Ok, I have no idea why that combo box is empty. It isn't on my machine.

I've built a 32-bit package on my machine. Would you please try it out to
see if you get that problem with that binary as well?

Bug#431148: vim-scripts: Has an old version of supertab.vim which is not registered in vim-addons

2007-06-30 Thread Kari Oikarinen
Package: vim-scripts
Version: 7.1.2
Severity: normal

vim-scripts has SuperTab.vim, but it is an old version from a maintainer
that has [abandoned it][1]. The script has a new maintainer and it's
nowadays Vim script [#1643][2].

The former should have been a wishlist bug, but supertab is also not in
/usr/share/vim/registry/vim-scripts.yaml which to me seems to be a bug.

I think the reason is line 393 in /usr/sbin/update-exim4.conf:

But it looks right, I forgot that gnutls-serv implements an echo

I am afraid that I do not know what is going on here, and that locally

does not grok them. I cannot afford doing this.

Tagging the bug accordingly.

Thanks for the patch.

As this seems to change the public API of the library I want to get an
opinion about it from upstream.

One of the issue is that tools like sbuild and pbuilder which want to
take advantage of the Build-Depends-Indep split needs to know whether
dpkg-buildpackage will call debian/rules build or build-arch. So if you
go that route, the exact criterium used by dpkg-buildpackage need to be
 published as an interface.

I think that is just wrong. sbuild should not need to know anything
about dpkg-buildpackage's internals and there is no need for change
here. The currently used and proven interface is:

1. install Build-Depends for running dpkg-buildpackage -B

2. install Build-Depends *and* Build-Indep-Indep for running
dpkg-buildpackage differently (e.g without any modifier or with -b)

I hope you agree with the current license of this document and agree
to put your text under the same one :-) If there is no objection, I
 will apply this soonish.

Since my contribution is derived from the current version of the _New
Maintainers' Guide_, which is GPLed, my contribution must be GPLed as
well, if distributed (and it has been just distributed to the BTS!).

To be more precise, the current version of the Guide is released under
the terms of the GNU GPL v2 or later, hence a derivative work can be
distributed under the terms:
 * of the GNU GPL v2 only
 * of the GNU GPL v2 or v3
 * of the GNU GPL v2 or later
 * of the GNU GPL v3 only
 * of the GNU GPL v3 or later

I personally *dislike* the GNU GPL v3, hence I would choose to license
my contribution under the terms of the GNU GPL v2 only.
But, on the other hand, my contribution is really small: I don't even
know if it is creative enough to qualify for copyright protection. As a
consequence, I don't think it makes much sense to insist that the
license of the Guide is changed from GPL v2 or later to GPL v2 only,
just for this small contribution.

In conclusion, to the extent that my contribution is actually
copyrighted, I hereby release it under the same terms of
version 1.2.11 of the _New Maintainers' Guide_, that is to say, under
the terms of the GNU General Public License as published by the Free
Software Foundation; either version 2 of the License, or any later
version.
But I hope you will *not* switch to GPL v3 or later, and stick to GPL
v2 or later instead.

I hope that this clarifies.

+ file. Packages should not refer to GPL and LGPL symlinks in
+ that directory since different, incompatible versions of these
+ licenses have been published by the Free Software Foundation,
+ hence using the symlinks could lead to ambiguity.

I disagree with this. It should be ok to point to the latest version
of the GPL if the program says Version X or later. Many programs
do that, and we should not need to change them.

But do we really want to license everything which is GPL version 2 or
later under the GPL version 3?

And how do we discriminate between GPL version 2 or later and GPL
version 3 or later?

Bug#431109: [PROPOSAL] Disambiguate of Section 12.5, Deprecate GPL/LGPL symlinks

We would not be necessarily relicensing to GPL version 3.

The paragraph On Debian systems the GPL is in /usr/share/common-licenses
is mainly for informational purposes. The license for the package
would still be the one in the source code, and it would be as well
the one in the copyright file.

In other words, I think it would be ok if our copyright files were worded
like this:

This program is free software. It is under GPL version 2 or later. On Debian
systems, the latest GPL version is in /usr/share/common-licenses/GPL.

Bug#431130: exim4-config: update-exim4.conf greps in .dpkg-old files

 Feature. See #431019.

Thanks, and sorry for not spotting the other bug report (I only
checked bugs against exim4-config).

After reading your answer to Michal I see your point; and I can
understand that you are not keen on adding complex checks but maybe
it might help to avoid some confusion if you changed the error
message by adding or by some old .dpkg-old files or similar.

