Re: [darktable-user] darktable 3.8.0 released

2022-01-04 Thread Terry Pinfold
Hi Bernard,
I too use the duplicates manager in the DT for the same reason as
yourself. I like that you can name the duplicate to give it meaning. I also
use snapshots to compare subtle editing options, especially when dealing
with sharpening or noise reduction. I hope that in the future we will get
the ability to rename the snapshots as I am forced to try to remember what
each one is or to make notes on paper. You mention the Velvia module which
I previously used to add colorfulness to images very carefully. I now use
the color balance RGB module which has a preset called add basic
colorfulness. I used this preset as a starting point to learn how the
module could be effectively used to control chroma and saturation to
produce the colourfulness I want in the images. I then made some presets of
my own to suit my needs. It is an essential step in many of my edits now.
Regards
Terry

For this I usually create a duplicate in darkroom and reset it's history to
start from scratch. Since the 3.x Versions I frequently do this with older
photos I need for a given purpose today and always find the new result more
appealing, especially the color shades are more subtle and not like before some
kind of sledgehammer Velvia.
And this way I only have a few more kB of storage for another XMP.

The database and xmps might be corrupted when reverting to an earlier version.
That's why darktable creates a backup of the database with the first start of a
new version.
You might use this backup when reverting.

My understanding is images edited in a later version of darktable would
normally not be correctly edited in a previous version of DT if someone chose
to revert to an earlier version. That would often be the case with any program,
not just Darktable. It would be unusual to want to revert DT to a previous
version. I did have one Chinese student who had Windows setup in Chinese and
V3.6 would not function correctly on her computer, so we reverted her to 3.4
and all was working again. I informed the developers and I believe this issue
has now been resolved in 3.8.

My edits from 3.6 have been faithfully carried over to 3.8. Maybe someone else
has had a different experience. BTW, when I do an edit, I always export the
image as a 16-bit to produce a new image file with the look I want. Then later
when I get a new version of DT or my skills improve over the years, I might
have another attempt at editing the RAW file in the hope of getting a better
image. I don't depend on my edits being saved between versions of DT, but that
is just my personal preference.

It is a sad world when we have to worry about top or bottom posting. Just as
long as we are posting. Let our web-based clients do as they want. DT 3.8 is a
great improvement over 3.6. Filmic works a little nicer, the LMMSE demosiac
option is incredible for reducing noise in high ISO images, the denoise
profile works so much better, and there are some nice presets in the new
diffuse or sharpen module to get you started. I recommend watch Aurelien's

Hi

Oddly when I download DT 3.8 for ubuntu 20.04 from the open build service apt
informs me that my current DT 3.6.1 will be downgraded. If I try and install
the downloaded deb via the gui installer I am informed that DT will be removed
?? When I add the open repository to sources and apt update I am informed that
all packages are up to date.

Guess I need to wait a while.

Same issue here. I tried to install 3.8 on Debian Next, but the
packages for Debian Next and Debian 11 both require libexiv2-27 >=
0.27.5-1.1 which is not available in Debian Next or 11. Looks like the
3.8 packages can't be installed on a regular Debian system:

dpkg: Abhängigkeitsprobleme verhindern Konfiguration von darktable:
darktable hängt ab von libexiv2-27 (>= 0.27.5-1.1); aber:
Version von libexiv2-27:amd64 auf dem System ist 0.27.3-3.1.

I did not try installing further SuSE packages, I prefer not mixing up
my system too much.

Cheers

Description: virtual lighttable and darkroom for photographers
Darktable manages your digital negatives in a database and lets
   you view
them  through a zoomable lighttable. it also enables you to
   develop raw
  images and enhance them.
  .
It tries to fill the gap between the many excellent existing free
raw converters and image management tools (such as ufraw or f-spot).
The user interface is built around efficient caching of image
   metadata and
mipmaps, all stored in a database. the user will always be able
   to interact,
even if the full resolution image is not yet loaded.
  .
All editing is fully non-destructive and only operates on cached
   image
buffers for display. the full image is only converted during
   export. The
frontend is written in gtk+/cairo, the database uses sqlite3, raw
   image
loading is done using rawspeed, high-dynamic range, and standard
   image formats
such as jpeg are also supported. The core operates completely on
   floating
point values, so darktable can not only be used for photography
   but also for
scientifically acquired images or output of renderers (high
   dynamic range).

