So if you go that route, the exact criterium used by dpkg-buildpackage need to be published as an interface. I think that is just wrong. sbuild should not need to know anything about dpkg-buildpackage's internals and there is no need for change here. I hope you agree with the current license of this document and agree to put your text under the same one :-) If there is no objection, I will apply this soonish. Since my contribution is derived from the current version of the _New Maintainers' Guide_, which is GPLed, my contribution must be GPLed as well, if distributed (and it has been just distributed to the BTS!). To be more precise, the current version of the Guide is released under the terms of the GNU GPL v2 or later, hence a derivative work can be distributed under the terms: * of the GNU GPL v2 only * of the GNU GPL v2 or v3 * of the GNU GPL v2 or later * of the GNU GPL v3 only * of the GNU GPL v3 or later I personally *dislike* the GNU GPL v3, hence I would choose to license my contribution under the terms of the GNU GPL v2 only. But, on the other hand, my contribution is really small: I don't even know if it is creative enough to qualify for copyright protection. As a consequence, I don't think it makes much sense to insist that the license of the Guide is changed from GPL v2 or later to GPL v2 only, just for this small contribution. In conclusion, to the extent that my contribution is actually copyrighted, I hereby release it under the same terms of version 1.2.11 of the _New Maintainers' Guide_, that is to say, under the terms of the GNU General Public License as published by the Free Software Foundation; either version 2 of the License, or any later version. But I hope you will *not* switch to GPL v3 or later, and stick to GPL v2 or later instead. Hi! I've reassigned the bug we had against xen to initramfs-tools, as it is, as reported, the same bug, and being a bug with the image generation we can't do anything on our side about it. Also I re-raised the severity to critical because, as stated by the severity description, this bug makes unrelated software on the system (or the whole system) break. Namely it breaks xen, or whole systems with xen installed. Feel free to lower its severity if you think this is inappropriate, but please provide a reason, so I can know why I am mistaken! :) Thanks!! Bug#423289: Seconding the idea of removing hsffig.
Dear developpers, hsffig contain a binary program which has the same name as one from one of my packages (#427441). Bug#430933: collectd_4.0.3-1(hppa/experimental): FTBFS: tries to mix -fPIC and non -fPIC
On Fri, Jun 29, 2007 at 10:02:16PM +0200, Sebastian Harl wrote: On Thu, Jun 28, 2007 at 12:22:54PM +0200, Frank Lichtenheld wrote: your package failed to build from source, because you tried to link a static library compiled without -fPIC into a shared library compiled with -fPIC. That doesn't work. You will need a version of this static library compiled with -fPIC. Policy 10.2 requires static libraries not to be built with -fPIC. This does not seem to work on 64bit archs though (is hppa a 64bit architecture)? This problem has already been reported (see #358637). I'm not quite sure yet if that's a general problem on non 32bit architectures. In that case the policy should be changed in this respect. I need to do further investigations before. To temporarily work around this issue, I will disable the plugins causing that kind of problems on hppa (as I'm already doing on other 64bit architectures). You can build static libraries without -fPIC just fine, you just can link it together with another object that is compiled with -fPIC. The correct solution for this is to have a version of the static library compiled with -fPIC in addition to the one compiled without. We had this in the past for e.g. xlibs, don't know what a current example would be. i386 doesn't seem to care about the PIC/non-PIC thing, I'm not toolchain expert enough to tell why. hppa on the other hand is very picky about it (it is a 32bit architecture, BTW, at least in userland) Gruesse, -- Frank Lichtenheld [EMAIL PROTECTED] www: http://www.djpig.de/ -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#417562: stopping cyrus does not stop all subprocess
My system is in production, I can't test often. Restart is long due to the expire process at start. Anyway, I have tested once more, and this time all was cleanly stopped :-/ It seems my problem is not as much reproducible as I wish. Bug#431161: binNMUs in bug reports confuse version tracking

