Ron Paul, MD The 9-11 Commission report, released late last month, has disrupted the normally quiet Washington August. Various congressional committees are holding hearings on the report this week, even though Congress is not in session, in an attempt to show the government is doing something about terrorism in an election year. The Commission recommendations themselves have been accepted reverently and without question, as if handed down from on high. But what exactly is going on here? These hearings amount to nothing more than current government officials meeting with former government officials, many of whom now lobby government officials, and agreeing that we need more government! The current and past architects of the very bureaucracy that failed Americans so badly on September 11th three years ago are now meeting to recommend more bureaucracy. Why on earth do we assume that former government officials, some of whom are self-interested government lobbyists, suddenly become wise, benevolent, and politically neutral when they retire? Why do we look to former bureaucrats to address a bureaucratic failure? The 9-11 Commission report is several hundred pages worth of recommendations to make government larger and more intrusive. Does this surprise anyone? It was written by people who cannot imagine any solution not coming from government. One thing you definitely will not see in the Commission report is a single critique of our interventionist foreign policy, which is the real source of most anti-American feelings around the globe. The Commissioners recommend the government spend billions of dollars spreading pro-US propaganda overseas, as if that will convince the world to love us. What we have forgotten in the years since the end of the Cold War is that actions speak louder than words. The US didn't need propaganda in the captive nations of Eastern Europe during the Cold War because people knew us by our deeds. They could see the difference between the United States and their Soviet overlords. That is why, given the first chance, they chose freedom. Yet everything we have done in response to the 9-11 attacks, from the Patriot Act to the war in Iraq, has reduced freedom in America. Spending more money abroad or restricting liberties at home will do nothing to deter terrorists, yet this is exactly what the 9-11 Commission recommends. Our nation will be safer only when government does less, not more. Rather than asking ourselves what Congress or the president should be doing about terrorism, we ought to ask what government should stop doing. It should stop spending trillions of dollars on unconstitutional programs that detract from basic government functions like national defense and border security. It should stop meddling in the internal affairs of foreign nations, but instead demonstrate by example the superiority of freedom, capitalism, and an open society. It should stop engaging in nation-building, and stop trying to create democratic societies through military force. It should stop militarizing future enemies, as we did by supplying money and weapons to characters like Bin Laden and Saddam Hussein. It should stop entangling the American people in unholy alliances like the UN and NATO, and pledge that our armed forces will never serve under foreign command. It should stop committing American troops to useless, expensive, and troublesome assignments overseas, and instead commit the Department of Defense to actually defending America. It should stop interfering with the 2nd amendment rights of private citizens and businesses seeking to defend themselves. More

-Caveat Lector- Oh, where to start on this, my my, somebody is tossing mud. All these supposed atributes of fascism are ALSO part of the fettering and detailing of Communism/Marxism. The real differences are far larger and more sweeping than this author can figure out. Fascism is characterized by a small elite governing body...with just a few heavy weights making decisions whereas Communism is HUGE, multi-tasked govt with hundreds and hundreds of large agencies (ie Politburo style). With Communism, the govt constitutes as much as 30% of the public even...Fascism is governed by far smaller entities. Fascism has a recognized, public military DICTATOR...Communism usually has a General Secretary and a lot of other impt rulers too. For all that Bush is, he really does not portray a military dictator like Hitler or Castro or Mussolini. No..I don't believe so. I do believe he likes war tho and murdering, just as many Pretty Boy, Good Ole Boy Brits involved in Golden Dawn snuff stuff do. There really is a pretty big difference between Fascism and Communism and I am tired of trying to define this any longer. Keep in mind that Jews usually adhere to Communism/Marxism...as the poli sci govt of choice...and that anti-semetics often support Fascism, this means these two govts are NOT alike by any means. Fascism is used to fight Communism, to stop it...they are diametrically OPPOSED systems of govt. So..get your facts straighter than this. [CTRL] Remember Ruby Ridge
