Bug#448691: Requires a particular inetd implementation
Package: vmware-package Version: 0.19 Severity: minor It seems that vmware-package creates a vmware-server package that depends on OpenBSD's inetd (openbsd-inetd) rather than any old inetd (inet-superserver). Is this strictly true? If not, it makes sense to depend on the latter so as to appease fans of other inetds. -- System Information: Debian Release: lenny/sid APT prefers unstable APT policy: (990, 'unstable') Architecture: amd64 (x86_64) Kernel: Linux 2.6.22-2-amd64 (SMP w/1 CPU core) Locale: LANG=en_AU.utf8, LC_CTYPE=en_AU.utf8 (charmap=UTF-8) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/dash Versions of packages vmware-package depends on: ii bzip2 1.0.3-7high-quality block-sorting file co ii debhelper 5.0.59 helper programs for debian/rules ii dpkg-dev 1.14.7 package building tools for Debian ii fakeroot 1.8.2 Gives a fake root environment ii file 4.21-3 Determines file type using magic ii make 3.81-3 The GNU version of the make util ii module-assistant 0.10.11tool to make module package creati ii python2.4.4-6An interactive high-level object-o Versions of packages vmware-package recommends: ii ia32-libs 2.2 ia32 shared libraries for use on a ii ia32-libs-gtk 2.1 gtk+ ia32 shared libraries ii libart-2.0-22.3.19-3 Library of functions for 2D graphi ii libatk1.0-0 1.20.0-1 The ATK accessibility toolkit ii libbz2-1.0 1.0.3-7 high-quality block-sorting file co ii libcairo2 1.4.10-1+b2 The Cairo 2D vector graphics libra ii libcairomm-1.0-11.4.2-1 C++ wrappers for Cairo (shared lib ii libcroco3 0.6.1-1 a generic Cascading Style Sheet (C ii libexpat1 1.95.8-4 XML parsing C library - runtime li ii libfontconfig1 2.4.91-1 generic font configuration library ii libfreetype62.3.5-1+b1 FreeType 2 font engine, shared lib ii libglade2-0 1:2.6.2-1library to load .glade files at ru ii libglib2.0-02.14.2-1 The GLib library of C routines ii libglibmm-2.4-1c2a 2.14.2-1 C++ wrapper for the GLib toolkit ( ii libgnomecanvas2-0 2.20.1.1-1 A powerful object-oriented display ii libgnomecanvasmm-2.6-1c 2.14.0-1 C++ wrappers for libgnomecanvas2 ( ii libgsf-1-1141.14.7-1 Structured File Library - runtime ii libgtk2.0-0 2.12.1-1 The GTK+ graphical user interface ii libgtkmm-2.4-1c2a 1:2.12.1-1 C++ wrappers for GTK+ 2.4 (shared ii libpango1.0-0 1.18.3-1 Layout and rendering of internatio ii libpng12-0 1.2.15~beta5-3 PNG library - runtime ii librsvg2-2 2.18.2-1 SAX-based renderer library for SVG ii libsexy20.1.11-2 collection of additional GTK+ widg ii libsexymm2 0.1.9-2 collection of additional gtkmm wid ii libsigc++-2.0-0c2a 2.0.17-2 type-safe Signal Framework for C++ pn libssl0.9.7 none (no description available) ii libview20.6.0-2 VMware's Incredibly Exciting Widge ii libx11-62:1.0.3-7X11 client-side library ii libxau6 1:1.0.3-2X11 authorisation library ii libxcursor1 1:1.1.9-1X cursor management library ii libxdmcp6 1:1.0.2-2X11 Display Manager Control Protoc ii libxext61:1.0.3-2X11 miscellaneous extension librar ii libxfixes3 1:4.0.3-2X11 miscellaneous 'fixes' extensio ii libxft2 2.1.12-2 FreeType-based font drawing librar ii libxi6 2:1.1.3-1X11 Input extension library ii libxinerama11:1.0.2-1X11 Xinerama extension library ii libxml2 2.6.30.dfsg-2GNOME XML library ii libxrandr2 2:1.2.2-1X11 RandR extension library ii libxrender1 1:0.9.4-1X Rendering Extension client libra ii libxtst62:1.0.3-1X11 Testing -- Resource extension ii zlib1g 1:1.2.3.3.dfsg-6 compression library - runtime -- no debconf information -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Quoting Steve Langasek ([EMAIL PROTECTED]): Unfortunately, the messages sent to the openldap maintainer list address seem to have been held in a moderation queue for some time before being delivered. I don't know if the other comaintainers are subscribed directly via the PTS, but I have only just received information on the proposed changes now that someone has moderated the list posts and have not had an opportunity to look through them for comments. I would suggest that you notify translators of this, and give the OpenLDAP maintainers more time to comment on the proposed changes - preferably until after the upcoming weekend. Steve, do you need more time to comment about the proposed changes? I'm OK to make the delay longer if you need it. signature.asc Description: Digital signature

Bug#443334: policy: postinst abort-remove state.
