Re: [CGUYS] LG Flatron W2053TX driver disc problem

2009-12-08 Thread Tony B
If it's not an odd interface like USB, then no driver is needed. Just
update your video card drivers, power down, plug in the DVI cable,
boot. Note that if you have another monitor connected then this one
may not display a picture on boot; you'll have to play with the
multi-monitor settings. It may also not display a picture if it's
plugged into the 'wrong' DVI connector. Long story; just try the other
one.

 have the model number wrong.

I see now, that it is not a USB.  But, I don't have the model wrong, because
it is on the front of the monitor and, it doesn't explain, why a driver is
 needed.

I found, even before being concerned about, why it has a drivers disc,
is to replace the disc. I found out, it somehow got warped.

So far, The monitor has been fine this morning. I did a bunch of

I don't have a second monitor handy, at the moment.

Yes you should drop all active spyware protections. You can always

Yes,

Uninstall Zone Alarm Pro completely. I think you are going to find that
was the problem.

Ever so often anybody's updates can and will break things and security
software has deeper hooks into your machine than any other besides the
OS itself.

If it solves the problem, contact ZA support and let them tell you how
to fix it. You might have to go back to the previous version and don't
do updates until they fix the problem.

[CGUYS] The reason for all the agita (Was: Re: [CGUYS] Speaking of 2.5 drives. . .)

2009-12-08 Thread Reid Katan

Quoting Tony B ton...@gmail.com:

Ultra ATA SATA. I'm telling you, you'll be making a big mistake to
rely on anything except your own eyes. In most laptops, it's only a 5
minute procedure to open it up and look at it - probably less time
than you've taken so far playing with software. And you're going to
have to do it eventually anyway to replace it.

That may be, but hey, look how long this thread has actually been
about gaspcomputers/gasp. (-:

Visually inspected, it is, in fact, an Hitachi SATA drive.

So anyway. . .

I seem to have picked up a strange problem on this Toshiba Satellite
(A105-S2712) concerning Firefox. I'm dual booting the original WinXP
and Win7. In both systems Firefox (or something related to it) seems
to be slowing my computer down.

When running XP, as soon as I start Firefox the computer slows down to
1/5 of normal speed. How do I know it's 1/5? Because the clock ticks
one time every five seconds. Consistently. It doesn't pause for a bit
then catch up, it just runs at 1/5 speed. The only way to recover from
it is to shut down.

In Windows 7, I can start Firefox and run it until I get to certain
pages that seem to have some kind of video in them (playing or not).
An example includes http://www.aopa.org/summit/live.cfm. The YouTube
home page will do it also, though not quite 1/5 speed (more like 1/3).
When I leave the offending page, the system goes back to normal speed
(although, several seconds behind). I can even leave Firefox running.

It's not just the clock that slows. It's everything. Cursor blinks,
window resizing, the spinning Avast ball in the Notification Area,
the Firefox throbber. Oddly enough, the offending video will play at
normal speed. Go figure.

CPU reports normal activity. Running currently at 35%, with Firefox
using 15%. Memory is about 685MB used, out of 2GB. With a non-running
video in one tab, web mail in another tab, and another window open to
compose this email.

Shut down, restart, go into BIOS (before it can reach out to set the
time from the Internet), and the clock is at the current time. So I
don't think it's a hardware issue.

How did I get into this mess? Dunno. Near as I can tell, it just
started happening. I updated the BIOS per Toshiba for the Win7 install.

Everything should be up to date. I've got Zone Alarm free and AVG free
running on XP. Been that way forever. I've got Avast and Windows
firewall and Defender running on Win7.

In XP, I uninstalled Firefox, ran Crap Cleaner, and deleted everything
I could find pertaining to Firefox (backed up my bookmarks and deleted
all profiles). Reinstalled Firefox. Made no difference.

So, I figure a wipe and reinstall should do *something* for me. And
while I'm at it, I might as well upgrade the drive, on the *extremely*
outside chance that I picked up a root kit that anti virus is not
likely to find.

That's my sad story, and I'm sticking to it.

This has actually been tricker than was expected, mostly because people
don't really realize what their eye movements or blinks _really_ are.
Apparently people do both more than they think they do, which causes quite
a few unpredictable movements and clicks. Still, this is an area under very
active research, from what I understand.

I want a holographic screen I won't leave finger prints on when I use the
 touch based movements.

Again, I'm not entirely sure this is really what you want. We like the idea
of gestures in the air, but there has been some work to indicate that we
also like feedback and response. It is why you get so many people arguing
about the merits of a virtual keyboard vs an IBM Selectric keyboard.

