[Debconf-discuss] Fwd: [ooni-talk] Report - OONI Partner Gathering 2017
Hi all, I dunno if it's late in the day to be sharing about this or not but saw this in my inbox recently. It was held recently in Ongario which if memory serves correctly is nearby to montreal (2-3 hours by train). If somebody can reach out to the ooni people maybe this might bring awareness about the the project. I am ccing the pkd-privacy-maintainers as well as they also have similar goals so it's possible somebody from that team could reach out and either do a small eventish or give a talk or two together. Sorry for the noise and if it's too late in the day. -- Forwarded message -- From: Maria XynouDate: Mon, 24 Jul 2017 15:49:46 +0200 Subject: [ooni-talk] Report - OONI Partner Gathering 2017 To: ooni-t...@lists.torproject.org Hi Oonitarians, Two weeks ago we hosted the*first OONI Partner Gathering*! :) The event was hosted at the University of Toronto on 10th & 11th July 2017. The aim of this two-day event was to bring our international partners together to share skills, knowledge, and research findings. We reflected on our collaboration over the last year, and we brainstormed on future goals and priorities to improve our collaboration on the study of internet censorship. Today we published a report which provides an overview of the event, its sessions, partner challenges and needs, future goals and priorities, and event outcomes. *Read the report here: https://ooni.torproject.org/post/ooni-partner-gathering-2017/* You can also find the event's agenda and all of the session notes here: https://github.com/OpenObservatory/gatherings/tree/master/partner-gatherings/2017-07-toronto All the best, Maria. -- Maria Xynou Research and Partnerships Coordinator Open Observatory of Network Interference (OONI) https://ooni.torproject.org/ PGP Key Fingerprint: 2DC8 AFB6 CA11 B552 1081 FBDE 2131 B3BE 70CA 417E -- Regards, Shirish Agarwal शिरीष अग्रवाल My quotes in this email licensed under CC 3.0 http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc/3.0/ http://flossexperiences.wordpress.com EB80 462B 08E1 A0DE A73A 2C2F 9F3D C7A4 E1C4 D2D8 signature.asc Description: PGP signature ___ Debconf-discuss mailing list Debconf-discuss@lists.debconf.org http://lists.debconf.org/mailman/listinfo/debconf-discuss

Dear Friends, Had spams 2 weeks back, was hospitalized for 2 weeks, doctors have told me 6 weeks more for full recovery hence regretfully I have to take back my bursary application. I do hope to follow up on what happens in Debconf 2017 once I'm fully recovered by videos. Apologies for any mistakes but guess still picking up pieces one by one. I do intend to apply for Taiwan 2018 Debconf once I'm fully recovered. Hope there is successfull Debconf 2017. [Debconf-discuss] McGill RVC and bicycle
Dear all, Few months ago, there was talk of bicycles and Montreal being full of bicycle paths. While I did see https://www.openstreetmap.org/directions?engine=mapzen_bicycle=45.5504%2C-73.5536%3B45.5658%2C-73.5538 Unfortunately, that link is to and fro Hotel Universal to the College, while I did read the bit about the different options from RVC to college https://wiki.debconf.org/wiki/DebConf17/Accomodation#Directions_to_and_from_the_venue, does that mean that it is not feasible to use bicycles to commute one way ? Could somebody share how far that would be and if it would have many turns ? [Debconf-discuss] advice while making Debconf proposals
Dear all, I should have shared this probably 2 weeks ago when proposal window had just begin but the advice got triggered when a colleague asked as any guidelines to follow. While I did share some things, I figured later that bits of it might be relevant to the larger pool of people who would attend debconf for the first time as well. Mind you this is from my personal experience so it might vary from one person to the next - Dear X, I would be very very careful about what sort of things you would do in Debconf. Last year I told 10 things and did not do even half of those. The thing is Debconf is overwhelming, it's pretty easy to get into touristy things, attending talks which you hadn't thought of attending. What I mean to say there is a fair amount of unpredictability in Debconf and it will be good to be open for that. For instance, I found for myself socializing was my thing (meeting people and recoginizing people who were just IRC nicknames) rather than clunking down on the lappy because that is what I/We do anyhow all the time. As shared this is 'personal advice' but am sure lots of the experienced people could also add their own 2 bits or share what they think might be relevant. Maybe we could get few advises and put it as a separate page on the wiki as well (might be helpful for newbies) What do people think about it ? On a slightly different context, I was reminded of meeting a certain gentleman from South Africa who was fond of high-brow words. For few minutes/seconds I thought he might be the next 'Naom Chomsky' only to realize later he just enjoyed using high-brow/power words. While I found it better/easier to use as many common words as possible because when people are trying to understand you, they have to overcome your accent, your speed of talking (I tried to be slow but still) , so having high-brow/power words might be good but only if you have the audience who can understand the context. Having a varied audience like in a debconf it might be preferable to stick to common words when giving your presentation. Having said the above, there are two half-formed/half-baked ideas in my head which people - 1. Etymology of words - You could just have an etymological analysis of just 10 words which are being used/being prolific in the last 2-5 years but sadly people use it in the wrong context/wrong construct . One such word being 'hacker' which 'most' people think means somebody who breaks into systems rather than somebody who is tinkering/problem solving around issues plaguing her(is) system. The ideal word for the former would be 'cracker'. I am sure there are many more like that. I am sure there are people who have been part of CCC Germany (Chaos Communication Congress) who could enlighten us quite a bit from some of the words/terms spoken therein. English is a very funny language as the word/s get particular context in the way they are laid. It would be a pretty valuable service if somebody could provide it. I, at the very least would be interested in attending such a talk. 2. Epistomological outlook about Debian - Debian is weird in the sense it has some very passionate people. I myself got inflamed (more involved) after visiting Debconf and this I guess is the case with other people as well. I dunno if somebody has taken time to do an epistomological study about Debian https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Epistemology - why is it that it drives people so passionately ? What could be to make it better ? There is much to be shared here but would leave it at that as the e-mail has become too long as well, what was supposed to be just two lines of advice has quickly become 10 paragraphs long. Look forward to response and till later. -- Regards, Shirish Agarwal शिरीष अग्रवाल My quotes in this email licensed under CC 3.0 http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc/3.0/ http://flossexperiences.wordpress.com EB80 462B 08E1 A0DE A73A 2C2F 9F3D C7A4 E1C4 D2D8 ___ Debconf-discuss mailing list Debconf-discuss@lists.debconf.org http://lists.debconf.org/mailman/listinfo/debconf-discuss

While I see that it both has an upside as well as downside, has anybody tried any non-scientific runs to see how much difference does it make in an actual install using that option ? Another query, is the eatmydata-udeb available in net install image ? I do see that eatmydata and libeatmydata are both optional utilities. I do see however that both the binary package as well as the library are pretty small (less than 100 kb together) and doesn't have any dependencies apart from depending on each other as well as libc6 all of which should be possible to have in net-install image. On the same/similar topic though, there is a bit of news or link/clarification that is missing though . For instance in the net install page it says - https://www.debian.org/CD/netinst/ What types of network connections are supported during installation? The network install assumes that you have a connection to the Internet. Various different ways are supported for this, like analogue PPP dial-up, Ethernet, WLAN (with some restrictions) But it doesn't clear what restrictions are there on WLAN and if they could be resolved in due course (i.e. during the minimal installation or later). [Debconf-discuss] installation report on installation failure and having net install for minimal installations .
