removing MandrakeSoft logos trademarks from the product). This seems
to be a catch 22.

The GPL requires you to display an appropriate copyright, while it is
not clear in this, I would take that to mean that I must display a
Mandrake copyright notice on the software Mandrake wrote. Additionally
it requires that if it is an interactive program that I display an
appropriate copyright notice if the program displays that. Since
Mandrakesoft would obviously lay trademark rights to it's own name, how
can I possibly comply?

IMO : the code source is GPL, so you can use it, fork it sell it, etc..
using the terms of the GPL, which are : you have to display the authors
of the program and clearly indicate the changes that you made. Now, what
Mandrakesoft prevents you is using the Mandrakesoft trademark as
advertisement or promotion to commercialise their product. This is not
the same thing : on one hand, the GPL ask you to make a notice of the
authors when you use their intellectual work, and this, Mandrakesoft
cannot prevent you to do it, because they would prevent you to fullfill
the terms of the GPL, thus they would break the GPL themselves. On the
other hand, the GPL does not grant you the right to use the reputation
of a trade mark. In this latter case, this is not the GPL which applies,
but the laws on trade marks.

So it seems that Mandrake is not alone in thinking that security
 products deserve specially crafted licenses.

Just in case anyone is wondering about this, details are here:
http://dansguardian.org/?page=copyright2

Frankly, I think this guy is smoking crack. What he's saying is that
you can't download it from his site for commercial use unless you pay
him a fee. If I download it from another site then I can use it for
commercial purposes as much as I like. After a discussion with RMS
apparently he updated the site to make this more clear.

Frankly, I think this is an end run around the GPL. He wants to get the
benefit of saying he's doing open source software, while at the same
time trying to get paid in the same manner as a proprietary vendor. At
best his text is terribly confusing.

So yeah it is GPL but it is not. I feel that the authors intent
certainly violates the FSF principle freedoms as defined here:
http://www.fsf.org/philosophy/free-sw.html
In particular the principle of freedom for any use.

And I feel he violates the Open Source principles of non-discrimination
which is part of the Open Source definition as found here:
http://www.opensource.org/docs/definition.php

It appears that the FSF has already tried to educate him, and the page
was changed to make it a download fee, but I still think it's confusing
and downright dirty pool. You can read the thread that got him to make
some changes here:
http://www.be.linux.org/pipermail/asbl-libre/2001-October/24.html

At any rate I feel Mandrake should immediately remove this product from
MNF. I don't see how this is any different from the pine issue. And at
the very end of that page you'll see that the author still tries to
imply that a commercial user downloading from someplace else is using an
illegal download.

If Mandrake doesn't do that, perhaps those of us who are mirror Mandrake
should consider removing the MNF ISOs until they do.

[Cooker] [Bug 312] [OpenOffice.org] OpenOffice looks for SANE libraries in wrong place

--- Additional Comments From [EMAIL PROTECTED] 2002-12-18 11:42 ---
To trigger the bug it is sufficient to try to scan a document when the sane rpm
packages are installed and a scanner is linked to the PC. On my machine, it is
impossible to properly select a scan source unless the link described above is made.

Mandrakesoft prevents you is using the Mandrakesoft trademark as
advertisement or promotion to commercialise their product. This is not
the same thing : on one hand, the GPL ask you to make a notice of the

cannot prevent you to do it, because they would prevent you to fullfill
the terms of the GPL, thus they would break the GPL themselves. On the

but the laws on trade marks.

It's an esoteric issue. I can see interpretations of it in several
ways. No matter what the interpretation is, Mandrake should publically
explain in very precise terms what they are asking of everyone.

Yes, but it is not so much esoteric : you may and have to mention the
mandrake name if you use their GPL code. It is not the same thing than
using their name to promote a product. If you put Mandrake's code in
your GPL program, you may do so, and you need to say in the source that
that part of code has been written by MDK. However, it is not allowed to
advertise Buy my incredible product, powered by Mandrakesoft MNF code

apparently he updated the site to make this more clear.