On Tue, 30 Oct 2007, Ian Jackson wrote: Ian Jackson writes (policy: postinst abort-remove state.): prerm remove can be called only from unpacked, config-failed and installed. So Kurt is correct to say that policy is wrong to say it remains installed since the package might not be installed. However, the purpose of running the postinst is to (try to) put the package into installed. That's what the postinst always does. Idly thinking about this a day or two ago, it came to me that obviously we are all approaching this from the wrong angle. The point of running the postinst is to `put the package back into installed' as an error-unwinding task, to try to undo what was done earlier, on the presumption that the package was previously installed. The problem occurs when this presumption is not true. We have missed a possible response to this situation: not run the postinst at all. I think this would be much better. After all the surprise is that the package became installed. Redefining the postinst's semantics so that the package doesn't count as installed in this case is the wrong answer - the right answer is not to attempt to fix up the package in this case. If it was broken beforehand then there's no reason why an aborted removal should try to restore it to fully working state. Indeed! I have to say that I wasn't convinced by your refutal of the change done for #432893 because the diagnosis of the problem was clear... ending up with an installed package when you tried to remove it and it wasn't cleanly installed before was definitely wrong. So reverting the change without proposing an alternative fix doesn't seemed the right thing to do. Now the situation is a bit clearer IMO. Will you implement that change ? Bug#448700: pdflatex format is not enabled
Package: luatex Version: 0.11.2-1 Severity: normal Running luatex on LaTeX files out of the box using the debian package is not possible, since the matching format dumps are not available. The symptoms of this is that running luatex foo.tex (where foo.tex is a LaTeX file) will give you an unexpected command sequence error, same error you will get running plainTeX on foo.tex. Trying running luatex -fmt latex fails due to the missing format file. On a per user basis this can be fixed running luatex -ini latex.ini and luatex -ini pdflatex.ini and then copying the just generated *.fmt files under ~/.texmf-var/web2c/luatex/. Ghostscript output wasn't helpful at all. Ugh, that looks like the ghostscript package broke the transition. I'll clone this bug to ghostscript, it should not provide gs or gs-gpl when not offering that package's features. I'll upload a new gv package soon. Though I'm still undecided how to work around ghostscript's brokeness. Ideally would be something like Depends: ghostscript-x | gs-gpl | gs I think problem with ghostscript providing gs-gpl can be circumvented by making that dependency versioned, but how to still allow other ghostscripts, the old gs was also a virtual package? (I guess the only solution will be listing all gs-* packages (with some version), it's not the nicest solution, but should work.) Hochachtungsvoll, Bernhard R. Bug#448616: firebird2.0-classic: dependency on xinetd is completely unreasonable
tags 448616 confirmed thanks -=| Hamish Moffatt, Wed, Oct 31, 2007 at 08:06:20AM +1100 |=- Please, could we discuss the issue before you close it? Sure. I closed it to not forget it later (in the case that you agree there is no bug). -=| Hamish Moffatt, Tue, Oct 30, 2007 at 11:54:47PM +1100 |=- firebird2.0-classic's dependency on xinetd forces this to be the superserver of choice on the server. No, you can disable all xinetd-provided services and use inetd implementation of your choice. No you can't, because xinetd diverts openbsd-inetd's binary. This seems like xinetd's flaw, but I see your point. Further, I think firebird has a duty to work with the standard inetd at least, and xinetd optionally. You're right. I must have overlooked this or simply kept my impressions from the 1.5 era. There is: fb_inet_server needs that FIREBIRD environment variable is set to /usr/lib/firebird/2.0. If you know how to achieve this with other inetd implementations, please reopen the bug and I'll add support for them. How about a wrapper script? That will work for any inetd. Can you show me how any environment is being created by /etc/xinetd.d/firebird20 anyway? I don't see any mention of environment variable. My bad. I have the env += FIREBIRD=/usr/lib/firebird/2.0 setting locally and was fooled that this is what the package installs too. It seems that the build sets the firebird root dir just fine and there is no need of environment mangling. (and even if there was, a wrapper script would help it, as you pointed out) My last straw for using xinetd is that it is easier to maintain two server installs via debconf (enabling 2.0, disabling 2.1 etc). As this is rather uncommon, I think I'll remove this functionality (simplifying postinsts, avoiding a debconf question) and make all firebird server packages conflict with each other. Having two servers installed at the same time is dangerous anyway, and if one wants to migrate databases, she can backup with the old server, install the new (removing the old) and restore. Not much of a hassle. Does all this sound as a good plan to you? Thanks for bringing this up (and for insisting there is a problem). BTW dropping xinetd from the dependency would even allow for firebird to move from extra to optional priority :) -- damJabberID: [EMAIL PROTECTED] signature.asc Description: Digital signature

