Gibson to Delete a Scene in 'Passion'

Mr. Foxman also protested Mr. Gibson's remark on the Holocaust. At the very
least it was ignorant, at the very most its insensitive. And you know what? He
doesn't get that either. He doesn't begin to understand the difference between
dying in a famine and people being cremated solely for what they are.

LOS ANGELES, Feb. 3 - Mel Gibson, responding to focus groups as much as to
protests by Jewish critics, has decided to delete a controversial scene about
Jews from his film, The Passion of the Christ, a close associate said today.

A scene in the film, in which the Jewish high priest Caiaphas calls down a kind
of curse on the Jewish people by declaring of the Crucifixion, His blood be on
us and on our children, will not be in the movie's final version, said the
Gibson associate, who spoke on condition of anonymity.

The passage had been included in some versions of the film that were shown
before select groups, mostly of priests and ministers.

It didn't work in the focus screenings, the associate said. Maybe it was
thought to be too hurtful, or taken not in the way it was intended. It has been
used terribly over the years.

Jewish leaders had warned that the passage from Matthew 27:25 was the historic
source for many of the charges of deicide and Jews' collective guilt in the
death of Jesus.

Mr. Gibson's decision to remove the scene could indicate that he was being
responsive to concerns of Jewish groups that the film will fuel anti-Semitism.
Mr. Gibson was the co-writer, director, producer and financier of the $25
million film, which will be released in more than 2,000 theaters on Feb. 25, Ash
Wednesday.

Mr. Gibson also responded to a letter from Abraham Foxman, national director of
the Anti-Defamation League, who had requested a meeting and asked Mr. Gibson to
consider a postscript that would implore your viewers to not let the movie turn
some toward a passion of hatred.

Mr. Gibson did not respond to those requests directly, writing only: I hope and
I pray that you will join me in setting an example for all of our brethren; that
the truest path to follow, the only path, is that of respect and, most
importantly, that of love for each other despite our differences.

Mr. Foxman responded in turn on Monday that your words do not mitigate our
concerns about the potential consequences of your film - to fuel and legitimize
anti-Semitism.

This reporter was shown a two-hour version of the R-rated movie this week. The
film features agonizing passages as Jesus, played by Jim Caviezel, is
mercilessly beaten by Jewish and then Roman guards, and jeered and hounded by a
Jewish mob on his way to his Crucifixion. It is unclear how close this version
is to Mr. Gibson's final film.

In this version, the Roman leader Pontius Pilate is depicted as being reluctant
to harm Jesus, who Pilate's wife warns is holy. Largely to mollify a restive
Jewish mob outside his window, Pilate agrees to a severe lashing and scourging
of Jesus, but the crowd and the high priest demand more.

Pilate says in Latin: Ecce homo - Behold the man - displaying the broken and
bleeding Jesus to the crowd. But the high priest insists, in Aramaic, Crucify
him. Pilate responds, Isn't this enough? The mob roars, No, and only then
does the Roman leader agree to the Crucifixion.

Because passion plays historically preceded outbreaks of anti-Semitic violence
in Europe, the film passage is a particularly sensitive matter with Jewish
groups at a time when anti-Semitism is on the rise in parts of Europe, the
Middle East and Asia.

But Mr. Gibson further raised hackles among Jewish leaders in an exclusive
interview by the writer Peggy Noonan published in the March issue of Reader's
Digest.

Rabbi Marvin Hier, director of the Simon Wiesenthal Center in Los Angeles,
accused Mr. Gibson of insensitivity when he compared Jewish suffering in the
Holocaust to that of millions of others who died in the war.

Ms. Noonan, a former speechwriter for President Ronald Reagan, asked Mr. Gibson
about his father, a conservative Catholic who was quoted in a New York Times
Magazine article last March as denying that Holocaust took place. Mr. Gibson
answered that he loved his father. Ms. Noonan insisted: You're going to have to
go on record. The Holocaust happened, right?

Mr. Gibson responded: I have friends and parents of friends who have numbers on
their arms. The guy who taught me Spanish was a Holocaust survivor. He worked in
a concentration camp in France. Yes of course. Atrocities happened. War is
horrible. The Second World War killed tens of millions of people. Some of them
were Jews in concentration camps. Many people lost their lives. In the Ukraine
several million starved to death between 1932 and 1933. During the last century
20 million people died in the Soviet Union.

