Bug#343686: debsums: checksums mismatch + bug #343048 again

2005-12-17 Thread LUK ShunTim
Package: linux-image-2.6.15-rc5-686
Version: 2.6.14+2.6.15-rc5-0experimental.1
Severity: critical
Justification: breaks the whole system

After installing linux-image-2.6.15-rc5-686 and rebooting, I got errors similar
to that reported in bug #343048, that is

quote
/bin/cat: /sys/block/hda/dev: No such file or directory
Waiting 1 seconds for /sys/block/hda/dev to show up
/bin/cat: /sys/block/hda/dev: No such file or directory
Waiting 2 seconds for /sys/block/hda/dev to show up

/quote

However, the strange thing is when I invoke reportbug to report it, I got these
bunch of checksum errors

Bug#329057: gnome-randr-applet: Inverted rotation selected automatically (and wrongfully)

Ok, thanks.

This should probably be sent upstream.

Yeah, not sure if upstream is active still though.

I'm talking specifically to *this* package. Konami has patented the
various game plays and game designs per se, additionally Konami is
actively enforcing their patents. Please read #301527.

As we talked a few days ago about the issue, Guerkan said to me that he
didn't found *any* patent claims by Konami in US at all, which is not
true. Therefore I had the impression he didn't check or queried wrong
the database.

If there are images that have been copied from some other game into this
package, that is a *copyright* issue, not a patent one.

As I said multiple times, this bug is *only* about patents, *not* about
copyright and/or trademarks, although people were still talking about
that within the bug.

However, Guerkan and I are looking through the patent claims. You may
give us some days and we will clear the situation, thank you.

Bug#343639: mysql-server-5.0: Key file corruption during shutdown

2005-12-17 Thread Olaf van der Spek

Hi,

Or is there any possibility to reproduce this table crash after
repairing the table once? This would clearly indicate a bug in MySQL.

I'll try, but since it's a 'production' system I can't experiment too much.

 See http://ftp.osuosl.org/pub/mysql/doc/refman/5.0/en/system.html for
an explanation of this option.

It says:
The only case in which you cannot use --skip-external-locking is ... if
you run myisamchk to check (not repair) a table without telling the
server to flush and lock the tables first.

Isn't that what's being done here?
AFAIK that script checks (not repairs) and I didn't see any code to
flush and lock tables.

BTW, sorry for the wrong from address in the bug report.

Bug#343691: Upgrade to 0.8.6g-3 overwrites /etc/cacti/debian.php will null values

2005-12-17 Thread Jesse Molina
Package: cacti
Version: 0.8.6g-3
Severity: grave
Justification: n

After the last upgrade of Cacti, the /etc/cacti/debian.php was replaced
with default/null values. This caused polling to stop and data for five
days was lost for my install.

During the upgrade, I recall being prompted about the new
dbconfig-common option. I selected n for No. However, the file was
cleared, rendering Cacti disfunctional. I didn't notice until today
that polling had stopped. I noticed when I saw an error message while
trying to review stats for the week.

I was able to reproduce the problem, after populating the proper values
into the /etc/cacti/debian.php file, I ran dpkg-reconfigure cacti again,
and selected no to the question;

Configure database for cacti with dbconfig-common? n

And, again, it overwrote the file and cleared values.

Expected result: Don't touch the config files if user says NO.

I didn't see anything obvious in /usr/share/doc/cacti about this issue.
Furthermore, the replacement of this vital config file was very silent.
That's not very nice.

Hopefully I didn't do anything wrong myself. Ask any questions needed
to clarify.

set in pbuilderrc, and overridden with --debemail.

But it's inherited from the environment by default. So if in the
default case the presence of the DEBEMAIL environment variable changes
the behavior of pbuilder, but it behaves wrongly (as was my case when I
was using pbuilder in the past: my .changes files were set to
Changed-By: [EMAIL PROTECTED] because DEBEMAIL held only an email), then
pbuilder ought to be fixed to use DEBFULLNAME/DEBEMAIL/EMAIL correctly.

