Bug#249119: netcfg: A way to mark templates as unused would be nice
Package: netcfg Severity: wishlist Sometimes I wish to remove a template from my master templates file because it is no longer used or currently has no purpose. If I reconsider and add it back, this is no problem if the template is not translated at all. However, especially in the case of d-i, I do not want to lose the myriad translations that have been made to a given template, yet it is important to not have excess unused templates in udebs where space is at a premium. Therefore a method of marking templates as disabled or unused so that they are not included in the compiled templates file would allow one to save translations instead of having to delete them. This then saves space in the compiled deb. The flip side is that this probably would allow for a lot of bitrot to occur in source packages. -- Joshua Kwan signature.asc Description: Digital signature

So unless translators or maintainers delete those commented translations manually (or via an evil tool), they will be back automatically if strings are added again. This worked fine, and the partitioner showed the partition arrangement as it should. When I then went to each LV, and went to mount them, the partitioner said that no filesystem was detected on the LV, and only gave me the choice of formatting it, not leaving it as it was and mounting it. Now I've found another problem about the generated fstab: it isn't ordered correctly. In particular at installation time I choose to have a partition for /home and two other for /home/students and /home/staff (I'm doing this installation for a school). The resulting fstab had the second two before /home itself, thus causing mount to complain that their mount moint was non-existent and actually not mounting them. This may depend on the fact that /home resides on the second raid disc provided by the controller (/dev/cciss/c0d1) while the other two reside on the first one (/dev/cciss/c0d0) (or, at installation time /dev/cciss/disc1 and /dev/cciss/disc0) Anyway the installer component that generates the fstab should take care that the order respects the filesystem hierarchy, before anything else! Re: call for help: quik- (oldworld ppc) installer (d-i skills needed, not powerpc)
Hi, btw, isn't mkvmlinux (http://packages.debian.org/unstable/devel/mkvmlinuz) suitable to create boot floppies for oldworld ?! (I currently don't have a monitor for my oldworld mac but I'll get one until the weekend.) I'm in a similar situation and will try it soon; I only heard about mkvmlinuz today. Has anybody tried now ? ;) d-i installer installs quik just fine, and quik (at least for my powermac 4400/200) creates a good quik.conf, except for the refered link to /boot/vmlinux. /boot/vmlinux-2.4.25-powerpc-small exists, but the link to /boot/vmlinux is missing. I think this is a bug in kernel-image-powerpc-small. No, we can fix this in rootskel, and we need to fix it anyway for yaboot (see a couple of merged bugs against yaboot-installer). I've got the change in my working copy, and it just needs testing. Could you please point me to the exact location in rootskel's code? I just had a brief look at the contents of rootskel_0.75.tar.gz but couldn't find it. if someone would be willing to help start with a quik-installer I would happily help that person and (co-)maintain it and collect open firmware settings for specific mac models. I'll try to check in what I've got over the weekend, unfinished and untested though it is. That's great! Until then I'll examine the build at http://people.debian.org/~luther/debian-installer/daily-powerpc-built/2004.05.15/powerpc-small/floppy/ and post the results. regards, Holger -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Re: propigating udebs to testing for the next release
So, I've a question. I want to commit a change to base-installer which will allow root partitions to be on LVM. However, this requires initrd-tools 0.1.68 which was accepted today (and will break LVM installations with an older initrd-tools). If I make the base-installer change now, this means this version cannot move to testing. I guess I could wait 10 days to commit that change, but that would slow down development quite a few. I suppose I can commit it in 5 days, because we said udebs need to be in unstable for 5 days before we consider moving them to testing. Is this the right thing to do? -- Martin Michlmayr [EMAIL PROTECTED] -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Bug#249049: INSTALL REPORT
The grub-installer is quite confused about hdc being the first BIOS disk, but that is to be expected I guess. I don't think having hc as the first disk is that uncommon, so we should try to make this work. What problems did you encounter exactly? Onboard PATA controller: Primary master == hda: Maxtor 4D080H4, ATA DISK drive Primary slave == hdb: JLMS XJ-HD166S, ATAPI CD/DVD-ROM drive Secondary master == hdc: Maxtor 6Y120L0, ATA DISK drive The disk on SM is set to boot in BIOS. If I answer the install in MBR question with a yes, it executes grub-install (hd0) -- the boot sector lands on the wrong disk. If I chose no, and chose (hd1) I get a grub prompt, but the root disk is set to (hd1,1), where there isn't even a partition. Easily fixed by editing menu.list, but ... grub-install can use device nodes as arguments, so the default call could be: grub-install /dev/??? (node of disk on which /boot resides) and the 'root' entry in menu list set to (hd0,?). ? being the partition numer of the partition that has /boot That way the boot sector should land on the right disk, and grubs 'root' entry, since (hd0) at boot-time seems to be the disk that was booted from in all cases. Or not? Cheers C -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Re: propigating udebs to testing for the next release
