Fortunate Son is an important book.

In Investigation of a Suicide: The Diaries Hicks writes that Hatfield's
mother-in-law told another journalist that the official story about Hatfield's death
was false. (This is an important matter considering that Hicks himself acknowledged,
two months prior to the alleged suicide, that Hatfield's life had been threatened.)

He writes,

sanderhicks.com/articles/hatfield1.html

So if the Bentonville file exists then the mother-in-law's credibility is in serious
trouble. If there's an arrest warrant for Jim, and none for George Burt, someone is
wrong, and it's not the cops. I already suspect the mother-in-law is not credible.

This article ends without resolving or further addressing ANY of these points. More
than that, it ends with,

Although this investigation has to conclude that Hatfield most likely committed
suicide alone...

Why does it have to? What is that based on?

In addition, Hicks reveals an obvious distaste for Hatfield in this piece. His
characterizations are extremely unflattering.

Hatfield deserved better.

Look at how Hicks ended his Vreeland promo piece. Two of his claims to fame were, I
have appeared on 60 Minutes and Court TV regarding my company's publication of
controversial George W. Bush biography Fortunate Son.

I'm grateful to Hatfield for the book. Hicks got on national TV over it. I hope he's
grateful to Hatfield too.

Re: Fair enough - I haven't found any in-depth pieces on the alleged suicide.

Hatfield's wife Nancy told Linda Starr of Bush Watch (1) that there is absolutely
no question that Jim took his own life. But considering the kind of enemies Jim took
on, and the death threats he received (plus the claims of his mother-in-law to Bev
Conover, according to Hicks) one cannot be faulted for taking the official story with
a grain of salt.

Maybe Hicks' story could have cleared it up once and for all, but it didn't.

This is how Hatfield was described by two people who knew him:

Linda Starr:

Jim Hatfield was witty, funny, brilliant, articulate, a very good writer and was a
great friend to me. I will miss Jim, his many talents, his humor, his passion, his
work and a warm light has gone out of my life forever. The world will be a much
colder, darker place without Jim in it and we have lost a great fighter in the cause
to expose the truth about GWB. (2)

Bev Conover:

I got to know Jim fairly well over the past few years. I knew him to be a gentle and
sensitive man whose life, career and family were ruined because he told the truth
about George W. Bush.' (3)

-

Sander Hicks had some complimentary things to say about Jim but in my view they were
STRONGLY overshadowed by statements like these (4):

... a grasping after the bright surface of sure success and societyâs approval,
while on the inside there lives a truth no one knows until too late: doubt, debt,
insecurity, alcoholism, and failure.

But Jim was nothing but one pitiful character: $125 thousand in debt but still making
payments on a BMW.

These days, I'm between my stubborn initial defensive posture about Jim and realizing
that he was a scam artist, and not a good one.

--

I was certainly left with the impression that Hicks found Hatfield distasteful, which
in turn left a bitter taste in my mouth about Hicks.

Then Hicks pops up here with that Vreeland promo and with rude comments about posters
here at this forum . and then that pitiful interview...

(Correction 9/16/02: happenstancez posted the promo piece and rude comments about
posters here, leaving the impression that

But the enemy I see wears a cloak of decency,All non-believers
and men stealers talkin' in the name of religionAnd there's a slow,
slow train comin' up around the bend.
  – Bob Dylan, "Slow Train Coming," 1979
I guess it shouldn't surprise me.
I guess I should have seen this coming.
Still, what I am about to tell you illustrates remarkably well just how
low our culture has plummeted, just how completely our institutions have
been subverted, just how evil men's hearts are and just how blind we as a
society have become to the depravity that surrounds us.

Next month, the American Academy of
  Religion will hold its annual
  meeting in San Antonio, Texas.
At this meeting of the national umbrella organization for professors of
religion, church historians, theologians, ethicists and so-called scholars
in world religions, sadomasochism, transvestism and polyamory will be
promoted as a way to better communicate with God.
I was alerted to this outrage by a courageous whistleblower who travels
in such circles – Robert Gagnon, Ph.D. and
associate professor of New Testament at Pittsburgh Theological
  Seminary.
As he put it: "Here the slippery slope is greased by the very persons
who previously denied even the existence of such a slope."
The Gay Men's Issues in Religion Group within the AAR has set for its
theme for the program: "Power and Submission, Pain and Pleasure: The
Religious Dynamics of Sadomasochism." It also has another session on the
program, half of which is devoted to transgenderism.
Last year, Gagnon says, the group featured a session on the topic:
"Love Is a Many Splendored Thing: Varied Views on Polyamory." (Don't
bother looking up that last word in the dictionary. It's not there yet. It
means having sexual relations with more than one partner at a time.)
About the "Power and Submission" topic, the program explains:

Sadomasochistic or bondage/dominance practice (sometimes also
referred to as "leather sexuality") ... offers a particularly potent
location for reflecting on gay men's issues in religion.

One of the papers presented by Justin Tanis of the Metropolitan
Community Church, a homosexual "denomination," if you will, is titled
"Ecstatic Communion: The Spiritual Dimensions of Leathersexuality."
"This paper will ... look briefly at the ways in which leather is a
foundation for personal and spiritual identity formation, creating a lens
through which the rest of life is viewed," explains Tanis. "All of this
based within the framework of a belief in the rights of individuals to
erotic self-determination with other consenting adults, rather than
apologetics for those practices and lives."
It gets worse – and more bizarre.
Another paper, by Thomas vs. Peterson of Alfred University (though I
have to wonder whether it's not really Alfred E. Newman University),
focuses on "S/M Rituals in Gay Men's Leather Communities: Initiation,
  Power Exchange and Subversion."
"This paper uses S/M rituals within the gay men's leather community to
explore how ritual may subvert cultural icons of violence by eroticizing
power," the scholar explains. "Those who exercise power and acquiesce to
it in leather rituals meet as respected equals and negotiate the
limitations of power according to mutual desires."
Translation: Violence is OK when it is eroticized in a relationship of
"respected equals" in which each partner can take turns victimizing the
  other in ritual harm.
Then there is the contribution to spiritual understanding by Chicago
Theological Seminary's Ken Stone: "You Seduced Me, You Overpowered Me, and
You Prevailed: Religious Experience and Homoerotic Sadomasochism in
  Jeremiah."
"(Jeremiah 20:7-18) can be construed more usually as a kind of ritual
S/M encounter between the male deity Yahweh and his male devotee," writes
  Stone, who,

Mere treaties do not supersede the organic
law of the United states of America, for then
any treaty could nullify the entire Constitution.

As the Constitution cannot be negated by a treaty,
neither can any portion thereof.

Treaties, that secure or advance the rights to be secured
by the Constitution, are constitutional, all else are not.

Just suppose the senate would ratify it. That, my friends, would be

Anybody know where to see a copy of this proposed treaty?

Many Helped Iraq Evade
U.N. Sanctions On Weapons
By Craig Whitlock and Glenn FrankelWashington Post Foreign
ServiceFriday, October 8, 2004; Page A01