I opened the bug against devscripts and pbuilder at the same time in
the hope that the maintainers would take a decision for a common format
 for these environment variables.

Right now, someone configuring his environment in the hope that it will
be reused across programs will be deceived by DEBEMAIL which has
different behaviors / expected formats across programs. All I did is
point at two programs with different behaviors.

We're using Sarge on our AMD64 systems with 32Bit-k7 Kernel and install
via FAI (So all workstations are configured exactly the same except some
printerconfig if they have a local printer)

We're having this problem too on this (and only this!) workstation. We could
 not
determine any differences to other workstations.

We even reinstalled it from scratch with the same behavior afterwards.
 It's repeating this:
 *** loading the extensions datasource
New Global extensions installed done ... scheduling restart.
 for every user.

What do you mean by installing from scratch? How do you install
thunderbird?

 Two problems:
* You cannot set an SMTP server for a secondary identity for an
account via the GUI. This is a UI problem, because you can set it
 manually by editing prefs.js

Are you sure? I mean, if I remember correctly, I used secondary
identities to address multiple smtp servers by hand ... and I don't
remember myself editing some config file manually ... though I can
just tell that this was working fine in some earlier version.

So now it is to you to find out why enigmail has a problem with this

Why are all those uids and email addresses messed up with '*'? Remove

Bug#343225: mozilla-thunderbird: Multiple outbound SMTP servers per account broken

As I move my machine around, I need to use different SMTP servers to
send mail, depending on the network I'm on. The obvious way to do this
is to add them to the account under account settings-outgoing smtp
server-advanced. This lets you add multiple servers and select one as
 default.

Nice, except it doesn't work. If there is more than 1 server, sending
mail always tries to use the first server, even if another is selected
as default. The only way to switch is to delete all but one server.
 Inconvenient at best.

As a workaround, setup one identity per smtp server. In this way you
can use different identities to use specific smtp hosts as you like.

Bug#343692: [m68k] ICEs while building gst-ffmpeg -- regression

2005-12-17 Thread Loïc Minier
Package: gcc-4.0
Version: 4.0.2-5
Severity: important

Hi,

After a change in gst-ffmpeg build flags, gcc-4.0 ICEd. This was back
in 0.8.7-3, and I reverted that change for m68k in 0.8.7-4 after I
pushed handling of the problem on Wouter Verhelst (I should have filed
 a bug instead).

http://buildd.debian.org/fetch.php?pkg=gst-ffmpegver=0.8.7-3arch=m68kstamp=1131304410file=logas=raw

Now, with the same build flags and compiler as in the past, gcc-4.0
ICEs with 0.8.7-5, so this is probably a regression in gcc-4.0.

http://buildd.debian.org/fetch.php?pkg=gst-ffmpegver=0.8.7-5arch=m68kstamp=1134721559file=logas=raw

So gcc-4.0_4.0.2-3 had a first ICE which I worked around, and the work
around doesn't work or causes a new ICE with gcc-4.0_4.0.2-5.

I'll try to collect some debugging informations via the developers
 accesible machine, crest.

   Bye,

I have no hope of making Xvnc work. It's written as old KR C coding
style, lots of warning when compiled with -Wall. No automake, tons of
ifdef, auto-rewriten Makefiles... Just adding -Wall -g to build was
painfull.

I corrected all includes about functions returning pointers, there are
other errors. If I patch code until I have a working binary for my
needs; other peoples will have a lot of troubles with differents
fonts, bpp, geometry or things like that, triggering bugs that I
didn't. Also any patch I will write can broke non-amd64, non-linux,
non-debian, non-sarge build because I don't know who is it supposed to
be build.

I think you should update this code to a more recent and 64bits aware
version; this code will not work unless lot and lot of work; and I
don't think it worth it.

I'm on a step where code jump to short, and I don't understand why.

