Freerunner A6 for sale in Ireland or New Zealand

2009-10-19 Thread Matt Brown
Hi,

I'm selling my Freerunner. I purchased it from Pulster over a year ago
and used it for several months before I received an Android phone and
sadly my Freerunner has been sitting gathering dust since then. I'd
rather someone who had the time was using it for something useful, so
I'm putting it on the market. It's in excellent condition:

GTA02 A6 - Serial 8A8810247
- Original box
- Charger with foreign adaptors
- 512MB microSD card and SD card adapter

No USB cable (missing in shipment from Pulster)
No Stylus/Laser pen (lost)

I'm asking 200 euro for the phone + shipping, any reasonable offer
considered especially if you can pickup the phone from me and save me
having to organise shipping :)

I'm currently in Dublin and will be in New Zealand over the next few
weeks as well. I can ship the phone from either location as necessary.

Replies by private mail please.

Just for everyone's information, plain water works just as well--you can
just fill the bottle back up. They used to ship it without any
solution, with instructions to just use water, and it always worked fine
for me (although having a spray bottle is nicer).

Also, if the bubble is showing up in the same place with each
application, it's probably caused by a piece of dust. You need to make
sure everything is very clean. It's very easy for a piece of dust to
get in there while you're applying.

I'm not sure if it will be possible after it has dried, though. I've
never tried to reapply later (and I think they say you shouldn't, if I
remember correctly).

using North American Freerunner in Paris?

2009-06-19 Thread Matt Luzum
I have a North American version of the Freerunner (850/1800/1900MHz),
but I'm going to be moving to Paris for 2 years starting in the Fall.

Does anyone know anything about whether it will work there? Is the
1800MHz coverage any good, or is there only 900MHz in a lot of places?
It will be most important in and around Paris, but if you have info
about the rest of France and Europe, please share that as well, since
I'll want to do at least some traveling while I have the chance.

Also, since I'm spamming the list anyway, if anyone has any other useful
information it would be much appreciated (Do all providers provide gprs?
Is it better to sign a contract or pay as you go? Is there anything I
need to know about French cell phone providers? or France in general?
etc.). As you can probably tell I'm from the U.S., and I'm just
starting to learn French, so it's a little difficult for me to get a lot
of good information.

I apologize if this is not an appropriate use of the mailing list, but I
haven't been able to find any information specifically about the
900MHz vs. 1800MHz in France and I figured if anyone knows it will be
people on this list.

Thanks in advance

Well, I do know that almost everywhere in the US uses the 1900MHz band
(the phone T-mobile sold me 6 years ago doesn't even work with 850MHz,
so I had to buy a different one that would work near my parents' house
in the rural midwest).

My impression was that this isn't the case for Europe in general,
though. It certainly seems a bit much to assume that they only use the
1800MHz band most places, although it would be great for me if that is
the case.

I'm not sure how generally useful this feature is.

I think having an easy, intuitive, constant way to copy/paste text on a
device with no keyboard, will always be useful.

Furthermore, I'd like to know that a long tap on a phone number will
always offer to Call Number, SMS, Lookup Contact, Add to Contacts.

A long tap on selected text should offer to Save Note, Send SMS, Send EMail.

A long tap on text which includes a date/time should offer to add an
event in the calendar too.

A long tap on an address should offer to find it on a map.

I'm sure there are many other instances where a long tap on 'something'
should allow an action to be performed with it.
People should chime in if they support it.

At the moment, the FR is bearly able to compete with an old Palm Vx in

Timeline / Journal

If anyone is looking for a project...

I was toying with the idea of taking various events such as call logs,
sms, gps, wifi, bluetooth, etc and storing them in a journal and posting
them to a website every so often, when net access is available.

The website would display them using the Simile Timeline [1] component,

Numerous examples are available [3]

It occurred to me that this format would suit touch screen well.
Kinetic scrolling, tap for action; read sms, return a missed call, view
calendar event.

I don't have the talent to implement this on the phone, but it would be
a neat app, and one I'm not aware exists on any phone. yet.

If anyone is interested, pick up and run with it please.

One alternative might be to have separate posting addresses which all
go to the same list, but result in a short subject prefix being
prepended.
This would allow group synergies to emerge, while also enable
effective client-side filtering.

Problems with this approach include :
*members who filter won't be part of the synergies. (members who
filter don't care about synergies)
*some people are passionately against subject prefixes. (there will
always be a mixed response)
*the mailing list software may not support such a setup (but may
does or could be made to, postfix recipes, etc)
*possible issue of replys utterly munging the subject (if the
message has a know prefix, do not add another prefix)

Headphones, Adapters

2008-08-23 Thread Matt

Hi all,

I tried to use headphones with my FR but I only get sound in one ear.
I've tried a phone set with a mic and a normal set with a 3.5 - 2.5 adapter.

If I move the plug I can get sound to one or other ear, so I guess it's
not a software issue.

Do I need to buy a special adapter ?

Thanks

Re: 2008.8 Goes to sleep too fast!