BERLIN, Oct. 7 -- As part of its stealth effort to evade U.N. sanctions and
rebuild its military, the Iraqi government under President Saddam Hussein found
that it had no shortage of people around the world who were willing to help.
Among them: a French arms dealer known only as "Mr. Claude," who made a
surreptitious visit to Iraq four years ago to provide technical expertise and
training.
Mr. Claude worked for Lura, a French company that sold tank carriers to Iraq,
according to documents recovered by the top U.S. weapons inspector in Iraq. The
mysterious Frenchman may have also helped the Iraqis attempt to acquire
military-related radar and microwave technology, despite a U.N. ban on such
trade with Iraq since the end of the 1991 Persian Gulf War.
Other French military contractors came to Baghdad with offers to supply the
Iraqi government with helicopters, spare parts for fighter aircraft and air
defense systems after 1998, when U.N. weapons inspectors withdrew under
pressure, according to a report issued this week by Charles A. Duelfer, the
chief U.S. weapons inspector. The report cites evidence that contacts between
the French suppliers and Hussein's government continued until last year, less
than one month before the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq.
While not denying that the transfers took place, a spokesman for the French
Foreign Ministry, Herve Ladsous, said the accusations "were not verified either
with the people themselves or with the authorities of the countries concerned,"
according to the Associated Press.
The French were hardly alone in helping Hussein to reinvigorate his military
forces during the 12 years that Iraq was under strict U.N. sanctions. Arm
dealers and military suppliers from the former Eastern Bloc -- Russia, Poland,
Romania, Belarus and Ukraine -- provided critical assistance to Iraq as it tried
to build a long-range missile program and other systems that weapons inspectors
feared could have been used someday to launch chemical, biological or even
nuclear attacks.
"It was well known within the U.S. government that individuals and companies
were selling Iraq various kinds of prohibited items," said Gary Samore, a
nonproliferation specialist in the Clinton administration who now works as an
analyst for the London-based International Institute for Strategic Studies.
While the United States sought to shut down suppliers through diplomatic and
other means, Samore said, it was common knowledge that Iraq was able to bypass
sanctions by buying in small quantities and paying high prices, using a network
of front companies in Jordan, Syria and other countries in the Middle East.
"The world is awash in conventional arms, and every time there's been an arms
embargo on a country they've been able to circumvent it," he said. "It's much
more difficult to buy more exotic technologies like nuclear weapons, but there
are so many private dealers and corrupt state entities, especially in the former
Soviet Union. The best you can do is slow down sales, obstruct them or make it
more expensive."
Numerous other nations bought and sold on the Iraqi military shopping
network, including such dictatorships as North Korea and the former Yugoslavia
before the downfall of President Slobodan Milosevic. While some of the countries
were politically friendly with or sympathetic to Iraq, the biggest motivation
was usually money, according to Duelfer's report to the CIA.
"As long as the regime had enough cash to pay for these items, it really
wouldn't have been too much of a problem to obtain these things and smuggle them
in," said Jeremy Binnie, Middle East editor for Jane's Sentinel Security
Assessments, a London-based magazine. "It just takes people with enough money
and the ability to find the right contacts to get their hands on this
stuff."
The Iraqi pipeline extended to four countries -- Bulgaria, Poland, Romania
and Ukraine -- that later sent troops to Iraq to join the U.S.-led military
coalition.
In Poland, Iraqi intelligence officers helped set up a front company called
Ewex, which obtained engines and guidance components for surface-to-air missiles
from Polish scrap dealers and middlemen who scoured military surplus stockpiles
for the parts, the report said.
U.S. inspectors estimated that Iraq bought about 280 engines from Poland from
2001 to 2003 with the intent of using them to equip a new missile that violated
U.N. range limits. The engines had been removed from Polish missiles
decommissioned after the Cold War.
Polish authorities arrested some Ewex executives in 2003

ACTION ALERT

October 7, 2004

The U.S. House is debating and will soon vote on H.R. 10, the 9/11
Recommendations Implementation Act. This 542-page bill is so full of
hastily- and ill-conceived anti-gun, anti-freedom provisions (Larry
Pratt, Gun Owners of America) that you would need hours to learn them
all. But thanks to an exhaustive analysis done by Gun Owners of
America, we know the following critical points:

1. H.R. 10 takes the final step to establish the driver's license as a
national ID card.
2. H.R. 10 authorizes the establishment of an enormous database
containing personal information on American citizens.

H.R. 10-SECTION 3052 (NATIONAL ID): This section would take the final
step toward establishing the driver's license as a national ID card.
Attorneys from groups ranging from the conservative Gun Owners of
America and the National Taxpayers Union to the liberal American Civil
Liberties Union have reached the same conclusion.

As the Washington Times reported today, More than 30 advocacy, civil
liberties and conservative groups sent letters to every senator Sept.
20 predicting that the September 11 commission report would lead to a
national ID card and asked that it be rejected. H.R. 10 contains a
national ID card provision, section 3052.

H.R. 10SECTION 2173 (NATIONAL DATABASES): This section would
explicitly authorize an enormous national database of private
information on American citizens; including financial records and,
potentially, medical records. And -- to the very end -- regulators
fought to be allowed to maintain this database, not just on suspected
terrorists, but on every American.

In addition to creating a national ID card and database:

1. H.R. 10 will seek more integration of our foreign policy with that
of the U.N. (Section 4032).
2. H.R. 10 will train U.S. diplomats to be more attuned with the
United Nations and the Organization for Security and Cooperation in
Europe (OSCE) and other anti-democratic globalist organizations
(Section 4034). The OSCE will be sending over 100 foreign observers
to monitor the U.S. elections on Nov. 2, as reported by the Washington
Times today.
3. H.R. 10 will create a new U.S. ambassador-at-large to work with
U.N. nongovernmental organizations or NGOs. This would set a very
dangerous precedent (Section 4035).

We could go on, but won't.

According to Congressman Ron Paul, The 9-11 Recommendation
Implementation bill (HR 10) is yet another attempt to address the
threat of terrorism by giving more money and power to the federal
bureaucracy. The result of most of the reforms contained in this bill
will not likely be a safer America, but will definitely be a less free
America.

And as Larry Pratt of Gun Owners of America stated, ...this bill is
not about 'security' or 'terrorism,' but about political posturing in
an election year - at the expense of individual liberties.

We strongly oppose H.R. 10 and ask you to urge your U.S.
representative to vote no on final passage of H.R. 10. To send your
message, go to http://capwiz.com/liberty/issues/alert/?alertid=6525316type=CO

[CTRL] Bush And Kerry, Kramden And Norton: Some Handshakes Are More Secret Than Others

Bush And Kerry, Kramden And Norton: Some Handshakes Are More Secret Than Others
October 6, 2004

Dear Mr. President, As you face your second debate Friday, here's some advice: Look to the handshake. Beware of the secret handshake.

President George W. Bush and Sen. John F. Kerry are the first presidential candidates running against each other who both were members of Yale University's most elite secret society, Skull and Bones. They are, in the words of the SB society, Bonesmen, joining the ranks of Bush's grandfather Sen. Prescott Bush; and father, President George H.W. Bush; the late Sen. John Heinz (Kerry's wife Teresa's first husband); Time publisher Henry Luce; and President William H. Taft.

Skull and Bones is shrouded in secrecy, and even under Tim Russert's grilling last year on "Meet the Press," neither Kerry nor Bush would weaken and divulge any of the society's rituals.

"It's so secret, we can't talk about it," Bush told Russert.

But the way that Bush fell apart from the get-go in the debate suggests that perhaps the president was under a Skull and Bones spell, courtesy of Kerry.

Kerry approached Bush, placed his left hand on the small of the president's back, shook hands with his right - to the uninitiated eye, it all looked very normal.

Java tried to find out if this was, indeed, a Skull and Bones mesmerizing moment but only reached a few knowledgeable Yalies. Former Hartford lawyer John Murtha, a member of the rival Scroll and Key Society at Yale, seemed familiar with the Skull and Bones exchange but would not betray his own handshake nor that of the Bonesmen.

"A secret handshake was part of a ritual," Murtha said. "Theirs was pretty much the same as ours. I'm not going to get into it. But even if I could, I wouldn't."

But he did say it in Eli-style, ever so politely.

WTIC-AM (1080) personality and Yale graduate Colin McEnroe also did not get tapped for Skull and Bones but did make the Egg and Spoon Society, which he said "only met for breakfast."

He doesn't know about the Skull and Bones handshake, but he did say this: "I'm guessing it involves more than the hand. It is my understanding that Skull and Bones members like to touch each other's buttocks."

Personally, I would feel more comfortable with candidates who were members of a less elitist group, like the International Order of Friendly Sons of the Raccoons, with members in good standing like Ralph Kramden and Ed Norton.

Bus driver Kramden (Jackie Gleason) and sewer worker Norton (Art Carney) belonged to that fraternity on the TV show "The Honeymooners," and they weren't at all shy about divulging their official greeting.

They touched elbows, first right, then left, followed by a "Wooo" sounding cry as they wiggled the raccoon tail on their coonskin hats. They ended by chorusing, "Brothers under the pelt."

Not only would this society be less secretive than Skull and Bones, it also would be much more entertaining to see the candidates interact by wiggling their raccoon tails.

There is also a Friendly Sons of the Raccoons drinking toast that Bush and Kerry could recite when they reach for a glass of water under the podium: "Fingers to fingers, thumbs to thumbs, watch out below, here she comes."

Should one rise to be Raccoon of the Year in the organization, there are several privileges, including: opening the first clam at the annual clambake; free burial, with spouse, at Raccoon National Cemetery in Bismark, N.D.; throwing the first bag of water out of the hotel window at the Raccoon convention.

Tell me that doesn't beat "Hail to the Chief," Secret Service and having friends sleep over in the Lincoln Bedroom.

