Bug#316189: lomount will be included in Xen from now on

2005-10-06 Thread Asheesh Laroia
According to
http://lists.xensource.com/archives/html/xen-changelog/2005-07/msg00172.html
, Xen will bundle lomount in their releases. So this program should not
be packaged from the www.dad-answers.com; instead, it should be taken from
the Xen source tree where it's going to be updated.

I suggest that the bug be reassigned to the Xen package; I'm CC:ing Xen's
maintainer for that reason. I don't know if lomount comes with the Debian
xen package, or if it should be included in some xen-utils package, or
what.

Bug#299122: totem: snd_intel8x0m is not installed by default in etch

2005-10-06 Thread Michael Gilbert
Package: totem
Version: 1.0.4-1
Followup-For: Bug #299122

i just did a clean etch debian-installer installation. it appears that the
snd_intel8x0m kernel driver is no longer loaded into the kernel as a default
part of the installation any more. this means that totem works without
blacklisting snd_intel8x0m on a new install. i even tried modprobing
snd_intel8x0m into the kernel. totem works under this scenario. i don't know
what has been fixed, but it works like a charm now. you can close this bug if
you like.

Bug#316212: netapplet: Ubuntu has a fix for this

2005-10-06 Thread Mike Paul
Package: netapplet
Version: 1.0.0-1
Followup-For: Bug #316212

Ubuntu Breezy seems to have resolved this bug already; they have a
netapplet package which is built against libiw28.

The Ubuntu diff can be found at

http://people.ubuntu.com/~scott/patches/netapplet/netapplet_1.0.0-1ubuntu4.patch
The last two hunks, which create debian/patches/01_newlibiw.patch and
modify debian/rules to apply it, are the fix. I've successfully built
and used netapplet on a current Debian sid laptop, using libiw28, by
applying this patch.

Bug#331568: ifp-line-libifp: weird char in filename blocks even ifp format

Here's what's happening: as part of the self-test procedure, libifp
attempts to list the main directory.. which it should be able to do
unless the filesystem is corrupt.. and you could fix that by formatting
the filesystem, except libifp can't because it selftest fails.

As a work-around, you can use the older ifpline utility (which doesn't
self-test), or hack my code to not run the selftest.

I'll have time this weekend to do this, as well as fix the human
readable feature request, and package 1.0.0.2. This package hasn't been
getting nearly enough of my attention lately...

Bug#332383: a2ps: 'pdiff' docs and help are vague about output

2005-10-06 Thread A Costa
Package: a2ps
Version: 1:4.13b-5
Severity: normal

Problem: while browsing utils in 'dwww', I read about 'pdiff', did a
test run, and was surprised that it sent four pages of output to the
printer. Luckily the printer was off.

Cause of surprise: vague docs.

Details:

% whatis pdiff
pdiff (1)- produce a pretty comparison between files

The verb 'produce' does not clearly distinguish that output goes
to the printer.

The man page says:

% man pdiff | grep -nA 2 DESC
Reformatting pdiff(1), please wait...
11:DESCRIPTION
12- Pretty print the differences between FILE1 and FILE2.
13-

The verb 'print' may mean send to standard output. It's common
usage, as per these descriptions of common utils, none of which
require a printer:

% whatis wc whoami uname seq
wc (1) - print the number of newlines, words, and bytes in
files
whoami (1) - print effective userid
uname (1)- print system information
seq (1) - print a sequence of numbers

The 'pdiff' man page refers the user to a more thorough info page, but
that info page has only the same text as the man page, right down to
needlessly referring to a more thorough info page.

The command line help is also the same text as the man page description:

% pdiff --help | head -n 2
Usage: pdiff FILE1 FILE2 [-- A2PS-OPTIONS...]
Pretty print the differences between FILE1 and FILE2.

Hope this helps...

Attached is the first draft of a patch that should allow preseeding
MD5 hash paasswords for both the root and the first created user
 passwords.

Testing this is a little bit tricky because the relevant code actually
runs only when calling dpkg-reconfigure passwd. Also, when run on a
live system, where root already has a password, it does nothing.

