The author begins by describing the 11th-century Iranian-based cult known as the Assassins, noting its obvious parallels with al-Qaeda. Next, he traces the history of the Freemasons and the Illuminati, observing that "[a]ny review of U.S. history encounters Freemasons lurking behind every treaty, battle and statute." He then proceeds to sketch the complex history of the French cabal the Priory of Sion; details the belief systems of the Druids and Gnostics and their differing attitudes to secrecy; and explores how followers of the Kabbalah, "neither a religion nor an organization," came to be considered "secretive and sinister" (Reynolds comments lightheartedly on how "the Kabbalah was transformed into a supermarket of pious accoutrements" by the Kabbalah Center in L.A.). Chapters on Triads, the Mafia and Yakuza are adept in their focus on immigration and minority cultural traditions in American society. Reynolds is most provocative when drawing links between Skull and Bones and the CIA. He closes with a brief history of conspiracy theory, anti-Semitism and the risks of paranoid allegations. [CTRL] Secret Societies, Bohemian Club, Bohemian Grove Herbert Hoover and San Francisco Secret Society Meetings - Shadow Government
http://www.mt.net/~watcher/bohemiangrove.html Title: Secret Societies, Bohemian Club, Bohemian Grove Herbert Hoover and San Francisco Secret Society Meetings - Shadow Government Bohemian Club Bohemian Grove Global Elite Movers, shakers from politics, business go Bohemian: Annual Sonoma fete draws Bushes , Kissinger , Powell , Gingrich By Suzanne Bohan Bee Correspondent (Published Aug. 2, 1999) MONTE RIO -- The Bohemian Club's Annual Summer Encampment came to a close here Sunday, ending a two-week retreat for the rich and powerful that President Herbert Hoover once called "the greatest men's party on Earth." The club's famed annual gathering has been held for more than 100 years at the 2,700-acre Bohemian Grove in Monte Rio, about 70 miles north of San Francisco in Sonoma County. This year's event drew in notables such as former President George Bush, Texas Gov. George W. Bush, Henry Kissinger, retired Gen. Colin Powell, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich and Dow Chemical Chairman Frank Popoff, as well as actor Danny Glover. The men gather to celebrate what they call "the spirit of Bohemia," said Peter Phillips, a Sonoma State University sociology professor who wrote his doctoral dissertation on the Bohemian Club. "This is a place men can go and hang out with people who are similar to them," he said. The annual gathering near the Russian River, which was first held in 1879, starts with the "Cremation of Care" ritual, in which the club's mascot is burned in effigy, symbolizing a freedom from care. Members also perform several plays, and gourmet food and expensive wine are plentiful. While the club was formed in 1872 by a group of San Francisco journalists, the male-only club now bars journalists from membership to protect the group's privacy. Membership is coveted, and people routinely wait 10 or 15 years before gaining admittance. There are currently about 2,700 members. The club has drawn criticism for years because of its emphasis on privacy. What particularly concerns Phillips and others are the "Lakeside Talks" held during the summer retreat. This year, Powell was expected to deliver a talk titled "America's Promise Leading Armies and Leading Kids," and Popoff, of Dow Chemical, was to give a speech called "Environmental Journey." "These are often public policy speeches," said Mary Moore, with Bohemian Grove Action Network, a protest group. "And the American public is not privy to it." No one from the club returned several calls from The Bee. Bohemian Grove Action Network has periodically held demonstrations at the grove, although none were held this year. The point of the protests, Moore said, has been "to let the American public know that what they've learned in civics isn't the full story on how decision-making . . . is made in this country." The Bohemian Club, she said, "is one of the most elite organizations on the planet." When the group sponsors public policy talks that are held without public scrutiny, "the average American feels left out of the process," she said. Phillips echoes Moore's objections to the off-the-record nature of the Lakeside Talks. "These are extremely powerful people and private discussions on policy issues that affect us certainly go against democratic principles," he said. "There's no reason that those speeches they're giving couldn't be transcribed and made public. They have a responsibility to be open about it." The most important events, however are the "lakeside talks" (past orators: Alexander Hague and Casper Weinberger). This year's speaker was Henry Kissinger on The Challenge of the '80s." Maclean's magazine, March 23, 1981 reported: "Each summer, for three weekends - this year's will be the 103rd - nearly 2,000 Bohemians, with guests in tow, speed in by car and corporate jet to their guarded Grove, close by the hamlet of Monte Rio (population 1,200) on the Russian River. -Caveat Lector- from: http://www.chronicle.duke.edu/story.php?articleID=19382 Click Here: A