Abbey's Set Delayed In Customs

Uncertain that the set for the Abbey Theatre's production of J.M. Synge's "The Playboy of the Western World" could clear U.S. customs in time, the Shubert Theater in New Haven scratched its first performance slated for Thursday night. The rest of the Friday-to-Sunday run will take place, said a spokesman for the theater. The New Haven run was the first stop in a two-month U.S. tour for the Irish theater, which is celebrating its 100th year.

The production will play the Shubert Friday and Saturday at 8 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m. The tour will also play the Rich Forum at the Stamford Center for the Arts Oct. 19 to 24.

-Caveat Lector-
Dear 9-11 Truth Activists,
I received an interesting phone call from a woman who claims to have
managed to penetrate Al Qaeda, years ago, not realizing who they were,
and figure out their attack codes. They sent her cookies (computer) which
allowed her to access some secret military plans on military websites. Her
warnings of attacks on New York (poison gas in the subways) earned her
respect from the NY Transportation Authorities, who thwarted the attacks,
and she was given Tom Ridge and other officials private phone numbers.
Only later did she realize that Al Qaeda,...the guys she was in
communication with, were fake Muslims-connected with the US
Military/CIA... and after she figured that out, and laid out what she
knew of their plans to them; they cut off communication with her, and she
has come under personal attack.
She has figured out the next major 9-11 style attack will be on Novemeber
1st or 5th with nukes in various locations (although there is also a
possibility of a rush job on October 8th- but I don't know much about
those specifics).
Some of what she received/found is in Arabic and needs to be translated...
Here's part of an earlier e-mail she sent me
the family took a bunch of afghan orphans back in the 80's and made
them into the crux of 'al qaeda'. the orphans were approx. 5-10 yrs. old
then and are now in their 20's/30's. they were made into soul less
killing machines as was seen in the russian school incident recently
(note children/parents put inside of a sacrificial circle of
bombs). these people think they are the original lost tribe of egypt and
everyone else should be eliminated. as a result they have planned to
nuke chicago (navy pier), los angeles (3rd st. promenade), san francisco
(union park) and n.y.c. (jefferson market park) , london and sydney in a
triple attack with use of nuclear suitcase bombs in lead lined
freezers. they are also looking into what they call an 'ominous valve'
attack on indian point nuclear power plant, oyster creek nuclear power
plant and possibly seabrook and vt. yankee. cnn showed an entourage of
rubber duckies floating past indian point on 9-19 which symbolized us
being the 'ugly ducklings' whereas they call themselves 'black swans'.
there are 5 nukes that are 100 megaton and 2 that are 10 megaton plus on
8-29 a taiwan co. involved in this with a japanese and so. korean co.
paid $500,000.00 (double sea shipping price) to get the largest cargo
plane in the world, the Russian Antonov 225 to allegedly ship a 210 ton
machine from germany to taiwan to speed up production of video monitors
by 40 days (symbolic moses 40 days/nights wandering tribe). in actuality

Triumph of the stultocracy
Voters should pass a political literacy test

By: Ted Rall 10/06/2004

"Kerry doesn't know what the working-class people do; he hasn't done any physical labor all his life," Sharon Alfman, a 51-year-old cook in New Lexington, Ohio, told a New York Times reporter. It's true. Kerry is a rich boy. But then she added: "Bush's values are middle-class family values."
George W. Bush earned $727,000 last year. Estimates of his net worth range between $9 million and $26 million. Middle class he most assuredly is not. Working class he never has been. Like fellow Skull and Bones member John Kerry, man of the people he never will be. But it matters that Sharon Altman thinks he is. Unless you too are a voter living in a swing state like Ohio, her vote counts more than yours.
Demonstrating that stupefying ignorance can be bipartisan, another Ohioan interviewed for the same article said she is against the war in Iraq because, like 42 percent of her fellow Americans, she thinks Iraq was behind 9/11: "We shouldn't be over there building them back up because they didn't build our towers back up." She is wrong on so many levels that it makes my brain hurt.
Both women are entitled to their unawareness. We can't pass a law to force them to read the paper. But neither of these people ought to force their fellow citizens to suffer the consequences of their being so uninformed. Voting should be a privilege earned by an intellectually engaged citizen, not a right given to any adult with a pulse.
All men are created equal, declared the Founders. But as Alexis de Tocqueville wrote in "Democracy in America," universal suffrage counts upon the existence of a responsible, well-educated citizenry in order to result in political equality. If you give the vote to morons, you get the "tyranny of the masses"- a lumpen proletariat prone to manipulation by demagogues and fools - such as that which created chaos and bloodshed in post-revolutionary France. We're all equal at birth, but what we do later determines whether or not our opinions are worthwhile.
At this writing, the world's greatest nation flails under the rule of buffoons and madmen, bogged down in two optional wars we're actually losing. The world's richest economy is shedding jobs, running up debts and building nothing for the future. Voters, offered an election year alternative to the subliterate idiot who single-handedly created this mess, spurn him for a leader even dumber than they are. America has become a stultocracy: government by morons, for morons.
A 2002 poll found that 64 percent of Americans - people whose votes help determine how much you pay in taxes - could not name a single Supreme Court justice. In 2003, 58 percent - people whose votes could elect someone who starts a nuclear war - couldn't identify a single department of the president's cabinet. Voters aged 18 to 24, whose recent schooling ought to inspire confidence in their knowledge of basic facts, are especially ignorant.
National Geographic says that 85 percent of young American adults can't find Afghanistan, Iraq or Israel on a map.
The fact that these yahoos are allowed to vote is an abomination. Their ill-considered ballots cancel or dilute those cast by those who do the heavy lifting that makes them good citizens: keeping abreast of current events, researching issues, studying candidates' positions.
In the Old South, literacy tests were used to disenfranchise blacks. Alternatively, a basic political literacy test should be used to ensure that anyone who picks ESPN over CNN - regardless of race or creed - stays home on Election Day. Prospective voters should be required to answer at least three of the following questions correctly; to give people a fair shot, the test should be published in newspapers a week before an election:
1. Who is the vice president?
2. What is your state capital?
3. Name one of the following: your governor, congressman or one senator.
4. What is the capital of the United States?
5. Name one federal cabinet-level department.
Of course, such a political literacy test would drastically reduce voter turnout. On the other hand, those who pass could take comfort in knowing that they're not competing against the 60 percent of Americans who think we've found Iraq's imaginary WMDs, or the 22 percent who "believe" that Saddam Hussein used such weapons against U.S. troops during the 2003 invasion.

Bush's character, beliefs formed in years at Andover, Yale

BY WILLIAM DOUGLAS

Knight Ridder Newspapers

WASHINGTON - (KRT) - Seeing President Bush rally people with a bullhorn from atop the mound of rubble where the World Trade Center used to be reminded Tom Seligson of Bush in a more innocent time.
"When I saw him after 9-11 with the bullhorn, it fit," said Seligson, who attended prep school with Bush. "His response to terrorism was grabbing a bullhorn at Ground Zero, basically challenging us to rise above it. This was no different from the George - the cheerleader with a megaphone at Andover - of 40 years ago."
But the Bush known then by his classmates at the exclusive prep school and at Yale University and the Bush known now around the world are two distinct figures - one seemingly carefree and privileged, the other burdened by the pressures of the Oval Office.
Yet those early years - from Bush's entry into Andover in 1961 to his graduation from Yale in 1968 - did much to shape his character and form beliefs that many said he took to the White House.
"Andover and Yale, in many ways, have a greater import in shaping the core personality of Bush than any other period," said Bill Minutaglio, the author of "First Son: George W. Bush and the Bush Family Dynasty." "It not only shaped his worldview as an adult and his public policy as a politician. If Bush's policy is about going it alone, defining the world in black and white, you could say it started back then."
George W. Bush was called many things during his high school and collegiate days but future president of the United States wasn't one of them.
He was nicknamed "Lip" by Andover classmates for his wisecracking ways at the then-all-boys Massachusetts boarding school. He dubbed himself "Tweeds Bush" - after the infamous Boss Tweed of New York Tammany Hall fame - while others called him the "High Commissioner of Stickball" for organizing teams to play rollicking games on the usually staid campus.
His teachers called him an earnest but unspectacular student; he earned a zero on the first paper he wrote at Andover for using a word that appalled the professor.
Despite his family's political pedigree, few people saw any sign in young George of an ambition to end up in the White House. What they saw was a fun-loving fraternity prankster more interested in partying than politics, and a person eager to shed the shadow of his father.
Some Bush friends think that's overly simplistic. They say his affability overshadowed his intelligence and obscured the budding political skills that he employs today: an ability to get people to like and support him, a knack for organization and a fierce determination to stand firm in his beliefs.
"He's very street-smart, and people always underestimate him," said Lanny Davis, a Yale fraternity brother of Bush's who went on to help President Clinton through several White House scandals. "He was one of the friendliest, most down to earth, unpretentious people at Yale," said Davis, who likes Bush personally but loathes his policies.
Bush's path from adolescence to adulthood began in the same place as his father's: Phillips Academy in Andover, Mass. The elder George Bush was a campus legend: senior class president, captain of the baseball team and a student who bucked the advice of Secretary of War Henry Stimson, Andover's 1942 commencement speaker, and put off college to enlist in the Navy and enter World War II.
Bush the father was a man of New England, the son of Sen. Prescott Bush of Connecticut. Though George W. Bush also was born in Connecticut, he was very much a child of Texas, having been raised in Midland and Houston.
When the 15-year-old Bush arrived at Phillips in 1961, he found the transition from Texas to New England daunting in terms of climate and attitude.
"Andover was cold and distant and difficult," Bush wrote in his political biography, "A Charge to Keep." "In every way I was a long way from home."
Bush said he had to adjust from the "happy chaos" of the Bush household in Texas to Andover's discipline.
"We wore coats and ties to class," he wrote. "We went to chapel every day, except Wednesday and Saturday. There were no girls. Life was regimented. ... I missed my parents and brothers and sister. It was a shock to my system."
Bush also was struggling in class. For his first essay - on emotions - he wanted to impress his "eastern professors" by using "big, impressive words." Looking for a way to describe "tears" running down his face, he consulted the Roget's Thesaurus that his mother had given him. He replaced "tears" with the word "lacerates."
The teacher marked the paper with a zero so bold that "it left an impression all the way through the back of the blue book," Bush wrote.
Tom Lyons, who taught history and was one of Bush's favorite teachers at

