Bug#351621: xfree86-driver-synaptics: Default configuration inadequate, mouse move way to slowly ...
Package: xfree86-driver-synaptics Severity: important I recently tried Debian/etch on my laptop and using the default configuration provided by Debian the touchpad can't be used as the mouse moves maybe 30 pixels when my finger goes from one side of the touchpad to the other side. I tried Ubuntu breezy and there I haven't the problem. I looked what was causing the problem ... and it's this package. And indeed when I tried on Debian with the Ubuntu package, which has been renamed xorg-driver-synpatics in breezy and then xserver-xorg-input-synaptics in dapper (could you rename the Debian package too ? it makes sense since when I look for X related stuff, I expect now an xorg prefix), it works fine ... The ubuntu package is an older version in breezy : 0.13.6 http://packages.ubuntu.com/breezy/x11/xorg-driver-synaptics http://packages.ubuntu.com/changelogs/pool/main/x/xorg-driver-synaptics/xorg-driver-synaptics_0.14.3+revertedto+0.13.6-0ubuntu3/changelog As you can see from the changelog, they had numerous problems with the 0.14.x version and they decided to revert to the previous version. Now in dapper they came back to 0.14.3 (but I haven't tried the dapper version), maybe they have a fix in that version ? http://packages.ubuntu.com/dapper/x11/xserver-xorg-input-synaptics I'd be glad if you could coordinate with the respective Ubuntu maintainers and check if they have a fix: Daniel Stone [EMAIL PROTECTED] mainly (up to now). Bug#351532: freeloader fails to fire up from terminal
Hi, Thanks for testing. I ran a check to see which package provides for khashmir.py and as you can see from the the output below it was provided by bittorrent-4.2.1.linux from from mentors.debian.net by Sam Morris which I recalled I built from source. OK, then I think it is more sure to make freeloader depend on bittorrent 4.0, even if this package has not yet entered the official repository. I will of course forward this upstream, as this may be of great importance for the future of freeloader. Purging bittorrent-4.2.1.linux (i.e. dpkg -P bittorrent-4.2.1.linux) alone could not get freeloader to start as /usr/lib/python2.3/site-packages/khashmir was supposedly not empty and thus not removed. Freeloader does depend on bittorrent python module, which is provided by bittorrent package itself. In your case, you have to uninstall bittorrent-4.2.1.linux, and install bittorrent from the official archive, or wait until a new version of freeloader supports bittorrent 4. Bug#351601: coreutils: minor formatting issue in the mv an cp manpages
Nicolas François [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: help2man requires at least 2 spaces between the options and the descriptions. The generated man pages contain: .TP \fB\-\-strip\-trailing\-slashes\fR remove any trailing slashes from each SOURCE argument instead of: .TP \fB\-\-strip\-trailing\-slashes\fR remove any trailing slashes from each SOURCE argument This causes a minor formatting issue (mostly on less than 80 columns terminals or devices) Thanks for the report and patch. I've applied it upstream, for coreutils-6.x. I spotted a few others, so added a `make distcheck' rule to ensure that no more creep in. Here's the additional patch: 2006-02-06 Jim Meyering [EMAIL PROTECTED] * src/unexpand.c (usage): Use two spaces (not one) to separate the --first-only option string from its description, so help2man formats the derived man page properly. * src/rm.c (usage): Likewise for --no-preserve-root. * src/chown.c (usage): Likewise. * src/chgrp.c (usage): Likewise. Bug#351625: portmap: please add -f option (don't daemonize)
Package: portmap Version: 5-17 Severity: wishlist Tags: patch Hi, see below for a patch that adds the -f option to portmap: -f (foreground) prevents portmap from running as a daemon, and causes log messages to be printed to the standard error output. This is useful to have portmap run under the runit init scheme, or (respawning) from /etc/inittab. The -d option does nearly the same, but causes portmap to additionally print uninteresting debug messages. Bug#351626: wxwidgets2.6 should not be native
Package: wxwidgets2.6 Severity: important Version: 2.6.1.2 Hi, when backporting wxwidgets2.6 for sarge (as needed by amule), I noticed that the package is native. Policy doesn't specifically disallow that style, but imho it shouldn't be used for any non-trivial package. Additionally, this makes NMUs/backports require a new tarball, and leeds to ugly version numbers like 2.6.1.1bpo1. Please repackage wxwidgets2.6 (and wxwindows2.4) using a .diff.gz. Bug#351592:
