To be more precise: I was trying to create a 'preset' that would crop 
all instances to 'max-area' ... the preset failed.

There is no "max area" as described in David message either, maybe
"largest area"?

And the cropping in perspective correction is persistant between edit
for me.

So, lack of precision and things that cannot be reproduced... Hard to
tell what could be wrong.

configuration. Eg. "recursive directory traversal..." will be off/false

DT defaults to have recursive scanning disabled and since there is no
option to change this behaviour from the command line - IMHO - then the
behaviour is as expected. (--library :memory: ensures everything is
default)

This used to work simply in the early days of DT2. Now:

1. get structure
2. automatic fit
3. automatic cropping (in that order)

The automatic cropping must be the last action in that module, then
switch to another module, then it will apply the "auto crop".

yes, it *is* set and was set to 5 levels but I do not find that parameter
now.  :(

darktablerc shows:  show_folder_levels=5

Have you tried setting the option "recursive directory traversal..." in import 
settings? 

 I'm not quite sure what darktable actually "sees" with the first command you 
gave, where the wildcard is interpreted by the shell.

The result with your second command seems logical, if there are no images in 
/paka/xhome/Pictures/2021/. Recursive traversal should solve that.
