even at the expense of tearing the nation apart and a split. Unity is a
recipe for no decision." Foreign Minister Shlomo Ben-Ami, on the eve of
the talks last Sunday in Egypt's Taba resort in Sinai

:: WAQF CONTINUES TEMPLE MOUNT DESTRUCTION: Desecration of the Temple
Mount by the Moslem Waqf continues, with the permission of Prime Minister
Barak -- although he maintains that he has issued an order to stop it.
Archaeologist Dr. Gabi Barkai, of the Committee to Prevent Destruction on
the Temple Mount, told ARUTZ-7 that over the course of this past Sabbath
[Jan 20], "We received reports that a tractor worked throughout the
Sabbath, and that a 50-meter [55 yards] long trench was dug leading out of
the southern entrance of the Dome of the Rock. This is a tremendous
violation of the status quo -- the ancient floor, which has not been
touched for hundreds of years, has been dug up. All the earthmoving works
that the Waqf has carried out until now were on the southern and
southeastern areas of the Mount, which are a bit lower down, but yesterday
for the first time they started digging up the upper level of the Temple
Mount -- where the Holy Temple itself stood, according to all
archaeologists and rabbis." Last week, Prime Minister Barak issued permits
for Waqf construction on the Mount, against the recommendations of
Attorney-General Elyakim Rubenstein, the police, and the Antiquities
Authority. Barak said last Sunday that he had ordered Public Security
Minister Shlomo Ben-Ami to close off the entrance through which the Waqf
equipment enters the Mount. Dr. Barkai said, "This is simply not true --
all the works have been done, as far as we know, with his approval
Heavy equipment and trucks are going in and out of the northern gates
around the Mount, and 150 tons of dirt have been removed in the past
weeks." HA'ARETZ reported that the Waqf had announced that it would halt
all construction on the Mount on Sunday.

Fresh eye-witness accounts indicate the Muslim Waqf has added a new tunnel
accessing the ancient Hulda Gates corridor to its growing list of
"archaeological crimes" on the Temple Mount. The tunnel reportedly runs
underground from below the Al Aqsa mosque to the Hulda Gates area, which
dates back to the Second Temple era. Although Israeli police denied the
reports, journalists and others who saw the new tunnel first-hand said it
includes electric lighting and an observation pit with an iron grille in
the floor through which can be seen remnants of an old floor.

:: SUPREME MOSLEM COUNCIL: TEMPLE STOOD ON TEMPLE MOUNT: Although the most
recent Moslem "spin" is that there is no Jewish connection to the Temple
Mount, the Supreme Moslem Council in Jerusalem wrote in 1930 that the
site's identification with the First Temple is "beyond dispute." Etgar
Lefkovits wrote in THE JERUSALEM POST Friday that the Council -- the
supreme Moslem body appointed by the British to administer Moslem and Waqf
affairs in mandatory Palestine -- published an English-language tourist
guide that states, "The site is one of the oldest in the world. Its
sanctity dates from the earliest times. Its identity with the site of
Solomon's Temple is beyond dispute. This, too, is the spot, according to
universal belief, on which David built there an altar unto the Lord, and
offered burnt offerings and peace offerings." The PA/PLO Mufti Ikrima
Sabri on Friday denied the report stating it was taken out of context.
Sabri says the entire area, including the Western Wall, belongs to Islam.
He denies that there ever was a Temple there and says the Jews have no
historic connection to Jerusalem.

:: THE MURDERS CONTINUE: In the latest instance of Israelis being brutally
murdered in Palestinian areas, masked Arab gunmen grabbed two owners of a
Tel Aviv restaurant who were shopping in PA/PLO-controlled Tulkarm on
Tuesday

Air Force: Desert Storm - My War Too
~~
Ed: Interesting account from a guy behind the scenes. A reminder, that it
takes all kinds of skilled troops to move our armadas to perform their combat
mission. THANK YOU to all you dedicated folks behind the scenes that make
things happen from the Zman.
*

By John E. Booth

My Desert Shield/Storm experience was in the USAF, starting in Alaska with
the Alaskan Air Command asking for, and then denying, volunteers for the
buildup. It was due, they said, to duty commitments within the Alaskan
Theatre (somebody, so the scuttlebutt went, was worried our new found buddies
in Russia or CHICOM's might be brazen enough to jump our ass or to pull
something stupid while we were focused on other issues).

I had heard (mind you we were in the midst of the coldest winter on record at
the time) that over 3,000 USAF folks volunteered. I PCS'd to the UK during
the startup of the conflict, and began my introduction to 96 hour shifts,
moving 300 aircraft (150 every 6 hours) every 12 hours. I still cannot fathom
how the hell we managed it even to this day.

There was a "pipeline" of planes (mostly C130's) from Gander, to Iceland,
through Shanwick, to us, then downward through (initially) France and onward,
eventually retracing their paths backwards. My main job in life was what we
call diplomatic clearances, ensuring the flight plan, personnel, equipment,
food, (wounded personnel on the return trip), and aircraft were properly
documented, signed, sealed, and then, if (very big if) the French ATC
controllers weren't on their normal unannounced strikes, delivered at exactly
5 minutes prior to, and no later than, 5 minutes after their "slot times".

No acknowledgement from the French, you don't fly. Period. You blow your
times, too bad. To put this in better perspective, the official International
Civil Aviation Organization publications that deal with this issue covers
every signatory on the planet (kind of like the UN, or NATO). The average
amount of pages (rules restrictions, do's and don'ts' to get through each
countries airspace and avoid an "international incident") devoted per country
run normally about 5 to 6 pages.

France? Well, let's just say anywhere from 75 to 80 pages. I had to work
clearances for every country these aircraft passed through, and then bring
them all back the same way, working yet an entirely new set of clearances for
the return leg. One clearance per airplane. I was one typing, calling,
transmitting, receiving, posting, distributing, and briefing fool.

Most aircrews were realistic about the process. One incident that comes to
mind involved a flight of Portuguese A4's. They refused to wait for
clearances, took off without approval (fully armed and fueled), and got stuck
in the racetrack by the French (circling over the Channel). Back they came 6
hours later, on fumes.

Naturally, let's blame the Base Ops guy where he took off from (oh yes,
that's me). Needless to say, they were pissed... As far as Iraq is concerned,
we need to stop playing around with this piss ant and squash his ass, Patton
style.

I'm growing weary of our PC environment (oops, let's not piss off our Middle
East "friends" or violate some political agenda).

Do you think we're suffering from security paranoia?

I was on Okinawa for three years (97 - 00), and I feel the security issues
are handled with way too much crisis management. If folks were prepared all
year long, and followed the basic guidelines like they're supposed to do in
the first place, we wouldn't be playing the "failure to plan on my part
constitutes an emergency on your part" game.

The LAV - Can it Roll-On and Off a C130 Combat Ready?

Ed.: Interesting insight from people who attended some trials...maybe a bit
of false advertising? Standing by for comments.

Multiple Sources

The Interim Brigades are supposed to be equipped with a C-130 deployable
vehicle, capable of rolling of the aircraft in combat ready configuration.
The following info may provide more insights:

* If we want to use C-130s, it probably implies that we plan to use some sort
of Forward Landing Strips (dirt, unimproved, poorly paved, etc.)

* USAF's answer to max ACL for C-130 ops on a FLS is 32,000 pounds (16 tons).
The improved surface runway ACL is something like 42,000 pounds. The last
time the USAF waived this restriction was Desert Storm, and then only for
very limited reasons. It is believed that they are currently using these
restrictions in the Balkans.

* If a LAV, empty, weighs 19 tons, how can it land on a FLS with fuel,

U.S. Forces placed on Alert -- Patriot Anti-missile Battery deployed to Israel
~
Ed.: Signal for a real crisis or overreaction? From: Middle East Newsline
SPECIAL TO WORLD TRIBUNE.COM -- January 26, 2001
***

WASHINGTON - The United States has sent a Patriot anti-missile defense
battery to Israel amid heightened concerns of a Middle East war.

Pentagon sources said the heightened tension in the Middle East prompted a
decision to place on alert U.S. forces in Germany and Italy. They said
Washington has been concerned about an Iraqi attack on Israel amid reports
that several Iraqi divisions have moved close to the Syrian border.

The San Antonio Express-News published a copy of a U.S. military order that
on Jan. 11 raised the alert status of U.S. forces from Threatcon Bravo to
Alpha. Alpha is a heightened alert of a terrorist attack.

"Recent intelligence indicates that an increased or more predictable threat
exists, thus warranting the Threatcon change," the U.S. military order read.

Pentagon officials said the Patriot missile brigade will participate in an
exercise in Israel scheduled for Feb. 8. The exercise will last 15 days.

The exercise, called "Juniper Cobra," will include about 400 members of the
69th Air Defense Artillery Brigade based near Frankfurt, Germany. A Patriot
missile battery and personnel are expected to arrive by ship on Feb. 4 and
join Patriot batteries already deployed in the Jewish state.

"It is a training event to sustain interoperability between the U.S. Army and
the Israeli defense forces," U.S. Army spokesman Maj. Tom Collins said.

In December, Lockheed Martin was awarded a $212 million contract to produce
an upgraded Patriot.

Desert Storm Remembered

Ed.: More Desert Storm observations, one from the enlisted, another from the
officer perspective.
I invite more input from other "Desert Stormers" out there.

Jimmy Duncan, formerly 82nd Airborne

I could not agree more with your Desert Storm comments.

America has the image of the 82nd Airborne at KKMC with clean uniforms and
a-rations everyday, and Stormin Norman as almost a Napoleonic figure.

In reality most of us were so far out in the Desert that it was unbelievable.

I recall at 1st Brigade operations center where we ate MRE's for the first 71
days after arrival and then finally receiving some hot rations, once a week
thereafter.

We had ONE set of desert camouflage and I remember no desert boots.

My commo shop had one tent and my Major and a Master Sergeant took it for
themselves. So much for leading by example! I and all the other guys slept on
the desert floor.

We were given a new uniform to come home in -- just to look mean and combat
ready.

And did not Stormin Norman raise hell with General Franks for not keeping his
Division on the move throughout the second night of the War? I do not know if
this was good or bad, but Franks retired with 4 Stars, didn't he?

And another thing about Desert Storm was the awards game...I got 2 ARCOMS but
I know plenty of people who did not do anything and got Bronze Stars.

I believe the majority of casualties was from friendly fire.

And one more thing, Dick Cheney and George Bush Sr. started the draw down
before the war and the base closings! Maybe we shouldn't celebrate the new
guys too early.

Still Fighting Desert Storm

By Gary R. Stahlhut, Gulf War Vet

Ten years ago, the air attacks on Iraq had begun and I was preparing my
soldiers for the invasion of Iraq that was to follow. 4 1/2 weeks later we
were 80 miles from Baghdad and were given the order to halt.

Later that night a Reuters reporter was escorted into my command post
(escorted by an Army public affairs officer) to talk with us and see how we
felt about not attacking all the way to Baghdad. He asked me when I knew that
Iraq had lost the war and what we should do now that Iraq was beaten.

I told him that Iraq lost the war in the first 6 hours when they could not
stop us from systematically destroying the infrastructure of the country from
the air. I was also very candid about how we felt when we were told to stop.

Here are my exact words: "Now that the Iraqi Republican Guard has been
defeated, we need to keep going and occupy Baghdad. We need to hold a victory
parade in Baghdad to show the Iraqis and any Arabs who support Saddam
Hussein, that Saddam is defeated. If we don't do this, Saddam will look like
he held off the world and will stay in power, and we will be screwing with

CNBC News Transcripts
SHOW: RIVERA LIVE (9:00 PM ET)
January 30, 2001, Tuesday

LENGTH: 1992 words

HEADLINE: CLINTON'S PARDONING OF MARC RICH

ANCHORS: GERALDO RIVERA

REPORTERS: PETE WILLIAMS

BODY:

Representative DAN BURTON (Republican, Government Reform
Chairman): (From "The News with Brian Williams"; MSNBC) That Marc
Rich should never have been pardoned. The Democrats, when they
were in control of the House back in the early '90s, were
investigating--they--they even sent people over to investigate
into Switzerland. They said he should have been brought back to
stand trial. The man was involved in trading with Iran when we
had our hostages held over there during the Carter
administration. He evaded taxes--$ 48 million in income taxes.
He's on the six most wanted list of international criminals, and
for Bill Clinton to pardon him is just unbelievable. Whether or
not Hillary Clinton had any--anything to do with the pardon I
don't know. But it certainly should not have happened.

GERALDO RIVERA, host: very time I see Dan Burton, he gives me
the willies. I can't...

Mr. CHRIS DARDEN (Former Prosecutor): Yeah, me too.

RIVERA: I can't get over the image of him shooting that melon in
his back yard to prove that the--Hillary's friend--What was his
name? The White House aide who killed himself?

Professor ALAN DERSHOWITZ (Law Professor, Harvard University):
Foster. Foster.

RIVERA: Who is it?

Prof. DERSHOWITZ: Vince Foster.

Mr. DAN PETROCELLI (Trial Attorney): Vince Foster, right.