2008-08-10 Thread Matt
You can alter the suspend time in Settings/Suspend
The longest delay is either 60second or off.

You can edit
/usr/lib/python2.5/site-packages/expos/suspend.py

It's pretty easy to figure out how to alter the 10,30,60 second suspend
times.
For instance change the occurance of 60 to 300 and you'll have the
option to choose 5mins delay.

You need to delete suspend.pyo in the same folder and restart xserver.

Works, tested.

Re: FR and debian, seems it's progressing

2008-08-10 Thread Matt
I think Openmoko could take a leaf from the book of Debian.
Their Stable/Unstable/Testing approach allows users to pick the build
which suits their needs and allows the users, to manage their own
expectations.

Admittedly, stable releases take years, but they tend to be rock solid.

Re: FSO ringtone

I don't mean to be overly critical, the process you've described is
trivial enough, and thank you for sharing, but why is is designed like
this?
Surely if the exact same steps are performed before building the
software, it will be much easier for many more people.
It just seem insane to be hardcoding references to sound files for
functions that people will habitually want to change.
Ring tone is probably the first item of customisation a new user will
want to change, and they will expect it to be intuitive.

On another note, the rule.yaml file looks intresting, where can I find
out more about that ?

Still not as good as a real user interface, but better than being

I just can't let go of the idea of having several profiles activated at
the same time, so I'll spam you all once more (last time, I promise).

 Locations:
 - work
 - home
 - cinema
 - lecture hall
 - hospital
 - amusement park

 Activities:
 - coding (default)
 - none (default for others)
 - meeting
 - in a phone call
 - lecture / conference
 - watching a movie
 - exercising (biking anyone?) (it could detect the wii fit bluetooth MAC
addresses in the air as well)

 Time based:
 - after bed time
 - tuck in time (put the kid(s) to sleep)
 - lunch
 - working hours
 - Simpsons

 Other:
 - phone is upside down on a table (only flash lights, no buzz or
 ringtone)
 - battery is running low
 - far from home (send e-mail with GPS coordinates every hour)
 - vacation (don't send GPS coordinates every hour)
 - bluetooth headset is in range (and paired)
 - home media center (and asterisk) is in range (redirect music)

Being able to have just _one_ context/setting/mood at a time is so
 restricting.

When I go to lunch (12-13, or 12 am to 1 pm) I generally put the phone
in my pocket so I want the ringing sound to be louder. BUT, if I'm in a
lunch meeting with a client (the meeting's in the calendar) I don't want
to be disturbed (except by family and day care numbers), hence there
should be no ringtone at all.

This is also true while exercising (louder), unless it's tuck in time
for the kids and I'm at home (Wii Fit).

If I'm at the cinema the GSM should turn off, unless I'm at a conference
(in my calendar) which would only turn ringtone off (or send it to my BT
headset at a low volume). If I'm a presenter I'd like all calls to be
rejected (unless family + day care) so I won't be interrupted while
using the FreeRunner as a remote control (next slide, etc - too bad it
 didn't come with a laser beam/LED as well :).

I'd love the idea of having more than one profile (context) active at
the same time - my daily life simply isn't that simple that one profile
fits. I don't want to be locked up in old locked down cellphone
behaviour - I want to be free. ;)

 / Fredrik Wendt

Much of what you have described was articulated in this [1] thread,
including profile aggregation.
I strongly encourage people to post their similar ideas so hopefully
developers will be able to anticipate future requirements.

With regards to applying multiple profiles (which I really like), some
thought will have to go in to resolving conflicts.

For instance, if we have two rules :

On location event set profile foo;
On temporal event set profile bar;

The profile may be opposites, if they trigger at the same time, which
should win out ?

Am I right in thinking that oeventsd [1] is essentially a rules
engine, looks that way.

So, for instance, to implement the feature 'change ringtone depending
on caller'.

1. Would ophone look up the callerid in contacts for a ringtone, and
pass it to oeventsd to be handled by Playsound?

2. Or will oeventsd be the brains, taking the callerid and processing
the rules, which may involve factoring in time, location, contact,
contact group memebership, etc, and initiating the most appropriate
action? (play sound, hangup, divert, answer and play message, start
recording)

3. Or might oeventsd hand off to a separate rules engine altogether?
This would allow others to write their own dbus compliant 'rulesd' in
whatever suits them (prolog, lua, etc).

Interesting times indeed.

Thanks

Re: Rules based policy engine

2008-07-22 Thread Matt Joyce

It would be good to make sure that it's easy to have prolog or some
other rule based system autogenerate and interface to the small domain
specific language. I think the way it would work is prolog would use
some event handlers to maintain a table of facts that the DSL would then
 use as its base database.

Also, datalog would be a much better choice than prolog. The outcome of
prolog programs depends on the order in which rules are defined. This
isn't true for datalog, which has cleaner semantics. The two languages
 have nearly identical syntax.

 -Rusty

I took some time to read the wikipedia pages for bother Prolog [1] and
Datalog [2], both interesting.
I found some Prolog libs for Python but not for Datalog, but I found
source code for Datalog - A deductive database system for memory
constrained devices. [3], a quick look suggests it written in C.
Might be interesting.