Mr. Foxman also protested Mr. Gibson's remark on the Holocaust. At the very

  "It has become a common refrain among the anti-Semites 
  that the Talmud is the 'smoking gun' that confirms their 
  belief about Jews being stingy, malevolent and intent on world 
  domination," said Abraham H. Foxman, ADL National Director. 
  "They create this myth about Jewish practices and tradition, 
  which helps to further justify and promote their 
  anti-Semitism." ADL's report, The Talmud in 
  Anti-Semitic Polemics, exposes how certain passages from 
  the Talmud and other traditional Jewish texts are used to 
  foment anti-Semitism through distortions and fabrications. The 
  authors of anti-Talmudic polemics seek to paint Judaism as an 
  immoral religion that preaches hatred for non-Jews and 
  promotes obscenity, criminality, sexual perversion and other 
  immoral acts. Widely available on the Internet, such 
  anti-Talmudic tracts "are clearly designed to provoke 
  hostility toward Jews," Mr. Foxman said. The foremost 
  distorters of Talmudic texts include David Duke, the former 
  Klansman and white supremacist, and Michael A. Hoffman II, a 
  conspiracy theorist and Holocaust denier. Among the 
  claims refuted by the ADL report are: 
  
The claim that Judaism views non-Jews as 
"non-human;" 
The claim that Judaism encourages child 
molestation; 
The claim that Jews should not be trusted 
because they recite the Kol Nidre prayer that authorizes 
them to lie to non-Jews; 
The claim that Judaism demands that 
non-Jews who study Jewish law be put to death; 
The claim that the Talmud employs the name

ADL Concerned Mel Gibson's 'Passion' Will Fuel Anti-Semitism if Released in Present Form 

New York, NY, August 11, 2003  After having attended a private screening of Mel Gibson's new film, "The Passion," the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) today voiced concerns that the film, if released in its present form, "will fuel hatred, bigotry and anti-Semitism" by reinforcing the notion of collective Jewish guilt for the death of Jesus.An ADL representative was present at a private screening of "The Passion" at the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston, Texas.

"The film unambiguously portrays Jewish authorities and the Jewish mob as the ones responsible for the decision to crucify Jesus," said Abraham H. Foxman, ADL National Director. "We are deeply concerned that the film, if released in its present form, will fuel the hatred, bigotry and anti-Semitism that many responsible churches have worked hard to repudiate."

The version of Gibson's film, as previewed by Rabbi Eugene Korn, ADL Director of Interfaith Affairs, contained a number of troubling themes and images, all raising the specter of "deicide," or Jewish complicity in the death of Jesus.

"Sadly, the film contains many of the dangerous teachings that Christians and Jews have worked for so many years to counter," said Rabbi Korn. "This is not a disagreement between the Jews and Mr. Gibson. Many theologically informed Catholics and Protestants have expressed the same concerns regarding anti-Semitism, and that this film may undermine Christian-Jewish dialogue and could turn back the clock on decades of positive progress in interfaith relations."

"We hope that Mr. Gibson and Icon Productions will consider modifying 'The Passion,' so that the film will be one that is historically accurate, theologically sound and free of any anti-Semitic message," said Mr. Foxman.

ADL's concerns include:

- The film portrays Jewish authorities and the Jewish "mob" as forcing the decision to torture and execute Jesus, thus assuming responsibility for the crucifixion. 

- The film relies on sinister medieval stereotypes, portraying Jews as blood-thirsty, sadistic and money-hungry enemies of God who lack compassion and humanity. 

- The film relies on historical errors, chief among them its depiction of the Jewish high priest controlling Pontius Pilate 

- The film uses an anti-Jewish account of a 19th century mystical anti-Semitic nun, distorts New Testament interpretation by selectively citing passages to weave a narrative that oversimplifies history, and is hostile to Jews and Judaism. 

- The film portrays Jews who adhere to their Jewish faith as enemies of God and the locus of evil.

