There are more podcast feeds than I can keep up with. Some of the best are from NPR, CBC, BBC, and some local stations. iTunes keeps filling up with more and more good stuff. I especially like APM's Future Tense. It reminded me of an incident my brother had years ago while working for a major company. My brothers is the IT Manager for a division of a major travel property management company. He manages the local office and is in charge of the equipment and such plus does data work. A network guy came in from the headquarters building and started to work on their equipment. He refused (I am putting it mildly) to tell my brother what he was doing plus started pass wording everything. Well to make a long story short, my brother asked him to leave and promptly made noise up the chain. Apparently someone upstairs listened to my brother and no negative things happened to him over the incident. But it sounds eerily similar. The problem is no one questioned nor supervised this gentleman and when they realized what they had done, they tried to close the barn door after the herd had escaped. Plus they seem to be acting real stupid now that they have discovered the barn door was really closed and they did not realize it. Their prosecution of him seems to be akin to using a 155 mm howitzer to go after a mosquito. I come late to this discussion and am not sure of the beginning but when power supplies start to fail sometimes they don't have enough oomph to power up what they previously could so after attempting to spin things up, they (the motherboard) reverts to a showing single blinking green or yellow light on the case front. If the computer is looping around in this case, it may be that the bios is set to restart upon failure. Good point. It could also be the mobo's power management and fixing that usually requires clearing its PRAM. It is hard to say even with careful first-hand observation, which is impossible via email. So the best approach is to be systematic. Going out of order means extra work, extra expense, and makes it harder to collect information. It all depends. In the latest release of Eudora actually done by Eudora, they turn into icons. The Icons actually let you know there is something else there. The problem is that often there just isn't enough context to realize that the person is trying to be humorous/ironic/sarcastic. In traditional print, you'd have lots and lots of written words to realize this. In realspace, you can judge the body language of the person making the statement. In brief email exchanges, sometimes you need substitutes for those cues - and thats the purpose of the smiley. I don't think the assumption is that the person won't get the joke... its to make sure that people realize it _is_ a joke. Depends on whether you're smiling as you type it. We *have* to encourage people in our forums to use smileys liberally. Being community forums, many of them are new to computers and don't understand that the sarcasm they've used their whole life just won't work the same way online because nobody can see that you're smiling as you say it. This week we have Serious and XM merging because the market for their services was not as large as they expected. When they first arrived on the scene I said (on air) that I wouldn't invest any $ there. The iPod was going to make a big dent in their customer base. Now we have the the iPod Touch and the iPhones able to provide a mobile connection to the 'net. This is a delivery method that nobody was anticipating. It could change the whole ball game not just for satellite broadcasters, but for conventional broadcasters too. Yes and no. Where I think the Satellite radios have it over Internet radio is sports. The way sports events are licensed you will not find them on conventional internet radio. I am a big Nascar fan and would like one of the satellite radios to catch races when in the car. (There is no station that has bought into the radio broadcasts locally) Plus there are a few other venues which I do not listen too to make a difference. NPR has a good presence on satellite radio also. However again down here coverage is spotty. Yes that is where an Internet radio again can offer good alternative but it depends on coverage once more. There is too little coverage in some parts of the country for it to be a killer, instead it just dies because of lack of support. However satellite because of its universal coverage is a big plus. So for you on the east coast and in the city it might be the radio killer, but for us in the rest of the US satellite will still win hands down. Will the iPhone kill radio? Not for awhile yet--for lots of reasons. You can get a really groovy short-wave set that will fit in a purse or the small zipper compartment of a knapsack for around $20. There's no subscription charge, and the reception is pretty good. It runs on batteries that I get in CVS or Giant, and it will also use rechargables. Until you can get an iPhone (or equivalent) for $20, and until satellite radio is free, and until computer batteries are cheap and recharge in 5 minutes, I'm not worried that over-the-air radio is going to disappear. With radio, you don't have as many choices as you would with satellite or internet radio, but then lots of people have limited choices (and limited budgets). What I can get on my mini-shortwave set around town beats anything we had when I was growing up. (What I would really like, a station that plays early music 24/7, isn't available anywhere anyway.) I might buy an iPhone-type device some day, because I love cool gadgets. But for now: Should I pay hundreds of dollars to get an iPhone, and switch phone services to a service that doesn't work very well in this area (and that will lock me into a two-year contract), just so I can listen to RADIO? I don't think so. There are more podcast feeds than I can keep up with. Some of the best are from NPR, CBC, BBC, and some local stations. iTunes keeps filling up with more and more good stuff. I especially like APM's Future Tense. These are short, 5-minute programs that often inform me of tech events that are important but not covered elsewhere, I have to ditto Tom here. I used to have every TV in the house on all day. Now there is just one on for 'noise' for my parrots. I have very few TV shows I bother to watch. Radio offers nothing unless I can get an occasional program off XM when in the car. But iTunes keeps me so busy with a multitude of informative and educational programs that I have a hard time choosing what to listen to first. I download dozens of podcasts every day and find myself looking for excuses to work at something that allows me to also listen to my mp3 player. Podcasting is the future of media. It will just take some time to get the masses educated as to how to access them. I can listen to my favorite NPR show and my Photoshop tutorials and Mike Malloy and Thom Hartmann shows when it's convenient for me and not have to be glued to a tv or radio at their chosen time.