Hi all, Sorry, this would be a bit long - As we are getting near to Debconf there are two workshops I would like to see and both probably are part of Debian QA . 1. Installation report on installation failure - At times when you are installing Debian either on too new hardware or too old, obsolete hardware, at times the installation fails invariably/probably due to a driver issue. The device I usually use to do are usb disk/s as I find them to be more convenient as well as having better shelf-life than most cheap DVD's. Some good usb disks have lasted even four years and beyond as well. When the installation is a success, I know I could just run reportbug and put 'installation report' as the package and it would tell/share that the installation was a success. My query is how to save installation report and send it in the instance when the installation is a failure. I know that details of what worked or didn't is in the memory (RAM) but how to save it to usb disk/usb thumbdrive ? I had read somewhere that one way to do it is if I have say an 8 or 16 GiB usb disk/hdd I could partition it, put the iso image on one partition and save the report on another partition . But how to do that remains a mystery ? There also may be other ways in which the installation report could be sent but how could that be done I'm unsure. 2. A related scenario is if some hardware is dead - AFAIK in debian-installer there aren't any tools to check the health of the hardware. For instance, we do have smartmontools to check the health of ATA and SCSI disks but that is an optional tool and nothing embedded within debian-installer. The end result is it's a binary, either it's a successful installation or a failure with the system administrator being none the wiser as to why the installation failed :( Maybe, just maybe somebody could share how to do installation reports when failures happen and and send it to debian and share what error messages to look for in case hardware/some component is dead. 3. Net install for minimal installations - Doing full installations is very time-consuming. Here the usb disks as well as ATA/IDE are both bottlenecks and a desktop install takes at least 30-45 minutes. I know/have heard of both usb 3.1 and SSD but both are expensive (SSD much more so) and SSD's still have issues - an example - https://www.theregister.co.uk/2017/02/16/hpe_blames_solid_state_drive_failure_for_australian_tax_office_outage/ There is though Intel's non-volatile memory which I'm hopeful for - https://www.electronicsweekly.com/news/intels-first-optane-memory-modules-available-next-month-2017-03/ So, currently, one way to beat the installation time blues one idea is perhaps to use debian net-install https://www.debian.org/CD/netinst/ . I could just install that and have grub, the kernel image, terminal interface, console prompt and apt + libapt hooks. If my thinking is right, I could just do the minimal install and any time I want, just edit the sources at /etc/apt/sources.list , do the sources, do an update and have the distribution installed on system/systems over period of time having the latest X version of software all the time. Could we do/simulate a net install workshop and have either no net or patchy net to see how it works or could be made to work in such scenarios ? Are there any volunteers who would like to take either of the above ? I would be very much interested if somebody does make a proposal of any of the above. If anybody has any ideas or tips but would not want to take the workshop but would be interested in attending, maybe share here. If I get some guidance, I would gladly step up for 1. and 3. in case there is interest on the above. 2. is actually something that only people in debian-installer team might be able to take a crack at. Sorry for the long-winded arguments. Looking forward for suggestions, thoughts, ideas, anything. -- Regards, Shirish Agarwal शिरीष अग्रवाल My quotes in this email licensed under CC 3.0 http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc/3.0/ http://flossexperiences.wordpress.com EB80 462B 08E1 A0DE A73A 2C2F 9F3D C7A4 E1C4 D2D8 ___ Debconf-discuss mailing list Debconf-discuss@lists.debconf.org http://lists.debconf.org/mailman/listinfo/debconf-discuss
Re: [Debconf-discuss] US laptop ban and DebConf
Hi all, Call me naive, but I was hoping that somebody would have answers and would also raise questions. For instance, one point being, what if the airlines enters US airspace, doesn't land in US but goes through there to Canada. Wouldn't those airlines be also affected by this ban ? I did have a look at some of the articles around the world on the topic - http://www.foxbusiness.com/features/2017/03/21/airline-electronics-ban-is-protectionism-not-security.html http://www.telegraph.co.uk/travel/lists/what-air-travellers-could-once-change-in-flying-rules-golden-era/ http://www.slate.com/blogs/moneybox/2017/03/21/trump_s_laptop_ban_is_a_giant_middle_finger_to_business_travelers.html http://money.cnn.com/2017/03/21/technology/laptop-ban-safety/ and here is an indian take on the whole thing :) - http://livefromalounge.boardingarea.com/2017/03/22/transfer-via-india-indian-airports-jet-airways-air-india-electronicsban/ -- Regards, Shirish Agarwal शिरीष अग्रवाल My quotes in this email licensed under CC 3.0 http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc/3.0/ http://flossexperiences.wordpress.com EB80 462B 08E1 A0DE A73A 2C2F 9F3D C7A4 E1C4 D2D8 ___ Debconf-discuss mailing list Debconf-discuss@lists.debconf.org http://lists.debconf.org/mailman/listinfo/debconf-discuss
Re: [Debconf-discuss] US laptop ban and DebConf
Dear all, How are we to know if we are affected by the ban or not ? Most airlines, at least the low-cost ones I know don't have an e-mail id or even if they have, they don't reply. I have experienced it . I have tried the live chat option at some of the sites too and at times have found that what they say and what the airlines policy are different. Domestically, this has happened with me twice or thrice. I do not want myself or anybody else to be in a position where one is under the belief that the laptop ban does not affect them and while on the gate or the counter there they come to know that they will need to put it in checked bag. Apart from rough handling, the possibility of theft is also there in checked bags and especially if you have the same airlines with a layover, I would come to know only when in Montreal. The only choice would be not to take the flight. I do not see an easy way out except having a usb drive, have whatever content is needed and use a desktop/laptop in montreal which has been shared above by people. Just my 2 paise. -- Regards, Shirish Agarwal शिरीष अग्रवाल My quotes in this email licensed under CC 3.0 http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc/3.0/ http://flossexperiences.wordpress.com EB80 462B 08E1 A0DE A73A 2C2F 9F3D C7A4 E1C4 D2D8 ___ Debconf-discuss mailing list Debconf-discuss@lists.debconf.org http://lists.debconf.org/mailman/listinfo/debconf-discuss

And I still would like to leave some space for some trinkets and swag so it actually becomes over the prescribed limit. Last year was with Qatar and they gave a generous 30 kgs. but most airlines give 20 kgs. so it's a tight fit. As far as the other question which was asked as to what to do 'in case we buy the sleeping bags then what to do after' - I didn't say 'buy' but 'rent' but for the sake of argument let's say debian buys some x number of sleeping bags - a. From where we could buy - I have heard that there is/are something called Army Salvation Stores where people who are thrifty buy stuff. From what I have heard/read it usually is high-quality stuff, some of them may be hand-me-downs. From what I heard even hand-me-downs are washed thoroughly and could be used for few days. In either case, if people think that could be a good idea we could do that. Another idea could be to get some sleeping bag company to sponsor a few for us. If people could guide me, I could write to various Canadian manufacturers and sellers and see if we can get them to sponsor us with their sleeping bags. They could be our Associate Sponsor or something like that. b. Now as far as disposal of sleeping bags are concerned, some people could take with them (provided they have the space with them), we could give them to Red Cross, the Army Salvation Store, the refugees any of which groups would put them to good use. If we are able to rent them, then we just return them just like the heaters were returned. Hope the above answers the queries, failing that we could use the bunk beds just the way they are - just wear couple of more layers of clothes, might be a bit uncomfortable but it wouldn't be as bad as sleeping in the open at night. -- Regards, Shirish Agarwal शिरीष अग्रवाल My quotes in this email licensed under CC 3.0 http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc/3.0/ http://flossexperiences.wordpress.com EB80 462B 08E1 A0DE A73A 2C2F 9F3D C7A4 E1C4 D2D8 ___ Debconf-discuss mailing list Debconf-discuss@lists.debconf.org http://lists.debconf.org/mailman/listinfo/debconf-discuss
[Debconf-discuss] A wiki page for potential attendees to look at, window between registration and confirmation being short.