No you can't, because xinetd diverts openbsd-inetd's binary. This seems like xinetd's flaw, but I see your point. I agree, xinetd's behaviour is not right. You even lose existing inetd services by default, because xinetd disables openbsd-inetd and doesn't offer its services in the default configuration. I reported #448617 about that. xinetd does not seem to be in good shape and it appears there is a WNPP RFA (request-for-adoption) filed for it. My last straw for using xinetd is that it is easier to maintain two server installs via debconf (enabling 2.0, disabling 2.1 etc). Coincidentally, I installed the official Firebird 2.0 package on Windows last night on a machine that already had 1.5 installed, and it told me that I would need to remove 1.5 first or that 2.0 would be installed but not configured. I think this is consistent with your proposal for the Debian packages. I was a bit confused that despite selecting which firebird server I wanted enabled in the postinst, the /etc/xinetd.d/firebird20 file still had the service disabled - I guess your proposal will address that also? Bug#448140: Problems between Razor and SpamAssassin
Hi Sven, On 2007-10-31 at 10:28:26, Sven Hartge wrote: I don't think that changing the logcheck rules is a proper fix. If making razor log via syslog changes the way spamd represents itself, there must be somethin fishy going on which should be investigated and not papered over. You're right, it would be good to get to the bottom of this. I would guess that it has to do with how SpamAssassin is calling razor. Francois Marier wrote: I am a bit surprised to hear about problems with logging to syslog. Corrin and I never had any problems with it, so we're quite curious to know what kinds of problems you ran into. My memory is a bit fuzzy in this regard, but I remember some fallout comming from the log-problem, notably in analysing tools like munin. That would make sense. Bug#448710: acpi-support: On notebooks the ACPI system causes the drive to retract every minute and thus decreases disk life by a high amount.
Package: acpi-support Version: 0.103-1 Severity: critical Justification: causes serious data loss (See also https://launchpad.net/bug59695.html for corresponding Ubuntu bug!) On a notebook with ACPI enabled, in battery mode the disk is retracted after 1 minute of idling. This leads to ~7000 retracts in only 100 hrs total runtime - and a notebook disk can handle only up to 600.000 retracts; this decreases the total life of a dsik to ~138 days, which is not even a half year. As a workaround, add the following to /etc/hdparm.conf: /dev/sda { apm = 255 } and the following must be put into a file called 99-fix-disk.sh: #!/bin/sh hdparm -B 255 /dev/sda This file has to be copied to: /etc/acpi/suspend.d/ /etc/acpi/resume.d/ /etc/acpi/start.d/ which shuts off the idling behaviour and saves a huge lot of disk life. -- System Information: Debian Release: lenny/sid APT prefers testing APT policy: (500, 'testing') Architecture: i386 (i686) Kernel: Linux 2.6.9-023stab043.3-smp (SMP w/4 CPU cores) Locale: LANG=C, LC_CTYPE=C (charmap=ANSI_X3.4-1968) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/bash Versions of packages acpi-support depends on: ii acpid 1.0.4-7.1 Utilities for using ACPI power man ii dmidecode 2.9-1 Dump Desktop Management Interface ii finger0.17-11user information lookup program ii hdparm7.7-1 tune hard disk parameters for high ii laptop-detect 0.12.1-0.1 attempt to detect a laptop ii libc6 2.6.1-1+b1 GNU C Library: Shared libraries ii lsb-base 3.1-24 Linux Standard Base 3.1 init scrip ii nvclock 0.8b2-1Allows you to overclock your nVidi ii powermgmt-base1.29 Common utils and configs for power ii radeontool1.5-5 utility to control ATI Radeon back ii toshset 1.72-6 Access much of the Toshiba laptop ii vbetool 0.7-1.1run real-mode video BIOS code to a ii x11-xserver-utils 7.3+1 X server utilities acpi-support recommends no packages. -- no debconf information -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#442858: libc6-prof: programs linked agains libc_p.a crash with a SEGV
Hi! I came across the same bug in Ubuntu gutsy. The problem is that the instrumentation function __mcount_internal uses the thread control block (the cmpl $0x0,%gs:0xc), but %gs is not initialized at this point, yet (mcount is called at the very start of __libc_start_main). As a crude work-around I replaced the cmpl $0x0,%gs:0xc and the following je with NOPs in libc_p.a which makes things work for me. best regards -Edwin -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#448710: acpi-support: On notebooks the ACPI system causes the drive to retract every minute and thus decreases disk life by a high amount.
