2018-02-21 Thread Elisenda Cuadros

Thank you for your reply.

I would really like to be able to buy a Talos 2 system, I've been
following the development news for months and it's really impressive
what Raptor is doing

Last photos in Fosdem were stunning!.

Like you, I think the price is very reasonable given the kind of system
it is.

For now it is out of my budget but I hope this could change in the
future. I wish Raptor all the success.

I don´t plan to use KGPE-D16 for gaming but more like a general-purpose
workstation.

Now I have a 6238 and I think I will buy a 6282 for the second socket.

Thank you very much for your offering and your support Taiidan.

Regards,

- Eli

I don't know how raptor did it, but it costs less and has more better
features than the equivilant in performance never owner controlled
x86_64 new AMD/Intel options.

Libre Firmware Talos 2:
Board and the base 4 core cpu - $2,500

Much slower libre firmware opteron:
$415 for KGPE-D16 + approx $500 for dual 6386SE CPU's = $1,000

An extra $1,500 is worth it for a motherboard that has a future, and
to help ensure the future of owner controlled hardware.

https://raptorcs.com

Notes:
Raptor also made the libre firmware for the KGPE-D16 and KCMA-D8
boards, and a variety of other coreboot motherboards - so they have a
proven track record.
If the T2 isn't successful it will be the end of high performance
owner controlled hardware, which is why I urge everyone with the means
to purchase one instead of a non-free x86_64 system - it is worth it
both for the performance (PCI-e 4.0, SMT4, IBM's great OpenBMC etc)
and for the freedom (FSF RYF cert pending!)

generally for the best G34 CPU's price is about the same -  6386SE

There's a modest single digit performance boost at isoclock, but the
63xx series also has the fastest core you will see in the

Both are 32nm and completely obsolete by modern standards. The POWER9

say rather than looking for maximum absolute performance at high cost,
go for the 62xx series. It'll still last you a long time for moderate

Hello Taiidan,

-1) why is 6328 better for games? (compared to 6386SE?)
Faster clock speeds rather than an extra 8 un-used cores, there are very
few games that can use more than 8 cores fewer still that would
cooperate with the 16 core opteron NUMA arrangement that divides your
RAM (the 16 core optys are two 8 core CPU's on a single die)

You can also use isolcpus=2,3,4,5 to get Turbo 2 in case your games only
use 4 cores.

6328 is equivilant to an FX-8310

-2) where can I buy 6386SE for less than 250 USD? Is this price for preowned
units?
Yeah it is, there isn't any reason to buy a new CPU as they last 20
years versus the much shorter lifespan for motherboard components such
as capacitors.

I have been hunting for these items on ebay for 2 months or more, but I see
only offers @ 400USD and more!..

6328:
There are a few for $100/ea right now

6386SE:
There were some working scratch and dent (how?!?!) for $170/ea a few
weeks ago, $120/ea a month ago for one that had missing capacitors that
made it only work in a single CPU configuration.

As always don't be afraid to use best offer and if nothing suits you
just wait a week or so one will probably show up then.

Btw if you don't have all the D8/D16 boards you want I would buy them
new while you still can, they are going to stop selling/making them soon
if they haven't already.

As always feel free to ask any questions, and if you want something off
list just change the reply title to something else and add a note.

The BIOS (SPI) flash chip on the KGPE-D16 is socketed, so yes it is
removable. If you plan to swap it, I highly recommend a dedicated
DIP extractor for it! Something like this:

The main complaint that has been put to me by several vendors is the 1 GiB
footprint on the OpenBMC they've looked at. They'd like to see if a smaller
memory footprint system if possible. Also, since in at least one case they
are using NERF on the main x86 CPU, they'd like to have NERF on both the
main CPU and the BMC. It simplifies their life immensely to have a common
code base on both CPUs, and NERF makes that easy: I've tested NERF on small
ARM systems and it works fine, and it hardly needs 1 GiB to function.

I'll take a look. I suspect I am going to do a u-root based openbmc release
for contrast. The openbmc work I've seen to date does not impress. I don't
think using C++ and Boost was a good decision.

Yeah mine too but he didn't ask for a rec for that, I do agree that
physical hardware will always be better than qemu.
If cloud-dai wants a working board to start and has the cash I would
recommend the KGPE-D16 as it is the ultimate coreboot board with the
most features, and it is fast enough to be useful for other stuff like a
gaming pc or sane gentoo compile times, otherwise yeah the pcengines
APU1 is a good more affordable choice.

If you're just wanting to get a start on coreboot, with boards that are
currently sold, I personally like the PC Engines boards.

Yes it is pre-PSP, only $30.

The H8SCM-F has the (closed source) BMC, but removing the ROM chips
de-activates it, whereas the H8SCM doesn't have the BMC.

Dear All,

I hope I can be a contributor in coreboot so I plan buy a mainboard and use
tiano core to port it. Maybe ASUS P2B is a good idea but I have some question.
1. EC code doesn?t be included in coreboot, how can I include EC code into my
coreboot bin file? Use ME?
2. How can I get EC bin file from OEM bios and how can I get VBIOS from OEM
bios?
3. I have ME9, ME10 and ME11 firmware now, which ME I must use to integrate my
coreboot rom and EC
4. How can I use SF-100 to flash bios into mainboard, welding jumper?
5. Most coreboot projects don?t use tiano core to port them, but I am a OEM
BIOS engineer and I already use tiano architecture 7 years, so I hope I can use
tiano core to be payload, does everyone know which coreboot project does use
tiano core to be payload?

P.S. Please forgive my poor English, thank!!

Well no, I don?t think it could be, or the person was not well informed.

We are not a vendor, but a hosting/cloud company, so we rent servers or service
running on them, we do not ship them.
Also none of those servers with coreboot were available yet during 34C3.

Anyway, you are welcome to come to my talk at FOSDEM for more details ;-)