The key is emptying the root password before manually running a modified
passwd.config script where the test about $1 being reconfigure is
removed.

See attached test script which is such a modified version.

The attached set script allow to set the root password hash to a
hash corresponding to r00tme.

The similar code for the user password preseeding is NOT included in
this test. Actually, testing this is even more tricky on a live system
because the script first test about the presence of an existing
unprivileged user and only proposes a user creation when such a user
does not exist.

Bug#47467: #47467 to be closed by PAMification of chfn and chsh?

2005-10-06 Thread Christian Perrier
Tomasz,

In http://bugs.debian.org/47467, the bug submitter requests that chfn
and chsh allow working on NIS accounts.

As far as I understand, this should *now* be possible because these
utilities are PAMified. Could you confirm (I know you're using a
NIS setup, so this should be easy to test for you) ?

Bug#332297: postgresql-common: hooks for restarting dependent apps

2005-10-06 Thread Martin Pitt
Hi Norbert!

Norbert Kiesel [2005-10-05 10:34 -0700]:
it would be nice if there where some hooks for adding actions needed for
dependant apps for start and stop of postgresql. Example: I always
have to issue a nagios restart manually after postgresql was restarted
because nagios hangs if the DB went down while it was connected.

This sounds indeed interesting.

Not sure how fancy that should be. Perhaps a simple run-parts dir
--arg=start|stop|restart would do the trick already. I'd think one
directory would be enough, as there should be no dependencies between
the dependant apps (i.e. it would be ok if the would be run in the same
 order for start, stop, restart).

I'd take the kernel approach and run stop with --reverse, so that the
usual habit of adding a priority prefix works. But if we do that, we
should not call the scripts with restart since it is not clear in
which order they should be called then. Any good ideas about this?

I could also send a patch for that if this would help.

Sure, that's always appreciated. :-)

Bug#329087: kernel-patch-vserver: be able to do chroot escape

2005-10-06 Thread Alexei Chetroi

  Hi,

Can confirm this. Works on debian kernel 2.4.27 with applied patch:
Virtual private servers and security contexts (vserver), from package
kernel-patch-ctx, version 2:1.2.10-1

  http://vserver.13thfloor.at/Stuff/rootesc.c
exploit works. I'm able to escape chroot and access filesystem at my
wish.

  Doesn't work on debian kernel 2.6.8-16 with kernel-patch-vserver 2.0

Yes.

Of course i found %n, but that would make a cdrom0, wouldn't it? Do i

As a work-around, you can use the older ifpline utility (which doesn't

I'll have time this weekend to do this, as well as fix the human

2005-10-06 Thread Matej Vela
Package: python-kinterbasdb

Severity: serious

python2.1-kinterbasdb and python2.2-kinterbasdb are no longer
installable due to the removal of python2.1-egenix-mxdatetime and
python2.2-egenix-mxdatetime. AFAIK, Python 2.1 and 2.2 will be
removed before etch, so these can be dropped as well.

Bug#332373: poll: protocol failure in circuit setup

2005-10-06 Thread Guus Sliepen
On Thu, Oct 06, 2005 at 06:15:43AM +0200, Marc Lehmann wrote:

When doing lots of connections in quick succession (say, one per
second), then, after a while, connections fails with:

poll: protocol failure in circuit setup

This is not due to the inetd rate limit (which I changed to 1000/minute
 for the shell service).

Replacing rsh-redone-server by rsh-server fixes this problem completely.

I'll have a look at the difference between rsh-server and
rsh-redone-server. I guess it is because rsh-redone-server lets some
sockets linger longer than rsh-server...

Sometimes I get this message in the syslog:

Oct 6 06:02:47 (none) in.rshd: Connection from cerebro on illegal port 0.

This is about the primary connection, not the stderr connection.

 Sometime this:

Oct 6 06:02:43 (none) in.rshd: Error while receiving stderr port number from
 cerebro: Success

That can only be if read() returns 0, which means the other end closed
the connection. I should indeed change the error message.

Sometimes none except the normal in.rsh connection from and pam messages.