Bug#334534: Patch from bug 307724 breaks Eclipse

2005-12-17 Thread Loic Minier
Hi,

On Fri, Dec 16, 2005, Billy Biggs wrote:
I talked about this again with seb128 at UBZ. I really think the
right solution is for Debian to revert the change. It's a really
low-level X thing, and there is no good way for us to detect that it is
fixed. Changing the Eclipse code in our stable release, especially now
that it is so widely tested and used, is really hard.
I can appreciate that the same is true for Debian. However, in the
Debian case, there are also lots of other distributions which are
shipping unpatched versions (or, at leat differently patched versions)
of GTK+. Just in terms of re-introducing bugs - clearly the safer fix
is to revert a Debian-specific patch applied to GTK+, rather than patch
 Eclipse for all distributions.

We already had the discussion, and you saw by yourself that it was
impossible to revert such a sensible change in a deeply frozen distro.

There are 1629 packages depending on libgtk2.0-0 available to my Debian
system, and this is excluding packages using libgtk2.0-0 indirectly, eg
via Python or Perl bindings. How many would be affected by such a
reversal? Is there anyway that we can at least get a count?
The answer to these questions is probably that we have no way to
measure the impact on such a huge number of packages, no-one can tell.
Besides, even if we knew that reverting the patch would need patching
of say 20 packages, there's *no* *way* the stable team is going to
allow such a change for the sake of... Eclipse. And this is only
assuming that we can really fix the bug for other packages/applications
from their point of view. What if the application is written in python
and we can't work around the gdk problems because the bindings aren't
 available?

I'm afraid we should have detected this problem earlier in the stable
release cycle. Back then, this patch helped fixing a real bug across a
number of applications, so it was interesting to include.

All I can offer is that we work with upstream to get some extra
version information in the API so that distros can include some
package related information (eg the version of the package).

Unless you have better ideas to solve the current situation than
revert this change in libgtk for Eclipse workaround code not to
 break, we're stuck.

Bug#341174: boost FTBFS on hppa

2005-12-17 Thread Steve Langasek
Hello,

Is anyone looking into this problem with building boost on hppa? As there
are quite a few packages which build-depend on boost (including parts of
KDE, and aptitude), this is likely to cause hppa to hold up the c2a
transition unless some progress is made here.

Thanks,

Reall strange. I still think its related to some XML writing/parsing

If the behaviour is indeed correct and I'm just stupid to think that
Help-Help Contents launches the Help-View instead of an external

Hmm, looking through the preferences I do see that I cannot choose to
use the internal web browser, maybe that's related?

Yes, I can confirm this. Seems to be a bug in handling the setting of

That's not true, as libbeagle0 will need to depend in beagle. The

split. IMHO, and that's the reason that made me at the end not to make
libbeagle0 package, which I was preparing, making that package would be
overkill and archive bloating.

Bug#343696: Adding feed with long URL doesn't work

2005-12-17 Thread J.H.M. Dassen (Ray)
Package: raggle
Version: 0.4.4-1
Severity: normal

I typically add feeds through 'a'dd pasting the URL from a browser. When I
do this with a URL that's longer than the remaining line length on the

when I try to add

in an 80x25 terminal, the actual URL raggle adds is
http://ncsf.aanhet.net/wiki/index.php?title=Speciaal:Recentchangesf

I work around this by a manual correction of ~/.raggle/feeds.yaml and raggle
doesn't seem to mind, so apparently it can handle longer URLs fine
internally, but it's merely a limitation in the 'a'dd functionality.

I'd like to see the 'a'dd functionality changed to support line-editing of
lines longer than the terminal line length.

1° This is not a bug for me, Eclipse runs fine on Debian... and with
free software;

2° Eclipse is a really important software to have in Debian and it takes
a lot of time to package, we really don't need to spend time in such

3° I don't understand the comparaison between Windows and Gnome, anyway,
I don't want you to explain your point of view.

