Bug#382956: mozilla: Shipping secure Mozilla in Etch would require unreasonable maintainance
On Tue, Aug 29, 2006 at 04:59:04AM -0400, Simon Valiquette wrote: I am using Mozilla and Netscape for ages (well, since I stopped surfing on Goopher web sites). For different reasons, I always disliked Firefox/Thunderbird and preferred a better integrated interface (memory is cheap anyway). Whatever, I have tons of archived email inside Mozilla, and you need to be sure Mozilla will migrate properly to SeaMonkey before removing Mozilla. Unless Etch get significantly delayed, I am not sure that you will have time for testing everything properly. Will the French version of SeaMonkey for PowerPC always migrate properly from Mozilla while updating from Sarge or Etch? Probably, but I am not a gambler. Just removing Mozilla from Etch without anything to migrate from is a major NO-GO for many people like me. I hope it is obvious for everyone here. I am actually running Etch, and if I just see the package disappearing, or if I have any doubt about the safety to migrate to SeaMonkey, I will prefer to move to Ubuntu or Slackintosh. Maybe I worry too much for nothing, and that Mozilla 1.8 (SeaMonkey) will allow migration without any problems, but I wanted to express my concerns about it. Also, many user will never forgive you if you just blindly remove Mozilla. Thanks for pointing out your concerns. I understand it ... and we are working on it as much as possible. I would guess that migrating to seamonkey should not cause any pain. You can of course help by testing the package as soon as it becomes available. - Alexander p.s. please take care that the bug is listed as To: or CC: when replying to this mail (e.g. /reply-all/). -- GPG messages preferred. | .''`. ** Debian GNU/Linux ** Alexander Sack| : :' : The universal [EMAIL PROTECTED] | `. `' Operating System http://www.asoftsite.org | `-http://www.debian.org/ -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#385137: %S doesnt parse to share name in log file
Package: samba Version: 3.0.22-1 Severity: important [global] log file = /var/log/samba/%S.log as described in Chapter 12 of the Using Samba guide to log for each service (share) simply creates /var/log/samba/%S.log litterally and doesnt parse it as a variable. It is also stated in Chapter 6 table 6-8 pf the Using Samba guide that the log file string Works with all variables. which is directly inconsistant with Gerald Carter's reply to the post Francis Strickland had made about this issue back in january on lists.samba.org @ http://lists.samba.org/archive/samba/2006-January/115979.html its outlined in the Using Samba document both on samba.org and in the samba-doc package in debian that this is suppose to work for creating seperate logs for each share instead of for each client machine. This should be considered a serious bug, but I have filed it as important because it doesnt affect usability for all users. However the bug makes the documentation invalid and for this reason it is every bit serious.

Bug#385143: nautilus: does not display anything in ftp:// urls if the server sends CR LF
Package: nautilus Version: 2.14.3-1 Severity: normal Hello, I have tried to use Nautilus to connect to a network printer which supports printing via several methods. Knowing that the printer will print any ps document transfered to it via ftp, I opened the ftp url of the printer, but nothing was displayed. It was supposed to display a PORT1 folder in which .ps files can be dropped. Probably the reason is the fact that the server sends CR LF instead of CR(?), since connecting with mc's ftp embedded client or trying to open the url in firefox displays the PORT1 folder, while in mc there are some weird errors which are not harmful at all. MC's Errors are: - on initial connection: «Cannot parse: -LA not found^M» - on entry in PORT1 folder: «Cannot parse: .^M» and «Cannot parse: ..^M» -- System Information: Debian Release: testing/unstable APT prefers testing APT policy: (900, 'testing'), (800, 'unstable') Architecture: i386 (i686) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/bash Kernel: Linux 2.6.16-2-686 Locale: LANG=ro_RO.UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=ro_RO.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8) Versions of packages nautilus depends on: ii desktop-file-utils 0.11-1Utilities for .desktop files ii gnome-control-center 1:2.14.2-2utilities to configure the GNOME d ii libart-2.0-2 2.3.17-1 Library of functions for 2D graphi ii libatk1.0-01.12.1-1 The ATK accessibility toolkit ii libbonobo2-0 2.14.0-1 Bonobo CORBA interfaces library ii libc6 2.3.6-15 GNU C Library: Shared libraries ii libeel2-2 2.14.3-1 Eazel Extensions Library (for GNOM ii libesd00.2.36-3 Enlightened Sound Daemon - Shared ii libexif12 0.6.13-4 library to parse EXIF files ii libgail-common 1.8.11-2 GNOME Accessibility Implementation ii libgail17 1.8.11-2 GNOME Accessibility Implementation ii libgconf2-42.14.0-4 GNOME configuration database syste ii libglade2-01:2.6.0-2 library to load .glade files at ru ii libglib2.0-0 