[css-d] where did I go wrong?

2006-08-28 Thread Laurie Landry
I was customizing this stylesheet, here:

http://www.lmlweb.com/angela/wp-content/themes/random-image/style.css

for this site:

http://angela.lmlweb.com

and while it works in Firefox, I tested this in IE, and it completely broke.

I'm clueless as to where I could have gone wrong, and would appreciate a
pair of fresh eyes to tell me what I could have done wrong.

Thanks.

Micky was on the money & I can confirm this is the culprit. Modifying
your body rule to the following:

html, body {
padding:0px;
margin:0px;
font:10px Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;
color:#00;
height: 100%;
}

and viewing in Firefox through an ie tab resolves the issue. Like Micky
I didn't take an in-depth look at your code, but is there any particular
reason you are using height:100% on the body? If the answer is no then
remove that also, since, unless you're experimenting with sticky footers
or vertical/horizontal centering, it's generally not required. Also,
10px for a body rule is rather small, and just as a FYI, the following
might prove an interesting read if you have the time.

A little tip for the future:
You can easily catch that kind of little mistakes in Firefox.
Open the Error Console (or JS console, from the Tools menu), Clear it
(as it probably contains lots of stuff).
Reload your page. It will tell you all the rules/rule blocks that
Firefox doesn't accept.

Yes :-)

IE7 treats 'height' and 'width' correctly, so the IE6 hack will become a
problem.

In cases like yours where you're using only one IE-only stylesheet for
all IE/win versions, you'll have to use the '* html' hack as part of the
selector-chain for declarations you don't want IE7 to see / act on.

Depending on how many IE-only styles you need, one or more IE-only
stylesheets may be a complete waste of space and download-time. A few '*
html' fixes for IE6 and older versions in the ordinary stylesheet, may
be all that's needed.

Yes, that'll normally achieve centering in those old browsers.

Maybe - probably.
Your latest update works fine at my end, so now I'm only missing the
'Gray's Creek Designs' in that scenario. Others may miss it too.

Generally: some CSS capable screen readers may, or may not, treat pages
like a paranoid site-tester - now or in the future. Most
"replacement-tricks" - and other tricks for that matter, should
therefore only be used where one is sure they won't hurt either way.

> I'm also a little confused about the "zoom" setting. I have my text

> users?

No! We Opera users have all the tools we need in the browser. All we ask
is that web designers don't prevent these tools from working.
When it comes to font sizes the formula is: what works for free
font-resizing in IE/win, will also work for Opera.

As an example: Your "font-size: 80%/1.4", and all other font sizes on
the web, have to pass through my regular preference of 'minimum font
size: 14px' at my end whether you, and other designers, like it or not.
The same preference is set in Firefox and Safari btw.

Your pages turn out really fine, because you don't play around with
'down and then up sizing of font sizes'.

It's a lot worse when someone starts with a 'font-size: 62.5%' on body,
and sizes up to 1.6em on text later in.
That'll result in 'font-size: 14px × 1.6' in my Opera and Firefox, and
although that is a pretty readable size, it may be more than many weak
designs can handle. No problems with yours.

If the above isn't confusing enough, then this article may help you over
the edge... :-)

...and lead you into a part of accessibility/usability that is often
ignored by web designers.
The essence is: not only blind people need accessible/usable/readable
web sites.

Georg

Hi Marcelo,

Just quickly looking-over you code, I see this as a potential prob:

html, body, form, fieldset, select, a, input{
padding:0px;
margin:0px;
font:10px Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;

I am thinking height:100%; could be causing IE to do weird things.

Maybe? Maybe not?

I only looked over your code quickly, so I could be missing the real
problem.

Good luck,

I added a secondary set of main navigation links at the bottom of the

I haven't tackled the issues with those browsers as posted earlier

[css-d] Fixed back to top tab at bottom of screen

2006-08-28 Thread Tady Walsh
Hi there,

I was on a website (http://home.skysports.com) which has a "back to top" tab
fixed at the bottom right of the browser window (you may have to access a
long article to see it. Just click on anything...), no jumping, no scroll
issues, nothing!!!

I want to use this style on a site I'm working on and I cannot for the life
of me decipher how they have achieved this.

Anyone out there got any ideas or urls you can point me to..? I looked at as
many of the articles on footers and bottom aligned elements as I can find,
but nothing is close to the rigidity and yet fluidity of this element.