Incidentaly, port 0 is a valid stderr port number in the protocol, so this
 should be supported.

It accepts port 0 as a stderr port without errors, but will not set up a
socket in that case.

I will likely not be able to test this further, as the other
incompatibilities of rsh-redone finally forced me to uninstall it
everywhere, but the above should makme it possible at least to fix the
 stderr-port-is-0 bug.

Thanks for the bugreport. By the way, how many rsh connections per
second do you get? And if you run netstat, do you see sockets in
TIME_WAIT (or other _WAIT) states?

Bug#331651: Patch to fix Quelcm kernel 2.6.12 issue.

2005-10-06 Thread Devin Carraway
Hi David --

Thanks for looking into this. I'll try to give it a look over tomorrow or the
next day. I'm dubious that bypassing the mmap on a zero-length file is going
to be without consequences, but if used only for reading it needs to be
wrapped in length guards anyway and might work out.

But I don't know the Quelcom logic well enough to ensure this fix won't
break something else. Please check this.

Interesting, this means that d-i somehow believes the machine is a mac,

that is, i doubt those machines have any kind of usb available.

Why wasn't this information sent to the installation report where it

Because at the time i wrote that email, the installation report hadn't made it

Bug#332396: RFP: packeth -- ethernet packet generator

2005-10-06 Thread W. Borgert
Package: wnpp
Severity: wishlist

Package name: packeth
Version : 1.3
Upstream Author : Miha Jemec [EMAIL PROTECTED]
URL : http://packeth.sourceforge.net/
License : GPL
Description : ethernet packet generator

From the web page:

packETH is a Linux GUI packet generator tool for ethernet. It
allows you to create and send any possible packet or sequence of
packets on the ethernet.

Features:

  * you can create and send any ethernet packet. Supported
protocols:
o ethernet II, ethernet 802.3, 802.1q, QinQ
o ARP, IPv4, user defined network layer payload
o UDP, TCP, ICMP, IGMP, user defined transport layer payload
o RTP (payload with options to send sin wave of any
  frequency for G.711)
  * sending sequence of packets
o delay between packets, number of packets to send
o sending with max speed, approaching the teoretical boundary
o change parameters while sending (change IP mac address,
UDP payload, 2 user defined bytes, etc.)
  * saving configuration to a text file and load from it

Note to the packager: packETH seems to use GTK 1.2 - it would be
worthwhile to port it to GTK 2, so that Debian can drop GTK 1.2.

Run with --doc to read documentation as a UNIX man(1) page.

This works, so there must be some internal manpage representation in the

Bug#332400: lintian: install-menu and su-to-root moved to /usr/bin

2005-10-06 Thread Bill Allombert
Package: lintian
Version: 1.23.12
Severity: wishlist

Dear Lintian maintainers,
As part of Stage 2 menu transition (to be announced in d-d-a),
menu-methods should now use
#! /usr/bin/install-menu
instead of
#! /usr/sbin/install-menu

So the check wrong-path-for-install-menu needs to be updated.

The check wrong-path-for-install-fvwmgenmenu is still there while
install-fvwmgenmenu is not shipped in Sarge, and woody shipped with a
dummy version.

Also su-to-root should be used without the /usr/sbin/ prefix anymore
(it is now in the path), so the check su-to-root-without-usr-sbin
should be reverted (to su-to-root-with-usr-sbin).

Cheers,

Package: moinmoin-common
Severity: wishlist

Hi

This are the steps to make run moin with mod_python/apache2
aptitude -R install libapache2-mod-python2.3 moinmoin-common python2.3-moinmoin

and add at your convenience the following guide lines to
/usr/share/doc/moinmoin-common/README.Debian

Example: B single wiki with mod_python/Apache2
--

 1) Create and populate /var/www/mywiki
# mkdir /var/www/mywiki
# cp -r /usr/share/moin/data /usr/share/moin/underlay
/usr/share/moin/server/moin.cgi /var/www/mywiki

 2) Pass on the wiki to Apache:
# chown -R www-data: /var/www/mywiki

 3) Configure Apache 2:
Add the following lines to /etc/apache2/conf.d/wiki:

