Re: [CGUYS] Windows XP Service Pack 3 (KB936929)
Yes, I was able to solve the problem, with guided direction from the C-Guys. The article you posted is a good summary of what I went through; thanks for including this. What was apparently was affecting my computer was the AMD processor, which may have been exacerbated by it being on an Asus MB. I did try the MS support. MS Tech Support got back to me several days after I had the problem resolved, and offered this solution: * As I understand, after installing Windows XP Service Pack 3 (SP3), the computer can only boot into Safe Mode. If I have misunderstood the situation, please let me know. Please be assured that I will work with you closely to resolve our issue. Before moving on, I would like to confirm if the system is preinstalled by the computer manufacturer. If this is the case, I would like to explain that this issue can occur since the same image to Intel-based computers is deployed on the computer which is non-Intel-based. Hence, the computer cannot boot up properly. Considering the current situation, I suggest we try the following steps to check if we can make any progress: Suggestion 1: Disable the IntelPPM service using the relevant command: === In Safe Mode, please go to Start, Run, and type CMD. Click OK to open a DOS like command window. In the window, please enter the following command: sc config intelppm start= disabled Press the Enter key to execute the command. Restart the computer to check the result. If the issue persists, let’s try to modify the relevant registry keys to disable the IntelPPM service Suggestion 2: Modify registry keys to disable the IntelPPM service === Please go to Start, Run, and type REGEDIT. Click OK to open Registry Editor. In the left pane, please locate the following key: My Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\intelppm 3. Right click the above key and choose Export. Please save the file as backup in .reg format. If any unexpected issue occur, we can restore the registry keys. Highlight the above key and double click the subkey named Start in the right pane. In the open window, please change the value to 4. Click OK to save the change. Quit Registry Editor and restart the computer to check the result. If the issue persists, please understand that we may need to recover the system using the installation disk of Windows XP. To avoid confusion, let’s discuss the action plan in our next communication. Please try the above steps and let me know the results at your earliest convenience. I questioned whether I needed to also address this issue with Compaq, but haven't heard anything back from MS, nor do I expect to. I imagine the debate between MS and HP is only just beginning. Richard P. Not sure if you ever solved your problem, but I've been hearing a lot about Intel/AMD drivers that can cause the problem you described. http://www.computerworld.com/action/article.do?command=viewArticleBasicarti cleId=9085358source=rss_news10 or http://tinyurl.com/5cstka However, HP has posted a document to its support site that shifts the blame right back to Microsoft. After installing the initial release of Service Pack 3 for Windows XP an error condition can occur, the HP document reads. The Service Pack 3 update copies an Intel power management driver to the computer that was not on the computer before the update [emphasis added]. During Windows startup, computers with AMD processors may experience a blue screen error. FWIW, I've installed SP3 on nothing but AMD machines without any trouble. About 4 so far, though none are HPs. 3 Dell's and 1 hand-rolled and none have OEM installs, which seems to be the problem. -Original Message- FYI, I went ahead and downloaded/installed the Windows XP Service Pack 3 (KB936929) update, which installed OK, but upon the mandatory reboot, the computer came up with the BSOD momentarily and then to the options screen. When I repeatedly tried to start normally, it failed each time as well as when I chose Last Good Configuration. I ended up having to boot into safe-mode and then do a system restore back to before the SP3 install. The BSOD only flashes on for 1/30 of a second so I can't see what it is. Any ideas? The Compaq Presario Win XP Media Center has all critical updates installed up until SP3. I was able to back it off successfully. Then, when Microsoft came out with a Refresh of Release Candidate 2, I tried it again, and it worked perfectly. I was rather surprised that the released version was having problems. Apparently, they must have changed something between RC2 Refresh and release. Which I haven't received, yet. I don't know if the Release Candidate version will block the Update version or not. -- Roger Lovettsville, VA * ** List info, subscription management, list rules, archives, privacy ** ** policy, calmness, a member map, and more at http://www.cguys.org/ ** *
Re: [CGUYS] Windows XP Service Pack 3 (KB936929)
What's the best (easiest), way to check all of the drivers? Or do I have to go through them one by one and try to update each one individually? When I went to Compaq's website for my model, I didn't see anything which indicated that new drivers were available: http://tinyurl.com/5aco9c I don't see any previous driver versions listed so I'm assuming that what is on my computer is current. Or am I missing something? Thanks, Richard Jeff Wright wrote: Most likely it's a driver issue: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/330182 Make sure you have the latest drivers installed from your computer's mfr. -Original Message- More info: I was able to find the Stop Error which is: Stop: 0x007E (0xc005, 0xBAAD8756, 0xBACC3430, 0xBACC312c) I did some of the MS SP3 installation tips without success (disabling antivirus and anti-spyware programs). According to the MS website, SP3 should work on this computer. * ** List info, subscription management, list rules, archives, privacy ** ** policy, calmness, a member map, and more at http://www.cguys.org/ ** *

I've installed the Release Candidate 2 (BSOD) and the Release Candidate 2 Refresh (no problems) on my AMD-based Presario. As I said, no problems. If you are already current with patches, you shouldn't notice much. Re: [CGUYS] Windows XP Service Pack 3 (KB936929)
MS pulled it back from wide distribution because of a very limited set of problems, but you can still get it here: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=5B33B5A8-5E76-401F- BE08-1E1555D4F3D4displaylang=en http://tinyurl.com/4qvth5 -Original Message- Well, it seems I'm going to have to reinstall XP in the wife's laptop, so I'd like to install SP3 immediately. I did a google search and came across this. http://www.tipandtrick.net/2008/windows-xp-sp3-bsod-endless-reboot-loop- with-stop-c139-on-gdi32dll-error/ or http://tinyurl.com/6mnkav I've run the SP3 blocker on our XP systems here but I might try to install it on a a test system just to find out what happens. Or... you could try to reinstall SP3 and then the steps listed on the web page. :-) Larry -Original Message- From: Computer Guys Discussion List [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Richard P. If you decide later you want SP3 to be automagically installed, just redo the command but instead of the /b use /u instead. Thanks Richard P. Installed using the stand alone installer, worked fine, no problems. Only issue I've heard is that it is not a good idea to create a slipstreamed xp installer with sp 3 on a vista box. Other then that...no issues. Mike Any comments or experiences about installing SP3? Re: [CGUYS] Windows XP Service Pack 3 (KB936929)
Is there a version on CD as there was with WinXP SP2? At the time of SP2, I only had dialup so I ordered the CD. I later heard that some people who used the downloaded version had problems that did not occur with the CD version.
