Bug#316189: lomount will be included in Xen from now on
According to http://lists.xensource.com/archives/html/xen-changelog/2005-07/msg00172.html , Xen will bundle lomount in their releases. So this program should not be packaged from the www.dad-answers.com; instead, it should be taken from the Xen source tree where it's going to be updated. I suggest that the bug be reassigned to the Xen package; I'm CC:ing Xen's maintainer for that reason. I don't know if lomount comes with the Debian xen package, or if it should be included in some xen-utils package, or what. -- Asheesh. -- QOTD: I thought I saw a unicorn on the way over, but it was just a horse with one of the horns broken off. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Package: totem Version: 1.0.4-1 Followup-For: Bug #299122 i just did a clean etch debian-installer installation. it appears that the snd_intel8x0m kernel driver is no longer loaded into the kernel as a default part of the installation any more. this means that totem works without blacklisting snd_intel8x0m on a new install. i even tried modprobing snd_intel8x0m into the kernel. totem works under this scenario. i don't know what has been fixed, but it works like a charm now. you can close this bug if you like. best regards, mike gilbert -- System Information: Debian Release: testing/unstable APT prefers testing APT policy: (500, 'testing') Architecture: i386 (i686) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/bash Kernel: Linux 2.6.12-1-686 Locale: LANG=en_US, LC_CTYPE=en_US (charmap=ISO-8859-1) Versions of packages totem depends on: ii totem-xine1.0.4-1A simple media player for the Gnom totem recommends no packages. -- no debconf information -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#331568: ifp-line-libifp: weird char in filename blocks even ifp format
On Wed, 2005-10-05 at 22:10 -0400, Geoff Oakham wrote: That's an interesting case; thanks for discovering and reporting it! Here's what's happening: as part of the self-test procedure, libifp attempts to list the main directory.. which it should be able to do unless the filesystem is corrupt.. and you could fix that by formatting the filesystem, except libifp can't because it selftest fails. As a work-around, you can use the older ifpline utility (which doesn't self-test), or hack my code to not run the selftest. Bug#275343: [Pkg-shadow-devel] Bug#304352: Patch to allow preseeding hashes for passwords (root and user) in passwd
Quoting Christian Perrier ([EMAIL PROTECTED]): tags 275343 patch tags 304343 patch merge 305352 275343 thanks Attached is the first draft of a patch that should allow preseeding MD5 hash paasswords for both the root and the first created user passwords. Testing this is a little bit tricky because the relevant code actually runs only when calling dpkg-reconfigure passwd. Also, when run on a live system, where root already has a password, it does nothing. The key is emptying the root password before manually running a modified passwd.config script where the test about $1 being reconfigure is removed. See attached test script which is such a modified version. The attached set script allow to set the root password hash to a hash corresponding to r00tme. The similar code for the user password preseeding is NOT included in this test. Actually, testing this is even more tricky on a live system because the script first test about the presence of an existing unprivileged user and only proposes a user creation when such a user does not exist. #!