Bug#415894: mediawiki1.7: Sensless debconf note
Quoting Romain Beauxis ([EMAIL PROTECTED]): At first glance, I see this one as a case for debconf abuse. Bug#415746: Suggestion for Gobby
On Wed, Mar 21, 2007 at 11:13:03AM -0600, Parmeisan wrote: 3. Now this is very minor, but we've discovered that Alt-# will switch to a window, which is good (though not easy to know) but with more than 10 windows open, we lose the ability to switch to them with the keyboard, and switching around with the mouse can get really annoying with that many documents open. So if, for example, holding down Alt and then pressing 1 and 2 really quickly would go to document 12, that would be really sweet. What about switching documents with Ctrl-Alt-Pg(Up|Down)? Bug#415985: aspell-de: Skips non German
severity 415985 wishlist thanks Re: Helge Kreutzmann 2007-03-23 [EMAIL PROTECTED] Now I was asked to try out aspell and find that it seems to accept non-German words as well. In ispell there was a word list containing technical terms which I went through with the maintainer. Is there something similar for aspell? Unfortunately, the aspell-de source is mostly opaque. We were thinking about building aspell-de from the igerman98 source, but so far no one got around to as the Makefiles there are somewhat complex (or rather contain apell rules which were not really up to date last time I checked). You could also copy the URL to the stream itself and dump it with MPlayer for example. Anyway, like you said, I guess it's not relevant anymore. i am now able to playback video on innertube with totem-mozilla. i'm not sure why though. the thing was that i had it working a while back (didn't know why or how it seemed to just randomly start working), then i decided to reinstall debian on this system and it wasn't working for a while, but now finally it is working again. this is good but very strange, i'm not sure if i installed an extra package that made it happen or if maybe there was an update to libxine or something or what. it could have even been something on their end, but i think that is unlikely. i would say leave this bug open till i can figure out how to reliably get this working. Bug#411042: samba -dosen't connect to OpenLDAP
I'm getting similar issues with regards to smbd dieing and a broken connection to slapd though I'm not using TLS; same release 3.0.24-2. I have configured the samba on this box as a PDC. I did a test setup of samba as a PDC about a year ago and was able to get it working okay, ver. around 3.0.20. It basically shows up when I try to do a net command that happens to require a password, e.g. net ads user. I get a ads_connect: Connection refused. In the log.smbd, I get things like: [2007/03/24 07:31:49, 1] lib/smbldap.c:another_ldap_try(1150) Connection to LDAP server failed for the 14 try! [2007/03/24 07:31:50, 0] lib/smbldap.c:smb_ldap_setup_conn(638) ldap_initialize: Time limit exceeded [2007/03/24 07:31:50, 1] lib/smbldap.c:another_ldap_try(1150) Connection to LDAP server failed for the 15 try! Samba sets up okay during the run of smbldap-populate which seems to have a bunch of interaction between samba and slapd, and the smbldap-cmds seem to work okay. log.nmbd doesn't seem to indicate anything relating to why smbd dies. Also, I haven't determined exactly the pattern for smbd dieing other than it has died frequently when I am doing a restart during this testing period. Various debug levels to get samba (or slapd) to provide me with the key clue hasn't done the trick so far. -jeff -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Subliminal message to the new maintainer: swiching to patch managment in debian/patches would help a lot. I can try to do this if you are interested. From what I see in git://git.debian.org/git/pkg-xorg/data/xkb-data.git, it is already using quilt since july 2006. So definitely, the keyboard will be missing in Etch. However, I am quite confident that jp106 is quite a good aproximation if you do not use the eisu and kana keys. The support for these keys has been added in upstream's sources, as documented in https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=8503. Unfortunately I do not have access to an ia64 machine. Can you please verify this bug still exists with the latest sources from svn? Bug#416001: gcj-4.1 FTBFS
The problem seems to be that the package expects to be built using fastjar (and build-depends appropriately), but the calls in the build process are just to `jar'. On my system (and presumably also the submitter's) this doesn't point to fastjar because several packages use the alternatives mechanism to provide a jar program. fastjar supports the `@' argument, whereas the others do not. The Debian Java policy says that the build system should explicitly use a specific build environment and not rely on the alternatives mechanism. The fix is therefore to call make with JAR=fastjar. This package has a very convoluted build system, however, so I'm not going to try and produce a patch HTH, Matt -- Matthew Johnson signature.asc Description: Digital signature