-Caveat Lector- Ten years later, there are still important lessons. By Timothy Lynch Ruby Ridge used to refer to a geographical location in the state of Idaho, but after an incident that took place there ten years ago today, the phrase has come to refer to a scandalous series of events that opened the eyes of many people to the inner workings of the federal government, including the vaunted Federal Bureau of Investigation. Now that ten years have passed, the feds will accelerate their ongoing effort to move forward and have the scandal declared ancient history. But the Ruby Ridge episode should not be soon forgotten. On August 21, 1992 a paramilitary unit of the U.S. Marshals Service ventured onto the 20-acre property known as Ruby Ridge. A man named Randy Weaver owned the land and he lived there with his wife, children, and a family friend, Kevin Harris. There was an outstanding warrant for Weaver's arrest for a firearms offense and the marshals were surveilling the premises. When the family dog noticed the marshals sneaking around in the woods, it began to bark wildly. Weaver's 14-year-old boy, Sammy, and Kevin Harris proceeded to grab their rifles because they thought the dog had come upon a wild animal. A firefight erupted when a marshal shot and killed the dog. Enraged that the family pet had been cut down for no good reason, Sammy shot into the woods at the unidentified trespasser. Within a few minutes, two human beings were shot dead: Sammy Weaver and a marshal. Harris and the Weaver family retreated to their cabin and the marshals retreated from the mountain and called the FBI for assistance. During the night, FBI snipers took positions around the Weaver cabin. There is no dispute about the fact that the snipers were given illegal shoot to kill orders. Under the law, police agents can use deadly force to defend themselves and others from imminent attack, but these snipers were instructed to shoot any adult who was armed and outside the cabin, regardless of whether the adult posed a threat or not. The next morning, an FBI agent shot and wounded Randy Weaver. A few moments later, the same agent shot Weaver's wife in the head as she was standing in the doorway of her home holding a baby in her arms. The FBI snipers had not yet announced their presence and had not given the Weavers an opportunity to peacefully surrender. After an eleven-day standoff, Weaver agreed to surrender. The FBI told the world that it had apprehended a band of dangerous racists. The New York Times was duped into describing a family (two parents, three children) and one adult friend as an armed separatist brigade. The Department of Justice proceeded to take over the case, charging Weaver and Harris with conspiracy to commit murder. Federal prosecutors asked an Idaho jury to impose the death penalty. Instead, the jury acquitted Weaver and Harris of all of the serious criminal charges. Embarrassed by the outcome, FBI officials told the world that there would be a thorough review of the case, but the Bureau closed ranks and covered up the mess. FBI director Louis Freeh went so far as to promote one of the agents involved, Larry Potts, to the Bureau's number-two position. When Weaver sued the federal government for the wrongful death of his wife and son, the government that had tried to kill him twice now sought an out-of-court settlement. In August 1995 the U.S. government paid the Weaver family $3.1 million. On the condition that his name not be used in an article, one Department of Justice official told the Washington Post that if Weaver's suit had gone to trial in Idaho, he probably would have been awarded $200 million. With the intervening events at Waco, more and more people began to question the veracity of Department of Justice and FBI accounts and whether the federal government had the capacity to hold its own agents accountable for criminal misconduct. Like the Watergate scandal, however, the response to the initial illegality turned out to be even more shocking and disturbing. When an FBI supervisor, Michael Kahoe, admitted to destroying evidence and obstructing justice, he was eventually prosecuted but only after being kept on the FBI payroll until his 50th birthday - so that he would be eligible for his retirement pension. And when Larry Potts was finally forced into retirement, FBI officials flew into Washington from around the country for his going-away bash. Those officials claimed to be on official business so they billed the taxpayers for the trip. After the fraud was leaked to the press by some anonymous and apparently sickened FBI agent, the merry band of partygoers were not discharged from service. Instead, a letter was placed in their personnel file, chiding them for inattention to detail. An Idaho prosecutor did bring manslaughter charges against the FBI sniper who shot Vicki Weaver. That move really outraged the feds because they insisted that they were capable of policing their own - so long as