HREF="http://www.chronicle.duke.edu/story.php?articleID=19382" The Chronicle Online - Secret societies: Do the /A - Secret societies: Do they still haunt the campus? The mystery behind two societies is revealed after many decades of secrets and silenceBy Ellen Mielke University Archives Red Friars from the 1950s and todays mystery society initiate new members. Shhh... it's a secret. You've seen them appear randomly around campus, cloaked in black robes and moving in a seemingly organized pattern, shouting mysterious words and gesturing with their arms. But it is not Halloween they are celebrating. They are the remnants of a culture that used to be prevalent at Duke-secret societies. By far, the grandest era of secret societies at Duke came during the '40s and '50s, when two organizations gained an influential role in campus life. The Order of the Red Friars sprung up in 1913 at Trinity College with the mission of creating a spirit of loyalty and interest in the school. Senior members selected seven new junior initiates during public ceremonies in front of the Chapel. "There was a tradition of a lot of this type of stuff on college campuses," said University Archivist Bill King. "Duke's were really only quasi-secret. People knew who they were." These initiations, or "tappings"-so called because new members were tapped on the back to signify that they had been chosen-usually took place in late spring. One shrouded member would stand in front of the Chapel early in the morning to signify that the tappings would be that day, King said. Soon, students would gather to see who the new members would be. Typically, secret society members were campus leaders, and of no surprise to the rest of the student body. "One of the functions of a university is to foster leadership, and these secret societies were a way of recognizing leaders," said Tom Harkins, associate University archivist. Members of the society included such campus legends as George Allen, William Few, Thomas Southgate, William Wannamaker and Hollis Edens, among numerous others whose names still figure on Duke's campus. The tapping ceremony each year ended the society's public role, however. All activities were kept secret, and many students wondered if the group was active at all. It was not until this decade that an agreement with the Univ ersity to seal the records ended, and the role of the group was revealed. Jenny Robinson/The Chronicle Red Friars from the 1950s and todays mystery society initiate new members. According to minutes from the group's meetings, members of the Red Friars were affiliated with various student organizations, including student government, The Chronicle and the Undergraduate Judicial Board, where they could further the society's aims. During its existence, the group helped create University policies and was, according to the archives, "privy to information not widely known on campus." Harkins said that one of the most mysterious efforts of the group was the creation of the pecularily-placed plaque in front of the Chapel that states the aims of Duke University. Until the society's minutes were unsealed, no one knew who had funded the plaque. One of the more influential steps taken by the group was the founding, in 1925, of the Order of the White Duchy, a female counterpart to their organization. Initially, the Red Friars selected the seven members of the Duchy, but connections between the societies ended after that. The Duchy no longer exists today, but at the time it too helped create University policies and secretly influenced student life. Members were usually student leaders, and past ones include such famous names as Mary Biddle Semans and Elizabeth Dole. The tappings of the White Duchy were also public, and were characteristically performed by senior members wearing white robes. The only other public notice of the group was that members wore white carnations once a month. Harkins said that according to legend, Dole received six white carnations upon being named Secretary of Transportation in 1983. But what happened to the popularity of such groups at Duke? According to archives at Yale University, for example, there are still eight secret societies at Yale, including the infamous Skull and Bones, founded in 1832. "I guess we all like rituals and secrets. To some extent these societies provide opportunities for exclusiveness... but in this day of inclusiveness, I think these societies have found that they don't have a very prominent place," said Sue Wasiolek, assistant dean for student affairs. When the Red Friars disbanded in 1971, the members, as well as alumni, made the collective decision to end the group because it seemed too elitist and student interest had waned. King added that towards the end of both the Duchy's and the Red Friars' existence, they were mocked on campus by groups including The