Marco Schuster wrote: Package: acpi-support Version: 0.103-1 Severity: critical Justification: causes serious data loss (See also https://launchpad.net/bug59695.html for corresponding Ubuntu bug!) On a notebook with ACPI enabled, in battery mode the disk is retracted after 1 minute of idling. This leads to ~7000 retracts in only 100 hrs total runtime - and a notebook disk can handle only up to 600.000 retracts; this decreases the total life of a dsik to ~138 days, which is not even a half year. Bug#448397: openssh - dropbear incompatability, nonzero exit status returned from successful commands
I've had a few reports of this but can't reproduce it, which is awkward for debugging. Is there anything of note about the OS or hardware that might help? Thanks LiveFree for letting me see the light after 20 years of smoking at least a pack a day. I always wanted to quit - always pretended that I didn't smoke. In fact I never allowed myself to be photographed with a cigarette and never smoked in front of anyone in my family. Both my parents died from cancer, my father from lung cancer. I am now 39 days smoke free and training to run a marathon in spring. Thanks LiveFree you for helping me gain my life back. Josiah Show your close ones you care, quit smoking today

Bug#437360: hotkey-setup: patch to fix upgrade path, try 2
Hi again Mohammed, Sorry for the noise, but my previous patch did _not_ correct the upgrade path from existing versions of the package. In addition to the previous patch, I think the only way we can ensure a smooth upgrade path is to include a custom prerm maintainer script. The script removes the saved keycodes state file which holds the dumpkeycodes output. The script will be executed by dpkg when, and only when, the prerm of a hotkeys-setup version less than this version fails. A log of the upgrade path follows, the new patch is attached. $ sudo dpkg -i hotkey-setup_0.1-17.2_i386.deb (Reading database ... 92393 files and directories currently installed.) Bug#153920: believe your self
I am 54 years old and been a smoker for the last 30 years. I have stopped several times in the past, anything from 1 day to 2 years using many methods including will power and nicotine replacement therapy. I recently was blessed with my first grandson and decided to try once more so that I may enjoy as much of his upbringing as possible. I decided to try the Live Free. So far I have been 10 weeks without the weed and only once have I momenterily felt the need to smoke which I overcame easily. Truly amazing gift that Live Free has gave to the world. Santiago Time to live.

Bug#446368: wine broke xfce menu translation
Hi again, I've just tried to manually copy /etc/xdg/xfce4/desktop/menu.xml.fr to ~/.config/xfce4/desktop/menu.xml and my french xfce menu came back so it remains to find why the installation of wine choose /etc/xdg/xfce4/desktop/menu.xml instead of /etc/xdg/xfce4/desktop/menu.xml.fr in my case (I suppose other locales have the same problem and I didn't try other desktop manager). Please let me know where is the problem: I am very interested (I didn't find where the menu were managed in the wine package). Regards. Philippe. _ Ne gardez plus qu'une seule adresse mail ! Bug#285406: Bug#448140: Problems between Razor and SpamAssassin
Francois Marier writes: Hi Sven, On 2007-10-31 at 10:28:26, Sven Hartge wrote: I don't think that changing the logcheck rules is a proper fix. If making razor log via syslog changes the way spamd represents itself, there must be somethin fishy going on which should be investigated and not papered over. You're right, it would be good to get to the bottom of this. I would guess that it has to do with how SpamAssassin is calling razor. my guess is that Razor uses Sys::Syslog, the same module as SpamAssassin uses, and calls openlog() with a new ident string: openlog $ident, $logopt, $facility Opens the syslog. $ident is prepended to every message. $logopt con- tains zero or more of the words pid, ndelay, nowait. The cons option is ignored, since the failover mechanism will drop down to the console automatically if all other media fail. $facility specifies the part of the system to report about, for example LOG_USER or LOG_LOCAL0: see your syslog(3) documentation for the facilities available in your sys- tem. This function will croak if it can't connect to the syslog dae- mon. this then replaces the SpamAssassin call to openlog(). it might be useful to open this bug upstream on the SA bugzilla, we may be able to hack around it somehow. --j. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Changing make_mysql_tables didn't make any difference for me. Not so strange, considering that the packages uses the dbconfig framework. Unless I misunderstood how dbconfig works, of course. :-) The change was similar though - I had to remove the first USE $ {db_name}; line in the file: /usr/share/dbconfig-common/data/bacula-director-mysql/install/mysql and then re-run the configuration (dpkg-reconfigure bacula-director- mysql). I assume it's just a copy-paste error on the package maintainers side. Package: zsh Version: 4.3.4-25 Severity: normal vin:~ printf %g %g\n -0 -0. 0 -0 whereas with the printf from the coreutils on etch: courge:~ /usr/bin/printf %g %g\n -0 -0. -0 -0 (this will not work on sid due to the bug 448723, but this is a different bug since the zsh behavior is the same on any OS).