  Saddam
paid off French leadersBy Bill GertzTHE WASHINGTON
  TIMESPublished October 7, 2004

Saddam Hussein used a U.N. humanitarian program to pay $1.78 billion to
French government officials, businessmen and journalists in a bid to have
sanctions removed and U.S. policies opposed, according to a CIA report
made public yesterday. The cash was part of
$10.9 billion secretly skimmed from the U.N. oil-for-food program, which
was used by Iraq to buy military goods, according to a 1,000-page report
by the CIA-led Iraqi Survey Group. According
to a section of the report on Iraqi weapons procurement, the survey group
identified long-standing ties between Saddam and the French government.
One 1992 Iraqi intelligence service report revealed that Iraq's ambassador
to France paid $1 million to the French Socialist Party in 1988.
The CIA report stated that the Iraqi
ambassador was instructed to "utilize [the $1 million] to remind French
Defense Minister Pierre Joxe indirectly about Iraq's previous positions
toward France, in general, and the French Socialist party, in particular."
In the late 1990s, Iraq also used an
oil-purchasing voucher system through the U.N. oil-for-food program, which
began in 1996 and ended in 2003, to influence the French to oppose U.S.
initiatives at the United Nations and to work to lift sanctions, the
report stated. The Iraqi Intelligence Service
paid off French nationals by dispensing vouchers that allowed the holders
to make hundreds of thousands of dollars in commissions by selling them to
oil buyers. The payoffs help explain why the
French government, along with Russia and China, opposed U.S. efforts in
the United Nations in the months leading up to the March 2003 invasion,
U.S. officials said. Iraqi intelligence agents
also targeted French President Jacques Chirac, by giving gifts to a
spokesman, two of his aides and two French businessmen, the report said.
One Iraqi intelligence report stated that a
French politician assured Saddam in a letter that France would use its
veto in the U.N. Security Council against any U.S. effort to attack Iraq.
Iraqi intelligence documents recovered in Iraq
showed that the French citizens linked to the influence operation were
"ministers and politicians, journalists and business people."
  "These influential individuals often had
little prior connection to the oil industry and generally engaged European
oil companies to lift the oil, but were still in a position to extract a
substantial profit for themselves," the report said.
Former Iraqi Deputy Prime Minister Tariq Aziz
told the Survey Group that he personally awarded several Frenchmen
  "substantial" oil allotments. "According to
Aziz, both parties understood that resale of the oil was to be
reciprocated through efforts to lift U.N. sanctions or through opposition
to American initiatives within the Security Council," the report said.
The report named former French Interior
Minister Charles Pascua as getting a voucher for 11 million barrels of
oil, and Patrick Maugein, who received a voucher for 13 million barrels of
oil. The report said Mr. Maugein, the chief executive officer of the SOCO
oil company, was a "conduit" to Mr. Chirac.
Michel Grimard, the founder of the
French-Iraqi Export Club, received a voucher for 5.5 million barrels, and
the Iraqi-French Friendship Society received vouchers for more than 10
million barrels. French oil companies Total
and SOCAP were granted vouchers for 105 million and 93 million barrels of
oil, respectively. The report stated that Iraq
covertly purchased missiles and other military goods from Russia, Belarus,
China, North Korea and South Korea. According
to the report, illegal goods used in making weapons of mass destruction
were sold to Iraq by companies in Jordan, India, France, Italy, Romania
and Turkey. Conventional arms also were sold
to Iraq by China, Jordan, India, South Korea, Bulgaria, Ukraine, Cyprus,
Egypt, Lebanon, Georgia, France, Poland, Syria, Belarus, North Korea,
Yugoslavia, Yemen, Russia, Romania and the Republic of China (Taiwan).
The report said Saddam's regime obtained $1.5
  billion from U.N. humanitarian contract

Dear Friends:

This is very urgent for you to look at.

http://www.indymedia.org/en/2004/10/111999.shtml

The FBI shut down a host of Indy Media sites world
wide by demanding the hard drives for these sites.

We are seeing the US Government shut down freedom all
over the world, has nothing to do with democracy, but
rather a turning of the back on democracy.

There are increasing fears that a near election
crisis will be created and that human rights will go

[CTRL] Riley / von Kleist disinfo ops

2004-10-08 Thread Brian Salter

since posting a critique of the video 911 in plane site, from dave von kleist and joyce riley of 'powerhour', to my site (questionsquestions.net), i've been informed by a few people about a controversy over their role in gulf war vets' issues and gulf war illness. they have been facing accusations of being disinfo agents for some time, and the evidence seems pretty strong. the main person pursuing this is a lawyer named linda kennedy, who actually used to be a personal assistant to riley and von kleist, but then came out with an expos earlier this year after splitting with them and making some ugly discoveries. it looks like the two have connections to FBI, possibly MI, and an openly admitted connection to the southern poverty law center, which has well known connections to ADL and FBI. they have also been denounced by peter kawaja who accuses them of hijacking and covering up the gulf war illness info that he originally discovered. riley's background is particularly suspect. but this is not an area that i'm well informed on, so if anyone has been following this and knows the background, i'd welcome additional info opinions. if kennedy's allegations hold up, it would seem to reveal some reasons why riley and von kleist whipped up their bogus 911 video to try and hijack a new issue...

quoted from first link above:

When Dessert Storm finally started (invasion of Kuwaitby coalition forces), in 1/91, another silent raid was also occurring. While we were busy watching the war on CNN, Kawajawas being raided by federal agents, by gun point. All the evidence at his home was confiscatedand sealed under the War Powers Act. Fortunately, Kawaja had enough evidence elsewhere to still hold thegovernment accountable for war crimes, if someone would listen (of course the courts would not).

Not satisfied that they confiscated all Kawajas evidence, the government triedfooling Kawaja into thinking they were going to prosecute Barbouti. They would hold phony grand jury proceedings, with Kawaja as their star witness, further trying to get Kawajas remain ingevidence. They still could not getit. By about 1994, Kawaja was still seton holding these criminals accountable for their actions against the Americanpeople and our Veterans. He filed alawsuit against the government trying to expose these atrocities, which of course the governmentwanted to get dismissed quickly and quietly (page two). The Department of Defense also started itsown suit in Kawajas name to try to stop this evidence from getting to Americans, and attempted to control the prosecutionto make sure this case was never actually heard. In March of 1995, the government claimed thatthe litigation that Kawaja brought against it was improper claiming that, Kawaja apparently wants to direct the course of the criminal investigation. Rather, the AUSA and agents should bepermitted to continue their investigation into these important matters, withoutthe constraint of pressure of this litigation. . . in spite of theiractually being no real ongoing investigation (documented elsewhere).