I think it's important to keep jotting down potential uses for this
system, I think I may whip up a wiki page at some point.
With inference in mind, a small gui app which simply asks Where are we now ?
The user enters Work, or Home, etc.
The app informs the rule system about all the GMS towers it can
detect, and WIFI networks and the tag the user entered.
A pretty simple way of training the system, I think.

How about a location based home pages on the browser or rss.
I'm at the station (because the rule system infers that I am), show me
the traffic news rss.
At work, show me my Nagios status page.
At home my weather station page. (is that sad?)
Anywhere else, google please.

I'm pretty sure GSM locations would work for this sort of thing.

Comments welcomed.

A domain specific rules language implemented in ruby embedded in c?
The ruby layer does not seem to be thin enough to justify that.
(ok, writing rules in ruby is kind cool. As would any other real

Even javascript would not be bad.)

Btw. I like the idea of a rules language. But why not something simple

That's a hand full of yacc and lex magic and some stupid engine code.
I mean, what we can match is pretty much defined by the fact that we
 match numbers and SMS.
A hand full of logic expressions on pre defined attributes should be enough.
My email filter is not smarter too, but email a lot more complicated.
 And it works well.

If someone puts the effort in to something like Prolog or Ruleby i will
not argue. But it seems a bit overkill to me.

I agree with Rusty's idea (somewhere in this thread), if it's built as
modules, the rules processing could be done by various efforts.
Python, Ruby, Sieve, Prolog, Datalog, C; how fantastic that we have the
chance (and choice) of any (all), including those we haven't thought of
yet. Fertile times indeed!

For some (me) the FR is a toy of sorts, something to explore.
For others it's a tool, something to solve a problem with.
I suspect it's partly an act of rebellion too.

Somethings like :

App1=D=[event handler, current states]=[rules

App2=B
App3=U
App4=S

I'm not clear on the existing role or use of DBUS, are existing apps
(gsmd, gps, mplayer, contacts, clock, diary, etc) already DBUS aware,
do they publish their events, or states queried?

On Tue, Jul 22, 2008 at 4:27 AM, Russell Sears [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

I fell out of this discussion for a while, but I'd much rather see a
very simple C API that delivers events from DBUS with bindings for
python / your favorite language. The event system and programming model
(rule based, prolog, python, ...) should be completely separate modules.
That way, you don't need to design your application around being able
 to receive external events.

Also, if we couple the event system to the programming language, then
all other languages become second class citizens. That would suck.

I'd like to clarify my original post. (Also, I still haven't looked at
D-BUS, it might already do most/all of this stuff.)

These two lines are meant to be function invocations, perhaps in C or in
 python:

 register_event_handler(/phone/incoming_call = true,
 mute_music_callback)

 register_event_handler(/clock/time = 600,
   play_alarm_callback,
 loud_buzzer.ogg)

register_event_handler() should be a C function that takes three arguments:

1: A char* containing a query written in a small domain specific
language. I don't think we need support for more than:

  a) =, , , ...
  b) Conjunction + disjunction; and ||, which means all of or one
  of these rules match

The following two would be nice, but might make things harder to implement:

  a) Parenthesis for grouping
  b) Negation

xpath is a well-known language, and is close, though I don't know how
well existing implementations deal with events (ie: third parties making
changes to the underlying xml document). Also, I think xpath is
 probably too complicated.

 2: A function pointer of type void (fcn*)(void *)

This gets invoked when the evaluation of the query changes from false to
 true.

 3) A void *

The application program controls what goes in the void*.

Applications should be able to build all sorts of things with these
primitives, including new domain specific languages.

It would be good to make sure that it's easy to have prolog or some

a language with dbus bindings. And because it can probably result in
very readable syntax. And it's based on Boo, which is very nearly
Python, and thus more accessible to most programmers than Prolog.

Does dbus allow you to specify your priority when listening to an
event, and to prevent it from being published to other listeners? If
not, then the first step is to separate the relevant dbus events and

That's a valid point.
However, if a GPS dependant rule cannot get a fix (because it's off) in

It may be possible to use GSM call towers to give a good enough location

Looking at this rule again :

'reliably' is the operative word here, and I may consider GSM based

If a profile switching approach is taken, we could switch to the
vibrate with exceptions' profile and shutdown GPS.

On the other hand, if always-on GPS is what's needed, then future models
will have to address the power requirements.
Or, perhaps a case mod for larger batteries is required.

Presumably geo-mappers have this problem already.

What I meant was, if the rule engine/event broker has geo defendant rules,

My efforts as far as applying my inference engine to the OpenMoko platform
basically consist of a few ideas rattling around in my head -- nothing
 concrete.
I'm not a professional at this stuff, just an enthusiastic amateur trying
 to
follow in the footsteps of some of the very interesting early AI research
projects (most inference-based approaches to AI died out in the 80's, but a
 few
are still around). To that end, most of my work has been focused on things
 not
directly useful to a phone platform.

