Thanks, that does sill seem to be present.
I will rectify this in the SVN tree ASAP
and it should be fixed in the next release,
   likely kernel-source-2.4.26-4.

Thanks for the quick response to this issue.

What is the expected timeline for this kernel-source package to be

If there are no objections from other members of the kernel team
I can have this ready today or tomorrow. (Likely tomorrow as
I have a full day today and I don't want to rush and make some
 silly mistake.)

What is the expected timeline for kernel-image packages built from these
  sources to be uploaded?

I can make i386 kernel-images available at the same time as the
 kernel-source. I don't handle other architectures so I can't speak for
 them.

It didn't atke me as long as I expected to do my other chores
and get the new packages ready. I have put them _tempoarily_
up on http://debian.vergenet.net/

There is a new kernel-source-2.4.26 package, 2.4.26-4
and a new kernel-image-2.4.26-i386 package, also 2.4.26-4.
There are no changes to the kernel-image package,
other than building it against the new kernel-source.

The change log for the kernel-source package is:

   * Fix stack allocation in crypt(). Patch by Herbert Xu
 (closes: #257120)
 . crypto/cipher.c
   * Reversed patch to PCI initialisation code on Alpha
Patch by Herbert Xu, Steve Langasek
 (closes: #253787)
 . arch/alpha/kernel/core_cia.c

If there are no objections from the kernel-team I plan
to upload these tomorrow.

Feel free to test, build other binary packages etc... I do not plan to
make any changes to this unless something _bad_ crops up. But It would
be probably best not to upload a kernel-image package that is built from
kernel-source-2.4.26-2.4.26-4, just in case there is a last minute
change.

Comments/Problems:
The Silicon Image SiI 3512 wasn't detected by the installer. But after a

But random crashes occur by hard disk access. So, formatting some
partitions causes a system hang-up.
(Note: The sata_sil driver on the gentoo live CD 2004.1-amd64 works fine
for me!)

Another issue: Menus of the d-i displayed disturbed. I think, I've
tested a unlucky daily build.

apologies for any inaccuracies ;)

I don't know what this tells you but let me know if you need anything
else. It would be good to get nc working so I could paste this output.

So I suspect that quik partially installed but in the absence of an
initrd image, couldn't complete. I guess that this is addressed in
  Bug#260333 filed against initrd-tools?

I doubt it. quik-installer should be able to deal with a non-initrd
kernel quite happily. The problem here is that something is causing
quik-installer to exit without saying why, and I'd like to know what.

Also, I suspect you were looking for the kernel and initrd in /boot
 rather than /target/boot.
Yes - I was - I see there is rather more substance to /target than /
.. a little knowledge is a dangerous thing ;)

d-i and qemu ?

2004-07-22 Thread Raphael Hertzog
Hi everybody,

I wanted to try d-i with qemu but it failed to detect the network card
(although I made sure that qemu had network support by using the -n
switch). Selecting the ne module by hand doesn't help either (I tried
several modules related to NE2K).

FYI, here's how I use qemu for d-i :

I created a big empty file for /dev/hda (hda.bin) and uses netinst bet4 image
as cdrom image. setup-net.sh just calls ifup tun0 (which is defined in
/etc/network/interfaces).

The command line is the following :
qemu -m 128 -hda ~/debian-cd/test-d-i/hda.bin -cdrom
~/debian-cd/sarge-i386-netinst.iso -boot d -n ~/debian-cd/test-d-i/setup-net.sh

Anyone managed to install debian with d-i within qemu ?

Will I have more luck with bochs ? Did someone document how to use bochs
for testing d-i ?

Cheers,

The versions of qemu before 0.6.0 do not support PCI, and d-i do not

qemu. In version 0.6.0, both network and video card is
autodetected. :)

Anyone managed to install debian with d-i within qemu ?

I do it several times a week. :)

  Thanks Stephen

I used the above on tty2, which from the man page I understand means
that this machine will listen for shell commands on port 2080. However,
when try to contact this host from my workstation using:

  [EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ nc -t Homer 2080
  Homer.PRIORYROAD [192.168.1.21] 2080 (?) : No route to host

Either the machine isn't really on the network or you have a routing
 problem.
I think you're right 'cos I can't ping 192.168.1.21 (100% packet loss)

I guess the network doesn't get configured 'til reboot - which it won't
and that's why I need to get to the log output from another machine ;(

I think I'll try to repeat the install and leave it to DHCP rather than
configuring the network manually and see if that gives me a useable
network connection before reboot.

Many thanks for the help

Regards

Clive

Does ifconfig show you have a configured network on Homer?

