This entry could possibly be used as a general all defaults entry
 (keyboard=US for instance).

This is nearly ready, I just need to sort out a minor glitch.

BTW how will the @euro modifier be added for EU countries? Note also
that el_GR.UTF-8 id the preferred locale for Greek.

Bug#249119: netcfg: A way to mark templates as unused would be nice

2004-05-15 Thread Joshua Kwan
Package: netcfg
Severity: wishlist

Sometimes I wish to remove a template from my master templates file
because it is no longer used or currently has no purpose. If I
reconsider and add it back, this is no problem if the template is not
translated at all. However, especially in the case of d-i, I do not
want to lose the myriad translations that have been made to a given
template, yet it is important to not have excess unused templates in
udebs where space is at a premium. Therefore a method of marking templates
as disabled or unused so that they are not included in the compiled
templates file would allow one to save translations instead of having to
delete them. This then saves space in the compiled deb.

The flip side is that this probably would allow for a lot of bitrot to
occur in source packages.

When a msgid is no more used, it is commented in PO files.
So unless translators or maintainers delete those commented translations
manually (or via an evil tool), they will be back automatically if
strings are added again.

I didn't upload partman-md because my testing environment doesn't
allow me to test this package. In particular there are some changes
in the scripts partman-lvm/init.d/lvm and partman-lvm/undo.d/lvm in
order to detect the existing file systems on logical volumes. I
haven't attempted to make similar changes in partman-md.

I get something like the following:

The following partitions are going to be formatted:

partition #3 of IDE1 slave as swap
  partition #5 of IDE1 slave as ext2
partition #6 of IDE1 slave as lvm
partition #7 of IDE1 slave as raid
partition #1 of RAID1 device #1 as reiserfs
partition #1 of LVM VG vg, LV home as ext2
partition #1 of LVM VG vg, LV scratch as ext3

However, partition #5 of IDE1 slave has already been formated as ext2
when I went in the LVM configuration menu and it wrote changes to
disk. This is correctly not being formated again, and should also not
be displayed.

Hi,

Rather than repartition, this time I chose to leave my partitioning as it
was

(/dev/hda2 = ext3
 /dev/hda3 = swap
 /dev/hda4 = LVM)

and reactivate the existing VG. This worked fine, and the partitioner showed
the partition arrangement as it should.

When I then went to each LV, and went to mount them, the partitioner said
that no filesystem was detected on the LV, and only gave me the choice of
formatting it, not leaving it as it was and mounting it.

I suspect something's amiss with the filesystem detection code.

Andrew

In d-i, it's common to have Finish items at the bottom of the sreen. p=
artman
breaks this assumption when it shows some help and other options at the b=
ottom,
whereas the finish is at the top. I think you could move the items from =
the
bottom up, and move the finish down.

Entries in the generated fstab are sorted by device name.
They should be sorted by mount point name.

For example, if you have /usr on /dev/sdb1 and /usr/local on /dev/sda3 (which
was my case), in the generated fstab, /usr/local will be listed before /usr.
In such a case, /usr/local will be mounted before /usr, which is something we
absolutely do not want to happen.

Comments/Problems:

The program to partition the hard drive was very intimidating; for example, it wasn't
obvious to reformat a partition in use, one hilites it, hits enter, and then proceeds.
An instruction on the instruction to choose the partition to have a file system put on
it would have help me get through the install faster.

Other than that, however, the install worked very well. I only had to hit next and it
installed.

Package: partman-auto
Version: 15

steps to reproduce:

1) Choose auto-partition
2) write partition map
3) get yelled at because there's no NewWorld boot partition (see bug 243253)
4) go back to the partition map
5) delete the new ext3 and swap partitions
6) choose FREE SPACE
7) select Create a new partition
8) set size to 820K
9) set usage to Use as NewWorld boot partition
10) choose Done setting up
11) choose FREE SPACE
12) choose auto-partition

Actual results:

partition map now shows the former NewWorld boot partition as do not use
instead of boot

Expected results:

the NewWorld boot partition should still be intact

Comments/Problems:

The boot loader would not install an entry for WindowsXP located in my hda1. (no
choice was given in the matter)

The partitioning utility referred to my HD's as 'IDE1 Master' and 'IDE1 Slave' this
got me confused at first. (I was expecting the
acostum linux way 'hda' and hdb')

While the installer detect my CDROM's drivers it gets confused if I have a CD inserted
in the second drive.
Due to such confusion the installer is unable to proceed. The installer loose track of
what driver had the installer CD.
The same problem occurs ergardless of selecting

The system did not detect my disk - which is fine - however it did not
complain... I was very confused the partitioning questions because they
did not display any disks.

