Bug#717449: Info received (Bug#717449: Acknowledgement (Generates /etc/network/interfaces config for eth0 although network-manager is installed (desktop task)))

2013-07-20 Thread Michael Biebl
On IRC KiBi suspected the following line [1] to be the culprit:

if in-target dpkg-query -s network-manager 2>/dev/null | grep -q
'^Status: install ok installed'; then

I ran that on the d-i console, and the check was indeed not successful.
Changing that to

if in-target sh -c "dpkg-query -s network-manager 2>/dev/null | grep -q
'^Status: install ok installed'"; then

fixed it for me.

For comfirmation, I also ran the check against a non-installed package,
to be sure the test was indeed working properly.

Would be great to have this fix in the next point release.

Cheers,
Michael

Bug#717449: Generates /etc/network/interfaces config for eth0 although network-manager is installed (desktop task)

2013-07-20 Thread Michael Biebl
Package: netcfg
Version: 1.110
Severity: important

Hi,

I just did a installation of 7.1 inside a VM using the desktop task,
which means network-manager was installed along with it.
I was surprised to find the following in /e/n/i:

# The primary network interface
allow-hotplug eth0
iface eth0 inet dhcp

This causes the well known problem, that the interface won't be managed
by network-manager.

I'm remember that we had fixed that while working towards the wheezy
release, so I'm surprised to find that issue in 7.1

Marking as important. I think we should address this for 7.2.

Cheers,
Michael

No, please don't reassign this to me because I have no idea whether and
when this bug was fixed.

In case you missed the main part of this bug report, here it is:

Which means: you cheat with the environment, breaking unrelated
programs. Not the finest art.

Regards,
Eduard.

I don't see a good reason for upstream maintainers (or every other
distro) to do (or endorse) this in the first place…

That's usually the case with udebs, they mimick casual debs, so dealing
with the latter usually means the former get dealt with at the same
time, yeah. Just thought I'd mention it to make sure.

Yes. I still disagree with the soname bump, but that wasn't your
question.

Well, the removal of
 udev_get_{dev,sys,run}_path()
could probably be reverted, but support for
 udev_monitor_from_socket()
 udev_queue_get_failed_list_entry()
is more tricky, and I don't see a good reason to divert from upstream
and every other distros for this. I've filed relevant bug reports a
while ago and the rdeps should be ready, so we should only need a couple
of binNMUs.
Anyway, will file a separate transition bug for libudev.

Ah, thanks. Shouldn't be an issue though, as libusb-1.0-0 currently
depends on libudev0, so would be binNMUed as part of the libudev transition.

Ok, thanks for the feedback. I gather from your reply, that
debian-installer should be fine otherwise and isn't affected by that rename?

Hi,

thank you for submitting installation reports, much appreciated.

I read through all the bugs mentioned here (and I'm sure they were read by
several people at the time they were submitted) and am closing them now as/if
- they (finally) indicated success and/or
- I know from first hand experience that the functionality is working in
Wheezy and/or
- they only contained very little information and/or
- they contained user errors and/or
- they have been from a development phase where things were not stable and/or
- they are quite old.

If I've closed a bug incorrectly please do reply (it's easy to reopen and I'll
do if requested) or just file a new one - thats often better, as the bug log
will be clearer and shorter and not contain cruft.

cheers,
Holger

FWIW, I'm still not convinced this soname bump is a good idea at all
aassuming it's still the removal of a few functions that triggers it).

That's not sufficient AFAICT:
| Package: libusb-1.0-0-udeb
| Source: libusbx
| Version: 2:1.0.16-1
| Depends: libc6-udeb (>= 2.17), udev-gtk-udeb

That's OK. The tricky part is just to keep shipping the shlibs file
even if a symbol file is present, since symbols don't work for udebs.

I see debian-experimental has the --add-udeb for dh_makeshlibs so
you're apparently good to go.

Mraw,
KiBi.

udev-gtk-udeb has been renamed to libudev1-udeb

2013-07-20 Thread Michael Biebl
Hi d-i team,

as part of the udev update to version 204 (in experimental), the
udev-gtk-udeb package was renamed to libudev1-udeb to better reflect
what the package actually contains.

