Bug#365672: RFP: xetex - An extension of TeX with Unicode and OpenType support
Dear Kohda-san! Good to hear from you. How was the summer in Japan? If it was as hot as the July in Europe it must have been very bad, together with the humitity! Some comment to xetex: On Fre, 25 Aug 2006, Atsuhito Kohda wrote: From curiosity, I've packaged xetex 0.995 (and xdvipdfmx 0.3) for Debian/unstable. (I don't mean to maintain it though. We will see. and I tried to follow TeX-Policy as far as I can and used dh_installtex (excellent tool!) for the first time. I've felt strong need to update Yes, it helps a lot. One point I found in your package: You don't create a link xelatex - xetex in /usr/bin. Has to be done by hand. But it would modify language.dat (Policy violation) because, with teTeX, huhyphn.tex and srhyphc.tex caused problem with xetex (seems well-known problem). Yes, it is, see discussion on the texlive mailing list. Is there any smart way to do the same without violating Policy? Hard, very hard ATM. Changing the language.dat, hmm. With TeXLive there is no problem (nor no Policy violation). Well, you should conflict with texlive-lang-hungarian and texlive-lang-other, otherwise it breaks. http://www1.pm.tokushima-u.ac.jp/~kohda/tex/xetex/sample_linux.tar.gz (CJK, Arabic, Hindi, Ethiopic documents etc.) Thanks, after some changes to the font names I was able to compile several of the docs on my texlive system. Bug#384248: installation-report: Almost successful Etch installation with di-beta3
As for clock, I think you didn't get my point. I don't complain about what installed system thought of my clock (whether they were set to UTC or local time). I just want to say that hardware clock must have not been changed in any case without reliable response from NTP server. Debian has to show local time according to selected timezone and UTC setting in /etc/default/rcS, but it doesn't have to touch hw clock at all when hw clock is the only more or less reliable time source. Well, D-I actually doesn't use any NTP server. So, if somethign bad happened with some NTP stuff changing your hw clock, I'm afraid that the bug doesn't belgon to D-I. Right. For Russian, console-cyrillic should be installed. I know about this package, but shouldn't it be installed automatically by D-I if I select Russian key-map then? Nope. It is installed if you choose Russian as language. But, as another recent thread did show, there are some glitches with this as the localechooser fnish-install script seems to overwrite console-cyrillic settings. I have various USB devices connected to my PC. Logs about some of them always appear after bor login: prompt. Looks very unprofessional although I'm used to unexpected Linux kernel messages on the console. This has nothing to do with the installer, I'm afraid. BTW, I also don't like Linux kernel messages at the console. Probably something to set in syslog stuff, which I never succeeded to find. I agree this is pretty annoying. http://www.debian.org/doc/manuals/reference/ch-tips.en.html#s8.6.8 But IMO users should not bother about such things. Thanks for pointing me to this...:-)this shows that even more than 10 years of Debian use means that one still has things to learn..:-) If you actually do not agree with the default settings of klogd, I suggest you report the bug to the klogd package. The decision of changing that setting belongs to the klogd maintainer. Anyway, thanks, again, as I was seeking for that information for a while..:-) All the remaining does not really belong to the installer and should be reported against the relevant packages. Well, D-I is D-I itself + the integration of various packages, and I think D-I team should pay attention to the smoothness of this integration and the final result. D-I + installed system is the first Sure, in an idealistic world. But we even don't have the needed manpower to process issues that really pertain to the installer so, except when issues are obviously identifiable (see above), we cannot really make the very hard work of analyzing all install reports to dispatch issues. Sorry for that. Just see the bugs reported to installation-reports to get a picture..:-) BTW, who decides what packages are included on netinst CD? The maintainers of these package, by making them part of the base system. Of course, the Debian policy has strict requirements for a package to be part of the base system. I believe average non-technical PC users had no chances to overcome this major obstacle of conecting Debian to the Internet via USB ADSL modem. What could be done here? eciadsl (is this the only available package for USB DSL modems?) + pppoe + dependencies should be included on netinst CD. eciadsl documentation should be improved, and D-I should detect DSL modems automatically. Ideally, (from the user's point of view), all firmware and other binaries for the package should be included as well, so that Internet connection could be set-up during the installation without the need to manually download packages from foreign sites. I know this is controversial topic, which is currently discussed on some Debian mailing list. Yep. A lot...:-) About USB DSL stuff, I have no clues. My only experience is that most of these bloody USB DSL modems require bloody firmware to be loaded, which is usually non free stuff...:-(. I wish I could configure console beep sound