Leftist watchdogs posing as experts on extremism are advising police
agencies in preemptive law enforcement. The resulting dragnet will
increasingly target law-abiding gun owners, pro-lifers, homeschoolers,
and other foes of the total state.
A new state law that went into effect on October 1st permits law
enforcement authorities in Connecticut to confiscate guns from anyone
determined to be an immediate danger to himself or others. State
police Lieutenant Robert Kiehm explained to the Associated Press that
the purpose of the measure is to give police officers the power to take
some proactive steps instead of waiting for something to happen.
Although the circumstances under which such seizures can occur are
narrowly defined, the Connecticut law represents a significant advance
for the ominous emerging doctrine of pre-emptive law enforcement.
Lawmakers in other states say the focus on prevention is the law's
strength, reported AP. The thing that frustrates me is that when
they're pulling bodies out of a house, neighbors are telling the police,
'Yeah, the guy who shot them was nuts — we all knew that,' declared
Illinois State Representative Tom Dart (D), who plans to introduce a
similar proposal in his own state. But everyone says that there's
nothing that they could have done to stop the shooting. The value of
this law is not so much that police will seize your guns, explained
Connecticut State Representative Michael Lawlor, who sponsored the law.
It gives police a system to investigate a person who poses a threat. If
the police never confiscate a person's guns, they can at least look into
the person's behavior and perhaps prevent a tragedy by intervening. AP
paraphrased Lawlor as saying that the new law could stop people like
Benjamin Smith, the white supremacist who killed two people and wounded
nine during a two-state shooting spree targeting Jews, blacks and
Asians. Smith's criminal record and reputation for passing out hate
literature could have prompted police to take action, Lawlor said.
Lawlor's reference to the Benjamin Smith case demonstrates that there is
a political aspect to Connecticut's model of proactive gun
confiscation, since Smith's abhorrent political views would have played
a role in defining him as a threat to others. But would the same be true
of certain political views that are merely politically incorrect or
unpopular? How about political affiliations with real or perceived
extremist groups that are tirelessly linked in the media with
unambiguous hate groups?
In principle, the Connecticut law is of a piece with recent proposals to
give the FBI and other agencies enhanced power to keep political
extremists, almost always of the right-wing variety, under special
scrutiny. Those extremists considered particularly prone to violence
would be subject to interrogation as a means of deterring such
outbursts. And, in some cases, extremists would find themselves denied
constitutional protections such as those contained in the First and
Second Amendments.
In order to be effective, pre-emptive law enforcement measures would

NEW YORK -- Jewish groups have joined a campaign to boycott the selling
of a book that is believed to have inspired the Oklahoma City bombing.

The American Jewish Committee and the Simon Wiesenthal Center have
contacted major booksellers across the nation, asking them not to
distribute The Turner Diaries, a fictional work about gun control
written by neo-Nazi William Pierce.

The Southern Poverty Law Center, an organization headed by Morris Dees
that monitors and fights extremism, first raised concern about the
book's publication and distribution.

The novel has been in circulation since it was completed in 1978. At
that time, it was published by National Vanguard Books, an arm of the
National Alliance, a neo-Nazi group. More than 185,000 copies were sold.

But it was inaccessible to the general public until Barricade Books
decided to publish it. A spokeswoman for the publisher said the book was
in production last week.

Calling the book a bible of the extreme right wing, Kenneth Stern,
program specialist on anti-Semitism and extremism at the American Jewish
Committee, said it promotes a political agenda of making Hitler's dream
come true.
In a letter to booksellers, Stern wrote, The distribution of this book
will help finance one of the main organizations for promoting hatred and
violence against innocent Americans.
Pierce leads the National Alliance, a neo-Nazi group that also promotes
the book.

The Simon Wiesenthal Center also is urging leading U.S. bookstore chains
not to stock the racist tract, the organization said in a statement.

It is almost beyond belief that on the first anniversary of the
Oklahoma City massacre, a mainstream publisher would announce

facility by a truck carrying a bomb, a book which was found among

It is outrageous, hypocritical and cowardly for a journal like the Rocky
Mountain News, whose daily existence rests on the sanctity of the First
Amendment, to take cheap shots at those citizens who choose to exercise
their First Amendment rights in a different way. I am referring to the
attacks made against me and the Tyranny Response Team in the editorial of
May 31, Louts on the protest line.

I will not apologize for using our passion, our lungs and our bullhorns to
convey our message. Being a true grass-roots movement we do not have the
corporate sponsors or the money that the Million Mom March or SAFE Colorado
has, and consequently we cannot afford to run full-page ads in the News like
they do. We must stand in the streets and holler, because the media has
failed miserably in its responsibility to report all sides of the issue.

