Firefox hangs on NULs embedded in html with style=text-align: justify;.
This bug seems to be Debian-specific, as I wasn't able to reproduce it with
 upstream Mozilla Firefox 1.5.0.4.

Can you try with MOZ_DISABLE_PANGO=1 ?

Bug#372251: General cleanup: fixing CFLAGS, compiler warnings, lintian errors, ...

2006-06-09 Thread Christian 'Greek0' Aichinger
Package: cutter
Severity: normal
Tags: patch

The attached diff fixes the passing of CFLAGS from debian/rules to
the main Makefile. Without this fix, the CFLAGS set in debian/rules
(-Wall -g -O2) are not communicated down.

It also fixes an error in the manpage cutter(8), which produced an
error message in the `man` output.

Futher it updates the FSF address in debian/copyright.

It also cleans up the code a bit, fixing several compiler warnings.
3 correlated ones remain, though they are harmless, and the fix
looks rather stupid to me.

Lastly it updates Standards-Version to 3.7.2, no changes are
required AFAICS.

With this patch cutter is lintian and linda clean again.

HTH,
Christian Aichinger

Bug#372252: nvidia-glx-legacy: purge does not remove all diversions.

2006-06-09 Thread Andrew Vaughan
Package: nvidia-glx-legacy
Version: 1.0.7174-4

Hello again

Version 1.0.7174-4 is out, and whilst installing it, I discovered
another issue. Neither 1.0.7174-3 nor -4 removes all diversions when
purged.

I purged version 1.0.7174-3, and re-installed xserver-xorg-core
to repair the overwrite, before trying to install 1.0.7174-4.

Bug#372253: hylafax-server: init.d script may have some timing issues

2006-06-09 Thread Ross Boylan
Package: hylafax-server
Version: 2:4.3.0-3
Severity: normal

Stopping HylaFAX daemons: faxq hfaxd faxgetty.
Not starting HylaFAX daemons since they are already running.

Stopping HylaFAX daemons: faxq(not running) hfaxd(not running) faxgetty.
Starting HylaFAX daemons: faxq hfaxd faxgetty.

It looks as if restart attempts to start before the old stuff is
killed. This and some similar apparent timing issues happened more
than once.

Seems similar to 321854.

Bug#371077: mount: can't read superblock

2006-06-09 Thread Joerg Morbitzer

Ok it happened again this morning, attached you can see two text files,
the one called does-not-work.txt is a tcpdump between the Debian Sid
PC (hostname mars) and the FreeBSD-Server (hostname erde) where the
mount does not work, tried with mount version 2.12r-10. The one called
does-work.txt is when I downgraded to 2.12r-8 and it worked straight away.

It takes roughly a minute until the can't read superblock message
appears and the mount fails.

Kind regards, Joerg.

After downgrading back to 2.12r-8 it works again like expected. No syslog
messages concerning this problem on neither the FreeBSD machine nor
my Debian Sid PC.

FreeBSD version of the NFS server is FreeBSD 5.4-RELEAE.

Let me know if you need any further details.

Could you capture the traffic with tcpdump, so that we can see what is
actually being sent back and forth?

thanks,
lamont

Bug#372256: unclear wording in NEWS file

2006-06-09 Thread Tomas Pospisek
Package: cupsys
Version: 1.1.23-15
Severity: minor
Tags: patch

The NEWS file contains unclear wording. I suggest instead of:

-
  * Port/Listen and Browsing parameters are splitted from newer
/etc/cups/cupsd.conf. You can modify /etc/cups/cups.d/ports.conf
and /etc/cups/cups.d/browsing.conf by 'dpkg-reconfigure cupsys'
or by hand.
If you'd like to use this feature, replace Port/Listen
line of /etc/cups/cupsd.conf with
'Include /etc/cups/cups.d/ports.conf' and replace Browsing line
with 'Include /etc/cups/cups.d/browse.conf'.
(Parameters are already taken from old /etc/cups/cupsd.conf
 automatically.)
-
to write:
-
  * Port/Listen and Browsing parameters have been split off of
/etc/cups/cupsd.conf into separate files. You can modify
/etc/cups/cups.d/ports.conf and
/etc/cups/cups.d/browsing.conf by runing
'dpkg-reconfigure cupsys' or by hand.
If you'd like to use these features, then replace the lines
'Port/Listen' inside /etc/cups/cupsd.conf with
'Include /etc/cups/cups.d/ports.conf' and 'Browsing' with
'Include /etc/cups/cups.d/browse.conf'.
(These settings are being moved automatically from the old
/etc/cups/cupsd.conf config file to the new files
 /etc/cups/cups.d/ports.conf and /etc/cups/cups.d/browse.conf)