Hi all, Sorry @holger. Made beginnings of a wiki page https://wiki.debconf.org/wiki/Debconf17/Pre-Conference_Important_Dates Maybe the naming could be better . While pollo has shared that the dates needed would probably be known next week, made so that it's always available on the wiki. As a potential attendee, I would probably look for a page like this instead of hunting for information in the FAQ. Maybe after the dates are filled in, some of the first section content in the FAQ could be taken out ? As far the gap between registration and confirmation was shared on today's IRC meet, it was shared as 2 months . While that probably works great for non-paying public, for sponsored attendees, that window would probably be cutting it too fine. I have my own-one-off cases to share, illustrate - (2016) - SA 22 March 2016 - initial registration 11th May 2016 - Bursary granted 14th June 2016 - Visa issued by VFS (2015 ) - Germany 1 May 2015 - Initial Registration (know I did it late) 11th July 2015 - Some cancellations - Bursary granted Had to decline the same day as there was a difference of 200 Euros from last what I had seen. Also Debconf 15 was from 14th August 2015 anyways so would have been a tight squeeze even for the visa bit. While I understand that granting of bursaries is a sensitive and a dynamic topic and there are/were probably lot of factors which go into it. There were 581 applications for debconf 2015 that probably took a lot of time and energy for the minimum 3-person team to sift through all the data, do A > B comparisons and come with results they could justify to themselves as well as debconf-team. https://wiki.debconf.org/wiki/DebConf15/Statistics Similarly SA wouldn't have been an easy walk in the park either, as 282 people attended and from casual conversations it was something like 20-30 applications declined and some similar number of no-shows, so probably around 330-340 odd applications, unfortunately debconf16 final report doesn't mention the full number of applications received - https://wiki.debconf.org/wiki/DebConf16/FinalReport So, at least for sponsored people, have the window around 3 months to give breathing room both for attendees as well as the bursary team so they could do the necessary vetting that needs to be done from their side . I do have a feel that this year would again have a bumper number of applications as Canada has been named best place for tourism by CNN and Lonely Planet. While for a technical conference it shouldn't affect, from casual conversations, it does make a difference - http://edition.cnn.com/2017/01/06/travel/best-places-to-visit-in-2017/index.html https://www.lonelyplanet.com/best-in-travel Probably due to Canada celebrating it becoming 150 years this year. Visa registration (via VFS) will take a month if I apply today and this is lean period IIUC, so it would only become more as tourist season starts looming up. A sponsored attendee would only go for visa only after the bursary has been granted. Having enough time would be a plus (+) for both debconf as well a potential attendees. -- Regards, Shirish Agarwal शिरीष अग्रवाल My quotes in this email licensed under CC 3.0 http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc/3.0/ http://flossexperiences.wordpress.com EB80 462B 08E1 A0DE A73A 2C2F 9F3D C7A4 E1C4 D2D8 ___ Debconf-discuss mailing list Debconf-discuss@lists.debconf.org http://lists.debconf.org/mailman/listinfo/debconf-discuss

[Debconf-discuss] Debconf Open Festival 2017 , Questions and feedback
Dear all, Been thinking about this for a long long time so please bear. Last year while I personally enjoyed what was called the Open Day very much, I couldn't help feeling overwhelmed by activities around there. Even though when it was told/shared by someone that Open Day has watered down quite a bit from before. I couldn't help but wonder that when new people come for Debconf Open Day now Debconf Open Festival - a. How welcoming are we to them ? b. Do we have any numbers to know how many people came to Open Day ? c. Is there a way to get/generate feedback ? The above I have no idea about, maybe somebody could share more. d. How about a free walking tour ? d. This I could volunteer to be part of. Every couple hours or maybe once or twice, we gather whatever new people have come, show them around the stalls and make it more community-oriented. From my recent free talking tours in South Africa, have seen and experienced that most people chose to open up and talk to each other. If the above makes somewhat sense, then we could try this year. This wouldn't be much work unless the stalls are spread all over campus or something. Assuming whatever I experienced in debconf16 to hold true, it would all be in one space. e. There is/was talk of having computer games on Debconf Open Festival. Has anybody made a list of potential games that could be played ? Few games which come to my mind are - For e.g. I know there are mad Xonotians who do tournaments round the year http://forums.xonotic.org/forumdisplay.php?fid=9 See also http://xonotic.org/posts/2017/2016-by-the-numbers/ Then there is redeclipse http://redeclipse.net/ which we have - http://tracker.debian.org/redeclipse The problem and the opportunity with the above games are there are usually tens or hundreds of maps, mods etc. so the game experience would be fresh but would need somebody who has got the taste for it. Flightgear - http://www.flightgear.org/tours/the-saab-viggen/ - anybody needs a flight simulator - https://tracker.debian.org/pkg/flightgear simutrans - transportation simulator - https://tracker.debian.org/pkg/simutrans supertuxkart - 3D cart racing game - https://tracker.debian.org/pkg/supertuxkart There are many more - see https://wiki.debian.org/Games/Suggested Some of the ones I like on the list are - a. Stunt rally - https://stuntrally.tuxfamily.org/ b. Vdrift - https://github.com/VDrift/vdrift/ c. Vulture for nethack - http://www.darkarts.co.za/vulture-for-nethack Except for the RPG, most of the other games are/would be short games, at the most an hour or two. While I love RPG's maybe they might not be suitable for something like Debian Open Festival . [Debconf-discuss] Could/should we invite Tangent Animation and let them screen 'Run Ozzy Run' if they want to ?