Bug#415602: jd: please display a warning message if setlocale() fails
On March 24, 2007 at 7:26AM +0900, tats (at vega.ocn.ne.jp) wrote: BTW, the upstream new version jd-1.8.8~beta070317 checks that if the value of environment variables LC_ALL, LC_CTYPE or LANG is not ja_JP.UTF-8, a warning message is displayed, but this is not a correct judgment. jd works under ja_JP.eucJP or so if the locale data of ja_JP.UTF-8 is available. I recommend that displaying a warning message if the return value of setlocale() is NULL. Hmm, the new upstream version 1.8.8-beta070324 goes from bad to worse, which displays a warning message when LANG=ja_JP.eucJP but LC_ALL=ja_JP.UTF-8... BTW, does jd really require ja_JP.UTF-8? I guess jd also works with other UTF-8 locales such as en_US.UTF-8. If so, I recommend: * Check a value of LC_ALL, LC_CTYPE, or LANG. * If the value is not UTF-8 locale, do setlocale(LC_ALL, ja_JP.UTF-8). * if the return value of setlocale() is NULL, display a warning message. AFAICS, with LANG=ja_JP.eucJP LC_ALL=ja_JP.eucJP, if setlocale(LC_ALL, ja_JP.UTF-8) fails, ファイル-板一覧最読込 displays a bord list incompletely. If setlocale(LC_ALL, ja_JP.UTF-8) succeeds, it works correctly. With LANG=en_US.UTF-8 LC_ALL=en_US.UTF-8 without setlocale(), jd seems to work. Also, for political reasons, although it's accepted that Londonderry is the official name for another city in Northern Ireland, it's generally written as Londonderry/Derry or (London)Derry -- as I understand it, some people take offense at the idea that the town was renamed by the Queen to include the word London. Bug#398759: libapache2-mod-fcgid: ProcessLifeTime and IdleTimeout don't work
Perhaps related to this bug, I have noticed that touching an fcgid-script-handler file does not cause mod_fcgid to kill and respawn the server process, as mod_fastcgi does. Perhaps I'm just doing this the wrong way, but the docs are sparse and so I thought I would ask you if you knew if there was a 'proper' way to make mod_fcgid restart its child processes. -- Sam Morris http://robots.org.uk/ PGP key id 1024D/5EA01078 3412 EA18 1277 354B 991B C869 B219 7FDB 5EA0 1078 signature.asc Description: This is a digitally signed message part

Package: kvpnc Version: 0.8.6.1-1 Severity: normal Tags: security --- Please enter the report below this line. --- When using kvpnc with pptp you have the option *not* to store the password and username. But even when you chose this option, kvpnc stores the username in /etc/ppp/peers/kvpnc.foo and the password in /etc/ppp/chap-secrets Although the chap-secrets is just readable by root/root, the passwords are stored in cleartext in this file so pretending to not storing the passwords but storing them behind the back of the user is a security concern. If you want to reporduce this bug, please keep in mind that the passwords are stored in chap-secrets after you tried to connect. So you must connect before the passwords are stored. I guess ext3 has some optimisations and then reorder the entries. With the simple test program bellow: #include stdio.h #include sys/types.h #include dirent.h int main(int argc, char *argv[]) { DIR *d; struct dirent *s; d = opendir(argv[1]); if (NULL == d) return 0; while ((s = readdir(d)) != NULL) printf(%s\n, s-d_name); closedir(d); } I have: ccidusbout7.hex usbsnoop.log ccidusbout-20070313.hex ccidusblnux-20070307.hex ccidusbout4.hex ccidusbout5.hex USBDrivers.zip . Bug#375077: closed by Stephen Frost [EMAIL PROTECTED] (Bug#375077: fixed in libnss-ldap 251-4)
Steve Langasek wrote: On Fri, Mar 23, 2007 at 02:42:15AM +0100, Michael Biebl wrote: Well, sorry, but I don't see how any other fix is possible for libnss-ldap. It's a fact that udev does lookups for users/groups that are not guaranteed to exist on the local system, and I don't think libnss-ldap should be responsible for trying to munge the user's /etc/nsswitch.conf on boot to avoid all LDAP lookups. Imo there is a solution: The problem is, that libnss-ldap retries several times before it gives up (because there is no network connection yet). While this makes sense during normal operation, it doesn't make sense during bootup. So my suggestion would be: The first time, libnss-ldap can successfully query the (remote) ldap server, it creates a file, lets call it /var/run/nss-ldap-connected. Only if this file exists, libnss-ldap retries multiple times on network outages. This file is deleted on shutdown. On startup, if the file does not exist yet, nss-ldap does not retry to connect several times but immediately returns nothing if it cant connect to the server. Does that sound reasonable? It sounds like a kludge to me, but I'm