RIVERA: That he was--it really was murder, not a--he's a
card-carrying Clinton hater, Congressman Burton is. He can't let
go of the ex-president. But let's face it, ladies and gentlemen,
whether you love the guy or hate the guy, Bill Clinton certainly
handed all of his longtime enemies a whole batch of new
ammunition on his very last day in office. The outgoing 42nd
president's 11th hour pardon of fugitive financier Marc Rich
continues to draw incredible heat, much of it deserved, with some
on Capitol Hill now calling for hearings into the matter. I don't
know about that. But there are certainly questions, and as NBC's
Pete Williams reports, the controversy over this one pardon is
raising questions about the constitutional power that allowed it
to be granted in the first place.

PETE WILLIAMS reporting:

It's not the picture of the usual applicant for a pardon, a
multimillionaire living in exile in Switzerland hitting the ski
slopes. But Marc Rich, an international fugitive, got his pardon
with just a few hours left in the Clinton presidency, the
17-year-old criminal charges now dropped of skirting oil price
controls to evade nearly $ 50 million in federal taxes and to
illegally buying oil from Iran while it was holding Americans
hostage.

Mr. Clinton's pardon stunned federal prosecutors, and some
Republicans in Congress are calling for hearings, troubled by
disclosures that Rich's ex-wife, who joined in calling for the
pardon, has given nearly a million dollars to Democratic causes.
But President Bush says while he finds it troubling, he'll do
nothing to challenge the last-minute pardon by Mr. Clinton.

President GEORGE W. BUSH: He had the right to do so, to make that
decision, and he did, and I'm going to protect that privilege not
only for me but for future presidents as well.

WILLIAMS: The pardon power comes directly from the Constitution.
For any federal crime, the president can forgive anyone
completely or shorten the prison sentence. While most pardons are
given to people after they've served time and turned their lives
around, a pardon can come anytime after a crime is committed,
even before indictment or trial, as, for example, when President
Ford pardoned Richard Nixon for Watergate. Constitutional
scholars say it's one of the rare powers that's the president's
alone, with no checks or balances.

Professor IRA ROBBINS (American University Law School): When the
president issues a pardon, it is according to his sole
discretion. There aren't any standards for it; there isn't any
review of it.

WILLIAMS: A power as old as the republic, now prompting new
questions about whether to rein it in.

Pete Williams, NBC News, Washington.

RIVERA: Pete, thanks. Professor Alan Dershowitz, I know and we
state for the record that I--at some level and for some matters
you represented Marc Rich at some time, nothing to having to do
with the pardon.

Prof. DERSHOWITZ: Right.

RIVERA: But here's the legal question I pose to you. In this
country, if you have a private country club, you can accept or
reject a member absolutely. You have absolutely no limits as long
as your reasons are legal, and they're not because of race,
color, creed or religion. Is th--is that what a pardon is? Can a
president do it

In just four days now, Retired General and accused
war criminal Ariel Sharon becomes the Prime Minister
of the Jewish State of Israel:

 WAITING FOR SHARON

  By Graham Usher*

"They believe a Sharon victory will be a boon for their cause.
'He will expose the true face of Israel,' says an activist
in Yasir Arafat's Fatah movement in Nablus, 'and force the
world, including the US, to address its real responsibilities
to the peace process... The difference in the appraisal of a
Sharon victory is not the only rift between the leaders and
  the led in Palestinian society."

"The Palestinians could hardly be in worse shape to confront
the 'Sharon era.' And eighteen years after he was forced to
resign from office because of Sabra and Shatila -- and 16 to
20 points ahead in the polls -- Sharon could hardly be in
  better shape."

[Ramallah and Gaza]: Among Palestinians in the occupied territories, the prospect
that Ariel Sharon will be Israel's next prime minister is met with a shrug
of the shoulders. The indifference is not from ignorance.
Palestinians know well Sharon's history. They have always been the victims
of it.

Leading the Israeli army's "southern command," Sharon ruthlessly crushed the
Palestinian resistance in what was then the newly occupied Gaza Strip in the
early 1970s. And of course it was Sharon, as Israel's defense minister, who
was held "indirectly responsible" (by an independent Israeli Commission of
Inquiry) for the massacre of
about 2,000 Palestinians at Beirut's Sabra and Shatila refugee camps during
Israel's 1982 invasion of Lebanon. The commission recommended that Sharon "draw
the appropriate personal conclusions" and resign from his post as defense minister.

Rather, the Palestinians' apathy is explained by the comparison they make between
Sharon and Israel's present prime minister. "By his actions, Ehud Barak has
erased any difference between the two men in the Palestinian perception," says
Palestinian political leader Mustafa Barghouthi. Four months after Sharon-with
Barak's
approval-decided to "demonstrate Jewish sovereignty" over the Islamic holy
sites in occupied East Jerusalem by making a provocative visit to the Haram
al-Sharif, Palestinian losses from Israel's suppression of the "intifada al-Aksa"
are beginning to reach Sabra and Shatila proportions.

According to Barghouthi's Union of Palestinian Medical Relief Committees, Palestinian
casualties from the Israeli army and settlers now stand at nearly 360 killed
and more than 13,000 injured. In addition, according to a UN economist, a military
blockade isolating each Palestinian town and village from the other in the
occupied
territories has caused a 13 percent decline in the Palestinians' GDP and a
50 percent increase in their unemployment and poverty levels.

"The vast majority of Palestinians don't see Sharon or Barak. They see an army,
with Sharon and Barak as its generals," says Barghouthi. Some Palestinians
see more. They believe a Sharon victory will be a boon for their cause. "He
will expose the true face of Israel," says Hussam Khader, an activist in Yasir
Arafat's Fatah movement in Nablus, "and force the world, including the US,
to address its real responsibilities to the peace process."

This is not a vision shared by the Palestinian negotiators. Perhaps they are
aware that the "world" is never so negligent of its "responsibilities" as when
Israel is the culprit, but surely they are concerned that the fall of Barak
and rise of Sharon may spell the end not only of what is left of the negotiating
process but also their
own privileged leadership position within it. This may be why Arafat is warning
that Sharon would be a "disaster" for the peace process and would increase
the risk of regional war.

For most Palestinians -- and a few Israelis -- the recent "intensive talks"
between the two sides at the Egyptian resort of Taba were thus seen not as
a genuine attempt to seal an agreement, but as a charade to woo back to Barak's
fold two Israeli constituencies threatening to abandon him on election day,
February 6. These include some elements of the Jewish left, appalled by his
excessive response to the Palestinian uprising, and the million or so Palestinian
citizens of Israel who remember that it was Barak (and not Sharon) who gave
the order that the police shoot

[CTRL] Alleged ATF Murder Carl Ray Wilson of Ruled Homicide (posted on Free Republic)

 Carl Wilson's Death Ruled Homicide

Shot to death in his bed in the middle of the night by ATF
by Wayne Hicks and Henrietta Bowman

 http://freerepublic.com/forum/a3a75aa397377.htm

Shot to death in his bed in the middle of the night by ATF

The death of 60-year-old Carl Ray Wilson in Arkansas, which we
 reported
on last week, has been officially ruled a "homicide" by the Arkansas
 State
Crime Laboratory. According to the family, the Death Certificate
 issued this
past Friday contains only that word in the space for "Cause of
 Death".

The question remains as to which of three legal classifications the
 death
falls into: Webster's Dictionary defines homicide as "The killing of
 one
human being by another," but continues, "Homicide is of three kinds:
justifiable, as when the killing is performed in the exercise of a
 right
or performance of a duty; excusable, as when done, although not as
 duty or
right, yet without culpable or criminal intent; and felonious, or
involving what the law terms malice; the latter may be either
 manslaughter
 or
 murder."

Which definition would best apply in this case?

An examination of the facts known may shed some light on the answer.

Here's what we know at this point:

 1. At the request of Agent Bill Buford, head of the Arkansas Office
 of
the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms, a Search Warrant was
 issued by
the Honorable J. Thomas Ray, an Arkansas Judge. This warrant, we know
 now,
authorized the ATF to search the home of Carl Ray Wilson for a single
rifle and its ammunition, for the purpose of seizing same, on the
 premise
 that
Wilson, who had been to prison twice in his earlier years, was a
convicted felon and therefore forbidden by law to own firearms. We do
 not
know what the judge was told about Mr.Wilson but it's a safe bet that
 he was
 not told
that this same rifle had been seized. without any trouble from Mr.
 Wilson.
 on at
least two previous occasions, after which it was returned to Mrs.
 Wilson,
since it was legally registered to her and she was not prohibited
 from
 owning a firearm.

 2. The warrant was worded in a manner which permitted it to be
 considered
a "no-knock" warrant, meaning that officers of the ATF (and the forty
 other
officers who were there as backup) were authorized to enter without
knocking and announcing their identities or intentions. No-knock
 warrants
 are
usually issued when it is considered likely that the person to be
 served is
either dangerous, or is likely to dispose of evidence before the
 search can
 be
conducted. It is therefore unlikely that Judge Ray was informed that
 Mr.
Wilson, during his previous encounters with law enforcement, was
 known as
a man who did not resist arrest or other authority. In fact, on many
occasions, the local sheriff would merely call him on the telephone
 to let
 him know
that there was a warrant for his arrest and he would then come to
 jail on
 his
 own.

As for the second reason, that evidence might be destroyed or
 disposed
of. how do you flush a deer rifle down a toilet?

 3. ATF agents, backed up by local deputies and police SWAT Team
 members,
approached the house in pre-dawn darkness. Six of them are reported
 to
have entered the house, where they reportedly threw a "diversionary
 device"
into the floor. An alarm clock went off at the same moment, and Mrs.
 Wilson
and her niece, the only two witnesses, say shooting began at that
 moment.
Neither witness knows anything about the "diversionary device." They
 heard
 the
 alarm clock and then gunshots.

 4. At least six shots were fired through a wall into Carl Wilson's
bedroom, at which time, by a reconstruction of events, Mr. Wilson was
 hit
 more
than once, probably while trying to rise from his bed to reach a .44
 Magnum
revolver he had in a stereo cabinet near the foot of his bed. Varying
reports have him firing from one to four times with that weapon.

 5. During the shooting, one officer was struck in the back on his
bullet-proof vest. Since it is unlikely he would have had his back to
 Mr.
Wilson in the middle of a shootout, there is reason to speculate that
 he
may well have been hit by "friendly fire". which is nothing new to
 ATF
 operations.

 6. The only other injury suffered by an officer at the scene was when
 one
of them ducked too quickly to avoid Carl's returned fire and got
 splinters
in his face. An officer who was present at the time has speculated
 off the
record that the splinters were thrown up by a round from Carl's
 pistol
striking the floor, probably from a reflexive tightening of his
 trigger
finger after being shot seven times in total.

 7. When the firing stopped, Mrs. Wilson and her niece ran into the

Cannot believe this list is for real - my guess would be though they

Half the fun of belonging to a secret society is that it is exclusive -

loved Eternity.

So I have switched to St. John's Camillia which I love - but when
everyone starts using this, and it is no longer exclusive - why pay the

So wonder what the new name is? What is that old biblical line about

Re: [CTRL] {OT}Candles: a burning controversy

2001-02-02 Thread Tenorlove

-Caveat Lector-

There are a couple of things that the article didn't mention that you
should be aware of:

1. Candles, or any open flame (indoor grill, what have you), should not
be used indoors without SOME kind of ventilation: an exhaust fan, an
open window (even if only slightly), etc.

2. The biggest danger from candles is not soot, but fire. Never leave a
candle unattended, and keep the candles, and whatever you light them
with, out of the reach of children and pets. Don't burn them near
draperies or upholstery or bedding, or near silk lampshades (this
latter is how my friend's house caught on fire). Make sure that your
candle is in a proper candleholder, or on a heat-resistant surface, not
on a wooden table. If you have those big candles that don't fit in
candleholders, put them on a trivet, like you would a hot dish on your
dining room table. You can get trivets to match your decor just about
anyplace that sells housewares; a ceramic or concrete tile will work,
too.

Re: [CTRL] Letter to Justice Sandra Day O'Connor

Online Journal - http://www.onlinejournal.com

02-02-01: My Letter to Justice Sandra Day O'Connor

By PJ McIlvaine

Justice O'Connor:

According to recent news reports, it's said that you're personally
disappointed over the expressions of public outrage fueled by your 5-4
ruling in Bush vs. Gore. You're so disgusted, it's alleged, that you're
even thinking of hastening your retirement from the court.

I too am disappointed. I'm disappointed that such an august, venerable
body as the Supreme Court allowed themselves to be dragged into what was
essentially a political wrangle. The public was allowed a rare peek under
your black robes and to our collective dismay, discovered that instead of
acting as interpreters of the law, you were merely partisans of George W.
Bush. Why did I even bother to vote?

Never mind that you, Justices Scalia and Thomas should have all recused
yourselves because of your ties to the Bush law firm, transition team and
admitted bias. Bury the fact that two weeks previous to your December 12th
decision, you had already refused to consider Bush's bogus Equal
Protection argument. And let's not even mention learned attorneys like
Vincent Bugiliosi and Alan Dershowitz and hundreds of law professors and
scholars throughout the country who say in their legalese what I knew in
my heart the night of December 12th even without reading your "per
curious" decision: it sucked.