Hi all, I have been thinking about Open Day in Canada. I saw this sometime back and thought maybe it might be a good fit https://code.blender.org/2016/11/blender-2-8-project-status/ Extract from the blog post - Tangent Animation, Canada (2+) This Toronto+Winnipeg based animation studio recently completed their first 100% Blender made feature film – Run Ozzy Run. They currently work on their second feature, a scifi story with robots. Tangent hired own developers to work on Blender and Cycles, and supports 1 year of two full time developers in Blender Institute to work on Blender Viewport. http://www.tangent-animation.ca/ The studio is/would be closer to us. If they agree to screen for us, it would be fun for young and old. It should also give an opportunity esp. for the young to know of a career option as well. They could do a small hour or so workshop which would be beneficial for debconf attendees as well . It might also be an opportunity to learn if Debian could in any way also enhance, make it better for blender workflows. What do people think ? Maybe somebody from the debconf local team could connect with them or if you want, I could send them a small mail asking if they would be interested to showcase their work in the conference (on behalf of debconf), lead a workshop and share with debconf attendees whatever troubles they had and see if Debian as a whole can help solve some of them. I could either CC debian-team or CC specific people for that purpose just in case they need some help with logistics or something. [Debconf-discuss] have made some bits for the day trip
Hi all, Have added some ideas about possible day trips at https://wiki.debconf.org/wiki/Debconf17/DayTrip Although early, gives more time for people to sort out things. It isn't comprehensive/exhaustive at all. In fact, there could be some interesting rail rides to nearby interesting places which unfortunately I'm not aware of. Somebody local would be able to share more. One thing I have to say, I did like the http://www.parcjeandrapeau.com/en/ site quite a lot . What is/was great to see this http://www.parcjeandrapeau.com/en/planning-development-project-ile-sainte-helene/ They actually tell the budget, have some sort of plan and also made the technical drawings available on-site for people to study, criticize and per-use. Probably not something I have seen my local municipality do :( Another thing I saw is that most sites and places insist about credit cards and not debit cards. I like debit cards as they offer much more control over expenses and have no interest costs whatsoever. -- Regards, Shirish Agarwal शिरीष अग्रवाल My quotes in this email licensed under CC 3.0 http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc/3.0/ http://flossexperiences.wordpress.com EB80 462B 08E1 A0DE A73A 2C2F 9F3D C7A4 E1C4 D2D8 ___ Debconf-discuss mailing list Debconf-discuss@lists.debconf.org http://lists.debconf.org/mailman/listinfo/debconf-discuss

There were two competing motives for asking these questions, sharing below. a. The media as well as the Government of the day has been bombarding the public as digital payments and digital economy will wipe out all evils, i.e. wipe out corruption (as apparently black money only generates in cash at least according to the Government of the day and popular media) , Terrorism and other aspects. While I have used digital payments, I have used it myself pretty reluctantly as whatever little I have seen leaves much to be desired. Because of the above, last few days I had been casually looking at banking and ecommerce sites as to how secure they are, just from the front page itself. For instance, out of the 10 biggest banks in India, while almost all have https, some haven't implemented hsts or forward secrecy or using just SHA1 instead of SHA2 , weak ciphers and range of other weaknesses. And this is when I am on a wired interface, And this is when I have less than fleeting understanding of security. Shudder to think what weaknesses and attack surfaces a black hat would have. I also had quite a few interesting conversations with couple of friends who work and have worked on security but as this conversation itself has been longish, hence would stop here. 2. The other is media has been painting Sweden, Canada and few more countries as role models for going cashless. Using the excuse of debconf I could ask people about the changes with some practical advise and also ask how and when the change occurred and how was the transition to a mostly digital economy (this i had forgotten to ask last time hence asking now). Was it something people did for their own convenience or something that was pushed by the Government of the day in any way ? See this notice by CBDT today - http://www.incometaxindia.gov.in/Lists/Press%20Releases/Attachments/571/Measures-Promoting-Digital-Payments-Creation-of-Less-Cash-Economy-19-12-2016.pdf . This was shared by our Finance Minister today. Does the public and Government of Canada believes that using digital payments does equate with less corruption, less terrorism and channelled into more productive use of the money. Ummm another thing is it ok with everybody if I use, quote your statements in a follow-up blog post. Look forward to hearing from you all. -- Regards, Shirish Agarwal शिरीष अग्रवाल My quotes in this email licensed under CC 3.0 http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc/3.0/ http://flossexperiences.wordpress.com EB80 462B 08E1 A0DE A73A 2C2F 9F3D C7A4 E1C4 D2D8 ___ Debconf-discuss mailing list Debconf-discuss@lists.debconf.org http://lists.debconf.org/mailman/listinfo/debconf-discuss
[Debconf-discuss] Discussion about debit card usage and money matters, perhaps part of the questions might be useful in the wiki as well.
Hi all, These are the questions I had asked of Canadians as debconf will be happening there (in the context of demonitization which took place in India) https://flossexperiences.wordpress.com/2016/12/18/demonetisation-indian-state-and-world/ The queries/questions are as under - 1. How much of Canada’s economy is cashless i.e used to Electronic Money Transfer and other means (but not cash) and how much is cash, more in day-to-day usage and transactions. I am trying to get people’s perspective rather than some website which may serve only raw numbers, although even that would be appreciable. 2. Also what, if any charges/commission are paid to a Canadian bank for paying via card/electronic money transfer. I ask as India has reduced charges overall to 1% from 2% for making transactions upto INR 2000 in a day. I am sure there are and would be forex conversion charges as well as charges from home bank (whose card you bought) but from my limited experience in South Africa, there were also differences in charges/commission used by other bank ATMs in the same precises. Any idea or possibility of knowing which is good. 3. There has also been recent talk of plastic notes instead of paper currency. Plastic notes are supposed to be more copy-proof and also will work for much longer time. They will not soil as paper notes do. How have countries been looking at Plastic currencies. I do suspect there would be issues while destroying plastic money vis-a-vis paper currencies. Look forward to reading if somebody has some observations to make. -- Regards, Shirish Agarwal शिरीष अग्रवाल My quotes in this email licensed under CC 3.0 http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc/3.0/ http://flossexperiences.wordpress.com EB80 462B 08E1 A0DE A73A 2C2F 9F3D C7A4 E1C4 D2D8 ___ Debconf-discuss mailing list Debconf-discuss@lists.debconf.org http://lists.debconf.org/mailman/listinfo/debconf-discuss

Also I'm not a programmer but am blessed to have few web programmers as friends who may be able to help. I have few questions, the answer to which might lead to creation of some psuedo/sample code which then could be probably integrated into the debconf flow . a. How is the welcome message triggered, is it triggered via mail or some button as in a yes/no button by the user ? I am asking about the backend, not what is visible to the user. The last step when that message gets fired in response should also fire the badge too and the badge should be attached to the message We probably wouldn't even need a database as the numbers are small, less than 1000. b. Is there a numbering scheme that we could use as a basis, should we use . One idea is to use something like 'ddmmyyincrementnumber. If that is good/ok then we would use that as a basis. c. Should we also use gnu-barcode to change those numbers into barcode or use qrcodes as those fonts are also available. If we get the above details, I could discuss and have something on github soonish Let me know what you think ? -- Regards, Shirish Agarwal शिरीष अग्रवाल My quotes in this email licensed under CC 3.0 http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc/3.0/ http://flossexperiences.wordpress.com EB80 462B 08E1 A0DE A73A 2C2F 9F3D C7A4 E1C4 D2D8 -- Regards, Shirish Agarwal शिरीष अग्रवाल My quotes in this email licensed under CC 3.0 http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc/3.0/ http://flossexperiences.wordpress.com EB80 462B 08E1 A0DE A73A 2C2F 9F3D C7A4 E1C4 D2D8 ___ Debconf-discuss mailing list Debconf-discuss@lists.debconf.org http://lists.debconf.org/mailman/listinfo/debconf-discuss
[Debconf-discuss] personal debian badges to use on our website ?