Probably there should be an error message displayed if there are
no hard drives detected.

partman does not complain if there is no hard drive, but happily
displays a manually partition disk menu and then shows no disk.

Dell Dimension X400 - installed with no IDE hard drive in the box,
booted from floppies boot.img and root.img - came up fine. When
reached the partitioning menu, I realized I had not put a HD in the
machine at all - the only media devices were cdrom and floppy.
The Partition menu was weird and circular in this case, rather than
pointing out there was not any device acceptable to recevie the
installation.

Keep up the good work - this installer looks GREAT! Once I put an
actual hard drive in the system, it came up perfectly - you guys
rock!

Using the sarge-powerpc-netinst.iso image as of 2004-04-01, I
attempted to install Debian on an iMac. The install failed because it
did not create a partition for yaboot.

The details:

Comments/Problems:

I have chosen the german locale at the beginning of the installation. When I
want to set a particular mount option of a partition I get the following

[ ] notail - Setzen Sie dies
=2E..

The second line is part of the comment of the first option. The problem
is, that if I select the third option for noatime the nodev option shows
up later on in the partition-settings overview. The options below the
second line are off by one.

When I attempted to upgrade tetex-bin today, I got a slew of errors
about No space left on device despite having what should be plenty of
space:

Severity: normal

Hi,

I've installed sarge yesterday from beta4 (and already submitted an
installation report). Now I've found another problem about the generated
fstab: it isn't ordered correctly.

In particular at installation time I choose to have a partition for /home
and two other for /home/students and /home/staff (I'm doing this
installation for a school).

The resulting fstab had the second two before /home itself, thus
causing mount to complain that their mount moint was non-existent and
actually not mounting them.

This may depend on the fact that /home resides on the second raid disc
provided by the controller (/dev/cciss/c0d1) while the other two reside
on the first one (/dev/cciss/c0d0) (or, at installation time
/dev/cciss/disc1 and /dev/cciss/disc0)

Anyway the installer component that generates the fstab should take care
that the order respects the filesystem hierarchy, before anything else!

Thanks,

Guido

I think this has been fixed in our development branch but hasn't been

  * Fix a rather glaring (but not glaring enough) shell syntax error.
Still doesn't work because we aren't priming the right debconf

Yes partman-auto can not partition entire drive with sun disk label.
This is because of a bug in libparted and can not be fixed in
partman-auto. However partman-auto should not propose to do something
that it can not do. The easiest fix is to remove partman-auto for
sparc but on the other hand the guided partitioning of a free space
works...

This is one of the possible symtoms of the bterm/sparc framebuffer bug.
Try adding the debian-installer/framebuffer=false option to the silo

I tried this option with both the beta 4 image and cdrom-mini.iso. It

Re: call for help: quik- (oldworld ppc) installer (d-i skills needed, not powerpc)

2004-05-15 Thread Holger Levsen
Hi,

  btw, isn't mkvmlinux
  (http://packages.debian.org/unstable/devel/mkvmlinuz) suitable to create
boot floppies for oldworld ?! (I currently don't have a monitor for my
oldworld mac but I'll get one until the weekend.)
I'm in a similar situation and will try it soon; I only heard about
 mkvmlinuz today.

Has anybody tried now ? ;)

d-i installer installs quik just fine, and quik (at least for my powermac
4400/200) creates a good quik.conf, except for the refered link to
/boot/vmlinux. /boot/vmlinux-2.4.25-powerpc-small exists, but the link to
/boot/vmlinux is missing. I think this is a bug in
  kernel-image-powerpc-small.
No, we can fix this in rootskel, and we need to fix it anyway for yaboot
(see a couple of merged bugs against yaboot-installer). I've got the
change in my working copy, and it just needs testing.