And I want a girlfriend/wife/whatever that wants to watch whatever I want

I wonder if this is really what you want, too... or if it has to do with

Presumably some sort of add-on acting up? Have you tried starting FF
in safe mode (there should be a shortcut for this in the start menu).
Then try adding add-ons back one at a time. Can we assume browsing in

What's really surprising to me is that this happens in two OS's. And
that it happens in Win7. Something in common odd there, like maybe a
video driver issue.

it just runs at 1/5 speed. The only way to recover from it is to shut down.

In Windows 7, I can start Firefox and run it until I get to certain pages
that seem to have some kind of video in them (playing or not). An example
includes http://www.aopa.org/summit/live.cfm. The YouTube home page will
do it also, though not quite 1/5 speed (more like 1/3). When I leave the
offending page, the system goes back to normal speed (although, several
seconds behind). I can even leave Firefox running.

Um..yeah. Once again he's talking without looking. Technically a 'wfb' if
you can find one, can run the magic mouse. Drivers are out there.

Re: [CGUYS] Consternation over Computer Constipation - help!

I uninstalled Zone Alarm Pro (after activating the Windows firewall). So
far, things are better - loading web pages and documents. FF still seems a
little sluggish at times, with IE being somewhat faster.

Thanks

Uninstall Zone Alarm Pro completely. I think you are going to find that
 was the problem.

Ever so often anybody's updates can and will break things and security
software has deeper hooks into your machine than any other besides the OS
 itself.

If it solves the problem, contact ZA support and let them tell you how to
fix it. You might have to go back to the previous version and don't do
updates until they fix the problem.

seems to be working better (opens links, loads pages, etc.) though some
pages are still pretty slow. I'll do these other steps as well. Should I
uninstall some of the spyware programs and uninstall Zone Alarm Pro,
including firewall (while turning on Windows firewall) to see if this
 improves loading speed?

Generally, you don't need a firewall in any Win version after 2000.

Subject: [CGUYS] Consternation over Computer Constipation - help!

Once again I seek the wisdom that is so generously dispensed here. My

 Dell
desk top just doesn't seem to want to do anything right...or quickly.
 When
I click on links nothing happens. Sites don't load or only very, very
slowly, hence the constipation metaphor. IE freezes up and Fire Fox
 (which
is what I usually use) is having the above problems. Documents also
 open
slowly. These problems seem to have occurred or become significantly
 worse
since I installed the upgrade for the free AVG software on Dec 1, when
 the
previous version expired, so wonder if this has a role. I notice that
 it
now has a spy ware software, as well as the free Zone Alarm Pro version
 I
downloaded maybe 2 months ago (the previous free version didn't have
 this
 as
I recall). I also have at least one other spyware program running, so
wonder if I have too much of a good thing.

My question is - I don't even know where to start to figure out what's
 wrong
or how to fix it. Are there simple steps I should take to see if the
problem(s) get better? I can't even fix the message that says Firefox
 is
not able to show the Toolbar. Don't know if this is related, but in
Firefox, don't even have the back keys highlighted or functional.
  Tried
 to
reinstall Firefox but got a message and wouldn't even let me do this.
 One
other thing - the program that is supposed to automatically begin to
download pics from digital camera to PC also isn't working (and it once
did). Couldn't get this fixed, either. Don't know if this might be
 related
 to other problems.

Is my computer now like a very old person or car, where too many things
 are
breaking down and it looks terminal?? Should I just start uninstalling
questionable software? I'm afraid if I start tinkering, I'll make
 things
worse. I have 1 gig of memory. Should I add more? Will this
 magically
 solve everything?! :)

 Thanks as always

 Randall

I hadn't thought about that. Since so many Mac owners actually run

Presumably some sort of add-on acting up? Have you tried starting FF
in safe mode (there should be a shortcut for this in the start menu).
Then try adding add-ons back one at a time. Can we assume browsing in
other browsers doesn't affect the system?

I don't load up with add-ons. Actually, none that I install on
purpose. Flash, Shockwave, Java. That's about it. I wondered if maybe
it was a Flash or Java thing.

I don't have any other browsers. . .well, IE, but I refuse to use
that, but I can download something.

Like I said, I completely wiped all traces of FF in XP, and still had
the same problem after reinstalling. I just wonder if FF found the
Windows 7 profile when I reinstalled in XP.

What's really surprising to me is that this happens in two OS's. And
that it happens in Win7. Something in common odd there, like maybe a
video driver issue.

I'd buy the video driver issue with Win7, but the XP drivers have been
the same forever.

If you don't use add-ons, what's the point of using Firefox? You may
as well use IE8; it's actually safer than FF right now. But for
testing purposes there's also Opera and Chrome.