Bug#343698: xfce4-cpufreq-plugin: Causes xfce4-panel to eat an always increasing amount of RAM

2005-12-17 Thread Roberto Pariset
Package: xfce4-cpufreq-plugin

Severity: important

If I monitor with `top' the %MEM field of xfce4-panel, I see that
normally it uses about 1.3 or 1.4. When I add cpufreq-plugin the

Hi,

This can be added with a trivial patch, so there should be no problem. We
are currently finalizing a new upstream release, and if Thibaut agrees

Just for my curiosity, which applications use the '.folder.jpg' file ?

Bug#338930: gambas - FTBFS: creating symbolic link: Permission denied

2005-12-17 Thread L. Redrejo
Thanks, In fact I had already apply the same solution for the packages a
couple of weeks ago, but they I am in the nm process and I am waiting
for a sponsor to upload them.
They are located at http://apt.linex.org/linex/gambas/ . If you are a
debian maintainer it would be great if you can check them and upload
them to Debian.
Regards.

Yes, I overwrite them on my machines.

And what is your reason for being unwilling to use the same procedure
 on devmapper disks?

Which procedure? You seem to know something I don't know. (Overwrite
means in my context: chmod of static devices or a MODE setting in the
udev config)

Personally, I'm using a system where the only way to obtain root access
is to log in as root -- there's no privileges gained through suid binaries.

Err? Write access to the device of a mounted filesystem is a way to gain
root if you don't disable several options.

So now it is to you to find out why enigmail has a problem with this
output. I'd be happy to have this problem solved, since I cannot write
any encrypted mails any more...

Why are all those uids and email addresses messed up with '*'? Remove
those keys that have an '*' in their uid/email and ask yourself, why your
own key has such wildcard itself?

The '*' are inserted from myself afterwards because
a) I wanted to protect the identity of the ones saved in my keyring
b) the lines don't get split on two lines for better overview.

Sorry if that action was misleading; these stars are *not* there in the
original output and the uid/email addresses are normal when printed out
by gpg.

Maybe another information: When I use the OpenPGP - Key Management
menu, only my own key is shown, but only with three out of the four UIDs
shown by gpg. When I right-click one of these UIDs and select Key
Properties, all fields are filled with ?.

Bye
Tobias

Bug#343528: Acknowledgement (getmail4 crashes with segfault randomly when connecting to server [NOW WITH ATTACHMENT])

2005-12-17 Thread Rob Loos

Hi Fredrik,

Here soms answers:
1) the system is not using PAX currently, so no pax errors.
2) I ran against python 2.4.1, error remains
3) rebooted machine with sysctl tweakable kernel.
As the error seldom appears directly after a boot, I am currently unable
to reproduce.

It may take weeks, but the error will return. Then I will report.

4) I'd like to try against python 2.4.2 because it fixes next possible
related errors:
   - Patch #1297028: fix segfault if call type on MultibyteCodec,
MultibyteStreamReader, or MultibyteStreamWriter.
   - Bug #110: The readline module could segfault if hook functions
were set in a different thread than that which called readline.

But I can't because not available yet on sarge. Damn.

Rob

You sure your removed the right .msf file? If your mailbox has a

Please try to find the mail in question in your mail folder file and take a

Yes. Read Documentation/usb/usbmon.txt in the kernel source.

Yes, I overwrite them on my machines.

And what is your reason for being unwilling to use the same procedure
 on devmapper disks?

Which procedure? You seem to know something I don't know. (Overwrite
means in my context: chmod of static devices or a MODE setting in the
 udev config)

A chown/chmod of the device is not scalable or practical. If I create
a new LV, the permissions will be wrong. If I run vgchange, the
permissions will be wrong. This is not a solution.

What if the user isn't using udev?

Do you have any example udev rules to do what you suggest?