during installation so that my wife didn't get angry about beeping through filesystem at 2am, and I needn't look for 2 year old notes with magic escape sequnces for the beep. From my point of view these basic issues should be handled during the installation. Who else but D-I team should take care of these? When the whole system is being installed I don't know what exact packages provide what functionality. So for me as a user any issue not directly associated (in my mind) with particular package looks like distribution flaw. And if the number of such issues reaches some critical mass, a user will choose to try different distribution instead of spending time on filling numerous bug reports. Maybe..:-). The difference in Debian is that cllued users can help to solve out these usability issues. I have indeed no idea about the Right Way to enable/disable the console beep. This is probably done in the user's environment...so disabling it for the created user would indeed mean that the deault environment for users

Bug#384248: installation-report: Almost successful Etch installation with di-beta3
I guess I didn't, if I understood your question correctly. In other words I used non-localised D-I interface. So, your suggestion becomes to install stuff to support the rendering of cyrillic at the console when one selects the Russian keymap. That would actually mean a major design change in D-I where we actually conider that localization-related stuff is driven by the language chosen during the installation. Again, by choosing English as install language, you deserve what you get : a standard Linux environment which needs, as we all know, some tweaking for being able to render non Latin languages at the console. So, I really think that we will not try fixing this. signature.asc Description: Digital signature

Bug#380105: Show current hour in hardware clock question
That information has no value ( it is noise ) It is not noise, it is very valuable information, because with it, you can immediately check that your clock is set correctly or not, and if it is set to UTC or not. Ideally, we could even have a clock setting dialog here or something. Yes, right. This is currently the answer to this please show current hour wishlist bug. We should *first* offer some way to set the clock before we display the current hour. So, indeed, what we need is someone working on a way to implement this (probably in clock-setup, of course). That would indeed be a very valuable stuff to add, especially for installing brand new machines where the HW clock is usually wrongly set when it is shipped by the manufacturer. signature.asc Description: Digital signature

Moreover it is portable to Win32 and thus may be more widely adopted. I don't think luaforge was very well established when I started writing with lua. Since you know better than me the code, could you please compare the two libs? The summery you've given already seems fair. It seems that the one I packaged lacks chmod (It is not portable to win32). I think it should go to luaposix, next lib on my todo list. Moreover your lib lacks locking functions, that are portable at least to win32. Right. In case you want to package your lib too I can point you to the policy I'm writing (it becoming really easy to do a lua lib package) and give you svn access to the repo (pkg-lua). I'd look forward to seeing that. Right now I have packages of my two lua libraries already via http://www.steve.org.uk/apt/ P.S. Yes, I know. I copied the ITP from the luaexpat one and I forgot to change some fields :( No problem. I'll be looking forward to working with your lua packages in the future. The posix library I remember looking at looked non-free, but it could well be the case we're talking about different libraries! The discussion about the name of Taiwan happened around April 2004 in -devel The discussion about the name of Macedonia happened in second half of 2004 in -boot, IIRC. When the Taiwan issue raised up, it took up to a DPL decision to finally settle the issue to use the common names of countries in case the official name implies high controversial and political issues with no real solution. For Macedonia, the compromise is accepted by most of the two parties, namely the Greek and Macedonian users. So, we will definitely *not* fix this. Don't try to convince me as my own opinion was using the official names. This also affects the MYSQL struct, since it contains st_mysql_options. Now, libdbd-mysql-perl has this in dbdimp.h: struct imp_dbh_st { dbih_dbc_t com; /* MUST be first element in structure */ MYSQL mysql; int has_transactions; /* boolean indicating support for * transactions, currently always * TRUE for MySQL and always FALSE * for mSQL. */ [...] so the grown MYSQL struct overlaps with has_transactions. When run with libmysqlclient15off 5.0.24-1, has_transactions gets reset to 0 and the result is 'Transactions not supported by database'. Recompiling libdbd-mysql-perl helps, as the API has not changed in an incompatible way. In my understanding, the right fix is to bump the soname or to revert the struct st_mysql_options change. Do you have any plan to patch your product to make it compatible again with Plone? Thanks, and have a nice day. Bug#384543: No mouse in GUI with Logitech receiver