I have a deep, dark confession to make. I had once aspired to be a lawyer.
I followed high profile cases like a kid running after an ice cream truck.
I read about great attorneys like Clarence Darrow, William Kunstler and F.
Lee Bailey and vowed only to defend "innocent people." I loved Atticus
Finch. I studied pre-law in college but eventually my love for words was
stronger than my love of the law.

So it was with special interest that I followed the legal issues raised in
the Florida Fiasco and soon enough, all my beliefs about our judicial
system went to hell in a handbasket. You see, Justice O'Connor, I was an
idealist who thought that the Supreme Court would ultimately rule in favor
of having every legal vote count and give the courts in Florida enough
time to count them.

Boy, was the laugh ever on me. For the first time in our nation's history,
the Supreme Court appointed our President. That was shameful enough but
apparently, you labored under the notion that the public was going to rise
up and nominate you for sainthood for saving us from this manufactured
"constitutional crisis." Instead, you're annoyed with us peons who see
your ruling for the garbage it is and have the courage to say so.

This sorry spectacle is the legacy of the Rehnquist court, and I hope
you're proud of yourself as you contemplate retirement in sunny Arizona.
The country hasn't been so divided since the Vietnam War, and we have you
and your fellow cohorts in crime to thank.

I think what infuriates me the most was that your action was so
unnecessary. If you had permitted the Florida recount to continue, by that
Monday or Tuesday, we would've known who had won. Under Florida procedure,
Bush could have then properly contested the results if it had gone against
him. If the recount had shown Bush to be the victor, then there would have
been no case to argue before you. It would've been resolved and the
results accepted, albeit grudgingly.

But you and your Bush buddies on the Supreme Court were so frightened that
the recount would show that Gore had won and not Bush, you couldn't even
take that chance, so you had to issue the stay to stop it while in
progress. Worse, when you released your decision, you added insult to
injury by remanding it back to the Florida Supreme Court with the
admonition to "fix" the constitutional problems but, ooops, sorry, we ran
out the clock by issuing the stay, so you can't do it in time. Better
still, to properly tie all the loose ends, your decision was good for this
case only.

No wonder Justices Souter and Breyers reportedly left the court in an
infuriated huff. They saw the hurricane on the horizon, even if you
couldn't.

So in the end we have an illegitimate ruling to go along with our
illegitimate President because if logically applied, your decision would
effectively overturn ALL elections since there are no "uniform standards."
How odd that since your ruling, I've yet to hear of any state legislature
taking up the issues you addressed. Obviously, they all feel that if it
ain't broke, don't fix it, with one grave exception: when it comes before
the Supreme Court in a close Presidential election and your name happens
to be Gore.

I used to believe that Supreme Court stood for fair play, decency and
equality. Silly old idealistic me. I guess I overdosed on Perry Mason
re-reruns. Enjoy your retirement, Justice O'Connor. Might I suggest violin
lessons?

I dissent,

[CTRL] Scientists say cannabis can drive users insane

2001-02-02 Thread Kelly

-Caveat Lector-

Scientists say cannabis can drive users insane

http://www.ireland.com/newspaper/breaking/2001/0201/breaking9.htm
Last updated: 08:32

Far from being a relatively harmless "soft" drug, cannabis can drive
people temporarily insane as well as harming the heart, lungs and immune
system, British scientists said today.

Studies showed that the drug can have serious effects on both mental and
physical health.

Dr Andrew Johns, from the Institute of Psychiatry in London, said
regular cannabis use led to acute psychological problems in a high
proportion of people.

One study found 15 per cent of cannabis users identified psychotic
symptoms such as hearing voices or irrational feelings of persecution.
A number of reports, reviewed by Dr Johns in the British Journal of
Psychiatry, suggested the drug could induce psychosis in people with no
history of severe mental illness.

Heavy cannabis use could lead to a state resembling acute schizophrenia.
In this case the drug was thought to trigger off an underlying illness.
Cannabis was also associated with high rates of other forms of mental
illness, such as adjustment disorder and major depression.

It appeared to worsen the condition of people already suffering from
schizophrenia, with users experiencing more and earlier psychotic
relapses.

Dr Johns wrote: "An appreciable proportion of cannabis users report
short-lived adverse effects, including psychotic states following heavy
consumption, and regular users are at risk of dependence.

"People with major mental illnesses such as schizophrenia are especially
vulnerable in that cannabis generally provokes relapses and aggravates
existing symptoms.

"Health workers need to recognise, and respond to, the adverse effects
of cannabis on mental health."

In another review published by the journal, Prof Heather Ashton of the
University of Newcastle said cannabis affected almost every bodily
system. As well as producing severe anxiety, panic, paranoia and
psychosis in high doses, it also impaired memory and concentration and
had a number of physical effects. These included heart problems that
might be serious for people with pre-existing cardiac disease and
suppression of the immune system. In addition, smoking between three and
four cannabis reefers a day produced the same risk of bronchitis and
emphysema as 20 or more tobacco cigarettes.

Tar from a cannabis cigarette contained higher levels of some
cancer-triggering chemicals than tobacco smoke. Chronic cannabis use
also appeared to cause a risk of complications in pregnancy
and childbirth, said Prof Ashton.

But cannabis and its derivatives had promising potential as a treatment
for a large number of medical conditions, said Dr Philip Robson, also
writing in the journal.

Chemicals in the drug had been shown to have therapeutic effects in
nausea caused by anti-cancer drugs, multiple sclerosis, loss of
appetite, pain, glaucoma, insomnia, anxiety and depression, epilepsy,
and asthma.

There was also evidence from animal studies that cannabis derivatives
can protect against cancer.

Proxy Server
The Demon WWW Proxy Service provides proxy facilities for Web (HTTP),

What is a Proxy?
A Proxy Server is a machine that sits between your computer and the Web
Server whose pages you are accessing. It holds an archive (called a
'cache') of the most popular recently accessed pages. These can then be
served to your computer far more quickly than if they had been requested
from the original Web Server.
Proxy systems are designed to speed up file requests, reduce
international bandwidth requirements, and ease the load on Web and FTP
servers by only requesting updated or new files that they do not already
have in store.
A recent development in proxy cacheing is the Automatic Proxy Service,
or AutoProxy. This gives your browser access to the very latest
information on which Proxy Servers are available, which types of
Internet access can be used, and whether some pages should be downloaded
direct from their own server.
Why would I want to use a Proxy Service?
In summary, the benefits you will notice are:
Significant speed increases when accessing more popular documents.
Overloaded sites will still be accessible to you - since they are likely
to be available from the Proxy.
It helps speed up your access to the Internet as a whole - the more
people who use the Proxies, the less bandwidth is consumed.
Details of the "Cache Now!" Web Proxy campaign, and links to more
cacheing resources, can be found at
http://vancouver-webpages.com/CacheNow/.
For a brief summary of the issues involved in WWW Cacheing, read Alan J
Flavells WWW Cache Briefing.
How would using Automatic Proxy Configuration help me?
Please note that even though our enhanced Proxies are fully operational,
"Automatic Proxy Configuration" is currently a Beta service. Feedback is
welcome - simply email your comments to [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Demon now has an improved Web Proxy service in place that will help
ensure your web access is faster and more reliable. Part of this scheme
involves updating the proxy system continuously. For full effectiveness
you will need to set up the "Automatic Proxy Configuration" (AutoProxy)
feature of your browser.
The benefits that you will see from using Automatic Proxy Configuration
are:
Improved resilience - you will be able to access the Web even if a Proxy
server becomes unavailable. We reconfigure for you.
Consistency of performance - we can ensure consistent service by
balancing the load on the Proxy servers.
Access more sites quickly - we can even ensure the optimum Proxy setting
is used for individual sites.
Other browsers that don't support automatic proxy configuration can be
set up using the standard proxy configuration.
Internet Explorer Proxy setup
You should be using the latest version of Microsoft Internet Explorer to
get the most out of your Web browsing. You can check the Microsoft Web
Site to see if there is a more recent version for you to install. We
recommend that you should be using at least version 3.02.
If you are using Internet Explorer version 3.02 or 5 for Windows 95 or
NT4, then you will be able to take advantage of Demon's AutoProxy
Service. If you are using Internet Explorer 3.01 or 4.0 for Windows, or
any Macintosh version, you will need to set the Standard Proxy
Configuration. (Internet Explorer 4.0 does not properly support the
AutoProxy service.) *

I had alot of trouble with paranoia
and psychosis in the 60's when I smoked marijuana.
I had to give it up for that reason.

I don't think this is some
conspiracy. The problem is they haven't figured out which types of people
respond this way and which don't.

 -Caveat Lector-

A TRIBUTE TO THE UNITED STATES
This, from a Canadian newspaper, is worth sharing.
   America: The Good Neighbor.

tell that to panama, nicaragua, cuba

Widespread but only partial news coverage was given
recently to a remarkable editorial broadcast from
Toronto by Gordon Sinclair, a Canadian television
commentator. What follows is the full text of his
trenchant remarks as printed in the Congressional
   Record:

"This Canadian thinks it is time to speak up for the
Americans as the most generous and possibly the least
appreciated people on all the earth.

Germany, Japan and, to a lesser extent, Britain and
Italy were lifted out of the debris of war by the
Americans who poured in billions of dollars and
   forgave other billions in debts.

no- america would not come in to the war until they had to for their OWN
sake. american bankers made usurious loans to the "allies" and did not
forgive those debts.

japan was used as an experimental lab by the americans. to use the phrase
"lifted out of the debris" to describe the decimation of two cities
(civilian targets) is utterly gross.

 None of these
countries is today paying even the interest on its
remaining debts to the United States.

lie

When the France was in danger of collapsing in 1956,
it was the Americans who propped it up

lie

, and their
reward was to be insulted and swindled on the streets
of Paris. I was there. I saw it.

When earthquakes hit distant cities, it is the
United States that hurries in to help.

not only the usa, which the comment above seems to try to indicate.

 This spring, 59
American communities were flattened by tornadoes.
   Nobody helped.

lie

The Marshall Plan and the Truman Policy pumped
billions of dollars into discouraged countries. Now
newspapers in those countries are writing about the
   decadent, warmongering Americans.

no such thing as a free lunch- all the superpowers pumped large amounts of
money into developed and developing countries- to curry favour with them in
all sorts of ways- military and economic. it was not a charity situation at
all.

I'd like to see just one of those countries that
is gloating over the erosion of the United States
   dollar build its own airplane.

ok look below

 Does any other country
in the world have a plane to equal the Boeing Jumbo
Jet, the Lockheed Tri-Star, or the Douglas DC10?

yes- the biggest freight liner in da world! see below

If so, why don't they fly them?

they do!

 Why do all the
International lines except Russia fly American Planes?

well- this is not true

AIRBUS "BELUGA" TRANSPORTS INTERNATIONAL SPACE SECTION FROM TURIN TO FLORIDA
02 February 2001

Demonstrating that the International Space Station is truly a global effort,
the world's most voluminous civil freighter aircraft in service, Airbus'
A300-600ST Super Transporter - nicknamed "Beluga" - today delivered a
crucial element of the International Space Station to the Kennedy Space
Center, during its fifth-ever visit to the United States. The multi-purpose
pressurised logistics module (MPLM), manufactured by Alenia Aerospazio of
Italy, in Turin, will be used to transport supplies and material, including
experimental apparatus between Earth and ISS.

Why does no other land on earth even consider putting
a man or woman on the moon?

because no other country had such a NEED for such a gesture. landing on the
moon was the decisive act in the cold war.

You talk about Japanese
   technocracy, and you get radios.

this is a racist comment. describing all the electronics skill/ developments

more of the same.

yeah- i know people can have problems with it- but it is a
conspiracy- the empirical evidence has been studied many times and the results
never say what the government want.
there was a huge study commisioned by the uk gov. in the late
60s but the results were ignored (baroness wooten?) can't remember- my long term
memory is shot to hell with all the hash of course...

i am not denying that you can feel paranoid or schizo from
hashish- but i can feel that without it too. and it is not (as this new study
tries to indicate) that it develops over long term use. everyone who has smoked
has experienced paranoia attacks while wasted- but not a continual decline thru
continued use.

[CTRL] Leviticus

2001-02-02 Thread c.