2.10.3-3 The GLib library of C routines ii libgnome-desktop-2 2.14.3-1 Utility library for loading .deskt ii libgnome2-02.14.1-3 The GNOME 2 library - runtime file ii libgnomecanvas2-0 2.14.0-2 A powerful object-oriented display ii libgnomeui-0 2.14.1-2 The GNOME 2 libraries (User Interf ii libgnomevfs2-0 2.14.2-1 GNOME virtual file-system (runtime ii libgtk2.0-02.8.18-1 The GTK+ graphical user interface ii libnautilus-extension1 2.14.3-1 libraries for nautilus components ii liborbit2 1:2.14.0-2libraries for ORBit2 - a CORBA ORB ii libpango1.0-0 1.12.3-1+b1 Layout and rendering of internatio ii libpopt0 1.10-2lib for parsing cmdline parameters ii librsvg2-2 2.14.4-2 SAX-based renderer library for SVG ii libstartup-notification0 0.8-1 library for program launch feedbac ii libx11-6 2:1.0.0-8 X11 client-side library ii libxml22.6.26.dfsg-3 GNOME XML library ii nautilus-data 2.14.3-1 data files for nautilus ii shared-mime-info 0.17-2FreeDesktop.org shared MIME databa Versions of packages nautilus recommends: pn desktop-base none (no description available) ii eject 2.1.4-2.1 ejects CDs and operates CD-Changer pn fam none (no description available) ii libgnomevfs2-extra2.14.2-1 GNOME virtual file-system (extra m ii librsvg2-common 2.14.4-2 SAX-based renderer library for SVG ii nautilus-cd-burner2.14.3-1 CD Burning front-end for Nautilus -- no debconf information -- This message was scanned for viruses by BitDefender for Linux Mail Servers. Bug#385146: trac: trac has an inaccurate dependency and can be installed but broken.
Package: trac Version: 0.8.1-3sarge5 Severity: serious As you can see below, trac depends on subversion, but this isn't quite true. It depends on the particular version of libsvn0 that stable subversion comes with. If you install a backport subversion, libsvn_swig_py is no longer included in libsvn0, which causes trac to fail. So the reason I'm raising a bug against trac for this, as well mentioning this to backports, is dpkg didn't spot the problem because trac's dependencies aren't strict enough - it doesn't just depend on subversion (= 1.0.1), it depends explicitly on libsvn0 certainly less than 1.3.2, and probably much less than that. To reproduce this problem, simply install a backport subversion on a stable system and then try to use trac-admin. I hope that all made sense. I see no benefit to users in making such Debian-specific changes. See end of email. [...] I'm happy to be convinced otherwise about (not) converting the package to multiple binaries. However, I don't see any significant benefit at this time. If I understand your proposal correctly, you want to provide the .gpr file and the source and .ali files in their proper places, but you would still provide the object files in /usr/lib/ada/adalib/adacgi/*.o, right? The pro of this proposal is reduced complexity, both for you and for users (one package instead of two). The con is a lack of consistency with other library packages; both in the naming scheme for packages, and in that it would be impossible for users to pass -ladacgi to the linker. Maybe you could mitigate that with linker options in the project file. Also the lack of a shared library means users have no option but to link statically. I think that it would still be a good idea to at least compile adacgi with -g, per general Debian policy. I don't feel very strongly one way or another, because the small size of adacgi excuses it for not being a honest-to-God shared library :) Do any other distributions do this to adacgi? No, but then again, AFAIK no other distribution carries adacgi; not even Gentoo and not even FreeBSD :) so, Debian leads the way once again :) -- Ludovic Brenta. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Package: reiserfsprogs Version: 3.6.19-3 fsck.reiserfs built for Debian does not presume the -q option. Bug#385089: network-manager-kde: fails to use kwallet after boot
Am Dienstag 29 August 2006 12:40 schrieb Michael Biebl: I can not reproduce this bug here. It works as expected, meaning that after starting knetwormanager, it tries to open the wallet, kwallet prompts me for the password, and after that k-n-m is able to retrieve the key. I just a uploaded a new revision [1] which fixes some kwallet related issues, e.g. it only access kwallet on demand and not directly on startup. Let me know if this revision also fixes your problem. If not, please create a new test account, so that you don't have any possible side effect and try again. I installed the new version and strange things happened: * On the first tries, it could not find the PSK at all. Then I created a testuser and added that user to groups plugdev and netdev. However, that was not enough. I also had to add the user to group dialout or a DBUS error appeared (startup from console) and no network devices were visible. Most strange is that removing that user from group dialout did not make that error reappear. After that, it kind of worked except that it didn't use the kwallet at all. At least that what it looks like because connecting to the network did not succeed at all (wpa_cli showed some PSK errors). I added the testuser to all other groups that my normal user has and suddenly, it worked and the PSK was stored in the wallet. Somewhat strange behaviour because again, removing all those previously added groups (except plugdev and netdev) did not have any effect anymore. Back to my own user, it still had the same problem. I probably got the clue, then, to note that I have _two_ wallets: my standard one for this system and a manually added old one from my old system. Knetworkmanager could not handle that, probably, because removing the old, second one (that was alphabetically before the standard one) solved the problem. After that, adding the old one again did not confuse knetworkmanager anymore, maybe the standard one was not first in list but now is. Conclusion: The wallet code in knetworkmanager needs to be more robust, it fails in quite some situations. Also, failure to connect to the DBUS is only visible in the konsole, no error message pops up! If wpasupplicant fails to use the PSK, network-manager tries on forever with absolutely no status report that something failed :-( And I leave out the errors that two running network-manager clients caused. After all, it's beta level software. HS -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I don't remember putting it by hand on the .reportbugrc, that's for sure. Therefore, I believe maybe it was inserted by reportbug itself the first time it was run (some releases ago)? Maybe locale existed as a work-around before? Package: util-vserver Version: 0.30.210-10 Severity: normal Hi *! It seems that /usr/sbin/vlimit dies when the path to the config directory contains a symlink: tom:/etc/vservers# ls -lad apt-cacher lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 44 Aug 29 13:48 apt-cacher - /var/lib/vservers/_infra/_config/apt-cacher/ tom:/etc/vservers# vserver apt-cacher start vlimit: fstat(/etc/vservers/apt-cacher/rlimits): Permission denied [...] The same config works, when bind-mounting the config into place. /var/lib/vservers/_infra is on external storage which can be accessed by a standby server in case of a failure, therefore I also need the config on this volume. Bug#385168: /etc/skel/.bashrc - lesspipe
Package: bash Version: 3.1-5 Hi, there's a bug in /etc/skel/.bashrc: It calls the program lesspipe and evals it's output. But the syntax of the environment commands that lesspipe spits out depends on the SHELL environment variable. Thus, if a user has a SHELL variable other than any sh dialect, (e.g. tcsh), and runs bash, lesspipe issues csh-compatible commands which are incompatible to sh. It fails to work and issues annoying error messages. replace eval $(lesspipe) with eval $(env SHELL=/bin/sh lesspipe) regards Hadmut -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#385012: init-script does not work if /usr is on a different filesystem
tag 385012 + moreinfo tag 385012 + unreproducible thanks Hi Sven! You wrote: /etc/init.d/procps is using which (located at /usr/bin/which) at a time where /usr is not mounted. That's not correct. Although /usr/bin/which exists, it's a symlink to /bin/which, which _is_ available when /etc/init.d/procps is run This causes the init-script to fail and leaves /etc/sysctl.conf unprocessed. Also, I can't reproduce this here. I have /usr on a seperate filesystem on all my machines, and procps runs fine on all of them. Bug#385068: add some pam features

There might be security issues in using a fake TTY: that's a relative path, and so a cups TTY could be created in the CWD and potentially abused (for example, a hard or soft link to a real TTY). If there isn't a TTY, PAM_TTY should probably be left unset. Yes, I was self confused about the function of these variable, but the pam-modules (look at the sources) want be check if it was a TTY device or not. The SSH server set the PAM_TTY variable to ssh and xdm set the variable to :0 or :1, etc. The pam_access module themself support these fake variables (see libpam-doc). So I think there shouldn't be a problem if cupsd set the variable to cups or cupsys or whatever. - - Markus Nass - -- Key fingerprint = DC3C 257C 2B71 8FA4 F609 F7F7 7C14 F806 5665 77FD ~~ Was nicht fliegen kann, kann auch nicht abstürzen. ~~ -BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE- Version: GnuPG v1.4.5 (GNU/Linux) Comment: Using GnuPG with Mozilla - http://enigmail.mozdev.org iD8DBQFE9ExBfBT4BlZld/0RA/CoAJ9PG4F2d6om8NXtvMiVvHZnkLTwRwCdFiv0 YM8pBhiK1u5af1rwrLtfjE0= =GHGE -END PGP SIGNATURE- -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#385115: chromium-data: Unclear license for some files