Martin Michlmayr wrote: So, I've a question. Even if you wait 5 days, we would then have broken LVM installs for 5 more days until the new initrd-tools reaches testing, and the base-installer change would not get tested at all in that time period (unless someone installed unstable with d-i), defeating the 5 day delay. I think the thing to do in this case is to wait for the new initrd-tools to go in before changing base-installer. You could try to get that expedited. If the change in base-installer is small and well confined to LVM systems, then we could let it in in less than 5 days after initrd-tools goes in. Would it be possible to make it use the new initrd-tools iff it's available and continue to work with the old one? -- see shy jo signature.asc Description: Digital signature

I thought you said udebs have to be in unstable for at least days before we consider moving them to testing. The debian-installer was scanning /dev/hda3 which contained directory names with underscores and umlauts (created by the German WinXP installation). Onse I removed these directories (presumably I could have also renamed them), the installation from the usb-stick proceed nicely. Hopefully the installer can be modified in a way that directory names with unusual characters are not a problem any further. Thank you very much. KMail nastiness in binary package with Sarge
There is a serious bug in KMail which comes with Debian Sarge which causes the loss of mail (all mail is just deleted for some reason). The version of KMail affected is 1.6.2. * [EMAIL PROTECTED] [EMAIL PROTECTED] [2004-05-12 21:00]: I have 2 network cards and nether can get an address using the default 2.4 kernel, though gnoppix 0.6.0 RC1 seems to have no problem, which uses the 2.4.24 kernel. Strange. Your card uses the natsemi module, right? Can you open a shell on the 2nd virtual terminal (alt-F2), and a) check if this module has been loaded (look at /proc/modules) and b) and if not load it by hand (modprobe natsemi). Does that help? I tried that out, and the modulas for both cards were loaded. I ran dhclient eth0 from the command line to see if I could get anymore information, the only error message I got was dhclient-script: 99: sleep: not found It acted like it was trying to get address... I tried a static ip as well, but that didn't work ether, which suggest to me that the modual is not working right. I had this problem with the eailyer version of the install, but I gave up. I checked the integraty of the cd and it failed! But tht happened with the earilyer version as well. Does the intergraty checker work? The md5sum for the iso checks out ok. I really like what you guys are doing with the installer, so if there is anything more I can do to help, let me know. My partition table is like this: #9 bootstrap #10 /boot #11 swap #12 / vmlinux is on 12, pointing to the powerpc image on 10. yaboot.conf seems fine, but when I tried to run ybin from /target I wasn't clever enough to work out all the paths etc. I've updated yaboot-installer, version 0.0.21, to cope with kernel symlinks in /boot. There still needs to be a change in rootskel to actually set the symlink in /boot rather than /; I've checked this into trunk, but haven't uploaded it yet. Re: New languagechooser
Quoting Denis Barbier ([EMAIL PROTECTED]): BTW how will the @euro modifier be added for EU countries? Note also that el_GR.UTF-8 id the preferred locale for Greek. Well, the default locale is, imho, up to translators and to be set in languagechooser/languagelist. For languages which have only one country in SUPPORTED, this is fairly easy. Partman doesn't recognize it as a bootstrap partition but as ext2 and yaboot-installer failed saying that no bootstrap partition was found. Installation failed here. I can continue the installation of base system but no way to boot debian after. I believe I've finally found out what's wrong with this, after reproducing it once again myself: parted doesn't report hfs unless you actually create an hfs filesystem there; we don't have hfsutils-udeb, and don't really want to create a filesystem there anyway since mkofboot does it later. I also believe I know the necessary fix, finally: I'll have partman-newworld stuff the list of boot partitions into a debconf template which yaboot-installer can then just fetch. Bug#244959: should not pass the kernel environment to d-i
On Tue, Apr 20, 2004 at 04:32:57PM -0400, Joey Hess wrote: Package: rootskel Severity: normal Tags: d-i In bug #243011, one of the problems turned out to be because a script tested for $initrd, without always setting it, and $initrd is set in the environment from the kernel boot. I think that rootskel should clear most or all such envrionment variables, to prevent strange behavior. It would probably be best to do it somewhere in init. yaboot-installer relies on having the kernel environment available to it so that it can set video=ofonly in the installed system if it was needed to boot d-i. If this is implemented, it would be very helpful if the variables were made available somewhere else, and preferably for there to be a grace period where they're available in both places. -- Colin Watson [EMAIL PROTECTED] -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe.
