Re: My Suggestions for FDOM

For EBooks I have opie-reader working on the image from Qtopia.net but I
don't have enough spare time to work out how to build it for any of the
other variants. If anyone can build Qtopia apps for anything other than the
Qtopia image and can tell me how to do it, I'll have a go (or if they want
to have a go themselves I can provide the sources) - but I don't have the
spare time to experiment with the build systems to get something that works.

 This bug has been around for quite a long time and is critical and
 affecting many users. Can anyone actually suspend and resume
 reliability? Without being able to suspend and resume, using the
 gta02 as a phone is not really possible for myself anyway.

 I am more than happy to assist in any way I can, but I am not a
 kernel hacker, so can't make code changes at this level to fix it.

I use testing and have had no problems for the last 3 weeks, maybe
more. Actually there was one update which I think broke it, but
testing updates daily so was fixed the next day.

I don't recommend testing ... well ... because it's testing. But I can
honestly say I've had a great experience. I don't modify the base
system, I just wrap around it :) ... and testing has nearly always
worked as a daily phone for me, without tweaks.

It may be just a touch soft but nothing like qtopia ;)

I use testing too but no luck :( , tried opkg upgrade right now and
just copied kernel version from wsod freerunner by ssh:

 Hi!

 I haven't tried 2008.9 yet but assuming its the same as in 2008.8 you
 just need to decompile the theme file (using edje_decc)
 ~/.e/e/themes/*.edj or the system-wide default in
 /usr/share/enlightenment/data/themes/illume.edj.
 Have a look at the resulting output (should be a directory containing
 images and an *.edc file) and change the background file if existant,
 then recompile it using edje_cc and you're done.

 Seemed quite a lot of work for me just to change a background but I've
 discovered that E has a lot of differences compared to other desktop
 environments and I'm starting to like the principle.
 I just tried it on the theme found here
 http://52grad.de/.stuff/freerunner/ and it worked out fine. Haven't
 tried on the default one though - I don't even know if there's a
 background image specified. Remember to use an image in 640x640 as
 you'll be rotating your screen :)
 Hope I could clear this to you and sorry for my sloppy English ;)

thanks for your explanation, i will try that soon.

Re: Debian fails to boot after some reboots

2008-09-26 Thread Sven Bretfeld
Hi list-members

Craig B. Allen [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes:

 There are some workarounds that seem to prevent this from happening,
 but I don't know whether they apply to Qtopia.
 See http://docs.openmoko.org/trac/ticket/1802

Strange enough Qtopia seems to know that suspending is not good for
the SD-card. I don't know why, but every time I have a working Debian
system on the SD card, Qtopia refuses to suspend automatically (i.e.
the powermanagement settings are ignored). After I forced the first
suspend by 'apm -s', everything works like normal again. But then, the
SD card's boot partition is corrupted.

I tried the workaround with the 00sd_idleclk script which doesn't work
for me. Qtopia won't wake up again, and I have to remove the battery.
There is another workaround mentioned in ticket 1802: automatically
repairing the boot partition by a 'dd' command which is placed in
/etc/init.d/mountall.sh. This one works as expected. It's just a
little clumsy to have that command inside an init script, since one
has to reboot qtopia before one can boot the SD card.

It would be better to have that command executed with every shutdown
of Qtopia. I'm not familiar with init and shutdown scripts. Can
anybody give me a hint, where to place that command (or a shell
script) in order to execute it automatically prior to every shutdown?

If it works, I will add that solution to the ticket's commentaries.

Thanks

Sven

 Thought that would be the answer :(

 An idea would be a config dialog to repurpose the aux button. I dont
 use the lock function (the button sucks as a regular use button anyway)
 and could perhaps be used to kill the top application in the viewing
 stack as 2007.2 power button did. Its not only kobo which has problems
 like this as a couple of times I have had a unresponsive display
 probably caused by dialogs not on top.

I don't know if that would be possible but I'd love that AUX+click served
as right click (or any other way to trigger right clicks).