Feel free to close/merge/downgrade-to-wishlist this bug.

Bug#333251: darcs doesn't like pasted text

2007-06-30 Thread Tommy Pettersson
I think this bug is fixed in darcs 1.0.9. The failing
hSetBuffering operation is now ignored, so the bug doesn't
happen anymore, and allowing hSetBuffering to fail doesn't
seem to have any ill effects. It has been tested for a long time
in the unstable branch of darcs.

Ok, new proposed patch, incorporating these fixes.

* H. S. Teoh [EMAIL PROTECTED] [070630 06:45]:
Also, I might add, this only happens with Opera window titles. I tried
to set my rxvt title to a string containing the reg; character, but it
displayed correctly. I'm not sure if this could be a bug in Opera (maybe
it's not encoding the window title properly---I'm not sure how to check
since ratpoison crashes outright trying to display it). But in any case,
 ratpoison shouldn't crash.

Could you send me the output of xprop on that window when it displays
that character? That would make it easier to try to reproduce it.

Especially as ratpoison is not doing much with the content, it might
also be a problem within xlibs. Could you mail me the versions
of ratpoison and its dependencies?
(For example the output of dpkg -s ratpoison libx11-6 libxext6 | grep Version)

Bug#423006: Bugs merged

2007-06-30 Thread Guido Trotter

Hi!

I've reassigned the bug we had against xen to initramfs-tools, as it is, as
reported, the same bug, and being a bug with the image generation we can't do
anything on our side about it.

Also I re-raised the severity to critical because, as stated by the severity
description, this bug makes unrelated software on the system (or the whole
system) break. Namely it breaks xen, or whole systems with xen installed.

Feel free to lower its severity if you think this is inappropriate, but please
provide a reason, so I can know why I am mistaken! :)

Thanks!!

Guido

Bug#423289: Seconding the idea of removing hsffig.

2007-06-30 Thread Charles Plessy
Dear developpers,

hsffig contain a binary program which has the same name as one from one
of my packages (#427441). Since the maintainer never answered to my multiple
emails about this problem, I think that he is definitely not interested
in keeping hsffig in Debian. I therefore second the idea of removing it.

Have a nice day,

(probably a better way is to add hunspell.hxx to the list of
 system headers wrapped in config/system_wrappers).
But then the real fun comes with the final link of firefox-bin
which also fails with undefined references to hidden functions.

A fix for the first issue is in current svn. I have a solution for the
second but am awaiting for feedback from upstream on the correctness of
the fix.

Bug#430933: collectd_4.0.3-1(hppa/experimental): FTBFS: tries to mix -fPIC and non -fPIC

Policy 10.2 requires static libraries not to be built with -fPIC. This does
not seem to work on 64bit archs though (is hppa a 64bit architecture)? This
problem has already been reported (see #358637).

I'm not quite sure yet if that's a general problem on non 32bit architectures.
In that case the policy should be changed in this respect. I need to do
 further investigations before.

To temporarily work around this issue, I will disable the plugins causing that
kind of problems on hppa (as I'm already doing on other 64bit architectures).

You can build static libraries without -fPIC just fine, you just can link
it together with another object that is compiled with -fPIC. The correct
solution for this is to have a version of the static library compiled with
-fPIC in addition to the one compiled without. We had this in the past for e.g.
xlibs,
don't know what a current example would be.

i386 doesn't seem to care about the PIC/non-PIC thing, I'm not
toolchain expert enough to tell why. hppa on the other hand is very
picky about it (it is a 32bit architecture, BTW, at least in userland)

Gruesse,

My system is in production, I can't test often.
Restart is long due to the expire process at start.

Anyway, I have tested once more, and this time all was cleanly stopped :-/
It seems my problem is not as much reproducible as I wish.

For the reload problem, I think it would not published as an update to Etch ?

it shouldn't mark all versions buggy from beginning.

Hm, does this make sense? Shouldn't libtool, proper dependencies and,
in an ideal world, versioned symbols be used for such checks?

I don't know about the lua bindings but zlib supports a vast range of
platforms only some of which support such things.

Or should the zlib authors be lart^w politely critized to not use a
forth level of numbering beyond REVISION?

I don't see why that would help at all? If you're going to do an exact
match on the version number then it's going to break eventually.

Is it safe to assume that the authors of lzlib.c are just over-careful,
and we can replace the hardcoded version with our current one (after
checking that the shlibs information for zlib didn't change, of course)?