I think it's important that we use an existing general-purpose platform
 such as
Prolog (at least, it's about as general purpose as logic programming
 gets...).
This saves us from reinventing the wheel and also prevents us from thinking
ourselves into a corner -- a general purpose system will likely be much
 more
extensible and flexible for powerusers (and with this device, who isn't?)
 than
something we dream up. Taking an inference-based approach to setting up
 the
rules in the phone could allow us to create rules that are more abstract
 than
most of the examples I've seen on this list. Instead of telling it don't
 use
the ringer when I'm at the office, it could be don't use the ringer when
 I'm
doing work. Work would be defined by other rules, such as your
 proximity to
the office, whether or not you've scheduled an appointment in the calendar
 with
contacts from work (think lunch meeting), and if you have a deadline that
 isn't
marked as complete and it's only an hour away (you're probably workign
 furiously
to meet it). That's just an example I created just now, and not
 particularly
good -- good examples are hard to think of, but that's largely because the
possibilities are endless. As one other person on the mailing list noted,
 the
possible configurations of the rules engine that are nonsensical outnumber
 the
meaningful ones by millions to one :)

That babbling probably wasn't very helpful to anyone, but maybe it will at
 least
build enthusiasm. I think the gist of it was mostly this: make it more
 flexible
than it needs to be, and also make the rules capable of building on top of
 each
other to create more complex conditions. Just my $0.02 :)

 Ryan

I find myself in a real quandary about this.
On the one hand I want more flexibility, more inputs, more actions and such,
because I feel creative uses will emerge from that.
On the other hand my experience as an IT practitioner and technologist,
instinctively tells me to keep it simple. I've spent most of my IT career
trying to remove or prevent unnecessary complexity.

I think that was the point of the person who recommended the OpenWRT

similar: if these three things are true, do X. Then I have a stack of

inference-based rules engine written in first order predicate logic, it has
 the
unique ability of adding rules with side effects (basically executing native
code) when certain things happen... I think it would work nicely (it basically
is for this purpose). I already had plans to create a rule-based system for
 the
moko myself (an adaptation of a prolog-like inference system that I already
 have
under construction). Due to the memory and processing constraints on the moko
and the desire to reuse code whenever possible (which I agree with
wholeheartedly), I think going with Prolog is probably a better choice than
trying to finish my hacked-together and unproven inference engine.

Now if only my Freerunner would arrive... dunno why it's been delayed by a

I agree with Alexey as well, the danger is to create something so
configurable, that at the end your setting become a python script.

My idea for the moment is like this :
You can define a set of condition to specify the profile. For example :
if at my girl friend house, profile = Paranoid

Then you the application configurations can depend on the profile. e.g :
If profile is Paranoid, girl_friend_number_2.block_calls = True

This way, the profile is the link between the conditions set and the
actions set. The number of profiles is not supposed to be too large.

It is more restrictive that Russel idea, because you can't say :
if time = 600, then play alarm.

The only way to do so would be :
if time = 600, then profile = RunAlarm
if profile is RunAlarm, then alarm.run = True

Which is not really useful, you don't want to create one profile for
every events combination you can think of.

I can see several cases where this way of doing is not the best, but I
still think it is the most suitable for most practical cases.

 -charlie

Profiles, recipes, rulesets; I think we all talking about the same
thing, behaviours.
It boils down to detecting a set of conditions and instructing the phone
to behaviour in a certain way.

Profiles are an excellent way of describing a group of common phone
settings. (settings the call handling services already respect)
People are familiar with the concept, they could be described by setting
a phone using normal method and saving them.
Perhaps if there was a default profile, and we only store differences,
the delta, in other profiles, we could have cumulative profiles.
That might help with the tedium of setting up every permutation and keep
the number of profile down.

Profiles are really just a bunch of SET actions.
I still see the need for an event broker of sorts, something that will
detect conditions and trigger actions.
Perhaps the profile switcher (as some else mentioned) could be enhanced
for that purpose.
An alarm might just be a custom action, just another action. 'Run a
shell command' might be the only action we need.

Another poster mentioned interacting with his MythTV, one approach might
be to configure the MythTV to run web server with some cgi.
The phone would just use http to instigate commands. wget?

If we had profiles and an event broker, all we need next is some
standard way to describe the set of conditions.
I'm no hardcore coder, but it seem well within the realms of possibilities.

I still favour a scriptable solution, even is it wrapped in UI and
machine generated.

Matt

Re: Rules based policy engine

2008-07-18 Thread matt joyce

However, I would've thought that if every application can generate and
consume 'events', then all that is needed in your policy app is the
ability to look for combinations of events (and/or states?) and generate
new events that other apps can pick up? Is that what you were thinking.

Yes.

This has the downside that all of the 'intelligence' is in an external
script/rules engine and not in the apps. That might be an 'upside'.
Alternatively, each 'rule' could be it's own script which waits on
certain events and then fires out new events that are picked up by the
 other applications to do things.

As I see it the trouble with each rule being an isolated process, or
script, is that conflict detection might become a bit of a headache.

 Love the idea, though.

 Cheers
 Alex.