Background:Laura Schlessinger is a US radio personality who dispenses
advice to peoplewho call in to her radio show.Recently, she said that as
an observant Orthodox Jew, homosexuality is anabomination according to
Leviticus 18:22 and cannot be condoned in anycircumstance. The following is
an open letter to Dr. Laura penned by a USresident, which was posted on the
Internet:Dear Dr. Laura:Thank you for doing so much to educate
people regarding God's Law. I havelearned a great deal from your show, and I
try to share that knowledge withas many people as I can. When someone
tries to defend the homosexual lifestyle, for example, I simplyremind them
thatLeviticus 18:22 clearly states it to be an abomination. End of debate. I
doneed some advice from you, however, regarding some of the specific laws
andhow to follow them.a) When I burn a bull on the altar as a
sacrifice, I know it creates apleasing odour for the Lord (Lev. 1:9). The
problem is my neighbours. Theyclaim the odour is not pleasing to them.
Should I smite them?b) I would like to sell my daughter into slavery, as
sanctioned in Exodus21:7. In this day and age, what do you think would be a
fair price for her?c) I know that I am allowed no contact with a woman while
she is in herperiod of menstrual uncleanliness (Lev.15:19-24). The problem
is, how do Itell? I have tried asking, but most women take offence.d)
Lev. 25:44 states that I may indeed possess slaves, both male and
female, provided they are purchasedfrom neighbouring nations. A friend of
mine claims that this applies toMexicans, but not Canadians. Can you
clarify? Why can't I own Canadians?e) I have a neighbour who insists on
working on the Sabbath. Exodus 35:2clearly states he should be put to death.
Am I morally obligated to kill himmyself?f) A friend of mine feels that
even though eating shellfish is anabomination (Lev. 11:10), it is a lesser
abomination than homosexuality. Idon't agree. Can you settle this?g)
Lev. 21:20 states that I may not approach the altar of God if I have adefect
in my sight. I have to admit that I wear reading glasses. Does myvision have
to be 20/20, or is there some wiggle room here?h) Most of my male friends
get their hair trimmed, including the hair aroundtheir temples, even though
this is expressly forbidden by Lev.19:27. Howshould they die?i) I know
from Lev. 11:6-8 that touching the skin of a dead pig makes meunclean, but
may I still playfootball if I wear gloves?j) My uncle has a farm. He
violates Lev. 19:19 by planting two differentcrops in the same field, as
does his wife by wearing garments made of twodifferent kinds of thread
(cotton/polyester blend). He also tends to curseand blaspheme a lot. Is it
really necessary that we go to all the trouble ofgetting the whole town
together to stone them? (Lev.24:10-16) Couldn't wejust burn them to death at
a private family affair like we do with peoplewho sleep with their in-laws?
(Lev. 20:14)I know you have studied these things extensively, soI am
confident you can help.Thank you again for reminding us that God's
word is eternal and unchanging.Your devoted disciple and adoring
fan.

Theresa Le Pore designed the infamous Butterfly Ballot in Palm Beach

Like his father in 1968, Salem died in a 1988 air crash...in Texas. He
was flying a BAC 1-11 which had been bought in July 1977 by Prince

but Salem bin Laden's accidental death revived some speculation that
he might have been "eliminated" as an embarrassing witness. In fact,
an inquiry was held to determine the exact circumstances of the

The diciest part of the October Surprise saga remains the allegations

the Paris meetings followed earlier contacts between William Casey and

But what has made the Paris allegations so controversial is the claim

One underlying issue in this breaking story on JFK, Jr. is: How is news made

 Dear Jeff,

Thanks very much for alerting me to this incredible site. The plasmasphere
movies are totally awesome, and appear to show slow spiral movements of
orgone from outer space, towards the Earth, and then gently wrapping around
 the Earth. Superimposition!

Reich certainly never knew about this, and I don't even know if the
"magnetosphere" was known to exist. Remember, the first satellites were
launched only in the late 50s, just before his death, so he never saw
 photos from space, etc.

The blue color is a "false color" image, but the information provided
suggests the sensors were picking up frequences between 30-200 nanometers,
which is far ultraviolet -- invisible to the eye, but definitely on the
 "bluish" end of things.

 I particularly like the following:

 http://pluto.space.swri.edu/IMAGE/EUV_intro.html and
 http://pluto.space.swri.edu/IMAGE/EUV_movies.html
Showing beautiful streaming energy wrapping itself around the Earth in
 superimposing manner.

 http://pluto.space.swri.edu/IMAGE/nai_images.html and
 http://pluto.space.swri.edu/IMAGE/hena_m01.mov
This shows a clear spiral-form when the Earth is viewed directly from above.

 Once again, a big thanks.

An example of *not* being prudent.

Unless your goal is to destroy privately owned...whatevers. Dale
"Red" Davis Rides Again! Governor's "Executive Order"
 Creates ENERGY POLICE

 By Mel Young

If there is anything to be learned from the history of past,
tyrannical governments, it is that they all started out, little by
little, creating situations to justify their involvement. This is
followed by the creation of more and more layers of police-state laws,
rules, licenses, permits and regulations with the eventual goal being
to take away ALL of the liberties of the people and enslave them. And,
it should be noted, ALL governments have supposedly "good" reasons for
the new laws, permits and other tools of tyranny.

One can point to the "creation" of the massive crime waves and the
growth of the mobs early in the last century to the government's
outlawing booze. Prohibition not only made super millionaires out of
the likes of Joe Kennedy and many others; it was used as an excuse for
a whole slew of new laws, supposedly enacted on the behalf of the
people, but in reality, on behalf of the growth of the socialist state
 and big government.

One of the most dangerous laws was the landmark infringement on the
Second Amendment with the passing of the first antigun bill, requiring
that owners / purchasers of automatic weapons must purchase a permit
(read register) from the government. That law was supposed to force Al
Capone, Baby-Face Nelson, Bonnie and Clyde, and a whole slew of other
mob thugs of the time to race to their nearest Treasury Department
Office to buy a permit for their "Tommy" guns so they could be
 arrested.

Hello out there.does anyone know of a single incident in history
where the crook has gone to the government to register a firearm?

Thought the law was worthless with respect to reducing crime or the
use of automatic weapons by crooks, it did serve the purpose of giving
government more control and power over the people and, of course,
forcing a major crack in the Second Amendment.

 OK..nuff said on that subject.

Last night, Governor Gray (RED) Davis of California was featured on
the evening news, announcing his executive orders to combat our State
of California-created energy crisis. Was it to restore the status quo
by forcing the purchasers of the power plants in California to sell
them back to the power generating companies; which were forced by the
State of California to sell them in the first place? Not hardly.

What Red Davis has announced is a new bureaucracy to determine what
lights you and I "need" versus what lights we do not "need". This
applies in spades to businesses and industry.

Under the new, Socialist, "Davis" plan, the governor is setting up
"Energy Police" operations. According to the governor, guidelines will
be drawn up over the next week or so and sent out to all police
agencies in the state; whereby the police will be empowered to
determine if you or I are burning lights that we do not need and issue
tickets (only a puny $1,000 fine for each ticket) to the evil users of
 light.

The more I've been reading up on this fiasco, the more it stinks to
high heaven. Pardon my paranoia, if I dare to suggest that this whole
energy crisis situation appears now to have been a carefully crafted
plan to destroy the privately owned utilities in such a way that the
State and Federal Governments could get into the act, seize power
companies, natural gas transmission facilities, etc. and further
increase the government's stranglehold on us, as another step towards
the NWO / One World Government Socialist Police State.

A year ago, if anyone in California were asked if they thought a
police-state energy saving policy would eventually be put in place in
California, the answer would have been a resounding "NO WAY"!

WAKE UP AMERICA.as CA goes, so will go the nation.

As a former Electrical Superintendent and Plant Engineer in industry,
I can tell you that the State of California's energy policy, with
respect to lighting, is a total disaster; designed and run by idiots.

As the ranch resident lamp lighter, I'm going to write up a special
report on good energy policy versus the State of California's
ridiculous nonsense. I'll also write up some valuable information for
consumers so that they can easily determine their own cost of lighting
and ways to save both energy and money.

Remember that CA has been the "proving grounds" for many decades for
the Communist Party USA and the socialist fellow travelers. The first
major riot in a university occurred at U. of CA Berkeley. The first
 major

the california electricity swindle
by Robert Sterling ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) - February 01, 2001

A huge financial scandal, just in time for another Bush Administration, comes
courtesy of a legislated give-away sold to the public as "deregulation".

It's almost like a mandatory ritual for the Bush demon-seed to grab power.
Twelve years ago, it was the SL looting, much of which was concealed from
the public until the '88 election was over (Neil Bush's SL, for example, was
shut down the day after his father was elected.)

Now comes the California electricity swindle for "president" George W., and
though it is currently merely a state-wide fiasco (albeit the largest state,
one that controls a sixth of the US economy), it will either turn into an
early warning for other states not to follow or a shape of things to come.
Roughly half the United States have deregulated their electricity market, or
are in the process of doing so.

So far it has nearly bankrupt the state's three largest utility companies
(Southern California-Edison, Pacific Gas Electric and San Diego Gas and
Electric), almost wiped out a huge budget surplus for a state that has
received the lion's share of Dot-com dollars, and led to widespread blackouts
- something normally associated with a Third World Nation, not a leading edge
economy. It has also led to astronomical utility bills for residents in the
San Diego area, bills that may spread if the mess isn't fixed quick.

How did this all happen? News reports often try to chalk it up to a variety
of reasons, but it really is due to only one: state deregulation of the
electricity market. The proof is in the differences in the state between the
deregulated areas and the control sample. For example, the city of Los
Angeles is hardly known for being stern power conservationist, and yet
residents are unaffected by the scandal. The reason: Los Angeles has a
municipal-owned utility system, and thus was not part of the scheme. The L.A.
utility has even profited off the mess itself, by selling surplus electricity
to the rest of the state at a profit (though at a merciful lower price than
other energy producers have gouged.) If that isn't enough evidence of a
scandal, a study by Public Citizen concluded that peak power demand has been
lower in four of the last six months, which proves the claim by power
producers that increased consumer demand is the culprit to be bogus.

California Assembly Bill 1890 was presented to the public as a remarkable
restructuring of the electricity market for their benefit. That the main
proponent of the measure was Republican Governor Pete Wilson perhaps should
have been an early warning sign that something was wrong. In his eight years
in office, Wilson - arguably the most cynical politician ever to come from
the Golden State, a major statement for the home of Nixon and Reagan -
consistently showed utter contempt to the public in all fiscal matters,
pushing an agenda that consistently hurt average people, while benefiting his
large corporate donors. (Despite his atrocious record of ruining the
California economy during his first term, he was re-elected on a
not-so-subliminally racist campaign of scapegoating immigrants and a promise
to "get tough on crime.") The Governor hyped the electricity deregulation
initiative as the crowning achievement of his reign. It certainly has become
that: the transfer of public wealth into the hands of an elite collective is
the perfect symbol for his policies.

A.B. 1890 changed the electricity marketplace radically: it split the
electricity business into one group of companies to generate power, and
another to buy and deliver it. Utility companies were to sell off their power
plants, a move they lobbied for since the high costs of building and
maintaining unprofitable plants - most notably inefficient nuclear power
plants, which didn’t lived up to the promises of their proponents - had eaten
away profits. Price caps on electricity providers (a turn-of-the-century
Progressive era reform to prevent market manipulations and gouging) were
eliminated, with caps on utility bills to follow when companies recouped
expenses from failed plants. To recoup these losses, utilities were allowed
to charge artificially higher rates to customers, though these same customers
received electricity bills which itemized a phony "rebate" as part of the
agreement. (Why the public was supposed to subsidize huge corporations for
their bad investments was never explained.)

The theory behind the deregulation plan was that with multiple sellers and
distributors of electricity, a competitive marketplace would develop, to the
benefit of the consumers. It

[CTRL] The Bush-Enron connection

2001-02-02 Thread William Shannon
http://www.onlinejournal.com/Special_Reports/Dowbenko020201/dowbenko020201.htm
l