Notice that the Depend: section says: libexiv2-27 (>= 0.27.5-1.1).

FWIW, The system I'm trying to install on has Debian testing (bookworm),
but both the Debian Next and Debian 11 darktable packages failed to
install with the same dependency error.

Pascal,

I've read through The Fine Manual several times looking for a means
to duplicate the importing process I had used through v3.4.  To be more
specific, I read section 1.4.2, import & review, section 2 in its
entirety, and section 9.4 lighttable.  In reading through the Table of
Contents, I saw nothing else that pertained to the job I need to
accomplish.  If I've missed something or misunderstood it, please feel
free to enlighten me by referring me to a specific section.  My copy of
The Fine Manual is loaded with yellow stickies that mark sections that I
have found helpful, so adding a few more will not hurt my feelings.
Thanks.

Both the Debian 11 and Debian Next OBS packages depend on libexiv2-27

## The Big Ones

- The keyboard shortcut system has been entirely reworked and extended to allow
you
to control darktable with other devices, for example, MIDI devices
and game controllers. Standard keyboard/mouse shortcuts can now make use
of mouse movements (horizontal, vertical, diagonal) as well as multiple
button/key presses and short or long presses/clicks.

Please note that any shortcuts you have previously created are not
transferred
to the new functionality and will need to be redefined in darktable 3.8.

- New diffuse or sharpen module, allowing you to simulate or to revert
diffusion processes to reconstruct images from lens blur, hazing,
sensor low-pass filter, or noise. It can also be used to simulate
watercolor smudges, increase local contrast, simulate blooming or
apply surface blur. Special rules can be defined to specifically
diffuse across or along edges, as well as to avoid sharpening or
   blurring them.

- New scene-referred blurs module, to synthesize motion and lens blurs in a
parametric
and physically-accurate way. This module allows you to define the motion
path or the lens
diaphragm and then generates the corresponding blur.

- Perspective correction module has been renamed to rotate and perspective
and now allows you to manually define correction settings by drawing lines
or rectangles on the image (replicating keystone correction functionality
from the deprecated crop and rotate module)

- Added support for multiple images in the print view. The page can be
filled with multiple areas, each of which can be moved around and placed on
the page with the ability to snap to a grid for precision.

- A new LMMSE demosaic algorithm has been introduced. This algorithm is
particularly
suited to high ISO and/or noisy images.

- The composition guides from the crop module are now available globally and no
longer require the crop module to be activated.

- The Canon raw CR3 format is now supported (see list of supported cameras in
the
section below). This support is provided by LibRaw and requires at least
exiv2 version
   0.27.4 with BMFF support activated.

- The color checker profiling tool, introduced in darktable 3.4 as part of the
color calibration module, is now normalized patch-wise in exposure to
discard the effect
of uneven lighting and fall-off when shooting color checkers hand-held and
on-location.
This robustly decreases the residual average dE after calibration and
noticeably
helps to recover natural dark blues while preventing yellow shifts in
highlights.

Re: [darktable-user] darktable 3.8.0 released

2021-12-24 Thread Willy Williams
And after reading p. 285 in The Fine Manual, I find that the "A" machine
is using the display-referred module order, but have yet to find where
that can be rectified to the scene-referred module order.  Ideas are
most welcome.

First off, Merry Christmas to all, and thanks aplenty to the
developers of darktable for yet another release.