The survey, of 500 border agents and immigration inspectors, was conducted for the unions representing them by Peter D. Hart Research Associates. It found them sharply divided on whether the country was safer now than before the 9/11 attacks: 53 percent said it was, but 44 percent said it was no safer or was less safe. "Prior to Sept. 11, 2001, it was extremely easy to enter the United States illegally," said T. J. Bonner, president of one of the unions, the National Border Patrol Council. ''Incredibly, this has not changed in any meaningful way." The survey also found low morale to be pervasive. Officials at the Department of Homeland Security dismissed the survey as biased and inaccurate, saying it offered only a limited snapshot of the views of the department's 42,000 employees. They cited a number of strides, among them airport inspectors' collection of digital fingerprints and photographs from more than six million foreign visitors since January, the first move toward creating a comprehensive system to screen travelers. In the last six months, the officials said, the department has turned away hundreds of criminals, travelers with fake documents, including fraudulent passports, and others barred from entry to the United States. The study did include some positive findings. Sixty-four percent of the employees surveyed described themselves as very satisfied or fairly satisfied with their workload, and 59 percent said they received the support they needed from their immediate supervisors. The study, conducted from July 30 through Aug. 7, had a margin of sampling error of plus or minus five percentage points. After readings and speeches, she's mobbed by people seeking her handshake, her signature in a book or a photograph to prove they got close to this firebrand from India. Firebrand may be an understatement. Last Monday at the Hilton, where she addressed the American Sociological Association, Roy generated some of her biggest responses when she urged the United States to immediately pull its troops from Iraq and "pay reparations" to Iraqis, criticized John Kerry and other Democrats ("How dare the Democrats not be anti- war!") and described President Bush's Cabinet as "thugs."Two days later, at a KPFA fund-raiser in Berkeley, Roy energized the sold- out crowd within minutes of taking the stage by saying, "We have to strategize and take our struggle forward."It's been seven years since Roy burst onto the international literary scene with "The God of Small Things," her semiautobiographical novel about a hard-luck family in southern India. Roy could have been content to stay within the confines of fiction -- and some critics say she should have -- but she was too restless for that. Her first big project: fighting dam building in India. Roy's celebrity helped generate media coverage of India's anti-dam movement, which objects to the way New Delhi's water projects have displaced millions of poor people. Roy has also opposed India's nuclear weapons capabilities and its embrace of capitalism -- issues that connected her with international human rights groups such as the World Social Forum.Roy's name is now synonymous with other well-known activists and liberal figures, including Noam Chomsky (who calls Roy "a wonder"), Howard Zinn (another big fan) and Michael Moore. In fact, Roy has essentially given up her love of fiction for a full-time career as a social critic. ROME, Aug 20 (IPS) - In the world of high finance, PEP is not a stimulant to keep you awake on the trading floor; it means "politically exposed person." Handling a PEP bank account is big, though risky business. Ask Riggs. The bank based in Washington has recently been punished by federal bank regulators with a record 25 million dollar fine for handling PEPs improperly and for managing accounts of questionable origin held by foreigners. The U.S. Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN) estimates that up to 1.5 trillion (1,500 billion) dollars is laundered annually around the world. Much of this is laundered by rich institutions in rich countries, rather than by tropical offshore centres. Where does it come from? Money laundering is widely defined as inserting money of illegal origin into the legal financial system. The origins can include drug dealing, illegal arms trafficking and bribery. The suspicious transactions at Riggs were exposed by a report last month from the U.S. Senate permanent subcommittee on investigations. The reported transactions included dealings with fat cats from poor or developing countries such as oil-rich Equatorial Guinea's Teodoro Obiang Nguema who heads one of the most corrupt states, and former Chilean dictator Augusto Pinochet. The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) in the United States launched an investigation this month into the payment of millions of dollars by five U.S. oil companies including giant ExxonMobil into