Dear all, From the last debconf I really like the badges that were made From debconf16 experience this is how things work/ed for me - a. Debconf registration opens (this year it was good 4 months in advance, 19th March 2016) b. Complete registration c. Get confirmation email that registration was successful d. Here it gets a bit murkier - d1. I had to buy airline tickets for visa (came to know about refundable deposits) way later, so it was a bit of gamble for me. Luckily came to know that the airline I booked (Qatar Airways) refunds money in case of visa refusal. d2. Needed a modified visa letter with more details than the standard one given by Debian e. Go to the visa people (vfsglobal in my case) pay the visa fees and simply wait. e1. Also apply for transit visa (which I didn't need to because Doha Al Hamad doesn't need a transit visa from Indians) otherwise another loop here itself. f. Get visa with some wrong information - probably exception here. g. Get it fixed by sending a letter to the Embassy clarifying what was wrong. h. Get the final fixed visa (28th May) i. Give final registration go-ahead (this tells Debian orga that you are really coming) j. Travel and attend debconf . Now I had been thinking that at I. could we give personalized digital badges to attendees to use and decorate it on their blog/website, a sort of official recognition that they are going to Debconf. I am thinking of https://wiki.debconf.org/wiki/DebConf16/Artwork going down to where the badges are - I tried to edit so that the artwork would generate a TOC, saw that there is _NOTOC_ and saw in the revision history that Valessio had generated the page with _NOTOC_ . Probably a valid reason for that hence left it alone. Few reasons why it may be a good idea - a. Such personalized badges are and would be fun and it could be used to decorate your website/blog with the personal touch. It shows you had gone or are going. b. I remember some people asking for certificate of attendance of the Conference. While some people may still ask for it, most would be happy with digital badges. c. People could decorate with number of badges so number of years they went can be easily seen, this publicizes the user/attendee's affliation with Debian and vice-versa. The only downside I see would be - People who are rejected years down the line due to some bad behaviour could use the badges to ill-repute Debian. How it would work - a. Have a script automatically incrementing the number when the final go-ahead is received form the attendee. b. If we wanna be fancy, we could use GNU barcode [$] aptitude show barcode | grep Description Description: Utility and library for barcode generation c. Have the Debconf that year badge as the background for the digital badge. What do people think of it ? -- Regards, Shirish Agarwal शिरीष अग्रवाल My quotes in this email licensed under CC 3.0 http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc/3.0/ http://flossexperiences.wordpress.com EB80 462B 08E1 A0DE A73A 2C2F 9F3D C7A4 E1C4 D2D8 ___ Debconf-discuss mailing list Debconf-discuss@lists.debconf.org http://lists.debconf.org/mailman/listinfo/debconf-discuss

Are you saying that "random" people send requests straight to visa@d.o. or are you saying that people register without knowing or having a stake in how/what happens to free software . If you are talking about the latter i.e. "random registrations" , that is completely understandable and believable as well. I don't think that part can be automated in any way. All and any tricky questions could be easily defeated by a good hacker/slacker who is able to frame good search-engine queries and get away with it Deserving people/candidates who might not have the best web skills but have the passion may be left behind, so current methods seem the only way. > Additionally, on past we started the process in the web-interface and > continued via email (for special needs, etc.), but it has show that it > doesn’t work and it cause too much extra work on organisation side. Actually I have been partly at fault (not being able to reply to few emails) but this was completely due to Google's inability to distinguish between genuine and spam mails especially after doing filters. The situation with most free webmail providers is similar from what I experienced and have had exchanges with other people. Many people may not want to disclose/use company affiliated mail addresses for any number and hence use webmail id's as well. > I would assume that for @visa it is the same. [Debconf-discuss] suggestion to add visa details needed in the web-form itself
Dear all, I am not a programmer, just a user. I was going through the pain points and suggestions I had given (either publicly or/and privately) to improve debconf flow, maybe part of it could be implemented the upcoming year. While it was too late then to improve the existing process, we probably have enough time to improve part of the web form for 2017 - The only details required are - a. Name of the prospective attendee - b. Passport Number - c. Address - I do not have access to the webform now/atm, IIRC there was some validation to make sure the form was not incomplete . I guess that bit would be needed here. One of the reasons Maybe it was not adopted is need of increased privacy in sense of passport details being shared with as few people as possible. While I have no idea how things happen at the backend, maybe something similar to http://stackoverflow.com/questions/16130619/sending-parts-of-form-using-jquery-serialize-and-ajax could be used to send part of the form who are looking at the visa part while the rest of the team looks at other part of the webform. While that code is used to cut the form and serialize it for transmission, probably it could be used to send to different e-mail id as well. I can ask couple of my friends to come up with some sample/psuedo code which could be used/integrated provided we are given some details of how things work. -- Regards, Shirish Agarwal शिरीष अग्रवाल My quotes in this email licensed under CC 3.0 http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc/3.0/ http://flossexperiences.wordpress.com EB80 462B 08E1 A0DE A73A 2C2F 9F3D C7A4 E1C4 D2D8 ___ Debconf-discuss mailing list Debconf-discuss@lists.debconf.org http://lists.debconf.org/mailman/listinfo/debconf-discuss

You are looking for sponsored accommodation for Debcamp and Debconf both? b. You are looking for confirmation now. While I cannot comment on behalf of the debconf-team, from what little I experienced, I *think* you have jumped the gun a little too early. I was a participant both in Debcamp and Debconf 16. I had a brief look at the archives and registration for the conference opened on 19th March 2016 which was 3 months and couple of days before debcamp started. I don't think they would be able to open registrations until and unless they have talked to all the potential sponsors, have a budget, talked to caterers with budgets, talked for rooms around campus and hotel etc. all of which can be done by the Canadian team only. Only after doing all that and getting the numbers checked twice, thrice would they be in a position to know how many people they would be able to sponsor in various ways. So I would urge you to hold on to a bit, let them do their thing, they will announce registration on the mailing list with a link to a webform which you can fill and apply. And then wait for them to take a call and get back to you. Hopefully the above has clarified the process/procedure. [Debconf-discuss] Cape Town, Eastern Food Bazaar and Open Access