Yes, zlib does offer a stable ABI so checking for the exact version
number is excessive. For what it's worth the checks inside zlib compare
only the first character of the string. Comparing for a lower version
would also work.

I get frequent crashes from the dictionary application when browsing the

Below is the trace back and further down the results as returned by the

expect you'll be able to reproduce this.

debiandoc2xml generates the following DocBook:

Here goes some text to be replaced, and more text to be replaced.
/para

The problem is, that further maintainance of the DocBook XML

thanks

I am unable to reproduce your bug.

 $ TEXMACS_PATH=/usr/lib/texmacs/TeXmacs/
 GUILE_LOAD_PATH=/usr/share/texmacs/TeXmacs/progs

Is there any specific reason as to why you are setting this variable?
What happens when you run texmacs without setting these variables?

Strange, but I myself now cannot reproduce the bug.
/usr/bin/texmacs now successfully runs without setting any env.

texmacs should run fine without setting any of these variables. I am
able to run texmacs without setting any of these variables (on sid)
and it runs without any crashes.

I am not sure what larm.vfn is

$ sudo apt-file update
$ sudo apt-file search larm.vfn

Did not give any results. So larm.vfn is not available in Debian. Did
you install some third party software?

No third party fonts related to this installed.

you.

Bug#429768: fixed in xmltv 0.5.45-5)

Unfortunately, the way the code works is that it uses the XML::LibXML
library to perform the initial validation of the file. This library
doesn't provide a nice interface to the list of errors, it just returns
the string containing the error messages output to the user. It would be
possible to parse this string to provide the summary output, but it
wouldn't be a particularly clean solution as it would be relying on the
format of these errors staying the same.

An ideal solution would be to improve the interface to XML::LibXML to
provide a better interface to these error messages. I haven't yet had
chance to look at this module and investigate how easy this would be to
provide.

I'm unsure whether to reopen this bug, or to leave it closed and file
a new 'wishlist' bug. Please advise.

I think this summary output would be useful. However I think, as you
suggested, it should be a new wishlist item against the package, and
possibly an associated wishlist item against libxml-libxml-perl about
the lack of decent error reporting.

Hi,

d-i and tasksel have an ability to choose a desktop from gnome-desktop,
kde-desktop, and xfce-desktop for additional task against desktop task.
This is reall nice feature, thanks.

On the other hand, we can't provide localized desktop tasks for
gnome-, kde-, xfce-. Only we can do is providing a task for common desktop.

It would be great if we can provide the tasks for each desktops, such as
language-desktop (common), language-gnome-desktop,
language-kde-desktop, and language-xfce-desktop.

For example, kde-i18n-ja is key component for Japanese KDE users.
But this is just disk-eater for GNOME users.

Bug#431172: python-osd should *NOT* depend on twisted.

2007-06-30 Thread Bug Filler
Package: python-osd
Severity: normal

twisted is only used in the osd daemon. The daemon is at most an extra
utility to the osd module, or it could just be an example to the module.

The daemon should either be packaged seperatedly as osd-daemon or
python-twisted should be a Suggested Package to python-osd.

I don't want to install 2MB of twisted for a module which only occupy only
around 100KB.

+
+ Copyright (C) 2007 Free Software Foundation, Inc. http://fsf.org/
+ Everyone is permitted to copy and distribute verbatim copies
+ of this license document, but changing it is not allowed.
+
+ Preamble
+
+ The GNU General Public License is a free, copyleft license for
+software and other kinds of works.
+
+ The licenses for most software and other practical works are designed
+to take away your freedom to share and change the works. By contrast,
+the GNU General Public License is intended to guarantee your freedom to
+share and change all versions of a program--to make sure it remains free
+software for all its users. We, the Free Software Foundation, use the
+GNU General Public License for most of our software; it applies also to
+any other work released this way by its authors. You can apply it to
+your programs, too.
+
+ When we speak of free software, we are referring to freedom, not
+price. Our General Public Licenses are designed to make sure that you
+have the freedom to distribute copies of free software (and charge for
+them if you wish), that you receive source code or can get it if you
+want it, that you can change the software or use pieces of it in new
+free programs, and that you know you can do these things.
+
+ To protect your rights, we need to prevent others from denying you
+these rights or asking you to surrender the rights. Therefore, you have
+certain responsibilities if you distribute copies of the software, or if
+you modify it: responsibilities to respect the freedom of others.
+
+ For example, if you distribute copies of such a program, whether
+gratis or for a fee, you must pass on to the recipients the same
+freedoms that you received. You must make sure that they, too, receive
+or can get the source code. And you must show them these terms so they
+know their rights.
+
+ Developers that use the GNU GPL protect your rights with two steps:
+(1) assert copyright on the software, and (2) offer you this License
+giving you legal permission to copy, distribute and/or modify it.
+
+ For the developers' and authors' protection, the GPL clearly explains
+that there is no warranty for this free software. For both users' and
+authors' sake, the GPL requires that modified versions be marked as
+changed, so that their problems will not be attributed erroneously to
+authors of previous versions.
+
+ Some devices are designed to deny users access to install or run
+modified versions of the software inside them, although the manufacturer
+can do so. This is fundamentally incompatible with the aim of
+protecting users' freedom to change the software. The systematic
+pattern of such abuse occurs in the area of products for individuals to
+use, which is precisely where it is most unacceptable. Therefore, we
+have designed this version of the GPL to prohibit the practice for those
+products. If such problems arise substantially in other domains, we
+stand ready to extend this provision to those domains in future versions
+of the GPL, as needed to protect the freedom of users.
+
+ Finally, every program is threatened constantly by software patents.