Philipp Kern wrote: Package: installation-reports Architecture: i386 Mouse support was missing for me when I tried the GUI installer (beta 3 netinst CD image). I use a Logitech Wireless (not Bluetooth) USB adapter (ID 046d:c50c) for both keyboard and mouse. The keyboard did work fine, but the mouse cursor was sticky. (And by the way: How to get those expanders to expand with the keyboard?) have you tried using a separate usb mouse instead of logitech mouse to see if the problem is still reproducible? The shortcuts for tree expansion/collapse are + and - key, as in every GTK app. cheers Attilio -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Bug#365672: RFP: xetex - An extension of TeX with Unicode and OpenType support
On Fre, 25 Aug 2006, Frank Küster wrote: Next version will include it. I think about making a intermediate release of texlive packages with 2006~svnYYMMDD so that we can get xetex. We will see. While that would be good, I think it would be even better if someone maintains a separate xetex package. xetex has a much faster development process currently than texlive. True, absolutely true. The only question is who? I have not enough knowledge on xetex etc to do this. And not enough time. One idea would be to put the package as Kohda-san prepared it into svn and we try to care all together for this... Bug#384580: otrs2: [INTL:fr] French debconf templates translation
Package: otrs2 Version: N/A Severity: wishlist Tags: patch l10n Please find attached the french debconf templates update, proofread by the debian-l10n-french mailing list contributors. If you do not already use it, please remember about the podebconf-report-po utility, which helps warning translators about changes when you modify some debconf templates in your packages. See its man page for details. The usual policy when using it is sending a warning to translators when you plan to upload a version of your package with debconf templates changes (EVEN TYPO CORRECTIONS). Then leave about one week for them to update their files (several translation teams have a QA process which requires time). podebconf-report-po will take care of sending the translators the needed material as well as getting the translators adresses from the PO files. Bug#384583: lists.debian.org: Please require a Reply-To in cross-posted messages
Package: lists.debian.org Severity: wishlist It is often good to start a discussion by informing several mailing lists at once. For example, a GR proposal might be cross-posted to -vote, -project, and -devel. However, having the actual discussion be cross-posted as well rarely works well. Many people will get the messages multiple times. Others will (by mistake, if nothing else) reply only in one list, meaning that the discussion splinters into independent threads. It would therefore seem a good idea to have a ban on cross-posted messages that don't contain a Reply-To pointing at one list (at the most) on lists.debian.org. -- RFC 1437 - yet another MIME specification Microsoft ignores -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#365672: RFP: xetex - An extension of TeX with Unicode and OpenType support
On Fri, Aug 25, 2006 at 10:20 +0200, Norbert Preining wrote: On Fre, 25 Aug 2006, Frank Küster wrote: While that would be good, I think it would be even better if someone maintains a separate xetex package. xetex has a much faster development process currently than texlive. ACK True, absolutely true. The only question is who? I have not enough knowledge on xetex etc to do this. And not enough time. First of all #365672 has been changed from an RFP to an ITP some time ago. I can't remember right now who did this, though. This is one obvious candidate. The other obvious candidate would be myself. I do have the necessary knoweldge on XeTeX, fonts and stuff like that. But I am a bit short on time right now. One idea would be to put the package as Kohda-san prepared it into svn and we try to care all together for this... In that case I would definitely try to help as much as possible. One really difficult task is getting the hyphenation patterns right for cooperation with both teTeX and TeX Live. The hack I am using for my personal installation is not really good ... Besides XeTeX one also needs xdvipdfmx (also an ITP). Here the relationship with the existing dvipdfmx packages are non trivial. At least when build with upstream's Debian packaging the two packages have to conflict since they contain some identical files. Given that there recently was a case where functionality from dvipdfmx was lost in xdvipdfmx, it probably would be best to not install these files in the xdvipdfmx package but depend on dvipdfmx instead. cheerio ralf

Bug#384047: Suddenly $dbh-{AutoCommit}=0 = 'Transactions not supported by database'

This hits libdbd-mysql-perl 3.006-1, which is currently compiled against libmysqlclient15off-dev 5.0.22-x (with x depending on the architecture). Bug#384543: No mouse in GUI with Logitech receiver
