Enter system preferences - share and select internet option on
the left side of the window. It will then show in the window to the
right the en2 interface. Place a check mark in the box and make sure
there is a check mark in the internet box also.

On the FR run the command route

Scp /etc/resolv.conf from the laptop to /etc/resolv.conf of the FR.

You now will be surfing through the laptop. Keep in mind that you will
need to scp /etc/resolv.conf each time after reboot of the FR unless you
take some other measures.

Ringtone and vibration configuration

2008-07-25 Thread Dylan Reilly
I am hoping to make some scripts, etc. for incoming call scenarios.

1) What mixer setting in alsamixer controls the ringtone volume?
2) What alsa profile is used when a call is first incoming? gsmhandset.state?
3) How can one control the state of the vibrations (on, off, and ideally etc.)?

I know the answer to this must be somewhere but despite looking near
and far I could not find it documented.

Thanks.

I really can't say because I don't have any personal linux systems
outside of work. I plan on installing linux on an older laptop soon so
I can have dedicated dev machine for the FR.

I have been having issues with getting my MAC ready for flash update,
but it mostly has been finding enough time to dink with it.

Next task is getting the phone operational. I am one of the unfortunate
ones with a SIM that can't be read. :(

Power up FR and connect via USB

Download the lastest AjZaurus USB Drivers and install them.(
 http://www.dsitri.de/wiki.php?page=AJZaurusUSB ) The 10.4 version
 will
 work with 10.5

 After install reboot laptop

Enter system preferences - network - select en2(It should be

Now configure the interface for IP 192.168.0.200 and enter your

 Reboot laptop

Now you should be able to connect via ssh from laptop to FR.

Enter system preferences - share and select internet option on
the left side of the window. It will then show in the window to the

there is a check mark in the internet box also.

On the FR run the command route

Scp /etc/resolv.conf from the laptop to /etc/resolv.conf of the FR.

You now will be surfing through the laptop. Keep in mind that you
 will
need to scp /etc/resolv.conf each time after reboot of the FR unless

 Hey everybody

I have seen (In the Wiki) that it should be possible and that it
should be quite easy to administrate (Webacces, package mangement
etc.) the Neo Freerunner though the MacOSX Leopard. I was just
wondering if anyone on this list has experience with this combination
 and how difficult it is.
I can see that handheld-linux.com, has some software that is
available, but is these necessary to make these two work together?

list subscription question

Is there a way to subscribe to this list, but only receiving mail if it's in

I check the list every day, but so many come in my inbox everyday that it's

I've set up some gmail filters, of course, but it still shows up in all

Everyone I have spoken to using the GTA02 handset has mentioned large

Re: list subscription question

2008-07-25 Thread B
I recommend using gmane. Get a newsreader (I use thunderbird, which has
a newsreader built in), and subscribe to the
gmane.comp.handhelds.openmoko.community newsgroup on the news.gmane.org
news server.

In thunderbird the result is I get all the email headers, threaded just
like in my normal email folders, but it only checks for new messages
when I look at the newsgroups. The emails aren't merged with my normal
mail, so no filtering is needed. Only the headers are downloaded, so
retrieving the new mails is quick, and I only get the body of the emails
that I click on. You can't search through the body of emails, but the
online version of the newsgroup is better for that anyway.

In order to post to the list you'll need to still be subscribed, but you
can turn off message sending. You can do that on the regular openmoko
lists config site. The first time you post to the list from gmane you
will have to answer a gmane confirmation email.

Hope this helps,

Ben B.

I have also experienced echoing, and even worse is the GSM interference
noise. This has been improved by flashing with the ASU image and opkg
upgrade to the latest kernel, but overall it is frustrating that the core
functionality of making phone calls is not working solid... I do hope that
it greatly improves soon! :)

Re: strange problem with Intenso 4GB SDHC card

2008-07-25 Thread arne anka
well, the card is a kingston 4gb class 4.
yesterday i downloaded a map with tangogps and meanwhile the fr went to
suspend. afterwards a few directories were misisng.
trying
ls /media/card/Maps/om/adirectorynotthere/
gives errors (something w/ read access i think)
so i decided to delete the entire /media/card/Maps folder from within the
fr -- but that fails with read-only filesystem. and indedd magically the
card is mounted read only.
mount /media/card -o remount,rw
changes that, but next thing i know is read only filesystem.

not sure if that fits into the original problem with the fried boot sector.
is there a trac ticket where i may add those informations?

FWIW, I had this problem for most of my GTA01 use unless I tuned down