(Oops- I've recently changed my default editor from vim to emacs and it seems that emacs doesn't line wrap in the way I'd hoped! Hopefully this re-send should be much more readable) During an install on a mostly sarge system of newer x-window-system-core from testing, apt-get warns of dependency problems but doesn't prompt for permission to proceed or suggest any solution. I'd expect the dependency resolution to either remove the packages which no longer have their dependencies met or to upgrade them so that they depend on the newer packages being installed. I'd thought the dependency problems would be recognised in the initial stages and resolved in the solution presented before the Do you want to continue? [Y/n]. Failing this automation, should there not be a warning and some opportunity to abort the install? My example is below. Is this expected behaviour? Any advice appreciated. Thanks, Andrew Archibald ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Bug#351628: Please use white list to filter environment variables
Package: dchroot Severity: whishlist dchroot invokes /bin/su with the original environment and EUID = UID = 0. There is a slight potential that this might trigger harmful behavior because to su, it looks as if it was run by root, and not like a SUID invocation from an untrusted user. Fortunately, all the critical LD_* variables are filtered by GNU libc in a blacklist, so this is not directly exploitable. But it's better to play safe, IMHO (see the sudo problems in this area). -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

That old package is only left in woodys non-us, removed from the main archive for nearly two years now, so if one should conflict with something that would have need to be done in sarge, which is obviously too late. Simply removing it from the archive doesn't mean it's removed from users' systems. Adding a conflicts _will_. I don't really see why it matters that it's too late for sarge. How about people that track testing... like me. And this is an uncommon case or we would have had much more of these reports, so it isnt also not enough for a sarge point release. I'm not asking for a sarge point release, I'm asking for a conflicts to be added to nagios-plugins-basic. I'm not bothering to reopen the bug, but IMO the bug is still there. Minimal test that reproduces the problem: [EMAIL PROTECTED]:~/adm/libc cat t.c #include stdlib.h void at() {} int f(void) { atexit(at); return 0; } [EMAIL PROTECTED]:~/adm/libc gcc -shared -o libt.so t.c /usr/lib/libc_nonshared.a(atexit.oS)(.gnu.linkonce.t.__i686.get_pc_thunk.bx+0x0): In function `__i686.get_pc_thunk.bx': : multiple definition of `__i686.get_pc_thunk.bx' /usr/lib/gcc-lib/i486-linux/3.3.5/crtbeginS.o(.gnu.linkonce.t.__i686.get_pc_thunk.bx+0x0): first defined here collect2: ld returned 1 exit status Error goes away if libc is downgraded to version in testing. Error was not there before today's upgrade (so it not was there in 2.3.5-12 version). Error also goes away if binutils is upgraded from sarge version to version currently in unstable. But this upgrade in turn causes problems with usage of g++ 3.3, described at http://gcc.gnu.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=16625. This problem happens on Debian if binutils are post-sarge, with any version of g++-3.3 packages. So at least, dependency on recent binutils should be added. But it would be much better if compatibility with sarge binutils will be preserved in libc6-dev until a workable combination of g++-3.3 and post-sarge binutils will be found. Unfortunately, we do have to use g++-3.3 ABI here, and I'm sure we are not alone with that. -- System Information: Debian Release: 3.1 APT prefers proposed-updates APT policy: (640, 'proposed-updates'), (640, 'stable'), (620, 'testing-proposed-updates'), (620, 'testing'), (600, 'unstable'), (550, 'experimental') Architecture: i386 (i686) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/bash Kernel: Linux 2.6.15 Locale: LANG=ru_RU.KOI8-R, LC_CTYPE=ru_RU.KOI8-R (charmap=KOI8-R) Versions of packages libc6-dev depends on: ii libc62.3.5-8 GNU C Library: Shared libraries an ii linux-kernel-headers 2.5.999-test7-bk-17 Linux Kernel Headers for developme Versions of packages libc6-dev recommends: ii gcc [c-compiler] 4:3.3.5-3 The GNU C compiler ii gcc-2.95 [c-compiler]1:2.95.4-22 The GNU C compiler ii gcc-3.3 [c-compiler] 1:3.3.5-13 The GNU C compiler ii gcc-3.4 [c-compiler] 3.4.3-13The GNU C compiler -- no debconf information -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Hmmm, I think I did something wrong with my bug submission and