This will be aligned with the libudev0→libudev1 soname bump, so it
seemed like a good occasion to do the rename of the udeb package as part
of that library transition.

I've grepped through debian-installer.git sources and didn't find any
references to the old package name.
So from what I see, a simple rebuild of xserver-xorg-core-udeb should
suffice to pick up the new name. And this rebuild will happen for the
libudev library transition anyways.

Of course libudev1.shlibs was updated accordingly:
 libudev 1 libudev1
 udeb: libudev 1 libudev1-udeb

That said, as I don't know much about d-i, I thought I'll let you know
in advance, before we upload that package to unstable.

Please have a look and tell us, if that would break anything related to
d-i, so we can fix/prepare it in advance. If everything is fine and we
don't need to worry about the d-i part, please let us
(pkg-systemd-maintainers@l.a.d.o) know, too.

Cheers,
Michael

Package: cdrom

Version: 6.0

Neither the "install" nor the "graphical install" option works.
When I choose one of these options, the bottom of the screen gets covered with
multicolored snow, and nothing else happens.
I burned another cd, and the problem persists.

I managed to install and run Lenny on another optiplex gx110 (I gave it to a
friend).
The debian 5 install process works on this computer.

I searched the web with combinations of: debian dell install squeeze gx110
I found no answer yet.

Is there a way to solve this problem ?
Thanks.

Package: installation-reports
Severity:

Part 1: failure to install from CD (similar to bug #602380)

I've failed to do a fresh netinst of Squeeze from a CD on a new desktop. The
install hangs during "Select and install software". I looked at console 4
while it was hanging and saw 8-line kernel errors like this ad nauseam:

sr 0:0:0:0: [sr0] Sense Key: Medium error [current]
sr 0:0:0:0: [sr0] Add. Sense: Unrecovered read error
sr 0:0:0:0: [sr0] CDB: Read(10): 28 00 00 00 00 1e 00 00 02 00
end_request: I/O error, dev sr0, sector 120
Buffer I/O error on device sr0, logical block 30
Buffer I/O error on device sr0, logical block 31
sr 0:0:0:0: [sr0] Unhandled sense code
sr 0:0:0:0: [sr0] Result: hostbyte=DID_OK driverbyte=DRIVER_SENSE

So it's failing to read the CD. Other possibly useful info:

The motherboard is an Intel DH55HC, and the CD/DVD drive is a Toshiba
Samsung DVD Writer Model TS-H663 (see lspci output below).

The info file on the CD says
Debian GNU/Linux 6.0.0 "Squeeze" - Official i386 NETINST Binary-1
20110205-14:34

With another desktop and CD/DVD drive, I verified the checksums on the CD
  with
md5sum -c md5sum.txt | grep -v 'OK$'
I also made a second copy of the CD and failed to install with that.

On the same hardware, netinst CD installs of 5.0.8 and Wheezy ran to
  completion.

During the failed 6.0.0 install, the CD was successfully read quite a bit
before it hung. I found over 3 files installed on /dev/sda1 (mounted
  on /target).

Part 2: failure to install from USB flash drive (similar to bug #593013)

I made an 8-GB flash drive bootable as follows:

cat debian-6.0.0-i386-netinst.iso > /dev/sdc
sync

It booted, and the install got through the initial language and keymap
selection. Then:

  No common CD-ROM was detected.

I also failed to install Wheezy this way, although Wheezy from CD ran to
completion. The version of Wheezy was:
Debian GNU/Linux testing "Wheezy" - Official Snapshot i386 NETINST Binary-1
20110215-15:58

This post at debian-user also mentions failure to install Squeeze from USB
flash:
  http://lists.debian.org/debian-user/2011/02/msg01448.html
but this poster succeeded (at least to partitioning):
  http://lists.debian.org/debian-user/2011/02/msg01562.html

not have known where to look in Wheezy. I was able to mount /media/cdrom and
read the netinst CD.

Severity: normal

Dear Maintainer,

When deleting data, the encrypted LVM assisted install (full disk) has
taken about 24 hours on my new laptop. My disk is 320 GB and it only
contained pre-installed stuff for Windows so I did not even care about
deleting each bit of it. This step was already long in the installation
procedure of previous Debian releases but this time it is much too long.

