Ben Reser wrote: e) On the license page which I've already provided the URL to several times above... you say that if I decide to as a VAR sell MNF to my clients that I must conform to all of MandrakeSoft's intellectual rights and trademark protections listed in the product (this includes removing MandrakeSoft logos trademarks from the product). This seems to be a catch 22. The GPL requires you to display an appropriate copyright, while it is not clear in this, I would take that to mean that I must display a Mandrake copyright notice on the software Mandrake wrote. Additionally it requires that if it is an interactive program that I display an appropriate copyright notice if the program displays that. Since Mandrakesoft would obviously lay trademark rights to it's own name, how can I possibly comply? IMO : the code source is GPL, so you can use it, fork it sell it, etc.. using the terms of the GPL, which are : you have to display the authors of the program and clearly indicate the changes that you made. Now, what Mandrakesoft prevents you is using the Mandrakesoft trademark as advertisement or promotion to commercialise their product. This is not the same thing : on one hand, the GPL ask you to make a notice of the authors when you use their intellectual work, and this, Mandrakesoft cannot prevent you to do it, because they would prevent you to fullfill the terms of the GPL, thus they would break the GPL themselves. On the other hand, the GPL does not grant you the right to use the reputation of a trade mark. In this latter case, this is not the GPL which applies, but the laws on trade marks. Just in case anyone is wondering about this, details are here: http://dansguardian.org/?page=copyright2 Frankly, I think this guy is smoking crack. What he's saying is that you can't download it from his site for commercial use unless you pay him a fee. If I download it from another site then I can use it for commercial purposes as much as I like. After a discussion with RMS apparently he updated the site to make this more clear. Frankly, I think this is an end run around the GPL. He wants to get the benefit of saying he's doing open source software, while at the same time trying to get paid in the same manner as a proprietary vendor. At best his text is terribly confusing. So yeah it is GPL but it is not. I feel that the authors intent certainly violates the FSF principle freedoms as defined here: http://www.fsf.org/philosophy/free-sw.html In particular the principle of freedom for any use. And I feel he violates the Open Source principles of non-discrimination which is part of the Open Source definition as found here: http://www.opensource.org/docs/definition.php It appears that the FSF has already tried to educate him, and the page was changed to make it a download fee, but I still think it's confusing and downright dirty pool. You can read the thread that got him to make some changes here: http://www.be.linux.org/pipermail/asbl-libre/2001-October/24.html At any rate I feel Mandrake should immediately remove this product from MNF. I don't see how this is any different from the pine issue. And at the very end of that page you'll see that the author still tries to imply that a commercial user downloading from someplace else is using an illegal download. If Mandrake doesn't do that, perhaps those of us who are mirror Mandrake should consider removing the MNF ISOs until they do. -- Ben Reser [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://ben.reser.org If you're not making any mistakes, you're flat out not trying hard enough. - Jim Nichols

I guess he just put the fact that RMS has read that to have a kind of excuse... Eric I want to make some precisions to what I wrote : by commercial use he seems to mean non-GPL software. Because he says that incorporating to a selling distribution is allowed freely. So by that definition it would be ok. However, I do not like that confusion with commercial and proprietary or closed-source. And the Mandrake page about MNF has the same problem. What has to be emphasized is the fact that the GPL IS also a commercial licence. You may make money with it. I know that for a lot of people that they quickly conclude that GPL means free-beer and non-commercial, and maybe using the word commercial is better in their MNF advertisement. But I think it is disppointing that the Linux and GPL advocates like Mandrake contribute to that confusion. Eric

Could Mandrake perhaps include a seperate key for signing contrib apps, and give a message (but only once) that the signing only proves that the package was built by Mandrake, nothing else. [Cooker] KBabel slow and crashes...
KBabel 1.0 crashes with errorcode 11 (SIGSEGV) This happens with large '.po' files like the DrakX-fi.po wich has 2300 entries in it. The Backtrace is last in this mail... OK then I've mounted the network.rdz system image and then abruptly stopped, the modules are compressed with some kind of an archiver that I don't know and the archive extension is .mar !!!, I've never heard of it, can a guru of you help me with a indication or pointer to overcome that, we are anxious to see that little noty with Cooker on it and #mdk-cooker is dead :( Thank you, Mircea C.

[Cooker] [Bug 598] [XFree86-server] Radeon 7500 hardware acceleration not working
https://qa.mandrakesoft.com/show_bug.cgi?id=598 --- Additional Comments From [EMAIL PROTECTED] 2002-12-18 22:09 --- Does this lockup happen at a specific time? ie. on boot? Does it just sit with a blank screen or is there corruption? Does it lock up due to some user input like switching between virtual consoles and then back to X? --- You are receiving this mail because: --- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is. --- Reminder: --- assigned_to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] description: Hi guys, I have someone at mandrakeexpeert, paid incident, that has a problem with a Radeon 7500, the card does not work (locks up) if he uses hardware acceleration, switching of hardware acceleration with Option NoAccell will make the system work, I adviced him to get the latest packages from cooker since I saw there have been fixes for dri applied, but his problem still persists, however RedHat 8.0 will work just fine with hardware acceleration. Maybe you can check if there are more patches available or maybe remove some that don't work. The incident number is : 37844 So if you need more infos just stop by and ask.
[Cooker] Re: [guile] libguile version 9 wanted

Gnucash maintainer will know what to do with his package since is probably following its development, or even add support for new guile and contribute upstream. Guile maintainer will probably not revert back to old guile because of one program relying on oldies and possibly obsolete things. Why would he? Well now I don't feel so bad. [Cooker] [Bug 591] [galeon] galeon segfaulting _very_ frequently
https://qa.mandrakesoft.com/show_bug.cgi?id=591 --- Additional Comments From [EMAIL PROTECTED] 2002-12-18 22:30 --- It's not really reproductible... Anyway the problem seems to be in gtkmozembed, not in galeon The current backtrace I currently get with galeon-1.3.1-1mdk and mozilla-1.2.1-1mdk is quite similar to the one I submited to gnome bugzilla : #0 0x40023d22 in EmbedPrivate::GetPIDOMWindow () from /usr/lib/mozilla-1.2.1/libgtkembedmoz.so #1 0x4002398b in EmbedPrivate::TopLevelFocusOut () from /usr/lib/mozilla-1.2.1/libgtkembedmoz.so #2 0x4002269d in gtk_moz_embed_new () from /usr/lib/mozilla-1.2.1/libgtkembedmoz.so #3 0x4051d008 in gtk_input_remove () from /usr/lib/libgtk-x11-2.0.so.0 I use a 56K dialup connection tonight so I'll update my cooker tomorrow and see if there is a change. --- You are receiving this mail because: --- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is. --- Reminder: --- assigned_to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] description: The latest galeon is segfaulting for me on a very frequent basis. It seems to be related to opening new tabs/pages and happens about 1 in 3 or 1 in 4 times I try to open a new page or tab.

Re: [Cooker] %configure2_5x rpm macro

So the libtoolize call should check also check for configure.ac Yup, though not many packages uses configure.ac solely, I think rpm maintainer (flepied?) should consider adding this bit now. Yet another problem: [...snip...] $CONFIGURE_TOP/configure --build %{_target_platform} --host %{_target_platform} --target %{_target_platform} \\\ [...snip...] Adding --host and --target will put autoconf 2.5x into cross compile mode. The result is, some packages will contain funny named binaries such as i586-mandrake-linux-foobar, and need to use ugly hacks to fix it. It's good for all to turn --host and --target off.