Hi all, Are there any debconf-stragglers who are still residing in Cape Town. If yes, there is a smallish favor I have to ask of you. If any of you in the next few days, were to go near/around Longmarket Street there is a place called Eastern Food Bazaar http://www.openstreetmap.org/node/4218894207 https://www.google.com/maps/@-33.9246356,18.422202,21z If you can, could you please take a snap of the hoarding of the Eastern Food Bazaar. It is a confluence place as you have Indian, Lebanese, Halal and couple of other cuisines which make it a cool joint. Apart from that, they have heavy portions, I was not able to finish even one of them. Then, if you are in the vicinity of the Bazaar, the restaurant, just couple of steps going towards the observatory there is a grate/manhole/inspection cover by the name of 'Open Access' with logo of Open Access. I also did see that there is a van with the same name and access which I'm sharing as well but it didn't come out well :( This bit is a bit more important as we in India want to have something similar and has been talked to death in India but no movement has happened on the ground. If it's not possible, even if somebody could get me the correct URL for the open access utility network provider. I could ask the Open Access people themselves and they could send me a pictures/photographs of the same and maybe answer couple of questions as well. At the very least, it would be an interesting topic to explore alongside Debconf16 . Many thanks for the Debconf team for making it a memorable event. -- Regards, Shirish Agarwal शिरीष अग्रवाल My quotes in this email licensed under CC 3.0 http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc/3.0/ http://flossexperiences.wordpress.com EB80 462B 08E1 A0DE A73A 2C2F 9F3D C7A4 E1C4 D2D8 ___ Debconf-discuss mailing list Debconf-discuss@lists.debconf.org http://lists.debconf.org/mailman/listinfo/debconf-discuss
[Debconf-discuss] where to upload presentation slides for talks given ?
Hi all, I gave an on-the-fly presentation in the recent debconf held at Debconf, Cape Town, South Africa. I got some feedback stating that for some people (especially non-native english speakers) it isn't/wasn't easy to piece the story I am/was sharing at that time. http://meetings-archive.debian.net/pub/debian-meetings/2016/debconf16/My_Experience_with_Debian.webm Hence for better understanding/accessibility have decided to make a presentation which gets the facts right. [Debconf-discuss] trying to figure out vodacom prepaid plans and woolworth's at CPT airport .
Hi all, I tried to figure out vodacom prepaid plans ( I didn't register) just to have an overview of what sort of charges could I expect to pay. I went to http://www.vodacom.co.za/vodacom/shopping/plans/plans?planType=Airtime%20plan=Prepaid and from details of the voice-only plans it seems the per minute billing is between R1.50 to R2.00 but couldn't find any deals for prepaid. People who are coming through CPT Airport and going to Woolsworth's could you share your experiences ? What prepaid deals (voice or/and data) were being offered by the shopkeeper there ? [Debconf-discuss] ways to send money to self if any travel bursary reimbursements at end is done through cash (ZAR) .
Hi all, While I do not know how the travel bursary reimbursements will be done at the end of the conference, either through cash (like last year) and if I do not want to carry such a large amount as cash, can anybody tell/share what options there are to send money to self or home cheaply and legally ? I am looking at western union but any other option which does direct money transfer between the two countries ( South Africa and India) are also welcome. Banks are also supposed to be one option but there fees are on the higher side vis-a-vis westerm Union/Paypal and there also seems to be conditions as to how much you can send in one go. Does it make sense to have a westerm union account for such a purpose ? I do know that like last year, there is possibility for doing online transfers after some time which is the last option if nothing of the above works/doesn't make sense. -- Regards, Shirish Agarwal शिरीष अग्रवाल My quotes in this email licensed under CC 3.0 http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc/3.0/ http://flossexperiences.wordpress.com EB80 462B 08E1 A0DE A73A 2C2F 9F3D C7A4 E1C4 D2D8 ___ Debconf-discuss mailing list Debconf-discuss@lists.debconf.org http://lists.debconf.org/mailman/listinfo/debconf-discuss

Re: [Debconf-discuss] Last call for keys for keysigning in Cape Town, South Africa
Hi all, I have a query - While I understand the web of trust which is one of the major parts of keysigning and the process is detailed at https://www.debian.org/events/keysigning . Where it fails me is that WoT has little or no value to a person who doesn't want or have any uploading rights to the debian archive. The only argument given for WoT for non-technical peopel is the case where you need to prove your electronic identity to another entity who's also unknown but you need to prove your identity as Jacob Appelbaum is shown doing in citizenfour but such instances are pretty rare. Is there any other compelling reason for non-technical, contributors having no upload rights to use WoT , apart from being part of an awesome developer's key ? -- Regards, Shirish Agarwal शिरीष अग्रवाल My quotes in this email licensed under CC 3.0 http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc/3.0/ http://flossexperiences.wordpress.com EB80 462B 08E1 A0DE A73A 2C2F 9F3D C7A4 E1C4 D2D8 ___ Debconf-discuss mailing list Debconf-discuss@lists.debconf.org http://lists.debconf.org/mailman/listinfo/debconf-discuss
[Debconf-discuss] chip-and-pin ATM cards at South Africa ATMS
Hi all, Few weeks back, I had applied for international debit card. Soon I got one. Reading the literature which came with the card, came to know that the card works on magnetic strip technology when used domestically and uses chip-and-pin or Online Debit System as shared in https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Debit_card Now I don't know about South Africa, but in India there are still a majority of ATM's who only use the magnetic strip for authentication purposes and haven't moved on to the more supposedly secure system of chip-and-pin/Online Debit System as is supposedly the case in Europe and States. [Debconf-discuss] clothes, dress code for debconf
Hi all, I have made a link for clothing in debconf in logistics. I tried to figure out if there was something in either the debconf-discuss or debconf-team archives but was only able to dig out past threads, nothing about the current event. And I don't want to blindly re-use the instructions which were there in some other event as local culture and people who are hosting us would probably be better to guide us. Can somebody share some guidelines for debconf. I know it is and can be a touchy subject as clothes are pretty much a combination of personal styles and the culture where we come from. But if there any guidelines, would be good to know and share. For Indians, for example I can share that it probably would be a good idea to have either thick cotton t-shirts just to make sure that you don't get cold. Have no idea about t-shirts, three-fourths, shorts, tank tops, trousers and all the different clothes which make a person unique. Incidentally, since the terrorist attacks have happened over a decade and more, air travel has only gone up, see http://www.statista.com/statistics/193533/growth-of-global-air-traffic-passenger-demand/ which means that apart from economic situations like the 2008-2009, people are traveling more for business or leisure, not less and unless some sort of real situation develops, we just have to trust ourselves, the systems that are in-place and just hope that things happen for the best. AFAIK there is no system or country that is fail-safe and nobody can give any such guarantees anymore, so yes, be aware of things around you but don't give into irrational fears. There is also the short-lived debian-mobile mailing list https://lists.debian.org/debian-mobile/ after which I think a decision was made to put more efforts on getting android bits in Debian main, probably because most upstream may not be active. Even if we can have a showcase of Android variants like Replicant and f-droid and conversations around them, that might get some interest going and I'm sure most DD's would have one or the other device which has them. The same would be of most GNU/Linux groups as well. If we are able to get some tablets hands-on even those will be good. Incidentally, I'm planning to buy a new phone (around $100 - $125) budget, so any recommendations to look at which is/could be ported to Debian would be good to know. @Jonas - recommendations ? -- Regards, Shirish Agarwal शिरीष अग्रवाल My quotes in this email licensed under CC 3.0 http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc/3.0/ http://flossexperiences.wordpress.com EB80 462B 08E1 A0DE A73A 2C2F 9F3D C7A4 E1C4 D2D8 ___ Debconf-discuss mailing list Debconf-discuss@lists.debconf.org http://lists.debconf.org/mailman/listinfo/debconf-discuss
[Debconf-discuss] hardware which runs Debian or a blend or a sub-set, debian blends, gaming on open day/week-end.