Would it be (at least) possible to make this data deletion step
optional? Would it be possible to improve the time of the data deletion
step?

Package: debian squeeze netinstall
Version: 6.0.0

When I install debian via the netinstall method (burn CD, boot, install), the
installer asks for my network card type. I answer (correctly) 3c509. The
installer apparently is able to find the card and a driver for it as it then
connects to the Internet, downloads packages, etc.

However, the installer apparently does not transfer this knowledge to
the installed OS. When squeeze boots, aside from may other annoyances, it
has no clue there is a network card installed. My various attempts to fix
this have so far been in vain since I cannot access the Internet.

I would suggest that the installer should pass along the network interface
info that it used during the install to the installed system. I don't
remember having this issue with lenny.

I am using Debian GNU/Linux 6.0.0, kernel whatever it downloaded this AM.

Hi,

thank you for submitting installation reports, much appreciated.

If I've closed a bug incorrectly please do reply (it's easy to reopen and I'll
do if requested) or just file a new one - thats often better, as the bug log
will be clearer and shorter and not contain cruft.

cheers,
Holger

Comments/Problems:
The onboard ethernet card has driver in the motherboard BIOS and is able
to use DHCP (as set up by router). This is demonstrated by using the
BIOS network install in the CMOS. The router established an address,
and the machine read it.
But the LINUX installation was not able to use DHCP, could not establish
an address with the router DHCP and could not then access the internet
to continue the installation. This machine has used an earlier version
of Debian 5.0 and did just fine with using DHCP. I did try loading a
package that may have had an ethernet card driver (e100), but was
unsuccessful. Unable to determine the problem, unsuccessful at loading
Debian 6.0 Beta. Still trying to find the problem. No error messages
in the installation except unable able to access any download sites
(mirrors).

Hi,

thank you for submitting installation reports, much appreciated.

Comments/Problems:

Attempted to install an encrypted LVM system on a USB-attached hard
drive. Tried to do as "vanilla" an install as possible, accepting the
defaults where I could. One non-default is that I wrote GRUB to
(hd1,0), the USB drive, instead of the default since I didn't want to
disturb the primary drive which has an encrypted Windows installation.

Everything appeared to go OK but the system can't boot. It reaches
the GRUB menu but when GRUB tries to boot the kernel I don't get
prompted for a password and I get:

Filesystem type unknown, partition type 0xde
Kernel /vmlinuz-2.6.26-686 root=/dev/mapper/mm177490--pc-root ro

Comments/Problems:
I'm using Mac failovers on a virtual machine where i'm trying to
install Debian Squeze.
The problem is when I try to specify my IP adress and such, I have a
gateway unreachable error.

In fact I would like tu use the following configuration:
Ip address of the virtual machine is named IPVM, the gateway is IPGT
So the machine would have the following parameters:
IP address: IPVM
Broadcast address: IPVM
Netmask: 255.255.25.255
Gateway: IPGT

A /etc/network/interfaces would look like this:

auto eth0
iface eth0 inet static
address IPVM
netmask 255.255.255.255
broadcast IPVM
post-up route add IPGT dev eth0
post-up route add default gw IPGT
post-down route del IPGT dev eth0
post-down route del default gw IPGT

But I can't configure my network like this using the installer.

Package: installation-reports
Severity: serious
Justification: 1

Squeeze installation. Installer hangs after reading the cd-rom. I have openned
console (using alt-f2) and read the log: installer tries to read floppy, but
there is no any floppy. There is multybay (doc station) but without a floppy.
Lenny istaller works fine: the same step, waits couple seconds and goes forward.

Comments/Problems:

The install gave only the initial options page and failed to proceed on
graphic or plain install.
Later tried a Lenny network install CD and it stalled after enter with a
kernal error trying to remove init!
Then put in a Etch network CD and it proceeded ok in low memory mode.

Obviously the i486 has too low a memory to be used with Lenny and above,
thus Debian is effectively i586+ only now.

Hi,

thank you for submitting installation reports, much appreciated.

I read through all the bugs mentioned here (and I'm sure they were read by
several people at the time they were submitted) and am closing them now as/if
- they (finally) indicated success and/or
- I know from first hand experience that the functionality is working in
Wheezy and/or
- they only contained very little information and/or
- they contained user errors and/or
- they have been from a development phase where things were not stable and/or
- they are very old, more than 2.3 years.