Despite the best efforts of News reporters such as Carla Crowder to
discredit us, a handful of people willing to stand up for the Bill of Rights
has drawn large numbers of people into our ranks, not just in Colorado, but
across the country. The numbers of Million Mom Marchers on the other hand,
have plummeted faster than the Mir space station. Their Mother's Day rally
that drew 3,500 people a year ago only attracted a pathetic 200 this year.

They were quick to blame the tactics of the TRT for their dismal turnout,
never once considering that it is our message that is at last being heeded.
Not content simply to point their fingers at us and scream, No fair!, they
had to rat us out to the high priests and police of political correctness,
the Anti-Defamation League. The ADL, like their cowardly and hypocritical
brethren in the Million Mom March, won't come right out and call us anti-
Semites or racists (a tall order considering that I am Jewish), but must
rely on their stock in trade of smear, innuendo and character assassination.

They claim to be concerned about the kind of people that might be drawn
into our ranks and the possible link between rogue members of the TRT that
might have made threats against Tom Mauser. And like their philosophical
comrades at the News, they too are concerned with our tactics.

This is a transparent and despicable attempt to demonize us without having
the guts to accuse us of anything concrete or engage us in a public debate.
And after all, what can they accuse us of? No member of the TRT has ever
been arrested at a demonstration, nor has any TRT member been questioned
about threatening anyone.

I have repeatedly asked the Million Mom March, SAFE Colorado and the ADL to
debate the issues with me in a public forum of their choosing. They have all
refused. As a consequence of their refusal they have left us no choice but
to use the theater of the street to make our points.

Despite the self-evident absurdity of their emotional rhetoric, their
arguments are historically, ethically, morally and constitutionally bankrupt
and they know it - hence their refusal to debate.

It is an inescapable irony that history repeats itself. Undoubtedly the
good, upstanding, respectable members of Boston society along with its
newspapers strictly condemned the tactics of a band of ruffians and
hooligans, some 200 years ago as they boarded a ship in Boston Harbor and
contemptuously broke the rules.

These louts dressed up in outrageous costumes and painted their faces in
wild colors as they trespassed on private property. This band of rowdies
stole merchandise and, in bold defiance of the king's law, dumped it into
the sea. This act of flagrant disregard for all civilized behavior was to
become known as the Boston Tea Party.

You might find our tactics distasteful. We find the destruction of liberty
even more distasteful. Get used to us. Unlike our cause du jour adversaries,
we have pledged our lives, our fortunes and our sacred honor to winning back
our freedoms.

League continues this Friday in a San Francisco courtroom with an
effort by the ADL to obtain a summary judgement in a class action suit
that has been in the courts since 1993.

   The next hearing for the case will take place on Friday June 15, 2001

Historical Review (IHR), taken over in 1994 by a profit-mad gang of
lawyers and parasites, may think of Greg Raven as merely a common gunsel
and thug. But this would be wrong. He's more-or less-as the case may be.
 It now turns out that Raven's denials that he is a paid agent of the
Church of Scientology may be true. In fact, it may be true that no real
Church of Scientology exists.

of lawyers, most of whom are not even Scientologists!  The record
shows that Scientology, its names, trademarks, copyrights, logos-even
including LRH, the initials of its founder-L. Ron Hubbard-are the
property of a separate corporation, Religious Technology Center, Inc.
(RTC).  And RTC is completely separate from Scientology. It receives
fees, commissions and payments every time that the sect's names appear
in any of the printed material it puts out.  RTC is hidden in a
corporate maze. It lists its official address in care of a little
professional mail drop at 419 Larchmont Avenue in Los Angeles called
Village Mail Call.

And yet this obscure corporation owns the multi-million dollar
Scientology empire! How many veteran followers of L. Ron Hubbard know
this?

The board of directors of RTC is composed of lawyers for the most part,
few if any of whom are Scientologists. One of these is Lawrence E.
Heller, a longtime Scientology lawyer.

 Significantly, Heller was also the lawyer for Mel Mermelstein, the
holocaust survivor who sued the IHR and Liberty Lobby for millions of
dollars in 1991.  In the courtroom, Mermelstein's performance was so
poor that the judge dismissed his suit before the trial. At this, Heller
lost his mind and physically attacked Liberty Lobby's attorney, Mark
Lane, who had (easily) made Mermelstein look like a fool.

It's really quite simple.  The ADL is in the business of "marginalizing
fringe groups", particularly so-called "anti-semitic" groups.

It uses this technique to build political "fences" around much larger
groups, such as Catholics, Baptists, Germans, etc, in order to
contain them and keep them on the reservation.