By now, theGulf War Illness was breaking, with many sick and dying Vets suffering, and withthe government denying there was such a thing as a Gulf War Illness. Of course, this is with the U.S. Government being fully aware that they caused the illness to occur through their actionsand foreknowledge. In addition to goingthrough these governmental abuses, Kawaja also suffered through his wife beingkilled, his house being burned down, and the IRS coming after him to make surehe would never have any money to pursue any further action against them. Finally, he had been pursuing the hardfiles which were the 400,000-700,000 missing files of sick gulf warveterans. When the Murrah building wentdown, so did the files, which were housed there. Of course, the government could not get ridof that building fast enough, nor could it put McVeigh, the government patsy,to death quickly enough. Case closed.

The government also gave Kawaja another very important warning: If Kawaja continued to bring forth this litigation and exposure, the government would

FBI Seizes news outlet's servers From theregister, "The FBI yesterday seized a pair of UK servers used by Indymedia (http://www.indymedia.org), the independent newsgathering collective, after serving a subpoena in the US on Indymedia's hosting firm, Rackspace. Why or how remains unclear." This is not the first assault on indymedia's technical infrastructure. -- Space Technology Editor
Feds seize Indymedia servers
By John Leyden (john.leyden at theregister.co.uk)Published Friday 8th October 2004 18:44 GMTOriginal URL: http://www.theregister.co.uk/2004/10/08/fbi_indymedia_raids/

The FBI yesterday seized a pair of UK servers used by Indymedia (http://www.indymedia.org), the independent newsgathering collective, after serving a subpoena in the US on Indymedia's hosting firm, Rackspace. Why or how remains unclear.
Rackspace UK complied with a legal order and handed over hard disks without first notifying Indymedia. It's unclear if the raid was executed under extra-territorial provisions of US legislation or the UK's Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act (RIPA). Provisions of RIPA make it a criminal offence to discuss warrants, so Rackspace would not be able to discuss the action with its customer Indymedia, or with the media.

Rackspace US has issued a statement which says that the investigation "did not arise in the United States", but which sheds very little light on the whys and the wherefores.
In the present matter regarding Indymedia, Rackspace Managed Hosting, a US based company with offices in London, is acting in compliance with a court order pursuant to a Mutual Legal Assistance Treaty (MLAT), which establishes procedures for countries to assist each other in investigations such as international terrorism, kidnapping and money laundering. Rackspace responded to a Commissioners subpoena, duly issued under Title 28, United States Code, Section 1782 in an investigation that did not arise in the United States. Rackspace is acting as a good corporate citizen and is cooperating with international law enforcement authorities. The court prohibits Rackspace from commenting further on this matter."
Dai Davis, an IT lawyer at London law firm Nabarro Nathanson, said Rackspace's statement fails to clarify the legal basis of the raid.

"If it was a RIPA warrant, Rackspace can't refer to it. Most RIPA warrants can be issued by the Home Secretary," he said. "The FBI has no jurisdiction in the UK and would need to act in concert with UK authorities, such as the security services or police," he added.

Net effect
The seizure of Indymedia's servers affects more than 30 Indymedia sites worldwide. The list of affected local media collectives includes Uruguay, Andorra, Poland, Nice, several French groups, Euskal Herria (Basque Country), multiple Belgian sites, Serbia, Portugal, the Czech Republic, Italy, Brazil, the UK, part of the Germany site, and the global Indymedia Radio site. one of the servers taken down at Rackspace provided streaming radio to several radio stations and served files related to the Blag Linux distribution, among other purposes.

While Indymedia is not exactly sure what prompted the action, the group does have one strong idea. A French Indymedia site last month posted photos of what it believed to be undercover Swiss police officers photographing protesters at a French event. Indymedia received a request from the FBI to pull those photos down, as they "revealed personal information" about the undercover police, said Indymedia press officer Hep Sano.
"They never clarified what they meant by personal information," she said. "The photos were taken on a public street."
Indymedia believes the photos were eventually pulled, but ironically cannot check on this as it no longer has access to the servers or hard

The Decoy or the Duck
Michael Ratner, Margaret Ratner, Chip Berlet and Dr. Ann Mari Buitrago saw it coming from the beginning. The only problem was that for the longest time they couldn't tell which direction it was coming from.

The Ratners worked at the Center for Constitutional Rights, a public interest group of liberal and left-wing lawyers based in lower Manhattan. For them, as well as for Berlet, a political researcher who had been involved in cases involving the FBI and the Chicago Red Squad, and Buitrago, one of the country's foremost experts in the use of the Freedom of Information Act, the election of Ronald Reagan began to raise alarms as early as the winter of 1980. They were concerned not only about the candidate's rhetoric but about the composition of his transition team and the Heritage Foundation recommendations for strengthening the nation's domestic intelligence apparatus.

In general, however, those early signs were dismissed, if not ignored, as left-wing paranoia. The leadership of the Washington office of the American Civil Liberties Union, for instance, declared that civil liberties and government surveillance would not be significant issues in the 1980s. Instead, it argued, the emphasis of the Reagan Administration would be almost exclusively economic-and the battles of the coming years would involve issues of economic justice and the rights of the poor rather than issues of free speech and civil liberties. In fact, Morton Halperin, of the ACLU, accused attorneys at the Center for Constitutional Rights of raising a specter of alarmism without giving the administration an opportunity to prove that it was not bent on subverting the intelligence and law enforcement communities to do its political bidding.

But while the Ratners, Berlet and Buitrago were concerned about what they saw as the coming crackdown on political freedom, it was not the FBI that first caught their attention, but a new Senate committee-the Subcommittee on Security and Terrorism (SST - which was created by the incoming Republican majority in Congress to focus public attention on the threat of international terrorism and the peril of domestic subversion.

Created as a subcommittee of the Senate Judiciary Committee, the SST was staffed by Senators Orrin Hatch of Utah and John East of North Carolina, and headed by Alabama Senator Jeremiah Denton, a member of the Moral Majority who spent seven years as a prisoner of war in a Vietnamese prison camp. Along with Senator Jesse Helms, East, Hatch and Denton believed that the greatest threat to the United States was the danger of "creeping communism." And, to that end, the committee set j out to expose the danger of internal subversion.

The Terrorism Cover
In his opening address at the first meeting of the subcommittee in 1981, Denton declared: "The subcommittee plans to investigate certain organizations which, within the United States, engage in, or have engaged in acts of terrorism, including bombings, acts of sabotage, aircraft hijacking, armed assaults and homicides."'

But the political implications of Denton's proclamation came clear in short order when staffers in Hatch's office leaked the fact that the SST planned to investigate, among others, three left-liberal institutions that had never been associated with terrorism or violence of

'Staggering Amount' of Cash Missing In Iraq
By: Emad Mekay
Inter Press Service News AgencyWASHINGTON - Three U.S. senators have called on Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld to account for 8.8 billion dollars entrusted to the Coalition Provisional Authority (CPA) in Iraq earlier this year but now gone missing.
In a letter Thursday, Senators Ron Wyden of Oregon, Byron L Dorgan of North Dakota and Tom Harkin of Iowa, all opposition Democrats, demanded a "full, written account" of the money that was channeled to Iraqi ministries and authorities by the CPA, which was the governing body in the occupied country until Jun. 30.
The loss was uncovered in an audit by the CPA's inspector general. It has not yet been released publicly and was initially reported on the website of journalist and retired U.S. Army Col David Hackworth.
The CPA was terminated at the end of July to make way for an interim Iraqi government, which is in turn scheduled to be replaced by an elected body early in 2005.
"We are requesting a full, written account of the 8.8 billion dollars transferred earlier this year from the CPA to the Iraqi ministries, including the amount each ministry received and the way in which the ministry spent the money," said the letter.
The senators also requested that the Pentagon designate a date by which it will install adequate oversight and financial and contractual controls over money it spends in Iraq.
They accused the CPA of transferring the "staggering sum of money" with no written rules or guidelines to ensure adequate control over it.
They pointed to "disturbing findings" from the inspector general's report that the payrolls of some Iraqi ministries, then under CPA control, were padded with thousands of ghost employees. They refer to an example in which CPA paid the salaries of 74,000 security guards although the actual number of employees could not be validated.
The report says that in one case some 8,000 guards were listed on a payroll but only 603 real individuals could be counted.
"Such enormous discrepancies raise very serous questions about potential fraud, waste and abuse," added the letter.
This is not the first time that U.S. financial conduct in Iraq has come under fire, specifically over funds slated for reconstruction after the U.S.-led attack in March 2003, which thU.S.-led attack in March 2003, which then went unaccounted for.
In June, British charity Christian Aid said at least 20 billion dollars in oil revenues and other Iraqi funds intended to rebuild the country have disappeared from banks administered by the CPA.
Watchdog groups have complained before about the opaque nature of the CPA's handling of Iraqi money and the lack of transparency of U.S. and Iraqi officials.
Halliburton, a giant U.S. company that has been awarded 8.2 billion dollars worth of contracts from the Defense department to provide support services such as meals, shelter, laundry and Internet connections for U.S. soldiers in Iraq, has been targeted for allegedly overcharging for those services.
"Continued failures to account for funds, such as the 8.8 billion dollars of concern here - and the refusal, so far, of the Pentagon to take corrective action are a disservice to the American taxpayer, the Iraqi people and to our men and women in uniform," the senators wrote.
Groups critical of the lack of transparency in the CPA's spending have been particularly angry that the authority used Iraqi money to pay for questionable contracts -- some awarded without a public tendering process -- with U.S. companies.
Washington initially restricted the most lucrative reconstruction contracts in Iraq to gigantic U.S. firms that appeared able to reap huge profits, fueling accusations the Bush administration was