How to create a phony power crisis: The Bush-Enron connection

By Uri Dowbenko

February 2, 2001—The phony US energy crisis has deep ties to the Bush Family.
One of the prime beneficiaries of the "crisis" is Enron Corporation and its
chairman, Ken Lay, a major corporate and personal contributor to George W.
Bush's presidential campaign.
Even though California Gov. Gray Davis has reached into California residents'
deep pockets to bail out the utility companies through emergency legislation,
Washington Gov. Gary Locke has balked.
According to KCPQ-TV's Chris Daniels' "A Disturbing New Twist in Western
Power Troubles, "Governor Locke says, 'It's unjustified, it's obscene, and
clearly hurting all consumers.'"
Like other western governors, Locke has had to pay for electricity at any
price.
In November of 1999, for example, electricity was purchased for $29 a
megawatt hour.
A year later, the price increased to $160 an hour, according to sources at
Tacoma Power.
Last month it was at $525.
Locke expressed his indignation saying, "I've very disappointed in President
Bush that the new administration will not be intervening."
But why should he intervene?
One of Bush's largest campaign contributors is Enron Corporation, a
Texas-based company which is part of the de facto global energy
oligopoly-cartel.
Although diversifying into other business, Enron has been best known as the
largest buyer and seller of natural gas in the United States. Its 1999
revenues of $40 billion had made it the 18th largest company in the United
States.
Enron is also invested in energy projects around the world, including the UK,
Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, the Philippines, Indonesia, China, India and
Mozambique.
One of the global energy cartel's most visible players, Enron saw its
corporate profits rise 34 percent in the fourth quarter of 2000.
Enron shareholders should ask—did dividends come from price gouging US
citizens?
How George W. Bush Got "Layed"
Federal Election Commission records show that Enron Chairman Kenneth Lay
donated more than $350,000 directly to Bush campaigns since 1997.
Lay also gave another $100,000 to Republican candidates and fundraising
committees.
In addition, Enron Corporation, including employees, also donated $1.5
million in soft money to Bush and Republican committees.
More recently, Lay and his wife donated $10,000 to the "Florida Recount
Fund," and another $100,000 to the "Presidential Inaugural Fund."
As one of his fundraising "Pioneers," Lay helped raise more than $100,000 for
Bush's campaign for president.
In consideration of these numbers, is it too much to ask for a phony and
contrived power "crisis" as a payback?
Naah, not at all . . .
According to newswire reports, as a new energy advisor for President Bush,
Ken Lay says that precap prices for wholesale electricity in the West "is not
even a short-term solution."
Not coincidentally, Enron is the largest power marketer in the United States.
A cap would limit the prices it and other wholesalers could charge to
utilities. Wholesale power prices were deregulated under the landmark 1996
law but retail rates were not.
Lay said the federal government should limit itself to an "advisory" role,
letting California leaders resolve a "pretty much self-inflicted problem."
California's rolling blackouts have come as the two large utilities, PGE
Corp. and Southern California Edison, have struggled under huge debts through
buying electricity at higher wholesale prices than they can recoup under the
retail rates they are allowed to charge.
In the short term, Lay said, the state government will have to "buy the power
to fill the short positions of the utilities."
And to ensure Enron's unconscionable profit, he should have added.
Enron's Pug Winokur, Shadow Government Insider
On the Enron corporate website, one of the members of the board of directors,
Herbert S. "Pug" Winokur, Jr., is described as chairman and CEO of Capricorn
Holdings, Inc., and former senior executive vice president of Penn Central
Corporation.
As the Insiders' Insider, "Pug" Winokur has been such a permanent fixture in
the Washington Old Boy Network that he's even mentioned in a 1978 book by
Daniel Guttman called "The Shadow Government."
Historically Winokur's Capricorn Holdings was used as an investment vehicle
in NHP, an apartment management firm headed by Roderick Heller III.
In turn, NHP's assets included oft-purloined and defaulted HUD Section 8
subsidy housing, a notorious and well-known vehicle for fraud and money
laundering.
Winokur was also on the Board of Directors of Harvard Endowment Fund, which
purchased 50 percent of NHP, making the prestigious Harvard a prototypical,
but very low-profile, slum landlord. (See "Bushwhacked: HUD Fraud, Spooks and
the Slumlords of Harvard")
It should also be noted that George W. Bush attended Harvard Business School.

[CTRL] Bush Funeralgate

2001-02-02 Thread William Shannon
http://www.austinchronicle.com/issues/dispatch/2001-01-26/pols_naked5.html

The Lawsuit That Wouldn't Die

BY ROBERT BRYCE

January 26, 2001: You read it here first: Within a year, George W. Bush will
be ordered to testify under oath in the influence-buying scandal known as
Funeralgate. So far, Bush has avoided all efforts to put him under oath. In
1996, his attorney, Al Gonzales, was able to keep his client from being
selected for jury duty in a drunken driving case here in Travis County. But
the stakes in that case were small and Bush wasn't the focus of the court
action. Funeralgate is a different story. Bush has been named as a defendant
in the whistleblower lawsuit brought by Eliza May, the former executive
director of the Texas Funeral Service Commission; the suit alleges that Bush
and others who got campaign contributions from funeral giant Service
Corporation International worked to thwart an investigation into SCI's hiring
of improperly licensed embalmers. Just as he did in 1996, Gonzales, who is
now the White House general counsel, will do all he can to keep Bush out of
situations in which he must swear to tell the truth. May's attorneys have
been trying to get Bush under oath for more than 16 months. And they have
many reasons to support their argument that Bush, and only Bush, can answer
questions about discrepancies in testimony given in the Funeralgate mess. For
instance, the attorneys want to ask Bush about his conversations with former
TFSC chairman Dick McNeil, who has testified that he talked briefly with Bush
in 1998 about the investigation the agency was doing. They also want to ask
Bush why his chief of staff, Joe Allbaugh, was so quick to intervene during
the TFSC's 1998 investigation of Houston-based funeral giant SCI. May's
attorneys are particularly interested in what Allbaugh, whom Bush has
appointed as head of the Federal Emergency Management Agency, will say under
oath. During May's investigation into SCI, Allbaugh conducted two meetings
with her. The purpose of the meetings, says May's lawsuit, was to "pressure
and intimidate May concerning the SCI investigation." Adding further intrigue
to the influence-buying mess was last month's move by May's attorneys to name
Texas Attorney General John Cornyn as a defendant in the suit. The attorneys
charge that Cornyn went out of his way to help SCI during the TFSC
investigation. As first reported in the Chronicle, the AG's office determined
in early 1999 that it would not get involved in interpreting TFSC regulations
while the agency was conducting its investigation of SCI. But shortly after
that finding, Cornyn personally intervened, overruling the agency's earlier
finding. That allowed the agency to interpret state law in a manner that was
favorable to SCI. In their latest court pleading, May's lawyers, Derek Howard
and Charles Herring Jr., claim that in January of 1999, Cornyn "began
participating in the improper and illegal effort to prevent a full and proper
investigation of SCI and to assist SCI and other conspirators in covering-up
their prior improper, illegal actions, and in preventing May" and the TFSC
from enforcing the law. The suit points out that Cornyn's chief deputy, Andy
Taylor, used to work at the same law firm that was representing SCI at the
commission -- and that by meeting with some SCI officials while working for
the attorney general, Taylor acted unethically. In response to the lawsuit,
Cornyn's office issued a terse statement, saying the attorney general "holds
himself and his staff to the highest ethical standards. This is a politically
motivated effort to try to jump-start a two-year-old lawsuit." Herring said
that by intervening in the SCI matter, Cornyn changed longstanding policy at
the AG's office. Cornyn was "doing a special favor for [SCI CEO Robert]
Waltrip," he said. "That's not the way government is supposed to work. In our
view, Cornyn was enlisted in the conspiracy." The lawsuit was originally
scheduled to go to trial in the spring. It now appears that it will be
delayed by several months. May's attorneys appear to have a good case against
the state, though they'll have a difficult time proving that Bush, Cornyn,
and the others acted to protect SCI because they got campaign donations from
the company and Waltrip. Still, that's not the most disturbing aspect of
Funeralgate. Voters have become inured to the fact that politicians do favors
for big donors; the most disturbing part of this mess is that at no time did
Bush, Allbaugh, SCI, Cornyn, or state Sen. John Whitmire, D-Houston, act on
behalf of, or show any concern for, Texas consumers. Instead, they acted to
protect the fat cats. That's the scandal.

Special AlterNet Coverage: Two Faces of Globalization
 http://www.alternet.org/global.html

Two summits on globalization -- the World Economic Forum in
Davos,
Switzerland and the World Social Forum in Porto Alegre, Brazil
-- faced
off this past week in a symbolic battle for the planet's future.

Though the Davos meetings were disrupted by massive citizen
protests and
police violence, and the Porto Alegre meetings were a turning
point in
the "globalization from below" movement, the mainstream media
hardly
reported on either gathering. AlterNet has now set up a special
coverage
page about the Forums, bringing together insightful views from
 participants, critics and observers:

Please pass this around to any friends or coworkers interested
in issues
of globalization and democracy. And if you know of any articles
or links
we're missing, please feel free to pass them along.

Rubbish. Do you think with the amounts that are spent on the Police and Secret Service
they can't keep one city under surveillance? And sure, anyone can wander up to
Buckingham palace but when was the last time someone did so armed with more than a
pocket knife?

This extensive surveillance was why so many people were surprised at the mortar attack
on MI 6 HQ last year. Of course it's not infallible, but like I originally said London
is under more physical and electronic surveillance than any other city in the world.

Soros, Sweeney Join Criticism of Davos Protest Clampdown

By Adrian Croft

DAVOS, Switzerland (Reuters) - Billionaire financier George Soros,
environmentalists and union leaders added their voices on Monday to a
swelling chorus of criticism of police handling of protests against the
World Economic Forum summit.

Swiss authorities mounted an unprecedented show of force at the
weekend to thwart a demonstration by anti-globalization activists opposed
to the
annual gathering of top business and political leaders at the ritzy
Swiss ski resort of Davos.

Police stopped many demonstrators from traveling to Davos on
Saturday and officials turned back more than 100 suspected demonstrators at
the
Swiss border.

Hundreds of demonstrators who were turned back ran riot on Saturday
evening in Zurich, where police fired rubber pellets, teargas and water
cannon to disperse protesters who hurled stones at police, set fire to
cars and smashed windows. About 100 demonstrators were detained and
three police injured.

The Swiss protests are the latest in a series of sometimes violent
protests against globalization that have become a feature of
international meetings from Seattle to Prague.

Soros, speaking at a press conference at the World Economic Forum on
Monday, said the Swiss authorities' ``excessive precautions were a
victory for those who wanted to disrupt Davos...The way it was handled was
not a good one.''

Banning the demonstration was probably a mistake, he said, although he
said he was not so sure about that ``as the demonstrators were bent on
creating trouble.''

Soros said he opposed the methods of the protesters but added: ``I do
think they have something to protest about. The global capital system
creates a very uneven playing field.''

Union Protest

Nine union leaders attending the forum said they had protested to WEF
founder Klaus Schwab at ``over-the-top policing that has kept away even
peaceful protesters.''

``We believe in the widest dialogue but what message does the forum
send out when it is ringed by armed police, water cannons, security
helicopters and wire barricades?'' they said in a statement.

The union leaders include Bill Jordan, general secretary of the
International Confederation of Free Trade Unions, John Sweeney,
president of the U.S. AFL-CIO, and others from Australia, Zambia, Canada,
India and Germany.

Noel Howell, a spokesman for the union leaders, said the forum had
become gradually more inclusive over the last few years but they wanted to see
the process go further. ``We've got 12 months with the forum to work
out a more inclusive basis for next year which would allow for peaceful
protests and dialogue.''

An alliance of environmental and human rights organizations which
organized an alternative conference to the WEF in Davos pledged on
Sunday to take legal action against Swiss authorities over their handling
of the planned protest.

Swiss President Moritz Leuenberger has defended the authorities and
Schwab has praised the police response.

The anti-WEF demonstrators accuse the business and political elite of
meeting behind closed doors in Davos to plot a global future that
increases the power of multinational corporations at the expense of
ordinary people.

Organizers reject the accusations and have tried to broaden the
scope of the meeting by inviting 36 grassroots organizations to take part this
year.

IMC NEWS BLAST | Thursday, February 1, 2001 | http://www.indymedia.org

A compilation of photos, video, and audio and text reports from the Independent
Media Center's coverage of the World Social Forum in Porto Alegre, Brasil, and
the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. Released Thursday, February 1,
2001. Check the Indymedia newswire -- http://www.indymedia.org - for upcoming
translations of this News Blast.

OVERVIEW

From January 25 to 30, the first World Social Forum convened in Porto Alegre,
Brazil. The World Social Forum (WSF) brought together grassroots activists,
international NGOs and social movements in the global struggle against
neo-liberalism and corporate domination. Planned to coincide with, and provide
an active contrast to, the World Economic Forum (WEF), which attracted the
richest and most powerful corporations to the Davos, Switzerland, during the
same period, to discuss strategies to further increase their profits, the World
Social Forum sought to create a place in which those involved in the struggle
against globalization could gather to initiate and/or expand dialogues about
developing viable alternatives to neo-liberalism. Nearly 10,000 individuals
representing social-change organizations from all over the world converged in
Porto Alegre for the Forum, and throughout the week they attended workshops and
plenaries about creating viable global economic and social structures. Was the
summit a groundbreaking convergence of forward-thinking activists or a move to
simply "put a human face" on globalization?

The World Economic Forum, which held its own annual meeting from January 25 to
30 in Davos, Switzerland, barricaded itself against hundreds of
anti-globalization protestors. Founded in 1971 by Swiss-based German
entrepreneur Dr. Klaus Schwab, the WEF has grown to become one of the world's
most important conventions of "global leaders" such as corporate executive
officers and heads of state. The WEF allows multinational corporations
unprecedented access to the government decision-makers who influence their
industries, and it grants governments an unparalleled opportunity to coordinate
their operations with global business. Swiss police vowed not to allow
protestors to disrupt the meetings, as activists in Melbourne, Australia
certainly did to the September 11th, 2000, WEF meetings there. Did Swiss
police succeed in keeping the focus on global capitalism and away from those
fighting against it?

This Indymedia News Blast will present some highlights of the multimedia,
multilingual coverage of the WSF and WEF that appeared on the Indymedia sites
from January 25 to 30, 2001. Keep your browser pointed at the Indymedia sites,
especially IMC-Brasil (http://brasil.indymedia.org) and IMC-Switzerland

BACKGROUND comparing the WSF and WEF:

MANIFESTO OF THE WORLD SOCIAL FORUM
By the World Social Forum collective (21-DEC-2000)

The WSF's Manifesto declares that the WSF has formed to strengthen alliances
between NGOs, unions and social movements in the effort to develop sustainable
alternatives to globalization. It also suggests that the WSF wants people to
have greater participation in the IMF, World Bank and WTO, feeding criticisms
that WSF planners intend to reform those institutions, rather than fight them.
"The World Social Forum will be a new international arena for the creation and
exchange of social and economic projects that promote human rights, social
justice and sustainable development."

Appeal of the Patriotic Alliance of Yugoslavia and of the
 Anti-NATO Committee of SPS

RAISE YOUR VOICE AGAINST THE CRIMINAL SOLANA!