Frankly, I think this is an end run around the GPL. He wants to get the
benefit of saying he's doing open source software, while at the same
time trying to get paid in the same manner as a proprietary vendor. At
best his text is terribly confusing.

I totally agree with you.

The first sentence shows For all non-commercial use DansGuardian 2 can
be downloaded under the GPL http://www.fsf.org/licenses/gpl.html

This is a complete non-sense : the first part introduces a restriction,
which is incompatible with the terms of the licence. It is exactly like
Ford, who sold only black cars in the 20s for economy reasons, who said
You can choose the colour you want, if this colour is the black.

What he could have done, is restrict the download of binaries and source
code, and comply to the GPL by giving the source only to people who buy
the binaries. But he would loose the public help to enhance his code,
because it would be more difficult to spread his code.

I do not understand how RMS could accept that. I guess he just put the
fact that RMS has read that to have a kind of excuse...

I want to make some precisions to what I wrote : by commercial use he
seems to mean non-GPL software. Because he says that incorporating to a
selling distribution is allowed freely. So by that definition it would
be ok.
However, I do not like that confusion with commercial and
proprietary or closed-source.
And the Mandrake page about MNF has the same problem.
What has to be emphasized is the fact that the GPL IS also a commercial
licence. You may make money with it.
I know that for a lot of people that they quickly conclude that GPL
means free-beer and non-commercial, and maybe using the word
commercial is better in their MNF advertisement.
But I think it is disppointing that the Linux and GPL advocates like
Mandrake contribute to that confusion.

Thats not true, but it is true that there should be an own list for

Shouldnt i be more like ,if I have a bug put it on Bugzilla, if you want
to a part of the solution and help solve the problem then put it on the
cooker list for open debate, with a link to Bugzilla, the solution is
then posted at bugzilla for history and bugtracking? then we dont need
every bugzilla entry on the cooker list.

people with a bugzilla account can then subscribe to that list.?

Yes, that's much better I think.

This is not a big problem, except my /home is under automount. So, 20 or

With 70 computer on network, this is hard...
This happens when using KDE, but I can't figure if it is involved.

Because Mandrake can't vouch for their integrity. The building of SRPMs is
(most likely) an automated process, and obviously the source is not looked at
for each revision of an app. I do however also find the errors by rpmdrake
_very_ annoying. Could Mandrake perhaps include a seperate key for signing
contrib apps, and give a message (but only once) that the signing only proves
that the package was built by Mandrake, nothing else.

WDYT?

Sorry, somewhere it lost my original message but because I have kmail set to
most secure it won't view any HTML documents. Weird, considering I wasn't
trying to send a HTML message. Anyhow, here is the problem reposted:

When I run menudrake (as root), from within MCC I can not load the menu. If I

[Cooker] KBabel slow and crashes...

2002-12-18 Thread Thomas Backlund
KBabel 1.0 crashes with errorcode 11 (SIGSEGV)

This happens with large '.po' files like the DrakX-fi.po wich has 2300
entries in it. The Backtrace is last in this mail...
(it also happends when reading through many of the smaller files,
 but not so often ...)

My system is a laptop P3-700 with 512MB of RAM.
I'm running cooker, updated as of today 03.00 EET.
 - kernel-2.4.20.2mdk-1-1mdk
 - kdebase-3.1-0.rc5.7mdk
 - kdesdk-3.1-0.rc5.3mdk
 - glibc-2.3.1-2mdk
 - libqt3-3.1.1-1mdk
(this problem has been around for almost a month,
I have been updating the system every second day...)

the Translation Database is set to use all '-fi.po' files...
(wich is a total of about 8000 entries)

I can easily reproduce it like this:
I start KBabel translation Manager, and from there open the DrakX-fi.po.
Using the buttons to move to previous/next untranslated/fuzzy entries
repeatedly kbabel slows down more and more. The same happends if
I'm stepping through the file line by line with page up/down buttons.
It slows down, freezes and crashes

The installation process asks whether one would like to boot directly into eg. KDE,
and later
asks whether or not to start the X Server during boot. It would be more logical to ask
the latter
first, and only if 'yes' ask whether to auto-login.