/bin/sh -e test -f /usr/share/debconf/confmodule || exit 0 # don't make assumptions about the umask umask 022 . /usr/share/debconf/confmodule db_capb backup # Remove this : not translatable and looks ugly in d-i process # db_title Password setup # Returns a true value if there seems to be a system user account. is_system_user () { # Assume NIS, or any uid from 1000 to 2, means there is a user. if grep -q '^+:' /etc/passwd || \ grep -q '^[^:]*:[^:]*:[1-9][0-9][0-9][0-9]:' /etc/passwd || \ grep -q '^[^:]*:[^:]*:[12][0-9][0-9][0-9][0-9]:' /etc/passwd; then return 0 else return 1 fi } # Returns a true value if root already has a password. root_password () { # Assume there is a root password if NIS is being used. if grep -q '^+:' /etc/passwd; then return 0 fi if [ -e /etc/shadow ] \ [ `grep ^root: /etc/shadow | cut -d : -f 2` ]; then return 0 fi if [ `grep ^root: /etc/passwd | cut -d : -f 2` ] \ [ `grep ^root: /etc/passwd | cut -d : -f 2` != 'x' ]; then return 0 fi return 1 } # Set a password, via chpasswd. # Use perl rather than echo, to avoid the password # showing in the process table. Bug#332297: postgresql-common: hooks for restarting dependent apps
Hi Norbert! Norbert Kiesel [2005-10-05 10:34 -0700]: it would be nice if there where some hooks for adding actions needed for dependant apps for start and stop of postgresql. Example: I always have to issue a nagios restart manually after postgresql was restarted because nagios hangs if the DB went down while it was connected. This sounds indeed interesting. Not sure how fancy that should be. Perhaps a simple run-parts dir --arg=start|stop|restart would do the trick already. I'd think one directory would be enough, as there should be no dependencies between the dependant apps (i.e. it would be ok if the would be run in the same order for start, stop, restart). I'd take the kernel approach and run stop with --reverse, so that the usual habit of adding a priority prefix works. But if we do that, we should not call the scripts with restart since it is not clear in which order they should be called then. Any good ideas about this? I could also send a patch for that if this would help. Sure, that's always appreciated. :-) Martin -- Martin Pitt http://www.piware.de Ubuntu Developer http://www.ubuntulinux.org Debian Developerhttp://www.debian.org -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. I'll have time this weekend to do this, as well as fix the human readable feature request, and package 1.0.0.2. This package hasn't been getting nearly enough of my attention lately... Bug#332373: poll: protocol failure in circuit setup
On Thu, Oct 06, 2005 at 06:15:43AM +0200, Marc Lehmann wrote: When doing lots of connections in quick succession (say, one per second), then, after a while, connections fails with: poll: protocol failure in circuit setup This is not due to the inetd rate limit (which I changed to 1000/minute for the shell service). Replacing rsh-redone-server by rsh-server fixes this problem completely. I'll have a look at the difference between rsh-server and rsh-redone-server. I guess it is because rsh-redone-server lets some sockets linger longer than rsh-server... Sometimes I get this message in the syslog: Oct 6 06:02:47 (none) in.rshd: Connection from cerebro on illegal port 0. This is about the primary connection, not the stderr connection. Sometime this: Oct 6 06:02:43 (none) in.rshd: Error while receiving stderr port number from cerebro: Success That can only be if read() returns 0, which means the other end closed the connection. I should indeed change the error message. Sometimes none except the normal in.rsh connection from and pam messages. Incidentaly, port 0 is a valid stderr port number in the protocol, so this should be supported. It accepts port 0 as a stderr port without errors, but will not set up a socket in that case. I will likely not be able to test this further, as the other incompatibilities of rsh-redone finally forced me to uninstall it everywhere, but the above should makme it possible at least to fix the stderr-port-is-0 bug. Thanks for the bugreport. By the way, how many rsh connections per second do you get? And if you run netstat, do you see sockets in TIME_WAIT (or other _WAIT) states? -- Met vriendelijke groet / with kind regards, Guus Sliepen [EMAIL PROTECTED] signature.asc Description: Digital signature

Bug#331651: Patch to fix Quelcm kernel 2.6.12 issue.