The second anniversary of the beginning of the NATO aggression against
  Yugoslavia is approaching.

We must not allow these who ordered aggression, who are responsible for
crimes against peace and humanity, for genocide, for death of thousands
of civilians, women and children, for humanitarian and environmental
  catastrophe to rejoice.

Javier Solana is one of them. As secretary-general of NATO he ordered
aggression to begin on March 24, 1999.

And it is exactly him who is readying these days (7th and 8th of
February) to come as a guest of the new Belgrade authorities, and as a
member of the delegation of the European Union.

That we must not allow because it would represent not only an offence to
the people of Yugoslavia, but a civilisational embarrassment for Europe.

Solana is sentenced by an appropriate Yugoslav court to 20 years of
imprisonment for crimes against people of Yugoslavia. At the same time,
these are the crimes against all the peoples of the Balkans.

He is one of most responsible for the use of the uranium, plutonium and
other genocidal materials whose consequences are going to be borne not
only by the contemporary generations of Europeans, but also their
  descendants.

For that reason, we call upon all the Yugoslav patriots, all the friends
at the Balkans, in Europe and the world, all the people of good will to
raise their voice of protest against the attempt tohumiliate
  Yugoslavia and the Yugoslavs.

  Gentlemen of the European Union,

We appeal to you not to take part in offending and humiliating one
European nation that always stood to the defence of European and
civilisation values. Do not send us the criminal Javier Solana because
he is a symbol of evil not only for the peoples of Balkans, but also for
the huge portion of the contemporary humankind.

It is upon you to show historical responsibility!

I saw the Iron Sheik on Jerry Springer a couple of months back. It was an episode
where loudmouth husbands got to meet the men their wives were having affairs with, and
the Sheik was still claiming he never lost by submission to Hulk Hogan.

Bob Backlund ran (unsuccessfully) for congress last year, his platform that people
should learn a new word from the dictionary every day couldn't defeat corporate soft
money unfortuantely. The web page is at

Atlas Shr - A glimpse into an alternate universe where Ayn Rand's
books are all 400 pages shorter

1. ALAN GREENSPAN finished reading Ayn Rand's complete works
seven years earlier. He advanced more quickly into Rand's inner
circle, began his career as an economist in the mid-1960s, and became
chairman of the Federal Reserve Board in 1971. Thanks to his earlier
leadership, there was no oil crisis or recession in the 70s. As a
result, widespread vilification of Arab culture by working class
Americans never came to pass, and the professional wrestling
scapegoat known as The Iron Sheik was never created. This allowed
wrestler Bob Backlund to retain the WWF championship belt in 1983.

2. COLLEGE FRESHMEN vowing to read longest book they could find
in the library, turned not to "Atlas Shrugged" but to the unabridged
"Notre-Dame de Paris." One of these students went on to a position of
power at Walt Disney Pictures, where he nipped in the bud an
ill-conceived plan for an animated version of "The Hunchback of Notre
Dame," thus leaving collaborators Alan Menken and Stephen Schwartz
free to work on other projects. Schwartz signed on for a "Pippin"
revival in Liverpool. Bernie Taupin, who had been competing with
Schwartz for the job, was so distraught over not getting it that he
began drinking again, and was in no condition to adapt the lyrics for
"Candle in the Wind" when Princess Diana passed away. Elton John's
own attempt at reworking the lyrics failed to take the world by storm
("Oh Princess Diana / we won't see you mañana") and the international
land mine treaty was never ratified. While crossing the Iran-Iraq
boarder, The Iron Sheik stepped on a mine and was mortally wounded.
On his deathbed, he admitted that he cheated in the 1983 championship
match and insisted that the title be returned to Bob Backlund.

3. RAND'S MORE CONCISE and artistically potent edition of "The
Fountainhead" made for a much better screenplay when it was adapted
in 1949. Galvanized by the script, Gary Cooper turned in the greatest
performance of his career, inspiring many young film-goers to move to
Hollywood and become actors themselves, including the young Iron
Sheik, who settled into a comfortable if undistinguished television
career instead of becoming a pro wrestler. Bob Backlund easily
defeated Greg Valentine in 1983.

4. THE BOOK "ANTHEM," being only 235 pages, was never written,
and so the Canadian power trio Rush never recorded their
"Anthem"-inspired album "2112." Due to the artistic hole gnawing at
him, drummer/lyricist Neil Peart felt stunted, dropped out of the
band, became an alcoholic, and killed the Iron Sheik in a drunk
driving accident on the eve of the 1983 championship match, and Bob
Backlund retained the belt.

5. INFORMED BY SEVERAL PUBLISHERS that "We the Living" was about
400 pages too short, Ayn tried to pad her first manuscript with a new
preface discussing the European impact of the Bolshevik revolution.
During her research at the Gregorian University in Rome, she met a
handsome young student named Albino Luciani. Though she was a married
woman and he was ordained a priest, they were able to keep their
torrid affair a secret until Albino was elected Pope in 1978, taking
the name John Paul I. Almost immediately, an embittered Nathaniel
Branden released his memoir "My Year with Ayn Rand." The ensuing
scandal forced John Paul I to choose between his office and the woman
he loved, and he abdicated after only 33 days as pontiff. His
successor Kozrow Vaziri took the name "Pope the Iron Sheik," but died
on his first day. Kozrow's legacy was honored by his successor Karol
Wojtyla who became "Pope the Iron Sheik II", as prophesized in the
third and fifth secrets of Fatima. Last year, Bob Backlund ran for
U.S. Senator from Connecticut.

[CTRL] The ULTIMATE Murder By Badge

CALIFORNIA POLICE-STATE COVER-UP -
The ULTIMATE "Murder By Badge"
By Mel Young - Posted: 02.01.01

Unarmed man shot over 100 times by police.

Hello out "there", does anyone give a damn?

The victim of this most heinous crime and cover-up was a white, American
male. That means, he had no civil rights. That means the
Revvveeernnd, rcist Jackson wouldn’t lift
his little finger in response, let alone get out of bed with his concubine
to race to California with Maxine Waters and Al Sharpton sucking up behind
him. Jesse didn’t make that pile, estimated to be over $27 million bucks,
standing up for white folk who had their civil rights violated and their
lives taken by the militarized, police-state thugs with badges and guns.

Being a white male, the victim deserved no respect from the major media.
Sure, an article was buried in the LA Times Metro section. There may even
have been some short blurbs; the police version, of course, on the evening
news, but, since the cops said this man was a freeway shooter and suicidal,
that was all she wrote. I mean, what the hell, we all know that a smiling,
usually female or minority "spokesperson" for the cops wouldn’t lie to us,
would they!

And, we’re not talking about one or two rogue cops here. We are talking
about at least twenty-two officers and possibly, many more from three
distinct agencies; all involved in the massive cover-up. Those agencies
include the California Highway Patrol, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s
Department and the City of Hawthorne Police Department. There well may have
been others, but this is a start.

Back before Christmas, I received an e-mail from Constance Flaum, mother of
the victim, pleading for someone; anyone, to step up and get involved to
bring the doers of this foul deed to justice. What I read in that initial
plea for help sickened and disgusted me and I responded.

Previously, a number of "honest" cops, former cops, forensics experts, crime
scene investigators, and even the Chief Medical Examiner of the County Of
San Bernardino, sickened by what they heard, had volunteered to help. Some
came from other parts of the state and some well may have come from other
states. They were not welcomed with open arms by the powers-that-be.

Naturally, the police were not friendly. The "brotherhood" was protecting
its own - oaths of office, the public trust, honesty, integrity, etc., be
damned.

The crucial video tape taken by the roving, independent, night television
news crew had been confiscated. The crew had been frightened to the point
where they had nothing to say.

Paramedics who rushed to the scene and pronounced the victim dead had been
hushed up and would not talk to anyone.

The victim’s mother paid an attorney a hundred bucks to get her a complete
copy of the police report but the 440 page report she received is incomplete
with numerous pages missing. The "official" police report is so full of
obvious distortions, errors, and blatant falsifications that it’s more like
reading fiction than fact.

The only cooperative agency, according to the mother of the victim, was the
Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office. Their autopsy report is some 88 pages
in length.

ATTEMPTED CITIZEN’S ARREST OF OFFICERS INVOLVED. At one point, desperate for
some sort of action to be taken against the officers involved in the murder,
the mother and widow of the victim served arrest warrants at the Hawthorne
Police Department, Lennox Substation of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s
Department and to the California Highway Patrol. Naturally, they were all
but laughed out of those agencies, who had no intention of allowing a
citizen to arrest one or more of their own. Nothing came of the attempt.

WIDOW BOUGHT OFF...LAWSUIT DROPPED. Sadly, the victim had not been very wise
in the way of the world and had "fallen" at age 27, for a woman twenty-two
years his senior with a new facelift, and had married her. One could
speculate as to what might have driven the poor guy to drink in the first
place but I won’t get into that here.

Allegations have been made that the widow, about 61 years old at the time of
death of her husband had at age 39 some slightly shady business dealings in
her past, involving her real estate business. She made a quick, out-of-court
settlement with the sheriff’s department for $70,000 bucks and an agreement

Megalithic Science,
Harmonics Energy Grids

By BRUCE L. RAPHAEL
I have been collating site data since 1984 with emphasis on geodetic
placement of archaeological anomalies in Australia and their relationship
to the earth’s energy grids. My background in rock-art research, and my
academic background in marine sciences (at the Bermuda Biological Station
in the 70’s and at the University of Hartford in environmental studies) and
geography perhaps lead me to this area of research. I wasn’t discouraged by
the director of AURA (Australia’s rock art research bureau), Robert
Bednarik’s comment that from his professional analysis, there is no
evidence of a megalithic entrada of people before colonial settlement and
if there was, is this proof of some conspiracy or coverup on the part of
the collective research done by academic professionals?
In this article I wish to present the evidence of a megalithic science
which is defined as the use of stone menhirs to define places which link
the visitor to the conditions of ritual: 1) a comforting holy space that
links earth with heaven, 2) a mathematical quotient that ties the
participant to the energy grid and its message and, 3) the celestial
equation — astronomical placement of earth-sun-moon-stars at the viewing
station.

My collated research provides support to Marilyn Pye’s findings. Her
absence from the media and eclectic circles has allowed all involved the
preparation time to face our opponents.

Working silently from 1985 to the present, ensuring the evidence was
verifiable and synchronised with current archaeological issues, I waited
patiently for Marilyn to come to her conclusions and go public with her
story. An important book to read is Oppenheimer’s Eden of the East which
outlines the basic theory that the earth’s cataclysms from around 8000 BCE
contributed to a science of the dreaming, a world myth that required a
rebuilding of the balance between heaven and earth, earth weather
metastability, seasonal variation, and cultural resettlement as depicted by
the search for new territories by cultures in collision as represented by
the myths of the twins, brothers or variant bloodlines as in the Cain and
Able story.

Oppenheimer was aware of very little news of our lost civilisation issues
here in Australia, with much of his extensive research pointing to New
Guinea and the Polynesian express theory, Lapita culture evidence, and the
spread of a metaphysical heritage from Southeast Asia into the West.
Australian ethnographers are well aware of the role of the Rainbow Serpent
in Aboriginal legends about the flood epic. Many legends record the
disappearance of the moon and sky.

The action of great flooding brought about the collapse of the Sundra Shelf
and hence sent further maritime expeditions away from the coastlines of
Vietnam, China and Thailand. The question of South American and Middle
Eastern presence is an additional string in a long chain of events that
brought many entradas to Australia.

Keeping in touch with Marilyn Pye and her story has been an ongoing pursuit
since 1984 when I first came to Australia to look at the evidence. I
tracked her activities in my journal for over 15 years trying to keep an
accurate record of her movements and acquisitions. Her relaunch of her
theory and findings will contribute greatly now to a new millennium of
controversy.

Her quest to find and discover the Golden Pyramid along with her quiet digs
and geological surveys in Cooktown is where the story truly begins. I spent
the last 10 years mapping and surveying sites that were connected in
energy-grid dynamics to the Cooktown question and found some amazing
results.

In this article I will focus on four sites that have mathematical
configurations based on the Cathian lunar grid. How many grids are there
now? Munck’s, Haartman’s Neutral Grid, the Becker-Hagan Solar Grid, and
the Cathian Lunar Grid, to mention the most popular.

Since 1984 I had many correspondences with Bruce Cathie and in one of them
he assisted me in getting started on how the data stacked up in grid math.
The sites are: Ayers Rock (Marker R), Aboriginal Stonehenge (Marker H),
Marilyn’s site (Marker B), and Marker E-Series the Astronomical Observatory
at Mt. Carbine.

In my book Rhythms in the Landscape, I inform the reader that if an ancient
race were able to position any of these sites correctly on existing grid
lines, they would by using a language that was not quite music, not quite
alphabet, as we know it. An American epigrapher and rock-art researcher
Charles Boyle had put forth a new process in the chapter of “reading the
record accurately” of ancient stone writings and megalithic statements. His
focus was on the Gaelic science of Teanga. This he stated could be worked
into any language so it was universal — a solar-based wisdom. So I was able
to view the

Stealth tactics, Moonies and the art of cynicism
By Carla Binion

--
From Bob Dylan's "Man of Peace"

"Look out your window, baby./There's a scene you'll like to catch.
A band is playin' Dixie./A man's got his hand outstretched.
Could be the fuhrer,/Could be the local priest.
Sometimes Satan comes as a man of peace."