Hi all, Warning - Would be slightly longish mail. Apologies for noise. Maybe it's too late in the day but for quite sometime I had been thinking/dreaming if we could have/show-cased Debian running on various hardware doing different things, unusual things . While Debian on the desktop, workstation and server and Debian on ARM is somewhat known there are and would probably be some unusual devices where Debian or a sub-set/blend is used. For instance, Debian-Edu would be a good candidate to share and showcase as well as Debian Med and other such blends which run/use specific hardware which ties in debian, for instance the galileo package which just entered Debian archive just today which works with 'fitbit' devices (have no idea what they are.). There would also be quite some equipment which probably is integrated or in process of being integrated/reverse-engineered which people would love to see. IIRC, even HP one of the main sponsors of debconf, is/was bringing out 'The Machine' although later we don't know what is happening to it, http://www.extremetech.com/extreme/207897-hp-kills-the-machine-repurposes-design-around-conventional-technologies One of the DD's was working with HP 'The Machine' project. I also remember that some VR packages were made for Debian (and are the archive I *think*) , it would be good/nice if are able to try out HP's backpack for VR http://www.in.techradar.com/news/gaming/HP-and-MSIs-backpacks-put-a-new-spin-on-VR/articleshow/52467485.cms and see what can be worked within the Debian universe. Similarly as there would be kids (as well as big kids/adults) who might like to blow off steam once in a while, we could have few systems where we have games like 0ad or/and vdrift, supertuxkart among others who could get some potential new users while having good PR for Debian too. The only downside I see here is that we would need slightly large number of volunteers than some of the other choices that indiebio has outlined. https://wiki.debconf.org/wiki/DebConf16/DebianDay What do people think/make of above ? -- Regards, Shirish Agarwal शिरीष अग्रवाल My quotes in this email licensed under CC 3.0 http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc/3.0/ http://flossexperiences.wordpress.com EB80 462B 08E1 A0DE A73A 2C2F 9F3D C7A4 E1C4 D2D8 ___ Debconf-discuss mailing list Debconf-discuss@lists.debconf.org http://lists.debconf.org/mailman/listinfo/debconf-discuss
[Debconf-discuss] suggestions for getting extension to visa - e-mail address of south africa consulate, mumbai.
Dear all, A bit longish mail, sorry about that. After lot of legwork, finally got a visa but not of the dates that I wanted. As can be seen from my arrival and departure dates, I'll be in Cape Town for almost 17 days but the visa I got is only of 10 days. For last couple of days, I have been trying to get across to the South African Consulate but without any success. The number - + 91 22 2351 3725 exists but nobody attends it. At the most I'm able to get to the switchboard but it doesn't get connected to the visa personnel inside the consulate. The time for enquiry is only one hour from 1400 to 1500 hrs IST where nobody picks up the phone, at least that's my observation after trying for 2 days. There is no e-mail address for the South African Consulate in Mumbai, the e-mail address sacgmum...@saconsulate.in is useless/dead. Doing a simple whois on the domain shows it's no longer there (not found). I am non-plussed how to approach the consulate. The South African consulate in Mumbai, India seems to have out-sourced all its work to vfsglobal http://www.vfsglobal.com/southafrica/india/ Now how do I approach the consulate as there doesn't seem to be a way out. I tried connecting the Delhi Consular Office with the same results. Even there the e-mail addresses are either dormant or not working and anyways Mumbai is far nearer than Delhi. One option is that I send a registered post asking for the e-mail address of the Mumbai consular office. Another option is to go to mumbai and try to see if I can somehow force their hand to share their contact details or/and have some sort of appointment where I can show all my documents although what I heard from the third-party (vfs) they are not approachable unless you contact them one way or the other before making the trip. They refused to co-operate/give the e-mail address or any Consular officer's number so I could approach them directly. The whole thing is opaque. I am in a bit of quagmire also on the flight . I have no idea if Qatar Airways (the airlines I'm flying with) will make an exception and just change the file tickets of coming back. Mostly I may have to cancel my tickets and buy new tickets which would be horrendously expensive (also both tickets are non-refundable in nature) to do both the things. Could people suggest a way out ? I did see few cover letters for the same - http://www.careerride.com/view.aspx?Id=11416 Looking for the way forward. -- Regards, Shirish Agarwal शिरीष अग्रवाल My quotes in this email licensed under CC 3.0 http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc/3.0/ http://flossexperiences.wordpress.com EB80 462B 08E1 A0DE A73A 2C2F 9F3D C7A4 E1C4 D2D8 ___ Debconf-discuss mailing list Debconf-discuss@lists.debconf.org http://lists.debconf.org/mailman/listinfo/debconf-discuss
[Debconf-discuss] Is travel sponsorship equated to remuneration for visa purposes - in South Africa ?