Bug#372254: hylafax-server: Access control file not mode 600

2006-06-09 Thread Ross Boylan
Package: hylafax-server
Version: 2:4.3.0-3
Severity: normal

I've been unable to access my server, even from the same host. The
logs always show this when I make the attempt:
Jun 8 23:05:15 corn HylaFAX[17273]: Access control file not mode 600; access
denied.

I did edit /etc/hylafax/hosts.hfaxd as root, and put it under rcs
control. This has led to problems in the past, and initially the file
had world read access and root:root ownership. I changed these things
and restarted, without effect.

I noticed the /var/spool/hylafax/etc/hosts.hfaxd was not being updated
with the new ownership and permissions. I changed it manually and
restarted. Still no luck.

I ran a default install, ran faxsetup (and thus faxaddmodem) as root,
and edited hosts.hfaxd. I don't think I've touched it otherwise.
Unfortunately, I didn't try accessing it earlier.

As a side issue, probably the copy scripts (from /etc to /var/spool)
should work harder to keep the ownership and permissions in sync. But
I've dealt with that manually, and the problem persists.

This is a special plain paper type specifically for Canon PIXMA
printers. This seems to be equally useful on other models of Canon
printer. It seems that the Canon printers all print at a lower
density than other printers, so this paper type was created to
 increase the print density.

So you are saying, without buying that special plain paper the printout
quality will always be lower compared to other printers? If that is the
case, we can close the bug report.

If selecting the PIXMA paper type in the printer driver should be
sufficient for print quality similar to other printers we are not quite
there, and the bug report should remain open.

Bug#348213: gstreamer0.8-x: Cannot use xv as output correctly

2006-06-09 Thread Hongzheng Wang

Hi,

I'm really sorry ... I misunderstood you. Although hardly to believe,
I made a wrong reply. Since I, recently, reported a bug about xv of
totem (see 365127), I had thought you mean that bug :(

For 348213, it seems that this bug has been solved after some upgrades
of xorg. But I don't remember exactly when it was solved. Thank you
very much.

is changed. Even built with debug information, gdb cannot provide any
useful information since the application does not crash or any other
 abnormal behavior at all.

In #348213, you mentionned a *crash* when using Xv in the gstreamer
 based Totem.

It's probably a xvimagesink/gstreamer or Xorg problem, but I would like
to confirm this with a backtrace with debugging symbols. Perhaps you
can rebuild gnome-media instead? Or gstreamer0.10-x?

If you can't, I'll build a debugging package in pbuilder for you.

Bug#372259: user-mode-linux: the uml_switch control file is not been searched as in uml-utilities package

2006-06-09 Thread alex bodnaru
Package: user-mode-linux
Version: 2.6.16-1um-2
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable

hello,

this is a change in required parameters that left me with no networking
in uml.
i'm using uml with eth0=daemon option. if no uml_switch control file is
specified, linux has previously (probably) searched it as configured in
the uml-utilities package, while now it searches it in the loacation
default for uml_switch upstream itself.
while it's grave (the uml networking is quite vital), there is a simple
workaround: specify the exact control file location with the daemon arg.

Bug#232058: cutter doesn't recognize connections on 2.6 kernel

I do not really know if this problem 2.6 kernel-specific or not...

I've looked into this and fixed it. The problem was that some fields
were added to /proc/net/ip_conntrack for 2.6 and cutter wasn't able
to parse them.

I've attached 2 /proc/net/ip_conntrack dumps, one from a 2.4 machine
and one from a 2.6 box.

Also attached is a patch that fixes the parsing issues.
Unfortunately I couldn't test it on 2.6, since I don't have a router
running linux 2.6. I've only tested the parsing part on 2.6.

On 2.4 everything continues to work fine with my patch. Parsing
still works and cutting the connection also functions. On 2.6
parsing works well to, and as far as I could test it, killing
connections also works.

Blars, do you care to upload this (probably alongside with the
cleanup work I submitted in #372251)?

