Thank you, Patrick. That made me investigate. There exists an AVIF plugin for QT5. This plugin requires ECM version 5.70.0 or greater. Ubuntu LTS (20.04) has version 5.68.0.
So two more compiles to try; first, ECM (Extra CMake Modules) version 5.70.0 (or higher), then the qt5 AVIF plugin. Then Gwenview may work…. …Except that I may also have to bring KF5 (and all its parts) up to version 5.70.0 (or higher), also. Currently they are at versions 5.68.0. I will let you know how that works out.