Four of the best-known societies -- Book and Snake, Scroll and Key, Wolf's Head, and Skull and Bones -- spent over $80,000 a year on their programs, including $270,938 from Scroll and Key. Part of these expenses, however, is incurred through maintaining the societies' huge tombs, which are valued at more than $400,000 each, according to filings. These figures, obtained from recent filings of the federal 990 forms -- required for non-profit groups such as the societies -- show some of their financial details while retaining the secrecy of their activities. Scroll and Key's 1998 tax filings were among the most detailed, showing that the society spends over $16,000 arranging "conferences, conventions, and meetings," according to the form. It also gave specific prizes to members, which ranged from $50 to $2,500, although it is unclear whether this is the only money members of the society will receive. Although the tax forms do not reveal this information, Skull and Bones reportedly gives each new member $15,000. The highest portion of the money spent by Scroll and Key -- $20,440 -- goes toward investment fees, but a close $17,119 is spent on the group's undergraduate meetings at the tomb on 484 College Street. The tomb was valued at just over $500,000 at the time of the filing and could be worth more with the society's completed renovations. Scroll and Key also reported the highest value of assets on May 31, 1999 -- at over $5 million -- with Skull and Bones registering over $4 million in assets. While the tax filings showed the many financial dealings of the societies, the actual activities remained largely secret. All four defined their purposes very vaguely, ranging in detail from Skull and Bones' "educational programs" to Book and Snake, which "provides a forum for the exercise of the student's intelligence and the formation of their character in the presence of contemporary students -- as well as outside speakers having many diverse backgrounds and interests." Wolf's Head and Scroll and Key's descriptions of their societies both described the financial assistance they offer members and graduates. Book and Snake, located on 145 High Street and formed in 1863, also included some information about the society's founding in its filings. The by-laws of the society, created in 1961, include a number of stipulations about how the society should prove "the intellectual and moral improvement of its members" including calling for the preparation and delivery of speeches or papers by the members on the bi-weekly sessions, which would be followed by questions and analysis by the members. Looking back I'm glad I found this book first, before I went on some wild goose chase following unsubstantied rumors and sinister allegations. The author is obviously very learned in this area and while I haven't read them I would also suggest his other books that have to do with religions and occult societies as well. The author doesn't indulge in some of the more preposterous accusations against the Masons, the Rosicurians, and the Illumanti, but instead presents the history and the teachings of these orders in a straightforward and informative manner. - Aloha, He'Ping, Om, Shalom, Salaam. He must be white, he must be male, and he must be rich. He must also belong to certain elite clubs and institutions which help to distinguish him from those he is called upon to rule. George Bush is a member of Skull and Bones, an elite secret society open only to an elect 15 males in their senior year at Yale University. If this club appears somewhat exclusionary, don't worry; they have made great strides in the past few years. Recent Bones inductees include a few blacks, gays, and even some foreign students. However, it has been said that if women were ever allowed into the secret "tomb" (meeting place) of Skull and Bones, the tomb would "have to be bulldozed." The importance of Skull and Bones is not that it provides good gossip about young males doing strange things in tombs, but that it provides a certain bond between members which they carry for life. Membership to Skull and Bones is the first initiation into the world of power politics and capitalism. It is somewhat akin to a "junior" old boy's network. One of the interesting aspects of this secret society is the number of Bones members, who, after graduation, move on to do intelligence work. There has even been informed speculations that there is a "Bones cell" in the C.I.A. Wheather there is a Bones cell or not in the C.I.A. is open to interesting debate. We can, however, examine the histories of several Bonesmen who have gone on to illustrious careers in intelligence work. One of the most unusual Bonesmen is the Reverend William Sloane Coffin, Jr. Known best for his anti-Vietnam war activities and his political activism at Riverside Church in New York City, Sloane Coffin was recruited by the C.I.A. shortly after he graduated from Yale in 1949. Although his tenure at the Agency was short, he is one example of the C.I.A.'s use of the secret society to fill their ranks. Another illustrious Skull and Bones member with close ties to the C.I.A. is arch conservative and renowned propagandist, William F. Buckley. According to several experts on the C.I.A., Buckley began his cooperation with the Agency while he was in Mexico City in 1952, where his good friend, E. Howard Hunt, the C.I.A. station chief at the time. As an interesting aside, Buckley and Bush (as well as many other Washington and business elite) are members of the "prestigious" older -boys California getaway, "The Bohemian Club". It