I lost the description. Here it is. On the arm platform (at least) character arrays are not packed on byte boundaries, which means that the structures defined in iso9660.h do NOT map properly to the on-disc records. The attached patch uses __attribute__((packed)) on gcc compilers to ensure the correct packing. Hi Karl! On Son, 29 Jan 2006, Karl Berry wrote: 214729makeinfo --html should generate valid HTML -- makeinfo --html currently generates HTML without a DOCTYPE line. It should generate valid HTML. I do not agree this is a bug. I've never seen doctype lines do anything but cause trouble (not in recent browsers, but in old ones). makeinfo's HTML output is extremely vanilla and should work fine everywhere. I guess the problem with the output is that it is not clear which version of HTML the document is using. I have checked the texinfo.html file with the validator and it is neither HTML 2.0 nor HTML 3.2. WIth HTML 4.01 Transitional for texinfo.html I get only 4 errors. (http://validator.w3.org/) I am not opposed to makeinfo acquiring more output formats, like HTML4 and XHTML, for those who care about such things, but it's not something I plan to work on in the foreseeable future. So makeinfo --html already produces HTML4 (definitely not html2 or html3, there are so many failures that I can't believe it. I don't know about old browsers and wether they can display HTML4, but maybe it would be indeed a good idea to add a doctype. Bug#218557: Bug reports for texinfo (and 2 wishes)
Hi Karl! On Son, 29 Jan 2006, Karl Berry wrote: 218557dies with Cannot find node `Top' That is a very long bug report, but what I need to fix the bug is the actual dir file which causes the crash, and I don't see it there. (Maybe it's there and I'm missing it amongst all the other stuff.) I appreciate all the analysis and strace's and gdb transcripts and so on, but it doesn't help me reproduce it or confirm a fix. I think that there are several things involved, some of them are in no way realted to texinfo/info at all. What IS related is that info does not warn if the dir files contains rubbish, or nothing. Ok, this is a valid dir file (I suppose) but info might give a warning. I think the most important part of this thread http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=218557 is the email from Loïc Minier [EMAIL PROTECTED] from Fri, 1 Oct 2004. He states that somehow his dir files was corrupted,i.e. contained only binary 0 for 35k and then normal entries. To quote him: I think that some things are wrong on info's side here: - a part of the file only is corrupted, but neither did info mention it was corrupted, nor could it use the non-corrupted part, so I believe there is an abort strategy in place[1], but it doesn't expose failures, - install-info was called on a corrupted file, but succeeded[2]. The first part is interesting for you, the second part for those provinding the debian install-info (and for you: I will take a look into what is necessary to merge debian and gnu install-info). He also gives the location in the source code where there seems to be the problem. I would suggest you take a look only at his email, and see if we can do something here. hi, boost package has a RC bug #349209 due to non-free license of graph library. this issue should be being sorted by Steve M. Bug#204117: Help with installing sgml/xml catalogue stuff

Bug#351525: dvipdfmx: how to properly implement map files support for dvipdfmx
Junichi Uekawa [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: The ideal situation is: 1. updmap-sys should handle dvipdfmx map files (can't it do that? I need confirmation on this) It has no special treatment for dvipdfmx, and therefore it cannot handle the entries with @ properly. We would need a different output file for dvipdfmx and a special treatment of these entries, which may not end up in pdftex's or dvips' font map files. On the other hand, it has been discussed whether texlive and teTeX should drop dvipdfm completely in favor of dvipdfmx. In this case the change to updmap would be a little easier. 2. have a directory of configuration files that dvipdfmx can read. (doesn't it already do that? need to check) 3. or failing that, implement update-dvipdfmx, which does something similar to what ptex-jisfonts is trying to do. It should probably write to /var/lib/ rather than /etc/texmf/dvipdfm/ I think the best approach would be to bring together the dvipdfmx and texlive developers, and implement a general solution that can be used independently of Debian. Bug#351621: xfree86-driver-synaptics: Default configuration inadequate, mouse move way to slowly ...
