Re: [css-d] expert system for CSS?

2007-02-15 Thread Jan Brasna
 1) does anyone have an idea of how to approach learning CSS other
than just learning the tags and learning case by case how browsers
 react in different ways?

I think nowadays there are traditional methods as various books,
courses and workshops that can probably teach the best methods of
avoiding such situations and erratic behavior:

http://www.digital-web.com/types/book_reviews/
http://www.webteacher.ws/labels/book%20review.html
http://www.amazon.com/Pro-CSS-Techniques-Jeff-Croft/sim/159059732X/1/ref=pd_sexpl_esi/105-7846670-4914826

http://www.d.umn.edu/itss/support/Training/Online/webdesign/events.html

You can also find many CSS design patterns as:

http://www.smashingmagazine.com/2007/01/19/53-css-techniques-you-couldnt-live-without/

 2) what do people think of trying to encode all this data / case
studies on this list into some sort of expert system

Most of the information is stored decentralized with only lists to
summarize that. To have an idea how it looks like have a look at:

why this is not only an accessibility question.

It's more a reminder than anything else. The validator (a syntax

inheritance in the particular document so it advises you to add more
maybe even duplicate values to just satisfy its weird guesswork.

Could you expand on this, or link to an article that explains why this
works? I'm not familiar with the '?' suffix (unless we're using PHP, of
 course). Is it standard?

Brett, ? is not a suffix. It's a query-string separator, see
appropriate RFCs on this. It's the same as the PHP mentioned by you -
the file requested is the style.css with the parameter. However, as
long as it's just a vanilla CSS, the parameter is simply discarded. For
the server. Not for the client - different parameter, different cache,
different request. So when you change the parameter, the browser
requests the fresh version.

Umm, sorry for saying that Marc, but yes, you should do it again. What
you sent is just a bunch of positioned sliced pieces of images. It's
merely table based layout, made of absolutely positioned pieces like
#Table_01, #Base-01_, ..., #Base-28_, #Right_Spacer etc. ...

This is not the way to do it, I'm afraid you should return back to

[css-d] WebKit and button/submit styling

2006-02-05 Thread Jan Brasna
Bon jour,

I just noticed that the latest WebKit (Safari nightly) builds have a
different rendering of styled submit button elements - Safari used to
have a different approach to the styling of form components and despite
the CSS it used the default system Aqua GUI components. Now, in the
latest nightly builds, it looks like Safari is accepting the CSS styling
of those elements.

Can anyone confirm this?

It may be the default rendering from 2.0.4+ ...

(I personally prefer the former clean Aqua behavior.)

Re: [css-d] Inline styles and the people who hate them.

2006-02-02 Thread Jan Brasna
to open the HTML (actually .JSP) file, find the element in question, grab
the class name, then open the associated CSS doc, search for the class name
and finally make the change. (And of course, the requests are seldom so
simple, which means the fixes tend to involve a lot more scrolling around
inside a multi-thousand-line doc looking for a CSS value.)

You shlould have considered using something like Web Inspector
(http://webkit.opendarwin.org/blog/?p=41) (or DOM Inspector and many
other plugins).

So my current consideration is to move the specific positioning information
back into inline styling. Positioning that is repeated frequently on one
page will be moved to the header (internal). And, naturally, globally-used
styles will remain in the blessed external CSS docs.

Since I lose then the ability to cascade and inherit properties I'd go
with some .css files modularity. One can even have a .css for each
separate page or set of typical pages, but I'd avoid inline styling if
possible and reasonable.

[css-d] Safari missing headings

2006-01-27 Thread Jan Brasna
Hi folks,

has anyone of you recently noticed that the few recent Safari versions
do occasionally cut off headings of web sites?

The latest WebKit nightlies do seem fine though.

Example:
http://tmp.alphanumeric.cz/Image53.png

(left: latest stable; right: latest nightly)

PS: It looks like the nightly builds of WebKit work pretty much well
with Saft, it was an issue some time ago IIRC, that's a good news.

Re: [css-d] Safari missing headings

2006-01-27 Thread Jan Brasna
 Removing those

That's unlikely, Saft is a must for serious work. Some other (Stand,
WebDev) were removed though.

deleting the com.apple.Safari.plist and everything worked fine again.

D'oh, I should have checked the preflists, app cache etc. prior to
reporting it. Since the versions have separate namespaces, it might be
this issue. I'll undergo the cure ASAP, thanks for the tip, Philippe!

Re: [css-d] Question about EM's

2005-12-19 Thread Jan Brasna
The whole idea of using ems would seem to me to favor spawning horizontal
scrollbars to keep text columns at a readable proportion.

I understand it exactly the same way; em-sizing acts very similar to
Opera's overall zoom (excluding px sized items like images and/or
backgrounds), achieved only by bumping up the text size.

where on some pages the menu is missing. Eg. if I enter
http://www.zbiroh.com/sluzby/ the menu isn't there. If I refresh it, it
appears back. XHTML and CSS are valid, others browsers and pages look
fine. Have you ever seen this?

Thanks,
Jan

Jan, can you test whether the problem still exists when you delete
overflow: auto, just to test if it is related to overflow?

Thanks Ingo, but no effect.

And it seems to happen on pages which don't show a vertical scrollbar only

There are many pages shorter, many longer, but only this one have that
issue.

IE 6 fine
Safari 2.0 and 1.2.4 fine
Camino 0.8.4 fine, but 0.8.2 does it too
FF 1.0 OSX the same error

Vertical-align is for table-cell elements, you can use absolute
positioning and bottom: 0 for this effect.

Re: [css-d] browser hack @import - the second

2005-05-19 Thread Jan Brasna
What are you thinking about the construction at all?
A bit overkill IMO. just link two stylesheets, eg. basic.css (even for
old ones vith color definitions etc.) and position.css, which will
contain few @import lines, based on the link I posted. I think it's
better than having all this mess in HTML...

Do I need a special section for Safari?
No.

IMNSHO not. I've never noticed any difference. There may by only
rendering differencies due to different fonts and UI/XUL widgets.

Re: [css-d] -999em safe?

2005-05-10 Thread Jan Brasna
Instead of 'display: none' because this is not read by the screen
readers, which (in error) accept the screen media type, even when they
shouldn't.

So you don't hide the text (skip links, image replacement... mostly
accessibility tools), you just position it offscreen.

Re: [css-d] Re: -999em safe?

2005-05-10 Thread Jan Brasna
No, that isn't an error. They are _screen_ readers, not aural
browsers.
Really? OK. (I expected them to behave as aural devices, my bad)
Of course most (all?) image replacement techniques still fall over
with the css-on/images-off combination.
Not neccessarily, I'm using Pixy's IR, DIR and Dynatext, which are quite
bulletproof.

[css-d] -999em safe?

2005-05-09 Thread Jan Brasna
Hi all,
I'm just curious about using -999em for some text hiding or off-screen
positioning -- isn't it a bit rought for the browser to count similar
distances from the viewport? Especially on some old and slow machines?

Thanks for opinions, I don't see much into the browser implementation...

Re: [css-d] vertical alignment of images used as bullets

2005-05-05 Thread Jan Brasna
Is there a way to vertically align the text following the image to the
middle of the image or vice versa?
Yes, don't use list-style-*, use backgound-image + padding and you'll
have more positioning possibilities.