If I've closed a bug incorrectly please do reply (it's easy to reopen and I'll
do if requested) or just file a new one - thats often better, as the bug log
will be clearer and shorter and not contain cruft.

cheers,
Holger

I tried to install Debian/Testing from DVDs that I had made (jigdo)
of the snapshot on 2012/02/06. I used the expert mode of the installer.

The base system obviously was installed correctly but then the
installation came to the point where it tried to analyze the CD
for further packages (or something like this, the screen went
away very fast).

Shortly afterwards I got this message:
!! Configure the package manager
apt configuration problem
An attempt to configure apt to install additional
packages from the CD failed.

Later on I noticed:
- The installer only offered me "standard utilities" to be installed.
Nothing more. For instance, no X.
- There was no question for further CDs/DVDs as I saw it in former
  versions of the installer
- I checked the integrity of the DVD. It was ok.

syslog is in the appendix.

Comments/Problems:Everything seemed great, and I had set some
preferences and settings. As a last step I went for updates and
downloaded a LARGE quantity. Upon completion I was told to restart
and did so, but the sign-in box contents were incomplete. I got past
that with keyboard and enter's, but the desktop was unusable. It
responded promptly to clicks with the white boxes for programs but
their contents were fragmented, very incomplete, and very slow to show
up. Extensive hovering with the trackball encouraged some fragments
to appear, but never enough to be useful. Ctrl+F4 worked properly.
Rebooted several times with identical results. Shut-downs required
Ctrl+Alt+Del's.
I've done a complete re-installation in order to get online and it
again came up fast and crisp, but I prevented any updates from being
downloaded and got online with Iceweasel to send this report. I'm
going to try to download Chrome, but no further "installation work"
until I hear from you (please!)

One or more of the
numerous updates screwed things up!

Debian Testing Cd installation on KVM virtualisation stops at "Select
and install software" stage. The same symptoms occur on other debian cd
installations as well. The latest one occurred with cd install dated in
late july: I didn't manage to get the exact date version as have
discarded it. I am downloading the August 1 Debian install cd and will
try it out once completed.

Interestingly the same symptom occured when I tried to install the
debian cds on Virtualbox running on both a Debian Linux and Mac OS laptops.

Installation with RHEL 6.1 beta cd is successful on the same host.

I am using Debian GNU/Linux Sid with kernel Linux 3.0.0-1-amd64 #1 SMP

Thanks,

Hi,

thank you for submitting installation reports, much appreciated.

I read through all the bugs mentioned here (and I'm sure they were read by
several people at the time they were submitted) and am closing them now as/if
- they (finally) indicated success and/or
- I know from first hand experience that the functionality is working in
Wheezy and/or
- they only contained very little information and/or
- they contained user errors and/or
- they have been from a development phase where things were not stable.

If I've closed a bug incorrectly please do reply (it's easy to reopen and I'll
do if requested) or just file a new one - thats often better, as the bug log
will be clearer and shorter and not contain cruft.

cheers,
Holger

Hello.

Few days ago I was trying to install Debian Wheezy on amd64 using daily
netinstall iso cd (25.06.2011).

Installer failed to install grub or lilo. I wasn't able to save
installer's logfile but after checking it I saw problems with package
dependencies (grub-probe - not found, no candidate for installation,
package couldn't be installed, etc.).

Installation on encrypted volumes (dmcrypt + lvm) with separate /boot
partition.

I wasn't able to save complete installer logs, I will try to get and
add it here later (thus, as for now, severity set to important).

Regards,
 Grzegorz Bizon

Comments/Problems:

We have a number of exact same machines that have a 2GB ATP flash
cards in addition to mechanical disks. When I try to install, the
installer sees the USB flash card as /dev/sda, but it does not sees
the disk, however if I physically remove the flash card then the
installer sees all the disks. This is happening with Squeeze. I have a
nfsroot environment built on Lenny and it sees all the disks as well
as the flash card, all as /dev/sdX.