On Fri, 2006-08-25 at 10:36 +0200, Attilio Fiandrotti wrote: have you tried using a separate usb mouse instead of logitech mouse to see if the problem is still reproducible? I just tried with a separate USB receiver, an older one which is only capable to serve a mouse. Nothing changes, still no mouse support. I don't have a USB-wired mouse. Some note about my configuration of input devices: A PS2 keyboard is connected but lying on top of the computer. This somehow helps the BIOS to initialise the USB stack on boot. Without it connected I am not able to type on my USB keyboard. I don't know if this is also a source of confusion, that a PS2 mouse is configured or something like that. I might be able to retrieve one later, hopefully. The shortcuts for tree expansion/collapse are + and - key, as in every GTK app. Although I am a long year Linux user I still don't know this and tried the usual left and right keys to expand (Windows does use them I think). Bug#384464: wrong compiler used
Steve Langasek wrote: Marc denies having done so. Checked the logs, Marc gave me the permission on behalv of aba permission for iee80211, ipw* uploading as additional oot-modules to unstable. Sorry for the confusion. Andi isn't around to check with, but I can't see any reason why he would have given approval to upload a new package via t-p-u either -- if anything, this should have been either a squashfs-2.6.16 uploaded via unstable, or a squashfs uploaded via testing built for 2.6.16. Nope. He did gave me explicit permission to upload them directly to 'testing' and adviced Ganneff to accept them in NEW. See the attached log (I know you understand German quite well :). Regardless, I see no reason to accept the package now given that 2.6.17 is due in testing soon. However, it's not important for us (us means, the live team) that the modules are actually in testing, t-p-u is ok too. If you remember back on -release, the question was for a *temporary* inclusion until unstable is ready. For 2.6.17, linux-modules-extra-2.6 is in place, as soon as 2.6.16 goes out of, squashfs-2.6.16 and unionfs-2.6.16 can be removed too. Re: Lars Wirzenius 2006-08-25 [EMAIL PROTECTED] It would therefore seem a good idea to have a ban on cross-posted messages that don't contain a Reply-To pointing at one list (at the most) on lists.debian.org. I'd like to second that. Even though all Debian lists end up in the same folder here, having all messages in the GR threads duplicated is annoying. Bug#384594: firefox: Firefox wastes time on downloading stuff when I do switch page direction
Package: firefox Version: 1.5.dfsg+1.5.0.6-3 Severity: normal I believe the context menu switch page direction is supposed to lay the current page out differently, and that's it. I tried switch page direction on http://vg.no, and immediately got Read flash.vg.no and a long delay as something (likely flash) was fetched from this slow site. That looks like a performance bug to me, there should be no need for fetching stuff off the net in order to lay the page out differently. Some sites are slow enough as they are. The current page is always in memory, isn't it? Not a big problem for me, as I don't usually switch page direction, but I guess this is used a lot more by people who read both english pages and pages in right-to-left languages. Bug#384593: xterm: allowWindowOps should be disabled by default
Package: xterm Version: 210-3 Severity: grave Tags: security patch Justification: user security hole Hi, There are some concerns with the window operations that XTerm emulates. CSI 21t (report window title) in particular, because since OSC 0/1/2 ST let you decide of the window title, one can decide what CSI 21t returns, which might then be read by the user's shell as a command to execute. The xterm-security attached file is an example of how this might be exploited: just cat it from any shell running in uxterm or xterm, ls gets executed. I know, people should be capable of using a pager to view log-files. But people are not necessarily aware that displaying a mere file in a terminal might have such nefarious effect. So I'm wondering whether it might be preferable to disable allowWindowOps by default (the proposed patch does this), or at least add a new resource (disabled by default) for selectively enabling CSI 21t if the user really wants it. Another possibility would be to disable \n in titles that are accepted, but that doesn't prevent other possible attacks. Note: among other x terminal emulators, I haven't found any other that implement CSI 21t, so only xterm seems to need patching. Bug#384454: ftpd: Does not handle symlink? NFS? home directory
I wrote earlier: ... the final leaf cannot be a symlink ... ... do not know what misdeeds I can do ... Too little coffee? Yes, the final leaf can be a symlink. This is exploitable when a user can control the resolution of his home directory: when he also owns the directory above (or for NFS mounts owns the machine serving it). Can access objects that were protected with permissions of directories above. Many users are in the habit of having world-accessible subdirectories and files, because their home dir has safe mode 700. I see many /root/bin directories with mode 755, protected by /root being mode 700. Much more fun if /root/bin was mode 777... Please fix. Please issue DSA. reopen 382643 reassign 382643 nvidia-graphics-modules-i386 thanks No, since the submitter is clueless [...] Thank you. The bug report was about a manually installed module, No. if some package installed it without running depmod then open a bug against it. Which is what I did, only you keep closing it :) Hmm, seems the bug has been reassigned, I must have missed the mail about that. (By Filipus Klutiero, who was trying to be helpful but is not listed as maintainer.) The bug was originally opened against nvidia-kernel-2.6.16-2-686. I'm moving it to nvidia-kernel-2.6-*'s source package, since the probem is probably shared by all its offspring. This was even discussed on debian-legal@ last month. What has debian-legal got to do with anything? C. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