What about route -n? It's good to see a default gateway.

-t isn't necessary, I'm not sure what effect it would have.

Can you ping 192.168.1.21? Can Homer wget some random web page?

   Hi everybody,

I wanted to try d-i with qemu but it failed to detect the network card
(although I made sure that qemu had network support by using the -n
switch). Selecting the ne module by hand doesn't help either (I tried
   several modules related to NE2K).

The versions of qemu before 0.6.0 do not support PCI, and d-i do not
autodetect ISA cards. I recommend upgrading to the latest version
qemu. In version 0.6.0, both network and video card is
  autodetected. :)

I do it with qemu 0.5.5. the card is a ne usin this parametres:

 io=0x300 irq=9

I think, I'm not in home at this moment but if not correct send mail to me.

Great to see that the RAID array and the network controller are recognised, I tried 2

problem for me. So all went well until GRUB.
I just had some hesitation during the partitioning concerning the swap,
I expected to find it among the file types, after having redone the
partioning I understood how it works, perhaps I am dumb.
GRUB refused to install,
(... does not have any corresponding bios drive)
I thought the name of the partition is'nt good and I tried others but none worked. I
tried also to modify /boot/grub/device.map or delete it
but nothing worked.
I tried then lilo but not much happened (the last message was
setting up lilo
Then I replay the install from beginning. After GRUB failure, I open
a shell to investigate, I use nano to edit device.map, and then
I try lilo another time, but it refuse to install, complaining that
the lilo package is'nt on the CD (apparently, it has forgotten we are
in a network install).
Then I reinstall from beginning, use directly lilo, and it works!!!

New d-i devcamp?

2004-07-22 Thread Petter Reinholdtsen

Last years d-i devcamp was a great success. The co-location with the
non-intel linux gathering in Oldenburg proved to move the d-i
porting a long step forward, and the grouping of d-i people managed to
improve d-i a lot.

Would it be interesting to repeat the success? Who would join? Date
and location is yet to be determined, but I would love to co-locate
with the Oldenburg developers meeting again.

A summary from last years meeting is available from
URL:http://lists.debian.org/debian-boot/2003/09/msg00850.html.

(this bug is maybe a console-common bug)

After the welcome message of base-config, during any install (2.4 or 2.6,
any locale), the keyboard is improperly configured at second stage (in all
cases, the selected keyboard in d-i 1st stage was fr-latin9).

A lot of messages very quickly appear on the console:

Couldn't get a file descriptor referring to the console

Then console-data configure screens appear, which is unusual...

Configuring console-data just after this doe snot trigger any error even
when choosing the same keyboard layout than chosen in 1st stage.

4. at the top of the country list, you will see 3 untranslated country
names,
Britain (UK), Korea (South), Russia. Especially the top Britain
(UK) line
looks very badly formatted...
5. choosing Britain (UK) hangs apt-setup.

The problem was, that different names were used between iso3166.tab and
iso-codes package.

iso3166.tab:

GB Britain (UK)
KP Korea (North)
KR Korea (South)
RU Russia

iso-codes/iso_3166/iso_3166.xml:
name=United Kingdom/
name=Korea, Democratic People's Republic of/
name=Korea, Republic of /
name=Russian Federation /

This happens only in Korean and Russian locales.

I don't know which package should be fixed or which are the prefered
names...
Any ideas?

Bug#54233: update

2004-07-22 Thread Joey Hess
Update on the status of this bug. Tasksel can remove tasks nicely now,
so that's not a problem. All it needs is a way to tell if a task is
installed, which with modern tasks probably means just checking to see
if the task's key packages are installed. However, one problem to watch
out for is deciding that a task is installed because its key packages
are there, thus marking it for install, and re-installing it, pulling in
many non-key packages that are not wanted. Probably needs an
already-installed state in tasksel, or the like.

 Except for zh_CN, zh_TW, and pt_BR, surely?

Is there a need to treat them differently in this code? Both zh_*
need the same packages installed, I believe. And pt need the same
extra treatment as pt_BR.

After failing to install Sarge at home I took my movable hard-disk to
the place with Debian mirror in the local net. Booting from floppies
went smoothly. Installation also, until installation of lilo failed.

Error message was almost impossible to read, because screen went back
to graphics mode. I looked /target/etc/lilo.conf and made a link:

ln -s /dev/ide/host0/bus0/target0/lun0/disc /dev/hda
No success!

error message was:

/target/sbin/lilo -C /target/etc/lilo.conf
gave:
Fatal: trying to map files from unnamed device 0x0008 (NFS/RAID mirror down?)