Hi David -- Thanks for looking into this. I'll try to give it a look over tomorrow or the next day. I'm dubious that bypassing the mmap on a zero-length file is going to be without consequences, but if used only for reading it needs to be wrapped in length guards anyway and might work out. Bug#332400: lintian: install-menu and su-to-root moved to /usr/bin
Package: lintian Version: 1.23.12 Severity: wishlist Dear Lintian maintainers, As part of Stage 2 menu transition (to be announced in d-d-a), menu-methods should now use #! /usr/bin/install-menu instead of #! /usr/sbin/install-menu So the check wrong-path-for-install-menu needs to be updated. The check wrong-path-for-install-fvwmgenmenu is still there while install-fvwmgenmenu is not shipped in Sarge, and woody shipped with a dummy version. Also su-to-root should be used without the /usr/sbin/ prefix anymore (it is now in the path), so the check su-to-root-without-usr-sbin should be reverted (to su-to-root-with-usr-sbin). Bug#332403: Catalan update

I copied a 7G file on the array and ran md5sum for it several times and got different (and wrong) result each time. If I copy a 1.5G file via scp and immediatelly after the copy chech its md5 sum - it is correct, but this is becuase the system has 2G of memory and 1.5G file can easyly fit in the cache. Could it be that you use different methods of gaining root rights for installing packages on the one hand, and for manually running updmap on the other? Do you have dlocate installed? I also changed the verboseMsg() { $verbose echo ${1+$@} ; } by removing the redirection to STDERR, since the the /var/lib/dpkg/info/tetex-extra.postinst script redirects STDERR into a file which it deletes immediately. Bug#330295: Please downgrade this

On Wed, Oct 05, 2005 at 02:07:32PM -0700, Steve Langasek wrote: Is this bug about the fact that the MPL isn't free, or about the fact that the copyright file doesn't mention the GPL? The latter issue isn't RC; all of the information in the copyright file is correct TTBOMK, the file just fails to mention that (the majority of) the source is also available under a different, more permissive set of rights. However, I don't see any reason *not* to fix that bug, either. The former issue is RC, but I consider the etch-ignore tag appropriate with the understanding that upstream is actively working on getting all of the code formally relicensed. If this were to change, or if it should become clear than some portion of the code will *not* be relicensed, then that is an issue that cannot be ignored for etch. - Alexander p.s. please take care that the bug is listed as To: or CC: when replying to this mail (e.g. /reply-all/). -- GPG messages preferred. | .''`. ** Debian GNU/Linux ** Alexander Sack| : :' : The universal [EMAIL PROTECTED] | `. `' Operating System http://www.asoftsite.org | `-http://www.debian.org/ -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#331400: aptitude segfaults during dist-upgrade
Daniel Burrows wrote: I think a backtrace really would help, since that would give me a clue which widget is being hauled out of its grave...I'll try some more combinations of packages and see if I can reproduce it here, too. I'm now able to trigger it by starting aptitude without any arguments, selecting a version of a package that breaks something, pressing 'g' to bring up the solutions dialog, and attempting to apply the first solution that I get given. Tried recompiling aptitude with CXXFLAGS=-O0 -g set in order to get rid of the optimizing away that was hiding some of the information about the program stack, and got the attached stack trace screenshot. Bug#332264: tex-common: permission-handling of ls-R files is one-way
Norbert Preining [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: But stop, well, isn't this the whole point of it??? Asume someone managed xyz-ls-R with debconf. Then changes permissions/owner. Then realizes that he has to reconfigure tex-common. Then he calls dpkg-reconfigure -plow tex-common What should tex-common do? Change permission/owner? I would say no. I guess we need more discussion here. To me it seems there are two issues here. The first is that our dialog gives the impression that we do not simply *add* permissions, but *remove* as well. If we want to stick to only adding, at least we must check them before and only offer the choice to add if there is anything to add. Otherwise we should implement the removal. The second is local changes must be preserved. This means: - in noninteractive mode, we should not make any changes upon upgrade, only upon first installation (check for the second argument to the config script). - in interactive mode, or when called by dpkg-reconfigure (no way to discriminate these two situations), we must be careful. a) If all possibly managed ls-R files have the same permissions and group ownership, we can simply ask our question and add or remove permissions, and change groupship according to the answer. If the owning group is not users, we should change the default to the other name. b) If the permissions are different, but look just as we would generate them - that is: all ls-R files that are 664 have the same owning group, all ls-R files that are 644 also belong to one group (which might be the same or different than for the 664 files) - then it is also easy to handle this: We simply adjust our settings according to the existing situation, ask the question and act accordingly. c) However, if ls-R files of the same permission kind have different group ownership, or if there are ls-R files that are neither 664 nor 644, we are in trouble. To me it seems as if this shouldn't be too hard to implement (although I didn't even look at your first, now reverted change, and don't want to press you to anything). We would have one question for tha a and b cases, and an informational message in the c case. Furthermore, LOCALTEXMF's ls-R file is only managed if it resides in /var/lib/texmf. Since there was no such symlink in older versions, we should either provide a transition (is fiddling with /usr/local allowed in maintainer scripts?), or at least document it. This has to be discussed, too. After reading Section 9.1.2 of the Policy, I think that we may not create files below /usr/local at all (only directories). Therefore we should remove the link from the package, and remove localtexmf from the debconf template. What the others think? Regards, Frank -- Frank Küster Inst. f. Biochemie der Univ.