You can do that by doing what was described in the first mail, by setting it suid root. It is not the program itself that limit this, but rather the kernel, so this is the way to do. Bug#365672: RFP: xetex - An extension of TeX with Unicode and OpenType support
Hi all! On Fre, 25 Aug 2006, Ralf Stubner wrote: True, absolutely true. The only question is who? I have not enough knowledge on xetex etc to do this. And not enough time. First of all #365672 has been changed from an RFP to an ITP some time ago. I can't remember right now who did this, though. This is one obvious candidate. The other obvious candidate would be myself. I do Could you contact him: Benj. Mako Hill [EMAIL PROTECTED] have the necessary knoweldge on XeTeX, fonts and stuff like that. But I am a bit short on time right now. One idea would be to put the package as Kohda-san prepared it into svn and we try to care all together for this... In that case I would definitely try to help as much as possible. Well let's ask Benjamin first, whether he has done something in this direction and whether he still wants to do the packaging. We could also give him svn access and check in the stuff into svn, so that we (all of us) can get the xetex thingy right. One really difficult task is getting the hyphenation patterns right for cooperation with both teTeX and TeX Live. The hack I am using for my personal installation is not really good ... This can be worked out. Besides XeTeX one also needs xdvipdfmx (also an ITP). Here the relationship with the existing dvipdfmx packages are non trivial. At Ok, but same approach as above, or? Unfortunately, I see no sign that anybody has looked at the Scott kernel bugzilla report above. The problem is that the person who submitted it didn't bother CC'ing the driver maintainer so nobody was aware of the bug being in bugzilla. On Fre, 25 Aug 2006, Atsuhito Kohda wrote: Only quick look, original postinst contained, among others, texlinks --silent so I guessed removing it could be wrong. Ahhh. Well I am against calling texlinks in the postinst and creating files which are *NOT* removed at remove/purge time. Yes, this should definitely not be done. So: if we provide the functionality in dh_installtex, it should create the links by itself (without texlinks) in debian/$(package)/usr/bin and should NOT put code like texlinks into the postinst script. Or better, devs create the symlinks by themselves in the rules file. What do you think, which of the two options is better? Since the symlinks and their targets can be deduced from a configuration file, namely the fmtutil.cnf snippet, I think it would be a good idea to include this in dh_installtex. However, I don't think this is particularly important; there's probably other things to do that are more pressing. The reason why I was mentioning texlinks and a DESTDIR option is that the code for parsing fmtutil.cnf, deciding about and generating symlinks already exists. And I had now a short look at the code in texlinks: I think it has already nearly everything we need. A call like texlinks --cnffile debian/40Foo.cnf debian/foo/usr/bin/ would create the symlinks, just that it checks whether the targets exist. I don't have a USB-wired mouse. i think you should try to use a ps2 or a usb cable mouse to see if it works (it should). cheers attilio -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#16827: Can this bug still be reproduced?
Hi Nathanael, So our paths cross again. ;-) And, yup, this is indeed me. Haven't used neither olvwm nor lyx for years. However, I thought what the heck and installed olvwm and lyx on sid. Result: Resizing appears to work fine with the xforms version of lyx, there are no problems with the scrollbar disappearing that I can see. Consequently, this bug can be closed now. Lots of new versions have come and gone, and perhaps it's been fixed incidentally. Please reply to bug trail. Also, Andree, I reset your submitter email address, guessing that you're the same Andree Leidenfrost who submitted the bug. Bug#343244: GTK frontend shortcuts should be documented
On Tue, Dec 13, 2005 at 11:04:06PM +0100, Attilio Fiandrotti wrote: The GTK frontend allows many keyboard shortcuts, some of the are in common with the classical NEWT frontend ENTER goes forward ESC goes back SPACE activates a button TAB navigates between items and some are new - collapses a tree + expands a tree It took me a long time to notice this. Also it's not so simple, since only + and - from the numeric block (not the ordinary keys) work. That's at least true as long as no special keyboard mapping is loaded and makes navigation in the Choose country dialog hard. But also after a proper keyboard configuration I cannot use the ordinary +/- keys with my keyboard. I'm sure there are keyboards without these keys (e.g. notebooks, even if they provide these keys via a special Fn key in NumLK mode it's hard to use). STAMP takes a screenshot That's the Print Screen key and is not always available as already discussed in this bug report. See also #384475 for a different shortcut request for this functionality.