I think that whoever maintains the wiki should have a very firm grasp

Rules based policy engine

2008-07-17 Thread matt joyce
I have always wanted many more features on my phone, than any phone I've
owned has provided.
I expect the majority of people who are excited about Openmoko have
similar day dreams.

I'd like to propose a rule based policy engine.
In essence this would be an event based system, a service that other
services could refer to, to influence their behaviour.

These devices are inherently personal, just as other computing devices
are, so it reasonable to expect everyone will have slightly different
requirements.
The problem with a great many people wanting specific features, or
personal requirements, is that some will be realised and some will not.
Some requirements might be very similar, but not quite right, and some
features may compete unproductively, clash.

By creating a rule based policy engine, I think it would be possible to
give the user the ability to describe the way their phone should work,
for them, without each feature being developed for them.

Here are some examples of how I would like use this concept to make my
phone more personal, and how I would like to teach my phone to be smart.

If it can be reliably established that my physical location is one of
my favourite restaurants please switch my phone to vibrate, unless my
babysitter calls.
If I miss a call or I receive an SMS from from any of my work
contacts during work hours, and I don't respond, please remind me.
If it's not during work hours, do not take any calls from contacts
exclusively in my work contacts.
If my home wifi is available and my battery is not too low, don't use
GPRS for data.
If it a WEEKDAY and 06:00, turn on, play alarm, connect to WIFI and
start getting email and rss.
At 21:00 on weekdays, switch to standby.
If my battery is low and I'm at home, remind me to charge.
If I'm at home disable my auto-lock.

Some rules would be permanent, some would be one off
If John's phone is detected via bluetooth, please let me know (I need
to see him, when he comes in.)
Do not disturb until 13:00 (I need to get some work done)
No calls until this contact calls me (I'm expecting an urgent call)
Loud volume for the next hour (It's noisy here)
   Silent for an hour (meeting)

Some events might be :
- In/out calls, sms, emails
- Arriving/departing somewhere
- Enter/leave a time period
- Discovery/loss of a bluetooth device (infer person is nearby/left)
- Discovery/loss of a WIFI

Similarly ,states which could be queried might be :
- Call in progress
- Location is within a defines area
- Time is in a period
- Battery is low
- USB is connected

Some definitions
- Groups of contacts
- Lists of GPS co-ords
- time periods

Some actions
- Answer/Don't answer call
- Set volume profile
- switch on/off
- start/stop an application
- manipulate hardware

It would be quite similar to rule based filters many email systems use
(outlook, thunderbird, gmail, procmail), or firewalls for that matter.
Who knows, perhaps it could learn and suggest rules based on behaviour.

I'm sure creative people can explore and extend this idea.
Does anyone think this has merit, is achievable and worth pursuing?

Regards

Matt

Yes, this is precisely what I want, although it need not be overly complex.
Thunderbird's filter system is easy enough, MokoRules would be more complex,
but the process can be broken down into small steps.
http://opensourcearticles.com/nidelven/website/articles/thunderbird_15/english/part_07_images/1126606659X51

I've always thought Outlook's rules wizard was pretty good.
http://pubs.logicalexpressions.com/pub0009/LPMArticle.asp?ID=415

I'm frequently impressed by non-technical staff at work, who write rules to
make their outlook work for them.

Moreover, if one *is* a programmer, and has learned the rule expression
language, there will be bugs in the rulesets, like overlooked priorities
or excessively permissive conditions, and you'll spend some time debugging
it, probably missing a few important calls and alarms now and then in the
process. Next step would be debugging tools for rulesets, allowing to
simulate times of day, different conditions and incoming events to test
the rules. Next, backup and revision control for rulesets. This is where
madness lies: you have to modify and debug a program in a declarative
logic language when you start dating someone because it breaks all your
 carefully polished ruleset.

Agreed. This is about granularity, and the examples I gave were off the
cuff and may well be unworkable in RL.
Sanity check can be developed too, and packaged in groups to meet the needs
for Novice, Competent, Pro.
Freedom to make mistakes.

Sounds like a topic for XKCD. Randall, are you
 by any chance reading this?

I know what you mean.

I understand that you must be thinking, This phone is fully programmable,
so I can make it do whatever I want. True. Now, by defining sets of
possible conditions and actions and letting the user make rules out of
these, you're basically saying: Here is a computer. You can program it to
do whatever you want. While this might be usable for someone who is a
programmer (and who's willing to be a programmer when they deal with their
cell phone), it's not a killer application. It's an absence of
application; it's rather an interpreter for a programming language in
which a user can write themself a killer application.

Yes, that's what I want, I'd be happy with text config files to start with.
Even an offline webapp to make/test the rules, is not disagreeable to me.
People could publish their recipes, rulesets.

