Re: [CGUYS] Your removal from the COMPUTERGUYS-L list
Gmail is free and has a great spam filter. For things like this list it is perfect. You can keep your own archive and it threads conversations fairly well- as long as the titles don't get changed. I'll say what I've said before: email is no longer a reliable form of communication. If every company published a SPF record and checked incoming mail against published SPF records, spam wouldn't be the problem that it is. Sadly, not enough do this to make a significant difference. These sales numbers are always somewhat skewed by what they include and what they leave out. In this case, the numbers don't include online sales. Both Apple and Dell make many sales from their web sites. That said, this is still a huge change in sales and accurately reflects Apple gaining market share, and gaining rapidly. Depends... what's a gourmet pie? That almost sounds like something made with sweatbreads. If that's the case, then you can keep all the gourmet pie for yourself. :-) Mind you, I normally like to avoid these which is better - mac or PC wars. Each system has its own good points and not so good points. Market share can be a good indicator but it, like most data, can easily be misconstrued if you don't look at what's really behind it (to think I'm finally using my degree in marketing!) :-) Check this out from Slashdot.org: apple.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=08/05/20/0146218from=rss ...Fortune picked up this report and pointed out (apple20.blogs.fortune.cnn.com/2008/05/19/report-apples-market-share-of- pcs-over-1000-hits-66/? or tinyurl.com/6d7a4g) the somewhat obvious fact that the $1,000 PC segment is Apple's by default, since Dell, HP, and Lenovo sell the bulk of their machines in the $500-$750 range, and Apple has only one model selling for less than $1,000. As the analyst said, It doesn't hurt Apple that once you're in its store, you can't buy any computer with a screen for less than a grand. If you don't give people a choice people will spend more. I use Firefox for almost everything, except my favorite weather source Wunderground, which I view on Camino, and as I mentioned, I almost never open a pdf in Firefox. The only problem I routinely have with Firefox that bothers me is that YouTube type video players disappear from the window. This might be slightly off-topic, but it is about computer graphics and websites. Does anyone know of any good sites where free or inexpensive images can be had? I know about iStockphoto.com, and have gotten photo images there in the past. But there have to be other sites out there with good stuff that's free or relatively cheap, and royalty-free. (Specifically, I need a photo of a 12th-century sword for a publicity piece for a friend who wrote a book about the Templars. Now you're nitpicking. So what if they quit for awhile. Isn't IBM where MS basically got it's start? Don't get me wrong. I'm one of those Apple fan boys. Re: [CGUYS] Fool MLS: Make Safari look like IE on Windows?
Thanks Michael, I will not be able to try using this for a while (although I've set it up), as it's for when my GF uses my computer, and she will not be doing this for a while. I hope it works, and I can show her that she can use a Mac for her work! Is there a way to fool MLS, and make Safari on a Mac look like IE on Windows? Thanks, Alvin - Go to Preferences. - Click to show the Advanced panel. - At bottom, check the Show Develop menu in menu bar option. - Close the panel and go to the new Develop menubar selection. Under that will be a place to select User Agent. Choose the IE version you wish to try and see if it works. -- Michael Lewis Off Balance Productions [EMAIL PROTECTED] www.offbalance.com * ** List info, subscription management, list rules, archives, privacy ** ** policy, calmness, a member map, and more at http:// www.cguys.org/ ** * * ** List info, subscription management, list rules, archives, privacy ** ** policy, calmness, a member map, and more at http://www.cguys.org/ ** *
Re: [CGUYS] OMG! Apple US Market Share for Premium PCs Hits 6
I think his point is that Apple is one of the few left that hasn't been bought or sold. Compaq moved to HP, IBM to lenova...etc. On Thu, May 22, 2008 at 12:08 PM, Jeff Miles [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Now you're nitpicking. So what if they quit for awhile. Isn't IBM where MS basically got it's start? Don't get me wrong. I'm one of those Apple fan boys. But still, there have been other companies around for quite awhile. When did Compaq get started? And is Radio Shack still making their own, just labeling them different? I don't know. I try and stay away from Radio Shack after looking for a cable splitter and the only one they had was over $12. I found one at Walmart for 98 cents. Jeff M On May 22, 2008, at 11:28 AM, Snyder, Mark (IT Civ) wrote: IBM left the PC market (more than once). Re: [CGUYS] FW: Your removal from the COMPUTERGUYS-L list
There are a number of wizards you can use, but I just asked my ISP to publish it for me, since they handle our DNS as well. http://www.openspf.org/ http://old.openspf.org/wizard.html http://www.microsoft.com/mscorp/safety/content/technologies/senderid/wizard/ -Original Message- What are the details on publishing a SPF record? Re: [CGUYS] FW: Your removal from the COMPUTERGUYS-L list
-Original Message- I used to be buried in spam because I get all the misdirected mail sent to my company's domain. I now route all of that to GMail and it passes the ham on to me. Now I only get a couple of spams a day. So I would say that GMail is especially good at spam filtering. Yes, but without a good mechanism to report false positives, the best spam filter in the world isn't very good. The only way to do this on Gmail is to plow through the Spam folder. I get hundreds of spam every day at my gmail.com address. It's better when you have periodic reports that you can check, rather than check the messages themselves. For instance, I use XWall at my job (http://www.xwall.net/), which has a partner product called ESATInformer, which generates spam reports that are emailed to the recipients. You can see a screenshot here: http://www.esatinformer.com/Details/esat%20user%20report%20july31.htm Each spam is weighted by the number of filters that catch it, that's the number at the far left. I don't even bother with anything over 3 filters. It takes me only seconds to scan a report. I click on the 'R' icon, which generates a retrieve command, and the ham message is sent to me. Does anyone have experience with Postini (now owned by Google)? You do. That's what Google is using to filter for Gmail. * ** List info, subscription management, list rules, archives, privacy ** ** policy, calmness, a member map, and more at http://www.cguys.org/ ** *

Re: [CGUYS] Driver Agent?
While Driver Agent (http://driveragent.com), reports that drivers are outdated, in order to see what they recommend, you have to join for $30, so I can't compare. I was able to find one update for the display adapter but it looks like it addresses gaming issues which doesn't concern me at this time. In the meantime, everything is working properly so I'll pass on Driver Agent for now. Thanks for the advice. Richard P. John wrote: Has anyone used Driver Agent? I tried it and it reports that 7 drivers (21%), are not up to date. But when I go through the individual driver's property field to update them, they show that they are current. I don't know about Driver Agent. But going through the Properties to update a driver has never worked reliably. It doesn't mean anything if it doesn't find something newer. Google for the specific drivers, go to the manufacturer's web site, and compare those answers to what Driver Agent tells you. * ** List info, subscription management, list rules, archives, privacy ** ** policy, calmness, a member map, and more at http://www.cguys.org/ ** *