 Alias /wiki/ /usr/share/moin/htdocs/

 Location /mywiki
  SetHandler python-program
  PythonPath ['/var/www/mywiki','/etc/moin/']+sys.path
  PythonHandler MoinMoin.request::RequestModPy.run
  PythonDebug On
 /Location

and reload apache

 4) Configure MoinMoin:
# edit /etc/moin/farmconfig.py
(add mywiki to wikis and customize general stuff)
# assure that:
url_prefix = '/wiki'
# cp /etc/moin/moinmaster.py /etc/moin/mywiki.py
# edit /etc/moin/mywiki.py
(Customize to your liking...)

 5) Enjoy your new wiki at http://your.site/mywiki/

Bug#329600: libnet-dns-perl: Bug in Net::DNS typesbyval() -- fixed upstream

2005-10-06 Thread Andrew Stribblehill
Package: libnet-dns-perl
Version: bug in Net::DNS typesbyval() fixed upstream
Followup-For: Bug #329600

The typesbyval() function is supposed to check that its argument is an
integer but it chokes on -- it passes the first die test but the
0 gets stripped away a couple of lines down, so it fails the second test
with Argument isn't numeric in numeric gt () at
/usr/lib/perl5/Net/DNS.pm line 167.

This is a follow-up to New upstream version because I've confirmed
that it's fixed upstream.

Bug#332403: Catalan update

2005-10-06 Thread Jordi Mallach
Package: gnome-libs
Severity: wishlist
Tags: l10n

Hey Thomas,

This is one of the things I had in my queue for a GNOME team upload of
gnome-libs, and wanted to do just before the package was orphaned.

The orphaning was done a bit before I expected it, so I hope you can
include this Catalan update.

The current Catalan file is old and includes very non-standard
translations. I have updated and completed it so the last GNOME 1 apps
(specially Gnucash) look a bit more integrated in a Catalan desktop.

Many thanks in advance,
Jordi

Bug#308946: Me too

2005-10-06 Thread Damyan Ivanov
Hi,

I have a similar problem with another controller - AOC-2020SA (with Adaptec
printer on the board), which is a Zero-Channel RAID controller working with the
onboard Marvel MV88SX6041 SATA controller.

Tested with Debian kernels:
2.6.12-1-amd64-k8-smp ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) (gcc version 4.0.2 (Debian
4.0.1-9)) #1
SMP Wed Sep 28 02:57:49 CEST 2005
2.6.8-11-amd64-k8-smp ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) (gcc version 3.4.4
20050314 (prerelease) (Debian 3.4.3-13))
#1 SMP Wed Jun 1 00:01:27 CEST 2005

The symptom is very strange.

First, if any of ide_generic, am74xx drivers is loaded (to be able to access
the DVD via the embedded AMD74xx IDE controller) aacraid hangs on high load
with messages:
Oct 4 16:20:23 kovo kernel: aacraid: Host adapter reset request. SCSI hang ?
Oct 4 16:20:23 kovo kernel: aacraid: Host adapter appears dead
Oct 4 16:20:23 kovo kernel: scsi: Device offlined - not ready after error
recovery: host 0 channel 0 id 0 lun 0

After booting without loading any IDE module, the array seems stable, but gives
 wrong data.

I copied a 7G file on the array and ran md5sum for it several times and got
different (and wrong) result each time.

If I copy a 1.5G file via scp and immediatelly after the copy chech its md5 sum
- it is correct, but this is becuase the system has 2G of memory and 1.5G file
can easyly fit in the cache. If after siccessfully md5sum-chech of this 1.5G
file I try (unsuccessfuly) to check the 7G file, then the 1.5G file fails the
check again (I suppose, because it is removed from cache and read from the
array again).

Here's sample calculating small/big files sha1sum three times

$ for i in 1 2 3 ; do echo --; sha1sum big.gz; sha1sum big; done

remove the dependency (recommendation) on xfs-xtt.

Surely this program should be trying to exec /usr/bin/ssh-askpass?