 Exactly. The logic exists in debian. wpa_supplicant associates with the
 access
 point then some scripts apply the configuration you set
 in /etc/network/interfaces that matches the AP it associated with.
 Unfortunately in 2007.2 the bit that applies the settings is missing. For
 someone who knows their way around the inner workings of the debian system it
 would probably be easy to fix, but I don't. Since ASU was moving to use
 connman instead of the debian method of network management I didn't see the
 benefit in digging deeper at the time.

Well, today morning I started investigating the Wifi of the FR gadget:

I configured the MAC addr of the eth0 of FR into my AP;

I enabled the Wifi in the settings and FR saw my home SSID and asked for
the key; this AP at home is WEP protected and the 'password' (which I
normaly use in my laptop) is something like this wpa_supplicant entry:

 network={
 ssid=tarara
 scan_ssid=1
 key_mgmt=NONE
 wep_tx_keyidx=0
 wep_key0=42FEEDDEAFBABEDEAFBEEFAA55
 }

I've typed in the key in the FR again and again but it always said
after some time 'ERROR Unable to join network'

then I SSH'ed into the FR and configured by hand:

# cat /etc/network/interfaces:
...
iface eth0 inet dhcp
wpa-conf /etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa_supplicant.conf

# cat /etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa_supplicant.conf
network={
ssid=tarara
scan_ssid=0
key_mgmt=NONE
wep_tx_keyidx=0
wep_key0=42FEEDDEAFBABEDEAFBEEFAA55
}

and restarted the eth0 interface with:

# ifdown eth0  ifup eth0

this produced the following output:

it would be nice to create some icon in the Om2008.9 desktop to launch
this ifdown eth0 ifup eth0, but I already learned that this is
another complex storry and at the moment I can't compile the eet library
for modifying the desktop at all; so I have to live with the command on
the sheel (which is not a big thing);

in my office the AP runs WPA-PSK and it seems that it is not associating
at all; the entry in /etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa_supplicant.conf reads:

network={
ssid=santaclara
key_mgmt=WPA-PSK
psk=XXX
}

again, it is the same as I use in my laptop; and I have no idea why it
does not associate; can I launch somehow the wpa_supplicant in FR in
debug mode? or I will enable the debugging in the AP and have a look
if nobody has some other hint on this;

thx

Very interested onlooker

2008-09-26 Thread Paul
Hello everyone,

I have been on this list a few days and thought it only decent to
introduce my presence.
I am using Linux (Mandrake, now Mandriva) since 1999 and discovered the
Freerunner at about the same time that rumours started to appear about
what is now the Android phone platform.

So far I have not gotten either a Freerunner, but with the latest things
around Android I am more moving towards the OpenMoko concept.

At this moment I use a Qtek WinMo PDA/Phone. I don't call or SMS a lot,
I mainly use it for addresses, agenda and some text editting. I have
some big questions concerning the Freerunner, and I hope someone here is
able to tell me the answers:

Is the Freerunner able to run a PIM-like application (if so, what would
that be)?
Would I be able to take calls through Bluetooth (I have a Parrot Minikit
handsfreeset in the car)?
Is there a possibility to install, for instance, Abiword on the
Freerunner? I have seen in the archives and on the Wiki that people have
installed Gentoo and Debian on the MicroSD card, so that sounds positive.

Looking forward to your responses, and hoping they are all positive!!
The Freerunner videos on Youtube that I have seen so far look very
promising.  :-)

 Is OM working on something else entirely, or taking a vacation? :)

 I get the impression updates are staged fairly well for stable. I use testing

 I guess it comes down to your avenue of participation :)

   Nicola

 We would really prefer to use FSO and later SHR,

FSO should be the future, while the qtopia phone x11 part of 2008.x will be
ported to FSO or will be substituted by some other apps (Zhone?) i asked on
the list for this but got no answer. It would be nice to know this, but it
seems to be a secret actually.
Due to information lacking, personally (take it with care!) I suppose qtopia
phone x11 will be dropped, for two reason:
1) developing is encouraged on FSO
2) openmoko does not provide an SDK toolchain and OE support for the qtopia
part of 2008.x, for example there are no staging for qtopiamake, qmake and
so on in the openmoko oe build tree... you may always bitbake qt4-x11-free
that provides staging files, but these are incompatible with qtopia-core
library deployed on 2008.x