The key to making a phone do what you, I or someone else wants is rather
in analyzing our requirements and figuring out what parts are constant and
what are changing. Of course, all people want different things, and the
same person wants different things at different times. But the number of
dimensions in the space of all reasonable people's demands is still much
less than that of the space of all possible rulesets. Only a small subset
of all possible rules, let alone rulesets, makes any sense at all, while
the vast majority is nonsensical, such as When WiFi is available and
John's phone is nearby, mute all calls, or If I have unread SMS on
Thursday, prefer GPRS. Analyzing and isolating the axes of user demands
is much harder than developing a ruleset-driven engine, but at least it
has a chance of becoming usable.

This reminds me of a Richard Dawkins quote, speaking about the search space
of DNA, But, however many ways there may be of being alive, it is certain
that there are vastly more ways of being dead, or rather not alive.

I think what your saying is that the more variables there are, the more
possibilities of non-useful, or counter productive rules there will be.
If you are, then I

A summary of everything related to the GPS problem.

Does the people of Openmoko know the problem?
  - Yes.

Do they work on the problem?
  - Yes, they are actively searching for a solution.

 What is the problem?
  - The Openmoko Freerunner have a long TTFF with the SD card in the phone.
So it takes a long time (10min+) before you get your first GPS data.

 Wat is TTFF?
  - This is the time to first fix of the GPS. This is the time the GPS has
needed to get the first clue on where you are on planet earth. So you have
to do this only once. After you have a FF (first fix), you can get more
fixes without any problems with the SD card in the phone.

So if we have a first fix, the SD card isn't blocking the GPS anymore?
  - yes, the SD card isn't blocking the GPS if we have a first fix. (Some
people even claim it's more stable)

 Does they have a solution?
  - yes. Their is already a highly alpha software workaround. The software
just disables the SD card when the GPS tries to get it's first fix They are
 also examine a hardware solution.

Do we have to return our Freerunners to Openmoko?
  - Probably not, because the software workaround should work too.

But we can't read of the SD card when the GPS is on?
  - Wrong, you will be able to read the SD card when the GPS is on. You will
probably not be able to read the SD card when you're starting the GPS (appr.
30 sec), because the GPS will only block the SD card when it's searching
it's first fix. After that you will be able to read the SD card again.

Is their a better software solution?
  - Maybe. From reading the mailing list, I have understood that half the
Openmoko team is looking into this bug. All this information is only 1 à 2
days old and the bug is also young, so I suspect they can finetune the
software workaround and make it only slowdown the SD card or even better.

Did Openmoko test the GPS with a SD card in it?
  - yes

Whey didn't they find it while testing the Freerunner?
  - Because they have to do the tests with a fake GPS signal and with that
signal it worked. (In a fab you haven't a decent GPS signal) They already
have modified the test, so it correspond the GPS signal better.

 Summary of the summary:
You will be able to use the SD card in the same time of the GPS except for
the first appr 30 seconds. (And that's the worst case, because maybe
 Openmoko can find better hacks/fixes)

ps: I have read all the mails about the GPS problem, but I'm still human. If
there is a fault or wrong conclusion in this summary, please let the
 community know.

Community help to make these more approachable is something that would

My take on the problem is that if a new user searches for information, and
finds something promising but it turns out to be wrong, or out of date, they
will probably not update it.
Once they find the information they may not remember (or be inclined) to go
back and update it.

What new user is going to start off by editing an article about stuff they
don't know?

Perhaps one method of identifying information, it to have a simple way to
flagging an article as 'needs checking'.
Wiki moderators and the community at large could focus their efforts there.

Re: Reason for GPS problems found!

2008-07-15 Thread Matt Joyce
Firstly I don't have much of an issue with the way things have been handled
so far.
In fact the closeness of the users, the community, the developers, the
engineers and management, just strengthen my resolve that Open Source phones
are the way to go. (I'm finding the resolution process fascinating. Really
quite thrilling.)

With regards to disseminating official information such as the various
useful posts from Joerg and friends, I think posting to an official Openmoko
blog would be better, and then posting links to the blogs on the lists.

As good as lists are, the noise/signal (no pun, or irony intended) can hide
the quality information.

For something as evocative as this GPS/SD issue, I'd like to see at *least*
daily updates posted to an official website or blog (not wiki).
Even if those updates just say, Still working on this problem, next update
in 24 hours..

Bravo so far, fingers crossed for an acceptable fix.

Aware of it? You must be kidding.
Pretty much everybody at Openmoko, including Sean our beloved leader,
reads the mailing lists. All mailing lists.
Then we have internal mailing lists, and if you could see what's going
on there right now, rest assured there are 5-10 people working on
tracking down the GPS bug, and other bugs, right now.
Software fixes, hardware fixes. Shipped units, units currently in
production, future production runs. All require different approaches
and all of this is being addressed.
The idea that the GPS problems might be related to SD card presence
was a fantastic idea, and coming from our community!

After the gta02 release dust settles, I will take another look at how
we can make our internal communication more public. It's all too easy
that good things are going on and people don't know about.
Expect to see more in the coming days.

This leads me to believe it's Brenda's full-time job (as in,

certainly would value her insights and opinions. We certainly aren't
trying to muscle in on her territory, but just willing to lend a hand to

 information.