Dear all, I'll be traveling to South Africa for an open-source conference (debconf) for which I'll get my flight-tickets reimbursed at the end of the conference. Could/Would this reimbursement be in anyway equated to remuneration ? http://www.vfsglobal.com/southafrica/india/conference_visaapplication.html Common-sense/logic says that should not be so, as remuneration is for doing some $work but in this case I would just be an attendee. I will be doing some volunteering but that is not tied in anyways with the travel sponsorship that I'll receive at the end of the conference. I had put it up at http://travel.stackexchange.com/questions/68668/is-travel-sponsorship-equated-to-remuneration-for-visa-purposes ( know it's not a free platform) but haven't got any satisfactory answers. Maybe somebody more experienced in these matters could share their experience and opinion. I could keep quiet about it, i.e. there but I would like to keep things above board as much as possible. Look forward to know how to approach the above. -- Regards, Shirish Agarwal शिरीष अग्रवाल My quotes in this email licensed under CC 3.0 http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc/3.0/ http://flossexperiences.wordpress.com EB80 462B 08E1 A0DE A73A 2C2F 9F3D C7A4 E1C4 D2D8 ___ Debconf-discuss mailing list Debconf-discuss@lists.debconf.org http://lists.debconf.org/mailman/listinfo/debconf-discuss
Re: [Debconf-discuss] [Debconf-announce] This year's Cheese & Wine party
Hi all, As a potential attendee, I had talked with Gunnar (off-list) on the possibility of Indian cooking. I had also involved Bernelle as I thought s/he would probably know about sourcing Indian spices but as most Indians live in Durban it seems it would be difficult to source those spices. Cape town to Durban is 1646 km which is quite a bit. Thankful to Nicholas for sharing list of what could be imported into South Africa http://www.nda.agric.za/vetweb/ImportExport/Application%20forms/Application%20to%20import%20dairy%20products.doc But that doesn't tell if airlines allow spices to be carried in (probably not for security purposes, at least logic dictates/tells that but could somebody clarify it ? ) Basic spices and ingredients that are part/soul of most vegetarian food :- rai or mustard seeds, zeera or cumin seeds. spices such as black pepper, turmeric, red chilli powder (kashmiri chilli) - sharing a brand below http://www.bigbasket.com/pd/269285/everest-powder-kashmirilal-ground-chilly-100-gm-carton/ , iodized salt and lastly garam masala which is combination of many spices but is separate. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Garam_masala My queries are the following :- 1. Are spices prohibited/can airlines confiscate them ( most are in powder form) ? 2. Most of the cooking I have done is on kadai which are quite common here :- http://www.bigbasket.com/pd/40041655/meet-hard-anodized-kadai-with-lid-black-hdkl-14-1-pc/ Is something similar available in SA ? 3. Perhaps the most important of all - how big are these wine and cheese parties, I have cooked for 4-5 people at the most, there were couple of times where I did cooking for 100 odd people but I had amazing help and they were able to get the scale of spices from 4-5 people to 100 (not my forte) 4. Lastly, most of the cooking I have done is on gas which I don't know would be available or not. Look forward to know about above. -- Regards, Shirish Agarwal शिरीष अग्रवाल My quotes in this email licensed under CC 3.0 http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc/3.0/ http://flossexperiences.wordpress.com EB80 462B 08E1 A0DE A73A 2C2F 9F3D C7A4 E1C4 D2D8 ___ Debconf-discuss mailing list Debconf-discuss@lists.debconf.org http://lists.debconf.org/mailman/listinfo/debconf-discuss

Hi all, This probably would be more pertinent as Debian boobs/newbies are expected to show up for that day. Like me, there probably would be lot of people interested in what happens in debian-project, how is the roadmap decided and how different priories and conflicts are resolved. > Another thought might be some sort of panel discussion with some of us > crazy-long-timer Debian folks answering questions? [Debconf-discuss] Money matters and air travel queries - 1 -2 stops and being in South Africa morning or afternoon.
Hi all, I made a page with my conversations with Bernelle (sometime ago) which clears the air somewhat for a prospective traveler coming to South Africa to not just be for the conference but also have a bit of holiday with/on her/im and expenses s/he can expect . https://wiki.debconf.org/wiki/DebConf16/Money This probably needs to be linked to somewhere in Logistics but probably needs to be cleaned and any duplication or moving around may be needed. Feel free to do the same. Now for flights I recently saw " The Truth About Cheap Flights: Channel 4 Dispatches " http://www.channel4.com/info/press/news/the-truth-about-cheap-flights-channel-4-dispatches While this is more about UK and a specific company in UK, I *think* it is similar everywhere and especially in India. I know same/similar practices which are in vogue in the Railways, esp. in Second Class reservation (the cheapest way and yet decent way for most people to move around to large distances > 500 km. for sure), so would try to also shop around for the cheapest and yet comfortable air travel. Now I have budgeted at $837 which is around around one and a half times the cheapest ticket available $587 . Here's a link to the on-line listing - http://cheapfaresindia.makemytrip.com/international/raw/index.html?l=exIndia=RT=PNQ-CPT-D-29Jun2016_CPT-PNQ-D-11Jul2016=A-1=E=MA=80411462463532449#/listing https://www.ixigo.com/search/result/flight/BOM/CPT/29062016/11072016/1/0/0/e - far better listing especially for information on layovers (which is critical) is much more easily known. Have attached some of the flights which look good/promising but as there are so many bewildering choices and have no idea which air route is ideal, hence asking air travelers if they have any tips or ideas for the same. My idea is to land in South Africa on 30th morning or evening, decompress and just be on 1st of July and be available to be part of debian for noobs. The cheapest flight on makemy trip is at $629 doesn't work because both while going as well as coming, there are stops where connection between flights is around half an hour, so if the flight is late for some reason or some other issue, it is very easy to miss the connection. I have been trying multiple options on both the sites but either the layovers are too short (between 30 mins to 2 hours) or too long (15 -24 hours) There are couple of Airports I want/am looking for information on :- a. I was looking at Johannesburg International Airport as a potential layover stop but after reading https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/O._R._Tambo_International_Airport decided to give it a miss as it seems to be a pretty busy airport and the layovers I was getting were between 1 - 2 hours which isn't enough in a busy and big airport. I would be having check-in baggage along with hand-baggage (lappy :) ) . So this doesn't seem to be a right fit. b. The other most common layover is Addis Ababa Bole International Airport of Ethopia https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Addis_Ababa_Bole_International_Airport This airport also seems to have grown a bit as per the wiki article . It is really nuts as there are so many combinations and flights, it makes my head spin, can anyone help ? Have checked around 140 odd flights, direct would have been lot better and simpler to understand. Ideally, I would like just 1 stop between the two countries and have a layover of around 4 hours just in case of delay either at takeoff, bad weather, landing, baggage collection etc. Think 4 hours should be the sweet spot, if people think there should be more of a gap, please chime here. It would be nicer if one of the cheaper flights makes the cut so somebody else or it could be used to make debconf more awesome. In case of a long layover, for budget/economy travelers are there any budget choices for storage lockers and having bit of sleep, food and freshening up before the next leg of the journey. Look forward to learn. -- Regards, Shirish Agarwal शिरीष अग्रवाल My quotes in this email licensed under CC 3.0 http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc/3.0/ http://flossexperiences.wordpress.com EB80 462B 08E1 A0DE A73A 2C2F 9F3D C7A4 E1C4 D2D8 https://www.ixigo.com/search/result/flight/BOM/CPT/29062016/11072016/1/0/0/e 1.