is not surprising, given the Buckley family's wealth and status, that Bill's older brother, James Buckley, is also a member of Skull and Bones. From 1981-82 Buckley was Under Secretary of State for Security Assistance, Science, and Technology where it was his job to see that U.S. military aid went to support the right regimes. He once stated that C.I.A. covert activities in Chile, which led to the overthrow of democratically-elected Salvador Allende, were necessary because, "It was only by virtue of covert help by the United States that these free institutions were able to survive in the face of increasingly repressive measures by the Allende regime. Buckley was also directly connected to the work of the Chilean secret police, DINA. In September 1976, DINA agents assassinated former Chilean diplomat Orlando Leterlier and his colleague, Ronni Moffitt in Washington D.C. "Independent researchers verified through the F.B.I. and Department of Justice - that on September 14, 1976, one week before the Letelier assassination, Michael Townley and Guillermo Novo [two DINA agents involved in the assassination] drove to the office of Senator James Buckley in New York City for a meeting. Buckley had helped finance trips to Chile for Novo and others close to the killling. When C.I.A. agent David Atlee Phillips was accused of being involved in assassination he started an organization entitled "Challenge: An Intelligence Officers' Legal Action Fund." The board of "Challenge" included former C.I.A. director William Colby, former C.I.A. Inspector General Lyman Kirkpatrick, former intelligence officer Richard Stillwell, and interestingly, James Buckley. Hugh Cunningham, Bonesman from the class of 1934, is a Rhodes Scholar with a lengthy career in C.I.A. He was in the Agency from 1947 to 1973 during which time he served in top positions with the Clandestine Services, the Board of National Estimates, and was the Director of Training from 1969-73. He also served with the C.I.A.'s precursor, the Central Intelligence Group from 1945-47. William Bundy is a Bonesman from the class of 1939. Bundy began his intelligence career in the OSS during World War II. From

J2 I have nothing against socialism. If it's good enough J2 for rich capitalists, it's good enough for me. Foxter wrote: Aren't you confusing oligarchism with socialism? No I'm not. They are oligarchs only because they enjoy the benefits of socialism by controlling the government. The precise description of our political system is plutocratic cleptocracy. A political system devised to help the rich steal. J2 How much of the value of your work goes to lazy freeloaders, and how much goes J2 to your J2 employer, and how much goes into taxes that support the rich and their J2 corporations? Much of it does, that is a choice the government has made. That choice includes allowing employers to keep a portion of their earnings (viz, capitalism). This choice can be made by a dictatorship, democracy or socialist country. Employers' earnings are not an effect of democracy as a cause. Nor are tax levels. I think I agree, but i'm not certain I understand what you mean. Labor value is an economic term and democracy and dictatorship are political terms. J2 In case you don't know it, it costs you MUCH more to subsidize the rich than J2 it does the poor, the lazy, the crippled, the sick, and the insane. Agreed here. A rich lifestyle costs more than a poor lifestyle. In this country many sick and disabled are thankful they are in this country instead of others. This is a ridiculous statement. How do you know this? How do the happy sick and disabled know what it's like to be sick and disabled in other countries? They don't. It's only better to be sick and disabled in this country if you are rich or have a good insurance policy. Forty million of your fellow citizens don't. So for them your statement is absurd. They would be better off in any other industrialized country, and some third world countries with good socialized medicine. It gives me a degree of happiness to support them through taxes. This includes my elderly mother on social security and a good friend on disability. Then you know in a real sense the benefits of socialism. So do the Congress, the military, the professional government bureaucracy, defense contractors, the CIA, the NSA, and ALL LARGE CORPORATIONS. They all receive the benefits of socialism. But WE, the ordinary working people who create the wealth they all live on, are constantly brainwashed into thinking that socialism is bad. It works. Well J2 ... you ALMOST started to, for once, make sense on this topic - until those last absurdities about Christians being PURE "communists". Those inanities you prattled simply show that you have no true understanding, or definition of either terms. Using your "logic" one could extrapolate from "St" Paul's words, when he states that if a man does not work he ought not eat; "For even when we were with you, this we commanded you, that if any would not work, neither should he eat." (2 Thessalonians 3:10) - to conclude that Christians, were down-in-the-gutter, lets get dirt greedy, a dog-eat-dog breed, of the most extreme element of pernicious, and parasitic type of Economic