Cheers,
Christian Aichinger

Bug#371882: a few minutes with gnome virgins

2006-06-09 Thread Loïc Minier

thought this the best place to post as i personally do not use fedora,
don't really like bugzilla, and don't think redhat developers take
user feedback very seriously. regardless, the gnome interface is
virtually the same on both fedora and debian anyway.

Oh I didn't take it as humor neither, I was just putting the average
fun that working on Debian can be with the particular non-funnyness of
receiving reports that are not even Debian based.

Anyway, I've forwarded your report upstream
thanks. i am trying to be a *good* user.

It's nice to report bugs in Debian, typically crashes, missing files,
erroneous dirs etc. The more high-level the claim, the less power
Debian has upon it. This is because Debian doesn't have the man power
to rewrite large amount of code to solve all high-level bugs, and also
because Debian doesn't want to diverge from upstream.

not many people get the
chance to observe folks during their first experience or just don't
care enough to report about it.

 Indeed.

Would also be nice if you could file such high-level enhancements
 requests upstream.
i was under the impression that it is the part of a debian developer's
job to ensure such is accomplished. i'd rather work with only the
debian bts rather than deal with various bugzillas and forums with
different user names, passwords, and developer mindsets. at least
debian developers are fairly reliable and usually someone will pick up
the slack if bugs are ignored.

Debian's BTS indeed serves the purposes you mention, that is you don't
need to know about every BTS of software we package, and we will
 forward bugs.

However, and this is what my initial response was all about, the matter
you bring up is quite high-level, and is absolutely non-technical.
This is typically something that can only aim at improving GNOME at
large, not Debian in particular, and requires interaction with GNOME
 folks.
You describe yourself that the experience happened on Fedora systems,
proving that the matter at hand is not Debian specific but relates to
GNOME. IMO, your report was a report to improve GNOME from the very
beginning, and never was to improve Debian otherwise you would have
made the experience under Debian, not Fedora.

I feel this is an abuse of the Debian BTS.

It is listed as valid candidate (2 days), it may have migrated to testing
already, and the packages.* interfaces might not have picked that up yet.

As I noticed on my Testing hosts, it indeed migrated yesterday.

Bug#372261: kernel-2.6.8-2-686-smp: kernel panics when running libmicro flock tests

2006-06-09 Thread Ivan Alexandrovich

Package: kernel-2.6.8-2-686-smp
Version: kernel-image-2.6.8-2-686-smp
Severity: normal

libMicro is benchmarking tool that was originally used for identifying
performance bottlenecks in Solaris 10 kernel and system library
implementation. When running a series of tests for flock syscall kernel
panics happen with ~30% probability.

How to reproduce:
- Libmicro version 0.3.0 source tarball was taken from
 http://www.opensolaris.org/os/community/performance/libmicro/
- it was compiled simply by running 'make' with no special options
- then the test suit was launched by 'bench' script

Kernel panics were encountered on two different machines:

Scenario 1:
Hardware configuration:
Processors: 2 x AMD Opteron 246 (2Ghz)
Motherboard: Iwill DK8S2 (AMD-8131/8111)
Memory: 2 x 512Mb DDR-400
HDD: Seagate ST380011A (80Gb)
Filesystem: reiserfs 3.6
Distribution: Debian sarge 3.1r2
kernel: kernel-image-2.6.8-2-686-smp2.6.8-16sarge1
Problem descrition: when running tests c_flock_ multiple cascade_flock
processes hang waiting for event that never happens.
Runinng killall cascade_flock brings the following:
   Printing eip: c0f06f20
   *pde=
   [c01a62562] work_notifysig +0x13/0x15
Unable to handle kernel NULL pointer dereference at virtual
   address 0001
   Note:
After replacing kernel by linux-image-2.6.16-2-686-smp (2.6.16-13bpo1)
from backports.org this problem never happened.

Scenario 2:
Hardware configuration:
Processor: Athlon 64 x2 3800+ DDR-400,
Motherboard: Asus K8Ne
Memory: 2 x 1Gb DDR-400
HDD: Western Digital WD1600
Filesystem: ext3, reiserfs 3.6
Distribution: Debian sarge 3.1r2
kernel: kernel-image-2.6.8-2-686-smp2.6.8-16sarge1
Problem description: when running test c_flock_10 got
Kernel panic: attempting to free local with active block list

Of course situation with running benchmarking tool is much different
from common OS usage pattern. So this report was sent just in hope
that this information may be somewhat useful if the situation
described has something to do with kernel stability in general.
If it's not then please just ignore it.