Bug#410598: Broken encoding for several .desktop files in /usr/share/mimelnk/

2007-06-30 Thread Daniel Leidert
retitle 410598 Broken encoding for several .desktop files in /usr/share/mimelnk/
thanks

Hi,

Although it seems, that /usr/share/mimelnk/application/smil.desktop has
been fixed, there are now several other files, that are broken:

/usr/share/mimelnk/application/msexcel.desktop contains invalid char
/usr/share/mimelnk/application/pgp-encrypted.desktop contains invalid char
/usr/share/mimelnk/application/pgp.desktop contains invalid char
/usr/share/mimelnk/application/pkcs7-mime.desktop contains invalid char
/usr/share/mimelnk/application/vnd.ms-powerpoint.desktop contains invalid char
/usr/share/mimelnk/application/vnd.oasis.opendocument.spreadsheet-template.desktop
 contains invalid char
/usr/share/mimelnk/application/x-troff-man.desktop contains invalid char
/usr/share/mimelnk/text/rdf.desktop contains invalid char

Could you please be so kind to forward this to upstream and fix it in
Debian. Unfortunately such broken files are excluded from some tests I
need to run for a package.

Regards, Daniel

Thanks, and sorry for not spotting the other bug report (I only

After reading your answer to Michal I see your point; and I can
understand that you are not keen on adding complex checks but maybe
it might help to avoid some confusion if you changed the error
message by adding or by some old .dpkg-old files or similar.

I have changed the wording of the NEWS.Debian file:

update-exim4.conf looks for commented UPEX4CmacrosUPEX4C (which
used to be the place marker in earlier 4.67-x versions) and barfs
if it finds them anywhere in /etc/exim4/exim4.conf.template or

includes files that would normally be excluded by update-exim4.conf.

Hmm, maybe we want it to only described on pages clearly intended
for developers (the task, not the status) only? No opinion on that

Indeed. I don't thing experimental qualifies as a real distribution,
and therefor should not be mentioned on

Bug#431180: iptables: Linked unnecessarily against libselinux

2007-06-30 Thread Martin Orr
Package: iptables
Version: 1.3.6.0debian1-5
Severity: minor
Tags: patch

iptables and all its extension modules are linked with -lselinux.
However this is unnecessary, even for the SECMARK and CONNSECMARK
extensions, because all they do is pass the context string specified by the
user through to the kernel. No functions from libselinux are called.

This unnecessary linkage is undesirable because a constructor in libselinux
tries to locate the /selinux filesystem, triggering access denied messages
when SELinux is enabled.

Hi Silas!

mentioning Windows 95 first makes it seem rather dated

 Can this paragraph be updated?

I've rewritte the paragraph, emphasizing Debian's stengths, rather than
bashing Microsoft (which imo makes us look bad).
The changes shoudl be online in a few hours.

Bug#431181: resolvconf: Please replace abuse of /dev/shm with /lib/init/rw and /var

2007-06-30 Thread Roger Leigh
Package: resolvconf
Version: 1.37
Severity: important

resolvconf is currently making directories and files under /dev/shm.
This namespace is reserved for POSIX shared memory (as specified in
SUSv3) by functions such as shm_open(3). resolvconf's use of this
namespace is not allowed, and could potentially cause breakage.

Now that /lib/init/rw exists, resolvconf has no need to use /dev/shm
inappropriately. Please could you switch to using /lib/init/rw and
then /var after it is available?

Thanks,