Comments/Problems:

Install went well. The only problems/observations were:

1. Partitioning

I used the default single partition setup suggested by 'partman'.
I assume that the suggested partitioning is "correct". I was
puzzled however that the suggested scheme includes a 2.5 GB swap
space since the Installation Manual states "On 32-bit architectures
(i386, m68k, 32-bit SPARC, and PowerPC), the maximum size of a swap
partition is 2GB." [C.3. Recommended Partitioning Scheme]. Is this
no longer true? Am I wasting drive space? Also, does there need
to be 512.0 B of free space at the end of the drive?

2. Keyboard was not set up correctly. I have the UK variant of the
iBook keyboard and e.g. @ and " were inverted, and some other keys
were incorrect. The Installation Manual states "Once the system
installation is complete, you'll be able to select a keyboard
layout from a wider range of choices (run kbd-config as root after
you have completed the installation)." [6.3.1.3. Choosing a
Keyboard]. I notice that 'kbd-config' is part of the
'console-common' package and this was not installed. Installing
'console-common' configures an almost perfect console keymap setup
but the X keymap is still wrong.

3. Sound did not work. It turns out that the 'snd_powermac' module
must be loaded and I have put this in '/etc/modules'. Now sound
   works.

4. Battery not detected by 'gnome-power-manager', etc. The
'pmu_battery' module must be loaded and I had to put this in
   '/etc/modules'.

5. There is no CPU frequency scaling. '/var/log/syslog' has the line:

"ondemand governor failed, too long transition latency of HW,
   fallback to performance governor"

I have installed the 'powernowd' daemon to work around this.

6. 'pbbuttonsd' failed to install. The relevant lines in
   '/var/log/installer/syslog' are probably:

Dec 2 20:17:48 apt-install: Queueing package pbbuttonsd for later
installation
   [...]
Dec 2 20:28:56 in-target: Unable to locate package pbbuttonsd
   Dec 2 20:28:56 in-target:
Dec 2 20:28:56 base-installer: warning: Failed to install pbbuttonsd into
/target/: 100

I installed this manually after installation. I am not really sure
if 'pbbuttonsd' is needed on this machine. The brightness, volume
and eject buttons work as expected without 'pbbuttonsd'. By
default, installation of 'pbbuttonsd' and its dependencies seems to
have only the following noticable effects:
   * The laptop suspends again immediately after waking from suspend
(unless this is turned off in '/e

Package: installation-reports

I have an amd64 dom0 with lenny

I successfully run the Debian Installer in a fresh domU

xm create -c xm-squeeze1.cfg install=true
install-mirror=http://mirror.positive-internet.com/debian
install-installer=http://ftp.nl.debian.org/debian/dists/testing/main/installer-amd64/current/images/

I then tried to do the first boot:

xm create -c xm-squeeze1.cfg

I get this error:

Error: Boot loader didn't return any data!

Root causes:
- Squeeze installs grub 2, which doesn't have any /boot/grub/menu.lst
- pygrub can't seem to identify the boot partition in the MBR created by
the installer
- pygrub on lenny is looking for /boot/grub/menu.lst (actually,
/grub/menu.lst on the bootable partition)

Workaround 1:
- mount the filesystem, possibly using kpartx, manually create
/boot/grub/menu.lst
- tweak the cfg file to tell pygrub to look in the /boot partition
(because it doesn't recognise the grub2 MBR)

bootargs = '/dev/mapper/vg00-squeeze1_disk0p1'

Workaround 2:
- mount the filesystem, possibly using kpartx
- copy the kernel and initrd to the dom0
- modify the cfg file, tell it to use the kernel and initrd from the
dom0 and not use pygrub as bootloader

Suggestions:
- the MBR should be recognisable by the lenny version of pygrub
- better error needed from pygrub when it doesn't find menu.lst
- maybe grub2 should create menu.lst for backwards compatibility? or
maybe some optional tool in the domU can create it?
- maybe a support package is needed for lenny dom0 users? and a helpful
message to let them know it exists?

Hi,

thank you for submitting installation reports, much appreciated.

If I've closed a bug incorrectly please do reply (it's easy to reopen and I'll
do if requested) or just file a new one - thats often better, as the bug log
will be clearer and shorter and not contain cruft.

cheers,
Holger

Hi,
I'm having some problems with Debian Squeeze installation.
Right after selecting the mirror to download updates, the installation stops
for a long time in "Downloading file 1 of 1"
(or something like that). When I start the log (Alf+F4) I see lots and lots of
"Buffer I/O errors on Device sr0", that is my CD/DVD drive.

