Re: nedit gives X-error of failed request - also issues with (x)emacs
Hello again, Thanks for the help and feedback so far. However, I am still struggling with the keyboard issue, i.e. I cannot use it in any editor after updating the X11 package earlier this week. I have just updated once more (reinstalling the X11 package), rebooted, but that did not help either. I also ran ash and did /bin/rebaseall, but that did not change. I have no Microsoft Services for Unix installed either. The tmp/XWin.log looks similar as the one I sent two days ago. I am no expert whatsoever as I use cygwin as an extremely useful tool rather than a developer, so I would highly appreciate if someone could point me how I can sort this out in an easy way, by either suggestions to correct it or by steps to take to go back to the previous version. That would be highly apprciated ! From the reports, it seems that many people have issues after updating. As mentioned, updates typically go very smooth with cygwin, except this time for me. Looking forward to hearing from you, With best regards / Vennlig hilsen Maarten On Wed, Nov 12, 2008 at 8:39 PM, Maarten Vanneste [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Hello, I am currently at home (where I have not yet updated for a few days). I usually start it by double-clicking the XWin starter followed by the cygwin both on the desktop (coming from the installation). My .bashrc looks fairly simply, as I do not set anything in particular (except some GMT and SeismicUnix). Nothing like these parameters you specify. I would nevertheless expect to have the latest setup, as this is something I do weekly. Again, no problems until this update this morning, neither at home nor at the office. I have noticed that the icon indeed has changed, as mentioned, suggesting it to have updated. Re: nedit gives X-error of failed request - also issues with (x)emacs
Hello, Interesting. I quit cygwin including killing the X-server. Restarted my cygwin by double clicking the cygwin icon, executed startxwin.sh, which prompted an X-window to open, in which I can now type ! Going back to the cygwin window in which I typed the startxwin.sh command, I can now open xemacs successfully and can edit. This seems like a solution. So, the x-server shortcut on the desktop may be at odds. This one has the following characteristics: Target type: MS-DOS batch file Target location: Singular Target: C:\cygwin\lib\Singular\startxserver.bat Start in: C:\cygwin\usr\X11R6\bin Should I change somethings there ? The cygwin shortcut has the following properties: Target type: MS-DOS batch file Target location: cygwin Target: C:\cygwin\cygwin.bat Start in: (left blank) I have now made sure to have the full X11 package as well, as I noticed that some (only a handful) were not yet selected. However, I doubt whether this was the reason as cygwin prompts when dependencies occur. The keyboard is set up as American per default, as I think this is much easier to work with over the Norwegian one (or French or whatever). Greatly appreciated ! For the sake of completeness, I have done a new clean, fresh reinstall, only Basic+X11 (see attach.), only the 'minimum', but same results. Note that 'bitstream' are used by default by rxvt, urxvt! See app-defaults/Urxvt, app-defaults/Rxvt: in my .Xdefault I have only changed the size. And these fonts works fine with X11R6.99 (see ref. [1] in my OP). Ok, sorry for the confusion. I've finally tracked down this font :-) The Bitstream Vera Sans Mono truetype font is present in the xorg-x11-fscl-6.8.99.901-1 package, but not in the corresponding source package, it seems probably due to a packaging error. It's not included in the set of fonts available from X.Org currently, so we don't currently have a package for it. (There may be a couple of other fonts which fall into this category) Please bear with me and I'll try to generate a package for this font. In the meantime, you could probably download the font from http://www.gnome.org/fonts/, install the .ttf files into /usr/share/fonts and run fc-cache -- Unsubscribe info: http://cygwin.com/ml/#unsubscribe-simple Problem reports: http://cygwin.com/problems.html Documentation: http://x.cygwin.com/docs/ FAQ: http://x.cygwin.com/docs/faq/

Warning: No xauth data
Started getting this warning on ssh sessions that forward X11 after upgrading to the new X11 package yesterday. I forward X11 on all ssh connections via a line in ~/.ssh/ssh_config. I don't really understand X11 security (and never needed to up until now). Can someone please tell me how to fix this warning or point me to a resource that explains what it is and how to fix it? Google returned about 50 million hits and all I've found so far is messages from other people either asking the same question, or saying to just ingore it. I'm not the type who likes to just ignore a warning if it can be fixed properly. libXaw8 replacement
I use a program (xdvi-xaw.exe, which I obtained from Angelo Graziosi's build of texlive for cygwin) that stopped working after the X11 upgrade. I traced this to the fact that it relied on the (now obsolete) libXaw8 package. Re: XWin won't respond to keyboard
Eric Francis wrote: I've been using cygwin for a while now; but after a recent set of updates, Xwin won't respond to anything from the keyboard (though other cygwin utilities work like xterm/rxvt respond properly). The attached setup.log_20081113 is an extract from /var/log/setup.log when I ran the updates. I ran the setup utility twice: the first time it stalled downloading libGLU1, so I closed out of it and reran. Everything worked fine before the updates, but now no response from the keyboard. I've tried running XWin.exe in various modes (rootless, multiwindow, multiplemonitors) with and without 3rd party window managers (twm, window maker, fluxbox built from source), and while it runs ok and responds the mouse properly, it doesn't respond to anything typed from the keyboard (I type stuff into an xterm window and nothing shows up, no keyboard shortcuts work or anything). I have since tried reinstalling everything (rebooting windows after reinstalling), but with the same results. This has probably been posted several times before but... The new xwin and startup scripts are in a new location. Change your start menu shortcuts from C:\cygwin\usr\X11R6\bin C:\cygwin\bin. You *might* be able to fix it without editing anything by reinstalling the X-start-menu-icons package. It didn't work for me. I had to modify the shortcut it created for the XWin Server and specify the start in field as C:\cygwin\bin. xorg-xserver-1.5.3-2: Dialogs that save their positions keep drifting downwards
Hello, There is a GTK application (gschem from www.geda.seul.org) that saves the position of its sub-dialogs when they close, so they reopen at the same place. Up to now, on Cygwin/X, this didn't always work well: in multi-window mode, dialogs kept reopening a little lower each time, by an amount equal to the title bar height. When xserver-1.5.3-1 came out, I was glad to see it was fixed. However, the symptom reappeared on xserver-1.5.3-2. A minimal testcase is attached, as well as the cygcheck -s -v -r output. [I should add that both the application and the testcase works correctly on GNU/Linux (Ubuntu Intrepid), that is, closed dialogs remember their positions.] Regards, Cesar /* Testcase for: Dialogs that save their positions when closing keep drifting downwards. All the mailer daemon message (which I did read) says is Sorry, your message has been denied due to keywords found in your subject. This is probably due to an off-topic post. It took multiple trial and error attempts changing things to try to work out what it was complaining about. But see my message - it seems (strangely) that running dircolors caused the problem. Dircolo9rs is not X11-related, the X11 directory obviously is, so it's not obvious which is the relevant list to report it on. Since I'm not subscribed to cygwin-xfree, this seemed like a reasonable place to try first. RE: /usr/lib/xeleven replaced
-Original Message- From: Eric Blake To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]; Yes. You probably recently upgraded your installation, without reading the release notes: http://cygwin.com/ml/cygwin-xfree-announce/2008-11/msg0.html It turns out I did install an X11 upgrade two days ago. I thought I'd only added in a gcc component at that time, but looking at the setup log, apparently X11 came with it. So apologies, and ignore what I said about running dircolors seeming to have triggered it. However, I would imagine this will be a common problem for a lot of people since you can't really expect everyone who runs the setup program at cygwin.com to read the release notes for every package that gets installed.