Sincerelly,
Ivan

Please note that 1.1.23-15 never made it to Testing. Instead, we have

Oh, actually that's from the text I got when in installed 1.2.1-2. I don't
know why the bug report indicates version 1.1.23-15 - probably I was too
quick. Anyway - I have checked the bug reports against cupsys and there was
not mention of any problem/fix of the NEWS file - so I very much assume that
it still applies.

Bummer. It would be great if you could also try with the DRM from DRI
CVS; that seems to be necessary with an R300 class card on amd64 here.
If you don't know how to go about that, I can send you test binaries,
but I'll need to know the exact package version of the kernel you're
  running.

I'm not sure if I really did answer you but just in case:

The kernel I'm running is the one from the Debian
 pacakage linux-image-2.6.16-2-amd64-k8.

I could build it myself if you send me the driver source with instructions.

First of all, you could try a 2.6.17-rc kernel from experimental. If
that doesn't help, see

Bug#372266: gstreamer-properties needs to also set gst0.10 settings

2006-06-09 Thread Thomas Viehmann
Package: gnome-media
Severity: important
Version: 2.12.0-4

Hi,

gstreamer-properties configures gstreamer0.8 only and there is
(appearantly) not indication of this or hint what to do about gstreamer0.10.
As applications (e.g. quodlibet) already use the latter and take their
settings from gconf, this leeds to rather opaque failures. Please do
provide support for setting both gstreamer0.8 and 0.10 to help
transitioning or at least warn the user that the settings changes don't
apply to gst0.10.

Kind regards

Bug#351910: hostapd: does not work with madwifi anymore

 Hi,
Sorry for taking so long to respond to this bug report, even though I've

I wasn't sure of what to do and I was hoping that the -old/-ng situation
would resolve itself with the passing of time.
As madwifi upstream now recommends -ng as the stable version and
considers -old as deprecated/obsolete, I've decided to support only -ng
in hostapd by including the respective headers in the source package, as
 before.
Kel, I presume that this is OK with you since you've done the same for
 wpasupplicant?
I'm currently preparing an upload that supports the stable 0.9.0 madwifi
(-ng) version. I hope that is OK with everyone.
Since I reported the bug I also switched to madwifi-ng (and the newest
hostapd version 0.5.3) and everything is working fine for me know.
So I guess you can keep building against madwifi-ng

Bug#372270: smbclient: smbspool's kerberos support is broken by CUPS 1.2 unless chmoded 0700

2006-06-09 Thread Paul TBBle Hampson
Package: smbclient
Version: 3.0.22-1
Severity: wishlist

The problem is as follows:
CUPS 1.2 setuids its backends to a safe user (lp on Debian) unless the
backend is chmod 0700.

CUPS 1.1 ran its backends as whatever user cupsd was running as (root on
Debian)

(Apparently this change wasn't important enough to appear in the
CUPS 1.2 changelogs)

/usr/bin/smbspool (called via symlink from /usr/lib/cups/backends/smb)
will not run setuid (libsmb rejects this, quite sensibly)

As noted in #371143, RunAsUser in /etc/cupsd.conf has no effect as of
CUPS 1.2.

smbspool needs to be root to read mode 600 /tmp/krb5cc*, to be able to
submit print jobs to Active Directory-based print servers without
putting the username and password into the Device URI.

The problem is of course that making smbspool 0700 in the .deb means it
can't be used by non-priviliged users, which is pretty much everyone
except those trying to use the kinda-hacky kerberos support in smbspool.

So this becomes wishlist... And mybe slightly documentation for the
next poor soul to spend all afternoon beating cups with a stick. ^_^

Bug#372208: [pkg-wpa-devel] Bug#372208: missing patches from wpasupplicant

If these patches are for the development version of wpa_supplicant,
should they not be merged into upstream CVS, so that next time I take a
snapshot, there is no need to carry along a large patch series?

Severity: normal

This is no defect, rather a wishlist item, IMHO.

wpasupplicant is missing a number of patches which can be found at:
http://cvs.fedora.redhat.com/viewcvs/devel/wpa_supplicant/

for me personally most important is that one (which makes wep w/ orinoco
based cards work again):

wpa_supplicant-wep-key-fix.patch

Please provide a distinct bug report for that issue.

furthermore I applied:
wpa_supplicant-assoc-timeout.patch
wpa_supplicant-auth-fallback-v4.patch

Why?

