almost all doc-base clients(dhelp, dwww, doc-central) can't deal with
html files outside of /usr/share/doc directory. And some package (e.g.
abiword-help 2.4.1-1) does not put document under this directory, how
about add a policy about the directory of html files?

However it is unrealistic to assume that a separate source package
must be downloaded and unfolded in order to find out the reason why
program fails to start by looking into src/exitcode.h

IMPROVEMENT:

The manual page should list all the exit codes of the program and kept
up to date if they change.

BETTER:

Add option --verbose to distcc which would announce the exitcode and
description of the failure in plain text.

In case of failure, the set -e used previously terminates the command
and user does not get eny indictation in case of failure. This causes
assuming that the command succeeded:

only after couple of hours or days he may suspect that the service is not
up. Perhaps the code could be improved to that a message is displayed
in case of error. Something like (untested):

Looks like $part is undefined for this nasty message.  A simple hack like next 
unless defined $part is no good, as the processing doesn't finish.  

Attaching the files that cause the choke, in sendmail qf/df format.  

The impact of this bug is quite severe.  The batch will continuously fail, 
causing it to be continuously picked up by the next available MailScanner 
process.  On a high volume server, this can cause the queue to back up 
considerably.  

Mailscanner is configured to use sendmail.  First process queues to 
/var/spool/mqueue.in, second process delivers from /var/spool/mqueue.out

  The conversion script does sort the file in correct order but if the
  user twiddles with it things may get run in incorrect order (e.g.
  put networking at the end and see how many daemons fail to start).
 
 This is an ugly situation, but I don't think that it justifies a
 critical bug, because it's a human mistake (okay, based on a wrong
 man page, which I will fix soon).  But if I edit a file, with
 ascending IDs in the first column, I usually order them by hand before
 saving the file.  I think that most people will do so, which explains
 why nobody else found this problem in the documentation before.
 
Well I'm a person that reordered the file so I could see the boot order. I put 
all the S level entries at the top, then the 2345 entries, then the 06 
entries. I even split lines to separate out the start and stop actions. What 
I ended up with was a list that matched the startup and shutdown order.

As soon as I started adding and upgrading stuff it all went wrong, lots of 
stuff was added to the S section at the start which put it before the 2345 
section. I had to fix it up after every apt-get upgrade.

In short I think this is release critical since it broke my system a number of 
times.

Now the good news:

  All you have to do is replace xxx  $configfile with sort
  $configfile | xxx. Actually, you can't since sort is in /usr/bin,
  you'll have to do a sort with bash functions.
 
 I don't have a sh function available for sorting at the moment and I'm
 not sure whether I can accept the speed loss of such a function.

Bug#333683: O: octave-statdataml, r-cran-statdataml, and r-cran-xml

Some time ago I packaged StatDataML (http://www.omegahat.org/StatDataML/)
for Debian hoping that it would be a solution for communicating data between
Octave and R.  The current version of the statdataml package (1.0.9) still
has me as maintainer, although I already put the sources in the SVN
repository of the Debain Octave Group (http://pkg-octave.alioth.debian.org).

In the meanwhile, I started using exclusively HDF5 for transferring data
between Octave and R and I think this is a superior approach, not to mention
the fact that I am now also able to use Perl to read/write the data files.

The statdataml source package generates two binary packages:
octave-statdataml and r-cran-statdataml.  This last one depends on
r-cran-xml, which I also packaged for Debian.

Now, the scoops:

1) Both r-cran-statdataml and r-cran-xml have been made available by the
   Debian BioCondutor Group (http://pkg-bioc.alioth.debian.org/).  BTW, the
   versions present in their apt-getable repository
   (http://public.pzr.uni-rostock.de/~moeller/mirror/) are more recent than
   those packaged by me.

2) The newest upstream version of StatDataML 1.0-10
   (http://cran.r-project.org/src/contrib/Descriptions/StatDataML.html) even
   does not contain the Octave part which was present in 1.0-9.

3) The Octave part of StatDataML 1.0-9 even does work correctly with g++
   4.0.  I do not know whether the problems comes really from octave 2.1.71,
   from libxml2 in sid, from the compiler, or from a combination of all
   those.  I do not have the time/interest in debugging this problem.

4) A bug report has been recently filed against r-cran-xml
   (http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=330622).  This is an
   upstream problem and I even do not know whether the most recent upstream
   version of the fixes it.  (Again, my time/interest on this is very
   scarce).

Under all this circumstances, I am abandoning the StatDataML packages as
well as r-cran-xml.  This orphaning bug report against wnpp is the first
step before asking for removal of the packages from the FTP archive.