Rationalist Capitalist pigs on earth. Now this, in some cases may be true of organised rapacious religion, which struts upon its own connived stage-show, camouflaged in a Christ-like facade. But behind the mask - is not the spirit nor doctrine of Christ. True Christians, were neither adherents of, Religionism, Communism, nor Capitalism. They taught personal and direct experience with God without the "temple" religion baggage, personal responsibility in civil life but not the worship of Caesar, moral responsibility for the plight of their fellow man - and in trade; that whilst one is required earn ones way, never to forget that all one does bears consequences on the many; but also, whilst the "many" were needful, there was "One" above the State - who was their ultimate arbiter of truth, law, justice and love - the final Judge of all men and women. Christians transcended sundry and all "isms", and simply remained - simply Christian. - Original Message - From: "Nurev Ind Research" [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Sunday, April 30, 2000 5:34 AM Subject: Re: [CTRL] Secret Societies and the NWO Nicky Molloy wrote: http://members.xoom.com/biblebelieve/masonry.htm Many links Secret Societies and the NWO The New World Order Is this scheme to establish a New World Order in fact a reality? Yes it is. If you do not believe this I encourage you to study the United Nations documents and also the treaties which, once ratified by individual nations, become INTERNATIONAL LAW. The United Nations created the Commission for Global Governance, if you don't believe this, visit the United Nations website and look it up. The Commission for Global Governance released a report: Our Global Neighbourhood, that predicates a world court, a global tax, and global police force. And the U.S. State Department Publication 7277 outlines a one world police force under the United Nations. So many prominent world leaders are calling for a one world government the intention is obvious. Yet most people are so occupied by life's responsibilities, careers, sports and television, they have little time to study what's going on in the corridors of power. The coming one world government is being set up in the political arena under the flag of the United Nations, through organizations such as the Trilateral Commission, Council of Foreign Relations, the Royal Institute of International Affairs, the Bilderbergers, and the Club of Rome whose members include many world leaders, media personalities and other influential people. The published goal of the Council of Foreign Relations for example is a one world government. And although most have never heard of many of these groups, they do exist, and they are very influential. The core of these groups hold to "illuminist" philosophy. A second focus is economics with free trade agreements, the International Monetary Fund, World Bank and the Bank of International Settlements. The coming global monetary crisis is intended to institute a universal debt-based currency controlled by the International Financiers and issued to individuals against biometric identification cards. This is all about control! The third area of focus is religion. Organizations like the World Council of Churches and the Parliament of World Religions were established to introduce a new world religion. It is based on a pantheistic/humanist philosophy. Pay careful attention when you study the documents and reports published by the United Nations and related organizations. This philosophy is now being taught in the education system and has been implemented under programs such as Goals 2000. The New World Order will be SOCIALISM. Read the United Nations declarations and treaties for proof of this fact. The individual will be subservient to the state. Rights and power reside in and derive from the state, not the individual. I usually don't read your postings because you have no critical faculties whatsoever. But I just have to respond to this foolishness. The NWO is driven by Capitalists. It is Capitalism which is being established worl

Thank you for this post! You have reminded me to stop working once in awhile and enjoy the fruits of my labor. That's hard won labor even though it is Monday through Friday, 9-5 with good clean working conditions and COLA's. So, maybe I'll go shopping today. Maybe bake a cake. Plant some flowers. Read a book. Or, perhaps I will go through my goods and donate them to those who are unable because of [politics] to have enough food, shelter and clothing. Question: are you personally for or against labor unions (in a capitalistic environment in the 2lst century)? + I'm not sure who you are talking to in your post, but I'll answer your question about unions. I am very much against the unions that exist in this country. They are allowed to exist for the same reason that the FDA is allowed to exist. They protect the corporations from their workers, just as the FDA protects drug companies from the public. All unions today are corporate capitalists. The anti capitalist unions were wiped out by corporate goons and the Feds prior to WWII. I believe that the only solution left for ordinary people is to take ownership of money making enterprises. Government owned means of production has led to concentration of wealth for the party elites and crap for their citizens. Private ownership of the means of production isn't much better. Worker ownership of the means of production has not yet been tried on a large scale. It has been successful on a small scale. This is the only way to get rid of all the parasites who live off of my labor. [CTRL] Secret Societies