You do not need to subscribe to any orthodox religion or believe in "Satan"
other than symbolically in order to appreciate the Dylan lyrics and see how
they might apply to the political scene today. Effective activists have
always advised the American people not to settle for peace at any price if
they want improved social conditions, but to instead do as African-American
activist Frederick Douglass once suggested and "agitate, agitate, agitate."

Today, as George W. Bush reaches out to woo church groups and senate
Democrats and put them into a virtual trance of peace and bipartisan harmony,
it seems that maybe he picked up a tip from his dad's longtime supporter,
Rev. Sun Myung Moon. Moonies practice a technique they call "love bombing."
One former Moonie (Barbara Underwood, "Hostage to Heaven," Clarkson N.
Potter, 1979) defines love bombing as a "persistent psychological effort to
disarm a skeptical recruit by showering him with excessive attention and
love" in order to win him over.

We have all heard the old aphorisms, "kill your opponent with kindness," and
"keep your friends close, and your enemies closer." Bush now takes political
schmoozing to unprecedented heights, but for what ultimate purpose?

Bush's White House Office of Faith-Based and Community Initiatives is
reaching out to churches to encourage church-based social service programs, a
move reporter Bruce Shapiro (Salon, 2/1/01) describes as building a political
"patronage machine." G. W. is also reaching out to Democrats, and has
invited members of the Kennedy family to the White House to watch a movie
about the Cuban missile crisis.

Today, Friday 2/2/01, Bush visited the opening of a Senate Democratic
retreat, telling the senators, "Some may think I'm naive to rid the system of
rancor, but that's my intent." Naive is not the description that leaps to
mind. The term "opportunistic stealth tactic" seems more appropriate.

What will be the next Bush co-opting gesture? A little back rub to go with
that movie popcorn? Singing inspirational agape-style love songs on the
Senate floor?

The halls of government have been used for more worthwhile purposes in the
past. For example, when a scandal broke in 1976 involving Sun Myung Moon, an
eventual political backer of President George H. W. Bush, then-U. S. Rep.
Donald Fraser (D-MN) headed the congressional committee investigating the
scandal.

Frasier noted that among Moonies any objection to Moon, who repeatedly refers
to himself as "the Messiah," and his clandestine political activity in the
U.S. was considered "infidelity to Master and was like being disobedient to
God." (Fraser Report, p. 320.) George H. W. Bush was Director of the CIA at
the time the Koreagate scandal broke.

According to Robert Boettcher, staff director of the Fraser committee,
(Boettcher, "Gifts of Deceit: Sun Myung Moon, Tongsun Park and the Korean
Scandal," Holt, Rinehart, Winston, 1980), Koreagate involved a congressional
investigation into the following:

(1) Moonies allegedly acting as unregistered agents of a foreign intelligence
service, the Korean CIA.

(2) Moon's alleged violation of laws on taxes, banking, charity fraud, and
arms export control.

(3) Moon's allegedly being secretly paid by the Korean CIA to disrupt an
official visit of the Prime Minister of Japan.

(4) Moon's allegedly smuggling large amounts of money into the U. S. and
allegedly smuggling in hundreds of aliens under the guise of his "students"
in order to put them to work in his businesses.

(5) Moon's allegedly negotiating, as an unregistered agent of the Korean
government, for the manufacture and export of M-16 rifles.

6) Moon's allegedly infiltrating offices of Senators and Congressmen with
covert agents who reported details of personal lives for Moon's card file.

(7) Moon's allegedly at one time refusing to answer questions about the above
activities before a subcommitte of Congress.

(8) Moon's minion, Bo Hi Pak's allegedly collecting $1 million from
Americans under the guise of a "Children's Relief Fund," and then using 93
percent of the money to pay public relations people ... and a wide variety of
other charges.

Robert Boettcher interviewed a number of ex-Moonies and reported to the
Fraser committee. He said in "Gifts of Deceit" that the Moon organization
frequently lied to people in order to recruit them and allegedly held some
people against their will.

Boettcher said, "Some former members recall Nazi films on organizing Hitler
Youth were shown as examples

No Olive Branch: Subject to Debate

How many times did we hear during the endless campaign that Bush
 wouldn't go
after abortion if elected? Republicans, Naderites and countless
 know-it-alls
and pundits in between agreed: Pro-choice voters were too powerful,
 the
country was too divided, the Republicans weren't that stupid and
 Bush didn't
really care about abortion anyway. Plus whoever won would have to
 (all
together now) "govern from the center." Where are all those smarties
 now, I
wonder? Bush didn't even wait for his swearing-in ceremony to start
 repaying
the immense debt he owes to the Christian right, which gave him one
 in four
of his votes, with the nominations of anti-choice die-hards John
 Ashcroft for
Attorney General and Tommy Thompson to head Health and Human
 Services.
On his first full day in office, Bush reinstated the "gag rule"
 preventing
international family-planning clinics and NGOs from receiving US
 funds if
they so much as mention the word "abortion." (This action was widely
misrepresented in the press as being a ban on funding for performing
abortions; in fact, it bans clinics that get US aid from performing
 abortions
with their own money and prohibits speech--whether lobbying for
 legal changes
in countries where abortion is a crime or informing women with life-
 or
health-threatening pregnancies about their legal options.) A few
 days later,
Thompson announced he would look into the safety of RU-486, approved
 by the
FDA this past fall--a drug that has been used by half a million
 European
women over twelve years and has been more closely studied here than
 almost
any drug on the market. In the wake of Laura Bush's remark to NBC
 News and
the Today show that she favored retention of Roe v. Wade, both the
 President
and the Vice President said the Administration has not ruled out a
 legal
challenge to it, placing them to the right of Ashcroft himself, who
 told the
Judiciary Committee he regarded Roe as settled law (at least until
 the makeup
of the Supreme Court changes, he did not add).
Don't count on the media to alert the public. The press is into
 champagne and
confetti: Who would have thought "Dick" Cheney would be such an
 amiable talk
show guest! Time to move on, compromise, get busy with that big tax
 cut. "Who
in hell is this 'all' we keep hearing about?" a friend writes, "as
 in 'all
agree' that the Bush transition has been a smashing success?" An
 acquaintance
at the Washington Post, whose executive editor, Leonard Downie Jr.,
 claims to
be so objective he doesn't even vote, says word has come down from
 "on high"
that stories must bear "no trace of liberal bias"--interestingly, no
comparable warnings were given against pro-Bush bias. So, on
 abortion, look
for endless disquisitions on the grassiness of the anti-choice
 roots, the
elitism of pro-choicers and the general tedium of the abortion
 issue. Robin
Toner could barely stifle a yawn as she took both sides to task in
 the New
York Times ("The Abortion Debate, Stuck in Time," January 21): Why
 couldn't
more anti-choicers see the worth of stem cell research, like
 anti-choice
Senator Gordon Smith, who has several relatives afflicted with
 Parkinson's
(but presumably no relatives unwillingly pregnant); and why can't
 more
pro-choicers acknowledge that sonograms "complicate" the status of
 the fetus?
In an article that interviewed not a single woman, only the fetus
 matters:
not sexuality, public health, women's bodies, needs or rights.
Now is the time to be passionate, clever, original and urgent. I
 hate to say
it, but pro-choicers really could learn some things from the antis,
 and I
don't mean the arts of arson, murder and lying to the Judiciary
 Committee.
Lots of right-wing Christians tithe--how many pro-choicers write
 significant
checks to pro-choice and feminist organizations? Why not sit down
 today and
send President Bush a note saying that in honor of the women in his
 family
you are making a donation to the National Network of Abortion Funds
 to pay
for a poor woman's abortion (NNAF: Hampshire College, Amherst MA
 01002-5001)?
March 10 is the Day of Appreciation for Abortion Providers--send
 your local
clinic money for an abortion "scholarship," flowers, a thank-you
 note, a
bottle of wine, a Nation subscription for the waiting room! (Refuse
  Resist
has lots of ideas and projects for that day--call them at
 212-713-5657.)
The antis look big and powerful because they have a built-in base in
 the
Catholic and fundamentalist churches. But (aha!) pro-choicers have a
 built-in
constituency too: the millions and millions of women who have had
 abortions.
For all sorts of reasons (privacy concerns,

[CTRL] Media Ignore Questions About Incident That Sparked Kosovo War

2001-02-02 Thread William Shannon
MEDIA ADVISORY:
DOUBTS ON A MASSACRE:

Media Ignore Questions About Incident That Sparked Kosovo War

February 1, 2001

In 1999, the discovery of bodies in the Kosovo village of Racak helped push
NATO into war. New evidence casting doubt on claims that the bodies were
civilian victims of a massacre has stirred debate in the European media-- but
there has been a virtual blackout on the news in the U.S. press.

In January of 1999, the American head of the Organization for Security and
Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) mission in Kosovo announced that 45 Kosovar
Albanians from the village of Racak had been massacred by Serb soldiers. U.S.
diplomat William Walker condemned the killings as a "horrendous" massacre,
stating that the dead were all civilians who had been brutally executed, many
of them mutilated after death.

Once the massacre story was reported in heart-wrenching detail by media
across the globe, pressure for war intensified and previously reluctant
European allies took a major step toward authorizing airstrikes. A Washington
Post article (4/18/99) reconstructing the Kosovo decision-making process
found that "Racak transformed the West's Balkan policy as singular events
seldom do."

Troubling questions soon emerged, however, about whether or not there had
actually been a massacre at Racak, or whether the incident had been
manipulated to push NATO into war-- questions almost completely ignored by
the U.S. media at the time.

Front-page news articles by veteran Yugoslavia correspondents questioning
William Walker's account were published in French newspapers like Le Figaro
("Dark Clouds Over a Massacre," 1/20/99) and Le Monde ("Were the Dead in
Racak Really Massacred in Cold Blood?," 1/21/99). The German daily Berliner
Zeitung reported in March (3/13/99) that several European governments,
including Germany and Italy, were pressing the OSCE to fire William Walker
based on information from OSCE monitors in Kosovo that the Racak bodies "were
not-- as Walker declared-- victims of a Serbian massacre of civilians," but
were mostly KLA fighters killed in battle.

The Sunday Times of London (3/12/00) reported that Walker's team of American
observers was covertly working with the CIA, pursuing a policy intended to
push NATO into war. "European diplomats then working for the OSCE claim it
was betrayed by an American policy that made airstrikes inevitable," the
Sunday Times reported.

After the massacre, the European Union hired a Finnish team of forensic
pathologists to investigate the deaths. Their report was kept secret until
now, two years later. The U.S. media is ignoring the story, despite the
report's finding that although people did indeed die at Racak, there is no
evidence of a massacre.

According to the Berliner Zeitung (1/16/01), the Finnish investigators could
not establish that the victims were civilians, whether they were from Racak,
or even exactly where they had been killed. Furthermore, the investigators
found only one body that showed traces of an execution-style killing, and no
evidence at all that the bodies had been mutilated.

The Berliner Zeitung also reports that these findings were completed as early
as June 2000, but that their publication had been blocked by the UN and the
EU.

Except for one brief wire story from United Press International (1/18/01),
not a single U.S. media outlet has run a story on the Finnish team's
findings. News outlets continue to refer to the Racak massacre without
qualification, despite the cloud of uncertainty hanging over the story.

A recent Chicago Tribune report (1/23/01) about the Albanian separatist
militia in southern Serbia speculated that the Serbs might "revert to form
and respond to an Albanian provocation with a Racak-style retaliation." (The
KLA-linked militia, called the UCPMB, are reportedly preparing for a new war
and recently fired on British KFOR troops-- London Guardian, 1/26/01.) The
Tribune made no mention of any questions surrounding the Racak incident.

A recent Philadelphia Inquirer story (1/23/01) about Yugoslavia's
relationship with the war crimes tribunal at The Hague claimed that "Serbs
refuse to accept the world's vision of them as aggressors," and noted that
Yugoslav president Vojislav Kostunica "alleges the killings [at Racak] were
staged to look like a massacre to embarrass Yugoslavia." The Finnish team's
findings about Racak, which prompted Kostunica's recent allegations, went
unmentioned.

An Associated Press article (1/18/01) did elliptically note the new report's
existence, reporting that Kostunica wants to discuss with The Hague "reports
attributed to Finnish pathologists saying there was no evidence of a Serb
massacre" at Racak (1/18/01).

With tensions in southern Serbia mounting and fears of a new Kosovo war
escalating daily, the U.S. media's silence on this story is troubling.

Rubbish. Do you think with the amounts that are spent on the Police and
Secret Service they can't keep one city under surveillance? And sure, anyone
can wander up to Buckingham palace but when was the last time someone did so

This extensive surveillance was why so many people were surprised at the

I originally said London is under more physical and electronic surveillance

Well Tenorlove - this item on O'Hai you might find interesting - looks
 almost like a Mafia job.