Could you please point me to the exact location in rootskel's code? I just had
a brief look at the contents of rootskel_0.75.tar.gz but couldn't find it.

if someone would be willing to help start with a quik-installer I would
happily help that person and (co-)maintain it and collect open firmware
  settings for specific mac models.
I'll try to check in what I've got over the weekend, unfinished and
 untested though it is.

That's great! Until then I'll examine the build at
http://people.debian.org/~luther/debian-installer/daily-powerpc-built/2004.05.15/powerpc-small/floppy/
and post the results.

regards,
Holger

Re: propigating udebs to testing for the next release

2004-05-15 Thread Martin Michlmayr
So, I've a question. I want to commit a change to base-installer
which will allow root partitions to be on LVM. However, this requires
initrd-tools 0.1.68 which was accepted today (and will break LVM
installations with an older initrd-tools). If I make the
base-installer change now, this means this version cannot move to
testing. I guess I could wait 10 days to commit that change, but that
would slow down development quite a few. I suppose I can commit it in
5 days, because we said udebs need to be in unstable for 5 days before
we consider moving them to testing. Is this the right thing to do?

Bug#249049: INSTALL REPORT

2004-05-15 Thread Christian Pernegger
The grub-installer is quite confused about hdc being the first BIOS
disk, but that is to be expected I guess.
I don't think having hc as the first disk is that uncommon, so we
should try to make this work. What problems did you encounter
exactly?
Onboard PATA controller:
Primary master == hda: Maxtor 4D080H4, ATA DISK drive
Primary slave == hdb: JLMS XJ-HD166S, ATAPI CD/DVD-ROM drive
Secondary master == hdc: Maxtor 6Y120L0, ATA DISK drive
The disk on SM is set to boot in BIOS.
If I answer the install in MBR question with a yes, it executes
grub-install (hd0) -- the boot sector lands on the wrong disk. If I chose
no, and chose (hd1) I get a grub prompt, but the root disk is set to
(hd1,1), where there isn't even a partition. Easily fixed by editing
menu.list, but ...

grub-install can use device nodes as arguments, so the default call could
be:
grub-install /dev/??? (node of disk on which /boot resides)
and the 'root' entry in menu list set to
(hd0,?). ? being the partition numer of the partition that has /boot

That way the boot sector should land on the right disk, and grubs 'root'
entry, since (hd0) at boot-time seems to be the disk that was booted from in
all cases. Or not?

Cheers
C

Even if you wait 5 days, we would then have broken LVM installs for 5
more days until the new initrd-tools reaches testing, and the
base-installer change would not get tested at all in that time period
(unless someone installed unstable with d-i), defeating the 5 day delay.

I think the thing to do in this case is to wait for the new initrd-tools
to go in before changing base-installer. You could try to get that
expedited. If the change in base-installer is small and well confined to
LVM systems, then we could let it in in less than 5 days after
initrd-tools goes in.

Would it be possible to make it use the new initrd-tools iff it's
available and continue to work with the old one?

Why? I thought you said udebs have to be in unstable for at least

Dear Debian Installation-Report Team,

it seem that I found the problem that caused the Bug #248973 that I just
reported.

The debian-installer was scanning /dev/hda3 which contained directory
names with underscores and umlauts (created by the German WinXP
installation). Onse I removed these directories (presumably I could have
also renamed them), the installation from the usb-stick proceed nicely.
Hopefully the installer can be modified in a way that directory names with
unusual characters are not a problem any further.

Thank you very much.

Bug#248787: installation-reports

2004-05-15 Thread jeff
 * [EMAIL PROTECTED] [EMAIL PROTECTED] [2004-05-12 21:00]:

I have 2 network cards and nether can get an address using the default
 2.4
kernel, though gnoppix 0.6.0 RC1 seems to have no problem, which uses
 the
 2.4.24 kernel.

Strange. Your card uses the natsemi module, right? Can you open a
shell on the 2nd virtual terminal (alt-F2), and a) check if this
module has been loaded (look at /proc/modules) and b) and if not load
it by hand (modprobe natsemi). Does that help?

I tried that out, and the modulas for both cards were loaded. I ran
dhclient eth0 from the command line to see if I could get anymore
information, the only error message I got was

dhclient-script: 99: sleep: not found

It acted like it was trying to get address... I tried a static ip as
well, but that didn't work ether, which suggest to me that the modual is
not working right.