With the official 1:4.2p1-4 package for i386:

  strings /usr/bin/ssh-add | grep libexec

you don't have a local version of ssh-add installed elsewhere?

Is there a good reason why I should change the build dependencies to this
instead of the simple libreadline-dev which I have at the moment? apcalc
is very likely to build properly with any previous and future version of
libreadline, so I don't understand why I should explicitly list
libreadline5-dev.

It needs to be rebuilt against libreadline5 of course, which will happen
RSN.

Bug#332408: mediawiki: Multiple vulnerabilities in Mediawiki

2005-10-06 Thread Moritz Muehlenhoff
Package: mediawiki
Severity: grave
Tags: security
Justification: user security hole

1.4.11 fixes two security problems:

CAN-2005-3167:
Incomplete blacklist vulnerability in MediaWiki before 1.4.11 does not
properly remove certain CSS inputs (HTML inline style attributes) that
are processed as active content by Internet Explorer, which allows remote
attackers to conduct cross-site scripting (XSS) attacks.

CAN-2005-3166:
Unspecified vulnerability in edit submission handling for MediaWiki
1.4.x before 1.4.10 and 1.3.x before 1.3.16 allows remote attackers to
cause a denial of service (corruption of the previous submission) via a
crafted URL.

Please mention these CVE assignments when you provide a fixed package.

think that fvwm should switch to latest gdk-imlib11.

There are patches available against the 6.8.99.9 snapshots for basic tv
out on a range of Radeon cards. More information and the patches are at
http://megahurts.dk/rune/tv_output.html These unfortunately are unable
currently to be integrated into upstream, as they are licensed under the
GPL, but I think should be ok for Debian to use the patches in it's xorg
packages.

Bug#328365: Ubuntu patch for texinfo (CAN-2005-3011)

2005-10-06 Thread Martin Pitt
Hi!

Since the previously proposed patch is very intrusive and not really
appropriate for a security update, I created my own minimal patch:

  http://patches.ubuntu.com/patches/texinfo.CAN-2005-3011.diff

It basically uses the same strategy without touching other code parts.

Maybe it is useful for somebody.

Thanks,

Martin

Please find attached the french debconf templates update, proofread by the
 debian-l10n-french mailing list contributors.

This file should be put as debian/po/fr.po in your package build tree.

This is of course not the debconf templates, but the manpages
translation.
Please do NOT include this translation today, there is a lot of problems
to solve (Sylvain has been a little bit quick for this translation). You
should receive a new updated translation in a few days.

Bug#332414: package kicks out xserver-xfree86 and leaves system without any xserver

2005-10-06 Thread Adrian Davey

Package: xserver-common
Version: 6.8.2.dfsg.1-8
Severity: Normal

When upgrading xserver-common to 6.8.2.dfsg.1-8 it conflicts with
xserver-xfree86, introduced as a result of bug #318425, which is all
fine but it does leave /etc/X11/X linking to /bin/true and no xserver on
the system. I don't think this is quite the expected behavior, if the
xserver-xfree86 is to be removed from the system surely the package
should be replaced with an xserver package, most likely xserver-xorg?

Adrian

the test above so that it leads to the error, installing tetex-base and
tetex-bin first. Then, before installing tetex-extra, please do the
 following:

 - remove /var/lib/texmf/web2c/updmap.log just to make sure we get the
   right one

Hmm, this file is not there and it does not get created...

Uh, that might point to the actual reason: It might be that the updmap
run from the postinst creates its files at a different place. What is
still unclear is why it does so. Could it be that you use different
methods of gaining root rights for installing packages on the one hand,
and for manually running updmap on the other?

Do you have dlocate installed? If yes, please send us the output of

dlocate updmap.log
dlocate updmap.cfg

Furthermore, please send us the output of the following commands:

kpsewhich --expand-var='$VARTEXMF'
kpsewhich --expand-var='$TEXMF'

Please execute them after getting root rights the same way you do it for
apt-get (or both ways if there are two different ones).

 I also changed the verboseMsg() { $verbose  echo ${1+$@} ; } by removing
 the
redirection to STDERR, since the the /var/lib/dpkg/info/tetex-extra.postinst
 script
redirects STDERR into a file which it deletes immediately.

