Re: [Coworking] Re: Exchange program

2014-06-30 Thread Jacob Sayles
This is amazing. I love the idea and Office Nomads would love to
participate. This takes the beautiful cross-pollination that fuels the
Coworking Visa and kicks it up a notch or two. When I get back from
spending the summer in San Francisco, I plan to keep a guest room in my
house in Seattle for visitors like this.

I won't be available for the conference call later this month but I'll keep
an eye on the project and reach out later in the year. Nice work!

We have actually established a nonprofit arm at CO+HOOTS in Phoenix and
are looking to get donations of airfare and lodging to support coworking
both nationally and internationally. I am going to be starting a community
of advisors from cities around the country interested in being part of our
pilot program. In order to receive the exchange trip, we are going to ask
the coworkers who participate to also do a small pro bono project in their
field for an organization of need in the local community where they visit.
  :D

The local coworking spaces who participate would need to provide a desk
for the visiting coworkers, safe lodging (via a local hotel) with access to
public transportation and a host of people who are willing to show the
person around the area on their visit. There are still a lot of details to
figure out, but we are going to be hosting a Google Hangout at the end of
this month and I will post it here if any of you want to attend.

We have established the nonprofit with the intent of it being a national
program that ALL coworking spaces can benefit from for the coworking
exchange program-- NOT just PHX and CO+HOOTS.

If any of you are interested in being in the community of advisors, please
 let me know.

 Hi all,

I'm starting an exchange program between coworkers and I would like to
know your insights, ideas or suggestions.

It's a network for coworkers who want to exchange their homes + coworking
memberships, usually for short periods of time. So in other words a
coworker would be living in another city and working in a different
coworking space but without paying anything extra (no rent and no coworking
fee since they're already paying at home).

I think it would be enriching for both the person who travels to another
city/country and your coworking community. I was wondering if you as
coworking managers would aprove this kind of arrangement (someone else
 using a coworking membership).

Thanks a lot for your feedback!

 Carlos

[Coworking] Does anyone in Canada know how it works with CRA and claiming coworking costs + Business use of the home?

2014-06-30 Thread Aaron Cruikshank
Hi folks,

I get this question a lot from my clients and friends using coworking
spaces - if you have a desk at a coworking space AND you maintain a home
office (I use both about 50% of the time each), can you claim both expenses
at tax time?

Someone recently suggested to me that you might get in trouble with Revenue
Canada if you're claiming a coworking space AND business use of the home
deductions.

Anyone had to deal with this yet?

[Coworking] To what extent have you articulated your higher purpose?

2014-06-30 Thread Tony Bacigalupo
Hi coworkers!

I was thinking recently about an issue I've noticed locally and in other
regions, where friendly neighboring coworking spaces sometimes struggle to
develop good ways to collaborate. I believe the issue stems from a lack of
a well-articulated higher purpose that people from multiple spaces could
rally behind.

I think about this phenomenon also in the context of how we communicate
with prospective members. The majority of people who express interest in
New Work City are, at first, looking for workspace, and think we're in the
business of renting workspace. While we can use that as a starting point
for educating prospective members about the deeper values behind and
benefits of coworking, I'm thinking about how we can do a better job of
connecting with prospective members in a way that's about something more
meaningful.

Have any of you experienced something similar? Have you witnessed or
participated in the development of an ambition in your space or region that
gives coworking space managers something higher to shoot for than simply
getting enough members to pay the bills?

Cheers,
Tony

Hi Cheryl,

I'm looking for any websites that may have conference room application
templates or anyone wants to share what they use that would be helpful too.
Thanks

[Coworking] Made the leap and signed a lease! Advice?

2014-06-30 Thread Melissa Geissinger
We did it. WIMP signed a lease on a conservative 800 square foot space in
downtown Santa Rosa, California and WIMPspace will be opening soon. I have
run this meetup community for the last 3 years and change and we are over
400 members strong. The space is small but it's awesome. We're planning on
converting one of the closets into a phone booth and probably just using a
mobile partisan to separate the main space from a 4 person meeting table.
We may not even use a partisan (thoughts??).

So we anticipate having about 18 seats. Not sure yet as we haven't gotten
furniture yet so it's a little hard to visualize at this stage. We also
plan on hosting our (free) events, and (paid) workshops and classes. What
I'm finding is that there is actually a demand for the public to learn web
design and social media basic skills (which is what the core of our
membership specializes in) so we'll probably host a mixture of beginner
level as well as expert level classes.

Does anyone here have experience running a similar business model? Any tips
on logistics or projections for the size of our operation?

Also wondering what you all use for keeping track of your membership
subscriptions.

Thanks all!