accounts controlled by Obiang Nguema or his associates. The inquiry was based on the Senate report. ExxonMobil has denied any wrongdoing. The report says that these accounts which contained as much as 700 million dollars were kept open from 1995 to earlier this year with little concern that money flows seemed inappropriate. "Riggs was clearly aware of the corruption concerns associated with Equatorial Guinea," says the Senate report. The Senate report quotes a Riggs analysis prepared for a 2002 loan request as saying: "Allegations of human rights abuses following the announcement of the coup in March have been well documented, and have elicited international condemnation. However, any hesitancy on the part of the U.S. or European countries towards Equatorial Guinea will be temporary, due to the rising importance of the oil sector." In the case of Pinochet, the evidence obtained by the Senate shows that "from 1994 until 2002 Riggs Bank opened at least six accounts and issued several certificates of deposit for Augusto Pinochet while he was under house arrest in the United Kingdom. The aggregate deposits in the Pinochet accounts at Riggs ranged from four to eight million dollars at a time." As commander-in-chief of the Chilean army, Pinochet's annual salary in 1997 was reported by The Observer in London to be 16,000 dollars. Pinochet has been investigated mainly for human rights violations. The Bank of Credit and Commerce International (BCCI) collapse in 1991 is regarded as the biggest bank fraud in history, involving billions of dollars in dirty money. The bank had its head office in Luxembourg and was run from London, but its 1.2 billion dollar liquidation involved court proceedings around the world. In 2001, the House of Lords allowed the case against the bank to proceed. Hearings began this year in London. By Scott Baldauf | Staff writer of The Christian Science Monitor BAGHDAD - Abu Mujtaba is not your typical filmmaker. He doesn't have an agent, he doesn't aspire to move to Hollywood, and his interest in film is chillingly practical. He considers Black Hawk Down a great film, for instance, because it shows him how to kill Americans. Abu Mujtaba is a member of the media department of Moqtada al-Sadr's Shiite militia. He uses a tiny digital Sony Handycam instead of a Kalashnikov and is one of a half-dozen guerrilla filmmakers who record their acts of war to encourage their followers, spread their beliefs, and portray what they see as the heroism of Sadr's militia, the Mahdi Army. Mahdi's moviemakers have been shooting digital videos during battles in Sadr City and in Karbala, as well as all throughout the standoff in Najaf, which continued Tuesday as Iraq's government warned the militia that it has hours to surrender until they are attacked inside the Shrine of Imam Ali. This is part of our mission. We film in order to record whatever happens on the battlefield, because we have to get rid of the occupying forces, says Mr. Mujtaba, who agreed to speak with the Monitor on condition that his name be changed. The TV channels always show the Americans strong, saying 'Go, Go, Go!' They never show the American deaths. So these films by the Mahdi Army show how we kill the Americans, they are not invincible. The Mahdi Army, of course, are only the latest militant movement to have taken up video as a political weapon. From the kidnapping videos of Abu Musab al-Zarqawi to the suicide bomber videos on the West Bank and video-fatwas of Osama bin Laden, video has become a phenomenon for militant Islamic movements around the world. Distributed through dumpy roadside shops and even over the Internet, guerrilla videos have become a way of bypassing mainstream media and going directly to the masses. Video can be divisive, turning away as many supporters as they attract, but their effect is powerful nonetheless. Their use of video is part of a larger trend. It just shows their level of sophistication, says Marc Sageman, a former CIA case officer in Pakistan and author of the book Understanding Terror Networks. This tells me that they are dynamic ... as opposed to fading old terrorist groups. Their new members tend to be middle class, well educated folks, and not poor ignorant young men. The Mahdi Army's films are sold on cheap CDs (for about 16 cents each) and have a shaky-handed roughness similar to many a late-night police-car-chase videos in the US. But the images and the messages they contain are violent - and for Mahdi Army supporters, addictive. Although the Mahdi movie-makers are capturing battles scenes in Najaf and throughout Iraq, the videos are sold primarily in Sadr City, a Shiite slum of 2.5 million in Baghdad, where Iraqi police don't tread and are unable to shut down the stores selling the Mahdi Army propaganda designed to recruit new members. A video of a battle in Sadr City, recorded just six days ago by Abu Mujtaba, opens with the image of a burning US Abrams tank, disabled by a roadside bomb and then repeatedly