Now to a point of confusion for me. I have two basically identical Win
10 machines on which darktable is installed.  In checking my
configurations after loading v3.8 this morning I find that both
machines are set to scene-referred (preferences - processing).  All
other options are identical on both machines.  Yet when I open a photo
in darkroom on the "B" machine, the module order precisely follows the
scene-referred module order specified in Section 12.7 on p. 282 of The
Fine Manual as follows:

watermark
framing
monochrome
lowlight vision
velvia
color correction
shadows and highlights
contrast brightness saturation
color balance rgb
sharpen
astrophoto denoise
censorize
crop
exposure
retouch
rotate and perspective
haze removal
lens correction
denoise (profiled)
white balance

On the "A" machine, the modules selected are the same, yet the order
is mostly different as follows:

watermark
framing
velvia
sharpen
color correction
contrast brightness saturation
monochrome
lowlight vision
shadows and highlights
astrophoto denoise
color balance rgb
censorize
haze removal
crop
rotate and perspective
lens correction
retouch
exposure
denoise (profiled)
white balance

Those modules in red are NOT in the sequence specified in Section 12.7
on p. 282 of The Fine Manual, and as yet, I've not found a means of
correcting the module order to be in sync with the specified order in
The Fine Manual.  Can anyone point me in the right direction to
correct the module order on the "A" machine?  We certainly do not wish
to upset the module order gods on Christmas Eve. Thanks for any insights.

Important note: to make sure that darktable can keep on supporting the raw file format for your camera, *please* read [this post](https://discuss.pixls.us/t/raw-samples-wanted/5420?u=lebedevri) on how/what raw samples you can contribute to ensure that we have the *full* raw sample set for your camera under CC0 license!- Almost 3915 commits to darktable+rawspeed since 3.6- 571 pull requests handled- 265 issues closed## The Big Ones- The keyboard shortcut system has been entirely reworked and extended to allow you to control darktable with other devices, for example, MIDI devices and game controllers. Standard keyboard/mouse shortcuts can now make use of mouse movements (horizontal, vertical, diagonal) as well as multiple button/key presses and short or long presses/clicks. Please note that any shortcuts you have previously created are not transferred to the new functionality and will need to be redefined in darktable 3.8.- New diffuse or sharpen module, allowing you to simulate or to revert diffusion processes to reconstruct images from lens blur, hazing, sensor low-pass filter, or noise. It can also be used to simulate watercolor smudges, increase local contrast, simulate blooming or apply surface blur. Special rules can be defined to specifically diffuse across or along edges, as well as to avoid sharpening or blurring them.- New scene-referred blurs module, to synthesize motion and lens blurs in a parametric and physically-accurate way. This module allows you to define the motion path or the lens diaphragm and then generates the corresponding blur.- Perspective correction module has been renamed to rotate and perspective and now allows you to manually define correction settings by drawing lines or rectangles on the image (replicating keystone correction functionality from the deprecated crop and rotate module)- Added support for multiple images in the print view. The page can be filled with multiple areas, each of which can be moved around and placed on the page with the ability to snap to a grid for precision.- A new LMMSE demosaic algorithm has been introduced. This algorithm is particularly suited to high ISO and/or noisy images.- The composition guides from the crop module are now available globally and no longer require the crop module to be activated.- The Canon raw CR3 format is now supported (see list of supported cameras in the section below). This support is provided by LibRaw and requires at least exiv2 version 0.27.4 with BMFF support activated.- The color checker profiling tool, introduced in darktable 3.4 as part of the color calibration module, is now normalized patch-wise in exposure to discard the effect of uneven lighting and fall-off when shooting color checkers hand-held and on-location. This robustly decreases the residual average dE after calibration and noticeably helps to recover natural dark blues while preventing yellow shifts in highlights.## Other New Features And Changes- The denoise (profiled) module now uses wavelets mode by default and its default settings in Y0U0V0 mode have been improved.- Flip buttons have been added to the orientation module (functionality moved from crop and rotate).- Background jobs handling has been removed from preferences.- Much of the SSE-specific code has been removed, since compiler-generated code is usually faster.- The darktable-generate-cache script now displays filenames and image IDs.- File name matches in the collections module are now faster.- Mask handling is faster.- Processing module order can now be automatically applied based on image properties.- Folder status is properly refreshed when a mount is changed.- An area color picker is selectable by using a Right-Click in addition to the existing Ctrl+click