Too sloppy. If the mafia had done it, the remains would never have been found, ala
Jimmy Hoffa and Judge
Crater

They apparently located the remains by heavying one of the guys suspected of the
murder until he showed them where the bodies were. I'd guess he made an agreement with
them to get a lenient sentence (if not immunity) for his co-operation, which is the
way most mobsters behave nowadays.

What attracted these killers to O'Hairshe did hae some gold pieces
and I wonder from where. She claimed to be an anarchist - and had a
few followersbut someone took a great deal of time and trouble to
put this woman to death - and it sure wasn't over money.

What I find strange is that it took a year before she was reported missing. I can
understand why it took the
sone that long to contact the police, since he was estranged from his mother and
supposedly did not keep in
close touch with her. But you would think that at least one of the many people who
worked for and with her in
her organizations would have reported her disappearance. Didn't she have one friend
in the world who cared
about her welfare?

This was a genuine mystery, one of the most perplexing of last century. She was a
fairly reclusive person, and had had threats, so most people seemed to assume she was
in hiding. A witness at the murder trial claimed to have seen her in Eastern Europe
(presumably he was mistaken). There was even an article in Steamshovel I think (or
maybe Paranoia) suggesting she might be hiding out with Larry Flynt working on some
project. Phil Donahue made great efforts to find her as a guest for his final show
(she was on the first one) but despite numerous detectives combing the globe was
unsuccesful.

Jury deadlock on Watergate call-girl theory

By MANUEL ROIG-FRANZIA
BALTIMORE
Saturday 3 February 2001

The wildcat notion that the Watergate burglary was intended to cover up a call-girl
ring has been catapulted out of the realm of fringe conspiracy theories by a
deadlocked jury that leant heavily towards siding with the scenario's leading
proponent, Gordon Liddy.

Four hours after the jury announced that it could not reach a verdict, United States
District Court judge Frederick Motz dismissed a defamation lawsuit filed against Mr
Liddy by Ida "Maxie" Wells, a Louisiana college teacher who was a secretary at the
Democratic National Committee headquarters during the Watergate break-in.

Mr Liddy has said in at least two speeches that John Dean, a lawyer for former
president Richard Nixon, orchestrated the break-in to steal pictures of scantily clad
prostitutes, including Dean's then girlfriend, Maureen Biner, from Ms Wells' desk.

After seven hours of deliberation, jurors said they were deadlocked at 7-2, with
occasional 8-1 votes. The jury's votes reflected the majority's belief that Ms Wells'
lawyers failed to disprove Mr Liddy's statements about the call-girl theory and the
pictures that were supposedly kept in her desk.

The three-week trial was the first courtroom test of the call-girl theory, which also
is espoused by the authors of several revisionist histories. The outcome means that Mr
Liddy, whose conservative radio talk show is syndicated nationally on 200 stations,
will be able to continue talking about Ms Wells and his theory.

Mr Liddy and his lawyers said the resolution vindicated their contention that further
examination was needed of the conventional theory that the Watergate break-in was
designed to collect political information about Mr Nixon's Democratic opponents.

"John Dean has just had a stake driven through his heart, and I pounded it in there,"
Mr Liddy, 70, said as he left the courtroom.

David Dorsen, a lawyer for Ms Wells, said she probably would appeal.

Ms Wells, who testified in the first week of the trial, cast herself as a naive girl
from Mississippi before moving to Washington. She said Mr Liddy's comments hurt her
reputation.

[CTRL] Flags (was: Ashcroft-The Artful Dodger)

2001-02-02 Thread Ynr Chyldz Wyld

-Caveat Lector-

From: "Aleisha Saba" [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Bet you fly the Gay Pride flag but would burn the Confederate and all
 for which it stands?

Don't know about Samantha, but I know _I_ would burn the Confederate flag 'and all for
which it stands for',
in a heartbeat...

As for the 'Gay Pride' flag...well, that's a funny thing...

Seems that for years, the guys who fly the really huge (23 feet by 18 feet), expensive
kites down at the beach
where I also fly, had at least one of these 'rainbow' flags to fly off the line of the
big kites (these kites
pull 1000 to 2000 pounds)...

These guys are married and straight. The rainbow flag had nothing to do with 'gay
pride' to them, these flags
were marketed in almost every kite retail outlet, both physical stores and online. If
anything, people
equated the rainbow flag to the "Rainbow Coalition", which originally only meant civil
rights for people of
all colors...

Then suddenly the rainbow flag got hyped as the 'symbol of gay pride'...and the kite
fliers at the beach never
flew theirs again... ;-)

Two years ago, 2 gay guys came along and were totally overwhelmed with the sight of
all those really huge,
rainbow-colored kites in the sky...and one of them announced that he was going to buy
himself one to fly the
following month at a gay pride festival being held at a park in Hartford...because he
announced that such a
kite, in rainbow colors, certainly was an appropriate symbol of gay pride...(bet he
was in for a bit of a
shock when, if he really did pursue buying one of these things, that the cost of the
kite, matching 25-foot
spinsocks, 300-foot tube tail, and all the necessary rig to launch, fly, and keep it
anchored runs $2000 to
$2500)...not to mention understanding the DANGER involved in trying to handle one of
those things without
training)...

I have a rainbow-colored windsock in the shape of a trout. These too have been
marketed in kite outlets for
years (we attach various types of windsocks not only to kites, but to the flying line
as "line candy")...

This past summer, someone started selling these windsocks on Ebay, hyping them as
"show your gay pride, fly
one of these rainbow-colored trout windsocks"...so apparently I now have a gay fish...
 ;-)

Next we'll be hearing that all those St. Patricks Day images of pots of gold at the
end of rainbows shows gay
Irish pride... ;-)

So the point I'm trying to make is, just because someone is flying a rainbow-colored
item does NOT necessarily
mean they are making a statement regarding homosexuality... ;-)

One of my pet theories is that pothead paranoia is generated by the
extrinsic legal risks which are involved with cannabis, thanks to our
psychotic governments.

By the way, does anyone know what percentage of the total population
shows psychotic symptoms?

Several Senators, including but not limited to Kennedy, Boxer,
 Reid and
Leahy pointed out where Ashcroft misrepresented the facts and was
 "just plain
wrong." They did this by refuting his sworn testimony with quotes
 from his
own former speeches, and from the public record, including court
 records. If
you listened to their presentations and ignored their validity, then
 you are
simply not able to absorb these plain facts.
He misrepresented Ronnie White's record on death penalty cases.
 He
misrepresented the facts when he said he did not vote against Hormel
 due to
his sexual preference - in an earlier interview about the case he
 revealed
his opinion that Hormel's lifestyle was not conducive to the
 position in
 Luxembourg.
He lied when he said that the State of MO was not a party to the
desegregation cases re St. Louis. The record on the matter is
 plain.
He lied when he said he felt Roe v Wade was settled law. He has
 vowed to
do everything in his power for the rest of his life to see that it
 is
overturned. It is the defining issue of his life, apparently.
He said he didn't know what The Southern Partisan was all about
 when he
granted the interview. Not knowing what they were about, how is it
 that he
could have praised them for their ability to "set the record
 straight" on
important issues? His reply was that one of his assistants had
 praised the
magazine to him beforehand, and so he said what he said. I do not
 find that
 answer credible at all.
These and other points were all covered very well in the hearings
 and on
the Senate Floor. Every single one of the points made against
 Ashcroft were
supported by the public record, including his own speeches,
 interviews and
 court cases.
It's amusing that you would use the argment that if he lied, the
 pack of
jackals would have been all over him. The "pack" was all over him
 during the
hearings and on the floor. Case after case and point after point
 were made
and supported by facts in the public record. Your argument is weak
 and
silly, and similar to the bizarre argument made by several Senators,
including Hatch, that if John Ashcroft were so terrible, why would
 the good
people of MO have voted for him so often? Turn that argument around
 on the
so-called liberals the right wing defames constantly. Why have the
 good
people of Massachusetts, Vermont, California, New York and Nevada,
 to name a
 few, repeatedly voted for them?
Your arguments in defense of Ashcroft are laughable, as were the
 arguments
of the Senators who supported him in defiance of the very plain and
substantial public record. What is not laughable is that this very
 weird and
vicious man is now Attorney General.
By the way, do you have to "forward" every time you reply to
 something? It
pushes the subject title into oblivion.

The "settled law" to which Ashcroft referred was the fact

your proof of his perjury. If it is anything like your
concept of what was being said with the "settled law" issue,
I am not too worried about it. If any proof there had been,
that pack of jackals would have been all over it. After
all, the man has been in public service for 38 years. I
think his record has been checked out a few times already.

[CTRL] Killer Cats

Go through all y'r favorite gun control literature, either pro or con,

From "Wired News" 02-01-2001

 Killer Cats

Whiskers the cat may purr during the day but at night he turns into a
 serial
killer, Britain's Mammal Society said on Wednesday. Britain's 7.5
 million
domestic cats kill up to 300 million animals and birds a year,
 according to
the Society's survey "Look What the Cat's Brought In." According to
 the
survey, cats wearing bells killed more -- probably because they have
 to be
stealthier in order to keep their bells quiet. Cats in the country
out-hunted town cats, and young cats killed more than older cats.
"Generally, the two-year-olds killed the most, although some of the
 very
biggest killers were the grizzled and really experienced eight and
nine-year-olds," the survey said. The victims included 15 million
 rabbits,
1.5 million harvest mice, three million rats and 230,000 bats. The
 survey
estimated the cats also killed "alarming" numbers of reptiles and
amphibians, including four million frogs, 370,000 lizards, 700,000
 worms and
80,000 grass snakes. "They are certainly putting pressure on
 reptiles, which
may have found that gardens are a haven away from inhospitable
 agricultural
 land," the survey said.

[CTRL] Is Not Is

2001-02-02 Thread Euphorix

-Caveat Lector-

From
http://www.lewrockwell.com/yates/yates26.html

}}Begin
The
  Great Struggle: Republic Or Empire?
by
  Steven Yates
I
smell fear. Teddy Chappaquid – I mean Teddy Kennedy, of course –
didn’t
like John Ashcroft at all. Not long after the hearings were under
way, it was revealed that Ashcroft had once made some highly
politically
incorrect remarks about the threat of "tyrannical central government,"

and also expressed sympathy toward issues of state sovereignty and
even Southern heritage. He has spent his career opposing the
centralization
Kennedy and his ilk have been building up. Ashcroft got confirmed – by

a vote of 58-42 in the U.S. Senate. But Kennedy’s leftist buddies
have put the Bushies on notice: you have your token "right winger"
don’t try this again!
Kennedy,
who has never worked outside of government in his life, illustrates
as well as any one person how the dominant philosophy of government
in America’s centers of power has reversed since the country’s
founding.
I’ve no doubt that the Framers would be horrified by the kind of
career politician Kennedy exemplifies. And they would have been
right. Career politicians spend their lives (and millions of taxpayer
dollars) betraying this country’s founding document, which was
intended
as a permanent and absolute (not a "living, evolving")
limitation on central power. So again, I smell fear in the liberals’
attacks on Ashcroft. They tried – unsuccessfully – to get him because
they fear he will not enforce laws that are unconstitutional and
should never have been passed in the first place. He has said otherwise.
He has promised to uphold the laws of the land regardless of his
beliefs. It is too bad that he doesn’t go further in the direction
of freedom the liberals fear. But then again, if he did, he would have
had no chance at all.
The
Ashcroft hearings offer just one more roadmap toward the Great Struggle
currently underway – the struggle to define this country. Newly minted President Bush
Jr., whether he knows it or not (and I’m not sure

he does) is caught right in the middle. Here is the question of
our historical moment: Do we want to live in a federation of sovereign
states where the locus of control is, indeed, local, and in which
law-abiding adult citizens have sovereignty their lives, personal
resources, businesses and communities? Or do we want to live in a
centralized, bureaucratized empire, where what isn’t micromanaged
by the central government is controlled by government-favored
international megaconglomerates, all paid for through ever-higher rates of taxation?

When
Thomas Jefferson penned the Declaration of Independence, it was
a declaration that the original 13 colonies were seceding from an
empire, that of the British. The Framers, when they wrote the U.S.
Constitution, attempted to give us a federation of sovereign
states: as Benjamin Franklin put it, "a republic,
if you can keep it." The authors of the Bill of Rights then
purposefully gave us the Ninth and Tenth Amendments to keep the
power of the central government in check.
A
Republic. A federation of sovereign states.
But
with apologies to George Lucas, Empire keeps striking back. Thomas
Jefferson spent the rest of his life issuing warnings about how
centralized government tends to increase its power. He issued warnings
about the need for a vigilant public.
It
is possible to show (as Charles Adams does in his brilliant tract
  When
in the Course of Human Events: Arguing the Case for Southern Secession)
that the war 140 years ago boils down to a contest between Republic
and Empire. I am aware, of course, that it is now politically correct
to say that that war was fought over slavery – because, after
all, when Lincoln’s minions defeated Jefferson Davis and Gen. Robert
  E. Lee, Empire won its first major battle on U.S. soil. Secession
was not merely rejected as a viable means of checking its growth,
but the numerous discussions of the topic and even threats to carry
it out that arose between 1787 and 1860 were literally purged from
the history books. Not noticed was how the issue had been decided
not legally or Constitutionally but by brute force.
Empire
  has been