I did not use driver floppy, because I only needed network card and
IDE disk support. Everything else can wait.

I installed Sarge successfully to the same computer I used now

Hi,

first and foremost: thank you for your bug report
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=238553

I'm currently processing old installation reports, and since you
reported some problems with the debian installer back in March, I would
very much appreciate it, if you could find time to download and test
the latest[1] cd image and confirm whether you still see the problems
you've mentioned. If they are no longer present, I will close this
report.

Much has changed with the installer since March, and it is not unlikely
that the problems you mention have been dealt with by the Debian
Developers working on the installer.

Looking forward to hearing from you again. Thank you for your time.

I burned the sparc/beta3/sarge-sparc-businesscard.iso

Comments/Problems:

This was a super installation, everything went very well. I was
surprised to see that my wireless network connection was detected as the
beta2 installer was not able to do that. The addition of a full
featured partition tool is a big plus - one that really sets this
installer apart from it's earlier versions. This is a great installer.

If I wanted to point out one weakness in the installation process it
would have to be the difficulty that multilevel multisection dialogs
present to the user. One example of

Not sure if this is the right place, but here it goes. As we all
know, sun servers without a framebuffer (and certain other x86s too)

PITA, and there are lots of them (especially when partitioning).

Could something be added to the d-i menus to accomodate better these
 slow consoles?

debian-boot is the right place for this. I, for one, agree with you. The
main problem to me seems to be that when a dialog closes and a new one
opens, the process goes:

1. Erase (overwrite with blue background) the old dialog box
2. Erase background
3. Redraw background
4. Draw new dialog

Seems to me that steps 2 and 3 can be removed. After step 1, you're left
with a blue background, so you should be able to go right to step 4.

Bug#260949: postinst fails on serial console installs

2004-07-22 Thread Martin Michlmayr
Package: lowmem
Version: 0.13
Severity: important

lowmem's postinst fails on serial console installs when it tries to
kill the tail processes - they don't exist on serial installs so
kill is run without any parameter.

or none was installed. Network configuration via DHCP.
As the

UTF-8 default

2004-07-22 Thread Steinar H. Gunderson
Hi,

Is there any reason why UTF-8 seems to be the default in Debian nowadays? I
installed sid with d-i (current businesscard as of 2004-07-21) and noticed
that LC_CTYPE=en_US.UTF-8 (a locale that was not even generated); this
confused aterm and probably other applications.

A friend of mine installed sarge with d-i today (ie. current businesscard as
of 2004-07-22) and now his x-chat is suddenly spewing out UTF-8 on IRC. Are
we copying Red Hat's classic bugs here? :-)

  Except for zh_CN, zh_TW, and pt_BR, surely?

Is there a need to treat them differently in this code? Both zh_*
need the same packages installed, I believe. And pt need the same
 extra treatment as pt_BR.

I'm not sure. It depends on what the field in question actually
represents -- pt_BR is certainly a different language than pt.

I would be curious to know how this got set in the absence of a
generated locale. Do you know the particulars of his environment? Is
he running one of the desktop envs (GNOME/KDE)?

Sending UTF-8 text on IRC is not a bug. Sending anything *other* than
UTF-8 should be considered a bug. :P

Bug#260109: SOLUTION = kde and gnome and any app 5 minutes start up each

2004-07-22 Thread Andre Felipe Machado
Hello,
I found at another list the solution for the kde / gnome and any kde gnome app
very long (5 to 10 minutes or more) time for start up.
http://lists.debian.org/debian-user/2004/04/msg12271.html

The user that created the solution posted it at 27 april 2004 at that list.

edit the /etc/network/interfaces
include the 2 following lines:
auto lo
iface lo inet loopback

restart network or reboot.

It should be included before the sarge release.
The problem (in fresh installs) is very frustrating.
Please, include the simple solution as soon as possible.
Regards.

Andre Felipe

Partman created the ext3 file system, but didn't write the partition
table. I already fixed this bug on my computer but I haven't tested the
fix enough so I have not commited.

For now the work around is to make any change in the partition table.
For example you can remove a partition and recreate it afterwards. Or
you can simply toggle the bootable flag of the bootable partition off
and then back on. In this way partman will think that the partition
table is changed and will write it to the disk.

Re: Processed: cloning 260658, retitle -1 to pci ids for sata_sil, reassign -1 to discover1-data

2004-07-22 Thread Harald Dunkel
Joey,
reassigning this bug report to discover-data won't help. I
have mounted the initrd and verified that sata_sil is a
lready in discover-data.
There is a problem with d-i that prevents sata_sil from
being loaded at installation time.