Since udev, by default, does not get involved with creation of any
device mapper device other than /dev/mapper/control, the default
ownership and permissions come directly from the devmapper configure.
This is what needs fixing first. I would, however, like to see udev
become involved to allow this sort of customisation, but you will need
to work out the details with Marco d'Itri, the udev maintainer.

Roger

Bug#343705: emacs-snapshot: Quitting `save-buffer' can lose backup file

2005-12-17 Thread Sven Joachim

Package: emacs-snapshot
Version: 1:20051215-1
Severity: normal

[ I had already reported this bug upstream four weeks ago, but got no
response. And since it has not been fixed either, nobody seems to feel
responsible. So I report it here, trying to draw attention to the
problem. ]

If saving a buffer with the current or preferred coding system is not
possible, Emacs displays a `*Warning*' buffer which tells to select a safe
coding system or to edit the buffer. If you quit then and the buffer had
not been saved before (i.e., `buffer-backed-up' was nil), you will lose the
backup file for the buffer. Take the following steps to reproduce the
problem:

$ export LC_ALL=C
$ echo foo bar ; cp bar bar~
$ emacs -Q -f view-hello-file bar

In Emacs, in the bar buffer, type

M-x insert-buffer RET
C-x C-s

Emacs should display a '*Warning*' buffer now; type C-g to quit. Now there
are two problems: The backup file bar~ is gone :-( and, more importantly,
`buffer-backed-up' is t, although the buffer had actually not been backed
up. Thus, saving later will not back up the original state.

The problem seems to be long outstanding, I could also reproduce it
with Emacs 21.4.

These files are, as far as I know, all altered by the kernel install

shouldn't be shipping md5sums for them, since they are expected to be
altered.

Bug#338686: [synaptics-driver] Re: KDM and shared memory again

Hello,

[Cc-ing all those who participated in this bug report]

I received this message from the synaptics driver upstream developer,
could any of you report if disabling qsynaptics or (ksynaptics) makes
the touchpad happy again with KDM?

| Another possibility is that there is some kind of upgrade problem. Does

  1) change devmapper defaults -- patch rejected, no reason given
Certainly I agree that the defaults should be changed.

At least in my point of view, a default is something which can be
changed easily, maybe in a config file. In this case, it is no default,
it is the value which anything gets.

No. A default is what happens in the *absence* of any configuration,
i.e. what is compiled into the devmapper packages.

$ dict default
- From WordNet (r) 2.0 (August 2003) [wn]:

  default
4: an option that is selected automatically unless an
alternative is specified [syn: {default option}]

I've also seen the suggestion that we should have a explicit
technical policy that block devices should default to having 660
permissions with owner root and group disk. I don't have any
objections to such a policy, but I don't see that solving this
problem should wait on the adoption of this policy.
Quite so. (Modulo my comments about the exact mode, above.)

This breaks anything which wants to use group cdrom for cdrom access
 without manual intervention.

No one suggested that this would apply to CD-ROM devices. They aren't
disk block devices.

Finally, I don't see any reasoning given for things being the way they are
currently. There might be some such reason, but I'm a bit dubious --
if there was a good reason, why wasn't it spelled out months ago?

Secure by default is no reason? You can always overwrite it on
 runtime.

By default, no user belongs to group disk, so it is secure. The
system administrator has to take special steps to make it insecure.

The amanda-common postinst adds the backup user to the disk and tape
groups, for example. The backup *system* user exists solely for the
purpose of creating and restoring backups, and is equivalent to user
nobody but with disk and tape access. You could consider it
equivalent to root, since it does have full system access, but it's
only ever used from e.g. /etc/cron.d.

Roger

You recreate the complete /dev?

If I create
a new LV, the permissions will be wrong. If I run vgchange, the
permissions will be wrong. This is not a solution.

And I don't speak about libdevmapper managed device.

What if the user isn't using udev?

There are only 2 versions, static dev or udev, so which one is missing?

Do you have any example udev rules to do what you suggest?