The Daily Texan - Opinion Issue: 9/1/04

Bill attacks Kazaa, independent mediaBy Brian Boyko Last Wednesday, Attorney General John Ashcroft announced"Operation Digital Gridlock," - which targeted five alleged file-sharers, and the next day, he announced "Operation Web Snare," which took aim at other alleged computer criminals. This new emphasis on computer crime from the Justice Department may have something to do with the recent 9th District Circuit Court of Appeals ruling in the MGM v. Grokster case. Less than a week before Ashcroft started talking about "cybercrime," the 9th Circuit - the same court that shut down Napster [the very court just dismantled by Republican vote]- decided Aug. 19 that file-sharing application manufacturers Grokster and Streamcast could not be held liable for the copyright infringement of their users. The ruling was based partially on the precedent of Sony v. Betamax, which established that a technological device that has both legitimate and copyright infringing uses (for example, a VCR) is not itself illegal, even if people could potentially use it for illegal acts. In the case of peer-to-peer technology, there are plenty of examples of non-infringing uses. Established bands such as Wilco use peer-to-peer in order to increase publicity, local bands use it to increase exposure to a wider audience, and small filmmakers use it to bypass the theater distribution chain. But perhaps more significantly, peer-to-peer is an efficient and effective method of distributing news. Last Saturday in Manhattan, political activist Joshua Kinsburg, was arrested while demonstrating an invention for MSNBC reporter Ron Reagan. The video of his arrest was made available on the Internet via BitTorrent technology. BitTorrent allows users to distribute or download large files over limited bandwidth using peer-to-peer networking. Whether or not you agree with Kinsburg's message or methods, the First Amendment implications of the new technology are significant. Through peer-to-peer technology, not only can we get more information and enable smaller media - like college television stations - to increase their distribution to a wider audience, we can also solve more immediate problems. New York University unveiled a public beta of its web caching peer-to-peer program called "Coral" last Saturday. Coral uses the same general idea behind BitTorrent to enable access to Web sites even when the server is overloaded by distributing the bandwidth among many peers instead of a single server. This is a boon to smaller Web sites, including small newspapers and alternative press. The idea that smaller press might soon be able to offer more choice and more information than the hyper-consolidated big media should be cause for celebration. But big-media consolidation is incredibly good for the party currently in power. When there are only a handful of media organizations - most of them slacking off in their job to report the news - it is far easier for the powerful to manipulate the media than when there are a large variety of diverse voices and a large number of investigating reporters. The decision of the 9th Circuit established that peer-to-peer applications like BitTorrent and Coral are legal according to copyright law. So, having lost the case on its merits, the media companies have decided to try to change the law. Sen. Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, who received $168,928 in campaign contributions from television, movie, and music companies for the 2004 fund-raising cycle, is currently pushing a bill called the "Inducing Infringement of Copyrights Act of 2004" - formerly known as the INDUCE Act. Superficially, it would make file-trading networks

The Illuminati-StagedUS Presidential Election
By Michael ShoreIsrael10-8-4

WHO BELIEVES THE LIE THAT ANYONE CAN BECOME PRESIDENT OF THE U.S.A.?

The Illuminati rule America! Who are the super rich "elite" Illuminati and their associates? The Queen of England, her husband Prince Philip and the Royal House of Windsor, the hierarchy on the board of directors of the Vatican, including the Pope; the Rothschilds, Rockefellers, Morgans, Duponts, Fords, Carnegies, Melons, Bush's etc. To get the details of who the Illuminati are, put Illuminati in www.google.com

It is not the American people who choose the President and Vice President of the United States of America, but rather the super secret "shadow government" called the Illuminati/New World Order who choose them!

Various researchers, including,David Icke in his book "The Biggest Secret", point out that all 43 men who were Presidents of the U.S.A. are related, and that 33 of the Presidents can be traced back to the bloodline of Charlemagne, who in the year 800 was crowned by Pope Leo III to be Holy Roman Emperor, the first head of an empire that would last over 1000 years! This should be setting off major alarm bells in your mind. Like this is no coincidence. The odds of all 43 Presidents being related, and this just randomly happening, are billions to one. Democratic and Republican candidates are "chosen" by the "Elitist" super rich organization called the Illuminati. Democrats and Republicans and the Illuminati would not want you to believe any of this. They don't teach you this in schools and for good reason: the Illuminati want to stay hidden. They do not want the masses to know that their small secret organization even exists so they can covertly continue their
 rule.

This farce called an "election" shows that America is a one party state. Both Democrats and Republicans work for the agenda of the Illuminati. They create a charade that looks like each party is different, but in the end the Democrats and Republicans vote for anything the Illuminati want in order to push forward the Illuminati agenda for "total world domination". This is why actors make such good politicians because this whole covert political charade at this time is an "act" being played out to control all the people in a so-called democracy. If you'd like to know who is going to win the U.S.Presidential election, just call up super wealthy David Rockefeller and he can tell you today because it's all a "staged event". This may be challenging for most people to believe, but it's true and if given the chance and enough money to fund a proper investigation, this can be proven. There is no "true" democracy in America, only an illusion that looks like a supposed
democracy. Currently democracy is imprisonment disguised as freedom.

A true democracy is not a two party system. It is many parties with different ideas that represent the will of the People, not the will of a few very rich individuals and the corporations that they own. Why weren't members from other political parties, who have candidates running for the Presidency, allowed to participate in the Presidential debates? Because the Presidential debates are a "staged Illuminati event" that's why. They would not allow any other competing candidates to participate, just like they don't allow any of the Illuminati controlled mass corporate media to cover and interview the other smaller party candidates. By suppressing any competing candidates outside of the Illuminati controlled Democratic and Republican parties, the Illuminati eliminate the possibility that someone might actually tell the American people the

Criminal Probe of Riggs Bank Underway
By: Kathleen Day
Washington PostThe Justice Department has launched a criminal investigation into possible wrongdoing at Riggs Bank, which has already paid a $25 million civil penalty for its failures to abide by laws designed to prevent money laundering.
The investigation was detailed in a letter earlier this month from the U.S. attorney for the District to federal bank regulators, asking them to put on hold their own investigation into the bank and its directors and senior management "to avoid any potential adverse impact" on the Justice Department probe. A copy of the letter was obtained by The Washington Post.
The U.S. attorney's office is examining the role of current and former executives and directors of Riggs Bank and its parent company, sources familiar with the probe confirmed yesterday.
The goal is to determine which people, if any, should be held accountable for the bank company's years-long failure to comply with federal laws designed to deter money laundering and other questionable activities that have surfaced in ongoing Senate and federal probes, said sources who spoke only on the condition that they not be identified because the investigation is continuing.
Among the people whose actions at the bank are under review are the company's largest shareholder, Joe L. Allbritton, 79, and his wife, Barbara, and son Robert, who is chairman of the bank and holding company, according to the sources.
Joe L. Allbritton bought the bank company in 1981 and ran it for two decades before handing control to his son three years ago. But he remained on the board of the holding company, and his wife remained on the board of the bank, until the end of May, when they resigned under pressure from bank regulators.
The Allbritton family said through a spokesman, "We've received no notice from any agency of a criminal investigation. We're confident we've done nothing wrong."
U.S. Attorney for the District Kenneth L. Wainstein asked federal bank regulators at the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC) -- the division of the U.S. Treasury that regulates banks -- to suspend its probe of the role current and former "directors and senior management of the bank and its holding company may have played in soliciting certain accounts, authorizing transactions in them, and overseeing compliance with law, regulation and safe and sound banking practices; and the personal use of bank assets by certain individuals." According to sources, a similar letter was sent to the Federal Reserve Board.
Wainstein said the OCC investigations would likely overlap with the probe his office is conducting in conjunction with the Justice Department's divisions that handle cases involving money laundering and fraud.
He said the Justice Department probe is looking into "a variety of matters relating to Riggs Bank, including the adequacy of Riggs Bank's anti-money-laundering compliance program," as well as potential conflict of interest violations by R. Ashley Lee, who was Riggs's chief federal examiner until taking a job as vice president of the bank two years ago. Lee has been placed on paid leave pending the outcome of the investigation.
Bank regulators and enforcement officials fined Riggs earlier this year for failure to have controls in place to ensure customers' money did not come from or fund illicit activities. Of particular interest were accounts connected to former Chilean dictator Augusto Pinochet, to the dictator of Equatorial Guinea and his family, and to