One of the objects of the ADL's attacks is "the Christian right", whose offense
in the ADL's eyes seems to be that they think of themselves as "Jews" to the
point of believing that Israel is their homeland.

The ADL's attacks serve as a warning to "mainstream" Christian denominations
that if they don't scrupulously behave within the bounds that the ADL
prescribes for them, the "mainstream" groups can be attacked, too.

Now THAT'S interesting AND it leads me to speculate on some other things.  I
have involved myself in several online discussion groups on various
religions including Judaism and Christianity [disclaimer: more of interest
than anything - I have also been on pagan lists].  One thing I continually
got flamed about is STRESSING the fact that Jesus [Yeheshua?] was a DEVOUT
Jew.  As such he would accurately acuse modern Christianity as heresy,
blasphemy, and methinks would not want any part in his own deification.
According to the very religion that he devoted himself to, it is tantamount
to hubris.  As a devout Judaic WORSHIPPER, how could he spiritually lead
ANYONE being so self-centered as to worship himself.  If one argues that he
did not worship himself [as many Christians do while not even realizing it]
but worshipped his father, then it would be ancestor worship and would put
him in the same boat as many pagans [we begin to see why ANY reasonable
scrutiny of doctrines threatens ANY orthodoxy].

So an intelligent follower of Jesus, IMHO, could not ascribe to anything but
some form of Judaism, potentially recognizing Jesus as a prophet [let's not
get into the hiearchy of prophets, i.e. Jesus was MORE prophetic than
Muhammad, etc.].

All of the afore mentioned would be a threat to orthodox Judaism, the
dominant brands of Christianity that deny their Judaic/Pagan merger history
[mediated by Emperor Constantine in the 4th century].  Not only that, but it
would be a threat to much of the foundation of what we call HIStory [who's
story?].  In fact, given that religious doctrines are perhaps the thing that
is most fiercely hammered into the heads of the masses, can one doubt that
some controling element deems such to be necessary to the maintenance of its
own position?

Such things would be a major threat to the cornerstone of society as we know
it - which is a complex maze of taught habits that make it easy for the few
to control the many.  If the most fiercely hammered doctrines society has
taught us are IGNORED by people, those people can be deemed capable of what
to the controllers would be a threat and to the pioneering  - merely
open-minded.  If such a group of people actually had the audacity to arm
themselves with the knowledge of the entire community in which they were
nestled and not, as a result, make the community feel in the least bit
threatened, controllers would say that they are getting away with too much.
A statement must be made to that community.  As well, a statement must be
made to ANY that would have the audacity to believe as they wish, assume the
prerogative of being able to defend themselves, and, worst of all, actually
get people to listen.  Obviously, the feds [or someone above the feds?] felt
that to be that un-orthodox AND to have the tolerance, and in some cases -
admiration, of a whole typically conservative community that the Davidians
had far too much charisma for their own good.

All it takes to tell such would-be seekers to knock it off would be to burn
a bunch of them alive.  Can you say WITCH HUNT?  Can you say BURN THEM AT
THE STAKE?

There are a whole slew of power brokering elements in the world that would
feel the need to stamp out such naughtiness.



  (The Davidians' property was purchased in early 1959 by
  Benjamin Roden, the founder of the Branch Davidians.  The
  Israeli property remained the property of the church when
  Koresh assumed leadership.)

  CAN and ADL proved their worth on Waco Holocaust day, but it
  'appears' they soon dissolved the Cult Awareness Network,
  out of fear they would all be implicated in a court of law.
  (Scientology's efforts may? also be partly responsible.)


  There was also the PROMIS software biz -- allegedly THE target
  of the entire Waco Assault.  Vince Foster was deeply involved
  in both the Waco Crisis and Systematics' PROMIS software.

Well, a serious conspiratorialist might argue that mad killer Jews
need no specific reason, they just do it out of general principles.
Or that ADL saw Koresh as a serious challenge, somehow.  Or that

exercise, conducted to train/desensitize the participants.  Or

 The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) of B'nai B'rith can take credit
 for the holocaust in Waco, Texas that resulted in the slaughter
 (immolation) of nearly one hundred men women and children.

 Herb Brin, a leading backer of the ADL and publisher of
 Heritage, a newspaper which serves the Jewish community in Los
 Angeles, has let the cat out of the bag.