I think I found the reason for that core dump:

If UTF-8 is really not in use and that script is loaded in
~/.irssi/startup , irssi dumps core during startup. Probably the bug is
in that script rather than in irssi. But as long as I am really not yet
in UTF-8-era, I should not load that script at all.

Is that the only script you load? It's possible that it could be a bug
in perl. I'll keep the bug open, but downgrade it and do a little bit
more digging into the problem first.

Isn't that what's being done here?

myisamchk is referencing the program in /usr/bin. The check scripts that run
at server startup run /usr/bin/mysqlcheck though. This program just
issues a CHECK TABLE SQL command to the server so does not need to care
about extra locking.

The external locking is would only be necessary if the server would not know
that you are fiddling around with its database files with external programs
without letting it know about this (i.e. executing /usr/bin/myisamchk).

Bugger. I _think_ I've found the problem, some debug left in that was

Bug#343711: gdk-x11-2.0.pc spreads library dependencies needlessly

2005-12-17 Thread J.H.M. Dassen (Ray)
Package: libgtk2.0-dev
Version: 2.8.9-2
Severity: important

/usr/lib/pkgconfig/gdk-x11-2.0.pc currently includes a number of libraries
in its Libs: line which it only uses privately (as far as I have been able
to tell): -lXrandr -lXrender -lXi -lXinerama -lXext.
(It also includes -lX11, but that dependency is exposed through e.g.
gdk/gdkx.h)

It should be improved to have them in Libs.private instead so as not to
expose these dependencies needlessly; see
http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel-announce/2005/11/msg00016.html

It is possible that other .pc files from this package can also be improved
this way.

11:54 nutmeg Is the new GTK f*cked with respect to unneeded
shlib-dependencies? Rebuilding a package against it adds a whole lot of
dependencies ( libcairo2, libfontconfig1, libfreetype6, libpng12-0
libxcursor1 ( 1.1.2), libxext6, libxi6, libxinerama1, libxrandr2, libxrender1

11:55 nutmeg dependency_libs in /usr/lib/libgtk-x11-2.0.la is huge.

12:10 JHM nutmeg: The .la isn't the problem AFAIK; `pkg-config --libs

12:11 JHM It looks like /usr/lib/pkgconfig/gtk+-2.0.pc should have atk
cairo in a Requires.private rather than Requires.
12:14 JHM Except it can't, as it exposes both atk and cairo through
#includes in its headers.
12:16 nutmeg JHM: Thanks, I'll be back in hour.
12:22 JHM AFAICT it would be a good idea to move Xrandr, Xrender, Xi,
Xinerama and Xext from Libs to Libs.private in gdk-x11-2.0.pc .
12:23 JHM (The X11 dependency is exposed through gdk/gdkx.h and
gdk-pixbuf-xlib/gdk-pixbuf-xlib*.h)
12:28 lool JHM: we had a lengthy discussion on the subject with vte
12:28 lool JHM: vte has the same problem with gtk, vte's headers include
gtk's headers, and packages FTBFS since some Require were moved to
Require.private
12:29 lool JHM: the decision is at the pkg-config level, but it's probable
that we will have to stick with more ELF deps than truly needed for Gtkish libs

in stable builds

According to http://xmlgraphics.apache.org/fop/0.90/graphics.html JIMI

that new release, and maybe uploading it to main/experimental.

newer xfs would have needed serious core changes in 2.6.8.
the debian kernel team had been penalized by the unforseen

it's very unfortunate as xfs in debian's kernel had
special attention. ext2, ext3 is recommended for 2.6.8 usage.

if you are bound to 2.6.8 you'd anyway better have not

Bug#341607: more on logfile search

2005-12-17 Thread Justin Pryzby
A have another problem with logfiles.
(Already forwarded to SF.NET #1373116)

I had talked to use 'ana' on account [EMAIL PROTECTED] exactly
once. I wanted to find the spelling of 'tenerife', so i searched
first for 'ffe' (sic). When it didn't highlight the word in the text,
I tried searching for 'ten'; I typed 'ten' into the search box, and
pressed enter. After some minutes, I relized that the highlight
hadn't updated, it was still highlighting 'ffe', and I expected it to
have highlighed 'ten', only. This happened when I clicked the
'[EMAIL PROTECTED]:00:00' log entry, which had become deselected when I
clicked Search (or pressed enter).