I don't know if this is related to drivers, because it's a brand new LG
GH22NS40 (SATA),
and when I turn on my old CD drive (an Optiarc IDE), the errors happen just one
or two times,
but the installation continues in less than five seconds.

I tried to install Squeeze with 2 ISOs that I have here (different weeks and
builds). The errors persisted.

QUESTIONS:
Is there any report about this? Could it be a driver problem?
I am running the OS here right now with the LG GH22NS40. If anyone knows a
procedure to "prove" the drive, just tell me and I will do it.

Hi,
I'm having some problems with Debian Squeeze installation.
It freezes for a long time when detecting network interfaces. The interest
thing is that when I first installed Squeeze a few weeks ago, I didn't have
this problem (just some suggestion from the installer about a firmware, called
rtl8168d-2.fw), but the detection was really fast.

I downloaded a new ISO from Debian FTP, but the problem persisted.

Any suggestions about what to do? Why is it taking so long?

Package: debian-installer
Version: wheezy
Severity: minor

Hi,

Booting the Wheezy mini.iso, choosing Help from the menu, pressing F2 says:

You must have at least 44 megabytes of RAM to use this Debian installer.

Starting the installer with 64 MB of memory enters low memory mode, and
reports insufficient memory:

[...] At least 86 megabytes of memory are required.

Continuing the installation then runs into OOM situation.

The two memory requirement statements should be synchronized, 44 (or even
64) MB is clearly not enough.

Thanks,
Feri.

Package:

Version: <20090123lenny7>

also seems to afflict version 20090123

Hi there,

I have made a bootable usb stick for installation of debian on an acer
aspire one.
The stick boots fine but the problem arises when it searches for a
bootable ISO image.
I have to do this twice in order to find the image (not the actual
problem but still worth mentioning).
At first it responds with:

An installation step failed. You can try to run the failing item again
from the menu,
or skip it and choose something else. The failing step is:
Scan hard drive for an installer ISO image.

The second time it mentions mounting sda1 sda2 sda5 (hard disk) sdb1
(USB stick)
and the installer quickly finds the ISO image on the stick.
It does not seem to scan the harddrive at all (or probably only looks at
the root directory of the disk)
no hd. light going on and off.
It says:

The Iso file: /debian-505-i386-netinst.iso on /dev/sdb1/ (STABLE) will
be used as the
installation iso image.

Then the installation continues as usual but when the partitioning
system wants to write
to the disk (I choose guided partitioning use whole disk everything in
one directory /
but this choice doesn't matter - whatever you choose here leads towards
the same problem).
It fails with the following message:

The EXT3 file system creation in partition #1 of SCSI1 (0,0,0) (SDA) failed.

What caught my eye was when I opened a terminal and entered a mount
command without options.
Is that both /dev/sda1 (hard disk) and /dev/sdb1 (USB stick) are mounted
on the directory /hd-media.
this must have led to a problem when partitioning the hard disk because
partitioning a mounted volume
leads to trouble.
I tried unmounting the /cdrom directory wich contains the ISO image
mounted over the loop device,
which in turn is located on usb stick /dev/sdb1 then unmounting
/dev/sdb1 and then unmouting the harddisk /dev/sda1
what should remedy the problem.
And then reattaching the usb stick /dev/sdb1 and mounting the ISO on it
through the loopback back on /cdrom
so I could continue the installation.
However, this doesn't work because (speculation) the installer itself
seems to be using the /hd-media directory
wich results in a DEVICE BUSY when trying to unmount the /dev/sda1 or
/dev/sdb1 who are mounted there.
When playing around it seems that the scan hard drive for an ISO image
option
mounts everything - it expects the ISO image to be on and "forgets" to
unmount the devices where it does not find it.
Leading towards my problem.
After this option in the installer menu the whole lot gets tangled up
and I am not savvy enough to untangle it again.
I do not know if this is an acer aspire one problem or a more general
issue by lack of another laptop.
Anyway the installation from stick is rendered useless this way. Hope
this helps in fixing things.