Republicans Vote to Break Up "Liberal" 9th Circuit Court
By: Mark Sherman
Associated PressWASHINGTON (AP) - The Republican-led House voted Tuesday to break up the San Francisco-based 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, an action opponents said was motivated by conservatives' ire over some of the court's ["liberal"] rulings.
Nine states are currently covered by the 9th Circuit, but the legislation would leave just California and Hawaii in a revamped lineup.
The proposal splits the seven other states into two new courts: one to handle appeals from Arizona, Idaho, Montana and Nevada; and the other to oversee Alaska, Oregon and Washington.
Supporters said the new lineup reflects the need to address the region's bulging caseload and rapid population growth. They denied the vote was an _expression_ of displeasure with court rulings, including the 2002 opinion that declared the Pledge of Allegiance unconstitutional when recited in public schools.
``The need to split the 9th Circuit is undeniable. It has grown so rapidly that we will have to split this court,'' said Rep. Mike Simpson, R-Idaho.
However, the measure, which passed by a vote of 205-194, was not expected to become law because of strong opposition in the Senate. It is part of a larger bill that passed by voice vote and would create 58 new judgeships across the nation.
Opponents said the legislation's certain death in the Senate was evidence that Republicans were more interested, in the words of Rep. Howard Berman, D-Calif., in providing ``campaign-season cannon fodder'' to their political base than passing a bill that would relieve overburdened federal courts.
Rep. Rick Renzi, R-Ariz., described 9th Circuit judges as activists who are ``legislating from the bench.''
California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, a Republican, and a majority of 9th Circuit judges say the split is unnecessary.
Most of the 21 California Republicans in the House initially opposed the measure, and their votes would have insured its defeat. But at least 10 Californians changed their votes to ``yes'' after huddling on the House floor, while five Republicans maintained their opposition.
``We don't want to create a hyper-liberal court in California'' by putting the court's more conservative judges in the two new circuits, said Rep. Dana Rohrabacher, R-Calif., among the vote-switchers.
Lawmakers were reassured that the new 9th Circuit would be given seven new judgeships to dilute what they see as its liberal leanings, Rohrabacher said.

Blackwater Recruits Pinochet Death Squad Members for Iraq Merc Duty :.

Man, this just gets better by the minute. You know what this sounds like?!
It's VERY similar to the way the CIA used to run its covert training
operations. Private planes, shooting ranges in remote areas, hiring unsavory
maniacs from all corners of the globe, operations that nobody hears about
unless someone fucks up. Sound familiar? But now it's like they don't need
to cover it up. They have a website! They sell t-shirts and bumper stickers.
The spook contractors have come out of the closet, they're proud, they're
kickin' ass and they're busier than ever. Shit, it might be time to form a
mercenary labor union! Where's Hasenfus!?
If Fletcher Prouty was still alive, he'd probably die laughing! The Secret
Team isn't so secret anymore.
Very good article:
In February, Blackwater USA, a North Carolina-based Pentagon contractor,
began recruiting former commandos, other soldiers and seamen from Chile,
offering them up to $4,000 a month to guard oil wells against attack by
insurgents, the Guardian reported. The company flew a first group of about
60 former commandos, many of who had trained under the military government
of Augusto Pinochet, from Santiago to a... [large] training camp in North
Carolina, wrote Jonathan Franklin, reporting from Santiago, Chile.
These recruits will eventually wind up in Iraq, where they will spend six
months to a year: We scour the ends of the earth to find professionals --
the Chilean commandos are very, very professional and they fit within the
Blackwater system, Gary Jackson, the president of Blackwater USA, told the
Guardian.

Besides the US, servers in UK, Germany, Italy, Brazil

Larry Franklin's October Surprise This trick is no treat for either candidate

by Justin Raimondo

Amid the back-and-forth between the Bushies and the Kerry camp, one campaign season fusillade has gone largely unnoticed. Fundie nut-job Pat Robertson exposed the real heart and soul of his movement of moonbats the other day at a news conference in Jerusalem, where he threatened to withdraw his support from the GOP:
"'The President has backed away from [the road map], but if he were to touch Jerusalem, he'd lose all Evangelical support. Evangelicals would form a third party' because, though people 'don't know about' Gaza, Jerusalem is an entirely different matter."
It is an extraordinary sight: not since the leaders of the American Communist Party traveled to Moscow to pledge allegiance to the Comintern in the earlier half of the last century has such an open display of fealty to a foreign power been recorded. Together with 5,000 of his followers, the Rev. Robertson – whose 1988 presidential campaign galvanized "born again" Christians into a potent force within the GOP – toured the Holy Land, much as John Reed and his comrades toured Soviet Russia, painting a portrait of the regime in roseate pastels and calling on their countrymen to support the "workers' fatherland." And the similarities do not end there. Reed, like Robertson, was inspired by a theology, a faith in the inexorable forces of History. The fundies call this Prophecy.
Commies and fundies have a lot more in common than either are capable of imagining, but one common thread stands out in particular. The dispensationalist dogma that gives Israel a key role in bringing about the Second Coming is roughly analogous to Russia's stature in the minds of the post-1917 Left as the vanguard and harbinger of world revolution. The American adherents of both creeds basically transferred their primary loyalties to a foreign country. Just as the Communists functioned as Soviet Russia's fifth column in America, so Robertson's flock serves in a similar capacity on behalf of the Israeli government. And they do so openly, and proudly.
From the "Red Decade" of the 1930s up until the beginning of the cold war, the left was hardly ever called on their passionate attachment to a foreign regime, except by scattered groups of isolated anti-Communists. During World War II, at the height of the Roosevelt-Stalin alliance, all criticism of the Soviet Union was reviled as "reactionary" and even treasonous. It wasn't until the U.S. began to square off against their former allies that the crackdown began and the government moved to expose and break up the extensive espionage apparatus the Kremlin had been allowed to build up in this country. As we later learned, Russia's cheering section in America was the linchpin of this spy network.
In tracking the progress of Soviet espionage activities in the U.S., investigators – and not only Senator Joseph McCarthy – found that Soviet "front" organizations, such as the Institute for Pacific Relations (IPR), were key links in the Kremlin's spy apparatus, of which top U.S. government officials, such as Laughlin Currie, Owen Lattimore, and Alger Hiss were a part. Hiding behind the public face of numerous respectable front groups, a covert coven of pro-Soviet spies and fellow travelers inside the U.S. government stole our secrets and betrayed their country, not for money, but for ideology.
Every fifth column movement has an underground component, charged with passing information to its foreign masters, as well as aboveground institutions: thinktanks, media outlets, and most of all lobbying groups that openly protect the interests of the Mother Country. For reasons of security, the two wings keep their distance from each other, but there is always a certain amount of clandestine interaction – a vulnerability that exposes them to constant danger.
This same vulnerability seems to have tripped up Israel's fifth column, of which Robertson and his cohorts are the loudest (and largest) public adjunct. That the usually pro-Bush Robertson is fired up enough to threaten the President of the United States with dire political retribution if he dares violate the preacher's obscure theological fixation with Jerusalem is surely some kind of sign, if not from God, then from a more earthly power. Could the fierce tone of Robertson's fatwa have something to do with the recent ratcheting up of the case against Larry Franklin, a Pentagon analyst accused of passing classified documents to Israel?
Franklin was previously reported as having been "turned" by the FBI, giving them information in exchange for the promise of leniency when it comes time to file charges, but that now appears to have changed. According to the Los Angeles Times, Franklin has rejected a proposed deal in which he would plead guilty to some of the charges, dismissed his court-appointed lawyer, and is now represented by Plato Cacheris, who