Thanks for your help,

2006-08-28 Thread Andy Mosmiller
Thanks all for checking out my site, particularly ~davidLaakso for the
screen captures. That rocks! I'm quite pleased that my site seems to
be working correctly in almost everything without having had to test it
first. Of course there are a few problems. I have uploaded those
screens to my site temporarily and have posted comments under each below
so that I can get some feedback if possible.

IE 7 for Windows
http://www.themosmillers.org/Andy/temp/grayscreekdesigns/screencapture/I
E7-1280x800.png

It is hard to tell unless you worked on the site, but I am pretty sure
that IE 7 is setting the height of the content to exactly 300px as
specified in my IE conditional stylesheet (which of course acts as a
min-height for current versions.) Have people figured out how to tackle
this looming problem yet for when people start using this browser?

--
IE 5.5 for Windows (1280x800) - 5.0 looks the same
http://www.themosmillers.org/Andy/temp/grayscreekdesigns/screencapture/I
E55-1280x800.png

Is this a case of needing to assign a "text-align" value of center on
the body, then canceling it out in on the container?

--
IE 5.2 for Mac (1280x800) - works fine
http://www.themosmillers.org/Andy/temp/grayscreekdesigns/screencapture/I
E52-Mac-1280x800.png

Just a reference, as I am confused by the next screenshot...

--
IE 5.2 for Mac (800x600) - does not
http://www.themosmillers.org/Andy/temp/grayscreekdesigns/screencapture/I
E52-Mac-800x600.png

Why would this break only at 800x600? Does anyone know how to fix this
issue, or even know what is happening?

Ok, that's it for the screens. I have a couple other questions as
well...

It has been pointed out that my links don't work if images are off and
css on. I thought that users of this variety filled a similar role as
the jackalope, unicorn, or esquilax, but if they do exist, I'd like to
accommodate. The thing is, how do I do that without compromising the
look? I do have the idea to re-post text links down at the bottom above
the copyright, which would serve a nice dual purpose. Good enough?

I'm also a little confused about the "zoom" setting. I have my text set
to 80% to achieve the look that felt right. I know that Opera has a
zoom feature, but I don't know how these two are linked. Is there
something I need to know to make for easier viewing for Opera users?

Alright, that'll do it. Thanks again,

Andy

[css-d] Firefox Ignoring Link Styles

2006-08-28 Thread Ryan Keefer
Hey all, have you all ever experienced problems with Firefox (1.5 on
both PC & Mac) ignoring link styles?

I've run into this twice now, one using an image and just now with a
text link.

The current one is just this:

#breadcrumb a,
#breadcrumb a:link,
#breadcrumb a:visted
{
text-decoration: none;
font: 9px Lucida Sans Unicode, Lucida Grande, sans-serif;
color: #696969;
background-color: #FFF;
}

#breadcrumb a:hover
{
text-decoration: underline;
}

Safari and IE 6 both work as expected. Firefox shows the breadcrumb
links as purple and underlined (default visited link style).

Thanks,
Ryan

Hi,

I'm sorry that I don't have time to check this but it may be that the
browser scroll bars are appearing and therefore your content seems to
move to the left.

Try adding this declaration to your stylesheet:

html {
border-bottom: 1px;
height: 100%;
}

[css-d] curious FF problem (bug?)

2006-08-28 Thread r paterso
this is my first post to the list so please forgive any etiquette gaffes.

i have noticed a curious problem with FF 1.5.0.6 on my (inherited) intranet
i have page templates that use fixed-width (595 px)tables for layout and CSS
for styling.

it seems that while page elements (banner, containing wrapper, etc.) remain
static on the screen in IE, they shift around in FF, that is, everything
shifts slightly to the left on some pages. i fully expect it is a problem
in my CSS coding, but the cuious thing is, the shift only happens when, for
example, a list reached more than 9 items, or a table had more than 9 rows.

i solved the unordered list problem by tweaking the margin: values (mostly
reducing them to 0) ... the table problem remains unresolved. i can't
provide a link since it's a closed intranet, so i'll include the offending
code -- or where i suspect the problem might be. forgive the length. i hope
it makes enough sense that someone can help me determine the problem. i
realize, to that you may need two code samples to compare, in order to see
the problem, so I shall include a 2nd, below the first then the CSS.

Thanks
Robert Paterson

[css-d] problem printing background image in IE

2006-08-28 Thread Bill Walton
I need to print a page that has a background image with text placed in specific
locations wrt the image. Both the image and the locations for the text items
(identified by CSS id's) are specified in a stylesheet. The background image
is a 300dpi scan of an 8.5" x 11" paper form.