Kind regards,

Sietze van de Burgt

Package: debian-installer
Version: lenny installer
Severity: critical
Justification: breaks the whole system

-- System Information:
Debian Release: 4.0 <--- Not really. It's the lenny installer
  APT prefers stable
  APT policy: (500, 'stable')
Architecture: i386 (i686)
Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/bash
Kernel: Linux 2.6.18
Locale: LANG=en_US, LC_CTYPE=en_US (charmap=ISO-8859-1)

As the above system information shows, Etch works perfectly on this
system, although it was not easy to install on a blank HD when the OS
was woody.

The installation that triggered this bug was attempted by building
a bootable USB memory stick (boot.img.gz (downloaded today) +
debian-testing-i386-netinst.iso) to install lenny on a new blank HD.

Attempted work-arounds.

As can be seen for the output of lswh (done from Etch and appended
below), this laptop has lots of built-in hardware. In addition to
the suggested temporary options (noapic, nolapic, acpi=off, irqpoll)
and hw-detect/start_pcmcia=false, I have excluded all the i/o
addresses that are likely to cause a problem: the pcmcia system,
the firewire port, the wireless adapter (ipw2100), the AC97 sound
system and the modem.

Obviously, since this is a net install, the network card (that in
Etch uses the b44 driver just fine) is mandatory.

Immediately after the "network hardware detection" is apparently
complete, the screen goes dark, the right 2 LEDs next to the power
button flash at 1 second interval and the system totally freezes.
Holding the power button for about 10 seconds is necessary to shut
down the machine.

I'd be glad to run specific tests if asked. Any other suggestions
of work-arounds welcome.

Output of lshw follows:

I have a virtualbox virtual machine with a 2.00GB disk (2GiB, actually) in
which I have failed to install lenny using
http://cdimage.debian.org/cdimage/lenny_di_rc1/i386/iso-cd/debian-testing-i386-netinst.iso
because I get the error screen that I attach when I assign
the mount points to the previously existant partitions.

The disk was partitioned with cfdisk using the sequence of commands "logical
partition - size 200 - at the end - another logical - size 1000 - at
the end" so that I got this partition table:

# fdisk -lu

/dev/hda6 3803247 4194287 195520+ 82 Linux swap / Solaris

When performing an expert install, in the "Partition disks" step, I selected
"Partitioning method: Manual", / at partition #5, swap at partition #6.
After the confirmation question my partitions had changed to:

Disk /dev/hda: 2147 MB, 2147483648 bytes
16 heads, 63 sectors/track, 4161 cylinders, total 4194304 sectors

/dev/hda6 3803247 4194287 195520+ 82 Linux swap / Solaris

If I try to reinstall with this new partition table the error happens again.

This might be an example of the #440446 bug

Package: debian-installer (Lenny/Stable)

I'd like to see dmsetup become a requirement for MD and LVM installer
packages. LVM or MD in stripe mode should report, through dmsetup,
parameters for tuning file systems like XFS when they are built on top
of striped media.

mkfs.xfs calls dmsetup as a system call and parses the output. I am
not sure if other file systems auto-tune based on the target.

Hi,

thank you for submitting bug reports concering debian-installer, much
appreciated.

I read through all the bugs mentioned here (and I'm sure they were read by
several people at the time they were submitted) and am closing them now as/if
- they (finally) indicated success and/or
- I know from first hand experience that the functionality is working in
Wheezy and/or
- they only contained very little information and/or
- they contained user errors and/or
- they have been from a development phase where things were not stable and/or
- they are very old and/or
- they are wishlist but rather special + exotic and not have been acted on for
years. (See http://blog.liw.fi/posts/wishlist-bugs/ why it's often useful to
close wishlist bugs.)

If I've closed a bug incorrectly please do reply (it's easy to reopen and I'll
do if requested) or just file a new one - thats often better, as the bug log
will be clearer and shorter and not contain cruft.

cheers,
Holger

When the user presses Control-Alt-Delete / kbrequest, there should be an
indication that the system is being rebooted.

Currently, nothing occurs. Interaction with the installer continues right up
until the screen goes black...

I'm not sure I get what you are doing: what self made iso image are you coping
onto which official image?

thanks. I've reassigned it to the proper package now :)