I had this problem with the eailyer version of the install, but I gave up.
I checked the integraty of the cd and it failed! But tht happened with
the earilyer version as well. Does the intergraty checker work? The
md5sum for the iso checks out ok.

I really like what you guys are doing with the installer, so if there is
anything more I can do to help, let me know.

Keep up the good work,

-Jeff

same kernel and modules for the cd install (that can't mount the root fs

Bug#248011: installation-reports: Partial installation report on Dell Latitude X200 (Firewire CD)

 11800551unknown unknown R5C551 IEEE 1394 Controller
 11800552unknown unknown R5C552 IEEE 1394 Controller

Can you provide lspci -n output too, so we can see which of these is
your controller, and make it load ieee1394.

AFAIK to module to load is not ieee1394, but ohci1394 (see below). The
ieee1394 is the common code of all 1394 controllers and when you load one of
the host controller modules with modprobe it is automatically loaded as a
dependeny.

Gaudenz

FWIW, my firewire controller is this:

 00:13.0 FireWire (IEEE 1394): Texas Instruments TSB43AB21 IEEE-1394a-2000 Controller
 (PHY/Link)
 00:13.0 Class 0c00: 104c:8026

 Listed in discover1-data as:

 104c8026unknown unknown TSB43AB21 IEEE-1394a-2000 Controller
 (PHY/Link)

I can load ieee1394 and it finds the controller, I have no firewire
stuff to test further. discover1-data seems to have a lot of firewire
controllers that are listed as unknown and so load no module. I don't
know if the procedure is to wait for a report from a user for each
before turning it on, or what.

With 2.6 kernel, all went fine as soon as I manually loaded the following
  modules (order is important):

  -ieee1394
  -ohci1394
  -sbp2
  -sr_mod

If discover can find the controller, then loading the rest of these
modules can be taken care of by hw-detect or something.

got a few notes if anyone wants them.)

I've installed 3 times and have experienced the same problem each time.
Yaboot cannot see the vmlinux link to the installed kernel. My partition
 table is like this:

 #9 bootstrap
 #10 /boot
 #11 swap
 #12 /

vmlinux is on 12, pointing to the powerpc image on 10. yaboot.conf seems
fine, but when I tried to run ybin from /target I wasn't clever enough
to work out all the paths etc.

I've updated yaboot-installer, version 0.0.21, to cope with kernel
symlinks in /boot. There still needs to be a change in rootskel to
actually set the symlink in /boot rather than /; I've checked this into
trunk, but haven't uploaded it yet.

Cheers,

BTW how will the @euro modifier be added for EU countries? Note also

Well, the default locale is, imho, up to translators and to be set in

Installation failed here. I can continue the installation of base

I believe I've finally found out what's wrong with this, after
reproducing it once again myself: parted doesn't report hfs unless you
actually create an hfs filesystem there; we don't have hfsutils-udeb,
and don't really want to create a filesystem there anyway since mkofboot
does it later.

I also believe I know the necessary fix, finally: I'll have
partman-newworld stuff the list of boot partitions into a debconf
template which yaboot-installer can then just fetch.

Cheers,

tested for $initrd, without always setting it, and $initrd is set in the
environment from the kernel boot. I think that rootskel should clear
most or all such envrionment variables, to prevent strange behavior. It
would probably be best to do it somewhere in init.

yaboot-installer relies on having the kernel environment available to it
so that it can set video=ofonly in the installed system if it was needed
to boot d-i. If this is implemented, it would be very helpful if the
variables were made available somewhere else, and preferably for there
to be a grace period where they're available in both places.

Bug reassigned from package `netcfg' to `debconf'.

I don't understand why this bug is still open and assigned to debconf,
since a) debconf has nothing to do with po files and b) Dennis told us
that standard po files stuff takes care of commenting out unused entries
and uncommenting them later if they become used again.

Hi,

While I was testing the Turkish unicode keymap (trqu), I noticed that=20
kbd-chooser couldn't set the keyboard mode to unicode, though it could=20
detect the unicode mapping. After a quick debug session, I found that=20
the loadkeys + set_kbd_mode calling order was indeed wrong. After=20
loading the unicode keymap, 'loadkeys' gave a d-i warning and failed,=20
because the keyboard mode had not been set yet. Simply reversing the=20
calling order fixed the problem. Please find the patch attached.

Regards,
