Oh brilliant idea Betty! Duh! I should have known the G5 tower could
hold 2 SATA drives but you say it can hold 3?

It's my friend's machine so I don't have it handy to poke around in.
It's this machine however:

http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/powermac_g5/stats/powermac_g5_dual_2.0.html

If they decide to upgrade to Leopard to use Time Machine, would the 1TB
Seagate or their 1.5 TB drive work with Time machine? (I saw some at
New Egg for $109 and $129 respectively, 5 year warranties)

Initially I think I remember Time Machine was picky about its hosts
drives but I heard that may have changed ?

Buy another internal drive or two--they're cheap, and the internal bus
is fast enough. Your G5 has room for at least 2 or 3 internal HDs [a
3rd can go on the bus with the optical drive, but you need a secure
place to attach it]. 160 GB isn't much if you use Photoshop and do
animation or video. I have around 300GB in my G4, plus two external FW
drives for backup.

How about "500GB Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 SATA II 7200RPM 32MB Cache
- 5yr Seagate Warranty for $71.99" or "1.0TB Seagate Barracuda 7200.11
SATA II 7200RPM 32MB W/ Perpendicular Drive Technology New w/5 Year
Seagate Warranty for $119.99" at OtherWorld, macsales.com.

Set browsers to delete cache files when you quit. Also use Yasu or
MacJanitor to delete temp, cache, log files. Repair permissions
before and after cleanup. Keep the PS scratch disk on an internal
drive. Move the iTunes library to another drive, or buy the new
internal drives. Don't partition your drives if you can avoid it.

A partition gets you nothing. Two partitions on the same drive are really
just the same drive. So it has to be an independent drive.

I would consider the group of FireWire drives to be roughly the
equivalent of one drive for this purpose. The bottleneck will be the
capacity of the FireWire cable. The bottleneck will not be as bad as for
partitions on the same drive, but not as good as independent drives.

Using the main drive for the app and one of the FireWire drives as
scratch will give you the independent data paths you seek.

[CGUYS] New iPhone, same contract? [was: $199 Macs and $99 iPhones]

2008-12-31 Thread b_s-wilk

i looked into the iphones for me and for my wife. we both in the
middle of very favorable ATT contracts (corporate negotiated
holdovers)that i do not think we can cancel and and reup. to get an
iPhone, we would have to either pay the full price, or buy out, and
re up at probably $10--20 a month more.

My son gave me two hand-me-up Christmas presents--his iPod Touch and his
S-E 580i mobile phone. He got a new iPhone. I wasn't sure if he could
switch phones so early in his contract [05/2008]. He went to the Apple
Store, not the AT&T store, late on the Sunday evening before Christmas.
The Apple Store handled switching contracts [no penalty], and the iPhone
was $199 as advertised. On Monday, he went to the AT&T store to get all
his data transferred directly from his old to his new phone. They also
gave him an unlock code for his old phone. Cavan is thrilled with his
iPhone. I'm thrilled with the Touch, but have a lot to learn about it.
S-E is nice, but I still like Nokia better, except, of course, the
price--free is good [free, plus $5000 toward his grad school loan].

Bottom line is this: Go to the Apple Store. They'll fix you up. There
is only one plan for the iPhone and it's not cheap, but includes
unlimited data. See how it compares to what you have, feature for
feature. Don't know if there's a shared plan for 2 iPhones.

Now, where can I get a USB cable for a Sony-Ericsson W580i phone? How
about an adapter for the speakers--S-E proprietary to stereo mini?
