Conservation of Plastics Professional Workshop

October 9-12, 2018, Pratt Institute, Brooklyn, NY
Cost: $650.00

Instructor: Yvonne Shashoua,PhD, Senior Researcher, Conservation Science,
National Museum of Denmark
Organizers: Cindie Kehlet, Sarah Nunberg

Course limited to 18 participants, open to mid-career conservators,
conservation scientists and curators.

To Apply: Please send a statement of interest and resume to Sarah Nunberg,
snunb...@pratt.edu

Deadline for Application: September 5, 2018

Course Description: This four day course is divided equally between theoretical
and practical sessions. Conservation of Plastics will enable participants to
identify the major families of polymers in heritage collections and the most
problematic additives, understand the causes of degradation in common plastics
types and to recognize and monitor their symptoms in objects. The state of the
art for preventive conservation will be discussed and include the latest
research on the effectiveness of adsorbents and cold storage. Through practical
work, participants will also learn and practice the least damaging techniques
to clean, adhere and consolidate plastics as films and foams. New generation
plastics coming into collections including recycled and bioplastics will also
be discussed.

Instructor:

Yvonne Shashoua is a Senior Researcher at the National Museum of Denmark
investigating the degradation and conservation of plastics. After graduating
in industrial chemistry she worked as a paint technologist. She joined the
British Museum as a conservation scientist in 1988, specializing in the
deterioration reactions and conservation of cellulose nitrate, cellulose
acetate and rubber from 1995. Yvonne relocated to Denmark in 1998 when offered
a PhD scholarship in the degradation pathways and conservation of plasticized
PVC at the Danish Technical University and National Museum. She has more than
100 publications including a monograph ´Conservation of Plastics-materials
science, degradation and preservation´ published by Elsevier in 2008. Yvonne
was coordinator of International Council of Museums – Committee for
Conservation´s working group Modern Materials and Contemporary Art until 2008.
Current active research interests include the stability of bioplastics, the
application of nanomaterials to clean and consolidate modern artworks and the
transfer of knowledge of plastics in museums to plastics in the environment.

Program:

Day 1: Introduction and aims
Historical development of plastics
Chemistry and physics of plastics
Plastics properties

Practical session to identify types of plastics using non-destructive and
destructive tests

Day 2: Why don’t plastics last forever-degradation happens!

Conservation of plastics-intelligent inhibitive
Practical session to recognize, document and monitor deterioration of plastics
Use of adsorbents and low temperatures to slow deterioration

Day 3:
Challenges of active conservation of plastics Cleaning plastics

Pratt’s Science and Art Symposium V
April 18 and 19, 2018
Science at the interface of Artists’ Materials, Techniques, and Conservation

This international symposium brings together scientists, art conservators, art
historians, curators, and archeologists, who will explore the fundamental
scientific and art historical questions that relate to the understanding and
conservation of art. Moreover, the symposium provides the opportunity of dialog
among these disciplines, which need to work together in order to preserve our
works of art and cultural heritage for future generations.
A collaboration of Pratt Institute chemists, art historians, and art
conservators have organized this symposium to further interdisciplinary work.
Prof. Eleonora Del Federico and Prof. Cindie Kehlet, Department of Mathematics
and Science have spearheaded the symposium with help from Prof. Diana Gisolfi
and Prof. Lisa Banner, History of Art and Design and Stockman Family Fellow
Sarah Nunberg, Department of Mathematics and Science.

[Consdistlist] modular cleaning program workshop at pratt in brooklyn, NY

2017-04-24 Thread SARAH NUNBERG via consdistlist

UPCOMING PROGRAM

Modular Cleaning Program and Gel Solvent Workshop
June 12-16, 2017
Pratt Institute, Department of Math and Science, Brooklyn, NY

Instructor: Chris Stavroudis, conservator in private practice, West Hollywood,
CA

The Modular Cleaning Program (MCP) is a systematic approach for the cleaning of
artworks utilizing a Filemaker Pro database system. This system has been
developed to assist conservators in their approach to cleaning art utilizing
water-borne systems, solvents, solvent gels and emulsions. In addition, this
aids the conservator in formulating and combining stock solutions, which allows
the conservator to create optimized cleaning solutions for more precise and
tailored treatments. While developed from the perspective of paintings
conservation, the methodology is universal and applicable to any cleaning
environment.

This five-day workshop will provide conservators with a series of concentrated
aqueous stock solutions and the materials to mix a range of emulsions and
microemulsions. The provided database, “The Modular Cleaning Program,” assists
the conservator in formulating and combining stock solutions which allows the
conservator to create optimized cleaning solutions for more precise and
tailored treatments. The workshop consists of approximately 2 days of lecture
interspersed into the hands-on workshop.

Registration fee: $650.00
(includes materials)

Please send a statement of interest and resume/CV with your name, current
contact information, and institutional affiliation (if any) to
snunb...@pratt.edu and ckeh...@pratt.edu with the subject line “Modular
Cleaning Program Application” by May 6, 2017.