I would suggest to either update the highlights on the current log
when a new search is entered, or to clear the log buffer, so it is
more clear that the new search is not in effect.

Bug#343714: Cannot use evmsn from initrd due to missing library

2005-12-17 Thread J.H.M. Dassen (Ray)
Package: evms-bootdebug
Version: 2.5.3-7
Severity: important

To boot my current kernel, I generated an initrd per
/usr/share/doc/evms-bootdebug/README.Debian . When booting this kernel with
that initrd, evmsn could not be used from the initrd, due to a missing
libncurses.so.5.

Looking at /usr/share/initramfs-tools/hooks/evms_bootdebug, it does not take
into account the dependencies of the binaries (like evmsn or the fscks)
which it copies.

initiramfs-tools' /usr/share/initramfs-tools/hook-functions includes a
copy_exec function which appears to copy binaries including the libraries
they depend on. Please use that function in
/usr/share/initramfs-tools/hooks/evms_bootdebug to copy the binaries so that
the libraries they depend on will be available in the initrd.

can (theoretically) still exist, just that the ldap-libraries is still
using libgnutls11, and exim is now using libgnutls12. Or what? I don't

Anyway, this bug doesn't exist for me anymore (for now, at least).

I'd like to mark this bug as fixed in 4.52-2 if nobody comes up with
a confirmation that this issue still happens with later exim4 packages.

Marking will occur after 2006-01-31.

It would be useful to have uuencode available in busybox-udeb for the

like to use uuencode to create loop-AES multi-key style encryption keys.

 Reasons:
 - unneccesary, keys never needs to be readable.

They do need to be in base64 in order to retain compatibility with
previous (and future) loop-AES versions.

loop-AES multi-key contain 1, 64 or 65 newline-seperated keys. The
number of keys decides how the keyfile is used for setup: 1 key is
equivalent to normal hashed passphrase setup, 64-key format is v2
where keys are alternated to encrypt sectors, and 65-key format is
v2 with an extra key (65th) to seed MD5 IV computation.

 - reduces the entrophy.

No, the entropy does not change with different presentation.

We have 2925 bytes of random data, or 45 bytes for each key. So
entropy available for each key (assuming ideal /dev/random) is
256^45 = 2.3485e+108. When we uuencode this data, each key
transforms into a base64-string of 60 bytes, so entropy is 64^60 =
2.3485e+108 = 256^45. The longer string makes up for the reduced
alphabet. That we only have base64 characters doesn't matter
because all keys are used as input to a hash function only.

 I reject the patch.

I understand your reservations, but I think they are not actually
justified. Please reconsider.

cheers,
Max

Does your system have enough entropy?

I'd like to see an answer to this question. When your exim hangs, what
value can be found in /proc/sys/kernel/random/entropy_avail?

Greetings
Marc

Bug#343683: [Pkg-nagios-devel] Bug#343683: nagios-mysql: New install scripts do not reask for the passwords when running dpkg-reconfigure

I let dbconfig-commong handle the MySQL configuration, but made a mistake

In fact, I even have to select 'retry' after the config failure to make the
script ask me for the MySQL main password again, which it doesn't do on the
 first run.

interesting. i'll have to look into why it doesn't prompt for the
password a second time, but won't have time for the next week or so.

in the meantime, be aware that you can also edit
/etc/dbconfig-common/nagios-mysql.conf, which is where the configuration
information is stored. or, you can edit the nagios configuration
manually of course, but... that would be ruining all the fun of
an automatic system :)