In Firefox, it prints out looking like the same form it was scanned from.
Exactly what I need. In IE, only a small portion of the top left section of
the page prints and that portion is enlarged to fill the page. It looks like
IE needs to be told something about the size or resolution of the image,
because the portion of the image IE is printing is scaled right (i.e., taller
than it is wide). That's just speculation on my part, though. Does anybody
have any ideas?

Thanks,
Bill

can you supply a url?

You may want to play with your image so that it sits lower. Or play
with padding on list items.

Is there a way to make the image be on the same level or centered with
the text? Bullets appear as superscript.

If your question has to do with CSS, then you would probably want to set
the links in both columns as vertical lists. See the three /simple/
vertical lists at the top of this
page for ways to do this.

If your question has to do with Information Architecture (organization),
then it depends on the content of your site, and what you hope to
accomplish. For example, the left column might contain the navigation to
the /internal/ pages of your site. And the right column might contain
links to /external/ resources that point to sites on the Web that
pertain in some way to the content of your site

[css-d] 3 column links

2006-08-28 Thread Eddie Shaffer

Hi All,
1st post. A newbie. I'm working on a 3 column layout and was wondering what
kind of links go on the left side of the main content (center) column and
what kind of links go on the right side of the main content (center) column.
In other words the left column would have links representing what and the
right column would have links representing what?

Thank you.

Re: [css-d] FF IE help floats

Leora Waldman wrote:

> in IE everything lines up the way I want - the problem is in FF

Well, you can trust Firefox on this one. IE6 is wrong, regardless of the
fact that it looks the way you want. You're experiencing a bunch of IE-bugs.

Floats shall *not* go higher than the top of the last, previous, float
in the source-code, so your floated homebox / homebox2 shall line up
with the top of the last float on the left side. That's exactly where
Firefox, Opera, and all other standard-compliant browsers, position it.

This line-up problem can be solved in many ways, but since you probably
want all browsers to use one set of declarations and IE6 is a bit behind
when it comes to standards, the following 'all-float' construction will
be most stable.

Wrap all 4 images on the left in a div, style that div as a left-float,
and "un-float" and restyle those images...

#banners {float: left; width: 193px;}
#banners img {margin-top: 7px;}

This will make those images line up exactly as before, but now in a
floated block instead of as individual floats.

Then restyle .content as a right-float...

.content {
width: 570px;
margin-left: 0;
float: right;
padding:  7px 7px 0 0;
}

...and add...

.homebox {display: inline;}

...to "kill" the 'margin-doubling on floats' bug in IE6.

The above will be rendered identically by Firefox, IE6, Opera, and
probably every standard-aware browser out here.

Conclusion:
- Never trust IE6 to do anything right (even though it does at times).
- Never design for/in IE6 - ever. Just "kill" its bugs.
- Firefox is right most of the time - but not always. If in doubt: get
second opinion from other non-IE/non-Gecko browsers.

Georg

[css-d] IE Absolute Position Problem

2006-08-28 Thread Robbert van Andel
Sorry if this is a repeat. I sent this last night, but never saw it arrive.

I'm putting together a webpage that will allow someone to print out a form
and I'm using a series of absolutely positioned divisions to display the
information. I spent many hours positioning these divisions using Firefox
and when I tested it in IE nothing shows up. When I changed the position
setting to relative, everything appears but of course it's not where I want
it. I thought it might be a problem with invalid HTML but the site
validates according to the validator at the W3's website. Can anyone tell
me what I'm doing wrong? Or better yet, what I need to do to make this work
in IE?

I've included the source code at http://drloganbill.com/test/sample.htm

Thank you,

Robbert van Andel

[css-d] FF IE help floats

2006-08-28 Thread Leora Waldman
I am having trouble using floats in FF. In IE they work fine. I have a page
with images lined up (floated) on the left side of the page. On the right I
have a big image and underneath that I have two "homeboxes" I want the home
boxes to line up next to each other right underneath the big image. I
therefore floated each homebox to the right. The problem is that in FF this
leaves a big white space that i don't need. The problem seems to be in the
float. When I remove it, one homebox lines up correctly but the other goes
underneath it, which is not what i want. I want it besides it.

See http://www.excellenceweb.com/besr/he/pages/home.php

in IE everything lines up the way I want - the problem is in FF

the code I use for the homebox is

.homebox {

padding: 7px 0px 0px 0px;
width: 278px;
min-height: 278px;
margin-left: 3px;
margin-right: 3px;
float: right;
}

Thanks a lot,

Leo