Secondly, Michael can you coordinate with whoever is in charge of the

One of my own agenda points as a wiki editor is to get an
offline-capable version of the wiki available for download to install on
the SD card -- perhaps we could even build it up as an opkg
documentation bundle or something. That'd be slick, with opkg update
opkg upgrade being able to upgrade the documentation on the phone.

Wiki editors, do you have a request for the list name? How about

Since openmoko is already in the domain name, perhaps just

It's just initialisation data. More accurate will probably be better, but
 20km

 which hemisphere you're in.

Actually it think just knowing which country your in will make a big
difference allready. We could consider devising a list of country/location
data, assuming we can get country information from the GSM network (or the
SIM card perhaps?). Just adding this to the GPS initialisation might allready
reduce the time needed to get a fix hugely.

Fwd: [ ~102731 ] voice driver

2008-06-19 Thread Matt Flax
HI there,

Just letting you all know that it seems the idea of using a pci express
voice modem with the openmoko software will be limited by the manufacturers.
They appear to not be interested in supporting communities of users but
rather individual business clients ...

I quote them : openmoko.org can contact us directly if they wish to
work with us.

OK - so in short you have no interest in supporting Linux voice ...

no problem, I find that attitude rather limiting and lazy ... as you
know Linux is pretty uniform ... you could also provide a complete
kernel driver for open source developers ... whether it uses the ALSA
audio drivers or a custom IOCTL mechanism ... doesn't really matter
and doesn't really require you to interact with each manufacturer ...

thanks

 1) If I purchase one of these devices, do I acquire the necessary
documentation for me to code the voice driver alone ??? Surely you
would like me to use the full capacity of the voice modem !

---We do not work with end users on minicard integration, only with laptop

solution, so there is no generic solution or firmware or drivers.
There is no Linux driver with voice support and there is no ETA on it.

Anyway, you can contact one of our distributors below and try to purchase
a modem. The support will be provided by them.

 2) openmoko.org is both a hardware and a software ... they are both also
open source ... I bet that doesn't fit with your current model of
 'manufacturers' ...
openmoko.org can contact us directly if they wish to work with us.

 3) If you don't fit this new model ... you will run into problems ...
look at the ASUS EEE PC ... it runs Linux ... It has a spare PCI
 express slot ...

--- I've checked the spec on ASUS EEE PC and i dont see a spare PCI-mini
Express
slot which you need to insert a minicard.
look at the KB article below. We have developed and tested the driver for
ASUS EEE PC ( USB cards) . The ASUS can contact us directly if they want to
discuss more options.

openmoko and pci express voice modems

2008-06-17 Thread Matt Flax
Hello,

I would like to know whether it is possible to plug a pci express voice
modem into a laptop and then use openmoko to make mobile calls from the
laptop ?

An example pci express card is the MC8775v :

Is anyone using this or another similar device to make calls from their
laptop ?

2008-06-17 Thread Matt Flax
I see,

What I am really trying to do is to have as close to an all in one
convergence as possible.
So take a small EEEPC like laptop, put the voice modem into it and there you
have it ... phone, music player, video player, upgradeable memory, a mini
computer with full QWERTY keys and so on ...

Is it perhaps simpler to connect an openmoko device to a mini laptop ? Is it
possible to route openmoko device audio through a laptop?

thanks

It ought to be possible, though probably not out of the box. It seems like
 an
odd thing to do, but I'm sure you have a reason.

You could run asterisk on the laptop and use it to route calls between the
modem in the laptop and a SIP or IAX client running on the openmoko with a
USB or WiFi network connection. This ought to be fairly easy to set up,
assuming the card exposes its audio interfaces.

One or more of the network capable audio daemons could probably make the
openmoko appear as an audio interface on the laptop, so probably usable
 with
 the modem.

You could try to get the openmoko to behave as a Bluetooth headset or
handsfree kit, but I'm not certain there's any software available to
implement this yet. This also assumes that the laptop can connect the card
 to
 the bluetooth audio device.

I have begun enquiries with one of the manufacturers they mention they
already have Linux drivers, but didn't seem to know what I/O routines they
already provide

I assume that if it needs hacking, then it would simply need control and
voice hacking ... control hacks to start stop and do other functions to dial
voice hacking to copy PCM buffers to/from openmoko and the device ...
is that correct ?

It is possible that this device also has GPS ... perhaps that also needs
addressing during the hacking ?

[...pondering how you could make calls from a Neo through a laptop]

I figured he meant running the OM software on the lappie to operate the
 voice modem as a phone.

Which should be doable with some hacking to accommodate possible
differences between the pci express card and the chip arrangement of a
Neo. Majorly, would the card present itself as an audio interface or
transfer PCM on the serial interface?

As currently the OM dialer is Qtopia, the question becomes if it has
support for the required I/O strategy or would one have to hack it (I
 don't know).

How come that is an issue? (warning: wild speculation) Does the GTA03

Re: using the openmoko neo101 in mass storage mode

2008-05-30 Thread Matt Mets
I believe this has been discussed at some point, but there is a
file-storage module that emulates a mass storage device:

http://www.linux-usb.org/gadget/file_storage.html

I don't see it included in the preview ASU package, but it should be
trivial to build separately.