My suggestion: add a build-conflicts against libstdc++3

OOPS, I hit ctrl-enter before I typed in the good news part.


Now the good news:
  All you have to do is replace xxx  $configfile with sort
  $configfile | xxx. Actually, you can't since sort is in /usr/bin,
  you'll have to do a sort with bash functions.

 I don't have a sh function available for sorting at the moment and I'm
 not sure whether I can accept the speed loss of such a function.

I just realized you don't need a sort, the entries are numeric from 00 to 99 
so you just need something like this

scripts=`grep $runlevel_pattern /etc/runlevel.conf`
for x in 0 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9
do
  for y in 0 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9
  do
for script in $scripts

Everything is done in the shell so it will be fast. (1.5 seconds for 43 
entries in run level 3 with 1 GHz VIA C3-2 processor).

The inner loop could also be changed to start stuff in parallel like the 
sysv-rc package is doing except faster since they use disk access to sort.

building with or without --disable-spinlocks. From that I almost get
the impression that this has never worked at all...

I talked with upstream about this, maybe somebody finds a solution.

for the utnubu team, but also for people that want to maintain local
changes to debian packages this feature would be useful:

It should be possible to treat debian source package as upstream,
including support in svn-inject and svn-upgrade. If you have a look at 
http://svn.debian.org/wsvn/utnubu/packages/timer-applet/branches/ubuntu/?rev=0sc=0
You will notice branches labled ubuntu next to upstream. These contain
the ubuntu versions of the package on which we base our work. Corrently,
the tagging and changes merging is done manually, but automatical
support by svn-buildpackage would greatly ease the work for the utnubu
team.

What do you think? If you don't feel like implementing it, but would
accept a patch, could you quickly outline the best way to do it, maybe
someone can do it for you.

Loads GRUB, whose menu.lst is setup to load sbm, as follows:

The memdisk and sbootmgr.dsk files are not present in the sbm package.  I think
it would be useful if they were generated in debian/rules.  This way I could
just install the package and point my hdd GRUB to the proper path, and get sbm
without having to grab a real floppy.

What seems to be happening is that mailgraph.cgi is outputting a lot of
data (an image) and then quits. According to the following page:

on Linux a POLLHUP is going to be sent to the other side of the pipe (the
web-server) instead of POLLIN if the application quits before the data is read.

The following is however implemented in fnord for CGI scripts:

DNS_UPDATE is tested against no in the vpnc-script script, instead of
$DNS_UPDATE

Hrm, actually, $DNS_UPDATE is set to  no, with the space before it.

Who sets DNS_UPDATE?  Is it in the /sbin/vpnc binary?  Why doesn't it
strip off the leading space?

So the bug is worked around by a test such as:
if [[ $DNS_UPDATE = *no ]] ; then


Furthermore, the networks routing loop should be:

-d seems to override any command line flags without notice.

That is very usefull for letting other udebs depend on this package, but 
not actually what I meant :-)

The udeb currently has:
Depends: libc-udeb, libdirectfb-0.9-22-udeb

What I meant was this could now be changed to:
Depends: libc-udeb, libdirectfb-0.9-22

I feel this is more in line with other udebs, but I'll leave it to you to 
decide if you want to change this or just close the bug again (or leave 
it open as a reminder for a later date).

(The depends for libc-udeb could also be changed to plain libc6 (for 
i386 at least), but it is probably easier to do that when you can switch 
to using ${shlibs:Depends} in the control file.)

I have no idea. I had xfce window manager installed around one year ago but it 
was buggy and did not work properly so I removed it. I can remember some 
applications popped up non-stop even though I repeteadly closed their 
windows. I did not check further.

Other distros have fixed this but none have pushed the fix upstream. I
have attached Fedora/RedHat's patch against 4.0.7 from the source rpm
at,

The patch does more than just add '-r', it adds '-M' (not in the LSB) and maybe 
other stuff.

I don't think Debian should make this change until upstream has accepted it. So 
consider this a wishlist bug to help get the change upstream so Debian can use 
it too.

If adduser was to be the culprit, it should have broken the installation of 
logcheck (the stable version) also.

 Obviously there is some difference between the installation if it now

I can still reproduce it with the versions present in testing and unstable 
branch. I needed logcheck badly and the one in sarge works fine so I used 
that.
So if the version in sarge works and the versions in testing and unstable 
don't work, it makes it clear that there's some change in the pre/post 
installation script of logcheck which is breaking, not adduser because the 
same adduser works with logcheck from stable.