I am not sure about the others:

wpa_supplicant-0.4.8-madwifi-ioctl-reorder.patch
wpa_supplicant-0.4.8-madwifi-privacy-invoked-fix.patch
wpa_supplicant-ctrl-iface-ap-scan.patch
wpa_supplicant-ctrl-iface-hide-keys.patch
wpa_supplicant-driver-wext-debug.patch
wpa_supplicant-ssid-len-fix.patch

What are they for? Why do I need to apply them? Have they been sent to
Jouni?

Are you positive these bugs are for the 0.5 series of wpa_supplicant? If
so, i would rather allow upstream to take care of them during their
normal development process, unless they are _absolutely_ critical.

Kel.

Yes, that is fine. I am preparing the new madwifi codebase for upload to
unstable this weekend (although it will rot in NEW for many weeks, I
suspect). I was just kinda dumbfounded that the hostapd package dropped
support for old madwifi a long time before the new codebase became
usable (but I did get over it ;-), or close to being in the debian archive.

The offer still stands, I am more than happy to provide madwifi header
dpatches on demand for the hostapd and wpasupplicant packages for debian.

Thanks, Kel.

I guess this error was triggered because you don't use a POSIX compliant
syntax in your debian/scripts/. On this buildd, /bin/sh is linked to
/bin/dash, so bash specific syntax is not understood.

   Depends: python2.3-tk (= 2.4.3) | python-tk (= 2.4.3), python2.3-tk

There are three ways this dependency would be satisfied -- a real
  python2.3-tk package with a version = 2.4.3, a python-tk package = 2.4.3
that provides python2.3-tk, or a python-tk package which doesn't provide
  python2.3-tk plus a python2.3-tk package 2.4.3 which is co-installable
with python-tk. The last of these is obviously incorrect, but I don't see
any fix for that which isn't worse (except implementing versioned
  Provides...).

AJ points out that the obvious fix is to have idle-python2.3 also Conflict:
 python2.3-tk ( 2.4.3).

yes, that looks fine. Although in the long term, dropping the
versioned packages for idle makes sense as well.

Bug#372280: adduser fails: configuration error - unknown item

2006-06-09 Thread Ian Bruce
Package: adduser
Version: 3.87

adduser produces a lot of error messages about unrecognized
parameters, which may or may not be harmless. This may indicate a
conflict with some version of another package, but it's not clear to me
which one.

related packages:

passwd : v1:4.0.15-10
debconf : v1.5.1

The first example below shows adduser being invoked directly from the
command line. The other two examples show the same problem occurring
when apt-get tries to create system userids while installing other
packages.

Bug#372276: fbi depends on liblircclient0

2006-06-09 Thread Hilmar Preusse
Package: fbi
Version: 2.01-1.2sarge1
Severity: minor

Hi,

When I tried to upgrade the package to 2.01-1.2sarge1 I noticed that
the package depends on liblircclient0, which was not the case for
2.01-1.2. As the version is only a security update I assume this to
be an unwanted change. It is not mentioned in the changelog.
I setting Moritz Muehlenhoff into Cc, as he prepared the upload.

Thanks,

Bug#312575:

2006-06-09 Thread Stephen Gran
This one time, at band camp, Geoff Denning said:
I've discovered both the cause and workaround for this problem, as I
encountered the same bug myself this morning.

The debian package elegantly creates a
 /etc/mail/m4/clamav-milter.m4configuration file that contains the
 INPUT_MAIL_FILTER specifying the
location of the milter socket file. The location of the socket file is
correct, and actually does correspond to the file configured in
/etc/init.d/clamav-milter. However, when clamav-milter checks for the
INPUT_MAIL_FILTER directive in sendmail, it only checks sendmail.mc, and
ignores all the included configuration files in the m4 directory. The
workaround is to move the INPUT_MAIL_FILTER directive from the
/etc/mail/m4/clamav-milter.m4 file to the /etc/mail/sendmail.cf file (and
delete the /etc/mail/m4/clamav-milter.m4 file). Technically, this should
probably be considered a clamav-milter bug, but for now, the package should
probably add the INPUT_MAIL_FILTER directive to the sendmail.cf file.