struck by RPGs. Later, the video cuts to a crowd of Mr. Sadr's supporters holding what appears to be the blood-soaked bullet proof vest of an American soldier. I went to Al Jazeera and Al Arabiya with this video, but nobody accepted the film, complains Mujtaba. So then we invited them to come to Sadr City and film the fighting themselves, but they also refused that offer. It is not just me who thinks the TV channels are liars, it is the whole world. Mahdi filmmakers say the Arab news media may be afraid to broadcast such videos because they could face official backlash from Iraqi authorities. Last month, the Iraqi government closed the Baghdad bureau of Qatar-based Al Jazeera. Prime Minister Iyad Allawi accused the station of inciting racial and religious hatred by airing footage of kidnappings and fighting. Abu Rana, another Mahdi Army filmmaker who refuses to give his real name, says it is his responsibility to show that the Shiite militia is having successes against the Americans. The truth is we are killing a lot of the soldiers, hurting them, bombing a lot of Humvees and tanks, says Mr. Rana, who says he used to film weddings and special occasions before the Shiite uprising began last April. On TV, you just see the Americans have killed a lot of the Mahdi Army. I think the news channels are cooperating with the Americans. Either they are kicked out like Al Jazeera or they obey. Various congressional committees are holding hearings on the report this week, even though Congress is not in session, in an attempt to show the government is doing something about terrorism in an election year. The Commission recommendations themselves have been accepted reverently and without question, as if handed down from on high. But what exactly is going on here? These hearings amount to nothing more than current government officials meeting with former government officials, many of whom now lobby government officials, and agreeing that we need more government! The current and past architects of the very bureaucracy that failed Americans so badly on Sept. 11 three years ago are now meeting to recommend more bureaucracy. Why on earth do we assume that former government officials, some of whom are self-interested government lobbyists, suddenly become wise, benevolent, and politically neutral when they retire? Why do we look to former bureaucrats to address a bureaucratic failure? The 9-11 Commission report is several hundred pages worth of recommendations to make government larger and more intrusive. Does this surprise anyone? It was written by people who cannot imagine any solution not coming from government. One thing you definitely will not see in the Commission report is a single critique of our interventionist foreign policy, which is the real source of most anti-American feelings around the globe. The Commissioners recommend the government spend billions of dollars spreading pro-U.S. propaganda overseas, as if that will convince the world to love us. What we have forgotten in the years since the end of the Cold War is that actions speak louder than words. The U.S. didn't need propaganda in the captive nations of Eastern Europe during the Cold War because people knew us by our deeds. They could see the difference between the United States and their Soviet overlords. That is why, given the first chance, they chose freedom. Yet everything we have done in response to the 9-11 attacks, from the PATRIOT Act to the war in Iraq, has reduced freedom in America. Spending more money abroad or restricting liberties at home will do nothing to deter terrorists, yet this is exactly what the 9-11 Commission recommends. Our nation will be safer only when government does less, not more. Rather than asking ourselves what Congress or the president should be doing about terrorism, we ought to ask what government should stop doing. It should stop spending trillions of dollars on unconstitutional programs that detract from basic government functions like national defense and border security. It should stop meddling in the internal affairs of foreign nations, but instead demonstrate by example the superiority of freedom, capitalism, and an open society. It should stop engaging in nation-building, and stop trying to create democratic societies through military force. It should stop militarizing future enemies, as we did by supplying money and weapons to characters like bin Laden and Saddam Hussein. It should stop entangling the American people in unholy alliances like the UN and NATO, and pledge that our armed forces will never serve under foreign command. It should stop committing American troops to useless, expensive, and troublesome assignments overseas, and instead commit the Department of Defense to actually defending America. It should stop interfering with the 2nd Amendment rights of private citizens and businesses seeking to defend themselves. More than anything, our federal government should stop deluding us that more government is the answer.