severity 385115 grave thanks I'm sorry, but AFAIK, distributing illegal data should be release critical. We are not talking about non-free data, we are talking about ripped (or pirated, if you prefer), undistributable data, which is much worse. Please read below. On 8/29/06, Steve Langasek [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: The copyright file claims that these files come from http://www.reptilelabour.com/software/chromium/ and are available under the OK, my English is very bad, but I am under the impression that you haven't read my message nor made any attempt to understand it. Yes, I know the copyright file claims that files came from http://www.reptilelabour.com/software/chromium/, but my point is that the same page you cited claims that some files come from the urls that I've mentioned on my email. This is a quotation taken from about page: Music Loops and raw Sound Effects from: Partners in Rhyme FindSounds.com terms of the Artistic License. If you determine that *specific* files are covered by a different copyright than the one claimed in debian/copyright, The copyright does not belong to the author of the program. He can't publish them under the artistic license. Look at the strings of some files: strings /usr/share/games/chromium/wav/power.wav | grep Copyright Copyright (C) 1995 Corel Corporation Limited. All Rights Reserved And this is a quote from one on the pages the files were downloaded (findsounds.com): When you perform a search using FindSounds.com or the WebPalette feature of FindSounds Palette, you obtain links to audio files hosted by Web sites throughout the world. The sounds in these audio files may be copyrighted and their use governed by national and international copyright laws. We do not offer advice on the fair use of these files. So they are downloaded from unkown places. or under a license other than the Artistic License, please re-raise the severity. Otherwise, simple second-guessing of the statements in the copyright file doesn't seem to be a reason for a release-critical bug. I don't need to prove anything. It is only your assumption that the files are under the artistic license, because this is not what the author of the program claims. Under this conditions you should verify that they are under the Artistic license, instead of me that they are not. Saying that the files are free because they are downloaded from the same page as the program is not enough, because upstream recognizes that he has not made some of them. It should be clarified by upstream files made by him and files that are not. I also want etch to be released in time, but allowing this is unacceptable to me. Bug#377915: Can't change sample rate
I reported this to the ALSA team - Takashi Iwai suggested: Check your /proc/asound/card0/codec97#0/ac97#0-0 file, whether it contains VRA in Extended ID section. If not, it's 48k-only codec. This is the case with both the test systems showing the problem here, which both have AC97 on-board sound cards. If extra sound interfaces are plugged in (PCI card, USB interface) then these don't have the problem. So this behaviour is not a bug in Debian, it is a limitation of certain sound hardware that can only do 48kHz sampling. There may be a work-around using ALSA's plug layer for software resampling, but this is unlikely to give good JACK performance. Cheers! So it seems only this patch to the Makefile is necessary, do you agree? Hi back, here is how I checked: - fetched the 1.4.2 tarball - copied the debian/ directory from the 1.4.1 deb-source - dch'd... - deleted the patches no longer needed (included upstream) - added the patch you mentioned - built The build ran OK, including the testsuite, so I guess I can confirm that this patch is alright, thanks. Bug#384650: nautilus: should refresh removable media label after a burn op
tag 384650 + upstream wontfix thanks Le vendredi 25 août 2006 à 18:49 +0100, Jon Dowland a écrit : Package: nautilus Version: 2.14.3-1 Severity: normal When I insert a blank DVD in my DVD writer, I get an icon on my Nautilus desktop entitled Blank DVD Disc (or similar). Activating this icon spawns nautilus-cd-burner. If I burn a disc, but do not eject the disc from the drive on completion, the disc on the desktop remains as Blank DVD Disc. Ideally, the newly burned disc would be remounted such that activating it's icon does not spawn n-c-b but opens up it's contents. For now, ejecting ensures that the icon refreshes and the volume is mounted. I've discussed with upstream, and found this is purely intentional, because of some buggy hardware. Bug#385144: [Pkg-zope-developers] Bug#385144: zope-zms: New upstream version available for some time

Would be great if you could create a new package for zope3. zope3 is a complete re-write of Zope 2 with totally different architecture and concepts. So, right now, it is almost impossible to write a non-trivial extension that works on both. -- Brian Sutherland Metropolis - it's the first movie with a robot. And she's a woman. Bug#385175: debian-installer: [powerpc] let's move powerpc d-i into the initramfs era ...
Package: debian-installer Severity: normal Tags: patch d-i Well, i believe there is no reason for any of the 2.6 arches to still use cramfs, not sure though. In any case, powerpc can handle initramfs just fine (and indeed, it is used by initramfs-tools for the real ramdisk), and i believe ubuntu also produces initramfs for their installer incarnation on powerpc. So, the attached patch uses an initramfs for all powerpc subarches.