not the package maintainer so it's not really my decision. Anyway, I don't think nss-ldap has to retry anything to cause udev error messages, just a single lookup seems to be enough. For the time being, I created two nsswitch.conf files (one with ldap support, the other without). The main network interface now contains an up and down rule which copies the correct nsswitch.conf file to /etc/, depending on the network state. Maybe this workaround could be documented in README.Debian. So, I dug a bit into this issue and found out the problem seems to be on epiphany's end. I'll however put a conflict in next xulrunner upload, which was already planned, that will avoid an upload of epiphany to add this conflict for etch. I'll leave the conflict until the clone bug is fixed in ephy. Now, as for my investigations: The backtrace appears as follows: #0 0xb719e42a in PySys_GetObject (name=0xb71cf0ca path) at ../Python/sysmodule.c:52 #1 0xb719fd5e in PySys_SetArgv (argc=1, argv=0xbfe4b09c) at ../Python/sysmodule.c:1182 #2 0x0811cf5e in ephy_python_init () ../Python/sysmodule.c:52 is: PyObject *sd = tstate-interp-sysdict for which it appears that tstate, set on ../Python/sysmodule.c:51, is NULL. ../Python/sysmodule.c:51 is: PyThreadState *tstate = PyThreadState_GET(); where PyThreadState_GET is a macro for _PyThreadState_Current. Now, looking into what python xpcom does, it appears it releases the python thread state when it is done with python work, in which case _PyThreadState_Current is set to NULL. And it makes sure the python thread state is correcly set when it needs to use python. These are done with PyGILState_Ensure and PyGILState_Release functions. This means that by the time epiphany gets into python initialization, _PyThreadState_Current is NULL... It seems like the Ensure/Release cycles are necessary in cases like this one, where the python interpreter is used in several places in the same address space. Adding PyGILState_STATE state; state = PyGILState_Ensure(); PyGILState_Release(state); into the correct places in ephy_python_init() did indeed make the crash disappear from ephy_python_init(), and happen later. But I actually wonder if it should not be necessary to create a new thread state. In which case, it should be necessary to do the same in pyxpcom, because it doesn't create its own thread state. But maybe I'm just saying crap, I don't know much about the python API... Mike -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Bug#416067: Evolution's time zone files aren't updated for recent DST changes
Package: evolution-data-server-common Version: 1.6.3-4 I noticed last night that an alert I have set to go off at 10PM went of at 11PM instead. I looked at my calendar in Evolution and saw that the red line indicating the current time was an hour earlier than the time everywhere else on my system. I live in the U.S. central time zone, which is represented as US/Central, America/Chicago (among others), and CST6CDT in regular zoneinfo file distributions. The rules for which day each year daylight saving time is activated were changed about a year ago for my region, and the changes became effective this month. I shortly tracked down my problem to be an outdated vCalendar file: /usr/share/evolution-data-server-1.6/zoneinfo/America/Chicago.ics BEGIN:VCALENDAR PRODID:-//Ximian//NONSGML Evolution Olson-VTIMEZONE Converter//EN VERSION:2.0 BEGIN:VTIMEZONE TZID:/softwarestudio.org/Olson_20011030_5/America/Chicago X-LIC-LOCATION:America/Chicago BEGIN:STANDARD TZOFFSETFROM:-0500 TZOFFSETTO:-0600 TZNAME:CST DTSTART:19701025T02 RRULE:FREQ=YEARLY;BYMONTH=10;BYDAY=-1SU END:STANDARD BEGIN:DAYLIGHT TZOFFSETFROM:-0600 TZOFFSETTO:-0500 TZNAME:CDT DTSTART:19700405T02 RRULE:FREQ=YEARLY;BYMONTH=4;BYDAY=1SU END:DAYLIGHT END:VTIMEZONE END:VCALENDAR As a quick fix, I modified the RRULE lines so they read, respectively: RRULE:FREQ=YEARLY;BYMONTH=11;BYDAY=1SU and RRULE:FREQ=YEARLY;BYMONTH=3;BYDAY=2SU Of course, this could screw up looking back in time to previous years, though I'm not sure how critical that is for the Evolution calendar. If vCalendar files can represent the history of time zone changes as well as regular zoneinfo files can, I'd like to see historical info in there too. That'd help with future changes too, so then a file containing info on when the future change takes effect could be distributed almost as soon as the law gets passed. Of course, I'd *really* prefer if the calendar just used the system's time zone settings, or at least had a way to use the existing system zoneinfo files as templates to recreate the vCalendar time zone files used by Evolution whenever it's necessary. I consider 80MB to be a lot, especially for someone on dial-up or DSL. -- System Information: Debian Release: 4.0 APT prefers testing APT policy: (500, 'testing') Architecture: i386 (i686) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/bash Kernel: Linux 2.6.18-4-686 Locale: LANG=en_US.UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=en_US.