Hello! Did you read /usr/share/doc/xfree86-driver-synaptics/README.alps and tried the configuration suggested there? The 3rd paragraph says: Since ALPS touchpads don't have the same resolution as Synaptics touchpads, you probably have to change some parameter values. It didn't make much sense[1] to rename the package when Xorg entered Debian, maybe with the modular X I'll use the same naming scheme as X. [1]: http://lists.debian.org/debian-x/2005/06/msg00551.html The ubuntu package is an older version in breezy : 0.13.6 http://packages.ubuntu.com/breezy/x11/xorg-driver-synaptics http://packages.ubuntu.com/changelogs/pool/main/x/xorg-driver-synaptics/xorg-driver-synaptics_0.14.3+revertedto+0.13.6-0ubuntu3/changelog As you can see from the changelog, they had numerous problems with the 0.14.x version and they decided to revert to the previous version. Now in dapper they came back to 0.14.3 (but I haven't tried the dapper version), maybe they have a fix in that version ? http://packages.ubuntu.com/dapper/x11/xserver-xorg-input-synaptics they don't. The package is identical to Debian's except for some changed install directories and build flags due to the modular Xorg being already available in Ubuntu. Oh, actually it seems they are affected by this same bug(?) but never reported here (who knows about upstream...). https://launchpad.net/distros/ubuntu/dapper/+source/xserver-xorg-input-synaptics/+bugs I'd be glad if you could coordinate with the respective Ubuntu maintainers and check if they have a fix: Daniel Stone [EMAIL PROTECTED] mainly (up to now). Eheheh, been there done that (not much successful also because X is evolving differently in Ubuntu). Oddly, now that you point to the Ubuntu's changelog I see that some of my suggestions have never been taken into consideration and they later had some problem. Anyway they obviously have different priorities than we have so maybe shipping an older version of the driver is better than trying to fix regressions. Please tell me what information I should provide you so that we can fix the stuff definitely. My laptop is a Dell latitude D410. README.alps is pretty clear about the problem being a different resolution on different touchpad models (Synaptics v/s ALPS) so either one needs a specific configuration. Can you try the suggested ALPS configuration in README.alps? If that works the bug can be closed (IMO). Did you experienced any different behaviour with older versions of the debian package? BTW: I'm wondering why Ubuntu's package is supposed to work out of the box but I don't know what Ubuntu sets up ([gk]synaptics?) and I'm not really worried about that as their {up,down}grade dance seems much more dangerous (looking at the bugs they're suffering that are actually fixed in the latest version) than working with upstream to fix current bugs and/or regressions. fiddling with Ubuntu's launchpad Oh, it seems they automated the process in the xserver configuration scripts. Back to Debian's: currently no setup is done in my package. Probably the modular dexconf will allow a better integration of external drivers in xorg.conf and the touchpad can be automagically configured upon installation. Bug#346543: udev netlink problems with kernel 2.6.15 on alpha
Since I updated to latest udev (testing) and linux-image-2.6.15-1-alpha-generic version 2.6.15-3 (will try 2.6.15-4 next time I reboot this machine) it seems to work without errors. In upstream 2.6.15.1/.2 were a lot of changes to netlink code, so it could be that it was a kernel bug that only appeared in the alpha architecture. For a short time my udev-fixup script was run too late in my rcS.d (because latest udev changed to order of init-script-loads) and nevertheless it worked, so I realized that it was fixed. Please do not close the bug, I try it again without any fixup script (that sets the sysctls) and the latest kernel and close the bug then. Bug#351652: change to /etc/csh.login