Ah, I see. Well, I can't directly touch sendmail.cf or sendmail.mc from
the clamav-milter package. All I can do is try to make integration
easy. I will try to take a look at the code this weekend, and see if I
can't com eup with some way around it. The best may just be to get rid
of the test in the milter itself. I've always thought it was a bit
unnecessary, myself.

Thanks for the report,

Installing libio-socket-ssl-perl solved the problem.

The release cycle for 5.2.3 will start anytime soon, probably today.

Bug#372278: xserver-xorg-input-all: using clipboard with 8 bits characters doesn't work

2006-06-09 Thread Bartosz Fenski aka fEnIo
Package: xserver-xorg-input-all
Severity: normal

Hash: SHA1

Hello.

I'm not sure which package should I choose for this particular problem
cause I'm not aware of internal mechanismes in X.org.

Please forward/reassign this bugreport to the correct place if this is
wrong one.

The problem is when I try to mark some text (in Firefox for example) and it
contains some characters like apostrophe wrote using entities like rsquo;.

X clipboard seems to have problems with such characters and it's not
possible to paste marked text to the other application like xterm.

I suppose it's problem with UTF handling, but it's not possible to paste
even broken text without that 8 bit characters. Middle mouse button
doesn't paste anything. Maybe it should simply strip 8 bits characters and
paste only these that are correct for 8bit encoding.

fEnIo

They were, so your code works just fine in the postinst script
  Try to reconfigure the package:

debtest:~# dpkg --configure -a
Setting up zaptel (1.2.5-1) ...
Zaptel cards initial configuration: Notice: Configuration file is
/etc/zaptel.conf

line 0: Unable to open master device '/dev/zap/ctl'

1 error(s) detected

invoke-rc.d: initscript zaptel, action start failed.
dpkg: error processing zaptel (--configure):
subprocess post-installation script returned error exit status 1
Errors were encountered while processing:
 zaptel

So what I think actually allowed me to do the install of zaptel was that I
forced the install of the compiled
zaptel-modules-2.6.15-1-686 source by doing something like:

# dpkg --ignore-depends=zaptel -i
zaptel-modules-2.6.15-1-686_1.2.5-1+2.6.15-8_i386.deb
# modprobe ztdummy

That forced the install of the modules I compiled, and then loaded up the dummy
driver which probably now listens on the
/dev/zap/ctl device that the failed install of the zaptel package created.
Then upon reinstalling zaptel, it was able to successfully open the
/dev/zap/ctl device and configure itself.

So the fix then, to not try and start up zaptel automatically at the end of
postinst, OR start it up but force a success return code
if it does fail to start?
Maybe with an appropriate error message?

It's a bit of a chicken and egg problem because you need the drivers for the
zaptel startup to work, but the zaptel install needs to
happen before you install the drivers...

2006-06-09 Thread John Hughes

Thunderbird/Firefox c seem to want some crazy aliases for cursor names, e.g.

Maybe this is a bug in the mozilla stuff, but some cursor themes,

Bug#323099: License of wget.texi: suggest removal of invariant sections

2006-06-09 Thread Don Armstrong
Just wanted to touch bases with you again to make sure that what we
are requesting was reasonably clear, and the reasoning behind it was
understandable.

If you have any additional questions, please let me know.

Just in case it was lost, I suggest changing:

which would resolve the (admittedly rather nitpicky) issues which
would keep Debian from being able to distribute the wget texinfo
documentation in the stable release. [In case it wasn't clear, #323099
is a bug that needs to be fixed before we can release; there are only
two solutions available to Noèl Köthe: the change I've suggested, or
removal of the GFDL documentation.]

Bug#372289: mutt: Detects wrong mime type on some .tar.gz, resulting in corrupt files

2006-06-09 Thread Thomas Bleher
Package: mutt
Version: 1.5.11+cvs20060403-1

When trying to attach
http://www.cip.ifi.lmu.de/~bleher/mutt-mime-bug.tar.gz , mutt assigns
the file the type and encoding text/plain, quoted, utf-8, even though the
file is a perfectly valid tar.gz - file(1) reports gzip compressed data,
from Unix and I can unpack the contents with tar.
This wrong encoding causes the file to be corrupted so it cannot be
unpacked by the receiver.
I often send .tar.gz files using this mutt config so this seems peculiar
to this .tar.gz.
Just to be sure I also tried it on a fresh account without any user
config, and mutt had the same problem.

This is on an Ubuntu Dapper system, but with the Debian mutt package, so
I thought I'd report it here.