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8) Versions of packages galeon depends on: ii galeon-common 2.0.2-4 GNOME web browser for advanced use ii libart-2.0-2 2.3.17-1 Library of functions for 2D graphi ii libatk1.0-01.12.4-2 The ATK accessibility toolkit ii libbonobo2-0 2.14.0-3 Bonobo CORBA interfaces library ii libbonoboui2-0 2.14.0-5 The Bonobo UI library ii libc6 2.3.6.ds1-13 GNU C Library: Shared libraries ii libcairo2 1.2.4-4 The Cairo 2D vector graphics libra ii libfontconfig1 2.4.2-1.2 generic font configuration library ii libgconf2-42.16.1-1 GNOME configuration database syste ii libglade2-01:2.6.0-4 library to load .glade files at ru ii libglib2.0-0 2.12.4-2 The GLib library of C routines ii libgnome-desktop-2 2.14.3-2 Utility library for loading .deskt ii libgnome-keyring0 0.6.0-3 GNOME keyring services library ii libgnome2-02.16.0-2 The GNOME 2 library - runtime file ii libgnomecanvas2-0 2.14.0-2 A powerful object-oriented display ii libgnomeui-0 2.14.1-2 The GNOME 2 libraries (User Interf ii libgnomevfs2-0 1:2.14.2-7GNOME virtual file-system (runtime ii libgtk2.0-02.8.20-7 The GTK+ graphical user interface ii libice61:1.0.1-2 X11 Inter-Client Exchange library ii libmozjs0d 1.8.0.9-1 The Mozilla SpiderMonkey JavaScrip ii libnspr4-0d1.8.0.9-1 NetScape Portable Runtime Library ii liborbit2 1:2.14.3-0.1 libraries for ORBit2 - a CORBA ORB ii libpango1.0-0 1.14.8-5 Layout and rendering of internatio ii libpopt0 1.10-3lib for parsing cmdline parameters ii libsm6 1:1.0.1-3 X11 Session Management library ii libstartup-notification0 0.8-2 library for program launch feedbac ii libx11-6 2:1.0.3-6 X11 client-side library ii libxcursor11.1.7-4 X cursor management library ii libxext6 1:1.0.1-2 X11 miscellaneous extension librar ii libxfixes3 1:4.0.1-5 X11 miscellaneous 'fixes' extensio ii libxi6 1:1.0.1-4 X11 Input extension library ii libxinerama1 1:1.0.1-4.1 X11 Xinerama extension library ii libxml22.6.27.dfsg-1 GNOME XML library ii libxrandr2 2:1.1.0.2-5 X11 RandR extension library ii libxrender11:0.9.1-3 X Rendering Extension client libra ii libxul0d 1.8.0.9-1 Gecko engine library ii procps 1:3.2.7-3 /proc file system utilities Versions of packages galeon recommends: ii gnome-control-center 1:2.14.2-7 utilities to configure the GNOME d ii gnome-icon-theme 2.14.2-2 GNOME Desktop icon theme ii iso-codes 1.0a-1 ISO language, territory, currency ii scrollkeeper 0.3.14-13 A free electronic cataloging syste ii yelp 2.14.3-2 Help browser for GNOME 2 -- no debconf information -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#209008: debian-policy: [PROPOSAL] common interface for parallel building in DEB_BUILD_OPTIONS
Guillem Jover [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: Personally I'd favour DEB_BUILD_OPTIONS_PARALLEL. Ack. Automated guesses are always a possible source for problems, and in this special case, the human behind the build process should know best which number of parallel processes is useful [1] Marc Footnotes: [1] The classic problematic case would be a CPU showing two cores due to HT and only little RAM, where two parallel g++ runs could easily trash the machine, while almost all other builds would show almost no improvement. -- Fachbegriffe der Informatik - Einfach erklärt 171: PMPO Leistungsabgabe bei spontaner Verbrennung (Arndt Spelten) pgpmQw6DMtWnt.pgp Description: PGP signature

Bug#415558: lintian: too pedantic about /usr/lib vs. /usr/share (image-file-in-usr-lib)
Colin Watson [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: Don't get me wrong: I'm not saying that we should fail to fix bugs just because it's too much effort. Nor am I saying that the effort expended so far on moving files to /usr/share is wasted; hierarchies such as /usr/share/doc, /usr/share/fonts, and /usr/share/man are a very substantial win on heterogeneous shared systems. However, I do think that we're rapidly approaching diminishing returns on this. When the lintian warning is for a single image file in /usr/lib that requires fiddly build system changes to move (or fragile hacks in debian/ that would be liable to break on each new upstream version), I question whether this is a sensible use of developer time, and I question whether it really buys anything for administrators of heterogeneous systems. I think that Debian's commitment to policies, even if it is hard work to adhere to them, is one of the few things that Debian still has as an advantage over other distributions. I don't see why we should stop to nag maintainers to work on these issues. Anyway, as Russ said, this is not an issue that should be decided without having a discussion somewhere else, but I have to admit that I'm against such a change.