Package: tcsh Version: 6.14.00-2 Severity: wishlist Tags: patch Hi, in order to fix bug #344030 for users of tsch (and csh) I need to execute some code in /etc/csh.login (there unfortunately doesn't seem to be a non-shell-specific way to deal with the corner case in that bug). Attached are 2 versions of csh.login with competing solutions to do so: 1) modularized_csh.login: this version of csh_login modularizes this file so all scripts dropped into /etc/csh/login.d are sourced (when that directory exists) - IMO this is the preferred solution as: - it can be used by other packages also (e.g. the user-es, and user-de configuration packages could make use of this, I'll provide patches to those if his way is chosen) - doesn't clutter the system unnecessarely (though minimally) when desktop-profiles isn't installed . 2) with_bugfix_csh.login: this just adds the shell-snippet needed to fix bug #344030 directly into /etc/csh.login -- Cheers, cobaco /\ ASCII Ribbon Campaign \ / No proprietary formats in attachments without request X i.e. *NO* WORD, POWERPOINT or EXCEL documents / \ Respect Open Standards http://www.fsf.org/philosophy/no-word-attachments.html http://www.goldmark.org/netrants/no-word/attach.html # /etc/csh.login: system-wide .login file for csh(1) and tcsh(1) # allow for other packages/system admins to customize the shell environment if (-e /etc/csh/login.d) then foreach FILE (`ls /etc/csh/login.d/*`) source $FILE; end; endif # /etc/csh.login: system-wide .login file for csh(1) and tcsh(1) # This fixes the desktop-profiles corner-case where a graphical client is # started through an ssh -X session (in which the Xsession.d scripts aren't # run, so we need to make sure the profiles are activated according to the # specified settings at login). set DESKTOP_PROFILES_SNIPPET=/usr/share/desktop-profiles/get_desktop-profiles_variables if (-e $DESKTOP_PROFILES_SNIPPET) then # initialization set TEMP_FILE=`tempfile` # use bash to write the required environment settings to a tempfile # this file has a VARIABLE=VALUE format bash $DESKTOP_PROFILES_SNIPPET $TEMP_FILE # convert to csh format and source to set the required environment variables sed -i 's/^\(.*\)=\(.*\)$/setenv \1 \2/' $TEMP_FILE source $TEMP_FILE # cleanup rm $TEMP_FILE endif pgpHTBMQGsrQl.pgp Description: PGP signature

Bug#345931: grub 0.97 doesn't work on several machines
retitle 345931 System fails to boot after updating boot sector from grub interactive shell thanks I have managed to reproduce this in vmware using the following procedure: - new Sarge install (has grub 0.95+cvs20040624-17) - change sources list to unstable and upgrade After grub is upgraded (to 0.97-4), but without re-installing its boot sector, the system reboots without problem. Now there are two methods to reinstall the grub boot sector to the new version. 1) Run the grub-install script # grub-install /dev/sda1 Installation finished. No error reported. This is the contents of the device map /boot/grub/device.map. Check if this is correct or not. If any of the lines is incorrect, fix it and re-run the script 'grub-install'. (hd0) /dev/sda # reboot = system reboots without any problems 2) Run the grub shell interactively as in the original report # grub grub find /boot/grub/menu.lst (hd0,0) grub root (hd0,0) Filesystem type is ext2fs, partition type 0x83 grub setup (hd0) Checking if /boot/grub/stage1 exists... no Checking if /grub/stage1 exists... yes Checking if /grub/stage2 exists... yes Checking if /grub/e2fs_stage1_5 exists... yes Running embed /grub/e2fs_stage1_5 (hd0)... 16 sectors are embedded. succeeded Running install /grub/stage1 (hd0) (hd0)1+16 p (hd0,0)/grub/stage2 /grub/menu..lst... succeeded Done. grub quit # reboot = Grub menu is not shown (screen remains blank); system fails to boot Conclusions: - grub-install does the right thing - the setup command in the grub interactive shell checks if the stage files exist, but apparently its setup command fails to check if they are compatible with the current version of grub I will keep the image I created this way in vmware for a while in case additional information is wanted. Bug#351277: The same bug applies to me
I use 2.0.1-2 on powerpc and the same bug applies to me. The PDF export does not show lines with width = 0. Lines with width greater than 0 *are* printed. I checked your test file and the line is not exported on my computer. This bug may be in connection with bug 350019, which hits me too. -- Eugen -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Sure, this is what you get by mixing apples and pears. This situation cannot ever happen in testing/unstable and if you trying to backport GNOME 2.12 you have to backport whole suite and not just some parts. I will add this dependency to SVN and will get included in next upload to unstable. Ondrej. -- Ondrej Sury [EMAIL PROTECTED] signature.asc Description: This is a digitally signed message part
Bug#351621: xfree86-driver-synaptics: Default configuration inadequate, mouse move way to slowly ...