Thomas

Bug#372278: xserver-xorg-input-all: using clipboard with 8 bits characters doesn't work

On Fri, Jun 09, 2006 at 11:02:01AM +0200, Bartosz Fenski aka fEnIo wrote:

Define 'broken'.

X actually has no clipboard role. What happens is this:
  * you select something in Firefox,
  * Firefox informs X that it now owns the PRIMARY selection,
  * you middle-click in xterm,
  * xterm queries X as to who owns the PRIMARY selection,
  * Firefox and xterm do type negotiation, and the most acceptable type
is sent to xterm.

So you'd have to be looking at what went on in the type negotiation
between Firefox and xterm.

I assume you're pasting UTF-8 quotation marks (‘’´) into a non-UTF-8
terminal, and things go south? If so, it's a bug in either Firefox for
not gracefully dealing with other encodings, or xterm.

Cheers,
Daniel

Bug#371195: [Pkg-db-devel] Bug#371195: libdb4.4: segfault when libdb4.3-dev is installed

2006-06-09 Thread Josef Spillner
[Repost to bugs.d.o, sorry I forgot this earlier]

Hi,

Alle 20:00, mercoledì, 7. giugno 2006, hai scritto:
When libdb4.4 is installed, it doesn't prevent libdb4.3-dev to be
installed at the same time. However, this combination is guaranteed to
cause a segfault on the DB_ENV-open() call.

Huh? How so? Could you provide an example program?

I don't have a stripped-down example yet but it happens when you use the
sources for the ggz-server package, e.g. from:
http://ftp.belnet.be/packages/ggzgamingzone/ggz/0.0.13/ggz-server-0.0.13.tar.gz

You need to apt-get install libggz-dev before testing this.
It will take some weeks before ggz-server hits sid, sorry for having
to ./configure by yourself, running it without arguments should select the
db4 backend by default.

Apparently some struct changed so that the DB_ENV-open pointer itself is NULL
even after db_env_create() returns successfully.

In our project, we always have a tight dependency between the -dev package and
the related library package. This drops a bit of flexibility but gives a
whole lot of stability instead.

Bug#371197: want cleanup only / no download mode for update

2006-06-09 Thread Goswin von Brederlow
Bernhard R. Link [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes:

 * Goswin Brederlow [EMAIL PROTECTED] [060607 19:25]:
When mirror space is tight and you haven't updated for a few days the
space needed to download all uploads before the obsolete debs are
deleted can be too much. It would be nice if one could skip
downloading debs and just clean up or cleanup before downloading.

That's a relatively tough one that would need quite some changes and
imposes a high propability of inconsistent data when done poorly.
(I think the only sane way would be to remove all packages to be
upgraded in a first step from the distributions, as keeping the package
descriptions while the file references already deleted leads to
inevitable inconsistencies. Then suppressing a export of that stripped
down distributions (which is easy), followed by the downloading and
installation of the new packages, with the hard part to also export
those targets where only deletions occoured and no new things were
added. With this the worst thing that can happen when errors occour is
packages vanishing instead of getting upgraded.)

Also note that when deleting things first, any client trying to use the
mirror while things are downloaded (which would be relatively lengthy in
this case when this matters), will either not find any Packages files
(when they are deleted first) or get Packages files listing files no
longer downloadable (as already deleted)). So I really think getting
more disk space is very adviseable, even when this feature gets
 implemented.

I'm totaly fine with removing all packages that are no longer in the
new Packages file _and_ exporting the index. Sure packages will be
missing then until the updates come in but I can live with that. I
have my local mirror and ftp.de.debian.org in sources.list anyway so
there is a fallback.

I would implement this as a seperate reprepro cleanup command that
updates all Packages/Sources files but then only runs the '-' rule in
updates. That should be simple to implement and make it clear enough
that to users that they are purposefully removing packages without
updates in place.

Bug#372123: please check the timestamp of ListHooks for updates

ListHook if the timestamp of the hook is newer than the filtered file.

 I'm unsure about this.
I fear that this will cause more confusion than help. The timestamp of
the command can be checked, but not any data files it uses to get this,
so it will sometimes recognize changes, sometimes need the explicit
 notification.
I'm currently considering the need for the explicit setting when
anything like this should be taken into account a more clean approach.
(Especially as working with timestamps always gives funny results with
 time-skews).