The issue (that I see, anyway) is that it requires exclusive access to
the drive that it uses for the storage. I think the cleanest way to
handle that would be to format a partition on the SD card with a
suitable filesystem (Fat32). This would then be normally be mounted on
the Neo, and used for storing media files and extra user data. When you
want to connect to the PC to transfer songs or whatever, you run a
utility that unmounts the drive from the linux side, switches off the
USB ethernet gadget and switches on the file-storage gadget, with this
device as its target. Then you can plug it into a PC and do whatever,
and when you are done you simply use the utility to switch back to the
previous configuration.

The downside to this method is that you wouldn't get access to the root
filesystem, and Neo applications woudn't have access to the drive while
it was being shared (so you couldn't play songs while you were
downloading them). Also, it would probably be tricky to share PIM data
this way, because you wouldn't want to turn off the dialer program :-D.

Cheers,
Matt

I'm sure it's *possible* to make the neo behave like a mass

software that does it so I can have some kind of communication

have permission to install drivers internet bridges on. As
far as I know that software doesn't exist today.

Two ways to accomplish this:

1. use gadget_storage on the neo/freerunner
2. use usb-networking + samba on the neo/freerunner

My vote goes for option #2, since this also allows us to continue
to support ssh'ing to the phone, etc.

My issue is that I want to be able to connect my neo to just about any
Windows PC and at least transfer
files. Connecting to the neo via usb from a Windows machine requires
installing a driver on the Windows
PC and setting up a network bridge on the Windows PC. These are
things I'm often unable to do. (E.g.

at work, or especially on someone else's machine at work.)

Bluetooth is nice, but it's also true that many PCs don't have
bluetooth. To me, the ideal solution would
be to have an app on the neo that makes it pretend to be a mass
storage device over USB, so standard
USB connectors on almost any USB host (Mac, Windows PC, Linux PC,
maybe some cameras, etc.)
would recognize the neo as a source and destination for files. We
should be able to configure which
directories are exposed through the USB mass storage interface, and
also perhaps configure how

much storage is reserved (so you don't fill up your rootfs).

Does such a USB mass storage interface simulation program exist out
there as open source

somewhere, waiting to be ported?

The keyboard seems quite nice, and worked well with a stylus (better
than the video might suggest, I was working around the camera).

What about the finger usability?
AFAIK the Qtopia predictive keyboard has been projected also to help in
finger usability...

I wasn't able to use the keyboard with my finger. Once a letter is pressed,
you can't slide to a neighboring letter to change it, so it was difficult to
correct mistakes. There was a different keyboard on the original Qtopia
builds that had a magnifying-key feature that seemed to make this easier. It
is entirely possible that I missed something here though. I do like the
gesture support (slide left to backspace, forward to insert space, down for
enter, up to switch keyboards), but I would like to see something that
indicates that gestures are being performed (perhaps a line that shows a
trail of where your finger has been?).

to correct - just backspace! :) (left slide). the magnifying thing is possible
- but somehow i saw it as superfluous as chances are u press and release very
fast like a keypress on a normal keyboard and then notice the mistake. even so
- the dictionary lookup will be correcting if it's in the dictionary and not
too far of a typo (press too far away from intended key). admittedly the
dictionary we ship has only 5000 words - but hey. it's a simple text file. :)

Ok, keeping that in mind, pressing in the general area and using the
word lookup feature seems to work pretty well with a finger. At least i
have been able to put in some simple phrases quite easily.

The predictive keyboard bit might help but I haven't become proficient with
it yet. It seemed weird that it shows two lists of possible words (one
horizontal across the top of the keyboard, one in a dropdown box).

horizontal is for quick selecting the most likely matches for correction (or if
no matches - exactly what you typed), and if it doesn't fit u can access ALL
matches from the popup list.

One other thing I noticed was that the widget for the popup window
covers up the leftmost horizontal match or two, making it impossible to
select them.

Also, when running a regular X application (remote xterm), it seemed like I
had to press enter (or tab) to get the characters to be sent to the app,
which made it very difficult to enter things into the terminal. But
usability in actual phone-apps is probably more important :-D. Perhaps a
direct-input mode is/could be implemented for that sort of application.

it's possible we can do this - in svn there is even a full qwerty kbd layout i
initially used - with ctrl, alt, etc. for terminal junkies, BUT for now
correction is always-on.

Here is a funny idea: how about replacing the word lookup with
bash-style command completion when in the terminal? That could be
really cool! Maybe the word lookup feature already has an interface
that can be hooked into. I could see it being useful for auto-completing
really any application-specific data as well. :-D For example, maybe in
the dialer program to show your closest contacts that match the number
(one of my favorite features of the GTK-dialer).

The whole interface was very smooth though. I'm suddenly much more
optimistic about the project!

RE: Neo as cellular modem?

It should be no problem.  You just have to set up your routing tables correctly
so that the desktop knows to route its traffic to the device, and the device

It might also be cool to have the Freerunner act as a wireless router!  Instant