Read the security advisory at http://security.e-matters.de/advisories/042002.html .

The hole has been corrected in MySQL version 3.23.54.
Currently, the latest release is 3.23.54a (which corrects a minor problem with
3.23.54).

The hole looks serious, updated 3.23.54a package should be prepared ASAP for
9.0, 8.2 and earlier releases and distributed through MandrakeUpdate before
script kiddie exploits arrive (it might be too late already).

2002-12-18 Thread Rocco Stanzione
Marcel,

Great, thanks! I'm also very willing to help. The patches I use are:

ipt_time: Great shutting off internet access for the kids after 10pm or
something
ipt_string: Matches strings within packet payloads
ipt_psd: Portscan detector, very nice
ipt_nth: match every nth packet
ipt_iplimit: you know about that one, quite useful
ipt_recent: make a temporary bad-guy rule for someone who 'recently', say,
triggered the portscan detector
ip_conntrack_pptp and ip_nat_pptp: for allowing vpn connections from/through
the firewall machine (I don't think these are part of patch-o-matic)

Thanks!

Rocco

On Saturday 14 December 2002 04:20 am, Marcel Pol spake thusly:
Which patches are the usefull ones over there? I haven't looked much there,
just at string and iplimit, and iplimit seems interesting.
Which ones do you use, and would you recommend? Most of that stuff doesn't
change much, and shouldn't be that hard to make a patch of that patches
into the mdk-kernel. I'd be willing to help wth that.

Okay let me backup and explain in detail what I'm trying to do here with
this argument... As it standards now the VAR question on the licensing
page is problematic for me. Mandrake is telling us that it's licensed
under the GPL, but then putting a but in there. While I think this is a
valid but, I think they are being intentionally vague here. I know darn
well that if I showed this to my lawyer his response would be Pay the

like I'm getting coerced into buying this. I don't mind paying for
GPLed products, I just don't like getting coerced into buying them. So
I'm trying to get them to clarify preciously what I have to do to
comply with their intellectual property rights.

[Cooker] Urgent help about network.img rebuild !!!

2002-12-18 Thread Mircea Ciocan
	Cooker gurus, please help,

For a while I was strugling with a friends Sony Vaio laptop with
Transmeta processor and some kind of crapified ALI chipset that was
dying at boot on Mkd 9.0 and cooker, now I was able to recompile a
2.4.20 kernel de-ALIfied, mount the network.img disk, replace the
existing vmlinuz and generate a small bootable CD from it ( to make
thing crappyer this laptop don't have a floppy, also and the CD-ROM is
some kind of FireWire that only leaves the network install path open),
to our nice surprise the thing booted OK and then failed to load the
network module ( 8139too) due the expected unresolved symbols.
OK then I've mounted the network.rdz system image and then abruptly
stopped, the modules are compressed with some kind of an archiver that I
don't know and the archive extension is .mar !!!, I've never heard of
it, can a guru of you help me with a indication or pointer to overcome
that, we are anxious to see that little noty with Cooker on it and
#mdk-cooker is dead :(

		Thank you,

#3 0x4051d008 in gtk_input_remove () from /usr/lib/libgtk-x11-2.0.so.0

With autoconf 2.5 the autoconf file can be named configure.ac instead

 configure.ac

Yup, though not many packages uses configure.ac solely, I think rpm

Yet another problem:

%{_target_platform} --target %{_target_platform} \\\

Adding --host and --target will put autoconf 2.5x into cross compile
mode. The result is, some packages will contain funny named binaries
such as i586-mandrake-linux-foobar, and need to use ugly hacks to fix
it. It's good for all to turn --host and --target off. This has been
discussed in various places, I think.