On Mon, 06 Feb 2006, Mattia Dongili wrote: Hello! Hi ! Did you read /usr/share/doc/xfree86-driver-synaptics/README.alps and tried the configuration suggested there? The 3rd paragraph says: Since ALPS touchpads don't have the same resolution as Synaptics touchpads, you probably have to change some parameter values. I didn't even know that I have an Alps touchpad until this morning when I started to dig into /proc and /sys to find out how to identify my touchpad... As I said, customizing the MaxSpeed/MinSpeed/AccelFactor helps (I discovered this by reading the synaptics manual page) so this README certainly gives a working config. It didn't make much sense[1] to rename the package when Xorg entered Debian, maybe with the modular X I'll use the same naming scheme as X. [1]: http://lists.debian.org/debian-x/2005/06/msg00551.html Yeah, please follow the convention introduced by the modular Xorg (and having the same source package in Debian and Ubuntu certainly helps in many areas since many tools rely on this, like the various scripts used by Utnubu to compare Debian and Ubuntu) Oh, actually it seems they are affected by this same bug(?) but never reported here (who knows about upstream...). https://launchpad.net/distros/ubuntu/dapper/+source/xserver-xorg-input-synaptics/+bugs Indeed ! I CC fabbione that he can explain what Ubuntu has decided to do for this bug. Anyway they obviously have different priorities than we have so maybe shipping an older version of the driver is better than trying to fix regressions. That's the kind of decision they are forced to make given the man power/delay problem they encounter from time to time. However I'm interested to fix the regression in Debian ! :-) README.alps is pretty clear about the problem being a different resolution on different touchpad models (Synaptics v/s ALPS) so either one needs a specific configuration. Can you try the suggested ALPS configuration in README.alps? If that works the bug can be closed (IMO). IMO it can't ... the driver should auto-detect the kind of Touchpad and adjust the default values of the resolution stuff so that it works out of the box on *any* hardware. If upstream doesn't want that (and I could understand that since I don't know any portable way to auto-detect hardware), then we need to auto-install a different configuration when the Debian package detects Alps touchpad. Did you experienced any different behaviour with older versions of the debian package? I have the laptop since December only so I can't say ... Let's see. Okay, ccing debian-x to have feedback on this aspect. We certainly need to have a way to properly configure a touchpad so that it works out of the box. The touchpad information are stored in /sys/class/input and it is theoretically possible to gather them and create a table to identify what touchpad needs what. The major issue that we did encounter across time is that there is no winner. No matter what config you ship, synaptic breaks for one person or another. I agree with you tho that upstream could start investigating the option to create default settings on input ID base. that will take anyway quite sometime to stabilize in the code. For 0.14.3 that we are shipping in dapper, I will either add a big fat readme or new configs will be created with the MaxSpeed/etc. setting ready to be uncommented. I see no otherway in a short term to get this fixed properly. Fabio -- I'm going to make him an offer he can't refuse. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe.