Oh, yes, I forgot this. If the output of the commands above doesn't
help us, we'll have to do more complicated things to get the postinst
changed.

Messages older than 30 days in my Spam directory are deleted, but

What happens if you try:

Is this bug about the fact that the MPL isn't free, or about the fact that
the copyright file doesn't mention the GPL?

The latter issue isn't RC; all of the information in the copyright file is
correct TTBOMK, the file just fails to mention that (the majority of) the
source is also available under a different, more permissive set of rights.
However, I don't see any reason *not* to fix that bug, either.

The former issue is RC, but I consider the etch-ignore tag appropriate with
the understanding that upstream is actively working on getting all of the
code formally relicensed. If this were to change, or if it should become
clear than some portion of the code will *not* be relicensed, then that is
an issue that cannot be ignored for etch.

Bug#331400: aptitude segfaults during dist-upgrade

Daniel Burrows wrote:

I think a backtrace really would help, since that would give me a clue

I'm now able to trigger it by starting aptitude without any arguments, selecting
a version of a package that breaks something, pressing 'g' to bring up the
solutions dialog, and attempting to apply the first solution that I get given.

Tried recompiling aptitude with CXXFLAGS=-O0 -g set in order to get rid of the
optimizing away that was hiding some of the information about the program stack,
and got the attached stack trace screenshot. Hopefully it'll be of a bit more use...

Bug#332264: tex-common: permission-handling of ls-R files is one-way

2005-10-06 Thread Frank Küster
Norbert Preining [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

But stop, well, isn't this the whole point of it???

Asume someone managed xyz-ls-R with debconf.
 Then changes permissions/owner.
Then realizes that he has to reconfigure tex-common.
Then he calls dpkg-reconfigure -plow tex-common
What should tex-common do? Change permission/owner?

I would say no. I guess we need more discussion here.

To me it seems there are two issues here. The first is that our dialog
gives the impression that we do not simply *add* permissions, but
*remove* as well. If we want to stick to only adding, at least we must
check them before and only offer the choice to add if there is anything
to add. Otherwise we should implement the removal.

The second is local changes must be preserved. This means:

- in noninteractive mode, we should not make any changes upon upgrade,
only upon first installation (check for the second argument to the
  config script).

- in interactive mode, or when called by dpkg-reconfigure (no way to
discriminate these two situations), we must be careful.

  a) If all possibly managed ls-R files have the same permissions and
group ownership, we can simply ask our question and add or remove
permissions, and change groupship according to the answer. If the
owning group is not users, we should change the default to the
 other name.

  b) If the permissions are different, but look just as we would
generate them - that is: all ls-R files that are 664 have the same
owning group, all ls-R files that are 644 also belong to one group
(which might be the same or different than for the 664 files) -
then it is also easy to handle this: We simply adjust our settings
according to the existing situation, ask the question and act
 accordingly.

  c) However, if ls-R files of the same permission kind have different
group ownership, or if there are ls-R files that are neither 664
nor 644, we are in trouble.

To me it seems as if this shouldn't be too hard to implement (although I
didn't even look at your first, now reverted change, and don't want to
press you to anything). We would have one question for tha a and b
cases, and an informational message in the c case.

Furthermore, LOCALTEXMF's ls-R file is only managed if it resides in
/var/lib/texmf. Since there was no such symlink in older versions, we
should either provide a transition (is fiddling with /usr/local allowed
in maintainer scripts?), or at least document it.

This has to be discussed, too.

After reading Section 9.1.2 of the Policy, I think that we may not
create files below /usr/local at all (only directories). Therefore we
should remove the link from the package, and remove localtexmf from the
debconf template.

What the others think?

Regards, Frank

2005-10-06 Thread Christophe Combelles
Package: ardour-gtk
Severity: important

Ardour debian package has currently no l10n files included.
This was maybe due to ardour's bug not showing translation?

ardour version 0.99 has been released on 24/09/2005,
and it fixes the i18n bug.

po files should/could now be included in the package

thanks