Bug#372280: [Adduser-devel] Bug#372280: adduser fails: configuration error - unknown item

This one time, at band camp, Ian Bruce said:

You have these directives set in /etc/login.defs. My understanding is
that they have been deprecated for some time, but now they create a
warning message. This is not a bug in adduser (in fact, I'm not sure
it's a bug at all - programs do change the acceptable options in their
conf files over time, and it's not a good idea to automatedly overwrite
an edited config file on upgrade).

Others, I leave it to you whether or not you want to reassign this to
login (the package responsible for login.defs) or just close it. I can
see arguments both ways.

Take care,

Bug#372284: umount should be able to recursively umount filesystems

2006-06-09 Thread Roger Leigh
Package: mount
Version: 2.12r-10
Severity: wishlist

When you have a whole tree of mounted filesystems (for example, a
chroot environment):

$ mount | grep /srv/chroot/sid
/dev/mapper/hda_vg-sid_chroot on /srv/chroot/sid type ext3 (rw)
/dev/pts on /srv/chroot/sid/dev/pts type none (rw,bind)
tmpfs on /srv/chroot/sid/dev/shm type tmpfs (rw)
/dev/mapper/hda_vg-home on /srv/chroot/sid/home type ext3 (rw,quota,user_xattr)
/tmp on /srv/chroot/sid/tmp type none (rw,bind)

it would be very useful to be able to unmount all these filesystems in
one go, for example:

  umount -r /srv/chroot/sid

which would umount all of the filesystems below this mountpoint.

It would also useful for umounting --rbind mounts (but would need
#354298 fixing first).

I do not object to you reporting this, and I _really_ do appreciate your

I just do not know how to react to a report that basically informed us
that Fedora have a patch series against wpa_supplicant (no version) that
fixes some problems (that are not described). Just need some more
 specific information please.

Well I somehow assumed you read the networkmanager mailinglist ... which
is how I found this 'bug' but of course this is wpasupplicant so I
screwed up.

Anyway the bug I'd like to report is orinoco does not work w/ wep nm:

http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=343112

and when I read
http://mail.gnome.org/archives/networkmanager-list/2006-June/msg2.html

and went to http://cvs.fedora.redhat.com/viewcvs/devel/wpa_supplicant/
I found the above mentioned patches applied them to the experimental
version and nm was working (i.e. the wep key got set!). As the wep patch
is a one liner I guess it should be applied, and yes this bug is there
in wpasupplicant version 0.4.8 - to cvs-current + the wep patch will
still apply. I am not sure about the others and I don't know whether
they were necessary.

Thats all I wanted/have to say.

I suspect the same issue as in Debian Bug #352585.

I think this might be libgc1c2 bug, since

1) downgrading libgc1c2 to version 1:6.6-2 makes this error disappear.
2) rebuilding libgc1c2 (apt-get source libgc1c2; sudo apt-get build-dep
libgc1c2; debuild -uc -us) fails at the `make check' stage.
3) there are other applications which work with libgc1c2 1:6.6-2 but
   fail with 1:6.7-1 (see #369608)

Best regards,
  Alexei.

I just have a slightly insignificant question: is there a reason for not

Bug#366948: xfig can't find fonts

2006-06-09 Thread Steve Langasek
tags 366948 -fixed
thanks

This bug isn't actually fixed. The NMUed gsfonts-x11 package does run the
correct update commands for the new directory, but the reason gsfonts-x11 is
breaking people's fonts is that it's failing to clean up after itself in the
*old* directory -- leaving a fonts.dir file in place referring to
non-existent fonts and generally making a mess of the font path.

It looks like this also needs a separate bug on dh_installxfonts, which
fails to handle this possibility in its current maintainer script snippets;
but it still requires gsfonts-x11 to clean up after what the old version of
the package may have left behind.

Wow. Now that is a bug report with some good information to work with.

Lets see if we can whip up a wpasupplicant package (which i plan to request
for upload this weekend anyway) with the fix/patch applied. Would you be
willing to test it out before it hits the actual archive? I do not have
orinoco hardware (and I don't think Reinhard does either).

sure, ppc deb or tgz w/ patch .dsc are fine.

This bug is my fault as I submitted the lockold patch and thought
I had it tested. I am sorry for the inconvenience.

I think adding lockold to BSD and memtest is good.

Please consider the attached patch as well. It also fixes the
issue, but the proposed change to memtest and BSD should still be
done.