 In a signed headline story which appeared in the Arpil 16
 edition of his newspaper, Brin inadvertently exposed the role
 that the ADL played in helping engineer the BATF/FBI/DELTA
 FORCE/BRITISH SAS slaughter at the Branch Davidian church in
 Waco.  In an article hailing the ADL's now-infamous, once-secret
 international spy network, Brin stated:

 "U.S. and Texas authorities have precise documentation
 (from ADL of course) on the Branch Davidian cult in Waco
 and how it operated in the past."


 Brin's amazing revelation (ostensibly designed to praise the
 ADL's activities) brings to light the truth about the propaganda
 and disinformation about the beleagured religious sect.

 In short, it was the ADL that essentially tricked the federal
 authorities into conducting the operation that resulted in the
 tragedy.

 What's more, the SPOTLIGHT has learned the so-called Cult
 Awareness Network (CAN) which also prodded the assault on the
 Branch Davidians is closely connected to the ADL.

 (Some sources, in fact, believe that CAN is, in fact, an
 ADL-funded front operation. There is no question, however,
 that CAN does operate as such.)

 In any case, the American public owes a great debt to Herb Brin,
 an admitted ADL informant himself.  Thanks to Brin the truth
 about the ADL's intervention [at the outset BEFORE the raid]] in
 the Branch Davidian affair is now part of the public record.

 A final note: in the same article where he bragged of the ADL's
 campaign against the religious sect, Brin noted that, as a
 consequence of the ADL's involvement in the San Francisco
 scandal, Liberty Lobby was in what he called its "finest hour."
 [ADL was caught in a massive spying scandal using SF POLICE
 files] [Liberty Lobby, parent of the SPOTLIGHT newspaper,
 exposed this scandal, as did all mainstream papers.]

 The ADL is certainly not in its finest hour, this especially
 since more than a few people have suggested that the very reason
 why David Koresh and the Branch Davidian sect were subjected to
 the fiery holocaust that brought the standoff in Waco to an end
 is because the ADL did not want the Branch Davidians to come out
 alive.

 Had Koresh and his followers gone to trial (which is very much
 apparently what they desired in order that they could tell their
 side of the story), the course of legal discovery would have
 revealed the way that the ADL had been prodding action by the
 FBI and the BATF.

 This would have exposed the ADL's criminal methods and its
 covert spy operations even further at a time when the outfit is
 already under fire.  Thus it was necessary that the Branch
 Davidians be exterminated.  A lucky few did survive which means
 that, ultimately, the truth may come out.

control our sources of news and other information, and enslave us

confidential government files; data that was also discovered in the
files of the ADL itself when police recently raided ADL headquarters
in San Francisco and Los Angeles.

We and other patriots have been telling you for many years that the
ADL was the greatest enemy of American's freedom and independence - a
far greater enemy than the KGB ever was.  Now, at long last, a few
brave and, as yet, lonely, journalists from the establishment media
have broken their decades-long silence on this dangerous group,

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Today, the Anti-Defamation League, champions in the fight against
anti-semitism, racism and bigotry in the effort too secure justice and
fair treatment for all people, have gone on record for the first time in
officially opposing the Georgia Driver's License Fingerprinting statute.

The ADL joins a growing list of diverse newspapers and organizations who
oppose fingerprinting for driver's licenses including the ACLU, SCLC,
Christian Coalition, Eagle Forum, Marietta Daily Journal, Augusta
Chronicle, Athens Daily News/Banner Herald, Cartersville Daily Tribune
News, Valdosta Daily Times, Tifton Gazette and others.

In a letter from Southeast Region Director, Jay Kaiman, the ADL urges
"Repeal of the Georgia Driver's License Fingerprinting statute and
urge[s] Governor Roy E. Barnes to see that this objective is achieved."

Fingerprinting was "sold" to the legislature under the context of
stopping fraud, but according to figures supplied by Public Safety,
there have been only 142 arrests in 2 ½ years as a result of an
individual fraudulently trying to get a driver's license.  In fact,
Driver License Examiners do not have the power to make an arrest.

Of all the states, Minnesota uses the most advanced fraud resistant
features (like Georgia it is a Polaroid system) and does not employ any
biometrics (e.g. fingerprint).  Interestingly, California does requires
a fingerprint, but has one of the highest fraud rates in the nation
(although practically negligible).

The Governor has the power by Executive Order to instruct Public Safety
to stop fingerprinting.