-Caveat Lector- from: Secret Societies http://www.freedomdomain.com/secretso.htm Secret Societies control the world. That's all there is to it. They always have and until people wake up and learn their secrets and how they control us, they always will. There are many secret societies in the world today and not all of them are on the same side. Some secret societies create BOTH SIDES, and really work together although it would not appear so on the surface. Probably, the most secret, mysterious, oldest and most powerful secret society is the Priory Of Sion. This is only an estimation, not an accusation. I would not assume they are the most dangerous, although I cannot say for sure either way. They are definitely near the top of the research ladder. I do not consider Leonardo Da Vinci or Sir Isaac Newton to be Evil Men, on the contrary, they were probably wise benevolent Illuminated Rosicrusions. One thing for sure, they were Rosicrusions and both members of the Royal Society and their knowledge did not come from inside them. It was passed on to them . They were Both Grand Masters of the Priory Of Sion. From the earliest times of Egypt and the bricklayers of the pyramids, the MASONS have been a storehouse of information. To protect their trade and to retain the secrets of the sacred geometry sciences, they revealed little information. Later in England, Spain, France and Germany, and on the Continental United States, the lodges were the perfect opportunity to meet together, discuss business, share secrets, and recruit members. Freemasonry in general poses the greatest threat to the world. This does not mean all Freemasons are bad. Some are very good, the only problem is the good ones don't seem to live too long. Secret Societies maintain their power over members through "RITUAL" programming and members are required to share deep, personal secrets with the other members which are used to blackmail members who would choose to leave or reveal the secrets. In the Case of Captain William Morgan Author of the book "Illustrations of Freemasonry", they just killed him, slit his throat from ear to ear and left his body floating in the river. This act caused an outrage in America in the 1830's and the first third party in the American political system was created, "The Anti-Masons Party". There are literally hundreds of books published throughout Europe spanning several centuries revealing the dangerous existence of these groups and exposing their plans. The Masons themselves claim to be victims of persecution by the catholic church over the centuries, which indeed is the way it would seem on the surface, but a deeper investigation reveals the Vatican to be an element of secret societies. In 1776, when Adam Weishaupt formed the Illuminati in Bavaria, he had a plan to draft his organization onto freemasonry and use the secrecy of the Masonic lodges to recruit members from within freemasonry into the Illuminati by telling them that it was he who held the key to the higher degrees. His plan was to create a secret organization that would control the world behind the scenes for the ultimate "benefit" of humanity by making wars obsolete, the poor wealthy, removing racial and national boundaries, removing the responsibility of the parents to raise their children and forming a communist one-world government, but the only problem was first he would have to create a few wars, abolish religion, and many people would have to die in the process. Well, this was o.k. to Weishaupt because " THE ENDS JUSTIFIED THE MEANS" as he was quoted to say. So he figured he wouldn't tell anyone the bad part until later as they climbed the latter and would put up with more in order to retain their position and power in society. Weishaupt went to work to recruit the leaders of society as well as the rich and prestigious. Within a few short years there were hundreds of "Illuminated Lodges" in Europe and dozens in America. At the time of the Revolutionary War and the signing of the Declaration of Independence, the Illuminati were rumored to be working to destroy the republic. George Washington wrote about them in his diaries and discussed the possible links to the Eastern Banking Establishment as well as the dissension in his ranks being possibly attributed to their propaganda. The Illuminati seized on their opportunity to grab power in 1789 in France during the French Revolution. Sentiments against religion and the Monarchy were spread by the Illuminati controlled printing presses and the booksellers pushed all kinds of new propaganda to incite the people to revolution. When it was all over and the people thought they had taken the power for themselves, "SURPRISE", the Illuminati secretly held the reigns of new power in the French Assembly. [CTRL] SECRET SOCIETIES AND THE STATE.