So it's right to use FSO for your application.
For Michael: i asked that to have some clarification only, as official
Qtopia SDK are incompatible with qtopia-on-x11 and i think qtopia on x11 is
not developed at Trolltech, so qtopia.net will not support it... right?

we are going to develop a indoor navigation system and perhaps have to add
 some sensors via Bluetooth or I²C and as I understand dbus would be great
 for
 sensor fusion.
 I tried to add the libs as mentioned in the wiki, but I wasn't successful.
 It
 would be very cool if someone could add the QT4 libs to the toolchain or
 could tell which packages are exactly needed, and I don't know how I can
 use
 qmake with the toolchain. Until now I have only developed QT with kdevelop.

 Geets
 Michael

Well, you may use OpenEmbedded, in the stable tree you have qt 4.3, in the
development tree you have qt 4.4.
FSO is based on the development tree of OE, so you may use the provided
makefile to build your images, qt4.4, and your application.
I was not yet able to do it yet as there are some issues, howewer was able
to build qt 4.3 on the stable branch of OE and some my applications, so it's
may be a little hard or confusing, but you can start developing.
In the meaning, if you want a stable and simple environment to start
developing, you may use the vmware based trolltech sdk, avoiding to use dbus
for the moment, and experimenting qt behavior on a small display while your
OE tree came up (it needs a lot of time!).
In your code you may use some conditional include to read sensors in other
ways than dbus on qtopia, and let the application be compatible with fso,
qtopia, and if openmoko provide support for 2008.x too.

Where may we start a wiki page on this argument (openmoko, openembedded,
fso?)

[OM 2008.9] Keyboard discussion

2008-09-26 Thread Christoph Siegenthaler
Hi

The more I use my FR the less I like the current input methods. Raster's
keyboard is a great improvement but still hardly useful if you're typing in a
language other then english (e.g. swiss german).

Well, I've got a few questions regarding input methods:
- Is it possible to use qtopia handwriting recognition with om? What about the
its configuration tools? Is there an openmoko project to create something
similar?
- A few weeks ago, someone posted a mockup of a partly transparent keyboard
covering the whole screen (Can't find the post atm). I think this is a great
idea to increase tapping space while typing on such a small screen. Has someone
already tried to code something like this?

Best regards, Chris

P.S. Why can't the default openmoko images not provide descent alsa state
files?

Did you know you can copy the /usr/share/dict/ files from your PC to your

So, if you have GNU/Linux on your desktop system and it is translated, you
can have keyboard working with your language.

If not, I think it wouldn't be very difficult to find those dictionaries.

I guess what happens is that Qtopia starts scanning all the files on the
SD card. It is designed to be run from internal flash with your MP3s on
the SD card, so it scans all the files there and makes a database of
them. With a Debian system on SD, this probably takes hours, and during
that Qtopia probably refuses to suspend. You can turn this feature off
in a file called Storage.conf lying around somewhere, IIRC.

 Is the Freerunner able to run a PIM-like application (if so, what would

I have never read about anybody daring to use evolution or kontact.

 Would I be able to take calls through Bluetooth (I have a Parrot Minikit

Don't expect that to work automagically. Pairing with a Bluetooth handsfreeset

 Is there a possibility to install, for instance, Abiword on the

 How?

IIRC tap at the top of the screen moves menu selection up, tapping at the

In the meantime, I've managed to get PyQt4 working (hooked up against Qt-x11);
this eliminates the need for a toolchain (or even building apps in general).

You can try setting up apt-proxy on your laptop, download all needed packages
on localhost (aptitude download will suffice). You just need to select or
configure proper architecture (man apt.conf /APT::Architecture). Quick Google
search shows also this: http://www.linux.codehelp.co.uk/apt-cross/re01.html

Or you can create a local Debian mirror, if you have available disk space,
although that would take some time (maybe if there's a way to mirror only
selected arch...).

