Re: [CGUYS] Building Your Own TIVO
I think this topic is wandering now and I'm getting confused with several different people talking about different systems.? Anyway, if you've been watching the news from CES, it looks like several manufacturers are showing wireless HDMI, and I don't think any of it requires gigabit. But details are sparse. I swear I read a story yesterday about HDMI over 802G, but I can't find it right now. Having one main TV would really simplify life around here. But between the office, the living room, and the bedroom, I could really use a way to move material around. Maybe just by DVD. My HD5000 card was the only item on which I overspent. I paid $100 new online for it and could have paid half that on eBay. If I were to set up a gigabit network in my house I could stream the video to anywhere. The gigabit is a must for the HiDef stuff. As it is I just watch TV on my one TV and am quite content with that. * == QUICK LIST-COMMAND REFERENCE - Put the following commands in == * == the body of an email send 'em to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] == * Join the list: SUBSCRIBE COMPUTERGUYS-L Your Name * Too much mail? Re: [CGUYS] USB Audio Interface
Behringer has a very checkered reputation in the pro audio world ( see these for just the tip of the iceberg : http://groups.google.com/group/alt.music.4-track/msg/9704c7a572f3d6a0?q=behringer+lawsuitstart=10hl=enlr=safe=offrnum=12 ). One of the more laughable instances of product piracy was when a Behringer product was so perfect a copy of another product that their circuit board had the original manufacturers logo still etched on the surface. Plenty of their products work as advertised apparently but I wouldn't spend more than pocket change to find out. YMMV in reply to ... Re: [CGUYS] Upgrade the video card?
I don't have your answer but I will ask this before the others do, what are the details? Operating system, type monitor, current amount of memory, what you are trying to run or do that's so slow, what other programs are running all the time such as antivirus and firewall... If you aren't sure what's slowing the computer down, use ProcessExplorer, a great free tool by SysInternals, which runs in the background and lets you know at a glance how the system is doing. I use Spy Sweeper also, in conjunction with AVG antivirus and ZoneAlarm firewall, and while SS does impact my slower computers but it works great on my new one which has 2GB memory. After its initial startup which takes about 20 seconds, I can't even tell it's running based on performance slowdowns. However on my old Win 98, it is a bear to run. If I could afford it, I would max out the memory on the 98 too but it would be a waste of money. In the meantime, I will keep Spy Sweeper because of its interactive protections. For me, it's worth a slower boot time to not have to deal with the headache of reinstalling my operating system when it gets compromised. Richard P. Quentin Fisher wrote: A delayed update. Wonder of wonders -- the software showed up today in the mail. This is more than a month after purchase, and three weeks after eBay closed the store. The seller didn't accept Paypal, but only personal checks, cashier's checks, and direct wire transfer. To be safe, before sending money I emailed the request for payment from the seller to spoof at eBay, and they verified that it was legitimate. Then I sent a cashier's check. Today I received a message from eBay saying that the store has been removed from eBay. The 100% positive rating has dropped to 68%. Time hasn't run out yet on expectation of receiving the software, but is there any way to recoup my loss in case I never see the software? * == QUICK LIST-COMMAND REFERENCE - Put the following commands in == * == the body of an email send 'em to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] == * Join the list: SUBSCRIBE COMPUTERGUYS-L Your Name * Too much mail? Re: [CGUYS] possible eBay scam: what to do?
Praise Allah and pass the wine. let it be a lesson to you. However It is very possible you might get contacted later by one of the governmental agencies or ebay about the scam they were running. I bought (years ago) Office 97 CD's off of Ebay. Sometime later I was contacted by Ebay about an investigation they were running into this seller, as he had registered with many user names on Ebay and had run scams on all the names he used. I still think there should be a way for Ebay to vet sellers somehow to prevent some of this. Stewart At 04:52 PM 1/7/2008, you wrote: Wonder of wonders -- the software showed up today in the mail. Re: [CGUYS] Voting Perfection
Tom Piwowar Great long article in the NY Times... Can You Count on Voting Machines? snip I saw an article ... somewhere ... about a proposal to make vote verification much simpler. After voting, you would be given a copy of a randomly selected ballot that wasn't yours. The ballot would have a serial number, the serial numbers wouldn't match to names, they would match to the ballot, that is the list of ballots and how each one voted would be preserved. If 10% of the people would check how the ballot they had verified with the reported vote, the safety of the ballot would be assured. I'm not a mathematician but it does sound simple.
