Re: [CGUYS] Windows Update i.e. IE 6, 7, 8

That's pretty vague. What problem exactly? Is there some update the
app needs that you don't have? e.g. I can understand maybe needing a
certain version of the .net framework.

So why, if the problem involves McAfee and Windows Update, did you ask
about updates to Internet Explorer? There's certainly nothing wrong
with updating to IE8 _before_ installing McAfee.

Are you getting some specific error from the installer? Is this a
fresh install or is/was there old security software installed? What
OS?

I checked my setting for Windows Update and, they are set properly.  I just
 upgraded to IE 8.

Please tell me how to hide the update.  It appears everytime I boot up.
Or, should I just knuckle under and install the update?

The only trouble I'm having is that MS seems to be pushing IE8--even after I've
declined to install it 3 times now, and have hidden that update.  I don't use
IE (except for updates), and don't want an update.

I have auto updates set for notifications, but if you use the icon at the
bottom of the screen, you do not get to see what is downloading.  You do get a
chance to see what the updates are before you install them.  I suspect I have
downloaded IE8...maybe even twice, but have not allowed the install.

I'm using XP Home SP3.

I'd be curious to know what the concern is regarding IE8 as opposed to
anything else MS wants to install. Just because I have had it for a while,
and was not aware of any unusual risk.

IE8 is considered an important security update. Install it. You may
think you don't use it, but you might use parts of it when running
other apps (e.g. Steam requires IE8 for previews).

That would seem logical. But, I haven't received any notices about an
update, apart from IE8.

I asked about IE8 because, I found several people on the Net, who had
trouble with Windows Update after IE5.

Are you getting some specific error from the installer? Is this a fresh install

I keep getting installation failure notices. The software is direct
from Comcast's website. Where, The have Mcafee Security Suite($120
value) free for all Comcast customers. My OS is XP Pro SP2.

Oddly, that brings back memories. As I recall, I couldn't install that
one either. Seemed like a good deal, though I bet they would start
charging for updates after a bit.