-Caveat Lector- from: Arena Magazine 1890s - An old rant. Raises some interesting questions about secrecy. Om k - SECRET SOCIETIES AND THE STATE. BY J. M. FOSTER. IT has been authoritatively stated that "there are in the United States over fifty distinct secret orders, with over 70,000 lodges and 5,500,000 members. This does not include members of the various labor organizations, or the 500,000 members of secret military orders, such as the G. A. R., or those connected with college secret fraternities. These numbers will not include as many persons, since one man is often a member of two or more societies, but it is safe to say that in all there are fully 6,000.000 persons in this country held in the coil-, of Secretism."* Has the state any duty to perform with reference to this gigantic power, which is growing at the rate of 300,000 members per annum?[*Report on Secret Societies In Reformed Presbyterian Synod, June, 1897. ] This leads to another inquiry: What is the nature and province of the state? I answer, 1. The state is not a voluntary association. A man may join a voluntary association or not, just as lie elects. But has he this option in civil society? He is born into the state, and is by nature subject to its laws. The corporation and the nation differ as greatly as the artificial and the natural. The corporation is the creature of the state, is responsible to the state; and appeal can always be had from it to the state. But the state is the creature of God, accountable to none but Him for the -use it makes of the great power-, with which He has invested it. "It is something monstrous," said Thomas Arnold of Rugby, "that the ultimate powers in human life should be destitute of the sense of right and wrong"; and that comes only from a sense of responsibility to God. 2. It is not a social compact. The atheist Hobbes of Malmesbury originated this idea. Denying the existence of any fixed standard of right, and consequently that there could be any such thing as virtue or vice, this speculative philosopher resolved all law into one, the will of the legislature. But who were his disciples? None but the godless, the dissipated, the scorners of all that is sacred. The heart of England was shocked at its blasphemy. It was stoutly resisted by the great thinkers of tile seventeenth century as undermining the foundations of civil society and absorbing justice in the consciousness of power. After the Long Parliament, Hobbes fled to Paris to escape the evils of his own doctrines. The clearest assertion of this doctrine was in France, and its highest development -was in the Contrat Social of Rousseau. But the dissemination of this doctrine cost that nation the Reign of Terror. There can be no doubt that this theory had its influence in the Convention which framed our national Constitution in 1787 , for, as Franklin said, with three or four exceptions the members thought prayers unnecessary. Such a convention would be expected to give us a constitution that does not acknowledge Almighty God as the source of all authority and power, nor the Lord Jesus Christ as the divinely appointed Ruler of nations, nor the Bible as the fountain of all law. But the American people never have voted and never would vote to reject the higher law and Lawgiver. 3. It is God's moral ordinance. It is that settled order of things which is manifestly in harmony with the divine will. It has its necessity in the constitution of our nature, and its authority in God's word: "The powers that be are ordained of God." It is clothed with authority and powers Which transcend all human institutions, and thus becomes the heaven-ordained and heaven-commissioned agent representing the divine authority among men. I. The being of the state is from God. The Creator has established divine institutions among men for specific purposes. The family is a divine institution. Marriage is an ordinance of God. It is God's appointed method of restraining vice, fostering virtue, multiplying the human race, and developing the better sentiments of the human heart. It has its necessity in the very constitution of our nature, and its authority in God's word: "They twain shall be one flesh." The Church, is a divine institution. It is "the kingdom of heaven" among men. Its organization is from God. "Upon this Rock I will build my church." Its authority is from God. "I will give to thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven." Its constitution is from God. "Unto them were committed the oracles of God." Its laws are from God. "Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you." Its commission is from God. "Go ye into all the World and preach the gospel to every creature." Its duties as the witness for the truth have been enjoined. "Ye are my witnesses, saith the Lord." The state is another divine institution. It is the arrangement, the appointment, the contrivance of heaven for man. It is the divinely appointed custodian of the rights of