Have you tried everything from http://wiki.openmoko.org/wiki/Usb_networking ?
Maybe try using different machine/connection/operating system?

Good luck,
harnir

Just swipe your finger downwards. A swipe to the left is backspace and
a swipe to the right adds a space. An upward swipe changes keyboard
layouts.

This is assuming you're talking about the 'default' labeled keyboard
that comes with FDOM (Raster's keyboard).

 Even if you go through 5 new lives and get the menu, hitting quit with a

 How?

 IIRC tap at the top of the screen moves menu selection up, tapping at the
 bottom moves it down and tapping in the middle accepts the current menu item.
 If you try to treat it as a point-and-click app by tapping Quit you end up

You might need extra kernel modules. Could you give the exact error message?

What I use is this:

iface usb0 inet static
address 192.168.0.200
netmask 255.255.255.0
post-up iptables -A POSTROUTING -t nat -j MASQUERADE -s

post-up echo 1  /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_forward
post-up iptables -P FORWARD ACCEPT

+ in /etc/udev/rules.d/z60_openmoko.rules
KERNEL==usb0, SUBSYSTEM==net, ACTION==add,RUN+=/sbin/ifup usb0
KERNEL==usb0, SUBSYSTEM==net, ACTION==remove,
RUN+=/sbin/ifdown usb0

Of course you also need something like this on your freerunner:

iface usb0 inet static
address 192.168.0.202
netmask 255.255.255.0
network 192.168.0.0

As for your wifi problem, could you give more details? Can you connect

[FDOM] new release 20080927

2008-09-26 Thread David Samblas
Hi all,
on http://compartida.net/openmoko/FDOM/ you have disponible the new FDOM
release.
I have just erase previous release because there are some annoying bugs
withs calls and no sound.
But his has gone thanks to nickd,

This release is not as tested as 2008.08 ones but include things, that
sure, gonna make you smile, 29 Games :), orrery 2.0, a mplayer frontend
pythm, and things than have the last updated not anounced jalimo with
java se and me, navit, linphone (not tested but surely some people will
smile twice, isn't it Michel Siloh? :) ) in addition to FDOM
classics :)

As you may notice this is a large amount of programs so in order to not
blow away the home with icons I have included a raw,dirty, and a little
bit slow script in pygtk that acts as popupmenu /usr/bin/FDsubmenu.py,
surely a c/elf program will be more quick and integrated but just I have
no time to learn it(yet). Futures versions will include the icon image.
Feel free to modify and add features of course.

Regarding colaborations , First thanks nacho and armin because without
them this release will has not been posible,
if you want to colaborate reporting bugs,improvements or sugestions we
have a project in http://projects.openmoko.org/projects/fdom/ with a
devel list
http://lists.projects.openmoko.org/mailman/listinfo/fdom-development

thanks to armin, we have also a svn server svn://zoup.org/Fdom with an
2008.09 that we want to transform in a better FDOM but here I call for
help, Armin has his neo temporaly out of order, and I was unable to put
the svn checkout to boot in a sd card, I want to do this to be able to
have a quick way to summit changes, and have a more efective way to make
various people to tweak the distro at same time.
So if any one succeded to boot froma svn extraction please contacr us to
tell us how
I will try to update the wiki tomorrow with the modifications but any
help will be apreciated here too :)

I have not included the kernel image because still the 2008.09 one

 When I was running 22007.2, two cool programs I had from Angstrom were:

 # Quasar - a x11 mplayer front end.
 This is not perfect for the freerunner - it ideally needs some UI work

 however, i have launched mpg QVGA videos with it and watched them as

used pythm isted but I take a look at Quasar

 # Claws Mail
 A lightweight mail client - with a bit of UI tweaking from the view menu
 makes a completely usable mail client. Since we have qmail, I guess this
 is not necessary, but it's a thought.

