[darktable-user] Iris Xe shows some OpenCL oomph
Hi, I just tested darktable 3.4 on new (to me) 11th gen. Core i5 and with Intel's Gen12LP (LP: low power) GPU. The latter seems to cut processing time by >50%, from 12s to 5s. This is on Dell XPS 13 Dev. Ed. Ubuntu laptop. All open source. Re: [darktable-user] exiv2, darktable, AVIF, metadata, and ExifTool
Okay, so here is how QT/KDE works… to some extent. Image support is on a system-wide basis, not per application. To get AVIF support, I had to update ECM & Cmake, then install the qt5-avif-plugin. (This means compile all three). Well that did not work, so I compiled (again) Gwenview. Still did not work. [ASIDE] Ubuntu LTS can be a pain to have sometimes. By the time I am done with all my compiles, it will no longer be ubuntu! [/ASIDE] It turns out that the install script for the qt5 plugin did not put things in the places where they are supposed to be. So, I had to copy them manually to the correct locations. Voila!!! Gwenview works! …sorta kinda. No EXIF data since gwenview uses EXIV2 and not ExifTool. Exiv2 version 0.27.3 (and, if I understand correctly, version 0.28.0, when it comes out) does not have support for AVIF metadata. [ASIDE] I remember not so long ago, having to compile exiv2 version 0.27.x just so that I can see metadata in WebP files on my Ubuntu 18.04 LTS. [/ASIDE] Using ExifTool, I can see my EXIF and XMP metadata. (The XMP metadata, I had to copy into it from a JPEG JFIF file, using ExifTool). Thanks to Milos Komarcevic for pointing out that the only reason I have EXIF data in the AVIF files in the first place is because libavif handles the writing of the metadata to begin with, so Exiv2 is not involved. Re: [darktable-user] exiv2, darktable, AVIF, metadata, and ExifTool
Thank you, Patrick. That made me investigate. There exists an AVIF plugin for QT5. This plugin requires ECM version 5.70.0 or greater. Ubuntu LTS (20.04) has version 5.68.0. So two more compiles to try; first, ECM (Extra CMake Modules) version 5.70.0 (or higher), then the qt5 AVIF plugin. Then Gwenview may work…. …Except that I may also have to bring KF5 (and all its parts) up to version 5.70.0 (or higher), also. Currently they are at versions 5.68.0. I will let you know how that works out. Re: [darktable-user] exiv2, darktable, AVIF, metadata, and ExifTool
According to the Geeqie website, they only support… 3FR, ANI, APM, ARW, BMP, CR2, CRW, CUR, DNG, ERF, GIF, ICNS, ICO, JPE/JPEG/JPG, JPS, KDC, MEF, MPO, MOS, MRW, NEF, ORF, PEF, PTX, PBM/PGM/PNM/PPM, PNG, QIF/QTIF (QuickTime Image Format), RAF, RAW, RW2, SR2, SRF, SVG/SVGZ, TGA/TARGA, TIF/TIFF, WMF, XBM, XPM I think that I remember from before, that they did not support WebP. Currently, unless otherwise requested, my final images are in WebP format. Hence, Geeqie is not an option for me. In the future, my workflow may possibly end with AVIF files. That is why I am eager for things to advance in that direction. It may not happen, and that is just fine, but considering the huge collab which exists within AOM, it may be inevitable. Re: [darktable-user] exiv2, darktable, AVIF, metadata, and ExifTool
Okay, I compiled gwenview 20.12.2, and, during compilation, it seems that it uses exiv2, and only recognises FITS, JPEG (JFIF/SPIFF ???), PNG, SVG,TIFF, & WebP. No indication of AVIF support. Installed, and found no AVIF support. (& if it did, would not recognise the metadata). Will try with Geeqie per Šarūnas Burdulis.