[CTRL] The Source Duelfer Didn't Quote

http://www.guardian.co.uk/Iraq/Story/0,2763,1323471,00.html

The source Duelfer didn't quote The head of the Iraq Survey Group knows regime change was the aim Scott RitterSaturday October 9, 2004The Guardian During this week of American election debates, Charles Duelfer, the former deputy executive chairman of the UN weapons inspectors and current head of the CIA's Iraq Survey Group, delivered to Congress his much-anticipated report on Iraq's WMD capabilities. Among his controversial conclusions is that, contrary to pre-war assertions by both the George Bush administration and Tony Blair's government, Iraq had neither stockpiles of WMD nor dedicated programmes for the manufacture of WMD. Duelfer's report did note that Iraq maintained so-called "dual-use" facilities (those with legitimate civilian and/or military functions, but which could be configured for proscribed use), but his ISG has found no evidence that any such conversion had taken place.
One would expect the ISG's conclusions to take the wind out of the sails of those who repeat the mantra that Iraq was a grave and growing threat. But Duelfer has provided a convenient escape from such criticism, by concluding that Saddam Hussein in fact fully intended to convert his "dual use" factories into WMD production facilities once UN weapons inspectors left. In one fell swoop, Duelfer has provided the ideal cover for the justification of the war.
Scott McClellan, the White House spokesman, was quick to note that Saddam was, according to the ISG report, "a gathering threat that needed to be taken seriously, that it was a matter of time before he was going to begin pursuing those weapons of mass destruction". The UK foreign secretary, Jack Straw, commenting on the report from Baghdad, was likewise quick to jump on the notion of intent. "Where this report breaks new ground," Straw said, "is by producing extensive new evidence showing that Saddam did indeed pose a threat to the international community ... The world is a safer place without him."
There are, however, several problems with this finding - first and foremost the notion of legality, especially in light of UN secretary general Kofi Annan's comments that the US-led invasion of Iraq represented a violation of the UN charter and international law. Bush and Blair have argued that because the Iraqi government had failed to comply with previous security council resolutions regarding Iraq's obligation to disarm, the right of enforcing these resolutions is implicit.
Duelfer's report slams the door on that line of thinking, since it is now clear that Iraq had in fact disarmed in compliance with security council resolutions. One of the tragic ironies of the decision to invade Iraq is that the Iraqi WMD declaration required by security council resolution 1441, submitted by Iraq in December 2002, and summarily rejected by Bush and Blair as repackaged falsehoods, now stands as the most accurate compilation of data yet assembled regarding Iraq's WMD programmes (more so than even Duelfer's ISG report, which contains much unsubstantiated speculation). Saddam Hussein has yet to be contradicted on a single point of substantive fact. Iraq had disarmed; no one wanted to accept that conclusion.
Charles Duelfer has to date provided no documentation to back up his assertion regarding Saddam's "intent". Nor has he produced any confession from Saddam Hussein or any senior Iraqi official regarding the same. What has been offered is a compilation of hearsay and conjecture linked to unnamed sources whose identities remain shrouded in secrecy.
There is one source I am certain will not be quoted in Duelfer's report - a former officer in Saddam Hussein's intelligence service, who was interviewed by the ISG repeatedly in the summer of 2003. Given the ongoing violence in Iraq today, this officer, who is well known to me, has asked that his name not be published. From 1992 until 2003, he headed a branch of Iraqi intelligence responsible for monitoring the work of the UN weapons inspectors. His office intercepted their communications, and recruited spies among their ranks in Baghdad, Bahrain, New York and elsewhere.
The mission of this intelligence unit was to discern the true intent of the UN weapons inspectors. Conventional thinking would hold that this was being done so that Iraq might better hide its WMD stockpiles. The Iraqi officer has long denied this, stating that instead his job was to find out why the UN refused to accept the Iraqi version of events, and to determine if the UN weapons inspectors were operating inside Iraq for purposes other than the disarmament.
This officer claims to have intercepted conversations between Charles Duelfer, during the time he served as deputy executive chairman of the UN inspection teams, and senior US government officials, in New York and Baghdad, where a US agenda (supported by the British) for removing Saddam Hussein was discussed. I can confirm that such

Democrats' Forked Tongue on National Security, Health
Care
by Jim Boulet, Jr.Posted Oct 8, 2004The Kerry-Edwards campaign hopes
Americans believe that their administration would mean peace and prosperity.
Anyone who knows their real record on Clinton Executive Order 13166, which
declared that all recipients of federal funds must provide translation services
into any language anyone speaks at any time, knows better.E.O. 13166 Compromises America's National
SecurityThe number of interpreters of languages critical to our
national security is finite. According to Kirk Belnap, a professor of Arabic at
Brigham Young University, no more than 200 non-Arab Americans in the entire
country had a professional-level proficiency in Arabic in 2001. That shortage
has not lessened. According to The
9/11 Commission Report, "The total number of undergraduate degrees
granted in Arabic in all U.S. colleges and universities in 2002 was
six."Sandy Berger, former National Security Advisor to Bill Clinton and
then-advisor to John Kerry, was caught smuggling documents out of the National
Archives [see "Will Justice Indict
Berger?"]. Among those reportedly stolen documents, as the New York
Post revealed on July 29, lay proof that the Clinton Administration
knew about the Arabic translator shortage prior to deciding to make it even
worse via E.O. 13166:
"Urgent complaints that the FBI could not decipher bugged
conversations between members of a Brooklyn mosque and Afghan terrorists
because it lacked translators were included in the documents former National
Security Adviser Sandy Berger removed from the National
Archives."While the FBI was begging for translators, the Clinton
Administration chose to take care of its pals, the trial lawyers, instead. This
fact, Berger may have recognized, would further undermine public confidence in
the Democratic Party's ability to put America's national interest ahead of its
own self-interest. Bush Administration
Reluctant on E.O. 13166; Kerry-Edwards EnthusiasticBush
Administration appointee, Assistant Atty. Gen. Alex Acosta, has continued
Clinton's language policy. Raul Yzaguirre, president of the National Council of
La Raza has said that Acosta "played a pivotal role" in the continued
enforcement of E.O. 13166. In addition, numerous Clinton holdovers who
have burrowed in as career employees of the Department of Health and Human
Services Office of Civil Rights (HHS OCR), are now deciding how E.O. 13166
should be enforced. The result: the Tucson Unified School District, where
at least 40 languages are spoken, signed a 2002 consent decree with HHS OCR
agreeing to provide translations and interpreters upon demand.Their
Senate records show that a Kerry-Edwards Administration would be far more
aggressive in its enforcement of E.O. 13166. Both Senators Kerry and Edwards
have cosponsored Sen. Tom Daschle's (D.-S.D.) "Health Care Coverage for
Minorities" legislation (S 1833), which would codify E.O. 13166 as a permanent
part of federal law. E.O. 13166 and Medical
MalpracticeThere remains a pot of gold for trial lawyers as a
result of E.O. 13166: increased malpractice litigation due to translation errors
both real and imagined. E.O. 13166 regulations propounded by HHS OCR
insist that friends or family members should not be used as translators.
Granted, a 2003 study published in Pediatrics Magazine found that
family members made at least one translation error roughly 77% of the time in a
medical setting. But according to that same study, trained, professional
interpreters still made at least one mistake 53% of the time. Poor
people seldom sue their equally impoverished relatives for translation mistakes.
Suing an employee of a wealthy hospital is quite another matter. What
might these lawsuits cost? Consider that a plaintiff in a 1984 case was awarded
$71 million when paramedics misinterpreted just one word
"intoxicado."Ethnic Activists' Double
StandardEfforts to require hospitals to determine whether patents
are legally here have been attacked as interfering with urgently needed medical
treatment. Yet a doctor or nurse is expected by E.O. 13166 to determine the
precise language and dialect spoken by every patient who is carried through
their door.E.O. 13166 also ensures that there will be lawsuits when a
hospital sends a speaker of Mandarin Chinese to translate for a speaker of
Cantonese Chinese, or a speaker of Castilian Spanish is asked to interpret for a
speaker of Puerto Rican Spanish.Americans pay millions of dollars to
provide health care and medical treatment for illegal aliens. According to a
recent article in the Washington Post, the U.S. government will help
subsidize "a four-year, $1 billion program to pay some of the costs of treating
illegal