 # FBreader?
 I would love to see an ebook reader but I think there are big dependency

 # Games
 Personally, I would prefer to get rid of sudoku and to possibly to get
 kobodeluxe on there.
 Though not ready yet, keeping an eye on

 # lint-wifi
 Personally, I prefer lint-wifi to mofi. I really like being able to see
 the network info it displays (ie IP, DNS DDHCP) as it helps
 troubleshooting stuff when things dont work :P
 http://wiki.openmoko.org/wiki/Lint-wifi

 # wpa_supplicant.conf
 Possibly modify the default the wpa_supplicant.conf to automatically
 connect to unencrypted wifi hotspots? :-/

 I can't help too much - my stupid OM setup script - (givemeteh)apppznow
 is pretty much obsolete as a result of FDOM :) so I will help in the
 ways I can. I have joined the development list and considering all the
 spare high speed bandwidth I have, I've set up a mirror -
 http://files.tdobson.net/openmoko/freerunner/fadom/

We are also working in a script that way, any help well be apreciated
and I will taka a ook at your script too
 At some point soon I'll get rid of the 'a' in fadom :P
I have the mania of call it fsdom... so dont worry, please update the
mirror list in the wiki

 Cheers for the good work, keep it up! :D
Thank :)

 Tim

RE: Install Debian without internet access

2008-09-26 Thread Matthias Camenzind

i did first: iptables -N new_chain
this worked,but only one time i could ping another pc in my network and opkg
recived 404 Error (is trying to connect buildhost.openmoko.org , [I changed to
correct directory but there arent packages.sig files]).
Ping to WAN is somewehre disabled, i couldn't find where yet. So I removed the
line in install.sh (Debian installer)
with the ping signal. But I lost connection to internet. Now the problems is my
laptop has no access to internet. I will fix this an try again.

Wifi problem: wifi finds a network (only one unsecured, but not unsecured form
laptop) but can't connect. Same from the command line.
udhcpc output: Sending discover... (3x)
 run-parts: /etc/udhcpc.d/99avahi-autoipd exited with return code 1
this repeats endless

 You might need extra kernel modules. Could you give the exact error message?

 What I use is this:

 iface usb0 inet static
 address 192.168.0.200
 netmask 255.255.255.0
 post-up iptables -A POSTROUTING -t nat -j MASQUERADE -s
 192.168.0.0/24
 post-up echo 1  /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_forward
 post-up iptables -P FORWARD ACCEPT

 + in /etc/udev/rules.d/z60_openmoko.rules
 KERNEL==usb0, SUBSYSTEM==net, ACTION==add,RUN+=/sbin/ifup usb0
 KERNEL==usb0, SUBSYSTEM==net, ACTION==remove,
 RUN+=/sbin/ifdown usb0

 Of course you also need something like this on your freerunner:

 iface usb0 inet static
 address 192.168.0.202
 netmask 255.255.255.0
 network 192.168.0.0
 gateway 192.168.0.200

 As for your wifi problem, could you give more details? Can you connect
 your laptop? What exactly are you trying, and what errors do you get?

That's fantastic :)

I'll wait until then to upgrade, then.

Thanks for the news,

RE: Install Debian without internet access

2008-09-26 Thread Matthias Camenzind

Now I'm istalling debain on my freerunner.
This is what i did on ubuntu:
sudo iptables -N RH-Firewall-1-INPUT
sudo iptables -I RH-Firewall-1-INPUT -s 192.168.0.202 -j ACCEPT
sudo iptables -t nat -A POSTROUTING -j MASQUERADE -s 192.168.0.0/24
sudo iptables -t nat -A PREROUTING -p tcp -s 192.168.0.202 -d 192.168.0.200
--sport 0:65535 --dport 0:65535 -j DNAT --to-destination 192.168.1.1
sudo iptables -t nat -A PREROUTING -p udp -s 192.168.0.202 -d 192.168.0.200
--sport 0:65535 --dport 0:65535 -j DNAT --to-destination 192.168.1.1
sudo sysctl -w net.ipv4.ip_forward=1
sudo iptables-save
and I installed and run Firestarter (not sure if it was necessary)