Shouldn't libtool, proper dependencies and, in an ideal world, versioned symbols be used for such checks? I don't know about the lua bindings but zlib supports a vast range of platforms only some of which support such things. Or should the zlib authors be lart^w politely critized to not use a forth level of numbering beyond REVISION? I don't see why that would help at all? If you're going to do an exact match on the version number then it's going to break eventually. Is it safe to assume that the authors of lzlib.c are just over-careful, and we can replace the hardcoded version with our current one (after checking that the shlibs information for zlib didn't change, of course)? Yes, zlib does offer a stable ABI so checking for the exact version number is excessive. For what it's worth the checks inside zlib compare only the first character of the string. Comparing for a lower version would also work. -- You grabbed my hand and we fell into it, like a daydream - or a fever. signature.asc Description: Digital signature

Also the old error message's count would have been more useful, if it worked. A feature was amputated to fix this bug. Unfortunately, the way the code works is that it uses the XML::LibXML library to perform the initial validation of the file. This library doesn't provide a nice interface to the list of errors, it just returns the string containing the error messages output to the user. It would be possible to parse this string to provide the summary output, but it wouldn't be a particularly clean solution as it would be relying on the format of these errors staying the same. An ideal solution would be to improve the interface to XML::LibXML to provide a better interface to these error messages. I haven't yet had chance to look at this module and investigate how easy this would be to provide. at /usr/share/perl5/XMLTV/ValidateFile.pm line 146 Summary of errors.total 59298 = Couldn't find end of Start Tag episode-num 19231 Couldn't find end of Start Tag length 535 attributes construct error 19766 error parsing attribute name19766 The file did not validate as well-formed XML, so no further processing was performed. ...this would put no further in a clear context. I'm unsure whether to reopen this bug, or to leave it closed and file a new 'wishlist' bug. Please advise. I think this summary output would be useful. However I think, as you suggested, it should be a new wishlist item against the package, and possibly an associated wishlist item against libxml-libxml-perl about the lack of decent error reporting. -- Chris Butler [EMAIL PROTECTED] GnuPG Key ID: 1024D/D097A261 signature.asc Description: Digital signature

By contrast, +the GNU General Public License is intended to guarantee your freedom to +share and change all versions of a program--to make sure it remains free +software for all its users. We, the Free Software Foundation, use the +GNU General Public License for most of our software; it applies also to +any other work released this way by its authors. You can apply it to +your programs, too. + + When we speak of free software, we are referring to freedom, not +price. Our General Public Licenses are designed to make sure that you +have the freedom to distribute copies of free software (and charge for +them if you wish), that you receive source code or can get it if you +want it, that you can change the software or use pieces of it in new +free programs, and that you know you can do these things. + + To protect your rights, we need to prevent others from denying you +these rights or asking you to surrender the rights. Therefore, you have +certain responsibilities if you distribute copies of the software, or if +you modify it: responsibilities to respect the freedom of others. + + For example, if you distribute copies of such a program, whether +gratis or for a fee, you must pass on to the recipients the same +freedoms that you received. You must make sure that they, too, receive +or can get the source code. And you must show them these terms so they +know their rights. + + Developers that use the GNU GPL protect your rights with two steps: +(1) assert copyright on the software, and (2) offer you this License +giving you legal permission to copy, distribute and/or modify it. + + For the developers' and authors' protection, the GPL clearly explains +that there is no warranty for this free software. For both users' and +authors' sake, the GPL requires that modified versions be marked as +changed, so that their problems will not be attributed erroneously to +authors of previous versions. + + Some devices are designed to deny users access to install or run +modified versions of the software inside them, although the manufacturer +can do so. This is fundamentally incompatible with the aim of +protecting users' freedom to change the software. The systematic +pattern of such abuse occurs in the area of products for individuals to +use, which is precisely where it is most unacceptable. Therefore, we +have designed this version of the GPL to prohibit the practice for those +products. Bug#431180: iptables: Linked unnecessarily against libselinux
Package: iptables Version: 1.3.6.0debian1-5 Severity: minor Tags: patch iptables and all its extension modules are linked with -lselinux. However this is unnecessary, even for the SECMARK and CONNSECMARK extensions, because all they do is pass the context string specified by the user through to the kernel.
